This research aims to analyse the financial performance of companies using one of the most used profitability indicators, the return on investment (ROI), which measures the company's performance in terms of the profit generated over time. To this end, several different methods are used to calculate the ROI indicator, considering the different calculation methods used by different authors over the years. The use of different ROI calculation formulas has been identified in the literature, leading to different conclusions. Based on a sample of 2805 Portuguese companies, it examines how the different indicators react to the different variables analysed, using nine different econometric models. Through this study, it is possible to verify that the different variables that depend on the return on investment have different results, namely that the variables "age" and "size" have a negative effect on the return on investment. On the other hand, "financial leverage" and "ROA" have a positive impact on the contribution to the return on investment. We also found that the different variables behave similarly for virtually all types of ROI calculation, although not completely harmonious, especially in terms of impact. The results are empirically vital, as they alert researchers and companies to the need for standardised formulas for calculating variables such as ROI so that results are not distorted. Using one to the detriment of the other impacts the results obtained and the analyses to be carried out. How empirical research will continue to use the ROI metric will always depend on its users' discretion and free will. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Companies are increasingly adopting strategies that simultaneously reduce their negative impact on the environment and minimize the extraction of natural and energy resources, used as inputs in their production process. The concern for the sustainable development of countries and regions and environmental sustainability of companies is increasingly present. Nevertheless, does it make up for the increased costs to protect the environment? The objective of this study is to evaluate how the environmental performance (EP) and the financial performance (FP) of companies are related, applying to the specific case of Portuguese companies during the 2008–2016 period. The relationship between pollution and FP reveals to be positive. Still, firms regard EP as additional costs, and these efforts do not seem to be strong enough to lead to a better FP. Both munificence and resource slack are included and reveal to have positive effects over FP and in the EP–FP relationship. Financial accounting information plays an important role in assessing and forecasting firms' financial performance. But besides that, there are other external factors affecting the performance of firms, such as economic and financial crises, which cause imbalances over the economy and affects the business environment. Thus, based on financial statements data, in this paper, the determinants of financial performance are examined, and the impact of a financial crisis on these factors is analyzed, using the fixed and random effects panel estimators. A sample of non-financial firms from European countries considering annual data for the period of 2006 to 2015 was used for this research. The results achieved by panel data analysis show that a crisis exerts a significant positive effect over financial performance as well as liquidity, assets turnover, and labor productivity, meaning that firms tend to put in greater efforts to maintain financial performance in the face of a crisis. Financial performance is significantly and negatively influenced by leverage independently of the crisis effect, showing return on assets to be lower than the average interest rate. An integrated (statistical, econometric, and economic) analysis is conducted of two relevant financial performance measures—return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE)—for 958 construction companies from eight EU countries between 2004 and 2013. The methodology can be readily applied to any country, region, or even the entire global construction sector. Findings indicate that companies fromWestern EU countries have higher ROE compared to companies from Eastern EU countries, but the latter offered higher ROA. Inverse of short-term debt has a high explanatory capacity in the long run. Investment productivity and labor productivity are also instrumental in explaining the variance of inverse of long-term debt. These findings indicate that companies should increase their productive investments when faced with a crisis. The majority of findings are consistent with recent research. The results are important for academics, investors, and managers because knowledge about variables, factors, and mutual influences allows better forecasts and better short-term and medium-term actions and strategies. This paper aims to investigate how financial variables and exogenous crises influence firms' financial performance, and how these factors may help managers in decision-making to increase their firm's wealth. The dynamic interactions among variables were studied by applying a panel vector autoregressive model using annual data for a sample of non-financial firms from European countries. Results indicate that liquidity, leverage and productivity positively affect firm performance, while solvency and asset turnover are positive and statistically significant only in the case of return on equity. Labour productivity induces that firms tend to display larger efforts to keep financial performance in face of a crisis, considering that the crisis reveals a negative statistical impact over return on assets.
