In order to study the novel gas detection or sensing applications of gallium nitride monolayer (GaN-ML), we mainly focused on the structural, energetic, electronic and magnetic properties of toxic gas molecules (CO, NO) adsorbed on pristine, single vacancy (N-vacancy, Ga-vacancy) defected, and metals (Al, Fe, Pd and Pt) doped GaN-ML using density functional theory (DFT-D2 method) in this work. The calculations demonstrate that pristine GaN-ML is extremely insensitive to CO and NO together with the existence of a weak physisorption nature due to small adsorption energy, charge transfer, and long adsorption distance. It is found that both N-vacancy defected GaN-ML and Fe-doped GaN-ML can significantly increase the adsorption energy and charge transfer for CO. The CO adsorption induces the metallic characteristics of N-vacancy GaN-ML to be converted to the half-metallic characteristics together with 100% spin polarization, and it also drastically changes the magnetic moment, implying that N-vacancy GaN-ML exhibits excellent sensitivity to CO. However, Fe-doped GaN-ML is not conducive to CO detection. Moreover, N-vacancy defected and Pt-doped GaN-ML greatly improve the adsorption ability for NO compared to other substrates, and the presence of stronger orbital hybridization suggests that the interaction between them is chemisorption. Therefore, N-vacancy defected GaN-ML and Pt-doped GaN-ML can serve as potential materials in future NO sensing devices., 24 pages, 2 tables, 8 figures

Recently, unconventional topological quasiparticles have been attracting significant research interest in condensed matter physics. Here, based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we reveal the coexistence of multiple types of interesting unconventional topological quasiparticles in the phonon spectrum of chiral crystal CsBe$_2$F$_5$. Specifically, we identified eight entangled phonon bands in CsBe$_2$F$_5$, which gave rise to various unconventional topological quasiparticles, including the spin-1 Weyl point, the charge-2 Dirac point, the nodal surface, and the novel hourglass nodal loop. We demonstrate that these unconventional topological quasiparticles are protected by crystal symmetry. We show that there are two large Fermi arcs connecting projections of the bulk spin-1 Weyl point and charge-2 Dirac point on the (001) surface and across the entire surface Brillouin zone (BZ). Our work not only elucidate the intriguing topological properties of chiral crystals but also provides an excellent material platform for exploring the fascinating physics associated with multiple types of unconventional topological quasiparticles., 5 pages, 4 figures

Time-ordered data (TOD) from ground-based CMB experiments are generally filtered before map-making to remove or reduce the contamination from the ground and the atmospheric emissions. However, when the observation region contains strong point sources, the filtering process will result in considerable leakage around the point sources in a measured CMB map, and leave spurious polarization signals. Therefore, such signals need to be assessed and removed before CMB science exploitation. In this work, we present a new method that we call "template fitting" and can effectively remove these leakage signals in pixel domain, not only satisfying the requirement for measuring primordial gravitational waves from CMB-$B$ modes, but also avoiding time-consuming operations on TOD., 13pages, 6 figures, 5 tables

Qudits with a large Hilbert space to host quantum information are widely utilized in various applications, such as quantum simulation and quantum computation, but the manipulation and scalability of qudits still face challenges. Here, we propose a scheme to directly and locally transfer quantum information from multiple atomic qubits to a single qudit and vice versa in an optical cavity. With the qubit-qudit interaction, our scheme can transfer quantum states efficiently and measurement-independently. In addition, this scheme can be extended to the non-local case, where a high-dimensional maximal entangled state with asymmetric particle numbers can be robustly generated for realizing long-distance quantum communication. Such an information interface for qubits and qudit may have enlightening significance for future research on quantum systems in hybrid dimensions., 12 pages, 5 figures

Recent experiments have demonstrated interesting physics in a family of two-dimensional (2D) composition-tunable materials Nb$_{2n+1}$Si$_n$Te$_{4n+2}$. Here, we show that owing to its intrinsic low symmetry, metallic nature, tunable composition, and ambient stability, these materials offer a good platform for studying Berry curvature dipole (BCD) and nonlinear Hall effect. Using first-principles calculations, we find that BCD exhibits pronounced peaks in monolayer Nb$_{3}$SiTe$_{6}$ ($n=1$ case). Its magnitude decreases monotonically with $n$ and completely vanishes in the $n\rightarrow\infty$ limit. This variation manifests a special hidden dimensional crossover of the low-energy electronic states in this system. The resulting nonlinear Hall response from BCD in these materials is discussed. Our work reveals pronounced geometric quantities and nonlinear transport physics in Nb$_{2n+1}$Si$_n$Te$_{4n+2}$ family materials, which should be readily detected in experiment., 8 pages, 7 figures and 1 table

The lensing effect of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is a powerful tool for our study of the distribution of matter in the universe. Currently, the quadratic estimator (EQ) method, which is widely used to reconstruct lensing potential, has been known to be sub-optimal for the low-noise levels polarization data from next-generation CMB experiments. To improve the performance of the reconstruction, other methods, such as the maximum likelihood estimator and machine learning algorithms are developed. In this work, we present a deep convolutional neural network model named the Residual Dense Local Feature U-net (RDLFUnet) for reconstructing the CMB lensing convergence field. By simulating lensed CMB data with different noise levels to train and test network models, we find that for noise levels less than $5\mu$K-arcmin, RDLFUnet can recover the input gravitational potential with a higher signal-to-noise ratio than the previous deep learning and the traditional QE methods at almost the entire observation scales., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ

