Search

Binaries are known to play a key role in the mass loss and dynamical environments of evolved stars. Stellar and substellar companion interactions produce complex wind morphologies including rotating/expanding disks, bipolar outflows, and spiral wind patterns; however, the connection between these many structures and the gas-phase chemistry they harbor is not well constrained. To expand the sample of chemical inventories in interacting systems, we present a detailed spectroscopic case study of the binary C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star V Hya. Using spatially resolved Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations at Bands 3, 6, and 7, we characterize the rotational emission lines and distributions of molecules in its surrounding disk undergoing dynamical expansion (DUDE). We detect emission from over 15 molecules and isotopologues toward this source, and present resolved maps for the brightest tracers of carbonaceous chemistry (e.g., CCH, C4H, HC5N, HNC, and CH 3 CN ). Employing LTE and non-LTE models of emission from the DUDE, we estimate the abundance distributions for optically thin species, and compare them with prototypical carbon-rich AGB envelopes. We find that the average abundances of detected species are within a factor of ∼5 from sources with similar mass-loss rates; however, the distribution of daughter species in V Hya is much more compact, with carbon chain species (CCH, C4H, and HC3N) appearing with abundances >10−7 even in the innermost sampled regions (200 au) of the disk. Using the atmospheric pulsation code written by George Bowen, we have performed a parameter study examining the effects of modifying various parameters of models of oxygen-rich AGB atmospheres pulsating in the fundamental and first-overtone modes. For each pulsation mode, we have examined the effects of adjusting the dust condensation temperature, dust condensation temperature range, pulsation amplitude, dust opacity, and metallicity. Our model grids are generated with the constraint that their luminosities are chosen to span the range of observed mass loss rates at a chosen mass. The dust condensation temperature, pulsation amplitude, and dust opacity have strong effects on the ultimate location and shape of the final model grids in the mass luminosity plane. The mass loss rate evolution of the fundamental and first-overtone mode models show a significant difference in behavior. While the fundamental mode models exhibit the typically assumed power–law relation with mass and luminosity, the first-overtone mode models show significant non-power law behavior at observed mass loss rates. Effectively, models in the first-overtone mode require somewhat higher luminosities to reach the same mass loss rates seen in fundamental mode models of the same mass, consistent with observed AGB stars. The chemistry of phosphorus (31P) in space is particularly significant due to the key role it plays in biochemistry on Earth. Utilising radio and infrared spectroscopic observations, several key phosphorus-containing molecules have been detected in interstellar clouds, circumstellar shells, and even extragalactic sources. Among these, phosphorus nitride (PN) was the first P-bearing molecule detected in space, and still is the species detected in the largest number of sources. Phosphorus oxide (PO) and phosphine (PH3) were also crucial species due to their role both in chemical networks and in forming biogenic compounds. The still limited high-angular resolution observations performed so far are shading light on the geometrical distribution of these molecules, which represent crucial insights on their formation processes. Observations have also highlighted the challenges and complexities associated with detecting and understanding phosphorus chemistry in space, owing to the low elemental abundance of P relative to other elements. This review article provides a state-of-art picture of the observational results obtained so far on phosphorus compounds in the interstellar medium. Special attention is given to star- forming regions, and to their implications for our understanding of prebiotic chemistry and the potential for life beyond Earth. Our knowledge of the dominant formation and destruction pathways of the most abundant species has improved, but critical questions remain open, among which: what is (are) the main phosphorus carrier(s) in space? Upcoming new facilities are expected to contribute significantly to this field, offering opportunities to both detect new phosphorus-bearing molecules and enlarge the number of sources in which the chemistry of P can be studied. The synergy between observations, theoretical models, laboratory experiments, and computational chemistry is mandatory to significantly progress in our comprehension of the chemistry of this important but poorly studied chemical element. A complete sample of red supergiant (RSG) stars is important for studying their properties. Identifying RSGs in extragalactic fields first requires removing the Galactic foreground dwarfs. The color–color diagram (CCD) method, specifically using r − z / z − H and J − H / H − K , has proven successful in several studies. However, in metal-poor galaxies, faint RSGs will mix into the dwarf branch in the CCD and would be removed, leading to an incomplete RSG sample. This work attempts to improve the CCD method in combination with the Gaia astrometric measurement to remove foreground contamination in order to construct a complete RSG sample in metal-poor galaxies. The empirical regions of RSGs in both CCDs are defined and modified by fitting the locations of RSGs in galaxies with a range of metallicity. The metal-poor galaxy NGC 6822 is taken as a case study for its low metallicity ([Fe/H] ≈ −1.0) and moderate distance (about 500 kpc). In the complete sample, we identify 1184 RSG, 1559 oxygen-rich AGB (O-AGBs), 1075 carbon-rich AGB (C-AGBs), and 140 extreme AGB (x-AGBs) candidates, with a contamination rate of approximately 20.5%, 9.7%, 6.8%, and 5.0%, respectively. We also present a pure sample, containing only the sources away from the dwarf branch, which includes 843 RSG, 1519 O-AGB, 1059 C-AGB, and 140 x-AGB candidates, with a contamination rate of approximately 6.5%, 8.8%, 6.1%, and 5.0%, respectively. About 600 and 450 RSG candidates are newly identified in the complete and pure samples, respectively, compared to the previous RSG sample in NGC 6822.

