An optical control of many working optoelectronic systems (real-time sensors, optical modulators, light amplifiers, or phase retarders) giving efficient optical gain or remote signal modulation is currently included as scientifically and industrially interesting. In here, an oxazolone derivative as the multifunctional organic system is given in this contribution. The molecule possesses a stilbene group and an oxazolone heteroatomic ring, which implies effective refractive index manipulation and multimode lasing action, respectively. The light modulation is repeatable and stable, also in the hundreds of Hz regime. On the other hand, the amplified optical signal can be easily generated by an external optical pumping source. Thus, signal control is fully available, as is read-in and read-out of the information in real time. Furthermore, this third-order, nonlinear, optical phenomenon using a third harmonic generation technique was also observed. Distributed optical fiber sensing technology has been widely applied in the areas of infrastructure health monitoring, national defense security, etc. The long-range high-spatial-resolution Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (BOCDA) has extensive development and application prospects. In this paper, long-range BOCDAs are introduced and summarized. Several creative methods underpinning measurement range enlargement, including the interval enhancement of the adjacent correlation peak (CP), improvements in the signal-to-noise ratio, and the concurrent interrogation of multiple CPs, are discussed and experimentally verified, respectively. The main drawbacks in the present BOCDA schemes and avenues for future research and development have also been prospected.

Ultra-longitudinal-compact S-bends with flexible latitudinal distances (d) are proposed and experimentally demonstrated with ultralow loss and fabrication-friendly structures by three steps based on numerical optimization. During the first step (curve optimization), insertion losses (ILs) of S-bends are significantly reduced by optimizing transition curves based on Bézier curves. During the second step (shape optimization), the ILs are further minimized by varying the widths of S-bends to increase optical confinement. In the third step (curvature optimization), considering ease of fabrication, an optimization of curvature radius is used to ensure that all feature sizes for the S-bends are larger than 200 nm. Simulation results show that for S-bends with footprints of 2.5× d μm2, the ILs are less than (0.19, 0.045, 0.18, 0.27) dB in a wavelength range of 1400–1700 nm when d is set as (3, 6, 9, 12) μm, respectively. Then, the S-bends of 2.5× 3 μm2 and 2.5× 12 μm2 are fabricated on a commercial 220-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Experimental results show that the ILs of both are less than 0.16 dB in a wavelength range of 1420–1630 nm. The lowest ILs are 0.074 dB and 0.070 dB, respectively. Moreover, in addition to the ultralow ILs and ease of fabrication, our design is flexible for designing S-bends with a flexible value of d, which makes our approach practical in large-scale photonic integrated circuits.

A multi-diffractive nanostructure is reported for the resonant excitation of surface plasmons that are cross-coupled through a thin metallic film. It consists of two superimposed periodic corrugations that allow diffraction excitation of surface plasmons on the inner side of a thin metal film and their subsequent phase matching with counterpropagating surface plasmons travelling to the opposite direction on its other side. This interaction leads to establishing of a set of cross-coupled Bragg-scattered surface plasmon modes that exhibit an electromagnetic field localized on both metal film interfaces. The reported structure is attractive for surface plasmon resonance biosensor applications, where direct optical probing can be done through the substrate without the need of optical matching to a high refractive index prism. In addition, it can be prepared by mass production – compatible means with UV-nanoimprint lithography and its biosensing performance characteristics are demonstrated by refractometric and biomolecular affinity binding studies.

Resonant biosensors are attractive for diagnostics because they can detect clinically relevant biomarkers with high sensitivity and in a label-free fashion. Most of the current solutions determine their detection limits in a highly stabilised laboratory environment, which does, however, not apply to real point-of-care applications. Here, we consider the more realistic scenario of low-cost components and an unstabilised environment and consider the related design implications. We find that sensors with lower quality-factor resonances are more fault tolerant, that a filtered LED lightsource is advantageous compared to a diode laser, and that a CMOS camera is preferable to a CCD camera for detection. We exemplify these findings with a guided mode resonance sensor and experimentally determine a limit of detection of 5.8 ± 1.7×10−5 refractive index units (RIU), which is backed up by a model identifying the various noise sources. Our findings will inform the design of high performance, low cost biosensors capable of operating in a real-world environment.

Acousto-optic imaging in diffuse media is a dual wave-sensing technique in which an acoustic field interacts with multiply scattered laser light. The acoustic field causes a phase modulation in the optical field emanating from the interaction region, and this phase-modulated optical field carries with it information about the local optomechanical properties of the media. We report on the use of a pulsed ultrasound transducer to modulate the optical field and the use of a photorefractive-crystal-based interferometry system to detect ultrasound-modulated light. The use of short pulses of focused ultrasound allows for a one-dimensional acousto-optic image to be obtained along the transducer axis from a single, time-averaged acousto-optic signal. The axial and lateral resolutions of the system are controlled by the spatial pulse length and width of the ultrasound beam, respectively. In addition, scanning the ultrasound transducer in one dimension yields two-dimensional images of optical inhomogeneities buried in turbid media.