Band structure for a crystal generally consists of connected components in energy-momentum space, known as band complexes. Here, we explore a fundamental aspect regarding the maximal number of bands that can be accommodated in a single band complex. We show that in principle a band complex can have no finite upper bound for certain space groups. It means infinitely many bands can entangle together, forming a connected pattern stable against symmetry-preserving perturbations. This is demonstrated by our developed inductive construction procedure, through which a given band complex can always be grown into a larger one by gluing a basic building block to it. As a by-product, we demonstrate the existence of arbitrarily large accordion type band structures containing $N_C=4n$ bands, with $n\in\mathbb{N}$., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Strongly correlated states are commonly emerged in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with magic-angle, where the electron-electron (e-e) interaction U becomes prominent relative to the small bandwidth W of the nearly flat band. However, the stringent requirement of this magic angle makes the sample preparation and the further application facing great challenges. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS), we demonstrate that the correlation-induced symmetry-broken states can also be achieved in a 3.45{\deg} TBG, via engineering this non-magic-angle TBG into regimes of U/W > 1. We enhance the e-e interaction through controlling the microscopic dielectric environment by using a MoS2 substrate. Simultaneously, the bandwidth of the low-energy van Hove singularity (VHS) peak is reduced by enhancing the interlayer coupling via STM tip modulation. When partially filled, the VHS peak exhibits a giant splitting into two states flanked the Fermi level and shows a symmetry-broken LDOS distribution with a stripy charge order, which confirms the existence of strong correlation effect in our 3.45{\deg} TBG. Our result paves the way for the study and application of the correlation physics in TBGs with a wider range of twist angle.

Primordial B-mode detection is one of the main goals of next-generation cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. Primordial B-modes are a unique signature of primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). However, the gravitational interaction of CMB photons with large-scale structures will distort the primordial E modes, adding a lensing B-mode component to the primordial B-mode signal. Removing the lensing effect (`delensing') from observed CMB polarization maps will be necessary to improve the constraint of PGWs and obtain a primordial E-mode signal. Here, we introduce a deep convolutional neural network model named multi-input multi-output U-net (MIMO-UNet) to perform CMB delensing. The networks are trained on simulated CMB maps with size $20^{\circ} \times 20^{\circ}$. We first use MIMO-UNet to reconstruct the unlensing CMB polarization ($Q$ and $U$) maps from observed CMB maps. The recovered E-mode power spectrum exhibits excellent agreement with the primordial EE power spectrum. The recovery of the primordial B-mode power spectrum for noise levels of 0, 1, and 2 $μ$K-arcmin is greater than 98\% at the angular scale of $\ell200$. We delens observed B-mode power spectrum by subtracting reconstructed lensing B-mode spectrum. We introduce a notion of quadratic duality for chiral algebras. This can be viewed as a chiral version of the usual quadratic duality for quadratic associative algebras. We study the relationship between this duality notion and the Maurer-Cartan equations for chiral algebras, which turns out to be parallel to the associative algebra case. In long-wavelength moir\'e superlattices of stacked transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), structural reconstruction ubiquitously occurs, which has reported to impact significantly their electronic properties. However, complete microscopic understandings of the interplay between the lattice reconstruction and alteration of electronic properties, and their further response to external perturbations in the reconstructed TMDs moir\'e superlattice are still lacking. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) combined with first-principles calculation, we study the strain-dependent structural reconstruction and its correlated electronic reconstruction in long-wavelength H-type WS$_{2}$ moir\'e superlattice at nanometer scale. We observe that the long-wavelength WS$_{2}$ moir\'e superlattices experiencing strong atomic reconstruction transform into a hexagonal array of screw dislocations separating large-sized H-stacked domains. Both the geometry and the moir\'e wavelength of the moir\'e superlattice are dramatically tuned by external intralayer heterostrain in our experiment. Remarkably, the STS measurements further demonstrate that the location of the K point in conduction band is modulated sensitively by strain-induced lattice deformation at nanometer scale in this system, with the maximum energy shift reaching up to 300 meV. Our results highlight that intralayer strain plays a vital role in determining structural and electronic properties in TMD moir\'e superlattice.

The Internal Linear Combination (ILC) is widely used to extract the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal from multi-frequency observation maps, especially for Satellite experiments with quasi-full sky coverage. We extend ILC method to CMB polarization map analysis with a small sky patch which is especially typical for ground-based experiments, by combing ILC with a template cleaning method which can give pure B map free from EB leakage caused by partial sky coverage. The feature of our methods is that we do the ILC analysis on pseudo-scalar B maps, and the advantage is that it totally avoids the impact of EB leakage on ILC, so that it can improve the efficiency of component separation dramatically. We demonstrate our methods with mock data of a future ground-based experiment with a deep survey on a clean patch in the northern sky, and the results show that the level of foreground residual can be well controlled, it biases the tensor to scalar ratio (r) at the order of 10-3 which is comparable to the statistical error by noise.