The circumstellar envelope of the carbon star CW Leo exhibited various unexpected changes in recent optical imaging observations. We have performed a follow-up observation using the Near-infrared Integral-Field Spectrograph (NIFS) equipped on the Gemini-North telescope. We report the near-infrared counterparts of a local brightness peak in the optical at the stellar position of CW Leo. On the other hand, a second peak detected at short wavelengths in the J band coincides with the brightest, bluest position in the optical images. The absorption features in the K band are minimized at a radius of 0 $\mathop{.}\limits^{{\rm{^{\prime} }}{\rm{^{\prime} }}}$ 2 from the predicted stellar position. The reduction of the absorption depths likely indicates dilution of the absorption features by thermal emission of dust grains newly formed at such a radius and heated by radiation from the central star. The broad absorption feature at 1.53 μ m is significantly deeper than in template carbon stars, consistent with the presence of a substantial amount of circumstellar material around CW Leo. Its northeastern quadrant lacks circumstellar absorption features and scattered light in the near-infrared regime, which are possibly manifestations of its conical cavity in both gas and dust. In addition, a cross correlation of CO overtone bands indicates that the average expansion velocity of dust grains is smaller to the northern direction, likewise the velocity of transverse wind components derived using the differential proper motion of a circumstellar whirled pattern. The gradual brightening of CW Leo and the changes in its innermost circumstellar envelope need further continuous monitoring observations to properly understand its transitional phase toward the post-asymptotic-giant-branch stage.

Over the last three years, the rates of all the main nuclear reactions involving the destruction and production of 26Al in stars (26Al(n, p)26Mg, 26Al(n, α)23Na, 26Al(p, γ)27Si and 25Mg(p, γ)26Al) have been re-evaluated thanks to new high-precision experimental measurements of their crosssections at energies of astrophysical interest, considerably reducing the uncertainties in the nuclear physics affecting their nucleosynthesis. We computed the nucleosynthetic yields ejected by the explosion of a high-mass star (20 M⊙, Z = 0.0134) using the FRANEC stellar code, considering two explosion energies, 1.2 × 1051 erg and 3 × 1051 erg. We quantify the change in the ejected amount of 26Al and other key species that is predicted when the new rate selection is adopted instead of the reaction rates from the STARLIB nuclear library. Additionally, the ratio of our ejected yields of 26Al to those of 14 other short-lived radionuclides (36Cl, 41Ca, 53Mn, 60Fe, 92Nb, 97Tc, 98Tc, 107Pd, 126Sn, 129I, 36Cs, 146Sm, 182Hf, 205Pb) are compared to early solar system isotopic ratios, inferred from meteorite measurements. The total ejected 26Al yields vary by a factor of ~3 when adopting the new rates or the STARLIB rates. Additionally, the new nuclear reaction rates also impact the predicted abundances of short-lived radionuclides in the early solar system relative to 26Al. However, it is not possible to reproduce all the short-lived radionuclide isotopic ratios with our massive star model alone, unless a second stellar source could be invoked, which must have been active in polluting the pristine solar nebula at a similar time of a core-collapse supernova. We present the discoveries of two giant plants orbiting the red-giant-branch star HD 112570 and the red-clump star HD 154391, based on the radial-velocity (RV) measurements from the Xinglong station and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory. Spectroscopic and asteroseismic analyses suggest that HD 112570 has a mass of 1.15 ± 0.12 M _☉ , a radius of 9.85 ± 0.23 R _☉ , a metallicity [Fe/H] of −0.46 ± 0.1, and $\mathrm{log}\,g$ of 2.47 ± 0.1. With the joint analysis of RV and Hipparcos-Gaia astrometry, we obtain a dynamical mass of ${M}_{{\rm{p}}}={3.42}_{-0.84}^{+1.4}\ {M}_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ , a period of $P={2615}_{-77}^{+85}$ days, and a moderate eccentricity of $e={0.20}_{-0.14}^{+0.16}$ for the Jovian planet HD 112570 b. For HD 154391, it has a mass of 2.07 ± 0.03 M _☉ , a radius of 8.56 ± 0.05 R _☉ , a metallicity [Fe/H] of 0.07 ± 0.1, and $\mathrm{log}\,g$ of 2.86 ± 0.1. The super-Jupiter HD 154391 b has a mass of ${M}_{{\rm{p}}}={9.1}_{-1.9}^{+2.8}\ {M}_{\mathrm{Jup}}$ , a period of $P={5163}_{-57}^{+60}$ days, and an eccentricity of $e={0.20}_{-0.04}^{+0.04}$ . We found that HD 154391 b has one of the longest orbital periods among those ever discovered orbiting evolved stars, which may provide a valuable case in our understanding of planetary formation at wider orbits. Moreover, while a mass gap at 4 M _Jup seems to be present in the population of giant stars, there appear to be no significant differences in the distribution of metallicity among giant planets with masses above or below this threshold. Finally, the origin of the abnormal accumulation near 2 au for planets around large evolved stars ( R _⋆ > 21 R _☉ ), remains unclear.