We introduce a micro-lens imaging method that can perform easy and rapid multi-pass detection of antigen/antibody (Ag/Ab) without the requirement of any labeling, expensive enzymes, pre-immobilization/modification, and post-washing. Our method detects Ag or Ab presenting in solutions in a quantitative or qualitative manner by using micro-lens as the sensor to monitor the refractive index variation of the solutions during the primary stage of Ag-Ab reaction. The detection can be taken rapidly and finished in two minutes, while requires very low sample volume (several micron liters) and its detection limit can be as low as ∼pg/mL. The method is also able to provide kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of Ag-Ab reactions. The detections of ten Ag-Ab systems and two kinds of clinical samples demonstrated that our method is of high sensitivity, accuracy, reliability and permitting on-site analysis.

Potential applications of thin film metamaterials are diverse and their realization to offer miniaturized waveguides, antennas and shielding patterns are on anvil. These artificially engineered structures can produce astonishing electromagnetic responses because of their constituents being engineered at much smaller dimensions than the wavelength of the incident electromagnetic wave, hence behaving as artificial materials. Such micro-nano dimensions of thin film metamaterial structures can be customized for various applications due to their exclusive responses to not only electromagnetic, but also to acoustic and thermal waves that surpass the natural materials' properties. In this paper, the recent major advancements in the emerging fields of diagnostics (sensors) and therapeutics involving thin film metamaterials have been reviewed and underlined; discussing their edge over conventional counterpart techniques; concentrating on their design considerations and feasible ways of achieving them. Challenges faced in sensitivity, precision, accuracy and factors that interfere with the degree of performance of the sensors are also dealt with, herein.

Fiber-optic sensors have numerous existing and emerging applications spanning areas from industrial process monitoring to medical diagnosis. Two of the most common fiber sensors are based on the fabrication of Bragg gratings or Fabry-Perot etalons. While these techniques offer a large array of sensing targets, their utility can be limited by the difficulties involved in fabricating forward viewing probes (Bragg gratings) and in obtaining sufficient signal-to-noise ratios (Fabry-Perot systems). In this article we present a micro-scale fiber-optic force sensor produced using direct laser writing (DLW). The fabrication entails a single-step process that can be undertaken in a reliable and repeatable manner using a commercial DLW system. The sensor is made of a series of thin plates (i.e. Fabry-Perot etalons), which are supported by springs that compress under an applied force. At the proximal end of the fiber, the interferometric changes that are induced as the sensor is compressed are read out using reflectance spectroscopy, and the resulting spectral changes are calibrated with respect to applied force. This calibration is performed using either singular value decomposition (SVD) followed by linear regression or artificial neural networks. We describe the design and optimization of this device, with a particular focus on the data analysis required for calibration. Finally, we demonstrate proof-of-concept force sensing over the range 0-50 μN, with a measurement error of approximately 1.5 μN.

We present a direct, rapid and chemical-free detection method for hemoglobin concentration ([Hb]), based on photothermal angular light scattering. The iron oxides contained in hemoglobin molecules exhibit high absorption of 532-nm light and generate heat under the illumination of 532-nm light, which subsequently alters the refractive index of blood. We measured this photothermal change in refractive index by employing angular light scattering spectroscopy with the goal of quantifying [Hb] in blood samples. Highly sensitive [Hb] measurement of blood samples was performed by monitoring the shifts in angularly dispersed scattering patterns from the blood-loaded microcapillary tubes. Our system measured [Hb] over the range of 0.35-17.9 g/dL with a detection limit of ~0.12 g/dL. Our sensor was characterized by excellent correlation with a reference hematology analyzer (r>0.96), and yielded a precision of 0.63 g/dL for a blood sample of 9.0 g/dL.

Purpose To evaluate the power profile within the optic zone of different designs of multifocal contact lenses (CLs) and to analyze how the effect of pupil size could impact on their optical performance. Methods The optical power distribution within the optic zones of multifocal CLs was measured by the Nimo TR1504 (LAMBDA-X, Belgium). The multifocal CLs under study were the Acuvue Bifocal, the Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia, the PureVision Multifocal and the PureVision 2 for Presbyopia. Each design was considered in all their available addition powers. All lenses had a nominal power of −3.0D. At the same time, three lenses of each model were considered and five consecutive readings of each lens were performed. Results The results show that the PureVision Multifocal and the PureVision 2 for Presbyopia have aspheric power profiles. Both designs showed aspheric center-near designs with a smoother progression of the optical power in the PureVision 2 for Presbyopia. The Acuvue Bifocal and the Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia are shown to have concentric alternating near and far zones. Apart from the refractive rings, the Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia showed an increase in negative (or less positive) values toward the periphery of the lens. Conclusions Besides the refraction, the knowledge of the power profiles of multifocal CLs and the effect of pupil size on the optical distribution of these lenses could be crucial to understand the performance of these designs when they are fitted.