Among the most promising terahertz (THz) radiation devices, gyrotrons can generate powerful THz-wave radiation in an open resonant structure. Unfortunately, such an oscillation using high-Q axial mode has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated to suffer from strong ohmic losses. In this paper, a solution to such a challenging problem is to include a narrow belt of lossy section in the interaction circuit to stably constitute the traveling wave interaction (high-order-axial-mode, HOAM), and employ a down-tapered magnetic field to amplify the forward-wave component. A scheme based on the traveling-wave interaction concept is proposed to strengthen electron beam-wave interaction efficiency and simultaneously reduce the ohmic loss in a 1-THz third harmonic gyrotron, which is promising for further advancement of high-power continuous-wave operation.

Trace map on deformation quantized algebra leads to the algebraic index theorem. In this paper, we investigate a two-dimensional chiral analogue of the algebraic index theorem via the theory of chiral algebras developed by Beilinson and Drinfeld. We construct a trace map on the elliptic chiral homology of the free beta gamma-bc system using the BV quantization framework. As an example, we compute the trace evaluated on the unit constant chiral chain and obtain the formal Witten genus in the Lie algebra cohomology. Chiral phonons were initially proposed and further verified experimentally in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal crystal lattices. Many intriguing features brought about by chiral phonons are attributed to the pseudo-angular momenta which are associated with the threefold rotational symmetry of hexagonal lattices. Here, we go beyond the hexagonal crystals and investigate the chiral phonons in systems with fourfold rotational symmetry. We clarify the symmetry requirements for the emergence of chiral phonons in both 2D square lattices and 3D tetragonal lattices. For 2D, the realization of $C_4$ chiral phonons requires the breaking of time-reversal symmetry; while for 3D, they can exist on the $C_4$-invariant path in a chiral tetragonal lattice. These phonons have the advantage that they can be more readily coupled with optical transitions, which facilitates their experimental detection. We demonstrate our idea via model analysis and first-principles calculations of concrete materials, including the MnAs monolayer and the $\alpha$-cristobalite. Our work reveals chiral phonons beyond the hexagonal lattices and paves the way for further exploration of chiral phonon physics in square/tetragonal materials and metamaterials., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) is the first CMB degree-scale polarimeter to be deployed on the Tibetan plateau at 5,250m above sea level. AliCPT-1 is a 90/150 GHz 72 cm aperture, two-lens refracting telescope cooled down to 4 K. Alumina lenses, 800mm in diameter, image the CMB in a 33.4{\deg} field of view on a 636mm wide focal plane. The modularized focal plane consists of dichroic polarization-sensitive Transition-Edge Sensors (TESes). Each module includes 1,704 optically active TESes fabricated on a 150mm diameter silicon wafer. Each TES array is read out with a microwave multiplexing readout system capable of a multiplexing factor up to 2,048. Such a large multiplexing factor has allowed the practical deployment of tens of thousands of detectors, enabling the design of a receiver that can operate up to 19 TES arrays for a total of 32,376 TESes. AliCPT-1 leverages the technological advancements in the detector design from multiple generations of previously successful feedhorn-coupled polarimeters, and in the instrument design from BICEP-3, but applied on a larger scale. The cryostat receiver is currently under integration and testing. During the first deployment year, the focal plane will be populated with up to 4 TES arrays. Further TES arrays will be deployed in the following years, fully populating the focal plane with 19 arrays on the fourth deployment year. In a recent work, new two-dimensional materials, the monolayer MoSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$ and WSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$, have been successfully synthesized in experiment, and several other monolayer materials with the similar structure, such as MoSi$_{2}$As$_{4}$, have been predicted [{\color{blue}Science 369, 670-674 (2020)}]. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we investigate the electronic and optical properties of monolayer MoSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$, WSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$ and MoSi$_{2}$As$_{4}$. We show that these materials are semiconductors, with a pair of Dirac-type valleys located at the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. Due to the broken inversion symmetry and the effect of spin-orbit coupling, the valley fermions manifest spin-valley coupling, valley-contrasting Berry curvature, and valley-selective optical circular dichroism. We also construct the low-energy effective model for the valleys, calculate the spin Hall conductivity and the permittivity, and investigate the strain effect on the band structure. Our result reveals interesting valley physics in monolayer MoSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$, WSi$_{2}$N$_{4}$ and MoSi$_{2}$As$_{4}$, suggesting their great potential for valleytronics and spintronics applications., 10 pages,10 figures

Magnetic materials with high mobilities are intriguing subject of research from both fundamental and application perspectives. Based on first-principle calculations, we investigate the physical properties of the already synthesized AMnBi(A =K, Rb, Cs)-family materials. We show that these materials are antiferromagnetic (AFM), with Neel temperatures above 300 K. They contain AFM ordered Mn layers, while the interlayer coupling changes from ferromagnetic (FM) for KMnBi to AFM for RbMnBi and CsMnBi. We find that these materials are narrow gap semiconductors. Owing to the small effective mass, the electron carrier mobility can be very high, reaching up to 100,000 cm2/(Vs) for KMnBi. In contrast, the hole mobility is much suppressed, typically lower by two orders of magnitude. We further study their two-dimensional (2D) single layer structures, which are found be AFM with fairly high mobility (1000 cm2/(Vs)). Their Neel temperatures can still reach room temperature. Interesting, we find that the magnetic phase transition is also accompanied by a metal-insulator phase transition, with the paramagnetic metal phase possessing a pair of nonsymmorphic-symmetry-protected 2D spin-orbit Dirac points. Furthermore, the magnetism can be effectively controlled by the applied strain. When the magnetic ordering is turned into FM, the system can become a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with gapless chiral edge states.

