Osteoporosis is a common disease, and the prevalence is increasing in patients with chronic respiratory diseases, with important implications with regard to fractures, hospitalization, and death. Due to inconsistent data and a lack of large cohort follow-up studies on the association between lung function and osteoporosis, the aim of this study was to investigate this issue. We enrolled and followed for a median of 4 years a total of 9059 participants with no history of smoking, bronchitis, emphysema, or asthma from the Taiwan Biobank. Spirometry data, including forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC), were used to assess lung function. Changes in the calcaneus ultrasound T-score (ΔT-score) were calculated as follow-up T-score—baseline T-score. A ΔT-score ≤ −3 (median value of ΔT-score) meant a fast decline in T-score. Multivariable analysis showed that lower values of FEV1 (β, 0.127, p < 0.001), FVC (β, 0.203, p < 0.001), and FEV1/FVC (β, 0.002, p = 0.013) were significantly associated with a low baseline T-score. In addition, after follow-up, higher values of FEV1 (odds ratio (OR), 1.146, p = 0.001), FVC (OR, 1.110, p = 0.042), and FEV1/FVC (OR, 1.004, p = 0.002) were significantly associated with ΔT-score ≤ −3. FEV1/FVC < 70% (OR, 0.838, p < 0.001) was significantly associated with ΔT-score ≤ −3. In conclusion, lower FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC were associated with a low baseline T-score, and higher FEV1, FVC, and FEV1/FVC were associated with a rapid decline in T-score in follow-up. This suggests that lung disease may be associated with bone mineral density in the Taiwanese population with no history of smoking, bronchitis, emphysema, or asthma. The global prevalence and incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) continue to increase. Whether hyperuricemia is an independent risk factor for renal progression and whether there are sex differences in the relationships between serum uric acid (UA) and a decline in renal function are unclear. Therefore, in this longitudinal study, we aimed to explore these relationships in a large cohort of around 27,000 Taiwanese participants in the Taiwan Biobank (TWB), and also to identify serum UA cutoff levels in men and women to predict new-onset CKD. A total of 26,942 participants with a median 4 years of complete follow-up data were enrolled from the TWB. We excluded those with CKD (estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 mL/min/1.73 m2) at baseline (n = 297), and the remaining 26,645 participants (males: 9356; females: 17,289) were analyzed. The participants who developed CKD during follow-up were defined as having incident new-onset CKD, and those with a serum UA level >7 mg/dL in males and >6 mg/dL in females were classified as having hyperuricemia. After multivariable analysis, hyperuricemia (odds ratio [OR], 2.541; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.970–3.276; p < 0.001) was significantly associated with new-onset CKD. Furthermore, in the male participants (n = 9356), hyperuricemia (OR, 1.989; 95% CI, 1.440–2.747; p < 0.001), and quartile 4 of UA (vs. quartile 1; OR, 2.279; 95% CI, 1.464–3.547; p < 0.001) were significantly associated with new-onset CKD, while in the female participants (n = 17,289), hyperuricemia (OR, 3.813; 95% CI, 2.500–5.815; p < 0.001), quartile 3 of UA (vs. quartile 1; OR, 3.741; 95% CI, 1.250–11.915; p = 0.018), and quartile 4 of UA (vs. quartile 1; OR, 12.114; 95% CI, 14.278–34.305; p < 0.001) were significantly associated with new-onset CKD. There were significant interactions between hyperuricemia and sex (p = 0.024), and quartiles of serum UA and sex (p = 0.010) on new-onset CKD. Hyperuricemia was associated with new-onset CKD in the enrolled participants, and the interactions between hyperuricemia and sex were statistically significant. A rapid decline in renal function can cause many complications, and therefore it is important to detect associated risk factors. Few studies have evaluated the associations among obesity-related indices and metabolic syndrome (MetS) with renal function decline. This longitudinal study aimed to explore these relationships in a large cohort of Taiwanese participants. The studied obesity-related indices were waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), A body shape index (ABSI), visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (CI), body mass index (BMI), body adiposity index (BAI) and abdominal volume index (AVI). We included 122,068 participants in the baseline study, of whom 27,033 were followed for a median of four years. The baseline prevalence of MetS was 17.7%. Multivariable analysis showed that the participants with MetS and high VAI, WHtR, WHR, LAP, CI, BRI, BMI, BAI, AVI, and ABSI values were significantly associated with a high baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (all p < 0.001). In addition, the participants with MetS (p < 0.001), high WHtR (p = 0.007), low LAP (p < 0.001), high BRI (p = 0.002), high CI (p = 0.002), high AVI (p = 0.001), high VAI (p = 0.017), and high ABSI (p = 0.013) were significantly associated with a low △eGFR, indicating a rapid decline in renal function. These results showed associations between MetS and high values of obesity-related indices except LAP with high baseline eGFR and rapid decline in kidney function. Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular diseases, and obesity is a major risk factor for hypertension. The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate sex differences in the correlations among obesity-related indices and incident hypertension in a large Taiwanese cohort. We included 21,466 enrollees in the Taiwan Biobank and followed them for 4 years. Of the 21,466 patients enrolled in this study, 6899 (mean age, 49.6 ± 10.9 years) were male and 14,567 (mean age, 49.7 ± 10.0 years) were female. Data on visceral adiposity index (VAI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), lipid accumulation product (LAP), conicity index (CI), body roundness index (BRI), body mass index (BMI), body adiposity index (BAI), and abdominal volume index (AVI) were collected and analyzed. The results showed that all of the studied obesity-related indices were significantly associated with incident hypertension. Among them, WHtR was the strongest predictor of hypertension in both sexes. In addition, interactions between VAI, LAP, CI, BMI, and AVI with sex on incident hypertension were also statistically significant. CI and AVI were more strongly associated with hypertension in the men than in the women, while VAI, LAP, and BMI were more strongly