Polymetallic quartz veins, with up to 1500 ppm indium, have been discovered recently in the Sarvlaxviken area within the 1.64 Ga anorogenic multiphase Wiborg rapakivi batholith and adjacent 1.90 Ga Svecofennian crust in SE Finland. Evidence from primary fluid inclusions in the Sarvlaxviken area provides new information on the hydrothermal transport and depositional processes of metals in anorogenic granites. Fluid inclusions with variable aqueous liquid and vapour proportions (5-90 vol.% vapour) occur in quartz, cassiterite and fluorite belonging to three generations of polymetallic quartz veins. Microthermometry indicates that the veins were deposited at temperatures that range from -500°C down to <100°C and salinities from 0 to 16 eq. mass% NaCl. Fluid inclusion data show that the depositional conditions were similar regardless of vein generation. The interpreted depositional processes involve phase separation with a combination of condensation, cooling and boiling of an initially low-salinity (<3 eq. mass% NaCl) aqueous magmatic vapour phase enriched in CO2-F-Cl-S and metals. Fluid inclusions with low salinities dominate, but higher salinities are recorded in metal-rich parts of the veins. The turbulent fluid flow, with complex geometry and temperature-salinity patterns, may explain why sulfide and/or oxide opaque minerals occur irregularly, and are locally the dominating vein minerals, but disappear completely into barren parts of the quartz veins. All fluids are considered to have been generated by the F-rich Marviken granite (and related granite dykes), which show all geochemical criteria for an ore-fertile granite. The quartz veins investigated in the adjacent Svecofennian country rocks are considered to represent the very last stage of a fluid with similar characteristics to the fluid responsible for the ore formation in the Sarvlaxviken area, but that had cooled to <100°C. Calcite veins in Paleoproterozoic granitoids on the Baltic Shield are the focus of this study. These veins are distinguished by their monomineralic character, unusual thickness and closeness to Neoproterozoic dolerite dykes and therefore have drawn attention. The aim of this study was to define the source of these veins and to unravel their isotopic and chemical nature by carrying out fine-scale studies. Seven calcite veins covering a depth interval of 50-420 m below the ground surface and composed of breccias or crack-sealed fillings typically expressing syntaxial growth were sampled and analysed for a variety of physicochemical variables: homogenization temperature ( Th) and salinity of fluid inclusions, and stable isotopes (87Sr/86Sr, 13C/12C, 18O/16O), trace-element concentrations (Fe, Mn, Mg, Sr, rare earth elements) and cathodoluminescence ( CL) of the solid phase. The fluid-inclusion data show that the calcites were precipitated mainly from relatively low-temperature ( Th = 73-106°C) brines (13.4-24.5 wt.% CaCl2), and the 87Sr/86Sr is more radiogenic than expected for Rb-poor minerals precipitated from Neoproterozoic fluids. These features, together with the distribution of δ13C and δ18O values, provide evidence that the calcite veins are not genetic with the nearby Neoproterozoic dolerite dykes, but are of Paleozoic age and were precipitated from warm brines expressing a rather large variability in salinity. Whereas the isotopic and chemical variables express rather constant average values among the individual veins, they vary considerably on fine-scale across individual veins. Abstract: The Aitik Cu–Au–Ag deposit in the Gällivare area in northern Sweden is Sweden''s largest sulphide mine with an annual production of 35Mt of ore, and the biggest open pit operation in northern Europe. It is proposed in the present study that the Aitik deposit represents a Palaeoproterozoic, strongly metamorphosed porphyry copper deposit that was affected ca. 100Ma later by a regional IOCG-type hydrothermal event. Consequently, the Aitik deposit might represent a mixed ore system where an early copper mineralisation of porphyry type has been overprinted by later regional IOCG mineralisation. Several attempts have previously been made to genetically classify the Aitik Cu–Au–Ag deposit as a distinct ore type. New geochemical, petrographic, structural, and fluid inclusion results combined with published data have provided the opportunity to present new ideas on the genesis and evolution of the Aitik Cu–Au–Ag deposit. The emplacement of a ca. 1.9Ga quartz monzodiorite that host the ore at Aitik was related to subduction processes and volcanic arc formation, and synchronous with quartz vein stockwork formation and porphyry copper mineralisation. Highly saline aqueous (38wt.% NaCl) fluid inclusions in the stockwork veins suggest entrapment at 300°C and a pressure of nearly 3kbar, a high pressure for a typical porphyry copper ore, but consistent with conditions at associated deep root zones of intrusion-related magmatic–hydrothermal systems. The highly saline fluid formed disseminated and vein-type ore of mainly chalcopyrite and pyrite within comagmatic volcaniclastic rocks, and caused potassic alteration (biotite, microcline) of the host rocks. The early porphyry copper mineralising event was followed, and largely overprinted, by CO2 and aqueous medium- to high-salinity (16–57wt.