In the vicinity of the magic angle in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), the two low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) become exceedingly narrow1-10 and many exotic correlated states, such as superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and topological phases, are observed11-16. Heterostrain, which is almost unavoidable in the TBG, can modify its single-particle band structure and lead to novel properties of the TBG that have never been considered so far. Here, we show that heterostrain in a TBG near the magic angle generates a new zero-energy flat band between the two VHSs. Doping the TBG to partially fill the zero-energy flat band, we observe a correlation-induced gap of about 10 meV that splits the flat band. By applying perpendicular magnetic fields, a large and linear response of the gap to magnetic fields is observed, attributing to the emergence of large orbital magnetic moments in the TBG when valley degeneracy of the flat band is lifted by electron-electron interactions. The orbital magnetic moment per moire supercell is measured as about 15 uB in the TBG.

Layered materials with robust magnetic ordering have been attracting significant research interest. In recent experiments, a new layered material 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ has been synthesized and exhibits ferromagnetism above the room temperature. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we investigate the electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$, both in the bulk and in the two-dimensional (2D) limit. We show that 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ can be stable in the monolayer form, and has a low exfoliation energy. The monolayer structure is an intrinsic ferromagnetic metal, which maintains a high Curie temperature above the room temperature. Particularly, we reveal interesting features in the anomalous Hall transport. We show that in the ground state, both bulk and monolayer 1$T$-CrTe$_{2}$ possess vanishing anomalous Hall effect, because the magnetization preserves one vertical mirror symmetry. The anomalous Hall conductivity can be made sizable by tuning the magnetization direction or by uniaxial strains that break the mirror symmetry. The room-temperature 2D ferromagnetism and the tunable anomalous Hall effect make the material a promising platform for nanoscale device applications., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

The interplay between interlayer van der Waals interaction and intralayer lattice distortion can lead to structural reconstruction in slightly twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with the twist angle being smaller than a characteristic angle {\theta}c. Experimentally, the {\theta}c is demonstrated to be very close to the magic angle ({\theta} ~ 1.05{\deg}). In this work, we address the transition between reconstructed and unreconstructed structures of the TBG across the magic angle by using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Our experiment demonstrates that both the two structures are stable in the TBG around the magic angle. By applying a STM tip pulse, we show that the two structures can be switched to each other and the bandwidth of the flat bands, which plays a vital role in the emergent strongly correlated states in the magic-angle TBG, can be tuned. The observed tunable lattice reconstruction and bandwidth of the flat bands provide an extra control knob to manipulate the exotic electronic states of the TBG near the magic angle., Comment: 4 figures in main text

In the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG), strong electron-electron (e-e) correlations caused by the band-flattening lead to many exotic quantum phases such as superconductivity, correlated insulator, ferromagnetism, and quantum anomalous Hall effects, when its low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) are partially filled. Here our high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope and spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the e-e correlation in a non-magic-angle TBG with a twist angle {\theta} = 1.49 still plays an important role in determining its electronic properties. Our most interesting observation on that sample is that when one of its VHS is partially filled, the one associated peak in the spectrum splits into four peaks. Our analysis based on the continuum model suggests that such a one-to-four split of the VHS originates from the formation of an interaction-driven spin-valley-polarized metallic state near the VHS, lifting both the spin and valley degeneracies. Our results for this non-magic-angle TBG reveal a new symmetry-breaking phase, which has not been identified in the MA-TBG or in other systems.

In this paper we propose a general framework to study the quantum geometry of $\sigma$-models when they are effectively localized to small quantum fluctuations around constant maps. Such effective theories have surprising exact descriptions at all loops in terms of target geometry and can be rigorously formulated. We illustrate how to turn the physics idea of exact semi-classical approximation into a geometric set-up in this framework, using Gauss-Manin connection. As an application, we carry out this program in details by the example of topological quantum mechanics, and explain how to implement the idea of exact semi-classical approximation into a proof of the algebraic index theorem. The proof resembles much of the physics derivation of Atiyah-Singer index theorem and clarifies the geometric face of many other mathematical constructions., Comment: 43 pages. Comments are welcome

The theta-dependent gauge theories can be studied by using holographic duality through string theory on certain spacetimes. Via this correspondence we consider a stack of $N_{0}$ dynamical D0-branes as D-instantons in the background sourced by $N_{c}$ coincident non-extreme black D4-branes. According to the gauge-gravity duality this D0-D4 brane system corresponds to Yang-Mills theory with a theta angle at finite temperature. We solve the IIA supergravity action by taking account into a sufficiently small backreaction of the D-instantons and obtain an analytical solution for our D0-D4-brane configuration. Then the dual theory in the large $N_{c}$ limit can be holographically investigated with the gravity solution. In the dual field theory, we find the coupling constant exhibits the property of asymptotic freedom as it is expected in QCD. The contribution of the theta-dependence to the free energy gets suppressed at high temperature which is basically consistent with the calculation by using the Yang-Mills instanton. The topological susceptibility in the large $N_{c}$ limit vanishes and this behavior remarkably agrees with the implications from the simulation results at finite temperature. Besides we finally find a geometrical interpretation of the theta-dependence in this holographic system., 18 pages, 1 table

