Simple Summary: This study describes the composition, abundance, spatial distribution and differences in day/night vertical distribution of ichthyoplankton in the southern Adriatic Sea. Samples were collected from 9 to 18 May 2013, in multiple layers from near the seabed to the surface by the electronic multinet EZ-NET BIONESS (Bedford Institute of Oceanography Net Environmental Sampling System). A total of 20 species, belonging to 20 genera and 13 families, were identified. The community was dominated by Gonostomatidae, followed by Engraulidae, Myctophidae and Photychthaidae. The most abundant species was Cyclothone braueri, followed by Engraulis encrasicolus, Ceratoscopelus maderensis, Cyclothone pygmaea, Vinciguerria attenuata and Myctophum punctatum. An inshore/offshore increasing gradient in biodiversity and abundance was observed. Different weighted mean depths (WMD) were observed for larvae and juveniles. No diel vertical migrations were observed. The high abundance of meso-bathypelagic species in the upper 100 m confirms the epipelagic zone as an important environment for the development of the larval stages of these fish. Studies based on fish early life stages can provide information on spawning grounds and nursery areas, helping to determine the implications for stock biomass fluctuations of recruitment variability. The community was dominated by Gonostomatidae, followed by Engraulidae, Myctophidae and Photychthaidae. The most abundant species was Cyclothone braueri (45.6%), followed by Engraulis encrasicolus, Ceratoscopelus maderensis, Cyclothone pygmaea, Vinciguerria attenuata and Myctophum punctatum. The spawning success of lithophilic salmonids is strongly influenced by the fine sediment content ("fines") of spawning substrates, yet knowledge on the impacts of fines on the spawning of non‐salmonid lithophiles remains limited, despite their ecological and socio‐economic importance in European rivers. Consequently, the aim here was to use an ex‐situ experiment to investigate the impact of sand content on egg survival and timing of larval emergence of the surface‐spawning cyprinid European barbel Barbus barbus. Thirty incubator boxes within a recirculating system were filled with one of five experimental sediment mixtures (0%–40% sand by mass) that each contained 300 fertilised eggs at a depth of 50 mm. Emerged, free‐swimming larvae were captured and counted daily to assess grain‐size effects on larval survival and emergence. Specifically, total proportion of emerged larvae, cumulative daily proportion of emerged larvae and time required to reach 50% emergence were measured during the study. Whilst the proportion of sand in the sediments did not have a significant impact on egg‐to‐emergence survival (mean survival per treatment 75%–79%), it significantly affected the timing of larval emergence to the water column; early emergence was detected in treatments with elevated sand content (on average, 50% emergence after 12–13 days versus 19 days in the control). Similar to findings from salmonid studies, these results suggest high sand content in spawning gravels can influence timing of larval emergence and potentially cyprinid lithophilic fish survival. Larval growth from three putative populations was estimated by microstructure analysis of otoliths of four year classes of adult herring sampled over a wide spawning season (February-June) in and around an inland brackish water lake (Landvikvannet) in southern Norway during the years 2012–2015. Mean width of daily increments at distances between 20 and 170 μm from the otolith core were significantly higher in Landvik herring (peak spawning in May) compared with the two other populations, Coastal Skagerrak spring spawners (peak spawning in March-April) and Norwegian spring spawning herring (peak spawning in February-March). These population differences were observed for all studied year classes and years and highly consistent with expected temperature dependent larval growth based on timing of successive spawning events. The observed patterns imply that timing of spawning was population specific with a tendency of adult herring to spawn at the same time and under the same conditions as they hatched themselves. This was also supported by vertebral counts, which are negatively correlated with temperatures during the embryonic stage. Firstly, Landvik herring which experienced higher ambient temperature during the embryonic stage were characterised by significantly lower counts than herring from the two other populations. Secondly, daily otolith growth also tended to decrease with increasing vertebral counts within the populations. The present study signifies the importance of otolith growth history for population discrimination in herring, even within the same spawning season, and further supports the use of vertebral counts in the continuous discussion on herring population structure, assessment and management. The addition of juveniles to marine populations (termed “recruitment”) is highly variable due to variability in the survival of fish through