Quantitatively evaluation of satellite precipitation and potential evapotranspiration products with the high resolution, wide coverage and dynamic continuity is an important foundation for drought monitoring over mainland China. This paper examined the accuracy of products and the utility of drought monitoring using the newly released long-term (more than 30 years) satellite precipitation products (climate hazards group infrared precipitation with station, CHIRPS) data version 2.0 and potential evapotranspiration products (global land-surface evaporation: the Amsterdam methodology, GLEAM) dataset. We selected standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) and six statistical and classification measures indexes to evaluate accuracy and the utility of CHIRPS and GLEAM-Ep (potential evapotranspiration derived from GLEAM), with China Gauge-based Precipitation Daily Analysis dataset (CGDPA) and potential evapotranspiration calculated by Penman-Monteith (PM-Ep) as evaluation reference data sets. The results showed that CHIRPS and GLEAM-Ep performed well in eastern and southwest of China. However, their performance in western China was uncertain due to the sparsity of meteorological stations. SPEIs (SPEI value calculated by the CHIRPS and GLEAM-Ep) had a good performance on drought monitoring in eastern and southwestern China. Values of correlation coefficient (CC) between SPEIs and SPEIm (SPEI value calculated by the CGDPA and PM-Ep) were more than 0.6 in southeastern China, southwestern China, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River region and northern China, especially in relatively humid areas, which the correlation coefficient values were more than 0.7 and the root mean-squared error (RMSE) values were less than 0.8. In order to further evaluate the performance of SPEIs in drought monitoring at spatial and temporal scales, the SPEIs3 (SPEIs at three-month scale) and SPEIm3 (SPEIm at three-month scale) in southeastern China, southwestern China, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River region and northern China were compared. SPEIs3 had a better simulation effect on the evolution process of the ratio of drought area in those regions during1981-2016. And the success ratio of simulating drought duration was about 0.93, 0.57, 0.71 and 0.81, respectively. Moreover, SPEIs3 displayed a high accuracy over the four regions in capturing drought, which was the spatial distribution of typical drought events on specific month. In conclusion, SPEI based on long-term CHIRPS and GLEAM-Ep could be applied to monitor and evaluate drought in eastern and southwestern China. Water surface evaporation is an important process in the hydrologic and energy cycles. Accurate simulation of water evaporation is important for the evaluation of water resources. In this paper, using meteorological data from the Aixinzhuang reservoir, the main factors affecting water surface evaporation were determined by the principal component analysis method. To illustrate the influence of these factors on water surface evaporation, the paper first adopted the Dalton model to simulate water surface evaporation. The results showed that the simulation precision was poor for the peak value zone. To improve the model simulation’s precision, a modified Dalton model considering relative humidity was proposed. The results show that the 10-day average relative error is 17.2%, assessed as qualified; the monthly average relative error is 12.5%, assessed as qualified; and the yearly average relative error is 3.4%, assessed as excellent. To validate its applicability, the meteorological data of Kuancheng station in the Luan River basin were selected to test the modified model. The results show that the 10-day average relative error is 15.4%, assessed as qualified; the monthly average relative error is 13.3%, assessed as qualified; and the yearly average relative error is 6.0%, assessed as good. These results showed that the modified model had good applicability and versatility. Eddy covariance data are widely used for the investigation of surface-air interactions. Although numerical datasets exist in public depositories for upland ecosystems, few research groups have released eddy covariance data collected over lakes. In this paper, we describe a dataset from the Lake Taihu Eddy Flux Network, a network consisting of seven lake sites and one land site. Lake Taihu is the third largest freshwater lake (area 2,400 km2) in China, under the influence of subtropical climate. The dataset spans the period from June 2010 to December 2018. Data variables are recorded at half-hourly intervals and include micrometeorology (air temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, rainfall, and water/soil temperature profile), the four components of surface radiation balance, friction velocity, and sensible and latent heat fluxes. Except for rainfall and wind direction, all other variables are gap-filled, with each datapoint marked by a quality flag. Several areas of research can potentially benefit from the publication of this dataset, including evaluation of mesoscale weather forecast models, development of lake-air flux parameterizations, investigation of climatic controls on lake evaporation, validation of remote sensing surface data products, and global synthesis on lake-air interactions. A lasting decrease in the near-surface wind speed (SWS) in China has been revealed, but a following short-term strengthening in the SWS was rarely noted. In this paper, the daily mean SWS observed datasets from 328 measurement stations in Eastern China during