Apesar de efêmera, a rugosidade superficial no solo induzida por métodos de seu preparo é requerimento importante nos sistemas de manejo de caráter conservacionista. Isto se deve ao fato de que ela aumenta a retenção e a infiltração superficiais de água no solo, reduz a velocidade e o volume do escoamento superficial e aprisiona os sedimentos da erosão, diminuindo os danos causados pela erosão hídrica. Considerando tais aspectos, realizou-se esta pesquisa com o objetivo de avaliar as alterações ocorridas na rugosidade superficial do solo pelas ações do preparo e da chuva, na ausência e na presença de cobertura morta, em relação à erosão hídrica. O estudo foi realizado em campo, na EEA/UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul (RS), em 1996 e 1997, aplicando-se chuva simulada sobre um Argissolo Vermelho distrófico típico, de textura francoargilo- arenosa e declividade de 0,07 m m-1. Avaliaram-se os preparos de solo aração, aração e duas gradagens e sem preparo, na ausência e na presença de 60 % de cobertura por resíduo cultural, submetidos a quatro testes de chuva simulada. O primeiro teste foi constituído de uma chuva segmentada, composta de quatro porções, com durações de 20, 20, 30 e 30 min, espaçadas uma da outra de 30 a 40 min, aplicada logo após o preparo do solo. Os demais testes foram constituídos de chuvas contínuas, com duração de 90 min, aplicadas 1, 20 e 35 dias após a primeira chuva. Tais chuvas foram aplicadas com o aparelho simulador de chuva de braços rotativos, na intensidade constante de 64,0 mm h-1. A alteração na rugosidade superficial do solo causada pelo preparo foi maior do que a causada pela chuva. O maior decréscimo na rugosidade superficial do solo pela ação da chuva ocorreu já no primeiro evento, logo após o solo ter sido preparado, antes do início da enxurrada. A rugosidade superficial do solo impediu ou retardou a enxurrada nos tratamentos com solo mobilizado nos segmentos de chuva de curta duração, aplicados logo após o preparo, impedindo ou reduzindo as perdas de água e solo naquele período, independentemente da cobertura do solo. Nas chuvas contínuas subseqüentes, de longa duração, a rugosidade superficial do solo não influenciou a perda de água nos tratamentos com solo mobilizado na ausência de cobertura, sendo alta em todos eles, mas a influenciou na sua presença, diminuindoa com o aumento da rugosidade. O tratamento sem preparo permaneceu com a perda de água elevada sempre em tais chuvas. Quanto à perda de solo, nas mesmas chuvas, o efeito da rugosidade na sua redução foi mais evidente na ausência de cobertura, tendo sido substancialmente ocultado na sua presença. A cobertura morta adicionada ao solo não preservou a elevada rugosidade superficial inicialmente criada pelos preparos no solo degradado utilizado no estudo. Mesmo assim, ao final do experimento, ainda restava mais da metade da capacidade teórica inicial de retenção de água e de sedimento nas microdepressões formadas pela rugosidade. Os dados obtidos foram consistentes com teorias e conceitos usados em estudos de mecânica de erosão hídrica do solo. Although being temporary, the presence of tillage-induced surface roughness in the soil is an important requirement in conservation tillage systems. The reason is that surface roughness increases both surface retention and surface infiltration of water in the soil, reduces runoff velocity and volume, and traps eroded sediments, thus reducing water erosion damages. With this in mind, this study was developed with the objective of evaluating modifications in soil surface roughness by tillage and rainfall actions related to water erosion, in the absence and presence of mulch cover. The experiment was carried out in the field, at the Agriculture Experimental Station of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (EEA/UFRGS), in Eldorado do Sul County, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, in 1996 and 1997, using simulated rainfalls on a sandy clay loam Paleudult with 0.07 m m-1 slope steepness. The tillage types evaluated in the study included plowing, plowing plus double-disking and no-till, all them in the absence and presence of 60% soil cover (oat residue), submitted to four simulated rainfall tests. The first test consisted of a rainfall segmented in four