Summary: This paper proposes a simplified harmonic field‐excitation scheme for the brushless operation of wound‐rotor synchronous machines (WRSMs). The proposed scheme involves two inverters that are operating at different frequencies to provide an input current to the armature winding of the machine. One of these two inverters works at a frequency of 60 Hz and provides the regular three‐phase fundamental current, whereas the second inverter works at 180 Hz frequency to supply the single‐phase third‐harmonic to the common point of the start‐connected stator winding of the machine. The proposed method has the advantage that a conventional single‐phase inverter can be used for generating the third‐harmonic current which only needs to be operated at three times the frequency of the first inverter supplying the three‐phase fundamental current. The fundamental three‐phase current generates the main armature field, and the single‐phase third‐harmonic current produces a pulsating magnetomotive force, that induces electromotive force (EMF) in the harmonic winding of the rotor. The induced EMF is rectified to supply field current to the rotor and generates the rotor field. This field, when interacts with the main armature field, produces torque. The proposed brushless field‐excitation scheme for WRSMs is implemented in JMAG‐Designer version 19.1 using 2‐D finite element analysis to realize its operation and analyze its performance. Summary: In this paper, an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor with a D‐type rotor configuration is presented. The performance of the proposed motor is compared with that of the widely used V‐type interior permanent magnet synchronous motor. For a fair comparison, all the motor parameters are identical. With the advent of different rotor topologies, multilayered and multisegmented permanent magnets are extensively used; however, an analytical modeling of D‐type interior permanent magnet synchronous motor has not yet been conducted. Furthermore, its analysis using the finite element method is considerably time‐consuming. To resolve this problem, an analytical method based on a magnetic equivalent circuit is proposed for the slotless D‐type interior permanent magnet synchronous motor. It is then compared with the finite element method at different pole arc–pole pitch ratios to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Additionally, Schwarz‐Christoffel mapping is employed to maintain the slot shape and include the effect of adjacent slots by considering the slotting effect in the slotless air‐gap flux density. Finally, the presented motors are optimized based on the pole arc–pole pitch ratio to maximize the fundamental air‐gap flux density and minimize the total harmonic distortion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new harmonic field excitation technique for the brushless operation of wound field synchronous machines (WFSMs) is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme involves conventional three-phase and single-phase inverters operating at different frequencies and supply input current to the armature winding simultaneously. This results in a composite output current of the inverters, which contains fundamental as well as the third harmonic current components. The fundamental is utilized to develop the stator field, on the other hand, the third harmonic is used for developing the pulsating magnetomotive force (MMF) in the airgap. This MMF produces a harmonic current in the harmonic winding of the rotor which is later rectified to inject field current to the rotor field winding. This paper reports an energy-efficient permanent magnet (PM) zero-holding-energy magnetic contactor (ZMC) that consumes no energy while maintaining an open or closed state. Conventional solenoid magnetic contactor (MC) technology has several critical drawbacks, including high continuous energy consumption, continuous vibration, and low reliability. The proposed ZMC substantially reduces energy consumption and heat generation, produces no vibration, and provides increased reliability. Traditional MC analysis typically requires computationally expensive finite element analysis (FEA). To reduce the analysis costs, a recently proposed fast and accurate nonlinear transient path energy method (NT-PEM) is utilized to significantly reduce analysis time and costs. Analysis accuracy was verified experimentally using a fabricated ZMC prototype. The economic and environmental benefits of the proposed ZMC confirm its significant potential as an energy-efficient eco-friendly alternative to traditional MC technology. The characteristics analysis of an electric machine requires the finite-element method. Hence, a large amount of computation occurs in the design process to take into account uncertainties as the manufacturing tolerances. In this paper, an efficient and useful multimodal optimization algorithm using the kriging surrogate model is proposed for the robust optimization of an electric machine. However, the conventional kriging (CK) method has a memory problem in multi-dimensional problem due to the enlarged correlation matrix. Thus, a sub-domain kriging (SDK) strategy and improved Latin hypercube sampling (ILHS) are proposed not only to solve the memory problem of the CK method, but also to