the period 1981–2011 were used to investigate the facts and causes of the observed short-term strengthening in winter SWS in recent decades. The major results are summarized as follows: the SWS showed a significant decrease in the last 30 years, but a short-term strengthening in SWS was observed during the winter since 2000 in Eastern China. The SWS in Eastern China showed a significant decrease of − 0.11 m s−1 decade−1 from 1981 to 1999, followed by a weak increase of 0.0008 m s−1 decade−1 from 2000 to 2011. The short-term strengthening in the SWS since 2000 was mainly induced by the changes of the pressure-gradient force (PGF), which could be attributed to the changes of the sea-level pressure (SLP) in the region (51°–69.75° N, 51.75°–111.75° E). Furthermore, the changes of the PGF during the two periods of 1981–1999 and 2000–2011 were consistent with those of the SLP in the region (51°–69.75° N, 51.75°–111.75° E). The correlation coefficient between PGF and SLP was 0.32 and 0.66 during the period 1981–1999 and 2000–2011, respectively. To effectively meet growing food demands, the global agronomic community will require a better understanding of factors that are currently limiting crop yields and where production can be viably expanded with minimal environmental consequences. Remote sensing can inform these analyses, providing valuable spatiotemporal information about yield-limiting moisture conditions and crop response under current climate conditions. In this paper we study correlations for the period 2003–2013 between yield estimates for major crops grown in Brazil and the Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) – an indicator of agricultural drought that describes anomalies in the actual/reference evapotranspiration (ET) ratio, retrieved using remotely sensed inputs of land surface temperature (LST) and leaf area index (LAI). The strength and timing of peak ESI-yield correlations are compared with results using remotely sensed anomalies in water supply (rainfall from the Tropical Rainfall Mapping Mission; TRMM) and biomass accumulation (LAI from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer; MODIS). Correlation patterns were generally similar between all indices, both spatially and temporally, with the strongest correlations found in the south and northeast where severe flash droughts have occurred over the past decade, and where yield variability was the highest. Peak correlations tended to occur during sensitive crop growth stages. At the state scale, the ESI provided higher yield correlations for most crops and regions in comparison with TRMM and LAI anomalies. Using finer scale yield estimates reported at the municipality level, ESI correlations with soybean yields peaked higher and earlier by 10 to 25 days in comparison to TRMM and LAI, respectively. In most states, TRMM peak correlations were marginally higher on average with municipality-level annual corn yield estimates, although these estimates do not distinguish between primary and late season harvests. A notable exception occurred in the northeastern state of Bahia, where the ESI better captured effects of rapid cycling of moisture conditions on corn yields during a series of flash drought events. The results demonstrate that for monitoring agricultural drought in Brazil, value is added by combining LAI with LST indicators within a physically based model of crop water use. Potash deposits commonly accumulate in highly restricted settings at the final stage of brine evaporation. This does not mean that potash deposits are formed simply as a result of the evaporation concentration of seawater or lake water, but rather as a coupling result of particular provenance, tectonics and climate activities. In this paper, we focus on the formative mechanism of the potash deposits of Lop Nur depression in Tarim Basin to interpret the detailed coupling mechanism among provenance, tectonics and climate. In terms of the provenance of Lop Nur Lake, the water of the Tarim River which displays 'potassium-rich' characteristics play an important role. In addition, the Pliocene and Lower-Middle Pleistocene clastic beds surrounding Lop Nur Lake host a certain amount of soluble potassium and thus serves as 'source beds' for potash formation. During the late Pliocene, the Lop Nur region has declined and evolved into a great lake from the previous piedmont and diluvial fan area. Since the mid Pleistocene, the great-united Lop Nur Lake has been separated and has generated a chain system consisting of Taitema Lake, Big Ear Lake and Luobei Lake which has turned into the deepest sag in Lop Nur Lake. Dry climate in Lop Nur region has increased since the Pliocene, and became extreme at the late Pleistocene. The study implies that potash formation in Lop Nur Lake depends on the optimal combination of extreme components of provenance, tectonics and climate during a shorter-term period. The optimal patterns of three factors are generally characterized by the long-term accumulation and preliminary enrichment of potassium, the occurrence of the deepest sub-depression and the appearance of an extremely arid climate in Lop Nur region. These factors have been interacting synergistically since the forming of the saline lake and in the later stages strong 'vapor extraction' caused by extremely arid climate is needed to trigger large scale mineralization of potash deposits. ABSTRACT In this paper, we present the response of actual evaporation to global warming in China based on the National Centers for Environmental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research ( NCEP/ NCAR) reanalysis 1, the NCEP-Department of Energy ( NCEP/ DOE) reanalysis 2, 40-year ECMWF Re-Analysis ( ERA-40), ECMWF-Interim Re-Analysis ( ERA-Interim), Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications ( MERRA), and Climate Forecast System Reanalysis ( CFSR). Rotated empirical orthogonal function ( REOF) analysis was applied to reveal the coherent pattern of the change in reanalysis evaporation ( RE). According to the first four REOF modes in NCEP/ NCAR, we subdivided China into six climatic regions, and found that RE increased significantly in central and southeast of China from 1979 to 2012, especially during the sub-period of 1985-2004. Various estimates of linear trend are statistically consistent, and most of them are significant at the 95% confidence level. Conversely, RE decreased in northern and northeast although the magnitude of decreasing trends is inconsistently among the reanalysis. Moreover, there is a general tendency of RE to increase in northwest, but mostly RE trends are not significant. In the dry northwest and northern regions, rainfall is an important factor affecting the changing of RE, while RE is less sensitive to the change of temperature. However, RE rates are dominated by temperature in the humid central and southeast regions. These results support the view that the sensitivity of RE to global warming largely depends on the environment. In view of data availability, despite the general similarity, differences exist among the various reanalysis, especially in NCEP/ NCAR and CFSR. In summary, it can be concluded that the quality of RE values is higher in central and southeast, while even greater uncertainties lie in the estimates of RE in northwest China and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Gravity desalination is an important method for obtaining fresh water from sea ice; however, the large amount of ice that is exposed to air for long periods of time sublimates and evaporates, which results in a reduction of the freshwater resource. This paper describes a study of sea ice sublimation and evaporation performed during the winter of 2013 at the western shore of Bohai Bay, China, to determine the relationship between the amount of sublimation and evaporation and the atmospheric parameters. Substantial amounts of the Bohai sea ice sublimated and evaporated, ranging from 15 to 35 % of the total. The sublimation and evaporation amount was significantly different between the day and night and was greater in the daytime because of the relative humidity difference. Sublimation and evaporation is primarily affected by atmospheric parameters, and the amount of sublimation and evaporation exhibits a good linear relationship with the relative humidity and the wind speed; a comprehensive parameters formula was determined for the Bohai Rim in China. A 10 % increase of daily relative humidity will reduce approximately 1.5 kg/m/day of the sublimation and evaporation, and the amount of sublimation and evaporation increases by 1.76 kg/m/day when the daily wind speed increases by 1 m/s. To reduce the sublimation and evaporation and maximize the amount of this freshwater resource, gravity desalination sites should be selected where the wind speed is low and the relative humidity is high, i.e., the sea ice should be configured to reduce the adverse effects of sunlight, low humidity, and air turbulence. Land surface evaporation is an important component of the earth's surface hydrological cycle, as well as in the atmospheric energy and water balances. In China, different instruments have been used over time to measure evaporation. A small pan with 20-cm diameter was used at most meteorological stations from 1951 to 2002. After 1998, large pans with areas of 3000 cm2 each were adopted at most stations. Collocated small- and large-pan observations of evaporation have been made at major stations from 1998 to 2002. This makes developing a homogenous time series of evaporation measurements difficult. This paper describes how surface evaporation data collected in the past are merged with more recent data collected by automated weather stations. A statistical model was set up on the basis of collocated small- and large-pan observations of evaporation, using a second-generation statistical regression technique [partial least squares (PLS)]. The model succeeds in generating daily large-pan evaporation estimates from small-pan evaporation data and selected meteorological parameters. Interpolation is used to replace missing data. The reconstructed large-pan evaporation dataset covers 751 weather stations across China from 1951 to 2005. Cross-validation tests show that the relative error of the daily estimated evaporation derived from the PLS regression model is 19% with a monthly mean error rate approaching 0 mm. The recycling of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste) in developing countries has attracted much attention as a significant source of brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Gaseous and particle-bound BFRs were measured in the atmosphere at e-waste and rural sites in southern China during 2007-2008. The annual average concentrations in the air were 3260 ± 3370 and 219 ± 192 pg/m³ for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and were 546 ± 547 and 165 ± 144 pg/m³ for non-PBDE BFRs at the e-waste and rural sites, respectively. PBDEs had unusually high relative concentrations of di- and tribrominated congeners at the e-waste site. The Clausius—Clapeyron (CC) plots showed that the gaseous concentrations of less brominated BFRs (di- through