Methicillin-resistance among Staphylococcus species is a major health problem in hospitals, communities, and animals. There is a need for culture-free diagnostic assays that can be carried out rapidly, and maintain a high degree of sensitivity and specificity. To address this need an ionic self-assembled multilayer (ISAM) film was deposited on the surface of a long-period grating (LPG) optical fiber by immersion alternately in poly-allylamine hydrochloride and in poly-1-[p-(3′-carboxy-4′-hydroxyphenylazo) benzenesulfonamido]-1,2-ethandiyl (PCBS), resulting in terminal carboxyl groups on the LPG-ISAM. The terminal carboxyl groups were covalently conjugated to monoclonal antibodies (MAb) specific to penicillin-binding-protein 2a of methicillin resistant (MR) staphylococci. After exposure of the LPG-ISAM to 102 colony forming units (CFU)/ml of MR S. aureus (MRSA) for 50 min., light transmission was reduced by 19.7%. In contrast, after exposure to 106 CFU/ml of methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) attenuation of light transmission was less than 1.8%. Exposure of the LPG-ISAM to extracts of liver, lungs, or spleen from mice infected with MRSA attenuated light transmission by 11.7–73.5%. In contrast, exposure of the biosensor to extracts from MSSA-infected mice resulted in 5.6% or less attenuation of light transmission. When the sensor was tested with 36 strains of MR staphylococci, 15 strains of methicillin-sensitive staphylococci, 10 strains of heterologous genera (all at 104 CFU/ml), or tissue samples from mice infected with MRSA, there was complete agreement between MR and non-MR bacteria determined by antibiotic susceptibility testing and the biosensor assay when the cutoff value for attenuation of light transmission was 6.3%. Thus, the biosensor described has the potential to detect MR staphylococci in clinical samples with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity.

A simple technique designed for visualization of ultrasound fields without Schlieren optics is introduced. An optical system of direct shadowgraphy with diverging light, which consists of a point light source and a shadow screen, constituted the basic system, but the screen was replaced by focusing optics: a camera that makes a virtual screen at its focus plane. The proposed technique visualizes displacement of light deflected by ultrasound, and the use of focusing optics enables flexible settings of the virtual screen position and optical magnification. Insufficient sensitivity of shadowgraphy was overcome by elimination of non-deflecting light using image subtraction of shadowgrams taken with and without ultrasound exposure. A 1-MHz focused transducer for ultrasound therapy and a 20-MHz miniature transducer for intravascular imaging were used for experiments, and alternate pressure change in short-pulsed ultrasound was visualized, indicating the usefulness of the proposed technique for evaluation of medical ultrasound fields.

In this work, two different configurations for novel amplified fluorescence polarization (FP) aptasensors based on nicking enzyme signal amplification (NESA) and graphene oxide (GO) enhancement have been developed for ultrasensitive and selective detection of biomolecules in homogeneous solution. One approach involves the aptamer-target binding induced the stable hybridization between an aptamer probe and a fluorophore-labeled DNA probe linked to GO, and forms a nicking site-containing duplex DNA region due to the enhancement of base stacking. The second analytical method involves the target induced the assembly of two aptamer subunits into an aptamer-target complex, and then hybridizes with a fluorophore-labeled DNA probe linked to GO, forming a nicking site-containing duplex DNA region. The formation of the duplex DNA region in both methods triggers the NESA process, resulting in the release of many short DNA fragments carrying the fluorophore from GO, generating a significant decrease of the FP value that provides the readout signal for the amplified sensing process. By using the NESA coupled GO enhancement path, the sensitivity of the developed aptasensors can be significantly improved by four orders of magnitude over traditional aptamer-based homogeneous assays. Moreover, these aptasensors also exhibit high specificity for target molecules, which are capable of detecting target molecule in biological samples. Considering these qualities, the proposed FP aptasensors based NESA and GO enhancement can be expected to provide an ultrasensitive platform for amplified analysis of target molecules.

We report a novel optical single-emitter-localization methodology that uses the phase induced by path length differences in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer to improve localization precision. Using information theory, we demonstrate that the localization capability of a modified Fourier domain signal generated by photon interference enables a more precise localization compared to a standard Gaussian intensity distribution of the corresponding point spread function. The calculations were verified by numerical simulations and an exemplary experiment, where the centers of metal nanoparticles were localized to a precision of 3 nm.

Microstructured optical fibers containing microchannels and Bragg grating inscribed were internally functionalized with a peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probe specific for a gene tract of the genetically modified Roundup Ready soy. These fibers were used as an optofluidic device for the detection of DNA by measuring the shift in the wavelength of the reflected IR light. Enhancement of optical read-out was obtained using streptavidin coated gold-nanoparticles interacting with the genomic DNA captured in the fiber channels (0%, 0.1%, 1% and 10% RR-Soy), enabling to achieve statistically significant, label-free, and amplification-free detection of target DNA in low concentrations, low percentages, and very low sample volumes. Computer simulations of the fiber optics based on the finite element method (FEM) were consistent with the formation of a layer of organic material with an average thickness of 39 nm for the highest percentage (10% RR soy) analysed.

