Urban pluvial flash floods have become a matter of widespread concern, as they severely impact people’s lives in urban areas. Hydrological and hydraulic models have been widely used for urban flood management and urban planning. Traditionally, to reduce the complexity of urban flood modelling and simulations, simplification or generalization methods have been used; for example, some models focus on the simulation of overland water flow, and some models focus on the simulation of the water flow in sewer systems. However, the water flow of urban floods includes both overland flow and sewer system flow. The overland flow processes are impacted by many different geographical features in what is an extremely spatially heterogeneous environment. Therefore, this article is based on two widely used models (SWMM and ANUGA) that are coupled to develop a bi-directional method of simulating water flow processes in urban areas. The open source overland flow model uses the unstructured triangular as the spatial discretization scheme. The unstructured triangular-based hydraulic model can be better used to capture the spatial heterogeneity of the urban surfaces. So, the unstructured triangular-based model is an essential condition for heterogeneous feature-based urban flood simulation. The experiments indicate that the proposed coupled model in this article can accurately depict surface waterlogged areas and that the heterogeneous feature-based urban flood model can be used to determine different types of urban flow processes.

Both the river network and the regions outside the estuary mouths in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of China experienced significant changes from 1999 to 2014. A validated hydrodynamic model across the entire PRD and adjacent regions outside the estuary mouths is employed to simulate both present (circa 2014) and past conditions (circa 1999). The total net water flux of the PRD decreased. The flow division of the West River is increasing, with values of 3.63% and 4.66% for the Makou and Denglongshan sections, respectively. The flood flow division of the North River is correspondingly decreasing. The value of the flood levels significantly decreased (more than 2 m) in the upper portion of the PRD, moderately decreased in the middle of the PRD (more than 1.1 m) and slightly decreased in the bottom part of the PRD (less than 0.22 m). In addition, the effects of morphodynamic evolution in different regions (i.e., the river network, coastline and bathymetry changes outside the estuary mouth) on floods are quantified. The results indicate that the decreased net water flux was caused by the increased channel’s capacity and the gentler water-level profile from the downcutting riverbed of the river network. The uneven morphodynamic evolution of the riverbed of the river network was primarily responsible for changes in the flood flow division in the PRD, and morphological evolution outside the estuary mouth was primarily responsible for reallocation within the outlets. The downcutting riverbed in the river network was primarily responsible for the lower flood levels in the upper and middle portion of the PRD. Reclamation seemed to have barely affected the flood level. The deepening bathymetry outside the estuary mouth was mainly responsible for the decrease in the flood level in the bottom portion of the PRD. The downcutting riverbed may decrease the stability of the riverbank, increasing the flood risk. The morphodynamic evolution of both the river network and the regions outside the estuary mouth should be considered to avoid unwanted side effects when designing local projects and flood mitigation strategies for the PRD.

An integrated system including eutrophication simulation and algal bloom predication was established and applied in Lake Taihu. The mechanic models, which are based on a three-dimensional numerical model coupling hydrodynamic module, pollutant transport module, suspended sediment resuspension module, wind wave module and algal bloom predication module, can simulate not only the single function such as current pattern, nutrient distribution, sediment concentration and wave height field, but also the interaction among them. Using these models, some complex phenomenon such as endogenous pollution can be simulated. In the study, some key technologies are introduced to make the simulation reasonable and feasible. First, a new method for predicting algal bloom is introduced. Differing from the traditional phytoplankton dynamic model, judging the algal bloom through biomass or chlorophyll concentration, the method quantitatively estimates algal growth state switching among bloom, collapse and steady based on algal stability criterion in water column. Second, the sediment resuspension is estimated using calibrated critical shear stresses derived from remote sensing data and the wave-enhanced bottom stress during the windy days. Third, a user-friendly operation environment based on plug-in development and geographic information system is developed. The tests demonstrated that the system could both simulate the reactive solutes such as BOD and DO and the suspended sediment correctly under interaction of gravity and turbulent diffusion. The simulation results demonstrated that the system could obtain reasonable and reliable simulated results in Lake Taihu.

Organized spatial distribution of plants (plant zonation) in salt marshes has been linked to the soil aeration condition in the rhizosphere through simplistic tidal inundation parameters. Here, a soil saturation index (ratio of saturation period to tidal period at a soil depth) is introduced to describe the soil aeration condition. This new index captures the effects of not only the tidal inundation period and frequency but also the flow dynamics of groundwater in the marsh soil. One-dimensional numerical models based on saturated flow with the Boussinesq approximations and a two-dimensional variably saturated flow model were developed to explore the behaviour of this new soil aeration variable under the influence of spring-neap tides. Simulations revealed two characteristic zones of soil aeration across the salt marsh: a relatively well aerated near-creek zone and a poorly aerated interior zone. In the near-creek zone, soils undergo periodic wetting and drying as the groundwater table fluctuates throughout the spring-neap cycle. In the interior, the soil remains largely water saturated except for neap tide periods when limited drainage occurs. Although such a change of soil aeration condition has been observed in previous numerical simulations, the soil saturation index provides a clear delineation of the zones that are separated by an 'inflexion point' on the averaged index curve. The results show how the saturation index represents the effects of soil properties, tidal parameters and marsh platform elevation on marsh soil aeration. Simulations of these combined effects have not been possible with traditional tidal inundation parameters. Based on integrated vertically averaged free-surface and subsurface model, detailed analysis was focused on the water fluctuation in the enclosed lagoon caused by tidal movement. It is shown that when porosity of sand is increased, the water storage capacity in sand beach will be increased and the amplitude of vibration in the lagoon will be decreased. On the contrary, when permeability coefficient is increased, the amplitude in lagoon will be increased, and the phenomena of phase lag will be reduced either. Research reveals there is periodical water exchange between lagoon and out sea on the two sides of the sand beach. The procedure of water going into the lagoon happens differently from that of water coming out from lagoon. Because there is over-height in the lagoon, the time of water transporting from the lagoon to the out sea is longer than the reverse procedure and the maximum of water flux in the first procedure is shorter than the later. Further more the water moving from lagoon to open sea usually happens in the initial stage of flood and later stage of ebb, while the reverse procedure happens in the later stage of flood and initial stage of ebb.
