Five new eriophyoid mites infesting weeds of the family Poaceae are described and illustrated from Egypt. They are Abacarus stagninis sp. nov. from Echinochloa stagnina (Retz.) P. Beauv., vagrants in grooves between veins on the upper leaf surface, causing discoloration of the leaves; and four new species from genus Aceria (A. echinochloae sp. nov., A. barnyardi sp. nov., and A. stagninis sp. nov.) from E. stagnina and E. crus–galli (L.) Beauv., and Aceria pennisetosa sp. nov., from Pennisetum purpureum Schumach. These species are vagrants underneath inner surface of the leaf sheath around stem and no symptoms were observed. However, A. barnyardi sp. nov. is a vagrant underneath inner surface of the leaf sheath around stem and are endoparasitic inside tissue of leaves causing rusted leaves.

One new genus and six new species of eriophyoid mite from Mountain Trusmadi, Malaysia are described and illustrated. They are Isoannulus morrisianae sp. nov. on Diospyros morrisiana (Ebenaceae), Abacarus bicolorus sp. nov. on Lespedeza bicolor (Leguminosae), Parneometaculus persicariae gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Persicaria chinensis (Polygonaceae), Shevtchenkella miscanthis sp. nov. on Miscanthus floridulus (Poaceae), Davisella nitidis sp. nov. on Artocarpus nitidus subsp. lingnanensis (Moraceae), and Vimola blastis sp. nov. on Blastus cochinchinensis (Melastomataceae). Furthermore, two new records of eriophyoid mites are found: Knorella bambusae (Kuang & Feng, 1989) rec. nov. on Bambusa sp. (Poaceae) and Diptilomiopus melastomae (Boczek & Chandrapatya, 2002) rec. nov. on Melastoma malabathricum (Melastomataceae). All these new eriophyoid mite species and new records are vagrants causing no apparent symptom to their host plants.

Eriophyoid mites (superfamily Eriophyoidea) comprise >4400 species worldwide. Despite over a century of study, the phylogenetic position of these mites within Acariformes is still poorly resolved. Currently, Eriophyoidea is placed in the order Trombidiformes. We inferred the high-level phylogeny of Acari with the mitochondrial (mt) genome sequences of 110 species including four eriophyoid species, and the nuclear small subunit (18S) rRNA gene sequences of 226 species including 25 eriophyoid species. Maximum likelihood (ML), Bayesian inference (BI) and Maximum parsimony (MP) methods were used to analyze the sequence data. Divergence times were estimated for major lineages of Acari using Bayesian approaches. Our analyses consistently recovered the monophyly of Eriophyoidea but rejected the monophyly of Trombidiformes. The eriophyoid mites were grouped with the sarcoptiform mites, or were the sister group of sarcoptiform mites+non-eriophyoid trombidiform mites, depending on data partition strategies. Eriophyoid mites diverged from other mites in the Devonian (384Mya, 95% HPD, 352-410Mya). The origin of eriophyoid mites was dated to the Permian (262Mya, 95% HPD 230-307Mya), mostly prior to the radiation of gymnosperms (Triassic-Jurassic) and angiosperms (early Cretaceous). We propose that the placement of Eriophyoidea in the order Trombidiformes under the current classification system should be reviewed.

Two new eriophyid mite species associated with Clematis terniflora var. mandshurica, namely Aculops jilinensis sp. n. and Phyllocoptes terniflores sp. n., are described. Both species infest the tender leaves of host plants, inducing severe curling and blistering.

The Eriophyoidea, notable for specific morphological characters (four-legged mites) and gall-formation in host plants (gall mites), is one of the most species-rich superfamilies of Acari. Monophyly of the superfamily Eriophyoidea is accepted by all acarologists; however, monophyly of most genera has not been evaluated in a molecular phylogenetic network. Furthermore, most eriophyoid mites, especially species in the genus Diptilomiopus, are morphologically similar, challenging their identification. Here we test the phylogeny and cryptic diversity of Diptilomiopus species using fragments of two mitochondrial (COI and 12S) and two nuclear (18S and 28S) genes. Our results revealed the monophyly of Diptilomiopus. Sequence distance, barcode gap, and species delimitation analyses of the COI gene allowed us to resolve cryptic diversity of Diptilomiopus species. Additionally, we supposed that characteristics of genu fused with femur on both legs and seta ft′ absent on leg II evolved only once within Diptilomiopus, which are potential morphological synapomorphies. In contrast, characteristics of both setae ft′ and ft″ divided into a short branch and a long branch were supposed evolving multiple times independently. Our findings contribute to the understanding of phylogeny and morphological evolution of Diptilomiopus species and provide a DNA-based approach for species delimitation of Diptilomiopus mites.