We report on a tunable continuous-wave mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (OPO), which is locked to a fully stabilized near-infrared optical frequency comb using a frequency doubling scheme. The OPO is used for 40 GHz mode-hop-free, frequency-comb-locked scans in the wavelength region between 2.7 and 3.4 μm. We demonstrate the applicability of the method to high-precision cavity-ring-down spectroscopy of nitrous oxide (N2O) and water (H2O) at 2.85 μm and of methane (CH4) at 3.2 μm.

In this paper, we propose a volatile organic compound (VOC) gas sensing system with high sensitivity and a wide dynamic range that is based on the principle of the heterodyne frequency modulation method. According to this method, the time period of the sensing signal shift when Nile Red containing a VOC-sensitive membrane of a fiber-optic sensing element comes into contact with a VOC. This sensing membrane produces strong, fast and reversible signals when exposed to VOC gases. The response and recovery times of the proposed sensing system were less than 35 s, and good reproducibility and accuracy were obtained.

This paper describes a new class of structured optical materials--lattice opto-materials--that can manipulate the flow of visible light into a wide range of three-dimensional profiles using evolutionary design principles. Lattice opto-materials are based on the discretization of a surface into a two-dimensional (2D) subwavelength lattice whose individual lattice sites can be controlled to achieve a programmed optical response. To access a desired optical property, we designed a lattice evolutionary algorithm that includes and optimizes contributions from every element in the lattice. Lattice opto-materials can exhibit simple properties, such as on- and off-axis focusing, and can also concentrate light into multiple, discrete spots. We expanded the unit cell shapes of the lattice to achieve distinct, polarization-dependent optical responses from the same 2D patterned substrate. Finally, these lattice opto-materials can also be combined into architectures that resemble a new type of compound flat lens.

In this paper seven salts of pyridinium-substituted tetraphenylethylene with different anions are reported. They show typical aggregation-induced emission. Crystal structures of three of the salts with (CF(3)SO(2))(2) N(-), CF(3) SO(3)(-), and SbF(6)(-) as the respective counter anions, are determined. The emission behavior of their amorphous and crystalline solids is investigated. Both amorphous and crystalline solids, except for the one with I(-), are highly emissive. Certain amorphous solids are red-emissive with almost the same quantum yields and fluorescence life-times. However, some crystalline solids are found to show different emission colors varying from green to yellow. Thus, their emission colors can be tuned by the counter anions. Furthermore, certain crystalline solids are highly emissive compared to the respective amorphous solids. Such solid-state emission behavior of these pyridinium-substituted tetraphenylethylene salts is interpreted on the basis of their crystal structures. In addition, optical waveguiding behavior of fabricated microrods is presented.

A selective fluorescent-free detection method of biomolecules on nanoarray biochips was developed based on wavelength-dependent single plasmonic nanoparticles by differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy. As a model target protein molecule, human cardiac troponin I (cTnI) was bound between primary anti-cTnI oriented on gold-nanopatterned chips (GNCs) and secondary silver nanoparticle (SNP) anti-cTnI. SNPs were employed as non-fluorescent probes to determine the immuno-reaction. Gold and silver exhibited clear peaks with DIC contrast at different wavelengths because plasmonic noble metals display extraordinarily large apparent refractive indices near their plasmon resonance wavelengths. Therefore, when the SNPs-cTnI antibody was bound to GNC, the normalized maximum intensity of the DIC contrast was blue-shifted. A linear relationship of the calibration curve was obtained between the DIC intensity and cTnI concentration in the range of 85 aM–10 fM without spectroscopic interference. This combination method of wavelength-dependent DIC microscopy and plasmonic nanoparticles could overcome the limitations of the potential for nonspecific labeling by promiscuous antibodies and the lack of reagents or biomarkers for disease-specific applications.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) has been recognized as an important prognostic marker expressed in cancer cells because its activation is associated with key features of cancer including tumor growth, survival, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Cetuximab is the first monoclonal antibody drug that targets EGFR overexpressed in cancer cells. It easily binds to EGFR, thereby down-regulating the receptor, blocking EGFR-mediated tyrosine kinase activity, and inhibiting cellular proliferation. Thus, EGFR–cetuximab binding can be quantified to monitor receptor status and the prognosis of cancer therapy. In this work, we report using SERS imaging to assess the inhibitory effect of cetuximab on EGFR expressed on cancer cells. From SERS mapping images using silica-encapsulated gold nanotags, the localized spatial distribution of EGFR that was not inhibited by cetuximab could be determined. Furthermore, EGFR expression could be accurately quantified through the statistical analysis of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectral data. Our experimental data demonstrate the feasibility of SERS imaging to improve the prognostic efficacy of cetuximab treatment.