portions, lasting for 20, 20, 30, and 30 min, separated 30 to 40 min from each other, applied immediately after tillage. The remaining tests consisted of uninterrupted rains of 90-min duration, applied 1, 20, and 35 days after the first rain. These rainfalls were applied with the rotating-boom rainfall simulator at a constant intensity of 64.0 mm h-1. Tillage caused greater changes in the soil surface roughness than rainfall. Soil surface roughness was most reduced by rain action in the very first event in recently- tilled soil, in the pre-runoff period. Soil surface roughness impeded or delayed runoff in treatments with soil mobilization in the rainfall segments with short duration applied soon after tillage, impeding or reducing water and soil losses in that period, regardless of soil cover. In the continuous, subsequent long rains, surface roughness did not influence water loss in the studied treatments without cover, where it was high throughout the experimental period, but it did reduced water loss in the presence of cover. Water loss in no-till was high for such rains throughout the experiment. Under the same rain type, soil loss reduction as influenced by roughness was more evident in the absence of cover, whereas it was substantially obscured in its presence. Mulch of crop residue added to the soil surface did not preserve the initially high surface roughness created by tillage in the degraded soil used in the study. Nevertheless, by the end of the experiment more than half of the theoretical initial water and sediment retention capacity still remained in the microdepressions formed by roughness. The obtained data were consistent with theories and concepts used in soil erosion mechanics studies.

Com o passar do tempo, a substituição da vegetação nativa por plantas cultivadas, se não devidamente planejada e conduzida, resultará em solos com capacidade produtiva diminuída e com propensão à erosão aumentada, prejudicando a produção de alimentos, a conservação do solo e da água e o ambiente como um todo. Com isso em mente, realizou-se este trabalho com o objetivo de avaliar a erosão hídrica pluvial do solo em área originalmente de campo nativo, nos seus segundo e terceiro anos de uso com culturas anuais em fileira (respectivamente feijão miúdo - Vigna unguiculata - e sorgo - Sorghum bicolor), nos métodos de preparo do solo reduzido (escarificação) e sem preparo (semeadura direta) e nos tipos de adubação mineral (NPK) e orgânica (esterco curtido de aves), além de uma condição sem adubação. O estudo foi desenvolvido em campo, na EEA/UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul (RS), nos verões de 2007/2008 e 2008/2009. Usou-se chuva simulada e um Argissolo Vermelho distrófico típico com textura franco-arenosa na camada superficial e declividade média de 0,13 m m-1. Aplicaram-se duas chuvas em cada ciclo cultural, a primeira logo após a implantação dos tratamentos e semeadura das culturas e a segunda cerca de noventa dias mais tarde (estádio fenológico de enchimento de legumes no caso do feijão miúdo e de maturação no do sorgo). Para isso, utilizou-se o aparelho simulador de chuva de braços rotativos, com as chuvas tendo sido aplicadas na intensidade constante planejada de 64 mm h-1 e com duração de 1,5 h cada uma. Avaliaram-se atributos de solo e planta nas parcelas experimentais e de erosão hídrica no escoamento superficial. Observou-se que a mudança no tipo de uso da terra, no tempo e modo feitos na pesquisa, diminuiu a densidade do solo e aumentou a macroporosidade e a porosidade total, ao mesmo tempo em que, excetuando a condição sem adubação, não causou perdas relevantes de solo e água por erosão hídrica. A mobilização do solo pela escarificação, na maior parte dos casos, favoreceu a infiltração e a retenção superficial da água da chuva e, em decorrência, diminuiu sua perda na forma de enxurrada, ao mesmo tempo em que satisfatoriamente controlou a perda de solo por erosão. A ausência de mobilização do solo na semeadura direta, também na maior parte dos casos, induziu a formação de maior enxurrada, mas em compensação controlou melhor a erosão. Comparadas à condição sem adubação, a adubação mineral e a adubação orgânica ambas contribuíram para reduzir a erosão e a enxurrada nos dois métodos de preparo do solo usados no