Two new species of the family Eriophyidae (Acari: Eriophyoidea) from Mount Trusmadi, Malaysia, are described and illustrated. They are Neodicrothrix grandcaputus sp. nov. on Stachyurus himalaicus (Stachyuraceae) and Latitudo asiaticis sp. nov. on Psychotria asiatica (Rubiaceae). Both of the two new species are vagrant on the lower leaf surface. No damage to the host was observed. In addition to the description, a key to species of Neodicrothrix is provided.

A new genus and two new species of mites in the family Eriophyidae, Theaphyes rapaneae gen. n. and sp. n. which is found on the type host Rapanea neriifolia (Sieb. et Zucc.) Mez (Myrsinaceae) and Paracaphyllisa theacea sp. n., are described and illustrated. They are vagrants on the tea plant Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze and no apparent symptoms were detected. A key to the eriophyoid mites including thirteen species associated with tea plants all over the world is provided.

The superfamily Eriophyoidea is exceptionally diverse and its members are highly host-specific. Currently, the taxonomy of this group is based on morphology only. However, phylogenetic relationships in this group could be incorrect if the diagnostic morphological characters are homoplastic. Therefore, the phylogeny of 112 representative taxa of Eriophyoidea from China was determined using 18S, 28S D2-5 and D9-10 rRNA. Phylogenetic relationships were inferred through Bayesian, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods, and then a number of clades or major clades were defined according to robust phylogenetic topologies combined with morphological comparison. Tests of monophyly showed that two of three families of Eriophyoidea as well as one subfamily and four tribes were not monophyletic. Ancestral character state reconstruction (ACSR) showed that five diagnostic morphological characters evolved several times, confounding the current taxonomy. Additionally, reconstruction of the history of host plant colonization suggested host switching occurred in a limited range of host plants. The host association data made it possible to determine taxonomic relationships more accurately. These results show that by integrating morphological and molecular information and host plant choice, it is possible to obtain a more accurate taxonomy and a deeper phylogenetic understanding of Eriophyoidea.

Traditional morphology-based taxonomy of eriophyoid mites (Acari: Eriophyoidea) has been challenged by molecular-based technologies in the detection of cryptic species. However, the implications of such cryptic diversity appear to differ when methods based on different types of data are used. Here, samples of a host-associated eriophyoid mite species,Tetra pinnatifidae, collected from different host plants and localities are evaluated. The congruence of results based on morphometric (32 characters), mitochondrial (16S), and nuclear (28S) data were evaluated and showed a host-associated cryptic diversity dividing this morphospecies into several groups/clades that were morphometrically indistinguishable. In comparison, the 16S data confirmed cryptic speciation and intra-clade host-associated diversity, while 28S did not. In contrast, 28S data revealed potential gene flow between host-associated populations. High mitochondrial divergence, as well as low nuclear and morphological divergence indicated very recent stage of cryptic diversity of this eriophyoid mite.

A new genus and two new species of the family Eriophyidae (Acari: Eriophyoidea) from Mountain Trusmadi, Malaysia are described and illustrated. They are Trusmadius acalypher gen. nov. and sp. nov. on Acalypha sp. (Euphorbiaceae) and Paraphytoptus lithocarpis sp. nov. on Lithocarpus uvariifolius (Hance) Rehder (Fagaceae). Both new species are vagrant on lower leaf surface. No damage to the host was observed.

Herbivorous arthropods can diversify as a consequence of evolutionary changes in response to their plant hosts. Current patterns of host association of herbivores are likely to reflect a long evolutionary history of herbivore-plant co-evolution. Here, we used molecular phylogenetics to track the evolutionary history of host shifts and diversification of 66 eriophyoid mites (Acari, Eriophyoidea), and linked past patterns of evolutionary diversification to more recent patterns of divergence by tracking population genetic variation in 13 of the eriophyoid mite species feeding on different gymnosperm hosts. This allowed us to explore the relationship between a past history of diversification and the current potential of mites to undergo host range shifts. We found that population-level diversity across gymnosperm hosts as measured by 28S rRNA markers was greater in species from the mite clade that had radiated across evolutionary time to utilize a variety of hosts including angiosperms, compared to species from the clade that has remained restricted to ancestral gymnosperm hosts. Species from the radiated clade exhibited higher variation in host use. Lineages of mites that have in the past been able to radiate and adapt to diverse plants may therefore be predisposed to continue their expansion on new hosts, although additional clades need to be tested.

