Asymmetric low-energy fission of neutron-deficient nuclei around lead is addressed with the measurement of fragment mass and total kinetic energy properties for the fissioning system $^{198}\mathrm{Po}$ produced in heavy-ion fusion. Interpretation of the measurement for such a transitional nucleus at finite excitation energy is challenging. The presence of asymmetric partitions is suggested by the observed weak dependence of the total kinetic energy on mass and by the nonmonotonic evolution of the fragment-mass distribution width with excitation energy. The interpretation is supported by microscopic model calculations as well as by the results of an advanced semiempirical code. Combined with previous experiments in the region, the present measurement contributes to establish the evolution of the fragment-mass distribution as a function of the fissioning system. The connection between the ``new'' and the ``old'' islands of asymmetric fission is discussed.

Neutron angular distributions in spontaneous fission of 252Cf are investigated. The CORA experiment, performed at IPHC Strasbourg, aims at elucidating neutron emission mechanisms in the fission process. The experimental setup is composed of the angle-sensitive twin ionisation chamber CODIS for the detection of fission fragments and the DEMON neutron detector assembly. The development of a simulation toolkit based on GEANT4 and MENATE_R is described, adapted as a strategy to investigate the influence of experimental conditions on the observed properties of neutrons emitted. Besides the kinematic neutron anisotropy in the laboratory system due to neutron evaporation from moving fragments, two additional effects are discussed which may have an influence on the angular distributions of neutrons: scission neutrons and dynamic neutron emission anisotropy in the CM system of fragments due to the spin carried by fragments. A new analysis method is presented to disentangle the dynamic anisotropy from the other effects in an independent way. For the dynamic anisotropy only an upper limit could be found. Results for the angular correlation $ (\mathrm{n},\mathrm{n})$ between two evaporated neutrons and the correlation $ (\mathrm{n},\mathrm{LF})$ between an evaporated neutron and the Light Fragment direction of flight are reported.

An experiment has been performed at IPHC Strasbourg, aimed at the detailed investigation of angular correlations in the neutron emission from spontaneous fission of 252Cf. Fission fragments were measured by the angle-sensitive double ionization chamber CODIS while neutrons were detected by a set of 60 DEMON scintillator counters. The main aim of the experiment is the observation of the correlation between the fragment spins and neutron emission anisotropy. Preliminary results, based on the Monte-Carlo simulations, as well as the preliminary analysis of the experimental data are shown.

An experiment aiming at the detailed investigation of angular correlations in the neutron emission from spontaneous fission of 252Cf has been performed at IPHC Strasbourg using the angle-sensitive double ionization chamber CODIS for measuring fission fragments and a set of 60 DEMON scintillator counters for neutron detection. The main aim of the experiment is to search for an anisotropy of neutron emission in the center-of-mass system of the fragments. Experimental neutron distributions have been investigated in the spontaneous fission of 252Cf at IPHC in Strasbourg. The CORA experiment associating the CODIS twin ionisation chamber and the neutron multi-detector DEMON aimed to solve an long-standing problem in fission: the possible emission of scission neutrons and/or the presence of a dynamical anisotropy in the neutron evaporation by the moving fission fragments. A new method allowing to establish the dynamical anisotropy in an independent way is presented. Independent fission fragment yields have been obtained for the six fragment pairs ( Z L/Z H = 44/46 , 42/48, 40/50, 38/52, 36/54 and 34/56) in 208Pb(18O, f ) at the beam energy E = 85 MeV. γ -ray spectroscopy technique was applied to analyze the experimental data. With use of these data the mass distribution of fission fragments was restored. Data on average fragment spin distribution and total neutron multiplicity are presented. The agreement of the obtained results with other experimental data proves the validity of the applied method to solve this kind of problems.