We demonstrate the ability of Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) sensors to protect large areas from unauthorized activities in railway scenarios such as stations or tunnels. We report on the technological strategy adopted to protect a specific depot, representative of a common scenario for security applications in the railway environment. One of the concerns in the protection of a railway area centers on the presence of rail-tracks, which cannot be obstructed with physical barriers. We propose an integrated optical fiber system composed of FBG strain sensors that can detect human intrusion for protection of the perimeter combined with FBG accelerometer sensors for protection of rail-track access. Several trials were carried out in indoor and outdoor environments. The results demonstrate that FBG strain sensors bonded under a ribbed rubber mat enable the detection of intruder break-in via the pressure induced on the mat, whereas the FBG accelerometers installed under the rails enable the detection of intruders walking close to the railroad tracks via the acoustic surface waves generated by footsteps. Based on a single enabling technology, this integrated system represents a valuable intrusion detection system for railway security and could be integrated with other sensing functionalities in the railway field using fiber optic technology.

Along with the dose rate and the total irradiation dose measurements, the knowledge of the beam localization and the beam profile/energy distribution in the beam are parameters of interest for charged particle accelerator installations when they are used in scientific investigations, industrial applications or medical treatments. The transverse profile of the beam, its position, its centroid location, and its focus or flatness depend on the instrument operating conditions or on the beam exit setup. Proof-of-concept of a new type of charged particle beam diagnostics based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) was demonstrated. Its operating principle relies on the measurement of the peak wavelength changes for an array of FBG sensors as function of the temperature following the exposure to an electron beam. Periodically, the sensor irradiation is stopped and the FBG are force cooled to a reference temperature with which the temperature influencing each sensor during beam exposure is compared. Commercially available FBGs, and FBGs written in radiation resistant optical fibers, were tested under electron beam irradiation in order to study their possible use in this application.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a novel optical sensing technique with a unique ability to monitor molecular binding in real-time for biological and chemical sensor applications. Interferometry is an excellent tool for accurate measurement of SPR changes, the measurement and comparison is made for the sensitivity, dynamic range and resolution of the different analytes using interferometry techniques. SPR interferometry can also employ phase detection in addition to the amplitude of the reflected light wave, and the phase changes more rapidly compared with other approaches, i.e., intensity, angle and wavelength. Therefore, the SPR phase interferometer offers the advantages of spatial phase resolution and high sensitivity. This work discusses the advancements in interferometric SPR methods to measure the phase shifts due to refractive index changes. The main application areas of SPR sensors are demonstrated, i.e., the Fabry-Perot interferometer, Michelson interferometer and Mach-Zehnder interferometer, with different configurations. The three interferometers are discussed in detail, and solutions are suggested to enhance the performance parameters that will aid in future biological and chemical sensors.

Phase sensitive Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) techniques are a popular means of characterizing biomolecular interactions. However, limitations due to the narrow dynamic range and difficulty in adapting the method for multi-point sensing have restricted its range of applications. This paper presents a compact phase sensitive SPR technology using a custom CMOS camera. The system is exceptionally versatile enabling one to trade dynamic range for sensitivity without altering the optical system. We present results showing sensitivity over the array of better than 10−6 Refractive Index Units (RIU) over a refractive index range of 2×10−2 RIU, with peak sensitivity of 3×10−7 RIU at the center of this range. We also explain how simply altering the settings of polarization components can give sensitivity on the order of 10−8 RIU albeit at the cost of lower dynamic range. The consistent response of the custom CMOS camera in the system also allowed us to demonstrate precise quantitative detection of two Fibrinogen antibody–protein binding sites. Moreover, we use the system to determine reaction kinetics and argue how the multipoint detection gives useful insight into the molecular binding mechanisms., Highlights • We introduced a SPR sensor with an optimal sensitivity of 3×10−7 RIU. • Sensitivity better than 10−6 RIU was achieved for refractive index 1.33 ~1.35 RIU. • Relation between responsivity and dynamic range was illustrated. • Potential performance (sensitivity of 4.7×10−8 RIU) was estimated. • New AC detector enabling multi-point sensing was introduced.

Integrated planar optical waveguide interferometer biosensors are advantageous combinations of evanescent field sensing and optical phase difference measurement methods. By probing the near surface region of a sensor area with the evanescent field, any change of the refractive index of the probed volume induces a phase shift of the guided mode compared to a reference field typically of a mode propagating through the reference arm of the same waveguide structure. The interfering fields of these modes produce an interference signal detected at the sensor[U+05F3]s output, whose alteration is proportional to the refractive index change. This signal can be recorded, processed and related to e.g. the concentration of an analyte in the solution of interest. Although this sensing principle is relatively simple, studies about integrated planar optical waveguide interferometer biosensors can mostly be found in the literature covering the past twenty years. During these two decade s, several members of this sensor family have been introduced, which have remarkably advantageous properties. These entail label-free and non-destructive detection, outstandingly good sensitivity and detection limit, cost-effective and simple production, ability of multiplexing and miniaturization. Furthermore, these properties lead to low reagent consumption, short analysis time and open prospects for point-of-care applications. The present review collects the most relevant developments of the past twenty years categorizing them into two main groups, such as common- and double path waveguide interferometers. In addition, it tries to maintain the historical order as it is possible and it compares the diverse sensor designs in order to reveal not only the development of this field in time, but to contrast the advantages and disadvantages of the different approaches and sensor families, as well.