associated with hypertension in the women. In conclusion, the studied obesity-related indices were found to be predictors of incident hypertension, and there were differences in the associations between the male and female participants. Therefore, this study aimed to explore associations between changes in lung function and obesity-related indices in a large longitudinal study. A total of 9059 participants with no personal histories of asthma, smoking, bronchitis, or emphysema were enrolled from the Taiwan Biobank and followed for 4 years. Lung function was assessed using spirometry measurements including forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). Changes in FEV1/FVC (∆FEV1/FVC) between baseline and follow-up were calculated. The following obesity-related indices were studied: lipid accumulation product (LAP), body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (CI), body adiposity index (BAI), abdominal volume index (AVI), body mass index (BMI), waist–hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). In multivariable analysis, the subjects with high BMI (p < 0.001), WHR (p < 0.001), WHtR (p < 0.001), LAP (p = 0.002), BRI (p < 0.001), CI (p = 0.005), BAI (p < 0.001), and AVI (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a high baseline FEV1/FVC. After 4 years of follow-up, the subjects with high BMI (p < 0.001), WHR (p < 0.001), WHtR (p < 0.001), LAP (p = 0.001), BRI (p < 0.001), CI (p = 0.002), BAI (p < 0.001), and AVI (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a low △FEV1/FVC. Chronic lung disease is associated with tremendous social and economic burden worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the sex-specific risk factors for changes in lung function in a large longitudinal study. We included 9059 participants from the Taiwan Biobank. None of the participants had a history of smoking, asthma, emphysema or bronchitis. Lung function was assessed using spirometry measurements of forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1). Change in the FEV1/FVC (ΔFEV1/FVC) was calculated as a follow-up FEV1/FVC minus baseline FEV1/FVC. Linear regression analysis was used to identify associations between variables and ΔFEV1/FVC in the male and female participants. After multivariable adjustments, the male participants (vs. females; p = 0.021) were significantly associated with a low ΔFEV1/FVC. In addition, the male participants with low aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (p = 0.003), high alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (p = 0.006) and a low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with a low ΔFEV1/FVC. For the female participants, low systolic blood pressure (p = 0.005), low diastolic blood pressure (p = 0.031), low AST (p < 0.001), high ALT (p < 0.001) and a low eGFR (p = 0.001) were significantly associated with a low ΔFEV1/FVC. In this large follow-up study, we found that the male participants had a faster decrease in the FEV1/FVC than the female participants. In addition, liver and renal functions were correlated with changes in lung function in both the male and female participants. A rapid decline in renal function is associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and therefore it is important to identify those at high-risk of rapid renal function decline. The relationship between liver function and renal function is unclear. Therefore, in this longitudinal study, we aimed to investigate associations between liver function and rapid renal function decline. A total of 27,116 participants were enrolled from the Taiwan Biobank and followed for 3.8 years. A rapid decline in renal function was defined as a decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of ≥25%. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify associations between liver function parameters (glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase, glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, albumin, α-fetoprotein [AFP], total bilirubin, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase) and eGFR decline ≥ 25%. The rate of eGFR decline of ≥25% was 4.7%. Multivariable analysis showed that low albumin (odds ratio [OR], 0.173; p < 0.001), high AFP (OR, 1.006; p = 0.010), and low total bilirubin (OR, 0.588; p < 0.001) were significantly associated with eGFR decline ≥ 25% in all study participants. After excluding abnormal liver function, low albumin (OR, 0.189; p < 0.001), high AFP (OR, 1.007; p = 0.011), and low total bilirubin (OR, 0.569; p = 0.001) were still significantly associated with an eGFR decline of ≥25%. The results of this large population-based cohort study showed associations between low albumin, low bilirubin, and high AFP with a rapid renal function decline. A greater understanding of potential risk factors for a rapid decline in renal function may help to reduce the burden of renal failure in this high-risk population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies have suggested that there may be common pathogenic pathways linking osteoporosis and metabolic syndrome (MetS) due to the multiple risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease caused by MetS. However, results on the association between MetS and bone health are inconsistent and sometimes contradictory. In this study, we aimed to investigate the associations between the effects of MetS risk factors and bone mineral density (BMD) T-score in a longitudinal study of 27,033 participants from the Taiwan Biobank with a follow-up period of 4 years. BMD of the calcaneus was measured in the non-dominant foot using ultrasound in the Taiwanese population. The overall prevalence rates of MetS were 16.7% (baseline) and 21.2% (follow-up). The participants were stratified into four groups according to the status of MetS (no/yes at baseline and follow-up). We investigated associations between MetS and its five components (baseline, follow-up) with BMD ΔT-score and found that the (no, yes) MetS group, (no, yes) abdominal obesity group, (no, yes) hypertriglyceridemia group, and (no, yes) low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol group had the lowest ΔT-score. Furthermore, in the (no, yes) MetS group, high Δwaist circumference (p = 0.009), high Δtriglycerides (p = 0.004), low ΔHDL cholesterol (p = 0.034), and low Δsystolic blood pressure (p = 0.020) were significantly associated with low ΔT-score, but Δfasting glucose was not. In conclusion, in this large population-based cohort study, our data provide evidence that the development of MetS is strongly associated with increased rates of BMD loss in the Taiwanese population.