Let X be a non-compact Calabi-Yau manifold and f be a holomorphic function on X with compact critical locus. We introduce the notion of f-twisted Sobolev spaces for the pair (X,f) and prove the corresponding Hodge-to-de Rham degeneration property via L2-Hodge theoretical methods when f satisfies an asymptotic condition of strongly ellipticity. This leads to a Frobenius manifold via the Barannikov-Kontsevich construction, unifying the Landau-Ginzburg and Calabi-Yau geometry. Our construction can be viewed as a generalization of K.Saito's higher residue and primitive form theory for isolated singularities. A number of quantum Hall isospin ferromagnetic (QHIFM) states have been predicted in the relativistic zero Landau level (LL) of graphene monolayer. These states, especially the states at LL filling factor v = 0 of charge-neutral graphene, have been extensively explored in experiment. To date, identification of these high-field broken-symmetry states has mostly relied on macroscopic transport techniques. Here, we study splitting of the zero LL of graphene at partial filling and demonstrate a direct approach by imaging the QHIFM states at atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope. At half filling of the zero LL (v = 0), the system is in a spin unpolarized state and we observe a linear magnetic-field-scaling of valley splitting. Simultaneously, the spin degeneracy in the two valleys is also lifted by the magnetic fields. When the Fermi level lies inside the spin-polarized states (at v = 1 or -1), the spin splitting is dramatically enhanced because of the strong many-body effects. A remarkable property of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with small twist angle is the presence of a well-defined and conserved low-energy valley degrees of freedom1, which can potentially bring about new types of valley-associated spontaneous-symmetry breaking phases. Electron-electron (e-e) interactions in the TBG near the magic angle 1.1 degree can lift the valley degeneracy, allowing for the realization of orbital magnetism and topological phases2-11. However, direct measurement of the orbital-based magnetism in the TBG is still lacking up to now. Here we report evidence for orbital magnetic moment generated by the moire-scale current loops in a TBG with a twist angle �� ~ 1.68 degree. The valley degeneracy of the 1.68 degree TBG is removed by e-e interactions when its low-energy van Hove singularity (VHS) is nearly half filled. A large and linear response of the valley splitting to magnetic fields is observed, attributing to coupling to the large orbital magnetic moment induced by chiral current loops circulating in the moire pattern. According to our experiment, the orbital magnetic moment is about 10.7 uB per moire supercell. Our aim was to enhance visual quality and quantitative accuracy of dynamic positron emission tomography (PET)uptake images by improved image reconstruction, using sophisticated sparse penalty models that incorporate both 2D spatial+1D temporal (3DT) information. We developed two new 3DT PET reconstruction algorithms, incorporating different temporal and spatial penalties based on discrete cosine transform (DCT)w/ patches, and tensor nuclear norm (TNN) w/ patches, and compared to frame-by-frame methods; conventional 2D ordered subsets expectation maximization (OSEM) w/ post-filtering and 2D-DCT and 2D-TNN. A 3DT brain phantom with kinetic uptake (2-tissue model), and a moving 3DT cardiac/lung phantom was simulated and reconstructed. For the cardiac/lung phantom, an additional cardiac gated 2D-OSEM set was reconstructed. The structural similarity index (SSIM) and relative root mean squared error (rRMSE) relative ground truth was investigated. The image derived left ventricular (LV) volume for the cardiac/lung images was found by region growing and parametric images of the brain phantom were calculated. For the cardiac/lung phantom, 3DT-TNN yielded optimal images, and 3DT-DCT was best for the brain phantom. The optimal LV volume from the 3DT-TNN images was on average 11 and 55 percentage points closer to the true value compared to cardiac gated 2D-OSEM and 2D-OSEM respectively. Compared to 2D-OSEM, parametric images based on 3DT-DCT images generally had smaller bias and higher SSIM. Our novel methods that incorporate both 2D spatial and 1D temporal penalties produced dynamic PET images of higher quality than conventional 2D methods, w/o need for post-filtering. Breathing and cardiac motion were simultaneously captured w/o need for respiratory or cardiac gating. Using low-temperature high-magnetic-field scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we systematically study a graphene quantum dot (GQD) defined by a circular graphene p-p junction. Inside the GQD, we observe a series of quasi-bound states arising from whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) confinement of the circular junction and directly visualize these quasi-bound states down to atomic dimensions. By applying a strong magnetic field, a large jump in energy of the quasi-bound states, which is about one-half the energy spacing between the quasi-bound states, is observed. Such a behavior results from turning on a {\pi} Berry phase of massless Dirac fermions in graphene by a magnetic field. Moreover, our experiment demonstrates that a quasi-bound state splits into two peaks with an energy separation of about 26 meV when the Fermi level crosses the quasi-bound state, indicating that there are strong electron-electron interactions in the GQD.

