International audience; Prior studies have pointed toward a link between the saccadic and vergence systems, coordinating binocular saccadic movements. Recent studies have shown that vergence deficits in children induce poor binocular coordination during saccades, but none of them have studied ocular motility in children during a daily task such as reading. The present study tests whether vergence deficits in children perturb binocular coordination of saccades and fixation during reading. Our second objective was to explore whether vergence training could improve the quality of binocular coordination. Twelve patients (from 7.3 to 13.4 years old) complaining from vertigo but without vestibular and neurological pathology underwent orthoptic tests and were selected for our study when they presented vergence deficits. Eye movements were recorded during a reading task with a Mobile EyeBrain® Tracker video-oculography system. Data were compared to twelve age-matched controls with normal orthoptic values. While there was no statistically significant difference in saccade amplitudes between the two groups (p = 0.29), patients showed higher disconjugacy during and after the saccades compared to controls (p < 0.001). After orthoptic training, six patients out of the first 12 examined came back for a second oculomotor test. All showed a significant improvement of their binocular saccade coordination. We suggest that the larger disconjugacy during reading observed in patients before training could be due to poor vergence as initially assessed by orthoptic examination. Such findings support the hypothesis of a tight relationship between the saccadic and vergence systems for controlling the binocular coordination of saccades. The improvement reported after orthoptic training is in line with the hypothesis of an adaptative interaction on a premotor level between the saccadic and vergence system.

We examined the influence of a variety of visual factors on binocular coordination during saccadic orienting. Some experimental conditions placed similar demands on the oculomotor system as those that occur during reading, but in the absence of linguistic processing. We examined whether saccade target extent, preceding saccade magnitude, preceding saccade direction, and parafoveal availability of saccade target influenced fixation disparity. Disparities similar in magnitude and frequency to those obtained in previous binocular reading experiments occurred. Saccade magnitude had a robust influence upon fixation disparities. The results are very similar to those obtained in investigations of binocular coordination during reading, and indicate that similar patterns occur during reading-like eye scanning behaviour, in the absence of linguistic processing.

Recent evidence indicates that each eye does not always fixate the same letter during reading and there has been some suggestion that processing difficulty may influence binocular coordination. We recorded binocular eye movements from children and adults reading sentences containing a word frequency manipulation. We found disparities of significant magnitude between the two eyes for all participants, with greater disparity magnitudes in children than adults. All participants made fewer crossed than uncrossed fixations. However, children made a higher proportion of crossed fixations than adults. We found no influence of word frequency on children’s fixations and on binocular coordination in adults.

Binocular coordination of the eyes during reading was examined. Fixation disparity greater than one character occurred on 47% of fixations, with the disparity being predominantly uncrossed (39%), though a small proportion of fixations were crossed. The average magnitude of disparity, measured at the end of fixation, was 1.1 characters for all fixations. For the 47% of non-aligned fixations the average magnitude of disparity was 1.9 characters. Vergence movements that reduced fixation disparity occurred during fixations, and their magnitude was positively correlated with fixation duration. Finally, eye dominance did not modulate fixation disparity magnitude or the proportion of disparate fixations.

We examined three-dimensional binocular positions in the alert and sleepy monkeys. In contrast to the tightly yoked eye movements observed in alertness, the eyes were usually converged, vertically misaligned and had a much larger torsional variability during light sleep. While in alertness eye position vectors were confined to fronto-parallel planes, the corresponding planes were rotated temporally (e.g. leftward for the left eye) in light sleep. There was no correlation between temporal rotation of the eye position planes and horizontal vergence. All these observations can be explained by randomly innervated extraocular muscles that are rotating the two eyes about anatomically determined axes.

International audience; Studies dealing with developmental aspects of binocular eye movement behavior during reading are scarce. In this study we have explored binocular strategies during reading and visual search tasks in a large population of dyslexic and typical readers. Binocular eye movements were recorded using a video-oculography system in 43 dyslexic children (aged 8-13) and in a group of 42 age-matched typical readers. The main findings are: (i) ocular motor characteristics of dyslexic children are impaired in comparison to those reported in typical children in reading task; (ii) a developmental effect exists in reading in control children, in dyslexic children the effect of development was observed only on fixation durations; and (iii) ocular motor behavior in the visual search tasks is similar for dyslexic children and for typical readers, except for the disconjugacy during and after the saccade: dyslexic children are impaired in comparison to typical children. Data reported here confirms and expands previous studies on children's reading. Both reading skills and binocular saccades coordination improve with age in typical readers. The atypical eye movement's patterns observed in dyslexic children suggest a deficiency in the visual attentional processing as well as an impairment of the ocular motor saccade and vergence systems interaction.

