In this study, a double-layer active and intelligent packaging system was developed based on two main natural macromolecules i.e. protein and carbohydrate with green perspective. Firstly, the salep-based films containing different concentrations (0-8 % w/w) of the inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin/black chickpea anthocyanins (βCD/BCPA) were produced. The salep film containing 8 % of βCD/BCPA complex was specified as the optimized film sample based on its performance as a color indicator. The electrospinning of black chickpea protein isolate nanofibers (BCPI NFs) containing citral nanoliposomes (NLPs) was done on the optimized salep film. The cross-sectional field emission scanning electron microscopy approved the creation of double-layer structure of the developed film. The study of chemical and crystalline structure, as well as the thermal properties of the film exhibited the physical attachment of BCPI electrospun NFs on salep film. The effectiveness of the developed system was studied in detection of spoilage and increasing the shelf life of seafood products, including shrimp and fish fillet. The performance of the intelligent layer in detection of freshness/spoilage was acceptable for both seafood products. The utilization of biopolymer-based food packaging holds significant promise in aligning with sustainability goals and enhancing food safety by offering a renewable, biodegradable, and safer alternative to traditional synthetic polymers. However, these biopolymer-derived films often exhibit poor barrier and mechanical properties, potentially limiting their commercial viability. Desirable barrier properties, such as moisture and oxygen resistance, are critical for preserving and maintaining the quality of packaged food products. This review comprehensively explores different traditional and advance methodologies employed to access the barrier properties of edible films. Additionally, this review thoroughly examines various approaches aimed at enhancing the barrier properties of edible films, such as the fabrication of multilayer films, the selection of biopolymers for composite films, as well as the integration of plasticizers, crosslinkers, hydrophobic agents, and nanocomposites. Moreover, the influence of process conditions, such as preparation techniques, homogenization, drying conditions, and rheological behavior, on the barrier properties of edible films has been discussed. Consumer demands to utilize environmentally friendly packaging have led researchers to develop packaging materials from naturally derived resources. In recent years, plant protein-based films as a replacement for synthetic plastics have attracted the attention of the global food packaging industry due to their biodegradability and unique properties. Biopolymer-based films need a filler to show improved packaging properties. One of the latest strategies introduced to food packaging technology is the production of nanocomposite films which are multiphase materials containing a filler with at least one dimension less than 100 nm. This review provides the recent findings on plant-based protein films as biodegradable materials that can be combined with nanoparticles that are applicable to food packaging. Moreover, it investigates the characterization of nanocomposite plant-based protein films/edible coatings. It also briefly describes the application of plant-based protein nanocomposite films/coating on fruits/vegetables, meat and seafood products, and some other foods. The results indicate that the functional performance, barrier, mechanical, optical, thermal and antimicrobial properties of plant protein-based materials can be extended by incorporating nanomaterials. Recent reports provide a better understanding of how incorporating nanomaterials into plant protein-based biopolymers leads to an increase in the shelf life of food products during storage time.

Active packaging (AP) is a new class of innovative food packaging, containing bioactive compounds, is able to maintain the quality of food and extend its shelf life by releasing active agent during storage. The main challenge in designing the AP system is slowing the release rate of active compounds for its prolonged activity. Controlled-release active packaging (CRP) is an innovative technology that provides control in the release of active compounds during storage. Various approaches have been proposed to design CRP. The purpose of this review was to gather and present the strategies utilized for release controlling of active compounds from food AP systems. The chemical modification of polymers, the preparation of multilayer films and the use of cross-linking agents are some methods tried in the last decades. Other approaches use molecular complexes and irradiation treatments. Micro- or nano-encapsulation of active compounds and using nano-structured materials in the AP film matrix are the newest techniques used for the preparation of CRP systems. The action mechanism for each technique was described and an effort was made to highlight representative published papers about each release controlling approach. This review will benefit future prospects of exploring other innovative release controlling methods in food CRP.

Novel bacterial cellulose (BC) based monolayer and multilayer films, incorporating 5wt.% Scrophularia striata Boiss. extract (SE) were obtained. The effect of lamination and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexation of SE on morphological, physical, antioxidant and release properties of films were investigated. FT-IR results reflected that some new interactions have occurred between BC and β-CD. The XRD analyses showed a decrease in diffraction intensities of BC by addition of free SE. SEM results indicated that the intrinsic compactness of the BC film was preserved by addition of SE/β-CD complex. Lamination and SE/β-CD addition enhanced the mechanical properties. SE loaded films exhibited a good antioxidant activity. Release studies indicated that the release rate and diffusion coefficient (D) of SE in 95% ethanol simulant were significantly decreased by lamination and complexation of SE with β-CD. In this study, ternary potato starch (PS) bionanocomposite films containing two types of nanoparticles, sodium montmorillonite (MMT), one-dimensional (1D) clay platelets, (3 and 5wt%) and TiO2, three-dimensional (3D) nanospheres, (0.5, 1 and 2wt%), are prepared using solvent casting method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) test confirms the completely exfoliated structure formed in the PS-MMT nanocomposites containing 3 and 5% MMT. The success of the formation of new hydrogen bonds between the hydroxyl groups of starch and nanofillers is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (EB), glass transition temperature (Tg), and melting point (Tm) of the films are also enhanced after MMT and TiO2 incorporation. The water vapor permeability (WVP) and the visible, UVA, UVB and UVC lights transmittance decreases upon TiO2 and MMT content increasing. Most materials currently used for food packaging are nondegradable, generating environmental problems. Several biopolymers have been exploited to develop materials for ecofriendly food packaging. However, the use of biopolymers has been limited because of their usually poor mechanical and barrier properties, which may be improved by adding reinforcing compounds (fillers), forming composites. Most reinforced materials present poor matrix-filler interactions, which tend to improve with decreasing filler dimensions. The use of fillers with at least one nanoscale dimension (nanoparticles) produces nanocomposites. Nanoparticles have proportionally larger surface area than their microscale counterparts, which favors the filler-matrix interactions and the performance of the resulting material. Besides nanoreinforcements, nanoparticles can have other functions when added to a polymer, such as antimicrobial activity, etc. in this review paper, the structure and properties of main kinds of nanostructured materials which have been studied to use as nanofiller in biopolymer matrices are overviewed, as well as their effects and applications.