The subclass Acari (mites and ticks) comprises two super-orders: Acariformes and Parasitiformes. Most species of the Parasitiformes known retained the ancestral pattern of mitochondrial (mt) gene arrangement of arthropods and their mt tRNAs have the typical cloverleaf structure. All of the species of the Acariformes known, however, have rearranged mt genomes and truncated mt tRNAs. We sequenced the mt genomes of two species of Eriophyoidea: Phyllocoptes taishanensis and Epitrimerus sabinae. The mt genomes of P. taishanensis and E. sabinae are 13,475 bp and 13,531 bp, respectively, are circular and contain the 37 genes typical of animals; most mt tRNAs are highly truncated in both mites. On the other hand, these two eriophyoid mites have the least rearranged mt genomes seen in the Acariformes. Comparison between eriophyoid mites and other Aacariformes mites showed that: 1) the most recent common ancestor of Acariformes mites retained the ancestral pattern of mt gene arrangement of arthropods with slight modifications; 2) truncation of tRNAs for cysteine, phenylalanine and histidine occurred once in the most recent common ancestor of Acariformes mites whereas truncation of other tRNAs occurred multiple times; and 3) the placement of eriophyoid mites in the order Trombidiformes needs to be reviewed.

One new genus and four new species of the tribe Phyllocoptini (Acari: Eriophyidae) from China′s Hainan Island are described and illustrated. They are Xinglongarus racemoser gen. nov. and sp. nov. on Barringtonia racemosa (Linn.) Blume ex DC. (Lecythidaceae), Phyllocoptruta balansis sp. nov. on Bridelia balansae Tutcher. (Euphorbiaceae), Phyllocoptruta cochinchinensis sp. nov. on Cratoxylum cochinchinense (Lour.) Blume (Guttiferae) and Phyllocoptruta hungmaoensix sp. nov. on Phoebe hungmaoensis S. Lee (Lauraceae). All the new species described herein are vagrants on the respective host plant.

Three new species of the genus Diptilomiopus from China's Hainan Island are described and illustrated. They are Diptilomiopus cochinchinensus sp. nov. on Cratoxylum cochinchinense (Lour.) Blume (Guttiferae), Diptilomiopus cayratus sp. nov. on Cayratia japonica (Thunb.) Gagnep. (Vitaceae) and Diptilomiopus retusus sp. nov. on Fissistigma retusum (Levl.) Rehd. (Annonaceae). All the new species described herein are vagrants on the respective host plant.

The eriophyoid mite fauna (Acari: Eriophyoidea) of the Tibet Autonomous Region, southwestern China was studied and 32 species were reported herein, among which six species are new to science. The new species and their hosts are as follows: Boczekella larixis n. sp. on Larix sp. (Pinaceae); Acaphyllisa deutziasis n. sp. on Deutzia schneideriana Rehd. (Saxifragaceae); Acaphyllisa populusis n. sp. on Populus sp. (Salicaceae); Aculops cajanusis n. sp. on Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp. (Fabaceae); Aculops caraganis n. sp. on Caragana franchetiana Kom (Fabaceae); Tetra tibetisalix n. sp. on Salix heterochrom Seem. (Salicaceae). The purpose of this work was to investigate the varieties and distributions of eriophyoid mites in Tibet, summarize the species recorded in Tibet, and give references to mite taxonomists.

Eriophyoid mites (Acari: Eriophyoidea) in Phyllocoptruta are reviewed. Two new species of Phyllocoptruta from Shaanxi Province, China, are described and illustrated: Phyllocoptruta huayangiana n. sp. on Rosa sericea Lindl. subsp. omeiensisi (Rolfe) A. V. Roberts (Rosaceae) and Phyllocoptruta clematoclethra n. sp. on Clematoclethra sp. Maxim. (Actinidiaceae). The new species described herein are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves, causing no apparent injury.

This paper reviews the taxonomic research on the superfamily Eriophyoidea in China, with an updated checklist of 932 species belonging to 3 families, 10 subfamilies, 15 tribes and 187 genera, including a new name and a new combination: Cosella yangmingshanis nom. nov. and Aceria celtis (Huang, 2001) comb. nov., respectively. Hai-Yuan Kuang and his co-authors described 244 new species, Xiao-Yue Hong and his co-authors described 232 new species, Sui-Gai Wei and his co-authors described 122 new species, Jie-Liu Xin and his colleagues added 13 new species, Kun-Wei Huang and his colleagues described 229 new species from Taiwan, Tsan Huang, and his co-authors added 10 new species from Taiwan. Reports on the biology and control of the Eriophyoidea are relatively few in China, and these are briefly reviewed.