We analyzed the experimental data of the pre-scission neutron multiplicity in connection with fission fragments in the reaction $^{58}$Ni+$^{208}$Pb at the incident energy corresponding to the excitation energy of compound nucleus $E^{*}$=185.9 MeV, which was performed by D\'{e}MoN group. The relation between the pre-scission neutron multiplicity and each reaction process having different reaction time is investigated. In order to study the fusion-fission process accompanied by neutron emission, the fluctuation-dissipation model combined with a statistical model is employed. It is found that the fusion-fission process and the quasi-fission process are clearly distinguished in correlation with the pre-scission neutron multiplicity., Comment: 11 figures

We discuss thc fusion-fission process in superheavy mass region. By analyzing the mass distribution of fission fragments, we can distinguish between fusion-fission process and quasi-fission process. We investigate these two processes using the fluctuation-dissipation model. In the dynamical calculation, we employ the three-dimensional Langevin equation. We find 90 ∼ 99% of mass symmetric fission events come from the quasi-fission process in the superheavy mass region. In order to classify the fusion-fission process more precisely. we analyze the pre-scission neutron multiplicity. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We have studied mass-energy distributions (MED) of fission fragments using two projectile-target combinations, 12C + 204Pb and 48Ca + 168Er, leading to the same compound nucleus 216Ra at the excitation energy E*∼40 MeV. It has been found that the contribution of the asymmetric mode in the case of the former reaction is 1.5%, and it is 30% in the case of the latter one. We connect such a sharp increase in the yield of asymmetric products in the 48Ca + 168Er reaction with the quasifission process, the MED of which have a clearly expressed shell structure. The characteristics of the fission fragment MED are of such a kind that they can be interpreted by analogy with the low-energy fission of heavy nuclei as a manifestation of an independent mode of nuclear decay which competes with the classical fusion-fission process.

Background: In heavy-ion-induced reactions the mechanism leading to the formation of the compound nucleus and the role of quasifission is still not clear.Purpose: Investigation of the quasifission process of superheavy composite systems with $Z=110\text{\ensuremath{-}}116$ and comparison with properties of fusion-fission and quasifission of lighter composite systems.Method: Mass and energy distributions of fissionlike fragments formed in the reactions $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}+^{232}\mathrm{Th}$, ${}^{238}\mathrm{U}$, ${}^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$, and ${}^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$ at energies near the Coulomb barrier have been measured using the double-arm time-of-flight spectrometer CORSET at the U-400 cyclotron of the FLNR JINR.Results: The most probable fragment masses as well as total kinetic energies and their dispersions in dependence on the interaction energies and ion-target combinations have been studied for asymmetric and symmetric fragments formed in the reactions. The capture cross sections were obtained for the reactions $^{48}\mathrm{Ca}+^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$ and ${}^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$. The lower limits for fission barriers of ${}^{283\ensuremath{-}286}\mathrm{Cn}$, ${}^{289\ensuremath{-}292}\mathrm{Fl}$, and ${}^{293\ensuremath{-}296}\mathrm{Lv}$ compound nuclei were estimated.Conclusions: Analysis of the properties of symmetric fragments has shown that a significant part of these fragments may be attributed to fusion-fission process for the reactions ${}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}{+}^{238}\mathrm{U}$, ${}^{244}\mathrm{Pu}$, and ${}^{248}\mathrm{Cm}$.

The neutron multidetector DeMoN has been used to investigate the symmetric splitting dynamics in the reactions 58,64 Ni + 208 Pb with excitation energies ranging from 65 to 186 MeV for the composite system. An analysis based on the new backtracing technique has been applied on the neutron data to determine the two-dimensional correlations between the parent composite system initial thermal energy (ECNth) and the total neutron multiplicity (νtot), and between pre- and post-scission neutron multiplicities (νpre and νpost, respectively). The νpre distribution shape indicates the possible coexistence of fast-fission and fusion-fission for the system 58 Ni + 208 Pb (Ebeam = 8.86 A MeV). The analysis of the neutron multiplicities in the framework of the combined dynamical statistical model (CDSM) gives a reduced friction coefficient β = 23 ± 1225 × 1021 s−1, above the one-body dissipation limit. The corresponding fission time is τf = 40 ± 2046 × 10−21s.

