Abstract

Despite the major changes in urban middle-class Indian women’s clothing in the past 30 years, there are few accounts of women’s perspectives on their changing dress. This paper analyzes 31 semi-structured interviews with urban middle-class women in Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune to examine the changing meanings associated with saris in contemporary India. While the sari has entered the realm of global fashion and can thus be characterized as modern and sexy, the garment remains strongly associated with respect and maturity for women, particularly within their families, but also in public spaces and in the workplace. Women link their practices of sari wearing to modern aspirations by emphasizing saris as ‘modern’ fashionable attire, while simultaneously reinforcing the sari as a symbol of traditional, respectable married womanhood, thus exploiting the traditional meanings that the sari confers on them to their advantage. The emphasis on saris as simultaneously ‘modern’ and representative of Indian tradition indicates the cultural pressure placed on middle-class women to conform to dictates of traditional womanhood while also aligning themselves with modernity. Abstract

By 1979 the British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes (b. 1940) was well established and internationally renowned for her colourful hand screen-printed silk chiffon crinoline dresses. The femininity of her chiffon dresses ensured their continuation as best–sellers beyond 1979, but little has been written about her other dress designs during the 1980s. During this period Rhodes introduced new styles including her heavily beaded ‘exotic tunics’ and designer saris worn over hip panniers. Zandra Rhodes’ designs were perceived as feminine when worn by the designer herself, her models and her clientele; and represented as feminine in their portrayal in magazines and newspapers at the time. Using original records held in the Zandra Rhodes Archives, London, as well as material gathered during the Zandra Rhodes Digital Study Collection project (Jisc, 2011–2013), this article examines the period 1979–1988 within a framework of feminine representation and also considers Rhodes’ proposition that her designs are ‘works of art’. When examining our current crises, a number of philosophers would explain that most of them are part of a phenomenon whereby the world is obsessed by an economic system which is at the forefront of everything and has secured the strongest position. When examining fashion in the West, the status of women and men mirror this vision. Occidentals tend to consider all phenomena in a fragmented manner. Be it finances, economy, art, fashion, clothes-making, bodies or people, all are approached without enough connections being made. In the East, on the contrary, each area, each discipline is considered in an organic way that brings interconnections to light. After presenting fashion in the West and analyzing the place of women and their bodies in this society, I shall then explore clothing as a thematic concept in India, using the sari as a main illustration; the place of women and the articulation of their bodies in the East will therefore be examined thanks to the great contribution of Mrs. Rosenda Meer, a famous Italian lady (married to a Kashmeri man and his beautiful culture) in the world of couture for her daring assemblage of occidental and oriental clothing art and her use of the most precious fabrics.
