Search

As of today, we have directly detected exactly one source in both gravitational waves (GWs) and electromagnetic (EM) radiation, the binary neutron star merger GW170817, its associated gamma-ray burst GRB170817A, and the subsequent kilonova SSS17a/AT 2017gfo. Within ten years, we will detect hundreds of events, including new classes of events such as neutron-star-black-hole mergers, core-collapse supernovae, and almost certainly something completely unexpected. As we build this sample, we will explore exotic astrophysical topics ranging from nucleosynthesis, stellar evolution, general relativity, high-energy astrophysics, nuclear matter, to cosmology. The discovery potential is extraordinary, and investments in this area will yield major scientific breakthroughs. We present continued radio follow-up observations of PTF11qcj, a highly energetic broad-lined Type Ic supernova (SN), with a radio peak luminosity comparable to that of the $\gamma$-ray burst (GRB) associated SN 1998bw. The latest observations, carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), extend up to $\sim$5 years after the PTF11qcj optical discovery. The radio light curve shows a double-peak profile, possibly associated with density variations in the circumstellar medium (CSM), or with the presence of an off-axis GRB jet. Optical spectra of PTF11qcj taken during both peaks of the radio light curve do not show the broad H$\alpha$ features typically expected from H-rich circumstellar interaction. Modeling of the second radio peak within the CSM interaction scenario requires a flatter density profile and an enhanced progenitor mass-loss rate compared to those required to model the first peak. Although our radio data alone cannot rule out the alternative scenario of an off-axis GRB powering the second radio peak, the implied off-axis GRB parameters are unusual compared to typical values found for cosmological long GRBs. Deep X-ray observations carried out around the time of the second radio peak could have helped distinguish between the density variation and off-axis GRB scenarios. We present the results of a community study aimed at exploring some of the scientific opportunities that the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) could open in the field of multi-messenger time-domain astronomy. We focus on compact binary mergers, golden astrophysical targets of ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors such as advanced LIGO. A decade from now, a large number of these mergers is likely to be discovered by a world-wide network of GW detectors. This will enable the identification of host galaxies, either directly through detection of electromagnetic (EM) counterparts, or indirectly by probing potential anisotropies in the spatial distribution of mergers. Identifying the host galaxy population of GW mergers would provide a way to constrain the efficiency of various binary neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH) formation scenarios, and the merger timescale distributions as linked to merger rates in early- and late-type galaxies. We discuss how a radio array with ~10x the sensitivity of the current Karl G. Jansky VLA and ~10x the resolution, would enable resolved radio continuum studies of binary merger hosts, probing regions of the galaxy undergoing star formation (which can be heavily obscured by dust and gas), AGN components, and mapping the offset distribution of the mergers with respect to the host galaxy light. For compact binary mergers containing at least one NS and with associated EM counterparts, we show how the ngVLA would enable direct size measurements of the relativistic merger ejecta and probe, for the first time directly, their dynamics., 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 Table, published as an ngVLA memo at https://library.nrao.edu/ngvla.shtml

We present multi-wavelength follow-up campaigns by the AstroSat-CZTI and GROWTH collaborations to search for an electromagnetic counterpart to the gravitational wave event GW170104. At the time of the GW170104 trigger, the AstroSat CZTI field-of-view covered 50.3\% of the sky localization. We do not detect any hard X-ray (>100 keV) signal at this time, and place an upper limit of $\approx 4.5 \times 10^{-7}~{\rm erg~cm}^{-2}{\rm~s}^{-1}$ for a 1\,s timescale. Separately, the ATLAS survey reported a rapidly fading optical source dubbed ATLAS17aeu in the error circle of GW170104. Our panchromatic investigation of ATLAS17aeu shows that it is the afterglow of an unrelated long, soft GRB~170105A, with only a fortuitous spatial coincidence with GW170104. At low redshift, a handful of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been discovered with peak luminosities ($L_{\rm iso} < 10^{48.5}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$) substantially lower than the average of the more distant ones ($L_{\rm iso} > 10^{49.5}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$). The properties of several low-luminosity (low-$L$) GRBs indicate that they can be due to shock break-out, as opposed to the emission from ultrarelativistic jets. Owing to this, it is highly debated how both populations are connected, and whether there is a continuum between them. The burst at redshift $z=0.283$ from 2012 April 22 is one of the very few examples of intermediate-$L$ GRBs with a $\gamma$-ray luminosity of $L\sim10^{48.9}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}$ that have been detected up to now. Together with the robust detection of its accompanying supernova SN 2012bz, it has the potential to answer important questions on the origin of low- and high-$L$ GRBs and the GRB-SN connection. We carried out a spectroscopy campaign using medium- and low-resolution spectrographs at 6--10-m class telescopes, covering the time span of 37.3 days, and a multi-wavelength imaging campaign from radio to X-ray energies over a duration of $\sim270$ days. Furthermore, we used a tuneable filter centred at H$\alpha$ to map star formation in the host galaxy and the surrounding galaxies. We used these data to extract and model the properties of different radiation components and incorporate spectral-energy-distribution fitting techniques to extract the properties of the host galaxy. Modelling the light curve and spectral energy distribution from the radio to the X-rays revealed the blast-wave to expand with an initial Lorentz factor of $\Gamma_0\sim60$, low for a high-$L$ GRB, and that the afterglow had an exceptional low peak luminosity-density of $\lesssim2\times10^{30}~\rm{erg\,s}^{-1}\,\rm{Hz}^{-1}$ in the sub-mm. We present multiwavelength observations of the afterglow of GRB 130427A, the brightest (in total fluence) gamma-ray burst of the past 29 years. Optical spectroscopy from Gemini-North reveals the redshift of the GRB to be z=0.340, indicating that its unprecedented brightness is primarily the result of its relatively close proximity to Earth; the intrinsic luminosities of both the GRB and its afterglow are not extreme in comparison to other bright GRBs. We present a large suite of multiwavelength observations spanning from 300 s to 130 d after the burst and demonstrate that the afterglow shows relatively simple, smooth evolution at all frequencies with no significant late-time flaring or rebrightening activity. The entire dataset from 1 GHz to 10 GeV can be modeled as synchrotron emission from a combination of reverse and forward shocks in good agreement with the standard afterglow model, providing strong support to the applicability of the underlying theory and clarifying the nature of the GeV emission observed to last for minutes to hours following other very bright GRBs. A tenuous, wind-stratified circumburst density profile is required by the observations, suggesting a massive-star progenitor with a low mass-loss rate, perhaps due to low metallicity. GRBs similar in nature to GRB 130427A, inhabiting low-density media and exhibiting strong reverse shocks, are probably not uncommon but may have been difficult to recognize in the past due to their relatively faint late-time radio emission; more such events should be found in abundance by the new generation of sensitive radio and millimeter instruments., Accepted to ApJ. We present the results of a 5 GHz survey with the Very Large Array, designed to search for short-lived (1.8 mJy, sky surface density of 0.039 (-0.032/+0.13) deg^-2. This areal density is consistent with the sky surface density of transients from the Bower et al. survey extrapolated to 1.8 mJy. Our observed transient areal density is consistent with a Neutron Stars (NSs) origin for these events. Furthermore, we use the data to measure the sources variability on days to years time scales, and we present the variability structure function of 5 GHz sources. The mean structure function shows a fast increase on ~1 day time scale, followed by a slower increase on time scales of up to 10 days. On time scales between 10-60 days the structure function is roughly constant. We find that >30% of the unresolved sources brighter than 1.8 mJy are variable at the >4 sigma confidence level, presumably due mainly to refractive scintillation., Submitted to ApJ, 19 pages, 8 figures

