"This three-article dissertation explores the geography of non-farm proprietorship (NFP) employment by U.S. County in 2016. NFP employment continues to be an important and emerging research area in the field of entrepreneurship. All three articles used data collected from the U.S. Census and Bureau of Economic Analysis and focused on identifying the key predictors that best explained why certain counties generated high shares of NFP employment. A stepwise regression analysis was conducted at three forms of county typologies; the 800 most populated counties in the U.S., 107 micropolitan counties, and 71 outlying metropolitan counties. All three articles supported the idea that the geography of entrepreneurship is unevenly distributed by county. In each regression analysis, it appeared that the employment composition of the local labor pool played a more powerful role in shaping the geography of NFP than more aggregate socio-economic metrics like per capita income, level of education or median household income. Key predictors included the share of the labor pool employed in real estate, rental and leasing (RRL) employment and construction employment which featured prominently in the final regression models in all three articles. RRL and construction employment may be a proxy for access to a particular type of capital for NFP workers that is tied to vibrant, growing land markets. The findings provide a disaggregated analysis at different county typologies that can help policymakers to better understand the key predictors that drive the local choices of entrepreneurs and help communities build more competitive local economies."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

The gross federal debt now tops $18 trillion, but the outlook appears to be improving as the economy continues to rebound from the Great Recession. In 2014, the nation experienced its fastest economic growth in over ten years, the stock market doubled, the health care inflation rate was at its lowest rate in 50 years, and the deficit had been cut by two-thirds. But much debate remains before the actual debt improves. This paper aims to inform that debate by providing a general description about government debt, reviewing our nation's history and projections of debt, and describing the impact of debt on national security. Finally, it offers broad recommendations based on this context.

The United States and Russia currently face political problems that undermine areas of trade and economics of both respective countries despite market forces. This analysis first gives an overview of key events in history to establish a basis of understanding of the foundation of U.S.-Russo political and economic relations. Secondly, an evaluation of the current issues that have pitted Russia and America against one another will shed light on the barriers of further development. Finally, utilizing both the past and present economic impacts forecasts three possible outcomes for U.S.-Russo political relations and the economic impacts that follow as a result.

"Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) occupations are critical to our continued economic competitiveness because of their direct ties to innovation, economic productivity, even though they will only be 5 percent of all jobs in the U.S. economy by 2018. The disproportionate influence of STEM raises a persistent concern that we are not producing enough STEM workers to compete successfully in the global economy. This study examines the economic indicator known as business climate in relation to the state level rates of child poverty. A theoretical framework is constructed which presents arguments that are opposed to and in favor of a robust business climate. Those in favor would contend that business climate is not associated with the variation in child poverty, whereas those opposed would claim that it has a negative association with the economic well-being of children. This research is cross-sectional (year 2000) and relies upon variables at the state level. Bivariate analysis indicates that there is a significant positive correlation between business climate and child poverty. However, when other factors are taken into account, such as family structure and geographic location, this relationship disappears. Therefore, the study concludes that there is not a negative association between promoting the business climate of a state and the economic well-being of children.

Factors discussed include national population shifts, per capita income, median family income and personal taxes.