In this note we explore the variation of Hodge structures associated to the orbifold Landau-Ginzburg B-model whose superpotential has two variables. We extend the Getzler-Gauss-Manin connection to Hochschild chains twisted by group action. As an application, we provide explicit computations for the Getzler-Gauss-Manin connection on the universal (noncommutative) unfolding of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-orbifolding of A-type singularities. ABC-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) are predicted to exhibit novel many-body phenomena due to the existence of almost dispersionless flat-band structures near the charge neutrality point (CNP). Here, using high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy, we present Landau Level (LL) spectroscopy measurements of high-quality ABC-stacked TLG. We observe an approximately linear magnetic-field-scaling of the valley splitting and orbital splitting in the ABC-stacked TLG. Our experiment indicates that the valley splitting decreases dramatically with increasing the LL index. When the lowest LL is partially filled, we find an obvious enhancement of the orbital splitting, attributing to strong many-body effects. Moreover, we observe linear energy scaling of the inverse lifetime of quasiparticles, providing an additional evidence for the strong electron-electron interactions in the ABC-stacked TLG. These results imply that interesting broken-symmetry states and novel electron correlation effects could emerge in the ABC-stacked TLG in the presence of high magnetic fields., 4 Figures in main text

Measuring degeneracy and broken-symmetry states of a system at nanoscale requires extremely high energy and spatial resolution, which has so far eluded direct observation. Here, we realize measurement of the degeneracy and subtle broken-symmetry states of graphene at nanoscale for the first time. By using edge-free graphene quantum dots, we are able to measure valley splitting and valley-contrasting spin splitting of graphene at the single-electron level. Our experiments detect large valley splitting around atomic defects of graphene due to the coexistence of sublattice symmetry breaking and time reversal symmetry breaking. Large valley-contrasting spin splitting induced by enhanced spin-orbit coupling around the defects is also observed. We calculate the two-body strong decays of the orbitally excited scalar mesons $D_0^*(2400)$ and $D_J^*(3000)$ by using the relativistic Bethe-Salpeter (BS) method. $D_J^*(3000)$ was observed recently by the LHCb Collaboration, the quantum number of which has not been determined yet. In this paper, we assume that it is the $0^+(2P)$ state and obtain the transition amplitude by using the PCAC relation, low-energy theorem and effective Lagrangian method. For the $1P$ state, the total widths of $D_0^*(2400)^{0}$ and $ D_0^*(2400)^+$ are 226 MeV and 246 MeV, respectively. With the assumption of $0^+(2P)$ state, the widths of $D_J^*(3000)^0$ and $D_J^*(3000)^+$ are both about 131 MeV, which is close to the present experimental data. Therefore, $D_J^*(3000)$ is a strong candidate for the $2^3P_0$ state., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

As an essential part of China��������s Gravitational Waves Program, the Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT) is a ground-based experiment aiming at the Primordial Gravitational Waves (PGWs) by measuring B-mode polarization of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). First proposed in 2014 and currently in fast construction phase, AliCPT is China��������s first CMB project that plans for commissioning in 2019. Led by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the project is a worldwide collaboration of more than fifteen universities and research institutes. Ali CMB Project is briefly introduced.

Nodal-line metals and semimetals, as interesting topological states of matter, have been mostly studied in nonmagnetic materials. Here, based on first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we predict that fully spin-polarized Weyl loops can be realized in the half metal state for the three-dimensional material Li$_3$(FeO$_3$)$_2$. We show that this material has a ferromagnetic ground state, and it is a half metal with only a single spin channel present near the Fermi level. The spin-up bands form two separate Weyl loops close to the Fermi level, which arise from band inversions and are protected by the glide mirror symmetry. One loop is of type-I, whereas the other loop is of hybrid type. Corresponding to these two loops in the bulk, on the (100) surface, there exist two fully spin-polarized drumheads of surface states within the surface projections of the loops. The effects of the electron correlation and the spin-orbit coupling, as well as the possible hourglass Weyl chains in the nonmagnetic state have been discussed. The realization of fully spin-polarized Weyl-loop fermions in the bulk and drumhead fermions on the surface for a half metal may generate promising applications in spintronics., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

Negative differential conductance (NDC), characterized by the decreasing current with increasing voltage, has attracted continuous attention for its various novel applications. The NDC typically exists in a certain range of bias voltages for a selected system and controlling the regions of NDC in curves of current versus voltage (I-V) is experimentally challenging. Here, we demonstrate an unusual magnetic-field-controlled NDC in graphene npn junction resonators. The magnetic field not only can switch on and off the NDC, but also can continuously tune the regions of the NDC in the I-V curves. In the graphene npn junction resonators, magnetic fields generate sharp and pronounced Landau-level peaks with the help of the Klein tunneling of massless Dirac fermions. A tip of scanning tunneling microscope induces a relatively shift of the Landau levels in graphene beneath the tip. Tunneling between the misaligned Landau levels results in the magnetic-field-controlled NDC that may have potential applications for future graphene-based technology., 4 figures in main text

In this paper, we systematically calculate two-body strong decays of newly observed $D_J(3000)$ and $D_{sJ}(3040)$ with 2P$(1^+)$ and 2P$(1^{+\prime})$ assignments in an instantaneous approximation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation method. Our results show that both resonances can be explained as the 2P$(1^{+'})$ with broad width via $^3P_1$ and $^1P_1$ mixing in $D$ and $D_s$ families. For $D_J(3000)$, the total width is 229.6 MeV in our calculation, close to the upper limit of experimental data, and the dominant decay channels are $D_2^*\pi$, $D^*\pi$, and $D^*(2600)\pi$. For $D_{sJ}(3040)$, the total width is 157.4 MeV in our calculation, close to the lower limit of experimental data, and the dominant channels are $D^*K$ and $D^*K^*$. These results are consistent with observed channels in experiments. Given the very little information that has been obtained from experiments and the large error bars of the total decay widths, we recommend the detection of dominant channels in our calculation., Comment: 22 pages, 2 figures