hexa-BFRs) were strongly controlled by temperature-driven evaporation from contaminated surfaces (e.g., e-waste, soils, and recycled e-waste remains) except for winter. However, weak temperature dependence at the rural site suggests that regional or long-range atmospheric transport was largely responsible for the air concentrations. Gas-particle partitioning (KP) of PBDEs correlated well with the subcooled liquid vapor pressure (PL°) for most sampling events. The varied slopes of log KP versus log PL° plots for the e-waste site (-0.59 to -1.29) indicated an influence of ambient temperature and atmospheric particle properties on the partitioning behavior of BFRs. The flat slopes (-0.23 to -0.80) for the rural site implied an absorption-dominant partitioning. This paper suggests that e-waste recycling in Asian low-latitude regions is a significant source of less brominated BFRs and has important implications for their global transport from warm to colder climates. Abstract: As a major component of the water budget of a wetland, evaporation has proven difficult to measure evapotranspiration accurately. This paper developed a scheme to assess actual evapotranspiration (ETa) across a range of land uses in Nansi Lake Wetland, China, using a remote sensing technique and the Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) model. The estimation of pixel-scaled ETa was conducted via SEBAL using Landsat-7 ETM+ images, DEM and meteorological data. Compared with the recorded pan evaporation, the estimated evapotranspiration calculated by SEBAL agreed well with the results derived from pan observations. Then, the spatial distribution characteristic of daily evapotranspiration was analyzed by referencing the land-use map of 2000. It was found that the open water body and creed swamp were at a high evapotranspiration rate, while the crop land, grassland and rural residential land took the second place, and the overflow land, town constructed land and bare soil were at the lowest evapotranspiration rate, which accorded with the evapotranspiration theory. The research demonstrates the considerable potential of SEBAL model for estimation of spatial ETa with little ground-based weather data over large areas such as wetlands. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary: Oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes (δ 18O and δD) in precipitation collected in every event from 2007 to 2009 in Guangzhou, South China, are presented in this paper. The total correlation between δ 18O and δD is obtained as δD =(8.46±0.13) δ 18O+(15.0±0.9). More negative δ 18O and δD generally occur during summer and autumn, while less negative or even positive δ 18O and δD occur during winter and spring. Significant negative correlations between precipitation δ 18O and temperature, and between precipitation δ 18O and precipitation amount are observed. Regression line changes from year to year are likely due to changes in moisture sources for the precipitation. The moisture contributed by adjacent seas or local evaporation account for the main precipitation during winter and early spring, while summer monsoon brings huge amounts of moisture from remote seas associated with higher temperature and larger precipitation amounts. Seasonal variations of the precipitation D-excess provide more details for changes in moisture sources. Higher D-excess values during winter and early spring are estimated to correspond to a lesser proportion of remote moisture, while lower D-excess values during summer and autumn correspond to larger remote moisture transported by summer monsoons. This generally agrees with the results of model analysis on single isobaric backward trajectories for air parcels during specific time periods. Results of this study imply that precipitation δ 18O and δD, as well as some related paleoclimate proxies such as δ 18O in speleothem and tree ring, and δD in plant-derived organic compounds and tree ring, currently cannot indicate changes in temperature or precipitation amount separately, but should be comprehensive proxies for monsoon climate. Spatial distribution of reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is essential in water resources planning and management, especially in semi-arid areas. In this paper, a digital elevation model is used in an `interpolate-then-calculate' approach to calculating the spatially distributed ET0 using the physically based Penman-Monteith equation in the Taoer river basin in China. The results show the following. (1) Of 11 interpolation methods, the Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) method was found to be best for interpolating wind speed and a tn-variate secondary trend surface method was found most suitable for interpolating mean air temperature and relative humidity. Spatial modelling of the radiation environment considered the effects of elevation, slope and aspect. (2) Monthly values in January for the three meteorological variables showed larger spatial variations than in July, and just the reverse of net surface radiation. (3) The resulting ET0 calculated at each grid cell with 200m resolution and its spatial variation showed strong seasonal variation. Lower ET0 was found in high-elevation southern Great Xingan mountains in the northwest basin, while higher values were located in the plains adjacent to the lower reach. Abstract: The nonparametric Mann–Kendall test was used to detect the trends of major hydroclimatic variables in the Tarim River Basin, the largest inland river basin in China for the period of 1960–2007. Results showed that both mean annual