Asteroseismology offers a profound window into stellar interiors and has emerged as a pivotal technique in exoplanetary research. This study harnesses the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite observations to reveal, for the first time, the asteroseismic oscillations of four exoplanet-hosting stars. Through meticulous analysis, we extracted their asteroseismic signatures, enabling the precise determination of stellar masses, radii, luminosities, and surface gravities. These parameters exhibit markedly reduced uncertainties compared to those derived from spectroscopic methods. Crucially, the exoplanets orbiting these stars were initially identified via radial velocity measurements. The refinement of host stellar masses necessitates a corresponding adjustment in planetary characteristics. Employing asteroseismology, we recalibrated the exoplanets’ minimum masses and semimajor axes—a novel approach in the field. For instance, the exoplanet HD 5608 b's minimum mass, denoted as $M\sin i$ , was ascertained to be 1.421 ± 0.091 M _J through the integration of asteroseismic and radial velocity data. Similarly, two planets within the 7 CMa system yielded $M\sin i$ values of 1.940 ± 0.064 M _J and 0.912 ± 0.067 M _J , respectively. Two planets in the HD 33844 system presented $M\sin i$ figures of 1.726 ± 0.145 M _J and 1.541 ± 0.182 M _J , while the HIP 67851 system's planets registered $M\sin i$ at 1.243 ± 0.139 M _J and a notably higher 5.387 ± 0.699 M _J . This investigation extends beyond mere parameter refinement, it underscores the synergy between asteroseismology and exoplanetology, yielding unprecedented precision in system metrics. Focusing on a quartet of K-type giants in advanced evolutionary phases, our work positions these systems as invaluable astrophysical laboratories, offering insights into the potential trajectory of our own solar system's fate.

We present a JWST imaging survey of I Zw 18, the archetypal extremely metal-poor, star-forming (SF), blue compact dwarf galaxy. With an oxygen abundance of only ∼3% Z _⊙ , it is among the lowest-metallicity systems known in the local Universe, and is, therefore, an excellent accessible analog for the galactic building blocks which existed at early epochs of ionization and star formation. These JWST data provide a comprehensive infrared (IR) view of I Zw 18 with eight filters utilizing both Near Infrared Camera (F115W, F200W, F356W, and F444W) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (F770W, F1000W, F1500W, and F1800W) photometry, which we have used to identify key stellar populations that are bright in the near- and mid-IR. These data allow for a better understanding of the origins of dust and dust-production mechanisms in metal-poor environments by characterizing the population of massive, evolved stars in the red supergiant (RSG) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phases. In addition, it enables the identification of the brightest dust-enshrouded young stellar objects (YSOs), which provide insight into the formation of massive stars at extremely low metallicities typical of the very early Universe. This paper provides an overview of the observational strategy and data processing, and presents first science results, including identifications of dusty AGB, RSG, and bright YSO candidates. These first results assess the scientific quality of JWST data and provide a guide for obtaining and interpreting future observations of the dusty and evolved stars inhabiting compact dwarf SF galaxies in the local Universe.

We present a catalog of 71,364 pointlike UV sources with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometry and GALEX far-UV (FUV)−near-UV (NUV) ≤0.1 mag. The limit corresponds to stellar T _eff ≳15,000−20,000 K, slightly depending on gravity but nearly reddening independent for Milky Way−type dust. Most sources are hot white dwarfs (WDs) and subdwarfs. Comparing the spectral energy distribution (SED; GALEX FUV, NUV, SDSS u,g,r,i,z ) of 35,294 sources having good photometry with colors of stellar models and known objects, we identify 12,404 ± ${}_{1267}^{1871}$ binary hot-compact stars with a cooler, less-evolved companion (with a possible 8%–15% contamination by low-redshift QSOs), and 22,848 ± ${}_{3853}^{1267}$ single-star candidates. Single-star counts are an upper limit because pairs of similar stars have single-star-like SEDs, and hot WDs with main-sequence companions of certain types (depending on the WD’s radius) are missed or counted as single in the available wavelength range and selection. The catalog offers unique leverage for identifying hot WDs, elusive at longer wavelengths when a cooler, larger companion dominates optical–IR fluxes: 51% of the binary-star and 20% of the single-star candidates are previously unknown objects. Gaia DR3 provides a parallax with error ≤20% for 34% of the binary-star candidates and 45% of single-star candidates, allowing T _eff , E _B _− _V , radius, and L _bol to be derived from SED analysis. The binary-candidate sample usefully expands the overall current binary-WD census to subpopulations elusive to Gaia and to other searches. The binary fraction among this specific sample of hot compact objects, albeit with the mentioned biases, b _f ≳ 46%, compared with that of their progenitors (>80%–50% for mass range 8−1 M _⊙ , according to M. Moe), implies a lower merging rate than found for massive stars by H. Sana et al.

