Increasing groundwater nitrate concentrations in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production regions have prompted the need to identify alternative nitrogen management practices. A new type of polymer-coated urea (PCU) called Environmentally Smart Nitrogen (Agrium, Inc., Calgary, AB) is significantly lower in cost than comparable PCUs, but its potential to reduce nitrate leaching and improve fertilizer recovery has not been extensively studied in potato. In 2006 and 2007, four rates of PCU applied at emergence were compared with equivalent rates of soluble N split-applied at emergence and post-hilling. Additional treatments included a 0 N control, two PCU timing treatments (applied at preplant or planting), and a soluble N fertigation simulation. Nitrate leaching, fertilizer N recovery, N use efficiency (NUE), and residual soil inorganic N were measured. Both 2006 and 2007 were low leaching years. Nitrate leaching with PCU (21.3 kg NO(3)-N ha(-1) averaged over N rates) was significantly lower than with split-applied soluble N (26.9 kg NO(3)-N ha(-1)). The soluble N fertigation treatment resulted in similar leaching as PCU at equivalent N rates. Apparent fertilizer N recovery with PCU (65% averaged over four rates) tended to be higher than split-applied soluble N (55%) at equivalent rates (p = 0.059). Residual soil N and NUE were not significantly affected by N source. Under the conditions of this study, PCU significantly reduced leaching and tended to improved N recovery over soluble N applied in two applications and resulted in similar N recovery and nitrate leaching as soluble N applied in six applications.

Phosphorus enrichment of surface water is a concern in many urban watersheds. A 3-yr study on a silt loam soil with 5% slope and high soil test P (27 mg kg(-1) Bray P1) was conducted to evaluate P fertilization and clipping management effects on P runoff from turfgrass (Poa pratensis L.) under frozen and nonfrozen conditions. Four fertilizer treatments were compared: (i) no fertilizer, (ii) nitrogen (N)+potassium (K)+0xP, (iii) N+K+1xP, and (iv) N+K+3xP. Phosphorus rates were 21.3 and 63.9 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) the first year and 7.1 and 21.3 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) the following 2 yr. Each fertilizer treatment was evaluated with clippings removed or clippings recycled back to the turf. In the first year, P runoff increased with increasing P rate and P losses were greater in runoff from frozen than nonfrozen soil. In year 2, total P runoff from the no fertilizer treatment was greater than from treatments receiving fertilizer. This was because reduced turf quality resulted in greater runoff depth from the no fertilizer treatment. In year 3, total P runoff from frozen soil and cumulative total P runoff increased with increasing P rate. Clipping management was not an important factor in any year, indicating that returning clippings does not significantly increase P runoff from turf. In the presence of N and K, P fertilization did not improve turf growth or quality in any year. Phosphorus runoff can be reduced by not applying P to high testing soils and avoiding fall applications when P is needed.