We studied the coordination of binocular eye movements in human subjects with alternating exotropia (divergent strabismus). Binocular saccades were recorded in six subjects during binocular and monocular viewing. Subjects were instructed to make saccades between two continuously lit targets (LED's) presented in an isovergence array (with the straight-ahead target 130 cm from the eyes) in a dimly lit room. For saccades up to 20° amplitude, there were no large differences in the dynamics of the saccades between control and exotropic subjects. However, for larger amplitudes subjects frequently alternated the eye of fixation during saccades. That is, subjects fixated the left target with the left eye and the right target with the right eye. The alternation in eye fixation at the end of the saccade was taken into account in the programming of the saccades. The amplitudes of the alternating saccades were approximately equal to the target amplitude minus the strabismus angle. We conclude that for those saccades where alternation occurs, there is not only a change in the eye of fixation, but also a change in the target representation provided by either eye. Thus, in this group of strabismic patients, saccades may be programmed in a retina-centered coordinate system, if we assume that for making a saccade to a new target in the contralateral visual field its representation on the temporal retinal field of the currently fixating eye is suppressed and the retinotopic target information is derived from the non-fixating eye. In executing the saccade, the non-fixating eye automatically becomes the fixating eye.

Reading is an activity based on complex sequences of binocular saccades and fixations. During saccades, the eyes do not move together perfectly: saccades could end with a misalignment, compromising fused vision. During fixations, small disconjugate drift can partly reduce this misalignment. We hypothesized that maintaining eye alignment during reading involves active monitoring from posterior parietal cortex (PPC); this goes against traditional views considering only downstream binocular control.Nine young adults read a text; transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was applied over the PPC every 5±0.2 sec. Eye movements were recorded binocularly with Eyelink II. Stimulation had three major effects: (1) disturbance of eye alignment during fixation; (2) increase of saccade disconjugacy leading to eye misalignment; (3) absence of eye alignment reduction during fixation drift. The effects depend on the side; the right PPC was more involved in maintaining alignment over the motor sequence.Thus, the PPC is actively involved in the control of binocular eye alignment during reading, allowing clear vision. Cortical activation during reading is related to linguistic processes and motor control per se. The study might be of interest for the understanding of deficits of binocular coordination, encountered in several populations, e.g. in children with dyslexia.

In our study, 14 subjects read 60 sentences from the Potsdam Sentence Corpus twice (viewing distance: 60 cm), while eye movements were measured with the EyeLink II. We analyzed fixation disparities for complete sentence replications (N=388). After subtracting the average fixation disparity of each sentence from each observation (which gave the “state” fixation disparity), 99% of all remaining fixation disparities were aligned, i.e. smaller than one character width (20 min arc) – depending mostly on incoming saccade amplitude and fixation position. Additionally, we measured the heterophoria for each subject during calibration and found a qualitative relationship between average, individual measures of fixation disparity (“trait” fixation disparity) and heterophoria, after dividing the sample in 3 groups of esophore, exophore and orthophore subjects. We showed that the magnitude of “trait” fixation disparity was biased by the direction of heterophoria: the more eso the heterophoria, the more eso the average sentence fixation disparity. In sum, despite a large “trait” fixation disparity (in the range of -6.6 to +33.6 min arc), “state” fixation disparities within a sentence were on average -0.9 (± 8.7) min arc and, thus, as precise as needed, i.e. within the expected extent of Panum’s area.

We investigated the effective fusional range for written stimuli in children and adults in a natural viewing situation. We recorded binocular eye movements in children and adults during processing of stereoscopically presented words in a lexical decision task. The effect of disparity magnitude on ease of fusion caused decreased response accuracy, increasing numbers of fixations and increased trial viewing times when retinal disparity exceeded one character space. The data suggest that retinal inputs of a word that are disparate by up to one character (0.37°) fall within the effective fusional range such that lexical decisions are not impaired.

Among the eye movements during fixation, the function of small saccades occuring quite commonly at fixation is still unclear. It has been reported that a substantial number of these microsaccades seem to occur in only one of the eyes. The aim of the present study is to investigate microsaccades in monocular stimulation conditions. Although this is an artificial test condition which does not occur in natural vision, this monocular presentation paradigm allows for a critical test of a presumptive monocular mechanism of saccade generation. Results in these conditions can be compared with the normal binocular stimulation mode. We checked the statistical properties of microsaccades under monocular stimulation conditions and found no indication for specific interactions for monocularly detected small saccades, which might be present if they were based on a monocular physiological activation mechanism.

Disconjugate oculomotor adaptation is driven by the need to maintain binocular vision. Since binocular vision in Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS) patients is normal in half of their horizontal field of gaze (i.e., sound-side of gaze), we wondered whether oculomotor adaptive capabilities are efficient despite such a severe impairment of eye motility towards the other half of the horizontal field of gaze (i.e., affected-side gaze). We compared properties of horizontal saccades of patients with congenital unilateral Duane Retraction Syndrome type I in binocular viewing and monocular viewing conditions by simultaneously recording both eyes with the search coil technique. Our results show a mismatch between the pulse and the step signal of the innervation for saccades. When tested in the affected eye viewing condition (sound eye covered), the eyes showed not only similarly-directed increases of the saccadic gain (pulse signal) in the two eyes but also disjunctive post-saccadic drifts (step signal). This behavior suggests that visuomotor errors presented only to the affected eye were transferred to the sound eye, producing conjugate changes of the saccadic command. The post-saccadic command remained unchanged, however, and controlled the final position of each eye separately. This suggests that monocular adaptation is possible only for the step of innervation (i.e., controlling the final eye position) but not for the pulse of innervation (i.e., controlling the saccadic gain), even though the peculiarity of unilateral DRS type I offers a clear advantage for separate pathways of control for the two eyes. ispartof: Vision Research vol:48 issue:19 pages:1972-9 ispartof: location:England status: published