MWC 349A is one of the rare stars known to have hydrogen radio recombination line (RRL) masers. The bright maser emission makes it possible to study the dynamics of the system at milliarcsecond (mas) precision. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the 1.4 and 0.8 mm continuum emission of MWC 349A, as well as the H30 α and H26 α RRLs. Using the most extended array configuration of C43-10 with a maximum baseline of 16.2 km, we spatially resolved the H30 α line and 1.4 mm continuum emission for the first time. In addition to the known H30 α and H26 α maser emission from a Keplerian disk at LSR velocities from −12 to 28 km s ^−1 and from an ionized wind for velocities between −12 to −40 km s ^−1 and 28 to 60 km s ^−1 , we found evidence of a jet along the polar axis at V _LSR from −85 to −40 km s ^−1 and +60 to +100 km s ^−1 . These masers are found in a linear structure nearly aligned with the polar axis of the disk. If these masers lie close to the polar axis, their velocities could be as high as 575 km s ^−1 , which cannot be explained solely by a single expanding wind as proposed in Báez-Rubio et al. We suggest that they originate from a high-velocity jet, likely launched by a magnetohydrodynamic wind. The jet appears to rotate in the same direction as the rotation of the disk. A detailed radiative transfer modeling of these emissions will further elucidate the origin of these masers in the wind.

We analyze pre-explosion near- and mid-infrared (IR) imaging of the site of SN 2023ixf in the nearby spiral galaxy M101 and characterize the candidate progenitor star. The star displays compelling evidence of variability with a possible period of ≈1000 days and an amplitude of Δ m ≈ 0.6 mag in extensive monitoring with the Spitzer Space Telescope since 2004, likely indicative of radial pulsations. Variability consistent with this period is also seen in the near-IR J and K _s bands between 2010 and 2023, up to just 10 days before the explosion. Beyond the periodic variability, we do not find evidence for any IR-bright pre-supernova outbursts in this time period. The IR brightness ( ${M}_{{K}_{s}}=-10.7$ mag) and color ( J − K _s = 1.6 mag) of the star suggest a luminous and dusty red supergiant. Modeling of the phase-averaged spectral energy distribution (SED) yields constraints on the stellar temperature ( ${T}_{\mathrm{eff}}={3500}_{-1400}^{+800}$ K) and luminosity ( $\mathrm{log}L/{L}_{\odot }=5.1\pm 0.2$ ). This places the candidate among the most luminous Type II supernova progenitors with direct imaging constraints, with the caveat that many of these rely only on optical measurements. Comparison with stellar evolution models gives an initial mass of M _init = 17 ± 4 M _⊙ . We estimate the pre-supernova mass-loss rate of the star between 3 and 19 yr before explosion from the SED modeling at $\dot{M}\approx 3\times {10}^{-5}$ to 3 × 10 ^−4 M _⊙ yr ^−1 for an assumed wind velocity of v _w = 10 km s ^−1 , perhaps pointing to enhanced mass loss in a pulsation-driven wind.

A new interstellar molecule, FeC ( X ^3 Δ _i ), has been identified in the circumstellar envelope of the carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch star IRC+10216. FeC is the second iron-bearing species conclusively observed in the interstellar medium, in addition to FeCN, also found in IRC+10216. The J = 4 → 3, 5 → 4, and 6 → 5 rotational transitions of this free radical near 160, 201, and 241 GHz, respectively, were detected in the lowest spin–orbit ladder, Ω = 3, using the Submillimeter Telescope of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) for the 1 mm lines and the ARO 12 m at 2 mm. Because the ground state of FeC is inverted, these transitions are the lowest energy lines. The detected features exhibit slight U shapes with LSR velocities near V _LSR ≈ −26 km s ^−1 and linewidths of Δ V _1/2 ≈ 30 km s ^−1 , line parameters characteristic of IRC+10216. Radiative transfer modeling of FeC suggests that the molecule has a shell distribution with peak radius near 300 R _* (∼6″) extending out to ∼500 R _* (∼10″) and a fractional abundance, relative to H _2 , of f ∼ 6 × 10 ^−11 . The previous FeCN spectra were also modeled, yielding an abundance of f ∼ 8 × 10 ^−11 in a larger shell situated near 800 R _* . These distributions suggest that FeC may be the precursor species for FeCN. Unlike cyanides and carbon-chain molecules, diatomic carbides with a metallic element are rare in IRC+10216, with FeC being the first such detection.

