In this work, we investigated non-equilibrium plasma produced by nanosecond repetitively pulsed glow discharges applied across a lean premixed methane-air flame. The flame is stationary, axisymmetric, and laminar. The discharges are applied on the symmetry axis crossing the reactant gases, flame front, and product gases, allowing phase-locked averaged measurements and comparisons with axisymmetric numerical simulations. The thermal effect and methyl radical production are quantified in the discharge in the reactant gas region. One-dimensional, two-beam, hybrid, femtosecond-picosecond, coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering is used to acquire spatial and temporal profiles of temperature and oxygen-to-nitrogen concentration ratio. Photo-fragmentation laser-induced fluorescence is used to acquire quantitative two-dimensional profiles of methyl radicals in the discharge providing the first quantitative imaging of methyl produced ahead of a flame by plasma-induced methane dissociation. The spatial profiles of temperature and oxygen-to-nitrogen concentration ratio are in steady state, indicating that individual discharges have an insignificant heating effect. Upper and lower bounds of the produced mole fraction of methyl radicals in the plasma are obtained due to uncertainties in the collisional quenching rates of excited state methylidyne radicals in the plasma. The discharges produce a maximum of 600–1100 ppm of methyl radicals upstream of the flame front within 25 ns. This amount is similar to the predicted methyl mole fraction for the flame without plasma and thus represents a significant chemical perturbation to the reactants upstream of the flame front. The produced methyl follows an exponential decay in the first microsecond after the discharge with a decay constant of 8 µs close to the flame, and 0.8 µs further from the flame. The decay then deviates from the exponential curve and the methyl persists for tens of microseconds. The results suggest that for the tested configuration, the thermal effect of individual discharges through fast gas heating is negligible, while active chemical species are produced in large quantities in the reactant gases, upstream of the flame front. The impact on the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a diluent in the fuel and oxidizer streams on the formation and evolution of precursor nanoparticles and soot in axisymmetric ethylene laminar coflow diffusion flames is experimentally explored using optical diagnostics in this paper. The optical diagnostics employed are based on temporally and spectrally resolved point measurements of laser-induced fluorescence, elastic scattering, and laser-induced incandescence. The measurements provide insight to indicative structure and concentration of precursor nanoparticles, and enable the determination of volume fraction and mean diameter of soot. Previous studies have indicated that the use of CO2 as a diluent compared to nitrogen can reduce soot formation through both chemical and thermal effects. However, the effect of CO2 addition on precursor nanoparticles' concentrations and structure is not well understood, hence exploring the impact of CO2 on precursor nanoparticles is one of the primary aims of this study. Flames with CO2 as a diluent in the jet only, coflow only, and both streams are identified and investigated. For the flames studied with respect to the replacement of N2 with CO2: i), the soot volume fraction and mean soot diameter is reduced, and ii) precursor nanoparticles concentration is reduced, and the structural transformation is delayed. This paper presents an experimental study of turbulent non-premixed jet flames of ethylene/nitrogen where the nitrogen is substituted with different proportions of hydrogen and/or ammonia. The focus is largely on the effects of hydrogen and ammonia on soot production in turbulent flames. A combination of pointwise, laser-induced fluorescence in the visible and UV bands (LIF-UV–visible), and laser-induced incandescence (LII) is used to measure soot precursors and soot along the flame centerline. All signals are collected at a repetition rate of 10 Hz with fast photomultiplier tubes to resolve the time decay. In a separate experiment, joint imaging of LIF-OH CH is also performed at a repetition rate of 10 kHz. Hydrogen substitution is found to increase the production of soot, whereas ammonia substitution inhibits soot formation. The peak mean soot volume fraction is almost a factor of 3 lower in the 25% ammonia case in comparison to the 25% nitrogen case. The mean signal decay time constant decreases with ammonia substitution, implying the formation of smaller soot nanoparticles. The mean signal decay time constant remains unaffected with hydrogen substitution. Measured peaks in LIF-CH and LIF-OH are reduced with ammonia substitution but only in regions upstream of where soot is formed. Further downstream in the sooting region, neither OH nor CH appear to be affected by the substitution of N 2 with H 2 or NH 3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studies the effects of shear inhomogeneities on the structure and stability characteristics of turbulent piloted premixed flames. The shear is introduced by splitting the fuel-air mixture in two stream and feeding each stream at different velocities through two annular concentric tubes residing within the pilot annulus. The shear is varied by varying the proportion of fluid injected through the streams and also by changing the recess distance of the inner tube with respect to the jet