We investigate the influence of three- and four-phonon scattering, perturbative anharmonic phonon renormalization, and off-diagonal terms of coherent phonons on the thermal conductivity of CsPbBr3 phase change perovskite, by using advanced implementations and first-principles simulations. Our study spans a wide temperature range covering the entire structural spectrum. Notably, we demonstrate that the interactions between acoustic and optical phonons result in contrasting trends of phonon frequency shifts for the high-lying optical phonons in orthorhombic and cubic CsPbBr3 as temperature varies. We report a local minimum in thermal conductivity in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at the angle of 1.08$^\circ$, which corresponds to the 'magic angle' in the transition of several other reported properties. Within the supercell of a moir\'e lattice, different stacking modes generate phonon scattering sites which reduce the thermal conductivity of TBG. The thermal magic angle arises from the competition between the delocalization of atomic vibrational amplitudes and stresses on one hand, and the increased AA stacking density on the other hand. The former effect weakens the scattering strength of a single scatterer while the latter one increases the density of scatterers. The combination of these two effects eventually leads to the apparition of the highlighted irregularity in heat conduction. We show that in multimode mechanical systems, the amplification of the lowest mode and the damping of all the other modes can be realized simultaneously via nonlinear feedback. The feedback-induced dynamics of the multimode system is related to the formation of phonon condensation. The phonon statistics of the lowest mode are similar to those of a phonon laser. Finally, we show the coherence of the lowest mode can be improved by an order of magnitude., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We propose that the optomechanical systems can be potential platforms to implement the Fr��hlich condensate of phonons. We consider a one-dimensional array of membranes coupled to the cavity field via a quadratic interaction, and the cavity is pumped by an external laser. Analytical and numerical results predict that the high phonon occupancy of the lowest or highest mechanical mode is achievable depending on the detuning of the driving laser, the optomechnical strength, and the temperature. The decoherence of the Fr��hlich condensate can be largely suppressed by the large number of membranes. Phononic metamaterials have attracted extensive attention since they are exibly adjustable to control the phonon transmission. In this work, we study a one-dimensional phononic metamaterial, made of mechanical resonant oscillators and chiral couplings. We show that by design, the oscillator mass and inter-oscillator coupling, although both are positive naturally, can be either single negative or double negative effectively within a certain frequency range. At the frequency where the effective mass and coupling are both infinite, a flat band emerges that will induce an extremely high density of states. At the critical point of band degeneracy, a Dirac-like point emerges where both effective mass and the inverse of effective coupling are simultaneously zero, so that zero index is realized for phonons. Moreover, the phononic topological phase transition is observed that the phononic band gap switches between single mass-negative and single coupling-negative regime. As a consequence, a topological interface state is identified, well explained by the theory.

We report phonon renormalization induced by an external electric field E in ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] nanofibers through measuring the E-dependent thermal conductivity. Our experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical ones derived from the lattice dynamics. The renormalization is attributed to the anharmonicity that modifies the phonon spectrum when the atoms are pulled away from their equilibrium positions by the electric field. Our finding provides an efficient way to manipulate the thermal conductivity by tuning external fields in ferroelectric materials.