estudo, com as diferenças entre si tendo sido inconstantes. Over time, the substitution of the native vegetation by cultivated plants, if not properly planned and conducted, will result in soils with reduced productivity capacity and with increased susceptibility to erosion, impairing the food production, the soil and water conservation, and the environment as a whole. With that in mind, this research work was carried out with the objective of evaluating the soil erosion by rainfall in an area originally with native pasture, in its second and third years of use with annual row crops (respectively cowpea - Vigna unguiculata - and sorghum - Sorghum bicolor), in the reduced (chiseling) and the without (direct seeding) soil tillage methods and in the mineral and the organic fertilization types, besides a condition without fertilization. The study was developed in the field, at the Agriculture Experimental Station of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (EEA/UFRGS), in Eldorado do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, in the summers of 2007/2008 and 2008/2009. Simulated rainfall and an Ultisol with a sandy loam texture in the surface layer and 0.13 m m-1 average slope steepness were used in the study. Two rains were applied in each crop cycle, the first immediately after treatments establishment and crops seeding and the second one about ninety days later (fulfillment of legumes in the case of cowpea and maturation of the sorghum cropstages). To accomplish that, the rotating boom rainfall simulator was used, with the rains having being applied at the designed, constant rainfall intensity of 64.0 mm h-1 and with 1.5 h duration each. Attributes of soil and plants were measured in the experimental plots, and of water erosion in the surface runoff. It was observed that the change in the type of land use, in the time and the way it was done in the research, diminished the soil bulk density and increased both the macroporosity and the total porosity, at the same time that, excluding the condition without fertilization, did not cause relevant soil and water losses by rainfall erosion. The mobilization of the soil by chiseling, in the majority of the cases, favored the infiltration and the retention of the rainfall water in the soil surface and, as consequence, diminished its loss in the form of surface runoff, at the same time that satisfactorily controlled the soil loss by erosion. The absence of soil mobilization in the direct seeding, also in the majority of the cases, induced the formation of greater surface runoff, but in compensation controlled the erosion better. Compared to the condition without fertilization, the mineral and the organic fertilization both contributed for reducing erosion and runoff in the two soil tillage methods used in the study, with the differences between them having being inconstant.

A erosão acelerada constitui a forma mais extensiva e preocupante de degradação do solo. Por este processo, o solo pode ser removido do seu local original em quantidades grandes em um espaço de tempo infinitesimalmente pequeno, comparado ao tempo necessário para sua reposição pelos meios naturais. Com isto em mente, realizou-se este trabalho de pesquisa com o objetivo de restaurar a estrutura de um solo degradado e, mais tarde, verificar sua relação com a erosão hídrica pluvial. O estudo foi desenvolvido na EEA/UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul, RS, de maio de 2004 a dezembro de 2007, utilizando-se chuva artificial e um Argissolo Vermelho Distrófico típico com 0,115 m m-1 de declividade média. Os tratamentos consistiram de seqüências culturais formadas por espécies de gramínea e leguminosa de outono-inverno e de primavera-verão, cultivadas nas formas isolada e consorciada, pelo método de semeadura direta, as quais, após 3,5 anos de vigência, foram testadas contra a erosão hídrica pluvial nas seguintes condições físicas instantâneas da superfície do solo: solo não-mobilizado e recém-mobilizado, presença e ausência de crosta e nenhuma, pouca e completa cobertura por resíduos culturais. As chuvas foram aplicadas com o aparelho simulador de braços rotativos, na intensidade constante de 64,0 mm h-1 e com duração de 1 a 3 horas cada uma. Avaliaram-se parâmetros de planta, solo e erosão, os