Two new species and one new record of eriophyoid mites from Hainan Province, China are described and illustrated. They are Hainanarus longusolanidion n. gen. & n. sp. on Antidesma montanum (Euphorbiaceae), Criotacus homalium n. sp. on Homalium ceylanicum (Flacourtiaceae), Diptilomiopus melastomae (Boczek and Chandrapatya, 2002), n. rec. on Melastoma malabathricum (Melastomaceae). All eriophyoid mite species described here are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves.

Three new species and one new record of the eriophyoid mites from Iran are described and illustrated. They are Aceria chenopodia n. sp. on Chenopodium album L. (Chenopodiaceae), Aceria mashhadiensis n. sp. on Polygonum arviculare L. (Polygonaceae), Tetra ferdowsiensis n. sp. on Ulmus minor Mill. (Ulmaceae), and Aceria fraxinivora (Nalepa, 1909) on Fraxinus excelsior (Oleaceae). All the new species described herein are vagrants on the host plant. A checklist of eriophyoid mites from Iran was provided.

Six new species of Aculus Keifer from China are described and illustrated. They are Aculus vignaus sp. nov. on Vigna vexillata (L.) Rich. (Fabaceae); Aculus jasmini sp. nov. on Jasminum humile L. (Oleaceae); Aculus sorbariae sp. nov. on Sorbaria sorbifolia (L.) A. Br. (Rosaceae); Aculus tibetsalicinus sp. nov. on Salix sp. (Salicaceae); Aculus lhasasorbariae sp. nov. on Sorbaria sp. (Rosaceae) and Aculus cheilophilanus sp. nov. on Salix cheilophila Schneid (Salicaceae). All the eriophyoid mite species described here are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves. A key to the Chinese Aculus species is also provided.

This paper provides a synopsis of 104 genera of eriophyoid mites in Southeast Asia, with an identification key to families and genera, and a checklist of 325 species. A new species—Paniculatus curcasis sp. nov. on Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae) from Java, Indonesia—was described. Four new combinations were proposed—Cosella crotoni (Boczek & Chandrapatya, 2000), comb. nov. on Croton oblongifolius (Euphorbiaceae) from Thailand; Paraphytoptus binarius (Keifer, 1977), comb. nov. on Peltophorum pterocarpum (Fabaceae) from Thailand; Leipothrix mangiferae (Chandrapatya, 1997), comb. nov. on Mangifera indica (Anacardiaceae) from Thailand; and Levonga caseariae (Chandrapatya, 1997) comb. nov. on Casearia grewiaefolia (Flacourtiaceae) from Thailand. Four new names were proposed for junior homonyms—Quadriporca samphran nom. nov. on Mangifera indica (Anacardiaceae) from Thailand; Knorella blumcanae nom. nov. on Bambusa blumcana (Poaceae) from Thailand; Rhombacus bangkoki nom. nov. on Eucalyptus sp. (Myrtaceae) from Thailand; and Tetra stipularisis nom. nov. on Bridelia stipularis (Euphorbiaceae) from Thailand.

In this paper, four new eriophyoid mite species in the genus Rhyncaphytoptus from China are described and illustrated. They are Rhyncaphytoptus tibetirosae sp. nov. on Rosa sp. (Rosaceae), Rhyncaphytoptus acutifoliae sp. nov. on Cotoneaster acutifolius Turcz. (Rosaceae), Rhyncaphytoptus tibetisalicise sp. nov. on Salix sp. (Salicaceae) and Rhyncaphytoptus buxifoliae sp. nov. on Cotoneaster buxifolius Lindl. (Rosaceae). All eriophyoid mites described herein are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves. A key to the species of Chinese Rhyncaphytoptus is provided.

All the eriophyoid mite species described here are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves.

Four new species of the Diptilomiopinae (Acari: Eriophyoidea: Diptilomiopidae) from China are described and illustrated. They are Diptilomiopus vitisis n. sp. on Vitis sp. (Vitaceae), Diptacus chizhouensis n. sp. on Rubus corchorifolius Linn. f. (Rosaceae), Diptacus platycaryae n. sp. on Platycarya strobilacea Sieb. et Zucc. (Juglandaceae) and Apodiptacus albae n. sp. on Swida alba Opiz (Cornaceae). Diptacus gigantorubra Xin and Dong on Rubus pentagonus Wall. ex Focke (Rosaceae) is re-described. All the eriophyoid mite species described in the paper are vagrants on the undersurface of leaves, causing no apparent damage to the host plant.