larval and juvenile stages. Recruitment estimates are often large or small for several years in a row (termed “autocorrelated” recruitment). Autocorrelated recruitment can be due to numerous factors, but typically is attributed to multi-year environmental drivers affecting early life survival rates. Estimating the magnitude of recruitment autocorrelation within a stock assessment model and examinations on its effect on the quality of forecasts of spawning biomass within stock assessments is uncommon. We used a simulation experiment to evaluate the estimability of autocorrelation within a stock assessment model over a range of levels of autocorrelation in recruitment deviations. The precision and accuracy of estimated autocorrelation, and the ability of an integrated age-structured stock assessment framework to forecast the dynamics of the system, were compared for scenarios where the autocorrelation parameter within the assessment was fixed at zero, fixed at its true value, internally estimated within the integrated model, or input as a fixed value determined using an external estimation procedure that computed the sample autocorrelation of estimated recruitment deviations. Internal estimates of autocorrelation were biased toward extreme values (i.e., towards 1.0 when true autocorrelation was positive and −1.0 when true autocorrelation was negative). Estimates of autocorrelation obtained from the external estimation procedure were nearly unbiased. Forecast performance was poor (i.e., true biomass outside the predictive interval for the forecasted biomass) when autocorrelation was ignored, but was non-zero in the simulation. Applying the external estimation procedure generally improved forecast performance by decreasing forecast error and improving forecast interval coverage. Simulating fish larval drift helps assess the sensitivity of recruitment variability to early life history. An individual-based model (IBM) coupled to a hydrodynamic model was used to simulate common sole larval supply from spawning areas to coastal and estuarine nursery grounds at the meta-population scale (4 assessed stocks), from the southern North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (Western Europe) on a 26-yr time series, from 1982 to 2007. The IBM allowed each particle released to be transported by currents, to grow depending on temperature, to migrate vertically depending on development stage, to die along pelagic stages or to settle on a nursery, representing the life history from spawning to metamorphosis. The model outputs were analysed to explore interannual patterns in the amounts of settled sole larvae at the population scale; they suggested: (i) a low connectivity between populations at the larval stage, (ii) a moderate influence of interannual variation in the spawning biomass, (iii) dramatic consequences of life history on the abundance of settling larvae and (iv) the effects of climate variability on the interannual variability of the larvae settlement success. Ability to quantify connectivity among spawning subpopulations and their relative contribution of recruits to the broader population is a critical fisheries management need. By combining microsatellite and age information from larval yellow perch ( Perca flavescens) collected in the Lake St. Clair - Detroit River system (SC-DRS) and western Lake Erie with a hydrodynamic backtracking approach, we quantified subpopulation structure, connectivity, and contributions of recruits to the juvenile stage in western Lake Erie during 2006-2007. After finding weak (yet stable) genetic structure between the SC-DRS and two western Lake Erie subpopulations, microsatellites also revealed measurable recruitment of SC-DRS larvae to the juvenile stage in western Lake Erie (17%-21% during 2006-2007). Consideration of precollection larval dispersal trajectories, using hydrodynamic backtracking, increased estimated contributions to 65% in 2006 and 57% in 2007. Our findings highlight the value of complementing subpopulation discrimination methods with hydrodynamic predictions of larval dispersal by revealing the SC-DRS as a source of recruits to western Lake Erie and also showing that connectivity through larval dispersal can affect the structure and dynamics of large lake fish populations. Following a short summary of the contribution of Hjort’s 1914 paper to the subsequent studies on population richness of fish species, the literature on herring larval drift and transport in the northeast Atlantic is reviewed (including the early studies contributing to the Migration Triangle hypothesis, process oriented studies in the field, and oceanographic modelling work). The review indicates that the concept of larval transport, within the context of the Migration Triangle hypothesis (which addresses the location of spawning) and the Common Pool/Adopted Migrant hypotheses (which interpret the degree of population richness of Atlantic herring), is generally supported. In contrast, analyses of the ICES large scale herring larval surveys in the Norwegian Coastal Current, the North