quais foram analisados de forma individual e inter-relacionada, usando-se análise estatística da variância e de regressão. Observou-se que ao redor de 50% das situações examinadas resultaram estatisticamente significativas e 50% nãosignificativas, com as respostas em cada uma delas, entretanto, tendo ocorrido dentro e fora do esperado. Assim, ocasionalmente as seqüências culturais se diferenciaram estatisticamente em relação tanto às produções de biomassa aérea e biomassa subterrânea quanto aos valores das variáveis de manejo do solo e erosão hídrica medidas em cada uma delas, mas sem regularidade quanto à ordem de ocorrência das significâncias, tanto nas épocas de avaliação e camadas de solo, quanto nos testes de erosão, com as variáveis de erosão hídrica tendo sido bem mais afetadas por estes últimos do que pelas seqüências culturais. Mesmo assim, foi possível verificar que a seqüência cultural com teosinto, seguida das com milho+feijão miúdo e milheto, em geral foram as que melhor restauraram a estrutura do solo e mais reduziram a erosão, embora todas as seqüências culturais tivessem sido hábeis e relativamente rápidas na recomposição do solo. Também em geral, mostraramse indicadores promissores de qualidade do solo para fins de infiltração de água e redução da erosão hídrica a quantidade de raízes, a macroporosidade do solo, o diâmetro médio ponderado de agregados do solo em água e a percentagem de estabilidade em água de agregados do solo >0,5 mm. The man-induced or acelerated erosion constitutes the most extensive and worrying form of soil degradation. By this process, the soil can be removed from its original place in amounts really large in a period of time infinitesimally small, compared to the time needed for its reposition by natural means. With that in mind, this research work was accomplished with the objective of restoring the structure of a degraded soil and, later, verifying its relation with rainfall erosion. The study was developed at the EEA/UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, from May, 2004 to December, 2007, using artificial rain and a sandy clay loam Ultisol with 0.115 m m-1 average slope steepness. Treatments consisted of no-till planted, grass and legume, Fall- Winter and Spring-Summer seasoned crop sequences, singly and intermixed cropped, which, after 3.5 years of being established, were tested against rainfall erosion in the following, instantaneous physical conditions of the soil surface: non-mobilized and freshly-mobilized soil, presence and absence of crust, and none, small, and full coverage by crop residues. Rains were applied with the rotating-boom rainfall simulator, at 64.0 mm h-1 constant, rainfall intensity and with 1 to 3 hours duration each. Plant, soil, and erosion parameters were evaluated and both individually and in the inter-related form analized, using variance and regression statistical analysis. It was observed that about 50% of the examined situations turned out estatistically significant and 50% nonsignificant, with the responses in each one of them, however, having occurred within and way off the expected behavior. Therefore, occasionally statistical differences between crop sequences were found in relation to both production of aboveground and underground biomass and values of the soil management and water erosion variables measured in each one of them, but, without regularity with respect to the order of the occurrence of significances, either in the evaluation dates and soil layers or in the erosion tests, with the water erosion variables being affected much more by these latter than by the crop sequences. Nevertheless, it was possible to verify that the crop sequence with teosinte, followed by the ones with corn+cowpea and pearl millet, were in general the ones that better restored the soil structure and more reduced erosion, even though all the crop sequences were able and relatively fast in recomposing the soil. In addition, the amount of underground biomass or plant roots, the soil macroporosity, the mean weight diameter of water-stable soil aggregates, and the percentage of stability in water of the soil aggregates larger than 0.5 mm, showed to be generally promising soil quality indicators for the purposes of water infiltration and rainfall erosion reduction.

