We present results from a 244\,ks \textit{NuSTAR} observation of 3C\,273 obtained during a cross-calibration campaign with the \textit{Chandra}, \textit{INTEGRAL}, \textit{Suzaku}, \textit{Swift}, and \textit{XMM-Newton} observatories. We show that the spectrum, when fit with a power-law model using data from all observatories except \textit{INTEGRAL} over the 1--78\,keV band, leaves significant residuals in the \textit{NuSTAR} data between 30--78\,keV. The \nustar\ 3--78\,keV spectrum is well-described by an exponentially cutoff power-law ($\Gamma = 1.646 \pm 0.006$, E$_\mathrm{cutoff} = 202_{-34}^{+51}$\,keV) with a weak reflection component from cold, dense material. There is also evidence for a weak ($EW = 23 \pm 11$ eV) neutral iron line. We interpret these features as arising from coronal emission plus reflection off an accretion disk or distant material. Beyond 80\,keV \textit{INTEGRAL} data show clear excess flux relative to an extrapolation of the AGN model fit to \nustar. This high-energy power-law is consistent with the presence of a beamed jet, which begins to dominate over emission from the inner accretion flow at 30-40 keV. Modeling the jet locally (in the \textit{NuSTAR} + \textit{INTEGRAL} band) as a power-law, we find the coronal component is fit by $\Gamma_\mathrm{AGN} = 1.638 \pm 0.045$, $E_\mathrm{cutoff} = 47 \pm 15$\,keV, and jet photon index by $\Gamma_\mathrm{jet} = 1.05 \pm 0.4$. We also consider \textit{Fermi}/LAT observations of 3C\,273 and here the broad-band spectrum of the jet can be described by a log-parabolic model, peaking at $\sim 2$\,MeV. Finally, we investigate the spectral variability in the \textit{NuSTAR} band and find an inverse correlation between flux and $\Gamma$., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

Dual active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and offset AGNs are kpc-scale separation supermassive black holes pairs created during galaxy mergers, where both or one of the black holes are AGNs, respectively. These dual and offset AGNs are valuable probes of the link between mergers and AGNs but are challenging to identify. Here we present Chandra/ACIS observations of 12 optically-selected dual AGN candidates at z < 0.34, where we use the X-rays to identify AGNs. We also present HST/WFC3 observations of 10 of these candidates, which reveal any stellar bulges accompanying the AGNs. We discover a dual AGN system with separation of 2.2 kpc, where the two stellar bulges have coincident [O III] and X-ray sources. This system is an extremely minor merger (460:1) that may include a dwarf galaxy hosting an intermediate mass black hole. We also find six single AGNs, and five systems that are either dual or offset AGNs with separations < 10 kpc. Four of the six dual AGNs and dual/offset AGNs are in ongoing major mergers, and these AGNs are 10 times more luminous, on average, than the single AGNs in our sample. This hints that major mergers may preferentially trigger higher luminosity AGNs. Further, we find that confirmed dual AGNs have hard X-ray luminosities that are half of those of single AGNs at fixed [O III] luminosity, on average. This could be explained by high densities of gas funneled to galaxy centers during mergers, and emphasizes the need for deeper X-ray observations of dual AGN candidates., 21 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission, launched on 13 June 2012, is the first focusing high-energy X-ray telescope in orbit. NuSTAR operates in the band from 3 -- 79 keV, extending the sensitivity of focusing far beyond the ~10 keV high-energy cutoff achieved by all previous X-ray satellites. The inherently low-background associated with concentrating the X-ray light enables NuSTAR to probe the hard X-ray sky with a more than one-hundred-fold improvement in sensitivity over the collimated or coded-mask instruments that have operated in this bandpass. Using its unprecedented combination of sensitivity, spatial and spectral resolution, NuSTAR will pursue five primary scientific objectives, and will also undertake a broad program of targeted observations. The observatory consists of two co-aligned grazing-incidence X-ray telescopes pointed at celestial targets by a three-axis stabilized spacecraft. Deployed into a 600 km, near-circular, 6degree inclination orbit, the Observatory has now completed commissioning, and is performing consistent with pre-launch expectations. NuSTAR is now executing its primary science mission, and with an expected orbit lifetime of ten years, we anticipate proposing a guest investigator program, to begin in Fall 2014., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