The talk presents the results of an investigation of the main characteristics (mass and energy distributions of fission fragments and multiplicity of neutrons) of the fission of the nuclei of 220 Ra, 226 Th, 256 No, 270 Sg, 286 112 produced in reactions with ions of 18 O, 22 Ne and 48 Ca at energies close to and essentially below the Coulomb barrier. The data obtained show that the form of the mass and energy distributions of the fission fragments of 226 Th and 270 Sg is accounted for by the multimodal nature of the fission. In addition, for 226 Th, a new phenomenon was established there is a significant difference between the numbers of prescission neutrons for symmetric and asymmetric fission modes. It was found that, for the low-energy fission of the nucleus of 286 112, the mass distribution of the fragments is of a clear-cut asymmetric form, contrary to what is observed for the spotaneous fission of the nuclei with Z = 100–104 and for the induced fission of 270 Sg.

Mass and energy distributions of binary reaction products obtained in the reactions {sup 22}Ne+{sup 249}Cf,{sup 26}Mg+{sup 248}Cm, {sup 36}S+{sup 238}U, and {sup 58}Fe+{sup 208}Pb have been measured. All reactions lead to Hs isotopes. At energies below the Coulomb barrier the bimodal fission of Hs{sup *}, formed in the reaction {sup 26}Mg+{sup 248}Cm, is observed. In the reaction {sup 36}S+{sup 238}U, leading to the formation of a similar compound nucleus, the main part of the symmetric fragments arises from the quasifission process. At energies above the Coulomb barrier fusion-fission is the main process leading to the formation of symmetric fragments for both reactions with Mg and S ions. In the case of the {sup 58}Fe+{sup 208}Pb reaction the quasifission process dominates at all measured energies.

A new detector system dedicated for very/super heavy elements (VHE/SHE) detection that decay by spontaneous fission is presented. Such a decay mode of nuclei can be found e.g. in the region of Z ≈100 (Fermium). Future experiments realized in the frame of French-Polish collaboration at the cyclotrons in GANIL and in the Heavy Ion Laboratory (HIL), University of Warsaw, is described. The results of test measurements made in the HIL for reactions 20 Ne (8 A . MeV )+120 Sn , 179 Au are presented.

Mass, energy and folding angle distributions of the fission fragments as well as multiplicities of neutron and gamma‐quanta emissions accompanying the fission process were measured for fission of 226Th, 227Pa and 234Pu compound nuclei produced in reactions with 18O and 26Mg projectiles over a wide energy range. Data were analyzed with respect to the presence of fission modes. Asymmetric fission was observed even at very high initial excitation for all the measured systems. The so‐called fission mode S1 (caused by the proton shell Z∼50 and neutron shell N∼82 in heavy fragment) was found to be dominant in asymmetric fission of 234Pu. Reactions with not full linear momentum transfer were observed in the folding spectra for all the measured systems.

With the aid of the Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation package a new detection system has been designed for the focal plane of the recoil separator VASSILISSA situated at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, JINR, Dubna. GABRIELA (Gamma Alpha Beta Recoil Investigations with the Electromagnetic Analyser VASSILISSA) has been optimised to detect the arrival of reaction products and their subsequent radioactive decays involving the emission of alpha- and beta-particles, fission fragments, gamma- and X-rays, and conversion electrons. The interest in the study of the fission process of superheavy nuclei mainly deals with the opportunity to obtain information about the cross-section of the compound nucleus (CN) formation at excitation energies E*\approx 15–30 MeV. It allows one to estimate the survival probability of the superheavy composite system after evaporation of 1–3 neutrons, i.e. in "cold" or "warm" fusion reactions. However, in order to solve this problem deeper understanding of the coalescence processes between colliding nuclei, the competition between fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes is needed. The characteristics of both processes, their manifestation in the experimental observables and the relative contribution to the capture cross-section in dependence on the excitation energies, reaction entrance channel etc were investigated for a wide range of target-projectile combinations. Results of the experiments devoted to the study of the fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes in the reactions of the formation of the superheavy nuclei with Z = 102–122 are presented. The heavy ions 26Mg, 48Ca, 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni were used as projectiles. The choice of the reactions with 48Ca and actinide-targets was inspired by the experiments on the production of the isotopes 283112, 289114 and 283116 in Dubna using the same reactions. The 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni projectiles were chosen since the corresponding projectile-target combinations lead to the synthesis of even heavier elements. The experiments were carried out at the U-400 accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR, Russia) and the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro (LNL, Italy) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET. The role of the shell effects, the influence of the entrance channel asymmetry and the deformations of colliding nuclei on the mechanism of the fusion-fission and the competitive process of quasi-fission are discussed. The recent results on synthesis of superheavy nuclei and the perspectives of the "hot" fusion reaction for the production of superheavy nuclei are considered.