Active galactic nuclei (AGN), powered by long-term accretion onto central supermassive black holes, produce relativistic jets with lifetimes of greater than one million yr that preclude observations at birth. Transient accretion onto a supermassive black hole, for example through the tidal disruption of a stray star, may therefore offer a unique opportunity to observe and study the birth of a relativistic jet. On 2011 March 25, the Swift ��-ray satellite discovered an unusual transient source (Swift J164449.3+573451) potentially representing such an event. Here we present the discovery of a luminous radio transient associated with Swift J164449.3+573451, and an extensive set of observations spanning centimeter to millimeter wavelengths and covering the first month of evolution. These observations lead to a positional coincidence with the nucleus of an inactive galaxy, and provide direct evidence for a newly-formed relativistic outflow, launched by transient accretion onto a million solar mass black hole. While a relativistic outflow was not predicted in this scenario, we show that the tidal disruption of a star naturally explains the high-energy properties, radio luminosity, and the inferred rate of such events. The weaker beaming in the radio compared to ��-rays/X-rays, suggests that radio searches may uncover similar events out to redshifts of z ~ 6., 24 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

We present broadband (radio, optical, and X-ray) light curves and spectra of the afterglows of four long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs 090323, 090328, 090902B, and 090926A) detected by the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) and Large Area Telescope (LAT) instruments on the Fermi satellite. With its wide spectral bandpass, extending to GeV energies, Fermi is sensitive to GRBs with very large isotropic energy releases (10e54 erg). Although rare, these events are particularly important for testing GRB central-engine models. When combined with spectroscopic redshifts, our afterglow data for these four events are able to constrain jet collimation angles, the density structure of the circumburst medium, and both the true radiated energy release and the kinetic energy of the outflows. In agreement with our earlier work, we find that the relativistic energy budget of at least one of these events (GRB 090926A) exceeds the canonical value of 10e51 erg by an order of magnitude. Such energies pose a severe challenge for models in which the GRB is powered by a magnetar or neutrino-driven collapsar, but remain compatible with theoretical expectations for magneto-hydrodynamical (MHD) collapsar models. Our jet opening angles (theta) are similar to those found for pre-Fermi GRBs, but the large initial Lorentz factors (Gamma_0) inferred from the detection of GeV photons imply theta Gamma_0 ~ 70-90, values which are above those predicted in MHD models of jet acceleration. Finally, we find that these Fermi-LAT events preferentially occur in a low-density circumburst environment, and we speculate that this might result from the lower mass-loss rates of their lower-metallicity progenitor stars. Future studies of Fermi-LAT afterglows in the radio with the order-of-magnitude improvement in sensitivity offered by the EVLA should definitively establish the relativistic energy budgets of these events., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, submitted to ApJ. Over the past decade our physical understanding of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has progressed rapidly thanks to the discovery and observation of their long-lived afterglow emission. Long-duration (T < 2 s) GRBs are associated with the explosive deaths of massive stars (``collapsars''), which produce accompanying supernovae, while the short-duration (T > 2 s) GRBs arise from a different origin, which has been argued to be the merger of two compact objects, either neutron stars or black holes. Here we present observations of GRB060614, a 100-s long burst discovered by the Swift satellite, which require the invocation of a new explosive process: either a massive ``collapsar'' that powers a GRB without any associated supernova, or a new type of engine, as long-lived as the collapsar but without any such massive stellar host. We also discuss the properties of this burst's redshift z=0.125 host galaxy, which distinguish it from other long-duration GRBs and suggest that an entirely new type of GRB progenitor may be required.