The number ratio of carbon-rich to oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (the so-called C/M ratio) is closely related to the evolution environment of the host galaxy. This work studies the C/M ratio in 14 galaxies within the Local Group with the most complete and clean sample of member stars identified in our previous works. The borderlines between carbon-rich AGB and oxygen-rich AGB stars as well as red supergiants are defined by Gaussian mixture model fitting to the number density in the (J − K) / K diagram for the member stars of the LMC and M33, and then applied to the other galaxies by shifting the difference in the position of tip red giant branch (TRGB). The C/M ratios are obtained after precise and consistent categorization. Although for galaxies with larger distance modulo there is greater uncertainty, the C/M ratio is clearly found to decrease with the color index (J − K) 0 of TRGB as the indicator of metallicity, which agrees with previous studies and can be explained by the fact that carbon stars are more easily formed in a metal-poor environment. Furthermore, the C/M ratio within M33 is found to increase with galactocentric distance, which coincides with this scenario and the galactic chemical evolution model. On the other hand, the C/M ratio within M31 is found to decrease with galactocentric radius, which deserves further study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new class of dusty post-Red Giant Branch (post-RGB) stars has recently been identified in the Magellanic Clouds. Their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) suggest that their mass-ejecta are similar to dusty post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) stars. We modeled the SEDs of a select sample of post-RGB and post-AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), quantified the total dust mass in the disks and shells and set rough constraints on the dust grain compositions and sizes. The shells were significantly more massive than the disks. Our models suggest that circumstellar disks, when present, are geometrically thick with a substantial opening angle, which is consistent with numerical simulations of CE evolution (CEE). Comparison of our model dust mass values with the predictions of dust production during CEE on the RGB suggest that CEE occurred near or at the tip of the RGB for the post-RGB sources in our sample. Amorphous silicate emission features at 10 and 18 μ m are seen in the model spectra of several post-RGBs. A surprising result is that the ejected dust in certain post-RGB sources appears to be carbon-rich, thus, providing independent support for the hypothesis of binary interactions leading to the formation of dusty post-RGB objects. The 26Al abundance holds a special role in present-day astrophysics, since it is a probe of active nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy and a valuable constraint of Galactic core-collapse supernovae rate. It is estimated through the detection of the 1809-keV γ-line of the daughter 26Mg and from the superabundance of 26Mg in comparison with the most abundant 24Mg isotope in meteorites. Accurate knowledge of the reaction rates involving 26Al, its stable counterpart 27Al and 24Mg is then mandatory. Moreover, these nuclei enter the MgAl cycle playing an important role in the production of Al and Mg isotopes. Recently, high-resolution stellar surveys have shown that the Mg-Al anti-correlation in red giants of globular clusters may hide the existence of multiple stellar populations, and that the relative abundances of Mg isotopes may not show correlation with Al.The common thread running through these astrophysical scenarios is the 27Al(p,α)24Mg reaction, which is the main 27Al destruction channel and directly correlates its abundance with the 24Mg one. Since available reaction rates show an order of magnitude uncertainty owing to the vanishingly small cross section at astrophysical energies, we have applied the Trojan Horse Method to deduce the reaction rate with no need of extrapolation. The indirect measurement made it possible to assess the contribution of the 84-keV resonance and to lower the upper limits on the strength of nearby resonances, with potential important impact for astrophysics. In particular, modifications in the 27Al and 24Mg abundances up to ∼30% are predicted for intermediate mass stars.

We present a photometric study of the resolved stellar populations in Andromeda IX (And IX), the closest satellite to M31, a metal-poor and low-mass dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We estimate a distance modulus of ${24.56}_{-0.15}^{+0.05}$ mag based on the tip of the red giant branch. By probing the variability of asymptotic giant branch stars, we study the star formation history of And IX. We identified 50 long-period variables (LPVs) in And IX using the Isaac Newton Telescope in two filters, the Sloan $i^{\prime} $ and Harris V . In this study, we selected LPVs within two half-light radii with amplitudes in the range of 0.2–2.20 mag. It is found that the peak of star formation reaches ∼8.2 ± 3.1 × 10 ^−4 M _⊙ yr ^−1 at ≈6 Gyr ago. Our findings suggest an outside-in galaxy formation scenario for And IX with a quenching occurring ${3.65}_{-0.13}^{+1.52}$ Gyr ago with a star formation rate (SFR) in the order of 2.0 × 10 ^−4 M _⊙ yr ^−1 at redshift

Emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is a promising tool for estimating star formation rate (SFR) in galaxies, but the origin of its sources of excitation, which include not only young but possibly also old stars, remains uncertain. We analyze Spitzer mid-infrared mapping-mode spectroscopic observations of the nuclear and extranuclear regions of 33 nearby galaxies to study the contribution of evolved stars to PAH emission. In combination with photometric measurements derived from ultraviolet, H α , and infrared images, the spatially resolved spectral decomposition enables us to characterize the PAH emission, SFR, and stellar mass of the sample galaxies on subkiloparsec scales. We demonstrate that the traditional empirical correlation between PAH luminosity and SFR has a secondary dependence on specific SFR, or, equivalently, stellar mass. Ultraviolet-faint regions with lower specific SFRs and hence a greater fraction of evolved stars emit stronger PAH emission at fixed SFR than ultraviolet-bright regions. We reformulate the PAH-based SFR estimator by explicitly introducing stellar mass as a second parameter to account for the contribution of evolved stars to PAH excitation. The influence of evolved stars can explain the sublinear correlation between PAH emission and SFR, and it can partly account for the PAH deficit in dwarf galaxies and low-metallicity environments.

V503 Her was previously proposed as an eclipsing symbiotic candidate based on photometric behavior and spectroscopic appearance indicating the composite optical spectrum. To investigate its nature, we analyzed long-term photometric observations covering 100 yr of its photometric history and new low-resolution optical spectroscopic data, supplemented with the multifrequency measurements collected from several surveys and satellites. Based on the analysis presented in this paper, we claim that V503 Her is not an eclipsing binary star. The optical and infrared wavelengths are dominated by a K-type bright giant with an effective temperature of 4500 K, luminosity of 1900 L _⊙ , and subsolar metallicity on the asymptotic giant branch showing semiregular complex multiperiodic pulsation behavior. V503 Her does not show the characteristics of strongly interacting symbiotic variables, but some pieces of evidence suggest that it could still be one of the “hidden” accreting-only symbiotic systems. However, the currently available data do not allow us to fully confirm or constrain the parameters of a possible companion.

The evolved massive star populations of the Local Group galaxies are generally thought to be well understood. However, recent work has suggested that the Wolf–Rayet (WR) content of M31 may have been underestimated. We therefore began a pilot project to search for new WRs in M31 and to reexamine the completeness of our previous WR survey, finished almost a decade prior. Our improved imaging data and spectroscopic follow-up confirmed 19 new WRs across three small fields in M31. These newly discovered WRs are generally fainter than the previously known sample due to slightly increased reddening as opposed to intrinsic faintness. From these findings, we estimate that there are another ∼60 WRs left to be discovered in M31; however, the overall ratio of WN-type (nitrogen-rich) to WC-type (carbon-rich) WRs remains unchanged with our latest additions to the M31 WR census. We are in the process of extending this pilot WR survey to include the rest of M31, and a more complete population will be detailed in our future work.

The engulfment of substellar bodies (SBs), such as brown dwarfs and planets, by giant stars is a possible explanation for rapidly rotating giants, lithium-rich giants, and the presence of SBs in close orbits around subdwarfs and white dwarfs. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of the flow in the vicinity of an engulfed SB. We model the SB as a rigid body with a reflective surface because it cannot accrete. This reflective boundary changes the flow morphology to resemble that of engulfed compact objects with outflows. We measure the drag coefficients for the ram-pressure and gravitational drag forces acting on the SB, and use them to integrate its trajectory inside the star. We find that engulfment can increase the luminosity of a 1 M _⊙ star by up to a few orders of magnitude. The time for the star to return to its original luminosity is up to a few thousand years when the star has evolved to ≈10 R _⊙ and up to a few decades at the tip of the red giant branch (RGB). No SBs can eject the envelope of a 1 M _⊙ star before it evolves to ≈10 R _⊙ if the orbit of the SB is the only energy source contributing to the ejection. In contrast, SBs as small as ≈10 M _Jup can eject the envelope at the tip of the RGB. The numerical framework we introduce here can be used to study planetary engulfment in a simplified setting that captures the physics of the flow at the scale of the SB.