In this paper, five new species of Phyllocoptes from China are described and illustrated, namely Phyllocoptes cuihuashani n. sp. on Thalictrum sp. (Ranunculaceae), Phyllocoptes changbaiensis n. sp. on Crataegus maximowiczii (Rosaceae), Phyllocoptes mingyuiensis n. sp. on Cotoneaster sp. (Rosaceae), Phyllocoptes mollissimae n. sp. on Castanea mollissima (Fagaceae), Phyllocoptes taihuaiensis n. sp. on Armeniaca mume (Rosaceae). The eriophyoid mite species described herein are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves. A key to the species of Phyllocoptes from China is provided.

One new genus and five new species of the Rhyncaphytoptinae (Acari: Eriophyoidea: Diptilomiopidae) from China are described and illustrated. They are Brevulacus jilinensis sp. nov. on Quercus sp. (Fagaceae), Cuihuacarus longituberis gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Cotoneaster sp. (Rosaceae), Rhinophytoptus sericeaomeiensis sp. nov. on Rosa sericea spp. omeiensis (Rosaceae), Rhinotergum shaoguanense sp. nov. on Ulmus sp. (Ulmaceae) and Rhyncaphytoptus funali sp. nov. on Salix sp. (Salicaceae). All the eriophyoid mite species described here are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves.

A new genus, five new species, a new record and three new combinations are reported: Paraphetehaburus cephalotaxus n. gen. and n. sp. on Cephalotaxus fortunei Hook.f. (Cephalotaxaceae); Keiferella guanegouensis n. sp. on Picea asperata Mast.(Pinaceae); Proiectus tabulaeformis n. sp. on Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. (Pinaceae); Proiectus thunbergis n. sp. on Pinus thunbergii Pari. (Pinaceae); Phyllocoptruta platyclada n. sp. on Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (Cupressaceae); Platyphytoptus pineae Castagnoli, 1973, new record; Jutarus abietis (Kuang and Luo, 2005) n. comb.; Phyllocoptruta huangshanensis (Kuang, 1999)n. comb.; Phyllocoptes shenyangensis (Kuang and Luo, 2005) n. comb. All are vagrants on leaf surfaces; no apparent damage was found on host plants. A key and a tableto the Chinese species of eriophyoid mites on coniferous plants are provided.

Four new species in the genus Rhyncaphytoptus Keifer from China are described and illustrated, namely R . longyuwanis sp. nov. on Toxicodendron sp. (Anacardiaceae); R . tiliarium sp. nov. on Tilia sp. (Tiliaceae); R . guanegounis sp. nov. on Lonicera sp. (Caprifoliaceae); and R . yilisis sp. nov. on Betula platyphylla Suk. (Betulaceae). A new replacement name, Rhyncaphytoputs ulmiss is provided for the junior homonym R. ulmi (Lin & Kuang) on Ulmus sp. (Ulmaceae). All species described here are vagrant on the undersurface of host leaves. A key to the species of Rhyncaphytoptus in China is provided.

Seven new species of the genus Diptacus Keifer from northwestern China are described: Diptacus abelis sp. nov. on Abelia biflora Turcz. (Caprifoliaceae); Diptacus zhouzhisis sp. nov. on Carpinus sp. L. (Betulaceae); Diptacus maddenis sp. nov. on Maddenia hypoleuca Koehne (Rosaceae); Diptacus wenisis sp. nov. on Viburnum sp. L. (Caprifoliaceae); Diptacus serrulatis sp. nov. on Photinia serrulata Lindl. (Rosaceae); Diptacus mercuriasis sp. nov. on Mercurialis leiocarpa Sieb. et Zucc. (Euphorbiaceae) and Diptacus sorbusis sp. nov. on Sorbus sp. L. (Rosaceae). All species described here are vagrant on the undersurface of host leaves.

Three new species of eriophyoid mites from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, are described and illustrated. They are Paracolomerus gonglius sp. n. and Phyllocoptruta beggerianae sp. n. collected on Rosa beggeriana Schrenk ex Fisch. & C. A. Mey. (Rosaceae), and Rhyncaphytoptus fuyuniensis sp. n. collected on Cotoneaster ignavus E. L. Wolf (Rosaceae). All eriophyoid mites described here are vagrants on the undersurface of leaves and any apparent damage was not observed.