The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Polarization plays an important role in current cosmological studies. CMB B-mode polarization is the most effective probe to primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) and a test of the inflation as well as other theories of the early universe such as bouncing and cyclic universe. So far, major ground-based CMB polarization experiments are located in the southern hemisphere.Recently, China has launched the Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT) in Tibetan Plateau to measure CMB B mode polarization and detect the PGWs in northern hemisphere. AliCPT include two stages, the first one is to build a telescope at the 5250m site (AliCPT-1) and the second one is to have a more sensitive telescope at a higher altitude of about 6000m (AliCPT-2). In this paper, we report the atmospherical conditions, sky coverage and the current infrastructure associated with AliCPT. We analyzed the reanalysis data from MERRA-2 together with radiosonde data from the Ali Meteorological Service and found that the amount of water vapor has a heavy seasonal variation and October to March is the suitable observation time. We also found 95/150 GHz to be feasible for AliCPT-1 and higher frequencies to be possible for AliCPT-2. Then we analyzed the observable sky and the target fields, and showed that Ali provides us a unique opportunity to observe CMB with less foreground contamination in the northern hemisphere and is complementary to the existed southern CMB experiments. Together with the developed infrastructure, we point out that Ali opens a new window for CMB observation and will be one of the major sites in the world along with Antarctic and Atacama., 9 pages, 10 figures

Nanoscale twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is quite instable and will change its structure to Bernal (or AB-stacking) bilayer with a much lower energy. Therefore, the lack of nanoscale TBG makes its electronic properties not accessible in experiment up to now. In this work, a special confined TBG is obtained in the overlaid area of two continuous misoriented graphene sheets. The width of the confined region of the TBG changes gradually from about 22 nm to 0 nm. By using scanning tunnelling microscopy, we studied carefully the structure and the electronic properties of the nanoscale TBG. Our results indicate that the low-energy electronic properties, including twist-induced van Hove singularities (VHSs) and spatial modulation of local density-of-state, are strongly affected by the translational symmetry breaking of the nanoscale TBG. Whereas, the electronic properties above the energy of the VHSs are almost not influenced by the quantum confinement even when the width of the TBG is reduced to only a single moire spot., 4 Figures

When electrons are confined in a two dimensional (2D) system, typical quantum mechanical phenomena such as Landau quantization can be detected. Graphene systems, including the single atomic layer and few-layer stacked crystals, are ideal 2D materials for studying a variety of quantum mechanical problems. In this article, we review the experimental progress in the unusual Landau quantized behaviors of Dirac fermions in monolayer and multilayer graphene by using scanning tunneling microscopy(STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy(STS). Through STS measurement of the strong magnetic fields, distinct Landau-level spectra and rich level splitting phenomena are observed in different graphene layers. These unique properties provide an effective method for identifying the number of layers, as well as the stacking orders, and investigating the fundamentally physical phenomena of graphene. Moreover, in the presence of a strain and charged defects, the Landau quantization of graphene can be significantly modified, leading to unusual spectroscopic and electronic properties.

Nonsymmorphic space group symmetries can generate exotic band-crossings in topological metals and semimetals. Here, based on symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations, we reveal rich band-crossing features in the existing layered compounds Ta$_3$SiTe$_6$ and Nb$_3$SiTe$_6$, enabled by nonsymmorphic symmetries. We show that in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), these three-dimensional (3D) bulk materials possess accidental Dirac loops and essential fourfold nodal lines. In the presence of SOC, there emerges an hourglass Dirac loop---a fourfold degenerate nodal loop, on which each point is a neck-point of an hourglass-type dispersion. We show that this interesting type of band-crossing is protected and dictated by the nonsymmorphic space group symmetries, and it gives rise to drumhead-like surface states. Furthermore, we also investigate these materials in the monolayer form. We show that these two-dimensional (2D) monolayers host nodal lines in the absence of SOC, and the nodal lines transform to essential spin-orbit Dirac points when SOC is included. A variety of new and interesting correlated states have been predicted in graphene monolayer doped to Van Hove singularities (VHSs) of its density-of-state (DOS). However, tuning the Fermi energy to reach a VHS of graphene by either gating or chemical doping is prohibitively difficult, owning to their large energy distance (3 eV). Therefore, these correlated states, which arise from effects of strong electron-electron interactions at the VHSs, have remained experimentally elusive. Here, we report experimental evidences of electron-electron interactions around the VHSs of a twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) through scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. By introducing a small twisted angle between two adjacent graphene sheets, we are able to generate low-energy VHSs arbitrarily approaching the Fermi energy. The split of the VHSs are observed and the symmetry breaking of electronic states around the VHSs are directly visualized. These results experimentally demonstrate the important effects of electron-electron interactions on electronic properties around the VHSs of the TBG, therefore providing motivation for further theoretical and experimental studies in graphene systems with considering many-body interactions., 4 Figures in main text