Background The quantitative difference of the light reflected from a skin surface can be analyzed using parallel-polarized light (PPL) photography when combined with an analytic technique similar to colorimetric photography. Objective To improve the PPL photography technique as an assessment tool for the evaluation of skin condition using light-emitting diodes (LED) of different colors. Method Parallel-polarized light images were taken using white and green LED illuminators. The acquired images were transformed to CIELAB coordinates. An in-house skin conductance meter was constructed to assess skin hydration level. A dermatologist evaluated the clinical grading of dryness and glossiness. These clinical severities were also compared statistically with the CIELAB values. Results As with the green illuminator, the correlation analysis of whole sites showed that the L* value positively correlated with age (r = 0.18677, P

A new photonics biosensor configuration comprising a Double-side Ring Add-drop Filter microring resonator (DR-ADF) made from SiO2-TiO2 material is proposed for the detection of Salmonella bacteria (SB) in blood. The scattering matrix method using inductive calculation is used to determine the output signal's intensities in the blood with and without presence of Salmonella. The change in refractive index due to the reaction of Salmonella bacteria with its applied antibody on the flagellin layer loaded on the sensing and detecting microresonator causes the increase in through and dropper port's intensities of the output signal which leads to the detection of SB in blood. A shift in the output signal wavelength is observed with resolution of 0.01 nm. The change in intensity and shift in wavelength is analyzed with respect to the change in the refractive index which contributes toward achieving an ultra-high sensitivity of 95,500 nm/RIU which is almost two orders higher than that of reported from single ring sensors and the limit of detection is in the order of 1 × 10(-8) RIU. In applications, such a system can be employed for a high sensitive and fast detection of bacteria.

Purpose To assess the transmittance, in the 200–700 nm electromagnetic radiation spectrum, by popularly used tinted soft contact lenses (CLs). Method The spectra transmittances of ultraviolet (UV)-blocking (I Day Acuvue Define, Freshlook ONE DAY) and non-UV-blocking (Durasoft 3, Tutti, and NeoCosmo) tinted soft CLs were tested. The transmittance of each lens, including nine different colors of Freshlook CL was recorded on spectrophotometer, and the data used to also calculate a UV protection factor (PF) for each lens brand tested, with a higher value indicating a higher level of protection. Results The UV-blocking CLs significantly reduced UVC, UVB & UVA transmission and thereby meet the American National Standards Institution standard for class 2 UV blockers: a maximum of 30% transmittance of UVA and 5% transmittance of UVB wavelengths. In contrast, the Durasoft 3, Tutti, and NeoCosmo CLs demonstrated negligible UV-blockage. The Acuvue Define CL offered the greatest protection from UVC (PF = 69) and UVB (PF = 55), but with only 35% luminous transmittance, while the Freshlook CL (especially gemstone green) offered the best protection from UVA (PF = 24) and showed about 55% translucency. Overall, the UV-blocking CLs performed equally well across the UV spectrum. Different colors of Freshlook CL transmitted statistically and clinically significantly different amounts of visible light but similar amounts of UVR. Conclusion Freshlook and Acuvue Define CLs which are designated as UV-blockers significantly reduced UVR transmission to safe levels whereas Tutti, NeoCosmo and Durasoft 3 did not. Transmission within the Freshlook CL family was more dependent on color in the visible light spectrum, but not in the UV-spectrum, where the gemstone green performing best among the tested colors.

Background & Purpose Implantation of an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) during cataract surgery significantly changes the balance of aberrations in the eye. We demonstrate the theoretical superiority of customized aspheric IOL designs over standard spherical IOLs for different values of corneal curvature, asphericity and axial length. Methods For a selected set of corneal surfaces we calculated a best-fit equiconvex spherical IOL. In a second step we customized the IOL back surface to correct the wavefront aberrations of the cornea. Then we calculated a quadric approximation of the IOL back surface to retrieve the aspheric parameters of the customized lens in terms of radius of curvature and asphericity/conic constant. The optical performance of the three IOL models was monitored in terms of lateral ray spread (LRS) at retinal plane for variations of corneal curvatures, asphericity and axial lengths of the pseudophakic eye. Results The LRS of customized aspheric IOLs was significantly smaller compared to that of spherical IOLs (typically between 10 and 25 dB). For high aspheric coefficients the LRS increased with spherical IOLs. With aspheric IOLs LRS was higher for steep corneas paired with high aspheric coefficients, mostly due to the fitting error of the quadratic function. For several combinations of corneal curvature and aspheric coefficients the focal point of the aspheric IOL was up to 400 times smaller than the spherical one. Conclusion This study appeals to the reader for the potential benefit of customized aspheric IOL design instead of the principle of a ‘one size fits all’ aspheric coefficient as used currently in clinical practice. A benefit with customized IOLs is less depending from the axial length and can be achieved with corneas of a moderate prolate aspheric shape with an equal or more negative Q value than the average of -0.22. Longer eyes seem to benefit less than short eyes.