Hotspot is a ubiquitous phenomenon in microdevices/chips. In homogeneous nanoscale graphene disk with a hotspot, a graded thermal conductivity is observed previously even when the system size is fixed. However, the underlying physical mechanism is not clear. In this work, the hotspots in homogeneous 2D disk/3D ball and graphene disk are studied based on phonon Boltzmann transport equation. The mechanisms of phonon scattering are analyzed. It is found that for a system with fixed size, the graded thermal conductivity is predictable as long as there is not sufficient phonon scattering, which is independent on material properties, dimensions or system size. Black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a promising candidate for next generation electronics and optoelectronics among the 2D family materials due to its extraordinary electrical/optical/optoelectronic properties. Interestingly, BP shows strong anisotropic transport behaviour because of its puckered honeycomb structure. Previous studies have demonstrated the thermal transport anisotropy of BP and theoretically attribute this to the anisotropy in both phonon dispersion relation and phonon relaxation time. However, the exact origin of such strong anisotropy lacks clarity and has yet to be proven experimentally. In this work, we probe the thermal transport anisotropy of BP nanoribbons (NRs) by an electron beam technique. We provide direct evidence that the origin of this anisotropy is dominated by the anisotropic phonon group velocity for the first time, verified by Young modulus measurements along different directions. It turns out that the ratio of thermal conductivity between zigzag (ZZ) and armchair (AC) ribbons is almost same as that of the corresponding Young modulus values. The results from first-principles calculation are consistent with this experimental observation, where anisotropic phonon group velocity between ZZ and AC is shown. In most systems, its division into interacting constituent elements gives rise to a natural network structure. Analyzing the dynamics of these elements and the topology of these natural graphs gave rise to the fields of (nonlinear) dynamics and network science, respectively. However, just as an object in a potential well can be described as both a particle (real space representation) and a wave (reciprocal or Fourier space representation), the `natural' network structure of these interacting constituent elements is not unique. In particular, in this work we develop a formalism for Fourier Transforming these networks to create a new class of interacting constituent elements $-$ the coupled wave network $-$ and discuss the nontrivial experimental realizations of these structures. This perspective unifies many previously distinct structures, most prominently the set of local nonlinear lattice models, and reveals new forms of order in nonlinear media. Following the emergence of many novel two-dimensional (2-D) materials beyond graphene, interest has grown in exploring implications for fundamental physics and practical applications, ranging from electronics, photonics, phononics, to thermal management and energy storage. In this Colloquium, we first summarize and compare the phonon properties, such as phonon dispersion and relaxation time, of pristine 2-D materials with single layer graphene to understand the role of crystal structure and dimension on thermal conductivity. We then compare the phonon properties, contrasting idealized 2-D crystals, realistic 2-D crystals, and 3-D crystals, and synthesizing this to develop a physical picture of how the sample size of 2-D materials affects their thermal conductivity. The effects of geometry, such as number of layers, and nanoribbon width, together with the presence of defects, mechanical strain, and substrate interactions, on the thermal properties of 2-D materials are discussed. Intercalation affects both the group velocities and phonon relaxation times of layered crystals and thus tunes the thermal conductivity along both the through-plane and basal-plane directions. We conclude with a discussion of the challenges in theoretical and experimental studies of thermal transport in 2-D materials. Although topological materials have recently seen tremendous development, their applications have remained elusive. Simultaneously, there exists considerable interest in pushing the limits of topological materials, including the exploration of new forms of topological protection and the establishment of topologically protected order in non-electronic systems. Here we develop some novel forms of topological order (i.e. topological charges), primarily the Euler characteristic as well as manifold class. We further demonstrate that these topological orders can protect bulk current transmission, even when the topologically trivial phase possesses an arbitrarily large band gap. Such a transition between topologically trivial, periodic dispersion and topologically non-trivial, aperiodic dispersion can be obtained by the anomalous Doppler shift of waves in a gapped periodic medium. Transformation media theory, which steers waves in solids via an effective geometry induced by a refractive material (Fermat's principle of least action), provides a means of controlling vibrations and elastic waves beyond the traditional dissipative structures regime. In particular, it could be used to create an elastic wave cloak, shielding an interior region against elastic waves while simultaneously preventing scattering in the outside domain. However, as a true elastic wave cloak would generally require nonphysical materials with stiffness tensors lacking the minor symmetry (implying asymmetric stress), the utility of such an elastic wave cloak has thus far been limited. Here we develop a means of overcoming this limitation via the development of a symmetrized elastic cloak, sacrificing some of the performance of the perfect cloak for the sake of restoring the minor symmetry. We test the performance of the symmetrized elastic cloak for shielding a tunnel against seismic waves, showing that it can be used to reduce the average displacement within the tunnel by an order of magnitude (and reduce energy by two orders of magnitude) for waves above a critical frequency of the cloak. This critical frequency, which corresponds to the generation of surface waves at the cloak-interior interface, can be used to develop a simple heuristic model of the symmetrized elastic cloak's performance for a generic problem.