We explain the effective renormalization method of quantum field theory in the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism and illustrate its mathematical applications by three geometric examples: (1) Topological quantum mechanics and algebraic index, (2) Elliptic curve and higher genus mirror symmetry, (3) Calabi-Yau geometry and integrable hierarchy. With considering the great success of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies of graphene in the past few years, it is quite surprising to notice that there is still a fundamental contradiction about the reported tunnelling spectra of quasi-free-standing graphene monolayer. Many groups observed V-shape spectra with linearly vanishing density-of-state (DOS) at the Dirac point, whereas, the others reported spectra with a gap of 60 meV pinned to the Fermi level in the quasi-free-standing graphene monolayer. Here we systematically studied the two contradicted tunnelling spectra of the quasi-free-standing graphene monolayer on several different substrates and provided a consistent interpretation about the result. The gap in the spectra arises from the out-of-plane phonons in graphene, which mix the Dirac electrons at the Brillouin zone corners with the nearly free-electron states at the zone center. Our experiment indicated that interactions with substrates could effectively suppress effects of the out-of-plane phonons in graphene and enable us to detect only the DOS of the Dirac electrons in the spectra. We also show that it is possible to switch on and off the out-of-plane phonons of graphene at the nanoscale, i.e., the tunnelling spectra show switching between the two distinct features, through voltage pulses applied to the STM tip., Comment: 4 Figures

We study the effective Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization theory for chiral deformation of two dimensional conformal field theories. We establish an exact correspondence between renormalized quantum master equations for effective functionals and Maurer-Cartan equations for chiral vertex operators. The generating functions are proven to have modular property with mild holomorphic anomaly. As an application, we construct an exact solution of quantum B-model (BCOV theory) in complex one dimension that solves the higher genus mirror symmetry conjecture on elliptic curves., 49 pages. Graphene, as an atomic-thick ultrasoft membrane, almost has no resistance against out-of-plane deformations and, therefore, it is always wrinkled to a certain degree. Recently, corrugated structures and their effects on the electronic properties of monolayer graphene have been studied extensively. However, similar experimental studies in bilayer graphene have yet to be reported. Here, we show that corrugations in bilayer graphene can generate incommensurate stacking solitons (domain walls) between commensurate Bernal-stacked domains. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we microscopically study electronic structures of a corrugation-induced stacking soliton that separates two adjacent AB and BA stacked bilayer regions with a uniform interlayer potential difference. Both topological gapless edge states and quasi-localized gapped quantum-well-like states are observed in the nanoscale corrugation. Atomic resolution mapping of the topological edge states along the stacking soliton reveals the existence of intervalley scattering between them, which could explain recent experiments where the conductance along domain walls of gapped graphene bilayer is smaller than a quantized value 4e2 h., 4 figures

Twisted supergravity is supergravity in a background where the bosonic ghost field takes a non-zero value. This is the supergravity counterpart of the familiar concept of twisting supersymmetric field theories. In this paper, we give conjectural descriptions of type IIA and IIB supergravity in $10$ dimensions. Our conjectural descriptions are in terms of the closed-string field theories associated to certain topological string theories, and we conjecture that these topological string theories are twists of the physical string theories. For type IIB, the results of arXiv:1505.6703 show that our candidate twisted supergravity theory admits a unique quantization in perturbation theory. This is despite the fact that the theories, like the original physical theories, are non-renormalizable. Although we do not prove our conjectures, we amass considerable evidence. We find that our candidates for the twisted supergravity theories contain the residual supersymmetry one would expect. We also prove (using heavily a result of Baulieu arXiv:1009.3893) the open string version of our conjecture: the theory living on a brane in the topological string theory is a twist of the maximally supersymmetric gauge theory living on the brane in the physical string theory., 72 pages

The pristine graphene is strongly diamagnetic. However, graphene with single carbon atom defects could exhibit paramagnetism with local magnetic moments ~ 1.5 per vacancy1-6. Theoretically, both the electrons and electrons of graphene contribute to the magnetic moment of the defects, and the pi magnetism is characterizing of two spin-split DOS (density-of-states) peaks close to the Dirac point1,6. Since its prediction, many experiments attempt to study this pi magnetism in graphene, whereas, only a notable resonance peak has been observed around the atomic defects6-9, leaving the pi magnetism experimentally so elusive. Here, we report direct experimental evidence of the pi magnetism by using scanning tunnelling microscope. We demonstrate that the localized state of the atomic defects is split into two DOS peaks with energy separations of several tens meV and the two spin-polarized states degenerate into a profound peak at positions with distance of ~ 1 nm away from the monovacancy. Strong magnetic fields further increase the energy separations of the two spin-polarized peaks and lead to a Zeeman-like splitting. The effective g-factors geff around the atomic defect is measured to be about 40. Such a giant enhancement of the g-factor is attributed to the strong spin polarization of electron density and large electron-electron interactions near the atomic vacancy., Comment: 4 Figures in main text

Bilayer graphene contains, compared to graphene monolayer, an additional graphene sheet and, therefore, extra degrees of freedom, making it a unique system for complex electronic states to emerge. Here, we show that there are two types of domain walls, i.e., coupling domain wall and potential domain wall, in gapped graphene bilayers, which make microscopic electronic properties of the bilayers varying spatially. The coupling domain wall separates two graphene bilayer regions with different interlayer coupling strengths and the potential domain wall is a boundary separating two adjacent regions with different chemical potentials between two layers. We present a microscopically study, using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy, around the two types of domain walls. The well-defined domain walls allow us to spatially resolve the energy gap and Landau levels around them, which show novel behaviour beyond what is expected from current theoretical models. Our result indicates that the graphene bilayer may exhibit exotic electronic properties related to the microscopic symmetry of the two layers., Five figures