Over the last decade, long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) including the subclass of X-ray flashes (XRFs) have been revealed to be a rare variety of Type Ibc supernova (SN). While all these events result from the death of massive stars, the electromagnetic luminosities of GRBs and XRFs exceed those of ordinary Type Ibc SNe by many orders of magnitude. The essential physical process that causes a dying star to produce a GRB or XRF, and not just an SN, remains the crucial open question. Here we present radio and X-ray observations of XRF 060218 (associated with SN 2006aj), the second nearest GRB identified to-date, which allow us to measure its total energy and place it in the larger context of cosmic explosions. We show that this event is 100 times less energetic but ten times more common than cosmological GRBs. Moreover, it is distinguished from ordinary Type Ibc SNe by the presence of 10^48 erg coupled to mildly-relativistic ejecta, along with a central engine (an accretion-fed, rapidly rotating compact source) which produces X-rays for weeks after the explosion. This suggests that the production of relativistic ejecta is the key physical distinction between GRBs/XRFs and ordinary SNe, while the nature of the central engine (black hole or magnetar) may distinguish typical bursts from low-luminosity, spherical events like XRF 060218., To appear in Nature on August 31 2006 (15 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, including Supplementary Information)

Over a decade ago it was established that the remarkable high energy transients, known as soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs), are a Galactic population and originate from neutron stars with intense (~ 0.3 erg/cm^2) was detected from SGR 1806-20. Here we report the discovery of a fading radio counterpart. We began a monitoring program from 0.2GHz to 250GHz and obtained a high resolution 21-cm radio spectrum which traces the intervening interstellar neutral Hydrogen clouds. Analysis of the spectrum yields the first direct distance measurement of SGR 1806-20. The source is located at a distance greater than 6.4 kpc and we argue that it is nearer than 9.8 kpc. If true, our distance estimate lowers the total energy of the explosion and relaxes the demands on theoretical models. The energetics and the rapid decay of the radio source are not compatible with the afterglow model that is usually invoked for gamma-ray bursts. We present optical, near-IR, and radio follow up of sixteen Swift bursts, including our discovery of nine afterglows and a redshift determination for three. These observations, supplemented by data from the literature, provide an afterglow recovery rate of 60% in the optical/near-IR, much higher than in previous missions (BeppoSAX, HETE-2, INTEGRAL, and IPN). The optical/near-IR afterglows of Swift events are on average 1.7 mag fainter at t=12 hr than those of previous missions. The X-ray afterglows are similarly fainter compared to those of pre-Swift bursts. In the radio the limiting factor is the VLA threshold and the detection rate for Swift bursts is similar to that for past missions. The redshift distribution of pre-Swift bursts peaked at z~1, whereas the five Swift bursts with measured redshifts are distributed evenly between 1.3 and 3.2. From these results we conclude that (i) the pre-Swift distributions were biased in favor of bright events and low redshift events, (ii) the higher sensitivity and accurate positions of Swift result in a better representation of the true burst redshift and brightness distributions (which are higher and dimmer, respectively), and (iii) as many as 1/3 of the bursts can be optically dark, as a result of a high redshift and/or dust extinction. We remark that the apparent lack of low redshift, low luminosity Swift bursts, and the lower event rate compared to pre-launch estimates (90 vs. 150 per year), are the result of a threshold that is similar to that of BATSE. In view of these inferences, afterglow observers may find it advisable to make significant changes in follow up strategies of Swift events. The detection of the afterglow emission and host galaxies of short-hard gamma-ray bursts (SHBs) is one of the most exciting recent astronomical discoveries. Indications that SHB progenitors belong to old stellar populations, in contrast to those of the long-soft GRBs, provide a strong clue about their physical nature. Definitive conclusions however are limited by the small number of SHBs with known hosts. Here, we present our investigation of SHBs previously localized by the interplanetary network (IPN) using new and archival optical and X-ray observations. We show that we can likely identify the host galaxies/clusters for additional two bursts, significantly increasing the sample of SHBs with known hosts and/or distances. In particular, we determine that the bright SHB 790613 occurred within the rich galaxy cluster Abell 1892, making it probably the nearest SHB currently known. We show that the brightest galaxy within the error box of SHB 000607, at z=0.14, is most likely the host galaxy of this event. Additionally, we rule out the existence of galaxy overdensities (down to ~21mag) near the locations of two other SHBs, and set a lower limit on their probable redshift. We combine our SHB sample with events discovered recently by the Swift and HETE-2 missions, and investigate the properties of the extended sample. Comparison to SNe Ia shows that the progenitors of SHBs are typically older, implying a typical life time of several Gy. We also show that it is unlikely that there is a significant population of progenitors with life time shorter than 1Gy. Over the six years since the discovery of the gamma-ray burst GRB 980425, associated with the nearby (distance, ~40 Mpc) supernova 1998bw, astronomers have fiercely debated the nature of this event. Relative to bursts located at cosmological distances, (redshift, z~1), GRB 980425 was under-luminous in gamma-rays by three orders of magnitude. Radio calorimetry showed the explosion was sub-energetic by a factor of 10. Here, we report observations of the radio and X-ray afterglow of the recent z=0.105 GRB 031203 and demonstrate that it too is sub-energetic. Our result, when taken together with the low gamma-ray luminosity, suggest that GRB 031203 is the first cosmic analogue to GRB 980425. We find no evidence that this event was a highly collimated explosion viewed off-axis. Like GRB 980425, GRB 031203 appears to be an intrinsically sub-energetic gamma-ray burst. Such sub-energetic events have faint afterglows. Less than half of the SNRs within 5 kpc have identified central sources, and only three are identified as the remnants of Type Ia SNe. Here, we report a systematic effort to search for compact central sources in the remaining 23 SNRs of this distance limited sample. In this first paper we report Chandra observations of four SNRs. We have undertaken a systematic optical/IR identification program of the X-ray sources detected in the field of each SNR. Foreground and background sources have identifiable IR/optical counterparts, while the counterparts of neutron stars (or black holes) are expected to be very faint. We are able to account for all the well-detected X-ray sources and thus able to state with some confidence that there are no associated central sources down to a level of one tenth of that of the Cas A central source, L_X, 52 pages, 37 figures. It has been suggested that the peculiar properties of the luminous Type Ic supernova SN 1998bw and its low-energy gamma-ray burst GRB 980425 may be understood if they originated in a standard gamma-ray burst explosion viewed far from the axis of the relativistic jet. In this scenario, strong radio emission is predicted from the jet on a timescale 1 to 10 years after the explosion as it decelerates and spreads into our line of sight. To test this hypothesis we have carried out late-time radio observations of SN 1998bw at $t=5.6$ years, yielding upper limits which are consistent with the continued fading of the supernova. We find these limits to be consistent with an off-axis jet only if the progenitor mass loss rate is $\dot{M}\lesssim 4 \times 10^{-7}$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ (for a wind velocity $v_w=1000$ km s$^{-1}$) or the fraction of the shock energy in magnetic fields is $\epsilon_B \lesssim 10^{-3}$. These values are low relative to those inferred for cosmological GRBs. We combine the SN 1998bw measurements with existing observations for a sample of 15 local Type Ibc supernovae to estimate that at most 6% produce collimated, relativistic outflows., Comment: Revised version, as it appears in ApJL