Sea, and the shelf seas north and west of Scotland and Ireland (as well as the similar survey off southwest Nova Scotia in Atlantic Canada) indicate that there is limited displacement in the centres of distribution of different length classes of larvae. Given that larval length is a proxy for age, the analyses suggest that during the first two to three months of the larval phase the Centres of Mass (CoMs) for the progeny of the different spawning areas are relatively fixed. The results support the interpretation that location of spawning is not defined in relation to transport of larvae from the spawning area to the juvenile nursery area, but rather due to the minimisation of drift and transport (i.e. “larval retention”) at the early life history stage (as outlined in the Member/Vagrant hypothesis). The minimisation of drift and transport in the areas of spawning are interpreted as being important to the definition of the spatial scale of philopatry (and thus life cycle closure) in herring populations. Population mean egg size of salmonids increases with the mean size of gravels in which a population spawns. A long-standing hypothesis is that large larvae cannot navigate small-gravel interstices, so mothers must decrease per-offspring investment when spawning gravels are small. We manipulated the size of incubation gravels and egg size of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar) to test whether size-related entombment of larvae occurs. We find little evidence of size-related entombment, but we find evidence that gravel size does not affect all larval sizes equally. Larger larvae emerge from small gravels before development is complete and with a visible yolk sac, possibly due to oxygen limitation in small gravels. Smaller larvae always complete development in the gravel and emerge without a yolk sac. Although growth and survival may increase with juvenile size following yolk-sac absorption, juveniles with yolk sacs may fare worse when depredation rates are high. The egg size - gravel size correlation may therefore reflect increased postemergence mortality among larger offspring in small-gravel environments. Alternatively, compaction stress in fine gravels coupled with size asymmetries in larval strength may have caused the patterns that we observed, in which case our data may not help explain the egg size - gravel size correlation. Abstract: Regular weekly sampling of larvae with a Hensen net in the stationary stations on the main spawning grounds of the brackishwater herring population in the Gulf of Riga was carried out in 1947–2004. Probably due to the rapidly increasing anthropogenic eutrophication and the rising winter temperature the yearly abundance of herring larvae has significantly increased with a shift in the average abundance in 1972/1973. Correlation of the average number of herring larvae with the year-class strength was significant for the intermediate (10–16mm, P <0.05) and large (≥17mm, P <0.001) larval size groups. The monthly average air temperature in the period from January to March was the main environmental variable regulating the abundance of the year classes (P <0.001). The dependence between the spawning stock biomass (SSB) and year-class abundance differed by climate periods. In the period of cold winters environmental conditions dominated in determination of the year-class abundance whereas the role of the SSB was nonsignificant (P >0.05). In the period of milder winters the importance of the SSB in determination of the abundance of year classes considerably increased and it significantly correlated with the abundance of year classes (P <0.05). The winter–spring temperatures and other climatic variables presumably control the abundance of the forming year-class during the period of the highest larval mortality mainly via the production of their food. Most marine teleosts have a pelagic phase during their early life history, but few studies have investigated how the timing of events within the planktonic larval fish assemblage is related to environmental variability. We examined this issue using a data series of 534 larval fish samples collected between 1975 and 1987 in the Western English Channel, near Plymouth, UK. Two sets of species were identified: spring spawning (April to July) and summer spawning (July to September). The timing of appearance of the spring-spawning group in the plankton was significantly dependent on sea temperatures the previous November and December, with earlier appearance during cooler years. We suggest that this could be due to colder years triggering earlier winter migration of adults from cool inshore habitat to warmer offshore overwintering grounds, which in turn results in earlier gonad maturation and spawning. In contrast, the timing of appearance of the summer-spawning group was significantly dependent on sea temperatures the preceding March, with earlier spawning during warmer years. This may be due exclusively to more rapid gonad maturation in offshore waters. These data emphasize that marine fish populations do not always respond uniformly to temperature change. Moreover, since appropriate timing of larval fish appearance in the plankton may be critical for the match or mismatch with essential trophic resources, the thermally induced phenological changes identified have potential to influence annual recruitment success. Effects of prey concentration, light regime, and parental origin on growth and survival of herring larvae under controlled experimental conditions. