In this study, a high-performance hybrid fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (HP-HFRCC) was prepared, by mixing hooked steel fiber (HSF) and smooth steel fiber (SSF) at different blending ratios, to evaluate the synergistic effect of the blending ratio between HSF and SSF and the strain rate on the tensile properties of HP-HFRCC. The experimental results showed that the micro- and macrocrack control capacities of HP-HFRCC varied depending on the blending ratio and strain rate, and the requirement for deriving the appropriate blending ratio was confirmed. Among the HP-HFRCC specimens, the specimen mixed with HSF 1.0 vol.% and SSF 1.0 vol.% (H1.0S1.0) exhibited a significant increase in the synergistic effect on the tensile properties at the high strain rate, as SSF controlled the microcracks and HSF controlled the macrocracks. Consequently, it exhibited the highest strain rate sensitivities of tensile strength, strain capacity, and peak toughness among the specimens evaluated in this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• We studied amorphous metallic fiber length effects (15/30 mm) on cementitious composite properties. • Flexural test, tensile test and high-velocity impact tests were conducted. • Amorphous metallic fibers with lengths of 30 mm exhibited optimal responses. In this study, we examined the effects of the lengths of amorphous metallic fibers on the flexural and tensile properties and the impact resistance of cementitious composites. Cementitious composites were fabricated following the addition of 1.0 or 2.0 vol% of amorphous metallic fibers (lengths of 15 or 30 mm). After the static flexural and tensile tests, high-velocity impact tests were conducted (impact velocities of 170 and 300 m/s) with a spherical projectile (diameter of 25 mm). Amorphous metallic fibers with lengths of 30 mm inhibited the propagation of fractures based on the absorption and distribution of stress until they fractured without being pulled out, which significantly improved the flexural and tensile properties of cementitious composites; this resulted in better inhibition of scabbing in fibers with lengths of 30 mm compared to fibers with lengths of 15 mm. Meanwhile, the amorphous metallic fibers with lengths of 15 mm were pulled out from the matrix owing to their relatively smaller bonding areas compared with the 30 mm fibers. • The spalling properties were assessed for high strength concrete containing amorphous metallic fiber. • Water vapor pressure and residual axial load of high strength concrete exposed to high temperature were evaluated. • The proper dosage of amorphous metallic fiber to prevent spalling of high strength concrete was suggested. This study examined the effect of amorphous metallic (AM) fibers on the spalling properties of high-strength concrete. Nine specimens with concrete strengths of 100 MPa and 120 MPa were evaluated with mix proportions of polypropylene (PP) fibers of 0.15% and 0.25% by concrete volume, and proportions of AM fibers of 0.3% and 0.5% by concrete volume. These specimens were then heated in accordance with the ISO-834 heating curve. The movement of water vapor through a pore network formed by molten PP fibers was found to be a dominant factor controlling the spalling of high-strength concrete. Spalling control was not found to be significantly affected by the addition of 0.3% AM fibers; however, when 0.5% AM fibers was added, cracking was limited and so were paths for water vapor migration, increasing the likelihood of a moisture clog and creating the differential internal pressure often blamed for concrete spalling.