We present a complete sample of 29 GRBs for which it has been possible to determine temporal breaks (or limits) from their afterglow light curves. We interpret these breaks within the framework of the uniform conical jet model, incorporating realistic estimates of the ambient density and propagating error estimates on the measured quantities. In agreement with our previous analysis of a smaller sample, the derived jet opening angles of those 16 bursts with redshifts result in a narrow clustering of geometrically-corrected gamma-ray energies about E_gamma = 1.33e51 erg; the burst-to-burst variance about this value is a factor of 2.2. Despite this rather small scatter, we demonstrate in a series of GRB Hubble diagrams, that the current sample cannot place meaningful constraints upon the fundamental parameters of the Universe. Indeed for GRBs to ever be useful in cosmographic measurements we argue the necessity of two directions. First, GRB Hubble diagrams should be based upon fundamental physical quantities such as energy, rather than empirically-derived and physically ill-understood distance indicators. Second, a more homogeneous set should be constructed by culling sub-classes from the larger sample. These sub-classes, though now first recognizable by deviant energies, ultimately must be identifiable by properties other than those directly related to energy. We identify a new sub-class of GRBs (``f-GRBs'') which appear both underluminous by factors of at least 10 and exhibit a rapid fading at early times. We employ a fireball model of the GRB explosion to constrain intrinsic and environmental parameters of four events with good broadband afterglow data; GRB970508, GRB980329, GRB980703, and GRB000926. Using standard assumptions of constant circumburst density and no evolution of the fraction of the explosion energy in the post-shock magnetic field, we investigate the uniformity of the derived explosion and shock physics parameters among the events. We find densities that range from those of the ISM to diffuse clouds, energies comparable to the total GRB gamma-ray energy, collimations from near-isotropy to 0.04 rad, substantial electron energy fractions of 10-30% with energy distribution indices of 2.1-2.9 and magnetic energy fractions from 0.2-25%. We also investigate the level to which the data constrain standard model assumptions, such as the magnetic field evolution, and the allowed density profiles of the medium. Fits generally improve slightly with an increasing magnetic energy fraction epB. Studies of the cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and their host galaxies are starting to provide interesting or even unique new insights in observational cosmology. GRBs represent a new way of identifying a population of star-forming galaxies at cosmological redshifts. GRB hosts are broadly similar to the normal field galaxy populations at comparable redshifts and magnitudes, and indicate at most a mild luminosity evolution out to z ~ 1.5 - 2. GRB optical afterglows seen in absorption provide a powerful new probe of the ISM in dense, central regions of their host galaxies, complementary to the traditional studies using QSO absorbers. Some GRB hosts are heavily obscured, and provide a new way to select a population of cosmological sub-mm sources, and a novel constraint on the total obscured fraction of star formation over the history of the universe. We present 1.4 GHz VLA observations of the variability of radio sources in the Lockman Hole region at the level of > 100 uJy on timescales of 17 months and 19 days. These data indicate that the areal density of highly variable sources at this level is < 0.005 arcmin^{-2}. We set an upper limit of 2% to the fraction of 50 to 100uJy sources that are highly variable (> 50%). These results imply a lower limit to the beaming angle for GRBs of 1deg, and give a lower limit of 200 arcmin^2 to the area that can be safely searched for GRB radio afterglows before confusion might become an issue., aastex 2 postscript figures. to appear in the Astrophysical Journal