Aims: Soil microbiomes and their interactions with crop plants are important drivers of agricultural health and productivity. Our objective was to examine short-term responses of soil microbiota to agricultural management (i.e. cover cropping and nitrogen fertilization). Methods: Following three years of cropping, soil samples were collected from replicated field plots at two southern Minnesota field sites (Lamberton and Waseca). We used amplicon-based gene sequencing (ITS2 and 16S rRNA V4) to investigate short-term soil fungal and bacterial community responses to cover crops and urea-nitrogen (N) fertilization (0, 80, 100, and 120% of recommended rates) in a corn (Zea mays)-soybean (Glycine max) cropping system planted with and without cover crops. Results: We found that rates of N-fertilizer applied, more than cover crops, significantly impacted soil chemical properties at both sites. Different cropping or N fertilization treatments did not lead to strong differences in fungal or bacterial alpha (local) diversity. At both sites, cover crop was a significant predictor of fungal community compositions and specific fungal and bacterial taxa were significantly impacted by cover crops. While, N fertilization was not a strong predictor of community compositions, urea-N additions, at any rate, resulted in changes in the relative abundances of the fungal phyla Glomeromycota in addition to a number of bacterial phyla. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that after three years of cropping, fungal communities respond to cover crops, while bacterial community responses may depend on soil chemical conditions. Estimates of mineralizable N with the anaerobic potentially mineralizable N (PMNan) test could improve predictions of corn (Zea mays L.) economic optimal N rate (EONR). A study across eight US midwestern states was conducted to quantify the predictability of EONR for single and split N applications by PMNan. Treatment factors included different soil sample timings (pre-plant and V5 development stage), planting N rates (0 and 180 kg N ha-1), and incubation lengths (7, 14, and 28 d) with and without initial soil NH4--N included with PMNan. Soil was sampled (0-30 cm depth) before planting and N application and at V5 where 0 or 180 kg N ha-1 were applied at planting. Evaluating across all soils, PMNan was a weak predictor of EONR (R² ≤ 0.08; RMSE, ≥67 kg N ha-1), but the predictability improved (15%) when soils were grouped by texture. Using PMNan and initial soil NH4--N as separate explanatory variables improved EONR predictability (11-20%) in fine-textured soils only. Delaying PMNan sampling from pre-plant to V5 regardless of N fertilization improved EONR predictability by 25% in only coarse-textured soils. Increasing PMNan incubations beyond 7 d modestly improved EONR predictability (R² increased ≤0.18, and RMSE was reduced ≤7 kg N ha-1). Alone, PMNan predicts EONR poorly, and the improvements from partitioning soils by texture and including initial soil NH4--N were relatively low (R² ≤ 0.33; RMSE ≥ 68 kg N ha-1) compared with other tools for N fertilizer recommendations. Transport of nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural and urban landscapes to surface water bodies can cause adverse environmental impacts. The main objective of this long-term study was to quantify and compare contaminant transport in agricultural drainage water and urban stormwater runoff. We measured flow rate and contaminant concentration in stormwater runoff from Willmar, Minnesota, USA, and in drainage water from subsurface-drained fields with surface inlets, namely, Unfertilized and Fertilized Fields. Commercial fertilizer and turkey litter manure were applied to the Fertilized Field based on agronomic requirements. Results showed that the City Stormwater transported significantly higher loads per unit area of ammonium, total suspended solids (TSS), and total phosphorus (TP) than the Fertilized Field, but nitrate load was significantly lower. Nitrate load transport in drainage water from the Unfertilized Field was 58% of that from the Fertilized Field. Linear regression analysis indicated that a 1% increase in flow depth resulted in a 1.05% increase of TSS load from the City Stormwater, a 1.07% increase in nitrate load from the Fertilized Field, and a 1.11% increase in TP load from the Fertilized Field. This indicates an increase in concentration with a rise in flow depth, revealing that concentration variation was a significant factor influencing the dynamics of load transport. Further regression analysis showed the importance of targeting high flows to reduce contaminant transport. In conclusion, for watersheds similar to this one, management practices should be directed to load reduction of ammonium and TSS from urban areas, and nitrate from cropland while TP should be a target for both. Management of fertilizer phosphorus (P) is a critical component of potato production systems as potato has a relatively high P requirement and inefficiently uses soil P. Phosphorus promotes rapid canopy development, root cell division, tuber set, and starch synthesis. Adequate P is essential for optimizing tuber yield, solids content, nutritional quality, and resistance to some diseases. Although soil test P is the primary tool for assessing P fertilizer needs, in some areas petiole P analysis has been successfully utilized to guide in-season P applications. Potato has been shown in some studies to respond to fertilizer P at soil test levels considered very high for most other crops (100+ mg kg Bray P or Mehlich I or III and 20+ mg kg sodium bicarbonate) especially on medium- to finer-textured soils. Even on high-testing soils, fertilizer P rates for top yields sometimes exceed 150 kg PO ha. In addition, many states/provinces continue to recommend half or more of the amount of P in the harvested portion of the crop irrespective of soil test P level. In most situations, few differences are expected among fertilizer P sources; however, high rates of diammonium phosphate (DAP) or urea-phosphate (UAP) should not be band-applied in contact or near the seed piece. Most research determined that fertilizer P was most efficiently used when band-applied at planting (e.g., 5 cm to each side of the seed piece); however, some western USA work on high-pH soils showed increased yields and petiole P levels with preplant broadcast applications. In-season applications with the irrigation water can be successful when the potato roots are sufficiently close to the soil surface; however, most research indicates that P applications are more effective when applied at planting or early in the season. Potato fertilizer phosphorus best management practices include: (1) apply the fertilizer P rate calibrated for local soils; (2) band-apply fertilizer P at least 5 cm from the seed piece, especially on very sandy soils or where DAP or UAP are used; (3) use petiole P tests to determine the need for in-season applications; (4) account for all P sources applied, including animal manures; and (5) utilize the best soil conservation practices to reduce P losses to surface waters. The article presents a study that compares the soil nitrous oxide (N2) and nitric oxide (NO) emissions, yields, and N use efficiency (NUE) in corn production system in an irrigated loan sandy soil via three different N fertilizers. The study is conducted at the University of Minnesota's Sand Plain Research Farm in Becker, in which the site soil was well drained sandy, mixed, and frigid Entic Hapludoll with loamy texture. It details the result of the study in which anhydrous ammonia (AA) releases more N2O but less NO, while broadcast urea emits less of the former.

The article presents a study on the effects of nitrate leaching and indirect nitrous oxide emissions in irrigated potato production on fertilizer management. Potato is a nitrogen (N)-intensive crop with high potential for nitrate leaching contributing to water contamination and indirect nitrous oxide emissions. Approaches considered for the reduction of N losses include conventional split application (CSA) of soluble fertilizers and polymer-coated urea (PCU). The study compares leaching using CSA and two PCUs to demonstrate how more robust models are needed in accounting off-site conversion of nitrous oxide because emission factor models have higher degree of uncertainty.
