In this work, we study quantum error-correcting codes obtained by using Steane-enlargement. We apply this technique to certain codes defined from Cartesian products previously considered by Galindo et al. in [4]. We give bounds on the dimension increase obtained via enlargement, and additionally give an algorithm to compute the true increase. A number of examples of codes are provided, and their parameters are compared to relevant codes in the literature, which shows that the parameters of the enlarged codes are advantageous. Furthermore, comparison with the Gilbert-Varshamov bound for stabilizer quantum codes shows that several of the enlarged codes match or exceed the parameters promised by the bound., 12 pages

In this paper, we study the construction of quantum codes by applying Steane-enlargement to codes from the Hermitian curve. We cover Steane-enlargement of both usual one-point Hermitian codes and of order bound improved Hermitian codes. In particular, the paper contains two constructions of quantum codes whose parameters are described by explicit formulae, and we show that these codes compare favourably to existing, comparable constructions in the literature., 11 pages

Nested code pairs play a crucial role in the construction of ramp secret sharing schemes [Kurihara et al. 2012] and in the CSS construction of quantum codes [Ketkar et al. 2006]. The important parameters are (1) the codimension, (2) the relative minimum distance of the codes, and (3) the relative minimum distance of the dual set of codes. Given values for two of them, one aims at finding a set of nested codes having parameters with these values and with the remaining parameter being as large as possible. In this work we study nested codes from the Hermitian curve. For not too small codimension, we present improved constructions and provide closed formula estimates on their performance. For small codimension we show how to choose pairs of one-point algebraic geometric codes in such a way that one of the relative minimum distances is larger than the corresponding non-relative minimum distance., 28 pages

We study a family of primary affine variety codes defined from the Klein quartic. The duals of these codes have previously been treated in [12, Ex. 3.2]. Among the codes that we construct almost all have parameters as good as the best known codes according to [9] and in the remaining few cases the parameters are almost as good. To establish the code parameters we apply the footprint bound [10, 7] from Gr\"obner basis theory and for this purpose we develop a new method where we inspired by Buchberger's algorithm perform a series of symbolic computations. 1

We discuss how subspace codes can be used to simultaneously correct errors and erasures when the network performs random linear network coding and the edges are noisy channels. This is done by combining the subspace code with a classical linear error-correcting code. The classical code then takes care of the errors and the subspace codes takes care of the erasures., 6 pages. The below paper was written in May 2014. The authors have come to know that there is a significant overlap with previous results by Vitaly Skachek, Olgica Milenkovic, and Angelia Nedic published in July 2011 as arXiv:1107.4581. Coset constructions of $q$-ary Reed-Muller codes can be used to store secrets on a distributed storage system in such a way that only parties with access to a large part of the system can obtain information while still allowing for local error-correction. In this paper we determine the relative generalized Hamming weights of these codes which can be translated into a detailed description of the information leakage [2, 24, 21, 11]., Comment: 41 pages. This paper proposes Fulcrum network codes, a network coding framework that achieves three seemingly conflicting objectives: (i) to reduce the coding coefficient overhead to almost n bits per packet in a generation of n packets; (ii) to operate the network using only GF(2) operations at intermediate nodes if necessary, dramatically reducing complexity in the network; (iii) to deliver an end-to-end performance that is close to that of a high-field network coding system for high-end receivers while simultaneously catering to low-end receivers that decode in GF(2). As a consequence of (ii) and (iii), Fulcrum codes have a unique trait missing so far in the network coding literature: they provide the network with the flexibility to spread computational complexity over different devices depending on their current load, network conditions, or even energy targets in a decentralized way. At the core of our framework lies the idea of precoding at the sources using an expansion field GF(2h) to increase the number of dimensions seen by the network using a linear mapping. Fulcrum codes can use any high-field linear code for precoding, e.g., Reed-Solomon, with the structure of the precode determining some of the key features of the resulting code. For example, a systematic structure provides the ability to manage heterogeneous receivers while using the same data stream. Our analysis shows that the number of additional dimensions created during precoding controls the trade-off between delay, overhead, and complexity. We present a new bound for the minimum distance of a general primary linear code. For affine variety codes defined from generalised C_{ab} curves the new bound often improves dramatically on the Feng-Rao bound for primary codes. The method does not only work for the minimum distance but can be applied to any generalised Hamming weight, 30 pages, 7 figures

Salazar, Dunn and Graham in [Salazar et. al., 2006] presented an improved Feng-Rao bound for the minimum distance of dual codes. In this work we take the improvement a step further. Both the original bound by Salazar et. al., as well as our improvement are lifted so that they deal with generalized Hamming weights. We also demonstrate the advantage of working with one-way well-behaving pairs rather than weakly well-behaving or well-behaving pairs., 16 pages, 3 figures

We generalize the list decoding algorithm for Hermitian codes proposed by Lee and O'Sullivan based on Gr\"obner bases to general one-point AG codes, under an assumption weaker than one used by Beelen and Brander. By using the same principle, we also generalize the unique decoding algorithm for one-point AG codes over the Miura-Kamiya $C_{ab}$ curves proposed by Lee, Bras-Amor\'os and O'Sullivan to general one-point AG codes, without any assumption. Finally we extend the latter unique decoding algorithm to list decoding, modify it so that it can be used with the Feng-Rao improved code construction, prove equality between its error correcting capability and half the minimum distance lower bound by Andersen and Geil that has not been done in the original proposal, and remove the unnecessary computational steps so that it can run faster., Comment: IEEEtran.cls, 5 pages, no figure. We consider weighted Reed-Muller codes over point ensemble $S_1 \times...\times S_m$ where $S_i$ needs not be of the same size as $S_j$. For $m = 2$ we determine optimal weights and analyze in detail what is the impact of the ratio $|S_1|/|S_2|$ on the minimum distance. In conclusion the weighted Reed-Muller code construction is much better than its reputation. For a class of affine variety codes that contains the weighted Reed-Muller codes we then present two list decoding algorithms. With a small modification one of these algorithms is able to correct up to 31 errors of the [49, 11, 28] Joyner code., Comment: 29 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables

Koetter and Kschischang showed in [R. Koetter and F.R. Kschischang, "Coding for Errors and Erasures in Random Network Coding," IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, {54(8), 2008] that the network coding counterpart of Gabidulin codes performs asymptotically optimal with respect to the subspace distance. Recently, Silva and Kschischang introduced in [D. Silva and F.R. Kschischang, "On Metrics for Error Correction in Network Coding," To appear in IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, ArXiv: 0805.3824v4[cs.IT], 2009] the injection distance to give a detailed picture of what happens in noncoherent network coding. We show that the above codes are also asymptotically optimal with respect to this distance.