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 1702–1709. Experiments were undertaken to study the combined effects of environmental (prey concentration and photoperiod) and genetic (parental spawning season) factors on growth and survival of herring larvae. During the experimental period, constant prey concentrations were maintained at one of the two nominal levels, under either a spring or an autumn light regime. Eggs of one autumn-spawning North Sea Buchan female herring were fertilized either with cryopreserved sperm from three Norwegian spring-spawning males or with fresh sperm from three Buchan males. Larvae of the two groups (the hybrids marked with alizarin) were mixed in replicated treatment tanks, thus ensuring identical environmental conditions. Mean larval growth rates were mostly influenced by food availability, but the hybrids grew significantly faster than the pure autumn-spawned offspring. In addition, the hybrids experienced a survival advantage at low prey concentrations. Hybrid survival was also somewhat better at high prey concentrations under a spring photoperiod than the corresponding group under an autumn photoperiod, suggesting a possible genetic adaptation to seasonal light conditions. The experiment documents the viability beyond first-feeding of offspring from parents with different spawning periods. The results are discussed in relation to herring metapopulation structure. 1. Patterns in abundance and distribution of larval fish in a heavily regulated and a mildly regulated Australian lowland river were compared over four breeding seasons to gain some insight into how river regulation affects fish populations. 2. Larvae from a total of 13 species from nine families were recorded from the two rivers. The mildly regulated Broken River supported twice as many species as the heavily regulated Campaspe River. The two rivers shared three introduced species but only two native species. The dominant species in the Campaspe was not found in the Broken River. 3. The two most abundant species in the Campaspe were classified as `opportunists'. They are small, short-lived species, which spawn for up to 9 months, encompassing extremes in temperature and flow. The extended spawning period may place a subset of larvae in optimal conditions for recruitment and is hypothesised as being the key to the success of these species. 4. Most species spawned each year, despite large interannual variation in flow and temperature conditions. Poor recruitment over several decades, rather than a failure to spawn, is considered the most likely explanation for differences in the larval fish faunas between the two rivers. 5. The highly regulated section of the Campaspe River downstream of the regulating impoundment is thought to provide suboptimal habitat conditions for larvae relative to the less regulated downstream sections. 6. In the Gulf of Mexico, the distribution of larval fish assemblages have been linked to continental shelf vs oceanic habitats and mesoscale structures such as cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies. Myctophids have a worldwide distribution and are one of the mesopelagic fish families with higher biomass, thus playing a key role in the trophic structure of oceanic communities. However, studies focused on their larval ecology and distribution within the gulf are limited. This study evaluated whether the formation of myctophid larval assemblages can be linked to local adult population spawning patterns and/or oceanographic conditions and surface transport. Ichthyoplankton samples were collected in August–September 2015 using standard bongo net tows. Stations extended throughout Mexico's Exclusive Economic Zone (19°N–25°N) deep water region, including the Yucatan Channel. Myctophid comprised 24.6% of the standardized total larval abundance and were present at all stations. Two dominant assemblages (out of six identified with a Bray–Curtis dissimilarity analysis) were found in stations of the central gulf and the Bay of Campeche. The high proportion of preflexion larvae coupled with differences in hydrographic parameters and surface circulation between the central gulf and the Bay of Campeche, indicated that local adult fish populations and their spawning patterns likely contribute more to the formation of these assemblages than oceanographic conditions and surface transport. Stations from the northern Yucatan Peninsula located within the region of influence of the Loop Current shared a common assemblage, which may reflect biogeographic differences in the myctophid species composition between the northern Caribbean and western gulf.