Three new species of eriophyid mites on bamboo from the Qinling Mountains, northwestern China, are described and illustrated: Tegolophus bashaniae sp. nov. on Bashania fargesii (E. G. Camus) Keng f. et Yi (Poaceae: Bambuseae); Tegolophus fargesiae sp. nov. on Fargesia qinlingensis Yi et J.X. Shao, and Tetraspinus vulgaris sp. nov. on Bambusa vulgaris Schrader ex Wendland. All species are vagrants on leaf surfaces, causing no apparent damage. A key to known eriophyid mites on bamboo from China is provided.

Two new species of eriophyid mites, Acalitus alnusae n. sp. from Alnus glutinosa (L.) Guertin. and A. subcordata (L.) C.A. Meyer (Betulaceae), and Aceria castaneifoliae n. sp. from Quercus castaneifolia C. A. Meyer (Fagaceae), are described from Iran. The new species are compared with related species and illustrated. Additionally, two new records of eriophyid mites from Iran are given. They are Aceria geranii (Canestrini) and Aceria pterocaryae Kuang and Gong.

Three new species of Phyllocoptes Nalepa (Acari: Eriophyoidea: Eriophyidae) are described from China, namely Phyllocoptes taishanensis, sp. nov., P. spiraeae, sp. nov., P. wutaishanensis, sp. nov. All type specimens are collected in northern China and deposited in the Department of Entomology, Nanjing Agricultural University, Jiangsu Province, China.

Four new species of Aculops (Acari: Eriophyoidea: Eriophyidae) are described, namely Aculops taihangemis, sp. nov., A. ulmi, sp. nov., A. sanguisorbae, sp. nov. and A. coryli, sp. nov. All type specimens are collected in northern China and deposited in the Department of Entomology, Nanjing Agricultural University, Jiangsu Province, China.

Nine new species of eriophyoid mites from the Hengduan Mountains, southwestern China are described and illustrated. They are Cosella delavayi sp. nov. on Castanopsis delavayi Franch. (Fagaceae); Tegonotus fabris sp. nov. on Abies fabri (Mast.) Craib (Pinaceae); Phyllocoptruta hodginsii sp. nov. on Fokienia hodginsii (Dunn) Henry et Thomas (Cupressaceae); Calvittacus mollissimus sp. nov. on Castanea mollissima (Fagaceae); Anthocoptes artemisia sp. nov. on Artemisia sp. (Asteraceae); Tetraspinus fabaceae sp. nov. on Cajanus cajan (L.) Mill sp. (Fabaceae); Neorhynacus molle sp. nov. on Rhododendron molle (Blume) G. Don (Ericaceae); Rhyncaphytoptus dielsianus sp. nov. on Trema dielsiana Hand.-Mzt (Ulmaceae) and Konola mollissima sp. nov. on Castanea mollissima (Fagaceae). All these new eriophyoid mite species are vagrants causing no apparent damage to their host plants.

In this paper, three new species of eriophyoid mites in the family Eriophyidae associated with Phoebe hunanensis Hand.–Mazz. (Lauraceae), namely Gammaphytoptus striatilobus sp. n., Phyllocoptes setalsolenidion sp. n., and Dechela phoebe sp. n. are described and illustrated. All are vagrants causing no apparent damage to the same host plants.

Three mite species of the family Eriophyidae from Iran are described and illustrated. They are: Tegolophus marrubiumer sp. nov. on Marrubium vulgare L. (Lamiaceae); Phyllocoptes sp. cf. balasi Farkas, 1962 on Sanguisorba minor Scop. subsp. minor (Rosaceae) and Aceria fasciculifolis sp. nov. on Astragalus fasciculifolius Boiss. (Fabaceae). Both new species described herein are vagrants on their respective host plants.

A new mite species belonging to the Eriophyidae (Acari: Eriophyoidea) from Shihezi, Xinjiang Uigur Autonomous Region, northwestern China, is described and illustrated. The new species, Aceria haloxylonis sp. nov. causes galls on its host plants, Haloxylon ammodendron (C.A.Mey.) Bunge and Haloxylon persicum Bunge ex Boiss. et Buhse (Chenopodiaceae).