Past studies suggest that long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have a standard energy of E_gamma ~ 10^51 erg in ultra-relativistic ejecta when corrected for asymmetry ("jets"). However, recently a group of sub-energetic bursts, including the peculiar GRB 980425 associated with SN 1998bw (E_gamma ~ 10^48 erg), has been identified. Here we report radio observations of GRB 030329, the nearest burst to date, which allow us to undertake calorimetry of the explosion. Our observations require a two-component explosion: a narrow (5 degrees) ultra-relativistic component responsible for the gamma-rays and early afterglow, and a wide, mildly relativistic component responsible for the radio and optical afterglow beyond 1.5 days. While the gamma-rays are energetically minor, the total energy release, dominated by the wide component, is similar to that of other GRBs. Given the firm link of GRB 030329 with SN 2003dh our result suggests a common origin for cosmic explosions in which, for reasons not understood, the energy in the highest velocity ejecta is highly variable, Comment: Accepted to Nature

GRB 010921 was the first HETE-2 GRB to be localized via its afterglow emission. The low-redshift of the host galaxy, z=0.451, prompted us to undertake intensive multi-color observations with the Hubble Space Telescope with the goal of searching for an underlying supernova component. We do not detect any coincident supernova to a limit 1.34 mag fainter than SN 1998bw at 99.7% confidence, making this one of the most sensitive searches for an underlying SN. Analysis of the afterglow data allow us to infer that the GRB was situated behind a net extinction (Milky Way and the host galaxy) of A_V ~ 1.8 mag in the observer frame. Thus, had it not been for such heavy extinction our data would have allowed us to probe for an underlying SN with brightness approaching those of more typical Type Ib/c supernovae., 18 pages, 1 figure. The gamma-ray burst GRB000210 had the highest gamma-ray peak flux of any event localized by BeppoSAX as yet but it did not have a detected optical afterglow. It is therefore one of the events recently classified as dark GRBs or GHOST (GRB Hiding Optical Source Transient), whose origin is still unclear. Chandra observations allowed us to localize this GRB within ~1" and a radio transient was detected with the VLA. We identify the likely (P=0.01) host galaxy of this burst at z=0.846. The X-ray spectrum of the afterglow shows intrinsic absorption N_H=5x10**21 cm-2. The amount of dust needed to absorb the optical flux of this object is consistent with the above HI column density, given a dust-to-gas ratio similar to that of our Galaxy. We do not find evidence for a partially ionized absorber expected if the absorption takes place in a Giant Molecular Cloud. We therefore conclude that either the gas is local to the GRB, but is condensed in small-scale high-density (n>~10**9 cm-3) clouds, or that the GRB is located in a dusty, gas-rich region of the galaxy. We present sequential optical spectra of the afterglow of GRB 010222 obtained one day apart using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (LRIS) and the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) on the Keck telescopes. Three low-ionization absorption systems are spectroscopically identified at z1=1.47688, z2=1.15628, and z3=0.92747. The higher resolution ESI spectrum reveals two distinct components in the highest redshift system at z1a=1.47590 and z1b=1.47688. We interpret the z1b=1.47688 system as an absorption feature of the disk of the host galaxy of GRB 010222. The best fitted power-law optical continuum and [Zn/Cr] ratio imply low dust content or a local gray dust component near the burst site. In addition, we do not detect strong signatures of vibrationally excited states of H_2. If the GRB took place in a superbubble or young stellar cluster, there are no outstanding signatures of an ionized absorber, either. Analysis of the spectral time dependence at low resolution shows no significant evidence for absorption-line variability. This lack of variability is confronted with time-dependent photoionization simulations designed to apply the observed flux from GRB 010222 to a variety of assumed atomic gas densities and cloud radii. The absence of time dependence in the absorption lines implies that high-density environments are disfavored. In particular, if the GRB environment was dust free, its density was unlikely to exceed nH=10^2 cm^-3. If depletion of metals onto dust is similar to Galactic values or less than solar abundances are present, then nH > 2 x 10^4 cm^-3 is probably ruled out in the immediate vicinity of the burst., 39 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Observations of GRB afterglows ranging from radio to X-ray frequencies generate large data sets. Careful analysis of these broad-band data can give us insight into the nature of the GRB progenitor population by yielding such information like the total energy of the burst, the geometry of the fireball and the type of environment into which the GRB explodes. We illustrate, by example, how global, self-consistent fits are a robust approach for characterizing the afterglow emission. This approach allows a relatively simple comparison of different models and a way to determine the strengths and weaknesses of these models, since all are treated self-consistently. Of all the well localized gamma-ray bursts, GRB 000911 has the longest duration (T_90 ~ 500 s), and ranks in the top 1% of BATSE bursts for fluence. Here, we report the discovery of the afterglow of this unique burst. In order to simultaneously fit our radio and optical observations, we are required to invoke a model involving an hard electron distribution, p ~ 1.5 and a jet-break time less than 1.5 day. A spectrum of the host galaxy taken 111 days after the burst reveals a single emission line, interpreted as [OII] at a redshift z = 1.0585, and a continuum break which we interpret as the Balmer limit at this redshift. Despite the long T_90, the afterglow of GRB 000911 is not unusual in any other way when compared to the set of afterglows studied to date. We conclude that the duration of the GRB plays little part in determining the physics of the afterglow., 14 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to ApJ

