In this paper, we identify patterns of subject and qualification choices made at age 14. Much of the previous research on 'subject choice' has focussed on the later stages of educational trajectories, particularly Higher Education. However, the choices made at early branching points can limit pupils' subsequent options, potentially contributing to educational inequalities. This paper identifies the patterns of General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) subjects chosen by a cohort of young people born in 1989/1990. We make use of the Next Steps data (formerly the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (LSYPE)) which is linked to the National Pupil Database. We develop an approach to measuring the academic selectivity of subjects and qualifications. We examine the roles of social class, parental education, income, gender and ethnicity in determining participation in these curriculum groupings. Using measures of prior attainment from age thirteen, we address the question of whether curriculum differentials simply reflect differences in prior attainment or whether they actually operate above and beyond existing inequalities. We find clear socio-economic, gender, ethnic and school-level differences in subjects studied which cannot be accounted for by prior attainment.

This paper considers whether subject choice at 14-16 influences post-16 transitions, taking into account prior academic attainment and school characteristics, and if so, whether this accounts for socioeconomic, gender, and ethnic differences in access to post-16 education. We consider post-16 progression to full-time education, A-levels, and studying two or more facilitating subjects at A-level. We use "Next Steps", a study of 16,000 people born in England in 1989-1990, linked to administrative education records (the National Pupil Database). We find that students pursuing an EBacc-eligible curriculum at 14-16 had a greater probability of progression to all post-16 educational outcomes, while the reverse was true for students taking an applied GCSE subject. Curriculum differences did not explain the social class differences in post-16 progression, but an academic curriculum was equally valuable for working-class as for middle-class pupils. Pursuing an EBacc-eligible curriculum particularly strongly increased the chances of girls and white young people staying in the educational pipeline, whereas applied subjects were particularly detrimental for girls. An EBacc-eligible curriculum at age 14-16 increased the chances of studying subjects preferred by Russell Group universities at A-level.

This paper examines the relationship between parents' and children's language skills for a nationally representative birth cohort born in the United Kingdom--the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS). We investigate both socioeconomic and ethnic differentials in children's vocabulary scores and the role of differences in parents' vocabulary scores in accounting for these. We find large vocabulary gaps between highly educated and less educated parents, and between ethnic groups. Nevertheless, socioeconomic and ethnic gaps in vocabulary scores are far wider among the parents than among their children. Parental vocabulary is a powerful mediator of inequalities in offspring's vocabulary scores at age 14, and also a powerful driver of change in language skills between the ages of five and 14. Once we account for parental vocabulary, no ethnic minority group of young people has a negative "vocabulary gap" compared to whites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Typologies of symptom development have been used to identify individuals with different symptom development in the externalizing and internalizing domains of child psychopathology separately despite the domains' high comorbidity and shared common etiologic risk. This study identified typologies of development jointly across the 2 symptom domains in childhood and investigated their associated antecedents with a specific focus on the comparisons between overall severity of symptoms and symptom expression in one or the other domain.Method: Latent class analysis identified groups based on emotional and behavioral symptoms assessed at 3, 5, 7, and 11 years in the UK Millennium Cohort Study (N = 15,439). Different sociodemographic, family structure and environment, birth, infancy, and early childhood antecedents were examined.Results: Five groups were identified: 1. low symptoms (57%), 2. moderate behavioral (21%), 3. moderate emotional (12.5%), 4. high emotional and moderate behavioral (5.5%), and 5. high behavioral and moderate emotional (4%). Higher symptoms were predicted by larger numbers of antecedents and risk factors compared with the low symptom group and compared with moderate and high levels of symptoms in either domain (groups 5 versus 2 and 4 versus 3). Comparisons of groups with similar overall symptom levels but different dominant symptom domain (groups 2 versus 3 and 4 versus 5) indicated that apart from gender and ethnicity, there were few unique antecedents of whether children mainly internalize or externalize their symptoms.Conclusion: It is possible and useful to define groupings or typologies jointly across externalizing and internalizing symptom development in childhood. Although numerous antecedents predict the experience of symptoms, there are few unique antecedents that differentiate individuals with similarly high levels of psychopathology expressed mainly as internalizing or externalizing symptoms. Identification of at-risk children and delivery of early intervention might benefit from a decreased focus on symptom domain with possible downstream effects through the life course for most common psychiatric disorders.