Eriophyoid mites from Qinghai Province, northwestern China were studied herein. Up to now, only six species have been reported from Qinghai Province. In field surveys, 17 eriophyoid mite species were collected, among which nine species were found new to science. The new species and their host plants are listed as follows: Acaphyllisa tuberculumae sp. n. on Populus sp. (Salicaceae); Proiectus xiningensis sp. n. on Pinus sp. (Pinaceae); Phyllocoptes beishaniensis sp. n. on Spiraea mongolica Maxim. (Rosaceae); Tetra pruniana sp. n. on Prunus tomentosa Thunb. (Rosaceae) Rupr. (Berberidaceae); Tetra pyriana sp. n. on Pyrus calleryana Decne. (Rosaceae); Tetra simonia sp. n. on Populus simonii Carr. (Salicaceae); Diptacus berberinus sp. n. on Berberis amurensis Rupr. (Berberidaceae); Diptacus mengdaensis sp. n. on Lonicera elisae Franch. (Caprifoliaceae); Rhyncaphytoptus spinus sp. n. on Lonicera rupicola Hook. f. et Thoms. (Caprifoliaceae). Aculops ulmi Hong & Xue, 2005 was re-described.

Five new eriophyoid mite species from Zhejiang Province, China are described and illustrated: Diptacus coreanus sp. nov. from Litsea coreana H. Lev. (Lauraceae), Neorhynacus camphoratus sp. nov. from Cinnamomum camphora (L.) J. Presl (Lauraceae), Rhinotergum boehmerius sp. nov. from Boehmeria gracilis C.H. Wright (Urticaceae), Rhyncaphytoptus cathayensis sp. nov from Carya cathayensis Sarg. (Juglandaceae) and Rhyncaphytoptus lanceolatus sp. nov. from Cunnighamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook (Cupressaceae). All species were vagrant on their host plants with no visible damage observed.

Three new genera and three new species in the tribe Colomerini of the Eriophyidae (Acari: Eriophyoidea) from China’s Hainan Island are described and illustrated. They are Paraisoannulus machiles gen. nov. and sp. nov. on Machilus gamblei King ex Hook. f. (Lauraceae), Pentacecidophyes xinglongis gen. nov. and sp. nov. on Litchi chinensis Sonn. (Sapindaceae) and Paracaridilophus retusus gen. nov. and sp. nov. on Fissistigma retusum (Levl.) Rehd. (Annonaceae). All the new species described herein are vagrants on their respective host plant.

Three new eriophyoid mite species (Acari: Eriophyoidea: Eriophyidae) from China are described and illustrated. They are Cecidophyes truncatis sp. nov. on Acer truncatum Bunge (Aceraceae), Cecidophyes hirsutes sp. nov. on Cardamine hirsute L. (Cruciferae) and Paracolomerus fopingacer sp. nov. on Acer sp. L. (Aceraceae). All the new species described herein are vagrants on the host plant.

Nine eriophyoid mites, including two new species and five new records, from Iran are described and illustrated. They are Aceria acroptiloni Shevchenko & Kacalev, 1974, rec. n. on Rhaponticum repens (L.) Hidalgo (Asteraceae); Aceria anthocoptes (Nalepa, 1892), rec. n. on Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. (Asteraceae); Aceria lactucae (Canestrini, 1893), rec. n. on Lactuca virosa L. (Asteraceae); Aceria pulicaris sp. n. on Pulicaria gnaphalodes (Vent.) Boiss. (Asteraceae); Aceria tosichella Keifer, 1969 on Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv. (Poaceae); Eriophyes rotundae Mohanasundaram, 1983 on Cyperus rotundus L. (Cyperaceae); Aculops maroccensis Keifer, 1972, rec. n. on Mentha piperita L. (Lamiaceae); Aculus medicager sp. n. on Medicago sativa L. (Leguminosae); Tetra lycopersici Xue & Hong, 2005, rec. n. on Solanum nigrum L. (Solanaceae).

Five new species in the tribe Anthocoptini of the Eriophyidae (Acari: Eriophyoidea) from China are described and illustrated. They are Vittacus shaoguanicus sp. nov. on Carmona retusa (Vahl) Masam. (Boraginaceae), Vittacus cornusis sp. nov. on Cornus officinalis Sieb. et Zucc. (Cornaceae), Aculops buddlejaes sp. nov. on Buddleja lindleyana Fort. (Buddlejaceae ), Aculodes tsukushiensis sp. nov. on Elymus tsukushiensis Honda var. transiens (Hack.) Osad (Poaceae) and Tegolophus spathaceae sp. nov. on Fargesia spathacea Franch. (Poaceae, Bambuseae). All the new species described herein are vagrants on the respective host plant.