Observations of GRB host galaxies and their environments in general can provide valuable clues about the nature of progenitors. Bursts are associated with faint, ~ 25 mag, galaxies at cosmological redshifts, ~ 1. The host galaxies span a range of luminosities and morphologies, and appear to be broadly typical for the normal, evolving, actively star-forming galaxy populations at comparable redshifts and magnitudes, but may have somewhat elevated SFR per unit luminosity. There are also spectroscopic hints of massive star formation, from the ratios of [Ne III] and [O II] lines. The observed, unobscured star formation rates are typically a few M_sun/yr, but a considerable fraction of the total star formation in the hosts may be obscured by dust. A census of detected optical afterglows provides a powerful new handle on the obscured fraction of star formation in the universe; the current results suggest that at most a half of the massive star formation was hidden by dust., Comment: Invited review, latex, 8 pages with 3 eps figures, style files included. We present radio observations of GRB980703 at 1.43, 4.86, and 8.46 GHz for the period of 350 to 1000 days after the burst. These radio data clearly indicate that there is a persistent source at the position of GRB980703 with a flux density of approximately 70 $\mu$Jy at 1.43 GHz, and a spectral index, $\beta\approx 0.32$, where $F_\nu\propto \nu^{-\beta}$. We show that emission from the afterglow of GRB980703 is expected to be one to two orders of magnitude fainter, and therefore cannot account for these observations. We interpret this persistent emission as coming from the host galaxy --- the first example of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) host detection at radio wavelengths. We show that emission from an AGN is unlikely, and find that it can be explained as a result of a star-formation rate (SFR) of massive stars (M>5M$_\odot$) of 90 M$_\odot$/yr, which gives a total SFR of $\approx 500$ M$_\odot$/yr. Using the correlation between the radio and far-IR (FIR) luminosities of star-forming galaxies, we find that the host of GRB980703 is at the faint end of the class of Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), with L_{FIR}\sim few\times 10^{12} L$_\odot$. From the radio measurements of the offset between the burst and the host, and the size of the host, we conclude that GRB980703 occurred near the center of the galaxy in a region of maximum star formation. A comparison of the properties of this galaxy with radio and optical surveys at a similar redshift ($z\approx 1$) reveals that the host of GRB980703 is an average star-forming galaxy. This result has significant implications for the potential use of a GRB-selected galaxy sample for the study of galaxies and the IGM at high redshifts., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

GRB 000926 has one of the best-studied afterglows to-date, with multiple X-ray observations, as well as extensive multi-frequency optical and radio coverage. Broadband afterglow observations, spanning from X-ray to radio frequencies, provide a probe of the density structure of the circumburst medium, as well as of the ejecta energetics, geometry, and the physical parameters of the relativistic blastwave resulting from the explosion. We present an analysis of {\em Chandra X-ray Observatory} observations of this event, along with {\em Hubble Space Telescope} and radio monitoring. We combine these data with ground-based optical and IR observations and fit the synthesized afterglow lightcurve using models where collimated ejecta expand into a surrounding medium. We find that we can explain the broadband lightcurve with reasonable physical parameters only if the cooling is dominated by inverse Compton scattering. Excess X-ray emission in the broadband spectrum indicates that we are directly observing a contribution from inverse Compton scattering. It is the first time this has been observed in a GRB afterglow, and it implies that the GRB exploded in a reasonably dense (n~30 cm^{-3}) medium, consistent with a diffuse interstellar cloud environment., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Brown dwarfs are classified as objects which are not massive enough to sustain nuclear fusion of hydrogen, and are distinguished from planets by their ability to burn deuterium. Old (>10 Myr) brown dwarfs are expected to possess short-lived magnetic fields and, since they no longer generate energy from collapse and accretion, weak radio and X-ray emitting coronae. Several efforts have been undertaken in the past to detect chromospheric activity from the brown dwarf LP944-20 at X-ray and optical wavelengths, but only recently an X-ray flare from this object was detected. Here we report on the discovery of quiescent and flaring radio emission from this source, which represents the first detection of persistent radio emission from a brown dwarf, with luminosities that are several orders of magnitude larger than predicted from an empirical relation between the X-ray and radio luminosities of many stellar types. We show in the context of synchrotron emission, that LP944-20 possesses an unusually weak magnetic field in comparison to active dwarf M stars, which might explain the null results from previous optical and X-ray observations of this source, and the deviation from the empirical relations., Accepted to Nature