increase the convergence speed. In addition, a gradient-free sensitivity index is proposed for robust optimization in order to address the conventional first and second gradient index which causes a numerical error. The outstanding performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing with other optimization methods via several mathematical test functions which includes multi-dimensional problem. Design of an electric machine such as the axial flux permanent magnet synchronous motor (AFPMSM) requires a 3-D finite-element method (FEM) analysis. The AFPMSM with a 3-D FEM model involves too much time and effort to analyze. To deal with this problem, we apply a surrogate assisted multi-objective optimization (SAMOO) algorithm that can realize an accurate and well-distributed Pareto front set with a few number of function calls, and considers various design variables in the motor design process. The superior performance of the SAMOO is verified by comparing it with conventional multi-objective optimization algorithms in a test function. This paper presents a design and analysis method for a novel hybrid flux permanent-magnet (PM) machine for a high-power density. By combining radial and axial flux machines with integrated windings, the air-gap flux density is increased, and an overhang structure of the PM and additional magnetic cores are applied to increase the power density. For the analysis and design of the proposed motor, a time-consuming 3-D finite-element analysis (FEA) is required owing to its unique structure. To address this problem, a correct and rapid novel analysis method is proposed using an equivalent 2-D conversion method. An overhang structure is used to enhance the air-gap flux density and increase the torque density of a motor. In the preliminary design stage, consideration of the overhang effect is important for a precise prediction of the performance of a motor with overhang and for the selection of the proper overhang length. The 3-D finite-element method (FEM) is essential when analyzing a motor with an overhang structure due to the asymmetry in the axial direction caused by overhang. However, it is computationally expensive and time-consuming, especially during the initial design stage. In this paper, we propose a magnetic equivalent circuit model, which considers the overhang structure of a surface-mounted permanent-magnet motor. Although demand for the multi-segmented and multi-layered (MSML) interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor is high, the analytic method for this motor has not yet been proposed. The finite element method has been used in the analysis and design of the MSML IPM motor, even though it takes much time to perform. To solve this problem, the correct and rapid analytic analysis method for the MSML IPM motor is proposed in this paper. This paper presents a magnetic field analysis of a surface-mounted permanent magnet machine with an overhang structure wherein the rotor axial length exceeds that of the stator. A 2-D analytic method using a lumped magnetic circuit model (LMCM) is proposed for more rapid computation of the overhang effect compared with a conventional 3-D or quasi-3-D finite element analysis (FEA). In the LMCM, the effective overhang length is calculated, and a leakage flux generated in the overhang region is estimated. The accuracy and usefulness of the proposed analytic method is confirmed through the 3-D FEA and the experimental results according to the diverse overhang length, the number of slot/pole, and stator core length. In the two-dimensional (2-D) finite-element (FE) analysis, the overhang effect can be considered through an increase in the remanence flux density of the permanent magnet in order to reflect the increment of the air-gap flux density due to the overhang structure. However, a repetitive 2-D FE analysis was performed in order to match the air-gap flux density with it in the three-dimensional (3-D) FE analysis. When a motor is running under a load condition, it is difficult to analyze and measure the diverse types of loss occurring in the motor. To address this problem, the analysis and the measurement methods that assess the losses in a motor under a load condition are proposed in this paper. In high power density types of motors, eddy current loss is the major type of loss. A three-dimensional finite element method has been used for the analysis of the eddy current loss, which requires the much time and effort in the design process. To solve this problem, in this study we propose an analytic method that can be used for the analysis of the eddy current loss. In this paper, a hexagonal magnet shape is proposed to have an arc profile capable of reducing torque ripples resulting from cogging torque in a single-sided axial flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine. The arc-shaped permanent magnet increases the air-gap length effectively and makes the flux of the air-gap more sinusoidal, which decreases air-gap flux density and hence causes a reduction in cogging torque. Cogging torque is the basic source of vibration, along with the noise in PM machines, since it is the main cause of torque ripples. Cogging torque is independent of the load current and is proportional to the air-gap flux and the reluctance variation. Three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is used in the JMAG-Designer to analyze the performance of the conventional and proposed hexagonal-shaped PM AFPM machines. The proposed shape is designed to reduce cogging torque, and the voltage remains the same as compared to the conventional hexagonal-shaped PM machine. Further, optimization is performed by utilizing an asymmetric overhang. Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) is used to create samples, the kriging method is applied to approximate the model, and a genetic algorithm is applied to obtain the optimum parameters of the machine. This paper discusses the design and analysis of a high-harmonic injection-based field excitation scheme for the brushless operation of wound field synchronous machines (WFSMs) in order to achieve a higher efficiency. The proposed scheme involves two inverters. One of these inverters provides the three-phase fundamental-harmonic current to the armature winding, whereas the second inverter injects the single-phase high-harmonic i.e., 6th harmonic current in this case, to the neutral-point of the Y-connected armature winding. The injection of the high-harmonic current in the armature winding develops the high-harmonic magnetomotive force (MMF) in the air gap of the machine beside the fundamental. The high-harmonic MMF induces the harmonic current in the excitation winding of the rotor, whereas the fundamental MMF develops the main armature field. The harmonic current is rectified to inject the direct current (DC) into the main rotor field winding. The main armature and rotor fields, when interacting with each other, produce torque. Finite element analysis (FEA) is carried out in order to develop a 4-pole 24-slot machine and investigate it using a 6th harmonic current injection for the rotor field excitation to both attain a brushless operation and analyze its electromagnetic performance. This paper presents a new high-efficient three-phase brushless wound rotor synchronous machine (BL-WRSM) based on a sub-harmonic field excitation technique. In the proposed machine topology, the stator is equipped with two different three-phase windings: (1) main armature winding, and (2) additional armature winding. The main armature winding is based on a 4-pole winding configuration, whereas the additional armature winding is based on a 2-pole winding configuration. Both windings are supplied current from two different inverters, i.e., inverter-1, inverter-2, and simultaneously. Inverter-1 provides the regular input current to the main armature winding, whereas inverter-2 provides a three-phase current of low magnitude to the 2-pole additional armature winding. This generates an additional sub-harmonic component of MMF in the airgap beside the fundamental MMF. On the other side, the rotor is equipped with (1) harmonic, and (2) field windings. These windings are electrically coupled via a rectifier. The fundamental component of MMF produces the main rotating magnetic field, whereas the sub-harmonic MMF gets induced in the harmonic winding to produce harmonic current. This current is rectified to give DC to the rotor field winding to attain brushless operation. To authenticate the operation and analyze its performance, the proposed BL-WRSM topology is supported using 2-D finite element analysis (FEA) in JMAG-Designer. Later on, the performance of the proposed brushless topology is compared with the customary BL-WRSM topology to verify its high efficiency, high output torque, low torque ripple, and low unbalanced radial force on the rotor. In an open-winding machine, three-phase stator currents can be controlled such that the input armature currents may contain the third-harmonic current component in addition to the fundamental. Considering this attribute of open-winding patterns, a harmonic current field excitation technique for a wound rotor synchronous machine (WRSM) is proposed in this paper based on the control of time-harmonic magneto-motive force. Two inverters connected to both terminals of the stator winding are controlled so that the input armature current generates an additional third-harmonic current component. This third-harmonic component generates a vibrating magnetic field that induces a current in the specially designed rotor harmonic winding. The current is supplied as DC current to the rotor excitation winding to generate a rotor field by using a full-bridge diode rectifier in order to achieve brushless operation. The proposed dual-inverter-controlled brushless operation for a WRSM is executed in ANSYS Maxwell using 2-D finite element analysis to validate its operation and electromagnetic performance. Analysis of Halbach array placed in open space by using finite element method involves substantial consumption of memory, time, and cost. To address this problem, development of a mathematical modeling and analytic analysis method for Halbach array can be a solution, but research on this topic is currently insufficient. Therefore, a novel mathematical modeling and analytic analysis method for Halbach array in open space is proposed in this study, which is termed as the Ampere model and the Biot–Savart law (AB method). The proposed AB method can analyze the Halbach array rapidly and accurately with minimal consumption of memory.
