In most of Frank Swinnerton's novels there is an architectural symmetry that inevitably delights the lover of technical excellence. The theme itself needed no such glitter and elaboration of setting, reduced to simple terms, it gives the reader, a charming, unawakened woman, married to a man who loves her but refrains for certain delicate reasons of his own from expressing the full depth of his tenderness.
