Effective management is essential for small-scale fisheries to continue providing food and livelihoods for households, particularly in developing countries where other options are often limited. Studies on the population dynamics and stock assessment on fishery target species are thus imperative to sustain their fisheries and the benefits for the society. In Lake Koka (Ethiopia), very little is known about the vital population parameters and exploitation status of the fishery target species: tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, common carp Cyprinus carpio and catfish Clarias gariepinus. Our study, therefore, aimed at determining the vital population parameters and assessing the status of these target species in Lake Koka using length frequency data collected quarterly from commercial catches from 2007-2012. A total of 20 097 fish specimens (distributed as 7 933 tilapia, 6 025 catfish and 6 139 common carp) were measured for the analysis. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters and their confidence intervals were determined from modal progression analysis using ELEFAN I and applying the jackknife technique. Mortality parameters were determined from length-converted catch curves and empirical models. The exploitation status of these target species were then assessed by computing exploitation rates (E) from mortality parameters as well as from size indicators i.e., assessing the size distribution of fish catches relative to the size at maturity (Lm), the size that provides maximum cohort biomass (Lopt) and the abundance of mega-spawners. The mean value of growth parameters L∞, K and the growth performance index ø’ were 44.5 cm, 0.41/year and 2.90 for O. niloticus, 74.1 cm, 0.28/year and 3.19 for C. carpio and 121.9 cm, 0.16/year and 3.36 for C. gariepinus, respectively. The 95 % confidence intervals of the estimates were also computed. Total mortality (Z) estimates were 1.47, 0.83 and 0.72/yearfor O. niloticus, C. carpio and C. gariepinus, respectively. Our study suggest that O. niloticus is in a healthy state, while C. gariepinus show signs of growth overfishing (when both exploitation rate (E) and size indicators were considered). In case of C. carpio, the low exploitation rate encountered would point to underfishing, while the size indicators of the catches would suggest that too small fish are harvested leading to growth overfishing. We concluded that fisheries production in Lake Koka could be enhanced by increasing (E) toward optimum level of exploitation (Eopt) for the underexploited C. carpio and by increasing the size at first capture (Lc) toward the Lopt range for all target species. Un manejo pesquero eficiente es fundamental para que las pesquerías artesanales puedan continuar proveyendo alimento y sustento para los hogares, particularmente en los países en vía de desarrollo, en donde otras opciones a menudo son limitadas. Estudios sobre la dinámica poblacional de las especies objetivo de las pesquerías son, por lo tanto, imperativos para mantener las pesquerías y los beneficios para las sociedades. Esto también es válido para los recursos del Lago Koka (Etiopia) en donde hasta ahora se sabe muy poco sobre los parámetros poblacionales vitales y el estatus de las especies objetivo como la tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, la carpa Cyprinus carpio y el bagre Clarias gariepinus. El estudio aquí presentado tiene como objetivo determinar estos parámetros y evaluar el estado de la pesquería de estas especies en el lago Koka, utilizando los datos de frecuencia de tallas obtenidas de capturas trimestrales en el periodo 2007-2012. Un total de 20 097 especímenes fueron medidos (7 933 de tilapia, 6 025 de bagre y 6 139 de carpa). Los parámetros de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy fueron derivados del análisis de progresión de las modas usando ELEFAN I y aplicando la técnica de jackknife. Las tasas de mortalidad fueron estimadas de curvas de capturas basadas en longitudes y usando modelos empíricos. La tasa de explotación (E), se estimó con los parámetros de mortalidad y también considerando indicadores del tamaño a través de la distribución de tallas en las capturas y su relación con la talla de la primera madurez (Lm), el tamaño que provee la biomasa máxima del cohorte (Lopt) y la abundancia de los “mega-desovantes”. Los valores calculados para los parámetros de crecimiento L∞, K y el índice de la capacidad de crecimiento ø’ fueron: 44.5 cm, 0.41 año-1 y 2.90 para O. niloticus, 74.1 cm, 0.28 año-1 y 3.19 para C. carpio y 121.9 cm, 0.16 año-1 y 3.36 para C. gariepinus, respectivamente. La tasa de mortalidad total (Z) fue estimada en 1.47, 0.83 y 0.72 año-1 para O. niloticus, C. carpio and C. gariepinus, respectivamente. "From April 2010 to July 2012 data and samples on the biology and the fishery of Diapterus brevirostris (Teleostei: Gerreidae) were collected in the coasts of Colima and Jalisco. Total catches show fluctuations in the last twenty years in Colima. The catches in Jalisco do not show this species alone, but mixed with other “Mojarras” during the last eleven years. The highest catches in Colima and Jalisco are obtained during summer. First age and length of capture was at 2.04 years and 15.00 cm in Colima and 2.98 years and 19.80 cm in Jalisco. Total mortality was Z = 2.06 in Colima and Z = 1.96 in Jalisco. Natural mortality was M = 0.139 in both cases. Fishing mortality was F = 1.921 in Colima and F = 1.821 in Jalisco, with a survival rate of S = 0.127 in Colima and S = 0.141 in Jalisco. Exploitation rate was E = 0.933 in Colima and E = 0.929 in Jalisco. Yield per recruit was y/r = 106.47 g in Colima and y/r = 107.5 g in Jalisco. The present study aimed to investigate the changes of bigeye kilka Clupeonella grimmi population caused by human and natural factors in southern waters of the Caspian Sea. This study was conducted in 2009 and 2010 during which Length, weight and age were studied. The annual survival rate, natural