Type-I clathrate compounds with off-center guest ions realize the phonon-glass electron-crystal concept by exhibiting almost identical lattice thermal conductivities $\kappa_{\rm L}$ to those observed in network-forming glasses. This is in contrast with type-I clathrates with on-center guest ions showing $\kappa_{\rm L}$ of conventional crystallines. Glasslike $\kappa_{\rm L}$ stems from the peculiar THz frequency dynamics in off-center type-I clathrates where there exist three kinds of modes classified into extended(EX), weakly(WL) and strongly localized(SL) modes as demonstrated by Liu $et.\,al.$, Phys. Rev. B $\textbf{93}$, 214305(2016). Our calculated results based on the hopping mechanism of SL modes via anharmonic interactions show fairly good agreement with observed ${\it T}$-linear rise of $\kappa_{\rm L}$ above the plateau. We emphasize that both the magnitude and the temperature dependence are in accord with the experimental data of off-center type-I clathrates.

Generating and detection coherent high-frequency heat-carrying phonons has been a great topic of interest in recent years. While there have been successful attempts in generating and observing coherent phonons, rigorous techniques to characterize and detect these phonon coherence in a crystalline material have been lagging compared to what has been achieved for photons. One main challenge is a lack of detailed understanding of how detection signals for phonons can be related to coherence. The quantum theory of photoelectric detection has greatly advanced the ability to characterize photon coherence in the last century and a similar theory for phonon detection is necessary. Here, we re-examine the optical sideband fluorescence technique that has been used detect high frequency phonons in materials with optically active defects. We apply the quantum theory of photodetection to the sideband technique and propose signatures in sideband photon-counting statistics and second-order correlation measurement of sideband signals that indicates the degree of phonon coherence. The needs for efficient heat removal and superior thermal conduction in nano/micro devices have triggered tremendous studies in low-dimensional materials with high thermal conductivity. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is believed to be one of the candidates for thermal management and heat dissipation due to its novel physical properties, i.e. thermal conductor and electrical insulator. Here we reported interfacial thermal resistance between few-layer h-BN and its silicon oxide substrate using differential 3 omega method. The measured interfacial thermal resistance is around ~1.6*10-8 m2K/W for monolayer h-BN and ~3.4*10-8 m2K/W for 12.8nm-thick h-BN in metal/h-BN/SiO2 interfaces. Our results suggest that the voids and gaps between substrate and thick h-BN flakes limit the interfacial thermal conduction. Porous materials provide a large surface to volume ratio, thereby providing a knob to alter fundamental properties in unprecedented ways. In thermal transport, porous nanomaterials can reduce thermal conductivity by not only enhancing phonon scattering from the boundaries of the pores and therefore decreasing the phonon mean free path, but also by reducing the phonon group velocity. Here we establish a structure-property relationship by measuring the porosity and thermal conductivity of individual electrolessly etched single crystalline silicon nanowires using a novel electron beam heating technique. Such porous silicon nanowires exhibit extremely low diffusive thermal conductivity (as low as 0.33 Wm-1K-1 at 300K for 43% porosity), even lower than that of amorphous silicon. The origin of such ultralow thermal conductivity is understood as a reduction in the phonon group velocity, experimentally verified by measuring the Young modulus, as well as the smallest structural size ever reported in crystalline Silicon (less than 5nm). Molecular dynamics simulations support the observation of a drastic reduction in thermal conductivity of silicon nanowires as a function of porosity. Such porous materials provide an intriguing platform to tune phonon transport, which can be useful in the design of functional materials towards electronics and nano-electromechanical systems.

An active swimmer can tow a passive cargo by binding it to form a self-propelling dimer. The orientation of the cargo relative to the axis of the active dimer's head is determined by the hydrodynamic interactions associated with the propulsion mechanism of the latter. We show how the tower-cargo angular configuration greatly influences the dimer's diffusivity and, therefore, the efficiency of the active swimmer as a micro-towing motor.

