Abstract

In the era of precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters, upcoming neutrino experiments will also be sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. KM3NeT/ORCA is a neutrino detector optimised for measuring atmospheric neutrinos from a few GeV to around 100 GeV. In this paper, the sensitivity of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector to neutrino decay has been explored. A three-flavour neutrino oscillation scenario, where the third neutrino mass state $\nu_3$ decays into an invisible state, e.g. a sterile neutrino, is considered. We find that KM3NeT/ORCA would be sensitive to invisible neutrino decays with $1/\alpha_3=\tau_3/m_3 < 180$~$\mathrm{ps/eV}$ at $90\%$ confidence level, assuming true normal ordering. Finally, the impact of neutrino decay on the precision of KM3NeT/ORCA measurements for $\theta_{23}$, $\Delta m^2_{31}$ and mass ordering have been studied. The KM3NeT/ORCA detector features an energy detection threshold which allows to collect atmospheric neutrinos to study flavour oscillation. This paper reports the KM3NeT/ORCA sensitivity to this phenomenon. The event reconstruction, selection and classification are described. The sensitivity to determine the neutrino mass ordering was evaluated and found to be 4.4 sigma if the true ordering is normal and 2.3 sigma if inverted, after 3 years of data taking. The precision to measure Delta m(32)(2) and theta(23) were also estimated and found to be 85.10(-6) eV(2) and ((+1.9)(-3.1))degrees for normal neutrino mass ordering and, 75.10(-6) eV(2) and ((+2.0)(-7.0))degrees for inverted ordering. Finally, a unitarity test of the leptonic mixing matrix by measuring the rate of tau neutrinos is described. Abstract

The aim of this research was to analyze the astronomical orientation of Greek temples and the relationship between that and the religious rituals carried out in them, using solar analysis software tools. For our case study, we chose the temple of the Parthenon. Highly practical solar analysis software tools enabled us to determine the astronomical azimuth of the building’s main longitudinal axis with a high degree of accuracy and to simulate the manner in which solar radiation was allowed to penetrate the innermost areas of the sanctuary. We also calculated the intensity of natural lighting entering the building and the time of year when this would have happened. The methodology applied in this research could be extrapolated to undertake similar analyses of other Greek temples. Introduction One of the most potent tools that the Ancient Greeks developed and exploited was solar geometry. As already widely reported by other authors, the Ancient Greeks achieved a high level of astronomical precision that allowed them to lead the development of solar architecture. Their knowledge of the path of the sun, in the different seasons of the year, allowed them to choose the most appropriate orientation when laying out new settlements and designing significant buildings [1]. In addition, their sophisticated geometric knowledge helped the Ancient Greeks to accurately determine the astronomical orientation of their sanctuaries and temples. Abstract

KM3NeT/ORCA is a dense array that constitutes the low-energy branch of the KM3NeT project with the main goal of resolving the question of the neutrino mass ordering. At present, the KM3NeT/ORCA Phase 1 has already been deployed, which means that six out of the planned 115 detection lines are operational. Even with this limited configuration, neutrino oscillations can already be measured and studied. In this contribution, the sensitivity to the neutrino Non-Standard Interactions (NSI) parameter eµt using the current stage of the KM3NeT/ORCA detector together with the projections for the final configuration are presented.

Abstract

The determination of neutrino mass ordering (NMO) is one of the prime goals of several neutrino experiments. KM3NeT/ORCA and JUNO are two next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments both aiming at addressing this question. ORCA determines the NMO by probing Earth matter effects on the oscillation of atmospheric neutrinos in the GeV energy range. JUNO, on the other hand, is sensitive to the NMO by investigating the interference effects of fast oscillations in the reactor electron antineutrino spectrum at medium baseline. This poster presents the potential of determining the NMO through a combined analysis of JUNO and ORCA data. When measuring the Δ𝑚������� 2 31 with a wrong ordering assumption, the best-fit values are different between the two experiments. This tension, together with good constraints on the Δ𝑚������� 2 31 measurement by both experiments, enhances the combined NMO sensitivity beyond the simple sum of their sensitivities. The analysis shows that 5𝜎������� significance is reachable in less than 2 years of data taking with both experiements for true normal neutrino mass ordering assuming current global best-fit values of the oscillation parameters, while 6 years will be needed for any other parameter set. Abstract

Studying atmospheric neutrino oscillations in the few-GeV range with a multimegaton detector promises to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. This is the main science goal pursued by the future KM3NeT/ORCA water Cherenkov detector in the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper, the processes that limit the obtainable resolution in both energy and direction in charged-current neutrino events in the ORCA detector are investigated. These processes include the composition of the hadronic fragmentation products, the subsequent particle propagation and the photon-sampling fraction of the detector. GEANT simulations of neutrino interactions in seawater produced by GENIE are used to study the effects in the 1 - 20 GeV range. It is found that fluctuations in the hadronic cascade in conjunction with the variation of the inelasticity y are most detrimental to the resolutions. The effect of limited photon sampling in the detector is of significantly less importance. Abstract

Purpose of the present study is to provide algorithms for and examples of how to simulate star visibility and tracking by a Telescope attached to the main truss of the International Space Station (ISS). The sky visibility of a Telescope is limited by accommodation constraints on the truss, by obstructions caused by Station’s structural elements along with other payloads, by Sun and Moon’s light and by ram atomic Oxygen. It is also limited by Station’s orbit and attitude. The above limiting agents have been modeled vis-a-vis NASA nominal specifications and knowledge of the ambient environment. These models have been used to write algorithms and to produce examples of visibility and tracking at single star level. The above analysis has been used to describe in detail how to simulate star visibility and tracking of an observing program all over the sky by a plausible wide field Telescope operated only during successive 80 days coast periods in the declination’s range −71° to 71°. Simulation is mandatory in advance of real observations. The analysis rests on the feasibility study, funded by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), of a Telescope designed for accommodation on ISS. The present visibility and tracking study enables observations planning and it is introductory to any engineering algorithm devoted to mechanically drive pointing and tracking of celestial targets from the Space Station. Since question might arise whether ISS-based Astronomy is nowadays scientifically worthwhile, a brief summary of the science rationale in Ultraviolet, useful to Astrophysics and Cosmology, is offered to the curious Astrophysicist who can decide on his own. From an operational point of view it is concluded that an observing programme can be carried out provided photon re-centering techniques are applied to the raw data, in order to free them from the effects of ISS vibrations.
