Delamination is one of the life‐limiting failure modes for fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite composites resulting in poor damage tolerance, as this failure mode occurs at considerably lower loads. Owing to the enormous demand and mass production of FRP composites, a large amount of fiber waste is produced worldwide. This triggers concern about utilizing these fiber wastes for some valuable applications. The present study aims to improve the overall damage tolerance of laminated glass/epoxy composites via the introduction of waste short carbon fibers (SCFs) reinforcement in the epoxy matrix. The effect of various SCF contents (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt%) in glass fiber/epoxy composites were evaluated experimentally for their interlaminar fracture toughness in terms of both crack development and propagation under mode I and II interlaminar fracture toughness tests, at elevated temperatures (30, 50, and 70°C). Based on the experimental results, glass/epoxy composite with 0.1 wt% of SCF revealed 13.49% and 20.45% increment in mode I and II interlaminar fracture toughness, respectively, at ambient temperature. A positive reinforcement effect could be noticed for GIC and GIIC values up to 50°C. However, due to residual interfacial stresses, interfacial debonding, and epoxy softening, a negative reinforcement effect could be noticed at 70°C. Delamination initiation and crack propagation mechanisms have been explored at elevated temperatures. The acoustic emission monitoring with artificial neural networks predicts the ultimate strength of glass/epoxy composite laminates using Acoustic Emission Data. The ultimate loads of all the specimens were used to characterise the emission of hits during failure modes. The six layered glass fiber laminates were prepared (in woven mat form) with epoxy as the binding medium by hand lay-up technique. At room temperature, with a pressure of 30 kg/cm2, the laminates were cured. The laminates of standard dimensions as per ASTM D3039 for the tensile test were cut from the lamina. The Acoustic Emission (AE) test was conducted on these specimens under the load of uni-axial tension in the 10 Ton capacity Universal Testing Machine (UTM). In the monitoring process, acoustic emission parameters such as hits, counts, energy, duration, Root Mean Square (RMS) Value and amplitude were recorded. The RMS Values corresponding to the amplitude ranges from tensile test were used to characterise the failure load of all the similar glass-epoxy composite specimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study involves frequency-driven exploration of bi-directional, industry-driven, laminated composite glass/epoxy beams by experimental and finite element analysis. The experimental vibration responses were ensured through a vibration first Fourier transform (FFT) analyzer. The finite element predictions were made using MATLAB platform by developing a programmable computer code accounting for shear deformation. The results conclude that the free-vibration finite element predictions for glass/epoxy beams are sensitive to effects of different boundary conditions and span-to-thickness ratios. The present study will assist in our understanding of modal behaviour towards design and service of laminated beams in the frequency domain and can serve as experimental benchmark results. This study focuses on developing and implementing Mamdani hybrid fuzzy logic inference system (FIS) for transverse crack detection and fault diagnosis in a woven fiber laminated glass/epoxy composite beam using different vibration modes of natural frequencies. The shifting of vibration is attributed to the implication of cracks. These vibration signatures are fuzzified through hybrid fuzzy sets (triangular, trapezoidal, Gaussian) and scaled to crack location and depth using the fuzzy rules and defuzzification process. The vibration signatures are recorded using ABAQUS finite element (FE) simulation software for a fixed beam and are fed as input parameters to the developed FIS for computing the desired outputs. The realization for crack depth and position is experimentally verified through a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analyzer. The experimental results with simulated data show that fuzzy logic application detects crack positions and depth accurately at different levels. It is concluded that the hybrid FIS bears a close resemblance to the experimental analysis and also stands out as an effective method for crack detection in LCB over other standalone methods. The current method can be used as a cost-effective non-destructive technique for health monitoring and fault diagnosis of composite beam structures in any practical field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An experimental study is performed to investigate the electro-mechanical response of three-dimensionally conductive multi-functional glass fiber/epoxy laminated composites under quasi-static tensile loading. To generate a threedimensional conductive network within the composites, multi-wall carbon nanotubes are embedded within the epoxy matrix and carbon fibers are reinforced between the glass fiber laminates using an electro-flocking technique. A combination of shear mixing and ultrasonication is employed to disperse carbon nanotubes inside the epoxy matrix. A vacuum infusion process is used to fabricate the laminated composites of two different carbon fiber lengths (150 mm and 350 mm) and four different carbon fiber densities (500, 1000, 1500, 2000 fibers/mm2). A four circumferential probe technique is employed to measure the in-situ electrical resistance of composites under tensile load. Although composites of both carbon fiber lengths showed significant decrease of sheet resistance under no mechanical load conditions, composites of 350 mm long carbon fibers showed the lowest resistivity of 10 X/sq. Unlike the resistance values, composites of 350 mm carbon fibers showed a significant decrease in Young's modulus compared to 150 mm counterparts. For the electro-mechanical response, composites containing carbon fibers of 150 mm long demonstrated a maximum value of percentage change in resistance. Two types of laminate composites made of glass fibre/epoxy matrix (EPO_FV) and glass fibre/epoxy modified tri-block copolymer (Nanostrength) matrix (EPONS_FV) were manufactured by compression moulding. Some AFM investigations have been done to identify the Nanostrength dispersion in the epoxy matrix and some DMA analyses have been performed, at different frequencies, to understand the frequency or the strain rate sensitivity of both composites. Compared to EPO_FV, EPONS_FV exhibits a significant frequency/strain rate sensitivity. Impact resistance of the composite was investigated by means of low velocity impact tests. The low velocity impact results indicate that the addition of Nanostrength leads to the improved impact resistance and an increase in absorbed energy, especially at high impact energy level. SEM observations, performed on ion polished samples, reveal the presence of micro-cracks for both composites. Micro-cracks consist of a coalescence of fibre matrix de-bonding. It was also observed that EPONS_FV contains a lower density of micro-cracks compared to EPO_FV, confirming the fact that the composite with Nanostrength absorbs more energy by Nanostrength micelles cavitation. Abstract: The purpose of this work is the study of the mechanical behaviour in 3-point bending, in static and fatigue mode, of two different composite sandwiches laminate foam with unidirectional reinforcements and crossed SMS [04] and SMS [0/902/0]. These two sandwich composites were developed in laboratory. The specimens are made of fiberglass and epoxy resin for skins and PVC foam for the core. The tests in the static mode permitted the determination of the mechanical characteristics necessary to the fatigue tests and the mechanical behaviour of the materials. The fatigue tests made in controlled force gave curves which inform about the lifetimes of the materials. The observations of the fracture surfaces revealed the different modes of damages causing the material fracture. The lifetimes are characterized by the Wöhler curves. This study evidenced the influence of the reinforcement orientation on endurance of the studied material. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