Understanding as well as realistic reproduction of the appearance of materials play an important role in computer graphics, computer vision and industry. They enable applications such as digital material design, virtual prototyping and faithful virtual surrogates for entertainment, marketing, education or cultural heritage documentation. A particularly fruitful way to obtain the digital appearance is the acquisition of reflectance from real-world material samples. Therefore, a great variety of devices to perform this task has been proposed. In this work, we investigate their practical usefulness. We first identify a set of necessary attributes and establish a general categorization of different designs that have been realized. Subsequently, we provide an in-depth discussion of three particular implementations by our work group, demonstrating advantages and disadvantages of different system designs with respect to the previously established attributes. Finally, we survey the existing literature to compare our implementation with related approaches.

A new method of harmonics rejection based on X-ray refractive optics has been proposed. Taking into account the fact that the focal distance of the refractive lens is energy-dependent, the use of an off-axis illumination of the lens immediately leads to spatial separation of the energy spectrum by focusing the fundamental harmonic at the focal point and suppressing the unfocused high-energy radiation with a screen absorber or slit. The experiment was performed at the ESRF ID06 beamline in the in-line geometry using an X-ray transfocator with compound refractive lenses. Using this technique the presence of the third harmonic has been reduced to 10−3. In total, our method enabled suppression of all higher-order harmonics to five orders of magnitude using monochromator detuning. The method is well suited to third-generation synchrotron radiation sources and is very promising for the future ultimate storage rings.

A bent Laue beam-expanding double-crystal monochromator was developed and tested at the Biomedical Imaging and Therapy beamline at the Canadian Light Source. The expander will reduce scanning time for micro-computed tomography and allow dynamic imaging that has not previously been possible at this beamline., The Biomedical Imaging and Therapy (BMIT) beamline at the Canadian Light Source has produced some excellent biological imaging data. However, the disadvantage of a small vertical beam limits its usability in some applications. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging requires multiple scans to produce a full projection, and certain dynamic imaging experiments are not possible. A larger vertical beam is desirable. It was cost-prohibitive to build a longer beamline that would have produced a large vertical beam. Instead, it was proposed to develop a beam expander that would create a beam appearing to originate at a source much farther away. This was accomplished using a bent Laue double-crystal monochromator in a non-dispersive divergent geometry. The design and implementation of this beam expander is presented along with results from the micro-CT and dynamic imaging tests conducted with this beam. Flux (photons per unit area per unit time) has been measured and found to be comparable with the existing flat Bragg double-crystal monochromator in use at BMIT. This increase in overall photon count is due to the enhanced bandwidth of the bent Laue configuration. Whilst the expanded beam quality is suitable for dynamic imaging and micro-CT, further work is required to improve its phase and coherence properties.

Recently, nanoscale metallic particles have been studied extensively due to their tunable and strong optical properties that are well beyond those of organic chromophores. As monometallic nanoparticles have shown strong but narrow absorption bands within the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths, the preparation of bimetallic core-shell structures can give rise to strong, wide, and tunable absorption bands across the visible to near infrared areas. The silver-gold bimetallic nanoparticles with core-shell structures can offer unique physical and optical properties inaccessible to monometallic systems. These nanoparticles have been utilized in many areas of research including chemical catalysis, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and photothermal therapy. This review article is a comprehensive overview of bimetallic nanoparticle systems consisting of gold and silver; it is based on the recent advances in wet-chemical synthetic methodologies, the characterization of size and shape-dependent optical properties, and various optically driven applications including catalysis, signal-enhancing devices, and biomedical purposes.

This paper reviews the recent research and development of one-dimensional (1D) organic nanomaterials synthesized from organic semiconductors or conducting polymers and their applications to optoelectronics. We introduce synthetic methodologies for the fabrication of 1D single-crystalline organic nanomaterials and 1D multi-component organic nanostructures, and discuss their optical and electrical properties. In addition, their versatile applications in optoelectronics are highlighted. The fabrication of highly crystalline organic nanomaterials combined with their integration into nanoelectronic devices is recognized as one of the most promising strategies to enhance charge transport properties and achieve device miniaturization. In the last part of this review, we discuss the challenges and the perspectives of organic nanomaterials for applications in the next generation soft electronics, in terms of fabrication, processing, device integration, and investigation on the fundamental mechanisms governing the charge transport behaviors of these advanced materials.