exit plane. It is noted that with increasing rates of shear, the Bunsen-like flames become shorter with the flame tip opening downstream of the pilot stream. Measurements of flow fields reveal useful information about the level and location of the shear layers. Joint imaging of Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) of OH and CH show that, with increasing rates of shear, the degree of flame front fragmentation increases implying the occurrence of local extinction even in regions extremely close to the pilot. The flame surface area, marked by LIF-CH is taken as an indicator of consumption rates of reactants. For all flames examined here, the peak flame surface area increases with increasing shear and subsequently decreases as the flame shortens and approaches blow-off. The peak flame surface density decreases with increasing shear. Regime diagrams show that the flames investigated here bridge the regions of broadened preheat thin reactions as well as the distributed reaction zone. While the thickness of the CH layer remain somewhat uniform, the number of flame fragments, as indicated by breaks in the CH profiles, increases with increasing shear before stabilizing at some peak value. The observed mechanism of local extinction in highly sheared Bunsen-like, turbulent piloted premixed flames complements existing results for bluff-body stabilised flames. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article reports on the quantification of the heating induced by nanosecond repetitively pulsed (NRP) glow discharges on a lean premixed methane-air flame. The flame, obtained at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, has an M-shape morphology. The equivalence ratio is 0.95 and the thermal power released by the flame is 113 W. The NRP glow discharges are produced by high voltage pulses of 10 ns duration, 7 kV amplitude, applied at a repetition frequency of 10 kHz. The average power of the plasma, determined from current and voltage measurements, is 1 W, i.e., about 0.9% of the thermal power of the flame. Broadband vibrational coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy of nitrogen is used to determine the temperature of the flame with and without plasma enhancement. The temperature evolution in the flame area shows that the thermal impact of NRP glow discharges is in the uncertainty range of the technique, i.e., ±40 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Coflow diffusion flames are a canonical laboratory-scale flame configuration, which is routinely employed in fundamental combustion studies on flame stabilization, chemical kinetics, and pollutants’ emissions. In particular, pressurized coflow flames are used to study the effect of pressure on soot formation. In this work, we explore the opportunity to scale sooting coflow flames at constant Reynolds and Grashof numbers as pressure increases. This is achieved by decreasing the bulk velocity and the diameter of the fuel nozzle with increasing pressure. Despite some minor departures from the ideal scaling due to the effect of radiative heat losses from soot, the coflow flames are shown to be self-similar to a very good approximation. By keeping the Reynolds and Grashof numbers constant, one obtains a set of pressurized flames, which have self-similar nondimensional flow fields. Self-similarity is observed experimentally via direct photography and documented thoroughly by direct numerical simulation of steady axisymmetric coflow flames of methane and air at pressures from 1 to 12 atm. Although the study does not include data on soot yields, the implications for soot formation are explored with emphasis on the field of scalar dissipation rate and on the residence time, temperature, and mixture fraction experienced by a parcel of fluid moving along the centerline and along a streamline on the flame’s wing. The formation, growth, and oxidation of soot are studied in a set of laminar coflow diffusion flames at pressures ranging from 1 to 8 atm. The modeling approach combines detailed finite rate chemical kinetics mechanisms that model the formation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) species up to pyrene, and a bivariate method of moments that describes soot particles and aggregates by their volume and surface area. The spatial distribution of soot observed experimentally and that predicted numerically are in good qualitative agreement with the peak soot volume fraction located at the flame tip and soot appearing on the flame wings and closer to the nozzle as pressure increases. A detailed analysis of the effect of hydrodynamics and mixing on soot formation is presented. We show that the scalar dissipation rate is lower for the higher pressure flames, promoting the formation of PAH species and soot. Thus, the observed increase in soot volume fraction across flames with increasing pressure is not due solely to mixture density and kinetics effects, rather is affected by hydrodynamics and mixing processes also. Similarly, our results indicate that the decrease in the scalar dissipation rate contribute to changing the location where soot forms in the flame, with soot formation occurring closer to the nozzle and outward on the flame’s wings as pressure increases. Radiative heat losses are found to lower the flame temperature, inducing a reduction of the PAH species and associated rates of soot formation. However, heat losses are responsible for a slightly longer flame, which allows for more soot. The overall effect is a modest variation of soot volume fraction if radiation is included.