Results of the experiments aimed at the study of fission and quasi‐fission processes in the reactions 12C+204Pb, 48Ca+144,154Sm, 168Er, 208Pb, 238U, 244Pu, 248Cm; 58Fe+208Pb, 244Pu, 248Cm, and 64Ni+186W, 242Pu are presented. Nuclear dissipation in capture reactions is investigated using backtracing. Combining the analysis procedure with dynamical models, the difficult and long-standing problem of competition and mixing of quasi-fission and fusion-fission is solved for the first time. At low excitation energy a new protocol able to handle low statistics data gives access to the prescission neutron multiplicity in two different systems 48 Ca +208 Pb, Pu . The results are in agreement with a domination of fusion-fission in the case of 256 No and an equal mixing of quasi-fission and fusion-fission in the case of Z=114. The nature of the relevant dissipation is determined as one-body dissipation.

We have studied the mass and energy distributions of fission fragments from the two reactions ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}{+}^{204}\mathrm{Pb}$ and ${}^{48}\mathrm{Ca}{+}^{168}\mathrm{Er}$ that lead to the same compound nucleus ${}^{216}{\mathrm{Ra}}^{*}.$ Despite the fact that the excitation energy was around 40 MeV in both cases, the contribution from asymmetric fission in the first reaction is only around 1.5% but is about 30% in the second. This marked increase in the yield of asymmetric products is connected to the quasifission process, in which important shell effects become evident. The mass-energy distributions are interpreted in terms of an independent decay mode competing with the normal fusion-fission process and possibly leading to a significant suppression of the fusion cross section itself.

Near-barrier excitation functions have been measured for evaporation-residue production and fission in the 12C + 204,206,208Pb and 48Ca + 168,170Er systems that lead to the compound nuclei 216,218,220Ra*. A Pronounced suppression of evaporation-residue production is observed for the more symmetric combinations, 48Ca + 168,170Er. We relate this to the significant quasifission components already observed for these systems.

Experimental neutron angular distributions are investigated in the spontaneous fission process of 252Cf. The CORA experiment, presented in this paper, has the aim to study neutron angular correlations in order to elucidate the neutron emission mechanisms in the fission process. Spallation neutron production in proton induced reactions on Al, Fe, Zr, W, Pb and Th targets at 1.2 GeV and on Fe and Pb at 0.8, and 1.6 GeV measured at the SATURNE accelerator in Saclay is reported. The experimental double-differential cross-sections are compared with calculations performed with different intra-nuclear cascade models implemented in high energy transport codes. The broad angular coverage also allowed the determination of average neutron multiplicities above 2 MeV. Deficiencies in some of the models commonly used for applications are pointed out., 20 pages, 32 figures, revised version, accepted fpr publication in Phys. Rev. C

Results of fission fragment mass-energy distributions of the compound ${}^{226}\mathrm{Th}$ nucleus formed in the sub-barrier fusion reaction ${}^{18}\mathrm{O}{+}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}$ at an energy of ${}^{18}\mathrm{O}$ ions ${E}_{\mathrm{lab}}=78$ MeV are reported. The reaction has been studied twice using two different accelerators, and both sets of experimental data agree quite well. Performed analysis of the experimental data with the use of a new multicomponent method has shown that alongside the well-known modes, i.e., the symmetric (S) and two asymmetric modes standard-one and standard-two, a high-energy mode standard-three has manifested itself. The last named mode appears due to the influence of the close-to-sphere neutron shell with $N\ensuremath{\approx}50$ in the light fission fragment group. Theoretical calculations of the prescission shapes of the fissioning nuclei ${}^{224,226}\mathrm{Th}$ confirm this conclusion.

The neutron spectra associated to the two fission modes of Th-226 have been measured in coincidence with the fragment yields of the O-18 + Pb-208 reaction at E-lab = 78 MeV. The pre- and post-fission multiplicities and temperatures have been extracted. Surprisingly, the prefission neutron multiplicities associated with the asymmetric mode are larger than those associated with the symmetric mode.