air temperature and precipitation experienced an increasing trend, while annual streamflow demonstrated a mixed trend of decreasing and increasing: The mountainous region upstream showed an increasing trend and the region downstream exhibited a decreasing trend. Impacts of the increased air temperature on streamflow have shown different characteristics depending on location and seasons: it has positive effect on the runoff at mountainous region due to snowmelt and glacier-melt in spring, but negative effect on the runoff at plain area due to the increase of actual evaporation in summer. In addition, human activity contributed to the declining of streamflow in the arid plain oases at downstream of the Tarim River Basin. The results obtained in this paper can be used as a reference for the planning and management of water resources to maintain the health of the river system. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary: Alpine meadows in the upper catchments of the Yangtze River, China provide critical amounts of water to maintain regional water resources, but little is known about the hydrological processes in these alpine ecosystems. In this paper, we analyzed the sources of precipitation in an alpine meadow using the deuterium excess in rain, fog, soil water, shallow groundwater and stream water. Rain and fog in the alpine meadow had high deuterium excess, 35‰ and 38‰ compared to 10‰ of precipitation brought by monsoon at lower elevation. These high values suggested that a large part of rain at the alpine meadow derived from secondarily evaporated water and that fog derived from the evaporated water produced shortly after rain events. However, averaged evaporation rate calculated by an isotopic mass balance model of soil water was only 0.26mm/d, about 3.6% of the rainfall and 7.57‰ of the average deuterium excess value of rain. The contribution from evaporated water to precipitation in the alpine meadow therefore had to be mainly from sub-alpine vegetations in the region. This eco-hydrological relation between sub-alpine and alpine ecosystems can partly explain the high water yield of the alpine meadow and should be considered for regional resource management. Information on evapotranspiration (ET) can help us understand water balance, particularly in forested watersheds. Previous studies in China show that ET was relatively low (30-40% of total precipitation) in the Minjiang Valley located in the upper reach of the Yangtze River Basin. However, this conclusion was derived from research on small-scale watersheds (<100 km2). The objective of this paper was to present ET information on meso-scale watersheds in the Minjiang Valley. Four meso-scale watersheds (1,700-5,600 km2) located in the Minjiang Valley were used to estimate ET using the water balance approach. We first generated forest vegetation variables (coniferous forest percentage, forest cover percentage, and derived forest vegetation index) using remote sensing data. Landsat 5 TM satellite images, acquired on June 26, 1994, were selected for the vegetation classification. Actual annual ET was calculated based on 11-year estimated precipitation and measured streamflow data (1992-2002). We also calculated potential ET (PET) using an improved Thornthwaite model for all four watersheds for the period of 1992-1998. PET can provide additional information about potential capacity of water flux to atmosphere in the region. Seasonal (dry and rainy) PET and ET for all studied watersheds were also estimated for comparison purposes as the water balance approach, at shorter than annual scales, would likely provide inaccurate estimates of ET. The dominant vegetations in the Minjiang Valley were grasslands, conifer forests, and shrub-lands. Our results confirmed that both ET and PET for three studied meso-scale watersheds in the Minjiang Valley is relatively low (39.5-43.8 and 28.2-47.7% for ET and PET, respectively), with an exception of ET in the Yuzixi watershed being 71.1%. This result is generally consistent with previous research at small watershed scales. Natural forests in southern China have been severely logged due to high human demand for timber, food, and fuels during the past century, but are recovering in the past decade. The objective of this study was to investigate how vegetation cover changes in composition and structure affected the water budgets of a 9.6-km2 Dakeng watershed located in a humid subtropical mountainous region in southern China. We analyzed 27 years (i.e., 1967-1993) of streamflow and climate data and associated vegetation cover change in the watershed. Land use/land cover census and Normalized Difference of Vegetation Index (NDVI) data derived from remote sensing were used to construct historic land cover change patterns. We found that over the period of record, annual streamflow ( Q) and runoff/precipitation ratio did not change significantly, nor did the climatic variables, including air temperature, Hamon’s potential evapotranspiration (ET), pan evaporation, sunshine hours, and radiation. However, annual ET estimated as the differences between P and Q showed a statistically significant increasing trend. Overall, the NDVI of the watershed had a significant increasing trend in the peak spring growing season. This study concluded that watershed ecosystem ET increased as the vegetation cover shifted from low stock forests to shrub and grasslands that had higher ET rates. A conceptual model was developed for the study watershed to describe the vegetation cover-streamflow relationships during a 50-year time frame. This paper highlighted