O conhecimento aprimorado do fenômeno da erosão é de fundamental importância no monitoramento da inter-relação sistemas de manejo do solo - sustentatibilidade de agroecossistemas. Com isso em mente, desenvolveu-se um estudo em campo, na EEA/UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul, RS, entre maio de 2000 e abril de 2004, com o objetivo de quantificar as perdas de solo e água por erosão hídrica em diferentes formas de manejo do solo, com vistas à identificação de indicadores físicos de qualidade para redução da erosão hídrica e do escoamento superficial e à investigação de valores dos coeficientes das variáveis do subfator PLU (uso anterior da terra) do modelo RUSLE de predição da erosão. Para isso, aplicou-se chuva simulada sobre um Argissolo Vermelho com textura superficial franco argilo arenosa e declividade média de 0,12 m m-1, cultivado em semeadura direta por diferentes períodos com diferentes seqüências culturais, e exibindo diferentes condições físicas na camada superficial: superfície não-mobilizada, com e sem cobertura por resíduo cultural, e superfície mobilizada, sem cobertura por resíduo cultural. Realizaram-se sete testes de chuva simulada, num período de seis meses, utilizando o simulador de chuva de braços rotativos, todos eles na intensidade constante de chuva de 64 mm h-1 e duração de 1,5 h. As diferentes seqüências culturais promoveram diferentes condições físicas na camada superficial do solo, traduzidas pelos diferentes valores das características físicas de superfície e subsuperfície avaliadas, antes e após o preparo, o que se refletiu em diferentes respostas da erosão e do escoamento superficial. A perda de água foi a mais elevada no solo não mobilizado, mesmo com elevada cobertura superficial, e foi a mais baixa no solo recém-mobilizado, sem cobertura superficial. A perda de solo foi a mais baixa no solo não-mobilizado, com elevada cobertura superficial, acompanhada de perto pela perda tanto do solo não-mobilizado quanto do recém-mobilizado, ambos sem cobertura superficial, aumentando na medida em que o solo era repetidamente preparado, contudo. A massa de raízes mortas das culturas, o diâmetro médio ponderado (DMP) dos agregados de solo em água e o índice de rugosidade superficial do solo (IR) mostraram-se bons indicadores de qualidade para redução da perda total de água em todas as condições físicas estudadas da camada superficial do solo, e muito bons indicadores para redução da perda total de solo - exceto a condição com elevada cobertura superficial, na qual o efeito das referidas variáveis foi irrelevante. Os valores encontrados para o coeficiente c da variável massa de raízes do subfator PLU do modelo RUSLE ficaram na faixa reportada na literatura. Full knowledge of the erosion phenomenon is fundamental for monitoring the interrelation soil management systems – agroecossystems sustainability. Considering this, a field study was developed at the EEA/UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between May, 2000 and April, 2004, with the objective of quantifying soil and water losses caused by rainfall erosion under different forms of soil management, in order to identify physical indicators of quality for reducing water erosion and surface runoff, as well as to investigate coefficient values for the variables associated with the PLU (prior land use) sub-factor in the RUSLE’s erosion prediction model. To accomplish this, simulated rainfall was applied on a typical, sandy clay loam, Paleudult soil, having 0.12 m m-1 average slope-steepness, cultivated in no till by different periods of time with different crop sequences, and exhibiting different physical conditions in the surface layer: consolidated soil surface, with and without crop residue on it, and freshly-tilled soil surface, without crop residue on it. Seven simulated rainfall, erosion tests were run within a period of six months, all of them under 64.0 mm h-1 rainfall intensity and for 1.5-hr rainfall duration. The different crop sequences promoted different soil physical conditions in the surface layer, translated by the different values of the evaluated surface and subsurface soil physical characteristics, before and after tillage, which differently affected erosion and surface runoff. Water loss was highest in the untilled soil surface, regardless of residue cover on it, and lowest in the freshly-tilled soil surface, even though without crop residue on it, and it was kept this way until the end of the experiment. Soil loss was lowest in the untilled, covered soil surface, followed closely by either untilled or freshly-tilled soil surfaces, both without crop residue on it, but it substantially increased as subsequent tillage operations were performed. Crop dead roots mass, meanweight- diameter (MWD) of soil aggregates in water, and soil surface-roughness index (IR) showed to be good indicators of quality for reducing water loss in all of the studied surface soil layer’s physical conditions, and very good indicators for reducing soil loss - except the condition with high residue cover on it, in which the effect of the referred variables was irrelevant. The values obtained for the c-coefficient associated with the crop root mass variable in the PLU subfactor of RUSLE’s erosion prediction model stayed within the range reported in the literature.