% salts) fluids related to a ca. 1.8Ga tectonic and metamorphic event (peak conditions 500–600°C and 4–5kbar). Extensive deformation of rocks and redistribution of metals occurred. Magnetite enrichment locally found within late veins, and late amphibole–scapolite and K feldspar alterations within the deposit, are some of the features at Aitik implying that aqueous fluids responsible for IOCG-mineralisation (200–500°C and ~1kbar) and extensive Na–Ca alteration in the region during the 1.8Ga tectonic event also affected the Aitik rocks, possibly leading to addition of copper±gold. Abstract: The combination of fluid inclusion analyses and microfossil analyses is an excellent method to study the preservation process of deep sub-seafloor microorganisms. By studying fluid inclusions in the same mineral phases as microfossils, it is possible to reconstruct the conditions that prevailed when the microorganisms where entombed and to put them in a geological and environmental context. This study has been performed on carbonate and gypsum veins in drilled basalt samples from three seamounts belonging to the Emperor Seamounts in the Pacific Ocean: Detroit, Nintoku and Koko Seamounts. The study show that variations in salt composition (MgCl2, NaCl, KCl and CaCl2) and salinity (2.1 and 10.5eq. wt% NaCl) of the hydrothermal fluids do not have an influence on the occurrence of microfossils throughout the samples. The microorganisms were trapped and entombed at minimum temperatures of ∼130°C which implies that the microorganisms could have existed at temperatures of ∼130°C for shorter periods of time. The microorganisms were entrapped at shallow-marine to submarine conditions and the entrapment of the microorganisms occurred relatively late compared to the volcanic activity. Pb-Zn bearing mineralisations occur near the Scandinavian Caledonian margin and represent two separate ore types. These types share similarities with respect to e.g. the style of fluid inclusions and by their scattered Rb-Sr and Pb-Pb isotope data of ore sphalerite. Such features are believed to be due to fluid mixing at the site of ore deposition. A possible genetic association between the two ore styles is discussed. • Laisvall-type deposits comprise a large economic resource. • Likely Cambrian origin for sandstone-hosted mineralisation. • Possible simultaneous formation and a genetic link between two different types of Pb-Zn deposits. • Rb-Sr age data scatter due to heterogeneous initial Sr isotope ratios in ore fluids. • Multiple sources of strontium and lead in ores. Numerous sandstone-hosted Pb-Zn deposits occur along the present-day erosional front of the eastern Scandinavian Caledonides. The largest deposit is Laisvall (64.3 Mt at 4.0% Pb, 0.6% Zn and 9.0 g/t Ag) and since mineralisations generally share similar characteristics (reminding of both SEDEX and MVT-style) the term Laisvall-type has often been used. Typically, mineralised zones occur along sedimentary bedding and consist of disseminated galena and sphalerite and lesser amounts of calcite, fluorite, baryte, pyrite and sericite forming a cement that fill interstitial pores in Neoproterozoic/Eocambrian (e.g. Laisvall) to Cambrian (e.g. Vassbo) sandstones. Deposits occur both in autochtonous and allochtonous sedimentary rocks, and a broad consensus exists about their epigenetic nature, their spatial relationships to syn -sedimentary faults and that ore fluids have scavenged metals from the crystalline basement. However, the detailed ore depositional history and the timing of ore deposition have remained more controversial. New analyses aimed to complement earlier Rb-Sr data (crush-leach technique using sphalerite) fail to support a published three-point isochron age of 467 ± 5 Ma. This is probably due to syn -ore mixing between fluids carrying isotopically variable strontium and inherited problems to analyse sphalerite grains that strictly were deposited from a single ore pulse. Tentatively, strontium in the ores originate from a mix of components derived from the basement, seawater and the local sedimentary host sequences. The lead component has highly radiogenic compositions, and data define sub-parallel linear arrays interpreted to essentially represent mixing of isotopically different types of lead released from regional basement rocks. There are obvious similarities when comparing features of deposits representing two Pb-Zn ore styles, the sandstone-hosted dissemination and the fracture-controlled mineralisation in the granite-dominated basement occurring further east of the Caledonian margin. These include low temperature brines responsible for mineral deposition, the mineralogy and the nature of Rb-Sr and Pb isotope data. We suggest that these types of mineralisation have a common origin and time of emplacement, but it is elusive to propose a well-constrained age. Nonetheless, field observations and other evidence suggest that ore formation is due to large-scale fluid flow triggered by the transition from an extensional to compressional tectonic setting at about 500 Ma. Connected to this mid-Cambrian stage was the development of syn -sedimentary faults and fractures in the basement and in overlying consolidated sandstones.