We present a general theory to explore energy transfer in nonequilibrium spin-boson models within the framework of nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF). In contrast to conventionally used NEGF methods based on a perturbation expansion in the system-bath coupling, we adopt the polaron transformation to the Hamiltonian and identify the tunneling term as a perturbation with the system-bath coupling being treated nonperturbatively, herein termed the polaron-transformed NEGF method. To evaluate terms in the Dyson series, we further utilize the Majorana-fermion representation. The proposed method not only allows us to deal with weak as well as strong coupling regime, but also enables an investigation on the role of bias. As an application of the method, we study the energy transfer between two Ohmic bosonic baths mediated by a spin. For a unbiased spin system, our energy current result smoothly bridges predictions of two benchmarks, namely, the quantum master equation and the nonequilibrium non-interacting blip approximation, thus our method is beyond existing theories. In case of a biased spin system, we reveal a bias-induced nonmomotonic behavior of the energy conductance in the intermediate coupling regime, due to the resonant character of the energy transfer. By using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations(NEMD), the modulation on temperature dependence of thermal conductivity of graphene phononic crystals (GPnCs) are investigated. It is found that the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity of GPnCs follows $T^{-\alpha}$ behavior. The power exponents ($\alpha$) can be efficiently tuned by changing the characteristic size of GPnCs. The phonon participation ratio spectra and dispersion relation reveal that the long-range phonon modes are more affected in GPnCs with larger size of holes ($L_0$). Our results suggest that constructing GPnCs is an effective method to manipulate the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity of graphene, which would be beneficial for developing GPnCs-based thermal management and signal processing devices., Comment: 16pages,4figures

In the study of 1D nonlinear Hamiltonian lattices, the conserved quantities play an important role in determining the actual behavior of heat conduction. Besides the total energy, total momentum and total stretch could also be conserved quantities. In microcanonical Hamiltonian dynamics, the total energy is always conserved. It was recently argued by Das and Dhar that whenever stretch (momentum) is not conserved in a 1D model, the momentum (stretch) and energy fields exhibit normal diffusion. In this work, we will systematically investigate the stretch diffusions for typical 1D nonlinear lattices. No clear connection between the conserved quantities and heat conduction can be established. A Stillinger-Weber interatomic potential is parameterized for phosphorene. It well reproduces the crystal structure, cohesive energy and phonon dispersion predicted by first-principles calculations. The thermal conductivity of phosphorene is further explored by equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations adopting the optimal set of potential parameters. At room temperature, the intrinsic thermal conductivities along zigzag and armchair directions are about 152.7 and 33.0 W/mK, respectively, with a large anisotropy ratio of five. The remarkably directional dependence of thermal conductivity in phosphorene, consistent with previous reports, is mainly due to the strong anisotropy of phonon group velocities, and weak anisotropy of phonon lifetimes as revealed by lattice dynamics calculations. Moreover, the effective phonon mean free paths at zigzag and armchair directions are about 141.4 and 43.4nm, respectively., Comment: accepted by J. Appl. Phys

We introduce a novel ultra-compact nanocapacitor of coherent phonons formed by high-finesse interference mirrors based on atomic-scale semiconductor metamaterials. Our molecular dynamics simulations show that the nanocapacitor stores THz monochromatic lattice waves, which can be used for phonon lasing - the emission of coherent phonons. Either one- or two-color phonon lasing can be realized depending on the geometry of the nanodevice. The two color regimes of the capacitor originates from the distinct transmittance dependance on the phonon wave packet incident angle for the two phonon polarizations at their respective resonances. Phonon nanocapacitor can be charged by cooling the sample equilibrated at room temperature or by the pump-probe technique. The nanocapacitor can be discharged by applying tunable reversible strain, resulting in the emission of coherent THz acoustic beams., 12 pages, 5 figures