Up to now, 64 genera and 178 eriophyoid mite species are known to occur on the Fagaceae. We described and illustrated herein seven new genera and eleven new eriophyoid species associated with plants in the family Fagaceae, collected from eleven provinces in China. They are: Bariella spinishieldis sp. nov. on Quercus sp.; Calesalquia tiantangzhaica gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Quercus sp.; Acaphyllisa quinqueridges sp. nov. on Cyclobalanopsis glauca; Jiangsuacarus huaguoshanensis gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Quercus sp.; Spinacarus guniujiangensis gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Cyclobalanopsis glauca; Calvittacus chenius sp. nov. on Quercus chenii; Cereusacarus maopingensis gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Cyclobalanopsis glauca; Neovittacus shitaicus gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Quercus sp.; Paracaliphytoptus yangensis gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Cyclobalanopsis glauca; Shaanxicarus glaucaer gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Cyclobalanopsis glauca; and Rhyncaphytoptus qimenensis sp. nov. on Cyclobalanopsis glauca. An updated checklist and a key to the eriophyoid mite genera on the Fagaceae are provided. Three new combinations are given: Jiangsuacarus abietis (Kuang & Luo, 2005) comb. nov. on Abies fabri (Pinaceae); Jiangsuacarus dolichocladae (Song, Xue & Hong, 2008) comb. nov. on Bambusa dolichoclada (Poaceae); and Coptophylla querci (Chandrapatya & Boczek, 2000), comb. nov. on Quercus mespilifolioidea (Fagaceae).

In this paper, eight new species of the genus Aculus Keifer from China are described and illustrated, namely Aculus amurens sp. nov. on Tilia amurensis Rupr. (Tiliaceae); Aculus asteri sp. nov. on Aster tataricus L. f. (Compositae); Aculus changbais sp. nov. on Salix gracilistyla Miq. (Salicaceae); Aculus cuihuae sp. nov. on Ribes sp. (Saxifragaceae); Aculus eupteleae sp. nov. on Euptelea pleiospermum Hook. f. et Thoms. (Trochodendraceae); Aculus rumexis sp. nov. on Rumex acetosa L. (Polygonaceae); Aculus jingbois sp. nov. on Prunus tomentosa Thunb. (Rosaceae); Aculus toxicodendri sp. nov. on Toxicodendron sp. (Anacardiaceae). A key to the Chinese Aculus species is provided. The eriophyoid mite species described here are vagrants on the undersurface of host leaves.

One new genus and four new species of the Phyllocoptinae from Fujian Province, southeastern China are described and illustrated. They are Fujianacarus gen. nov. and Fujianacarus wisterianis sp. nov. on Wisteria sinensis (Sims) Sweet (Fabaceae); Epitrimerus buxsinica sp. nov. on Buxus sinica (Rehd. et Wils.) Cheng (Buxaceae); Shevtchenkella camelliae sp. nov. on Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Ktze. (Theaceae) and Jutarus dolichocladae sp. nov. on Bambusa dolichoclada Hayata (Poaceae). All species are vagrant on the undersurface of leaves, causing no apparent damage to the host plant.

The New Zealand fauna of Eriophyoidea (Acari: Prostigmata) is updated with a checklist. One new genus, six new species, three new combinations, one new record and some new distribution records of eriophyoid mites from New Zealand are described and illustrated, namely Disella rebeeveri sp. nov. on Kunzea ericoides (Myrtaceae); Cecidophyopsis hendersoni (Keifer, 1954), rec. nov. on Yucca glauca and Y. elephantipes (Agavaceae); Nameriophyes sapidae gen. nov. & sp. nov. on Rhopalostylis sapida (Palmae); Eriophyes bennetti sp. nov. on Fuchsia excorticata (Onagraceae); Eriophyes georgeae sp. nov. on Brachyglottis elaeagnifolia (Asteraceae); Aceria flynni sp. nov. on Kunzea ericoides (Myrtaceae); Aculops propinquae (Manson, 1984), comb. nov. on Coprosma propinqua (Rubiaceae); Aculus corynocarpi (Manson, 1984), comb. nov. on Corynocarpus laevigatus (Corynocarpaceae); Aculus heatherae (Manson, 1984), comb. nov. on Raukaua simplex (Araliaceae), Leptospermum scoparium (Myrtaceae) and Syzygium maire (Myrtaceae); Aculus lalithi sp. nov. on Melicope ternate (Rutaceae).
