This article provides an introduction to the special issue on the "Economic Impacts of Tariff Change in Asia." It discusses the history of regional trade agreements (RTAs) in East Asia, including the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and the recent establishment of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement. The article also highlights various studies conducted on the economic impacts of trade liberalization, such as the effects on household behavior, production, employment, wages, foreign direct investment (FDI), and nontariff measures (NTMs). The special issue contains selected articles that analyze the impacts of tariff changes in China, Korea, Taiwan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. These articles use econometric approaches and official statistics to examine the effects of tariff reductions on import prices, FDI flows, trade patterns, import values, employment, wages, and NTMs. The findings of these studies provide valuable insights for researchers and policymakers interested in trade and industrial policy in Asia. In this study, we examine the impact of Japan's International Investment Agreements (IIAs) on the locational choice of Japanese firms' foreign direct investment (FDI) by considering the quality of IIAs. We estimate the conditional logit model covering 12,435 FDI cases by 3838 Japanese companies in 92 host countries, 16 manufacturing sectors and 12 non‐manufacturing sectors from 2000 to 2019. We found that the presence of IIAs, particularly comprehensive and high‐level ones, has a positive impact on Japan's FDI. On the contrary, the past incidence of investor–state disputes has a negative impact. These effects are found to be particularly strong for FDI by small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises. High regulatory quality is found to attract FDI, whereas the positive impact of IIAs in attracting FDI is strong in a country with a low regulatory quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' (ASEAN) New Frontiers also called Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV). It mentions that CLMV has become popular due to several factors including rapid economic growth, abundant availability of low-wage workers and abundant endowments of natural resources. It states that CLMV has low foreign direct investment (FDI) but improvement in transport connectivity.

In the light of the importance of foreign direct investment (FDI) for the promotion of economic development, this paper examines the impact of the changes in the real exchange rate and its volatility on FDI. Examining Japan's FDI by industries, we found that the depreciation of the currency of the host country attracted FDI, while the high volatility of the exchange rate discouraged FDI. Our results suggest the need to avoid over-valuation of the exchange rate and to maintain stable but flexible exchange rate in order to attract FDI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses articles in the issue on topics including globalization, research and development (R&D) investment and foreign direct investment (FDI) in Korean manufacturing sector.

The article discusses the trade and investment mechanisms that contributed to the economic development in East Asia. International economic activities such as trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) have led to the growth of East Asian economies. Export goods which are important for the growth of economies have likewise enabled the importation of intermediate and capital goods. Capital and transfers of technology financed by FDI have also contributed to economic growth, including efficiency of goods production and increased sales of market products.

The article reviews the article "US Foreign Direct Investment in East Asia: Strategy and Policy Issues," by Mahani Zainal Abidin, Abdul Aziz, and Nor Izzatina, which appeared in the "Asian Economic Policy Review," Volume 4 Number 2, in December 2009.

The article focuses on the internalization of Indian enterprises. It states that despite the rapid growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) of India, the countries economy is important because its development stage is low. Moreover, it is noted that the FDI environment has played a role in deregulation and liberalization which resulted to the expansion of India's outward FDI.

Summary: This paper examines the determinants of the backward vertical linkages of Japanese foreign affiliates in manufacturing for the period 1994–2000, focusing on the local backward linkages, or local procurement in the host country. Our major findings are twofold. First, the unobserved affiliate-specific characteristics explain the large part of the variation of the backward linkages among foreign affiliates. Second, the experience of the affiliate has positive and sometimes nonlinear effects on local procurement for the affiliates, especially in Southeast Asia and China. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