Recent research on the development of a thermal cloak has concentrated on engineering an inhomogeneous thermal conductivity and homogeneous volumetric heat capacity. While the perfect cloak of inhomogeneous $\kappa$ and $\rho c_p$ is known to be exact (no signals scattering or penetrating to the cloak's interior), no such analysis has been considered for this case. Using analytic, computational, and experimental techniques, we demonstrate that these approximate cloaks are detectable. Although they work as perfect cloaks in the steady-state, their transient (time-dependent) response is imperfect and a detectable amount of heat is scattered. This is sufficient to determine the presence of a cloak and any heat source it contains, but the material composition hidden within the cloak is not detectable in practice.

In this letter, we investigate numerically (by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics) and analytically the thermal conductivity of nanoscale graphene disks (NGDs), and discussed the possibility to realize FGM with only one material, NGDs. We found that the NGD has a graded thermal conductivity and can be used as FGM in a large temperature range. Moreover, we show the dependent of NGDs' thermal conductivity on radius and temperature. Our study may inspire experimentalists to develop NGD based FGMs and help heat removal of hot spots on chips by graphene.

Thermal conductivity of single layer black phosphorus (BP) is investigated by combining density functional calculations and Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation. Differing from isotropic and divergent thermal conductivities in two-dimensional graphene and MoS$_2$, an compelling co-existence of size-dependent and size-independent thermal conductivities are discovered for single layer BP along zigzag (ZZ) and armchair (AM) direction, respectively. Besides, thermal conductivities in single layer BP are found to be highly anisotropic because of orientation dependent group velocities, e.g., thermal conductivities at 300 K are 83.5 and 24.3 W/m-K along ZZ and AM directions for single layer BP with a size of 10 $\mu m$, respectively., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures;reference updated

We propose a new type of the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) emerging from the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in asymmetric four-terminal electron systems. This system generates spin currents or spin voltages along the longitudinal direction parallel to the temperature gradient in the absence of magnetic fields. The remarkable result arises from the breaking of reflection symmetry along the transverse direction. In the meantime, the SSE along the transverse direction, so-called the spin Nernst effect, with spin currents or spin voltages perpendicular to the temperature gradient can be simultaneously realized in our system. We further find that it is possible to use the temperature differences between four leads to tune the spin Seebeck coefficients., 14 pages, 4 figures

The thermoelectric properties of n type nanoscale three dimensional (3D) Si phononic crystals (PnCs) with spherical pores are studied. Density functional theory and Boltzmann transport equation under the relaxation time approximation are applied to study the electronic transport coefficients, electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and electronic thermal conductivity. We found that the electronic transport coefficients in 3D Si PnC at room temperature (300 K) change very little compared with that of Si, for example, electrical conductivity and electronic thermal conductivity is decreased by 0.26 to 0.41 and 0.39 to 0.55 depending on carrier concentration, respectively, and the Seebeck coefficient is similar to that of bulk Si. However, the lattice thermal conductivity of 3D Si PnCs with spherical pores is decreased by a factor of 500 calculated by molecular dynamics methods, leading to the ZT of 0.76, which is about 30 times of that of porous Si. Using the phenomenon of extraordinary sound transmission (EST) through artificially constructed density-near-zero (DNZ) materials, we propose an alternative approach to realize a very robust acoustic cloaking, which includes one absorber and one projector connected by an energy channel. The elementary unit cell is made of one single-piece homogeneous copper, but it well maintains both the original planar wavefront and the nearly perfect one-dimensional transmission, in the presence of any inserted objects. Furthermore, the overall cloaked space can be increased, designed, and distributed by arbitrarily assembling additional DNZ cells without any upper limit in the total cloaking volume. We demonstrate acoustic cloaking by different combinations of DNZ cells in free space as well as in acoustic waveguides, which enables any objects inside the cells imperceptible along undistorted sound paths.