Afterglow, or long-lived emission, has now been detected from about a dozen well-positioned gamma-ray bursts. Distance determinations made by measuring optical emission lines from the host galaxy, or absorption lines in the afterglow spectrum, place the burst sources at significant cosmological distances, with redshifts ranging from ~1--3. The energy required to produce the bright gamma-ray flashes is enormous: up to ~10^{53} erg or 10 percent of the rest mass energy of a neutron star, if the emission is isotropic. Here we present the discovery of the optical afterglow and the redshift of GRB 990123, the brightest well-localized GRB to date. With our measured redshift of >1.6, the inferred isotropic energy release exceeds the rest mass of a neutron star thereby challenging current theoretical models for the origin of GRBs. We argue that the optical and IR afterglow measurements reported here may provide the first observational evidence of beaming in a GRB, thereby reducing the required energetics to a level where stellar death models are still tenable., Revised version (27 Feb 99). 19 pages, 3 figures. The optical transient of the faint Gamma Ray Burst 990308 was detected by the QUEST camera on the Venezuelan 1-m Schmidt telescope starting 3.28 hours after the burst. Our photometry gives $V = 18.32 \pm 0.07$, $R = 18.14 \pm 0.06$, $B = 18.65 \pm 0.23$, and $R = 18.22 \pm 0.05$ for times ranging from 3.28 to 3.47 hours after the burst. The colors correspond to a spectral slope of close to $f_�� \propto ��^{1/3}$. Within the standard synchrotron fireball model, this requires that the external medium be less dense than $10^{4} cm^{-3}$, the electrons contain $> 20%$ of the shock energy, and the magnetic field energy must be less than 24% of the energy in the electrons for normal interstellar or circumstellar densities. We also report upper limits of $V > 12.0$ at 132 s (with LOTIS), $V > 13.4$ from 132-1029s (with LOTIS), $V > 15.3$ at 28.2 min (with Super-LOTIS), and a 8.5 GHz flux of $< 114 ��Jy$ at 110 days (with the Very Large Array). WIYN 3.5-m and Keck 10-m telescopes reveal this location to be empty of any host galaxy to $R > 25.7$ and $K > 23.3$. Cosmic gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been firmly established as one of the most powerful phenomena in the Universe, releasing electromagnetic energy approaching the rest-mass energy of a neutron star in a few seconds. The two currently popular models for GRB progenitors are the coalescence of two compact objects (such as neutron stars or black holes) or collapse of a massive star. An unavoidable consequence of the latter model is that a bright supernovae should accompany the GRB. The emission from this supernova competes with the much brighter afterglow produced by the relativistic shock that gives rise to the GRB itself. Here we present evidence for an unusual light curve for GRB 980326 based on new optical observations. The transient brightened ~3 weeks after the burst to a flux sixty times larger than that extrapolated from the rapid decay seen at early time. Furthermore, the spectrum changed dramatically and became extremely red. We argue that the new source is the underlying supernova. If our hypothesis is true then this would be the first evidence for a supernova connection with GRBs at cosmological distances. Previous searches for radio pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) suggest that only the youngest and most energetic pulsars power PWN. However the selection effects associated with such searches are severe, in that emission from a faint compact PWN will be masked by that from its associated pulsar. This has motivated us to search for radio PWN using the technique of pulsar gating, which allows us to ``switch off'' the pulsed emission and see what is hidden underneath. This search has resulted in the detection of the faintest radio PWN yet discovered, while non-detections around other pulsars have implications for previous claims of nebular emission and for associations with nearby supernova remnants., 6 pages, 4 embedded PS figures. We report on the discovery of a variable radio source, VLA J070238.0+385044, associated with the proposed x-ray counterpart, 1SAX J0702.6+3850 of GRB 980329. The source was monitored from one day after the burst to one month later at centimeter wavelengths (1.4, 4.9, 8.3 and 15 GHz; Very Large Array -- VLA), and in the 3-mm band (90 GHz; Owen Valley Radio Observatory -- OVRO). Based on its variability, compactness and spectrum, we identify VLA J070238.0+385044 as the afterglow from GRB 980329. We interpret the rapid flux density variations as interstellar scintillation and the sharp turnover in the radio spectrum below 13 GHz as arising from synchrotron self-absorption. This suggests that the angular diameter of the fireball from GRB 980329 was of order a few microarcseconds in the first two weeks. The absence of a readily detectable afterglow in the optical, but clear detections in both the radio and infrared, can be understood as the result of extinction by dust. In this context it is interesting to note that half of all well-localized gamma-ray bursts have no optical counterpart. We present radio observations of the gamma-ray burster GRB 970228 made with the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) spanning a range of postburst timescales from one to 300 days. A search for a time-variable radio source was conducted covering an area which included a fading X-ray source and an optical transient, both of which are thought to be the long wavelength counterparts to the gamma-ray burst. At the position of the optical transient sensitive limits between 10 uJy and 1 mJy can be placed on the absence of a radio counterpart to GRB 970228 between 1.4 and 240 GHz. We apply a simple formulation of a fireball model which has been used with some success to reproduce the behavior of the optical and X-ray light curves. Using this model we conclude that the radio non-detections are consistent with the peak flux density of the afterglow lying between 20-40 uJy and it requires that the optical flux peaked between 4 and 16 hours after the burst., ApJ Let (submitted)

Soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGR) are a class of high energy transients whose brief emissions are thought to arise from young and highly magnetized neutron stars. The exact cause for these outbursts and the nature of the energy loss remain unknown. Here we report the discovery of a fading radio source within the localization of the relatively under-studied SGR 1900+14. We argue that this radio source is a short-lived nebula powered by the particles ejected during the intense high energy activity in late August 1998, which included the spectacular gamma-ray burst of August 27. The radio observations allow us to constrain the energy released in the form of particles ejected during the burst, un-complicated by beaming effects. Furthermore, thanks to the astrometric precision of radio observations, we have finally localized this repeater to sub-arcsecond accuracy., Comment: Nature, accepted, December 1998. We report the detection of OH satellite line masers at 1720 MHz and 1612 MHz from the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy M82. The observations were aimed at detecting 1720 MHz maser emission from the known radio emitting SNR in the nuclear region. At 1720 MHz we detect six features above the 5-sigma limit set by noise, four in emission and two in absorption. Three of the emission features appear closely associated with known discrete continuum radio sources, and one of the absorption features is precisely coincident with the discrete continuum source 44.01+59.6. The latter source also exhibits strong 1612 MHz emission at the same velocity. No other 1612 MHz features were detected. All of the 1720 MHz emission features are consistent with masers pumped by collisions with molecular hydrogen at densities between 10^3 cm^{-3} and 10^5 cm^{-3}, and T_k between 50 K and 250 K. The absorption and emission associated with the two satellite lines in 44.01+59.6, together with other evidence, points to the possibility that this source is the AGN in M82., Comment: accepted ApJL