Holograms, the optical devices to reconstruct predesigned images, show many applications in our daily life. However, applications of hologram are still limited by the constituent materials and therefore their working range is trapped at a particular electromagnetic region. In recent years, the metasurfaces, an array of subwavelength antenna with varying sizes, show the abilities to manipulate the phase of incident electromagnetic wave from visible to microwave frequencies. Here, we present a reflective-type and high-efficiency meta- hologram fabricated by metasurface for visible wavelength. Using gold cross nanoantennas as building blocks to construct our meta-hologram devices with thickness ∼ λ/4, the reconstructed images of meta-hologram show polarization- controlled dual images with high contrast, functioning for both coherent and incoherent light sources within a broad spectral range and under a wide range of incidence angles. The flexibility demonstrated here for our meta-hologram paves the road to a wide range of applications related to holographic images at arbitrary electromagnetic wave region.

Index-matched indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes for capacitive touch screen panels have been fabricated to improve optical transmittance and reduce the difference of reflectance (deltaR) between the etched and un-etched regions. 8.5 nm Nb2O5 and 49 nm SiO2 thin films were deposited by magnetron sputtering as index-matching layers between an ITO electrode and a glass substrate. In case of 30 nm ITO electrode, a 4.3% improvement in the optical transmittance and a deltaR of less than 1% were achieved, along with a low sheet resistance of 90 omega/square.

We fabricated a novel fiber-optic Cerenkov radiation sensor using a Cerenkov radiator for measuring beta-particles. Instead of employing a scintillator, transparent liquids having various refractive indices were used as a Cerenkov radiator to serve as a sensing material. The experimental results showed that the amount of Cerenkov radiation due to the interaction with beta-particles increased as the refractive index of the Cerenkov radiator was increased as a results of a decrease of the Cerenkov threshold energy for electrons.

Coded Structured Light techniques represent one of the most attractive research areas within the field of optical metrology. The coding procedures are typically based on projecting either a single pattern or a temporal sequence of patterns to provide 3D surface data. In this context, multi-slit or stripe colored patterns may be used with the aim of reducing the number of projected images. However, color imaging sensors require the use of calibration procedures to address crosstalk effects between different channels and to reduce the chromatic aberrations. In this paper, a Coded Structured Light system has been developed by integrating a color stripe projector and a monochrome camera. A discrete coding method, which combines spatial and temporal information, is generated by sequentially projecting and acquiring a small set of fringe patterns. The method allows the concurrent measurement of geometrical and chromatic data by exploiting the benefits of using a monochrome camera. The proposed methodology has been validated by measuring nominal primitive geometries and free-form shapes. The experimental results have been compared with those obtained by using a time-multiplexing gray code strategy.

A simple and compact fiber optic sensor based on a two-core fiber is demonstrated for high-performance measurements of refractive indices (RI) of liquids. In order to demonstrate the suitability of the proposed sensor to perform high-sensitivity sensing in a variety of applications, the sensor has been used to measure the RI of binary liquid mixtures. Such measurements can accurately determine the salinity of salt water solutions, and detect the water content of adulterated alcoholic beverages. The largest sensitivity of the RI sensor that has been experimentally demonstrated is 3,119 nm per Refractive Index Units (RIU) for the RI range from 1.3160 to 1.3943. On the other hand, our results suggest that the sensitivity can be enhanced up to 3485.67 nm/RIU approximately for the same RI range.

We developed an X-ray phase imaging system based on Talbot-Lau interferometry and studied its feasibility for clinical diagnoses of joint diseases. The system consists of three X-ray gratings, a conventional X-ray tube, an object holder, an X-ray image sensor, and a computer for image processing. The joints of human cadavers and healthy volunteers were imaged, and the results indicated sufficient sensitivity to cartilage, suggesting medical significance.

This paper is a theoretical analysis of mirror tilt in a Michelson interferometer and its effect on the radiant flux over the active area of a rectangular photodetector or image sensor pixel. It is relevant to sensor applications using homodyne interferometry where these opto-electronic devices are employed for partial fringe counting. Formulas are derived for radiant flux across the detector for variable location within the fringe pattern and with varying wave front angle. The results indicate that the flux is a damped sine function of the wave front angle, with a decay constant of the ratio of wavelength to detector width. The modulation amplitude of the dynamic fringe pattern reduces to zero at wave front angles that are an integer multiple of this ratio and the results show that the polarity of the radiant flux changes exclusively at these multiples. Varying tilt angle causes radiant flux oscillations under an envelope curve, the frequency of which is dependent on the location of the detector with the fringe pattern. It is also shown that a fringe count of zero can be obtained for specific photodetector locations and wave front angles where the combined effect of fringe contraction and fringe tilt can have equal and opposite effects. Fringe tilt as a result of a wave front angle of 0.05° can introduce a phase measurement difference of 16° between a photodetector/pixel located 20 mm and one located 100 mm from the optical origin.