Invisibility has attracted intensive research in various communities, e.g., optics, electromagnetics, acoustics, thermodynamics, etc. However, the most of them have only been experimentally achieved by virtue of simplified approaches due to their inhomogeneous and extreme parameters imposed by transformation-optic method, and usually require challenging realization with metamaterials. In this paper, we demonstrate an advanced bilayer thermal cloak with naturally available materials first time. This scheme, directly from thermal conduction equation, has been validated as an exact cloak rather than a reduced one, and we experimentally confirmed its perfect performance (heat-front maintenance and heat protection) in an actual setup. The proposed scheme may open a new avenue to control the diffusive heat flow in ways inconceivable with phonons.

Invisible cloak has long captivated the popular conjecture and attracted intensive research in various communities of wave dynamics, e.g., optics, electromagnetics, acoustics, etc. However, their inhomogeneous and extreme parameters imposed by transformation-optic method will usually require challenging realization with metamaterials, resulting in narrow bandwidth, loss, polarization-dependence, etc. On the contrary, we demonstrate that tunable thermodynamic cloak can be achieved with homogeneous and finite conductivity only employing naturally available materials. The controlled localization of thermal distribution inside the coating layer has been presented, and it shows that an incomplete cloak can function perfectly. Practical realization of such homogeneous thermal cloak has been suggested by using two naturally occurring conductive materials, which provides an unprecedentedly plausible way to flexibly realize flexible thermal cloak and manipulate thermal flow., 12 pages, 4 figures

The thermal conductivity of nanostructures needs to be as small as possible so that it will have a greater efficiency for solid-state electricity generation/refrigeration by thermoelectrics. We studied how the period length and the mass ratio affect the thermal conductivity of isotopic nanoscale 3D phononic crystal of Si. Simulation results by equilibrium molecular dynamics show isotopic nanoscale 3D phononic crystal can make a significance reduction on the thermal conductivity of bulk Si at high temperature,1000 K. Size and mass effects are obvious in manipulating thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity decreases as the period length and mass ratio increases. The phonon dispersion curves show the decrease of group velocities in 3D phononic crystals. The phonon's localization and band gap is clearly shown in spectra of normalized inverse participation ratio in nanoscale 3D phononic crystal structure., accepted by Scientific Reports

The form of energy termed heat that typically derives from lattice vibrations, i.e. the phonons, is usually considered as waste energy and, moreover, deleterious to information processing. However, with this colloquium, we attempt to rebut this common view: By use of tailored models we demonstrate that phonons can be manipulated like electrons and photons can, thus enabling controlled heat transport. Moreover, we explain that phonons can be put to beneficial use to carry and process information. In a first part we present ways to control heat transport and how to process information for physical systems which are driven by a temperature bias. Particularly, we put forward the toolkit of familiar electronic analogs for exercising phononics; i.e. phononic devices which act as thermal diodes, thermal transistors, thermal logic gates and thermal memories, etc.. These concepts are then put to work to transport, control and rectify heat in physical realistic nanosystems by devising practical designs of hybrid nanostructures that permit the operation of functional phononic devices and, as well, report first experimental realizations. Next, we discuss yet richer possibilities to manipulate heat flow by use of time varying thermal bath temperatures or various other external fields. Sun et al. provided an insightful comment arXiv:1108.5739v1 on our manuscript entitled "Controllability of Complex Networks with Nonlinear Dynamics" on arXiv. We agree on their main point that linearization about locally desired states can be violated in general by the breakdown of local control of the linearized complex network with nonlinear state. Therefore, we withdraw our manuscript. However, other than nonlinear dynamics, our claim that a single-node-control can fully control the general bidirectional/undirected linear network with 1D self-dynamics is still valid, which is similar to (but different from) the conclusion of arXiv:1106.2573v3 that all-node-control with a single signal can fully control any direct linear network with nodal-dynamics (1D self-dynamics)., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the authors. We study heat conduction and diffusion in silicon nanowires (SiNWs) systematically by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics. It is found that the thermal conductivity of SiNWs diverges with the length, even when the length is up to 1,100 nm which is much longer than the phonon mean free path. Moreover, an anomalous heat diffusion is observed which is believed to be responsible for the length dependent thermal conductivity. Our results provide strong evidence that Fourier's law of heat conduction is not valid in low dimensional nanostructures., 18 pages, 4 figures. We report the first temperature dependent phonon transport measurements in suspended Cu-CVD single layer graphene (SLG) from 15K to 380K using microfabricated suspended devices. The thermal conductance per unit cross section $\sigma$/A increases with temperature and exhibits a peak near T~280K ($\pm$10K) due to the Umklapp process. We investigate anomalous energy transport processes in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam $��$ lattice. They are determined by the maximum sound velocity of the relevant weakly damped energy carriers. That velocity can be numerically resolved by measuring the propagating fronts of the correlation functions of energy/momentum fluctuations at different times. The numerical results are compared with the predictions for solitons and effective (renormalized) phonons, respectively. Excellent agreement has been found for the prediction of effective long wavelength phonons, giving strong evidence that the energy carriers should be effective phonons rather than solitons., 4 pages, 5 figures

