Understanding the feedback loop that links the spatiotemporal spread of infectious diseases and human behavior is an open problem. To study this problem, we develop a multiplex framework that couples epidemic spreading across subpopulations in a metapopulation network (i.e., physical layer) with the spreading of awareness about the epidemic in a communication network (i.e., virtual layer). We explicitly study the interactions between the mobility patterns across subpopulations and the awareness propagation among individuals. We analyze the coupled dynamics using microscopic Markov chains (MMCs) equations and validate the theoretical results via Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We find that with the spreading of awareness, reducing human mobility becomes more effective in mitigating the large-scale epidemic. We also investigate the influence of varying topological features of the physical and virtual layers and the correlation between the connectivity and local population size per subpopulation. Overall the proposed modeling framework and findings contribute to the growing literature investigating the interplay between the spatiotemporal spread of epidemics and human behavior.

Patterns arising from the reaction-diffusion epidemic model provide insightful aspects into the transmission of infectious diseases. For a classic SIR reaction-diffusion epidemic model, we review its Turing pattern formations with different transmission rates. A quantitative indicator, "normal serious prevalent area (NSPA)", is introduced to characterize the relationship between patterns and the extent of the epidemic. The extent of epidemic is positively correlated to NSPA. To effectively reduce NSPA of patterns under the large transmission rates, taken removed (recovery or isolation) rate as a control parameter, we consider the mathematical formulation and numerical solution of an optimal control problem for the SIR reaction-diffusion model. • We proposed an epidemic model coupling the vaccination decision and disease spreading process. • The link overlapping fraction on the two-layered network determines the evolution of disease propagation. • Both conformity updating method and myopic best response updating method are taken into account. • The infected fraction has no stable equilibria under the best response update. Epidemic spreading has been widely investigated over the past decades. And voluntary vaccination has been often utilized to explore dynamical process in epidemics where vaccines are available. In this letter, we establish a framework considering conformity motivated update as well as myopic best response motivated update on a family network which is demonstrated by a two-layered network. Extensive numerical simulations are conducted to study the dynamics of epidemic spreading under the aforementioned update rules, from which we discover the oscillation phenomenon under the pure myopic best response condition and the amplitude diversification phenomenon under the mixing of conformity and myopic best response motivated conditions. Moreover, we find that smaller overlapping fraction of links on two-layered network shall promote the epidemic propagation.