We study the internal and external alignment of carbonaceous grains in the interstellar medium (ISM) within the Radiative Torque (RAT) paradigm. For internal alignment (IA), we find that hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC) grains having nuclear paramagnetism due to hydrogen protons have efficient nuclear relaxation, whereas both HAC and graphite grains can have efficient inelastic relaxation at both low- J and high- J attractors. For external alignment, HAC and pure graphite grains can align with the radiation direction ( k -RAT) at low- J attractors but cannot have stable alignment at high- J attractors due to the suppression of radiative precession. However, HAC grains can align with the magnetic field ( B -RAT) at high- J attractors due to fast Larmor precession compared to gas collisions. For HAC grains drifting through the ISM, they can align along the induced electric field ( E -RAT) at low- J attractors due to the fast electric precession and only small HAC grains can align at high- J attractors. Nuclear paramagnetic relaxation is inefficient for HAC due to the suppression of nuclear susceptibility. We then study the alignment of carbon dust in the envelope of a C-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch star (IRC+10216) and find that grains aligned at low- J attractors may occur via k -RAT with the wrong IA in the inner region but via B -RAT in the outer region. However, grains aligned at high- J attractors have the right IA alignment via k -RAT due to efficient inelastic relaxation. The polarization pattern observed toward IRC+10216 by SOFIA/HAWC+ can be reproduced when only grains at low- J attractors are present due to the removal of grains at high- J attractors by the RAT disruption.

In this paper we study stellar variability in the globular cluster NGC 3201 in the magnitude range V = 16–17, corresponding to the subgiant branch and blue stragglers region of the cluster. Our aim is to expand the sample of new type of variables with low amplitude and a short period found in previous papers. We used observations obtained at the Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito. We applied statistical tests and analyzed periodograms obtained by generalized Lomb–Scargle and phase dispersion minimization methods. We found five stars considered as variables and one as a possible variable. According to their periods (fluctuating between 0.33 and 0.57 days), amplitudes (between 0.03 and 0.87 V magnitudes), the position in the color–magnitude diagram, and the shape of their phased light curves, they do not resemble any known variable star. Because stellar variability could be produced by more than one process, we propose to complement this work with a spectroscopic analysis to confirm our results.

New observations are presented of four evolved objects that display long, multiyear variations in their light curves. These are interpreted as good evidence of their binary nature, with the modulation caused by the barycenter motion of the evolved star resulting in a periodic obscuration by a circumbinary disk. Although protoplanetary nebulae (PPNe) commonly possess bipolar nebulae, which are thought to be shaped by a binary companion, there are very few PPNe in which a binary companion has been found. Three of the objects in this study appear to be PPNe, IRAS 07253−2001, 08005−2356, and 17542−0603, with long periods of 5.2, 6.9, and 8.2 yr, respectively. The binary nature of IRAS 08005−2356 has recently been confirmed by a radial velocity study. Two samples, one of PPNe and the other of post-AGB star candidates, are investigated for further evidence on how common is a long-period light-curve variation. Both samples suggest such light-curve variations are not common. The fourth object, IRAS 20056+1834 (QY Sge), is an obscured RV Tau variable of the RVb subclass, with a long period of 3.9 yr and pulsation periods of 102.9 and 51.5 days. The period of this object is seen to vary by 2%. Evidence is presented for a recent mass ejection in IRAS 17542−0603.

Water fountains (WFs) are thought to represent an early stage in the morphological evolution of circumstellar envelopes surrounding low- and intermediate-mass evolved stars. These objects are considered to transition from spherical to asymmetric shapes. Despite their potential importance in this transformation process of evolved stars, there are only a few known examples. To identify new WF candidates, we used databases of circumstellar OH (1612 MHz) and H2O (22.235 GHz) maser sources, and compared the velocity ranges of the two maser lines. Finally, 41 sources were found to have a velocity range for the H2O maser line that exceeded that of the OH maser line. Excluding known planetary nebulae and after reviewing the maser spectra in the original literature, we found for 11 sources the exceedance as significant, qualifying them as new WF candidates. A multitude of phenomena—such as the chemical enrichment of the Universe, the mass spectrum of planetary nebulae, white dwarfs and gravitational wave progenitors, the frequency distribution of supernovae, the fate of exoplanets, etc.—are highly regulated by the amounts of mass that stars expel through a powerful wind. For more than half a century, these winds of cool aging stars have been interpreted within the common interpretive framework of 1D models. I here discuss how that framework now appears to be highly problematic. Current 1D mass-loss rate formulae differ by orders of magnitude, rendering contemporary stellar evolution predictions highly uncertain. These stellar winds harbor 3D complexities that bridge 23 orders of magnitude in scale, ranging from the nanometer up to thousands of astronomical units. We need to embrace and understand these 3D spatial realities if we aim to quantify mass loss and assess its effect on stellar evolution. We therefore need to gauge the following: The 3D life of molecules and solid-state aggregates: The gas-phase clusters that form the first dust seeds are not yet identified. This limits our ability to predict mass-loss rates using a self-consistent approach. The emergence of 3D clumps: They contribute in a nonnegligible way to the mass loss, although they seem of limited importance for the wind-driving mechanism. The 3D lasting impact of a (hidden) companion: Unrecognized binary interaction has biased previous mass-loss rate estimates toward values that are too large. Only then will it be possible to drastically improve our predictive power of the evolutionary path in 4D (classical) spacetime of any star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new class of dusty post-Red Giant Branch (post-RGB) stars has recently been identified in the Magellanic Clouds. Their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) suggest that their mass-ejecta are similar to dusty post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) stars. We modeled the SEDs of a select sample of post-RGB and post-AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), quantified the total dust mass in the disks and shells and set rough constraints on the dust grain compositions and sizes. The shells were significantly more massive than the disks. Our models suggest that circumstellar disks, when present, are geometrically thick with a substantial opening angle, which is consistent with numerical simulations of CE evolution (CEE). Comparison of our model dust mass values with the predictions of dust production during CEE on the RGB suggest that CEE occurred near or at the tip of the RGB for the post-RGB sources in our sample. Amorphous silicate emission features at 10 and 18 μm are seen in the model spectra of several post-RGBs. A surprising result is that the ejected dust in certain post-RGB sources appears to be carbon-rich, thus, providing independent support for the hypothesis of binary interactions leading to the formation of dusty post-RGB objects.