We investigate directed thermal heat flux across 1D homogenous nonlinear lattices when no net thermal bias is present on average. A nonlinear lattice of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-type or Lennard-Jones-type system is connected at both ends to thermal baths which are held at the same temperature on temporal average. We study two different modulations of the heat bath temperatures, namely: (i) a symmetric, harmonic ac-driving of temperature of one heat bath only and (ii) a harmonic mixing drive of temperature acting on both heat baths. While for case (i) an adiabatic result for the net heat transport can be derived in terms of the temperature dependent heat conductivity of the nonlinear lattice a similar such transport approach fails for the harmonic mixing case (ii). Then, for case (ii), not even the sign of the resulting Brownian motion induced heat flux can be predicted a priori. A non-vanishing heat flux (including a non-adiabatic reversal of flux) is detected which is the result of an induced dynamical symmetry breaking mechanism in conjunction with the nonlinearity of the lattice dynamics. Computer simulations demonstrate that the heat flux is robust against an increase of lattice sizes. The observed ratchet effect for such directed heat currents is quite sizable for our studied class of homogenous nonlinear lattice structures, thereby making this setup accessible for experimental implementation and verification., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures. The nonequilibrium Green's function method is applied to investigate the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and graphene. It is found that atoms deviate about 1% from equilibrium positions at T=0 K, resulting from the interplay between quantum zero-point motion and nonlinear interaction. The CTE in SWCNT of different sizes is studied and analyzed in terms of the competition between various vibration modes. As a result of this competition, the axial CTE is positive in the whole temperature range, while the radial CTE is negative at low temperatures. In graphene, the CTE is very sensitive to the substrate. Without substrate, CTE has large negative region at low temperature and very small value at high temperature limit, and the value of CTE at T=300 K is $-6\times 10^{-6}$ K$^{-1}$ which is very close to recent experimental result, $-7\times 10^{-6}$ K$^{-1}$ (Nat. Nanotechnol. \textbf{10}, 1038 (2009)). A very weak substrate interaction (about 0.06% of the in-plane interaction) can largely reduce the negative CTE region and greatly enhance the value of CTE. If the substrate interaction is strong enough, the CTE will be positive in whole temperature range and the saturate value at high temperature reaches $2.0\times 10^{-5}$ K$^{-1}$., Comment: final version, to appear in PRB

Thermal transistor is an efficient heat control device which can act as a heat switch as well as a heat modulator. In this paper, we study systematically one-dimensional and two-dimensional thermal transistors. In particular, we show how to improve significantly the efficiency of the one-dimensional thermal transistor. The study is also extended to the design of two-dimensional thermal transistor by coupling different anharmonic lattices such as the Frenkel-Kontorova and the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices. Analogy between anharmonic lattices and single-walled carbon nanotube is drawn and possible experimental realization with multi-walled nanotube is suggested., To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jpn