We report on a comprehensive radio monitoring program of the bright gamma-ray burster GRB970111. These VLA observations were made at a frequency of 1.4 GHz and span a range of post-burst timescales between 28 hours and one month. Despite extensive sampling at sub-milliJansky sensitivities, no radio source was detected above 0.5 mJy in the current best error box (~14 arcmin^2) for GRB970111. A highly unusual radio source, VLA J1528.7+1945, was seen to drop in flux density by a factor of two in our monitoring period but it lies outside the error box and thus it is unlikely to be related to GRB970111. Cosmological fireball models of gamma-ray bursts make predictions of late-time emission occurring at longer wavelengths. The absence of a flaring or fading radio counterpart to GRB970111 provides strong constraints on these models., Comment: ApJ Let (accepted)

We report the results of radio flux-monitoring and high resolution observations at 3.6 cm with the VLA, of the central condensation in G10.0-0.3, the radio nebula surrounding the soft gamma ray repeater (SGR) 1806-20. The quiescent X-ray source AX1805.7-2025 is coincident with the radio core suggesting that G10.0-0.3 is a plerionic supernova remnant. The monitoring experiment was performed in 10 epochs spread over five months, starting just before the latest reactivation of SGR 1806-20 in gamma-rays. There is no apparent increase in the radio flux density from the central region of G10.0-0.3 on timescales of days to months following the gamma-ray bursts. At a resolution of 1 arcsec the peak region of G10.0-0.3 is seen to consist of a compact source with diffuse, one-sided emission, reminiscent of core-jet geometry seen in AGNs and some accreting Galactic binaries. By analogy with these latter sources, we argue that the SGR 1806-20 is coincident with the core component. If so, this is the first arcsecond localization of a high energy transient. The lack of radio variability and the low brightness temperature of the central component distinguish SGR 1806-20 from other accreting binaries. The structure of the high resolution radio image also does not particularly resemble that seen in the vicinity of young pulsars. Earlier we had suggested that G10.0-0.3, a non-thermal nebula, most likely an old supernova remnant (SNR), was associated with the soft gamma repeater (SGR) SGR 1806-20. Here we present new radio images obtained at the Very Large Array (VLA) of the non-thermal radio nebula G10.0-0.3. The nebula is a plerion with a hierarchy of nested amorphous components culminating in a peak. The recent dramatic detection of an X-ray point source coincident with the radio peak and a hard X-ray burst localized to G10.0-0.3 confirms the SNR-SGR association. We propose that the SGR is an isolated pulsar with both a steady and impulsive relativistic particle wind and these two together power the nebula. We note that both this SGR and SGR 0526-66 are offset from the centers of their SNRs which requires high space motion of the pulsar. We present the gamma-ray, X-ray, optical and radio data for GRB100814A. At the end of the slow decline phase of the X-ray and optical afterglow, a sudden and prominent rebrightening in the optical band occurs followed by a fast decay in both bands. This optical rebrightening is accompanied by possible chromatic variations. We discuss possible interpretations, such as double component scenarios and internal dissipation mechanism, with their virtues and drawbacks. We also compare GRB100814A with other Swift bursts that show optical rebrightenings with similar properties., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. We report the detection of a faint optical flash by the 2-m Faulkes Telescope North simultaneously with the second of two prompt gamma-ray pulses in INTEGRAL gamma-ray burst (GRB) 080603A, beginning at t_rest = 37 s after the onset of the GRB. This optical flash appears to be distinct from the subsequent emerging afterglow emission, for which we present comprehensive broadband radio to X-ray light curves to 13 days post-burst and rigorously test the standard fireball model. The intrinsic extinction toward GRB 080603A is high (A_V,z = 0.8 mag), and the well-sampled X-ray-to-near-infrared spectral energy distribution is interesting in requiring an LMC2 extinction profile, in contrast to the majority of GRBs. Comparison of the gamma-ray and extinction-corrected optical flux densities of the flash rules out an inverse-Compton origin for the prompt gamma-rays; instead, we suggest that the optical flash could originate from the inhomogeneity of the relativistic flow. In this scenario, a large velocity irregularity in the flow produces the prompt gamma-rays, followed by a milder internal shock at a larger radius that would cause the optical flash. Flat gamma-ray spectra, roughly F propto nu^-0.1, are observed in many GRBs. If the flat spectrum extends down to the optical band in GRB 080603A, the optical flare could be explained as the low-energy tail of the gamma-ray emission. If this is indeed the case, it provides an important clue to understanding the nature of the emission process in the prompt phase of GRBs and highlights the importance of deep (R> 20 mag), rapid follow-up observations capable of detecting faint, prompt optical emission., 22 pages, 11 figures, accepted to MNRAS