Background: Most of the stars in the Universe will end their evolution by losing their envelope during the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phase, enriching the interstellar medium of galaxies with heavy elements, partially condensed into dust grains formed in their extended circumstellar envelopes. Among these stars, carbon-rich TP-AGB stars (C-stars) are particularly relevant for the chemical enrichment of galaxies. We here investigated the role of the metallicity in the dust formation process from a theoretical viewpoint. Methods: We coupled an up-to-date description of dust growth and dust-driven wind, which included the time-averaged effect of shocks, with FRUITY stellar evolutionary tracks. We compared our predictions with observations of C-stars in our Galaxy, in the Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) and in the Galactic Halo, characterised by metallicity between solar and 1/10 of solar. Results: Our models explained the variation of the gas and dust content around C-stars derived from the IRS Spitzer spectra. The wind speed of the C-stars at varying metallicity was well reproduced by our description. We predicted the wind speed at metallicity down to 1/10 of solar in a wide range of mass-loss rates.

The slow neutron-capture process (s-process) efficiency in low-mass AGB stars (1.5 < M/M⊙ < 3) critically depends on how mixing processes in stellar interiors are handled, which is still affected by considerable uncertainties. In this work, we compute the evolution and nucleosynthesis of low-mass AGB stars at low metallicities using the MESA stellar evolution code. The combined data set includes models with initial masses Mini/M⊙=2 and 3 for initial metallicities Z=0.001 and 0.002. The nucleosynthesis was calculated for all relevant isotopes by post-processing with the NuGrid mppnp code. Using these models, we show the impact of the uncertainties affecting the main mixing processes on heavy element nucleosynthesis, such as convection and mixing at convective boundaries. We finally compare our theoretical predictions with observed surface abundances on low-metallicity stars. We find that mixing at the interface between the He-intershell and the CO-core has a critical impact on the s-process at low metallicities, and its importance is comparable to convective boundary mixing processes under the convective envelope, which determine the formation and size of the 13C-pocket. Additionally, our results indicate that models with very low to no mixing below the He-intershell during thermal pulses, and with a 13C-pocket size of at least ∼3 × 10−4 M⊙, are strongly favored in reproducing observations. The wind-driving process of AGB stars is thought to be a two-step process: first matter is levitated by shock waves, and then accelerated outwards by radiation pressure on newly condensed dust grains. When modelling such a wind, spherical symmetry is usually assumed. This is in stark contrast with recent observations, which shows significant non-spherical structures. Giant convection cells cover the surface of the star, and matter is being ejected into the atmosphere where it condenses into lumpy dust clouds. We try to quantify the differences between what is simulated in the 3D star-in-a-box models (CO5BOLD code) and the 1D dynamical atmosphere and wind models (DARWIN code). The impact of having a non-spherical star on the wind properties is also investigated. We find that the inherent non-spherical behaviour of AGB stars might induce a dust-driven weak wind already early on the AGB, and including that the star is anisotropic when simulating the wind leads to large time variations in the density of the outflow. Such variations might be observable as small-scale structures in the circumstellar envelope. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The modern era of highly sensitive telescopes is enabling the detection of more and more molecular species in various astronomical environments. Many of these are now being carefully examined for the first time. However, to move beyond detection to more detailed analysis such as radiative transfer modelling, certain molecular properties need to be properly measured and calculated. The importance of contributions from vibrationally excited states or collisional (de-)excitations can vary greatly, depending on the specific molecule and the environment being studied. Here, we discuss the present molecular data needs for detailed radiative transfer modelling of observations of molecular rotational transitions, primarily in the (sub-)millimetre and adjacent regimes, and with a focus on the stellar winds of AGB stars.