We study vibrational energy transport in a quasi 1-D harmonic chain with both longitudinal and transverse vibrations. We demonstrate via both numerical simulation and theoretic analysis that for 1-D atomic chain connected by 3D harmonic springs, the coefficient of heat conduction changes it continuously with its lattice constant, indicating the qualitative difference from the corresponding 1-D case where the coefficient is independent of the lattice constant., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We study the dynamics of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a toroidal trap and exposed to a pair of periodically flashed optical lattices. We first prove that in the noninteracting case this system can present a quantum symmetry which forbids the ratchet effect classically expected. We then show how many-body atom-atom interactions, treated within the mean-field approximation, can break this quantum symmetry, thus generating directed transport., 4 pages, 4 figures

We investigate fidelity, the Loschmidt echo, for a Bose-Einstein Condensate. It is found that the fidelity decays with time in various ways (exponential, Gaussian, and power-law), depending on the choice of initial coherent state as well as the parameters that determine properties of the underlying classical dynamics. Moreover, high fidelity is found for initial states lying in the regular region of a mixed-type phase space. A possible experimental scheme is suggested., 5 pages and 6 figures

We study the dependence of thermal conductivity of single walled nanotubes (SWNT) on chirality and isotope impurity by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method with accurate potentials. It is found that, contrary to electronic conductivity, the thermal conductivity is insensitive to the chirality. The isotope impurity, however, can reduce the thermal conductivity up to 60% and change the temperature dependence behavior. We theoretically demonstrate that at a finite temperature, an effective wall thickness of a single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) should be $W=W_s+W_d$, where $W_s$ is the static thickness defined as the extension of the outmost electronic orbit and $W_d$ the dynamic thickness due to thermal vibration of atoms. Both molecular simulations and a theoretical analysis show that $W_d$ is proportional to $\sqrt{T}$. We find that the increase of dynamic thickness with temperature is the main mechanism of Raman spectrum shift. We study heat conduction in a one-dimensional chain of particles with longitudinal as well as transverse motions. The particles are connected by two-dimensional harmonic springs together with bending angle interactions. Using equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics, three types of thermal conducting behaviors are found: a logarithmic divergence with system sizes for large transverse coupling, 1/3 power-law at intermediate coupling, and 2/5 power-law at low temperatures and weak coupling. The results are consistent with a simple mode-coupling analysis of the same model. The 1/3 power-law divergence should be a generic feature for models with transverse motions., 4 pages

In his comment, Dhar (cond-mat/0106349) claims that the existence and uniqueness of a nonequilibrium stationary state has been proved by Lebowitz et al. We should point out that our observation does not contradict the proof. They have only proved that when a (mass) disordered harmonic chain is placed in contact with stochastic reservoirs of the Langevin type, a nonequilibrium stationary state can be reached. However, they didn't prove the existence and uniqueness of the nonequilibrium stationary state for the general case, namely, when the chain is in contact with general thermostated reservoirs (see Bonneto et al. math-ph/0002052)., Comment: 2 pages, accepted for publication in PRL

We study the transmission coefficient of a plane wave through a 1D finite quasi-periodic system -- the Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model -- embedding in an infinite uniform harmonic chain. By varying the mass of atoms in the infinite uniform chain, we obtain the transmission coefficients for {\it all} eigenfrequencies. The phonon localization of the incommensurated FK chain is also studied in terms of the transmission coefficients and the Thouless exponents. Moreover, the heat conduction of Rubin-Greer-like model for FK chain at low temperature is calculated. We study quantum chaos in a non-KAM system, i.e. a kicked particle in a one-dimensional infinite square potential well. Within the perturbative regime the classical phase space displays stochastic web structures, and the diffusion coefficient D in the regime increases with the perturbative strength K giving a scaling $D \propto K^{2.5}$, and in the large K regime D goes as K^2. Quantum mechanically, we observe that the level spacing statistics of the quasi eigenenergies changes from Poisson to Wigner distribution as the kick strength increases. The quasi eigenstates show power-law localization in the small K region, which become extended one at large K.
