Experimental efforts focus on providing key spectroscopic information that will shed light into the structure of exotic nuclei and understanding the driving mechanism behind the shell evolution. In this work, we investigate the Z=6 spin-orbit shell gap towards the neutron dripline. To do so, we employed NA(p,2p)CA−1 quasi-free scattering reactions to measure the proton component of the 2 state of C. In order to investigate the persistence of the N=50 gap for the Nickel isotopes, an experiment has been performed at RIBF (RIKEN, Japan) to produce exotic nuclei around ⁷⁸Ni by in-flight fission of a ²³⁸U beam. The BigRIPS and ZeroDegree spectrometers were used to purify and select the nuclei of interest. Their decay was detected with the EURICA detector for γ-ray detection, coupled with the charged particle WAS3aBi detector. The analysis of the correlations between the ion implantation and their decay, as well as the γ decay spectra in simple and double coincidence allowed us to propose a level scheme of the excited states for the ⁷⁹Zn, and we assigned the spin and parity for most of the states. We also constrained the spin value for the fundamental state of the ⁸⁰Cu, between 3hbar and 5hbar. Comparison with a core-particle coupling model allowed us to interpret the level scheme and propose hypothesis about the nature of the observed states. The main purpose of the present manuscript is to review the structural evolution along the isotonic and isotopic chains around the "traditional" magic numbers 8; 20; 28; 50; 82 and 126. The exotic regions of the chart of nuclides have been explored during the three last decades. Then the postulate of permanent magic numbers was de nitely abandoned and the reason for these structural mutations has been in turn searched for. General trends in the evolution of shell closures are discussed using complementary experimental information, such as the binding energies of the orbits bounding the shell gaps, the trends of the rst collective states of the even-even semi-magic nuclei, and the behavior of certain single-nucleon states. Each section is devoted to a particular magic number. It describes the underlying physics of the shell evolution which is not yet fully understood and indicates future experimental and theoretical challenges. The nuclear mean eld embodies various facets of the Nucleon- Nucleon interaction, among which the spin-orbit and tensor terms play decisive roles in the shell evolutions. The present review intends to provide experimental constraints to be used for the re nement of theoretical models aiming at a good description of the existing atomic nuclei and at more accurate predictions of hitherto unreachable systems., to be published in Prog. Two Coulomb excitation experiments on neutron rich exotic nuclei have been performed atGANIL. They allowed the measurement of the reduced transition probability B(E2) (fromground state to first excited state) of some nuclei around N=40. This number, 40, is a halfmagicnumber in the shell model. For nuclei with an important neutron excess, it is predictedthat the shell closure is stronger at N=40. The B(E2) is a good tool for testing this growing.We have measured, by using the LISE3 spectrometer and a gamma multidetector, B(E2) of 68JVi,66Ni and 72Zn, unknown till now. We have used for the first time segmented germanium "clovers"detector, for photon detection (v/c ~ 0.3).Results confirm the strong shell effect for 68Ni. Indeed 68 Ni was shown to be the Nickelisotope with the lowest value of B(E2), and hence the most rigid isotope. Nevertheless it seemsthat the shell effect at N = 40 decreases rapidly, for other isotopes very close to 68Ni (Z = 28and N = 40)., Deux expériences d'excitation coulombienne de noyaux exotiques riches en neutrons ont étémenées au GANIL.