the importance of eco-physiologically based studies in understanding transitory, nonstationary effects of deforestation or forestation on watershed water balances. This paper attempts to provide some new understanding of the mechanical as well as thermal effects of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) on the circulation and climate in Asia through diagnosis and numerical experiments. The air column over the TP descends in winter and ascends in summer and regulates the surface Asian monsoon flow. Sensible heating on the sloping lateral surfaces appears from the authors’ experiments to be the major driving source. The retarding and deflecting effects of the TP in winter generate an asymmetric dipole zonal-deviation circulation, with a large anticyclone gyre to the north and a cyclonic gyre to the south. Such a dipole deviation circulation enhances the cold outbreaks from the north over East Asia, results in a dry climate in south Asia and a moist climate over the Indochina peninsula and south China, and forms the persistent rainfall in early spring (PRES) in south China. In summer the TP heating generates a cyclonic spiral zonal-deviation circulation in the lower troposphere, which converges toward and rises over the TP. It is shown that because the TP is located east of the Eurasian continent, in summertime the meridional winds and vertical motions forced by the Eurasian continental-scale heating and the TP local heating are in phase over the eastern and central parts of the continent. This paper describes a transition of rainfall characteristics related to the moistening of the land surface over the central Tibetan Plateau. This transition was observed three weeks after the onset of the summer rainy season of 1998. The objective is to clarify the potential of the plateau surface to modify the characteristics of monsoon rainfall. Summer rain events were first separated according to large-scale conditions into three types: one with a near-surface heat low and a Tibetan upper high, one with a near-surface low associated with a midlatitude trough, and one without a near-surface low. The first type was studied in further detail because of its intraseasonal variability in the rainfall amount (from 2.8 mm day-1 in June to 5.7 mm day-1 in August). The smaller amounts of the diurnal rain in June than July are related to the evaporation of precipitation within a drier and deeper subcloud layer. The moistening of this layer was related to the increase in the soil moisture and activation of vegetation. These results suggest a significant impact of the plateau surface upon the modification of the rainfall characteristics. This paper describes the general moisture conditions and the annual and seasonal trends of temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration and aridity/humidity index from 1971 to 2000 in China. Observed climatic data from 616 meteorological stations over China's land surface were used. Potential evapotranspiration was calculated by the Penman-Monteith model with a modified net radiation part to accommodate China's unique climatic conditions. According to the aridity/humidity index, a ratio of potential evapotranspiration to precipitation, four moisture regional types were delineated gradually from the southeast to the northwest, i.e. humid, subhumid, semiarid and arid throughout China. Linear regression was performed on the 30-year time series of the four climate factors in order to detect possible trends. The results confirm the obvious spatial and temporal difference of climate trends. Surface air temperature has increasing trends almost all over China especially in winter. Most stations are statistically significant. Annual precipitation shows increasing trends at more than half of the stations, and the increasing trends mainly occur in summer and winter while the decreasing trends occur in spring and autumn. However, most stations are not statistically significant. Potential evapotranspiration has decreasing trends in most stations and nearly half of the stations are statistically significant. Annual aridity/humidity index shows primarily decreasing trends with a distribution nearly the same as the increasing trends of precipitation. The index has the decreasing trends in spring and summer and the increasing trends in autumn and winter. The results suggest that it is necessary to consider precipitation and potential evapotranspiration simultaneously to describe the moisture conditions exactly. Abstract: Near-extreme outside dry- and wet-bulb temperatures are essential for the design of building HVAC systems. Coincident design temperatures currently defined by ASHRAE and CIBSE may not fully allow engineers to design an HVAC system that can match a risk level desired for the problem at hand. A rational method is therefore presented in this paper for the proper selection of coincident climate design conditions, which is based on the theory of probability. An average statistic risk level has been proved to be approximately equal to the annual percentile of coincident dry- and wet-bulb temperatures for HVAC systems whose thermal time constant is less than 1h. An algorithm is also developed to determine the contours of equal risk. Representative coincident design dry- and wet-bulb temperatures are obtained through statistic analysis of the 15 years of weather records in Hong Kong. These rationally derived outside design temperatures are compared with the coincident dry- and wet-bulb temperatures currently defined by ASHRAE and CIBSE. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