and fishing mortality in 2009 were estimated 0.305 yr-1, 0.448 yr-1 and 0.736 yr-1, and in 2010 were 0.309 yr-1, 0.419 yr-1 and 0.775 yr-1, respectively. Accordingly, total mortality in 2009 and 2010 was 1.184 yr-1 and 1.174 yr-1 and the exploitation rate was calculated 0.621 and 0.660, respectively. Bigeye kilka appropriated 4.5% and 4.2% of total kilka catch in Mazandaran Province in 2009 and 2010, respectively. Results showed that bigeye kilka catch amount has decreased and its population is under over-fishing and natural pressure. Resumen En este estudio investigamos los cambios en la población Clupeonella grimmi a causa de factores humanos y naturales en las aguas meridionales del Mar Caspio. El estudió se realizó entre el 2009 y 2010 donde se registró largo, peso y edad. La tasa de sobreviviencia annual y de mortalidad por pesca en 2009 se estimó en 0.305, 0.448 y 0.736 annual, y en el 2010 fue de 0.309, 0.419 y 0.775 respectivamente. De igual forma, la mortalidad total en el 2009 y 2010 fue de 1.184 y 1.174 annual y la tasa de explotación se calculó en 0.621 y 0.660 respectivamente. El total de captura en Mazandaran en 2009 y 2010 fue de 4.5% y 4.2%, respectivamente. Tilapia production has increased in Aguamilpa Reservoir, in Nayarit, Mexico, in the last few years and represents a good economic activity for rural communities and the country. We determined growth parameters, mortality and reproductive aspects for 2 413 specimens of blue tilapia Oreochromis aureus in this reservoir. Samples were taken monthly from July 2000 through June 2001, of which 1 371 were males and 1 042 were females. Standard length (SL) and total weight (TW) were measured in each organism. The SL/TW relationships through power models for sexes were determined. The growth parameters L ∞, k, and t0 of the von Bertalanffy equation were estimated using frequency distribution of length through ELEFAN-I computer program. Finally the reproductive cycle and size of first maturity were established using morph chromatic maturity scale. The results suggested that the males and females had negative allometric growth (bLos parámetros de crecimiento, reproducción y mortalidad de Oreochormis aureus en el embalse de Aguamilpa, México fueron determinados. Un total de 2 413 organismos se recolectaron entre julio de 2000 y junio de 2001, de los cuales 1 371 fueron machos y 1 042 hembras. Se analizó la relación longitud estándar (LE) y peso total (PT) mediante modelos potenciales. Los parámetros de crecimiento de la ecuación de von Bertalanffy fueron estimados usando la distribución de frecuencia de tallas con ayuda del programa ELEFAN-I. Finalmente se determinó el ciclo reproductivo, talla de primera madurez y fecundidad. Los resultados indicaron que tanto hembras como machos presentaron crecimiento alométrico negativo. Se encontraron diferencias significativas entre hembras y machos para la relación LE- PT sugiriendo modelos separados por sexo. No existieron diferencias significativas en el crecimiento por sexo y la tasa de explotación estimada (0.57/año) sugiere que la pesquería durante el periodo de estudio mostró signos de sobreexplotación. La tilapia azul se reproduce a lo largo del año con mayor intensidad entre enero y mayo. Por lo tanto se concluye que es necesario establecer una talla mínima de captura con base en el comportamiento reproductivo de la especie.

Se estimó la tasa mensual de mortalidad natural (M) en la fase marina de Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) y Farfantepenaeus californiensis (Holmes, 1900) en el Golfo de Tehuantepec, México. Los datos analizados fueron la captura comercial, la captura por unidad de esfuerzo (CPUE) y el esfuerzo de pesca en viajes para el camarón café (diciembre 1989 a diciembre 1998) y el camarón blanco (octubre 1992 a diciembre 1998). Los modelos basados en parámetros de crecimiento resultaron los más confiables para estimar la tasa de mortalidad natural (M). Los resultados fueron: M= 0,20 mensual para el camarón blanco y M= 0,22 mensual para el camarón café. La mortalidad por pesca (F) se incrementó de los 4 a los 16 meses de edad (F4 = 0,02 y F16 = 0,79 mensual en camarón blanco) y (F4 = 0,18 y F16 = 1,61 mensual en camarón café). Estos resultados sugieren una explotación menor del reclutamiento y mayor sobre los grupos reproductores de ambas especies. Entre 1993 y 1997, se observó una disminución de la tasa anual de explotación (E) en el camarón blanco (13,2%) y un incremento en el camarón café (14,2%). En la temporada de pesca 95/96, se observó una disminución y un aumento de las capturas de camarón blanco y camarón café, respectivamente. Esta tendencia aparentemente continúa vigente según lo reportado por el Instituto Nacional de la Pesca (INP) para la temporada de pesca 03/04 We estimated the monthly natural mortality rate (M) in the marine phase of Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) and Farfantepenaeus californiensis (Holmes, 1900) in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico. The analyzed data were the commercial capture, the capture for unit effort (CPUE) and the fishing effort in trips for the brown shrimp (December 1989 to December 1998), and the white shrimp (October 1992 to December 1998). The models based on growth parameters were the most trustworthy for estimating the natural mortality rate (M). The results were: M= 0.20 monthly for the white shrimp and M= 0.22 monthly for the brown shrimp. The fishing mortality (F) increased from the 4 to the 16 months of age (F4= 0.02 F16= 0.79 monthly in white shrimp) and (F4= 0.18 F16= 1.61 monthly in brown shrimp). These results suggest a minor exploitation of the recruitment and greater on the reproducers groups of both species. In the fishing season 95/96, a decrease and an increase was observed in the captures of white shrimp and brown shrimp, respectively. This apparent tendency still stands according to that reported by El Instituto Nacional de la Pesca (INP) for the fishing season 03/04