We report the discovery of gamma-ray emission from the Circinus galaxy using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Circinus is a nearby (~4 Mpc) starburst with a heavily obscured Seyfert-type active nucleus, bipolar radio lobes perpendicular to the spiral disk, and kpc-scale jet-like structures. Our analysis of 0.1-100 GeV events collected during 4 years of LAT observations reveals a significant (~ 7.3 sigma) excess above the background. We find no indications of variability or spatial extension beyond the LAT point-spread function. A power-law model used to describe the 0.1-100 GeV gamma-ray spectrum yields a flux of (18.8+/-5.8)x10^{-9} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} and photon index 2.19+/-0.12, corresponding to an isotropic gamma-ray luminosity of 3 x 10^{40} erg s^{-1}. This observed gamma-ray luminosity exceeds the luminosity expected from cosmic-ray interactions in the interstellar medium and inverse Compton radiation from the radio lobes. We report Chandra observations of a double X-ray source in the z=0.1569 galaxy SDSS J171544.05+600835.7. The galaxy was initially identified as a dual AGN candidate based on the double-peaked [O III] emission lines, with a line-of-sight velocity separation of 350 km/s, in its Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectrum. We used the Kast Spectrograph at Lick Observatory to obtain two longslit spectra of the galaxy at two different position angles, which reveal that the two AGN emission components have not only a velocity offset, but also a projected spatial offset of 1.9 kpc/h70 on the sky. Chandra/ACIS observations of two X-ray sources with the same spatial offset and orientation as the optical emission suggest the galaxy most likely contains Compton-thick dual AGN, although the observations could also be explained by AGN jets. Deeper X-ray observations that reveal Fe K lines, if present, would distinguish between the two scenarios. The observations of a double X-ray source in SDSS J171544.05+600835.7 are a proof of concept for a new, systematic detection method that selects promising dual AGN candidates from ground-based spectroscopy that exhibits both velocity and spatial offsets in the AGN emission features., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJL

We analyze recent simultaneous Chandra/RXTE observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945. The unprecedented spatial resolution of Chandra means we are able to separate the spectra of the nucleus, starburst and superwind regions, while the RXTE data extend the spectrum to higher energies. The extreme absorbing column of $N_H\sim 4\times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ means that the nucleus is only seen directly above 8--10 keV, while the lower energy spectrum from the nuclear region in Chandra is dominated by reflection. By contrast, the superwind is dominated by emission from hot plasma, but the starburst region contains both hot plasma and reflection signatures. To form a reflected spectrum requires that the starburst region contains clumps of cool, optically thick material, perhaps star forming cores, which are irradiated by 7--10 keV photons from the nucleus. Since photons of this energy are obscured along the line sight then this confirms the result of Madejski et al. (2000) that the extreme absorbtion material is disk-like rather than a torus. However, the IR/optical limits on the lack of high excitation emission lines show that by contrast the lower energy photons from the nucleus are obscured in all directions. We discuss the complex absorption structure revealed by these observations, and propose an an overall source geometry in which the nucleus is completely embedded in material with $N_H\sim 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, Comment: Accepted in ApJ

The uninterrupted 7-day ASCA observations of the TeV blazar Mrk421 in 1998 have clearly revealed that X-ray flares occur repeatedly. In this paper, we present the results of the time-resolved spectral analysis of the combined data taken by ASCA, RXTE, BeppoSAX, and EUVE. In this object - and in many other TeV blazars - the precise measurement of the shape of the X-ray spectrum, which reflects the high energy portion of the synchrotron component, is crucial in determining the high energy cutoff of the accelerated electrons in the jet. Thanks to the simultaneous broadband coverage, we measured the 0.1-25 keV spectrum resolved on time scales as short as several hours, providing a great opportunity to investigate the detailed spectral evolution at the flares. By analyzing the time subdivided observations, we parameterize the evolution of the synchrotron peak, where the radiation power dominates, by fitting the combined spectra with a quadratic form (where the vFv flux at the energy E obeys log vFv(E)=log(vFv_peak) - const x (log E - log Epeak)^2). In this case, we show that there is an overall trend that the peak energy Ep and peak flux vFvp both increase or decrease together. The relation of the two parameters is best described as Ep \propto vFvp^{0.7} for the 1998 campaign. Similar results were derived for the 1997 observation, while the relation gave a smaller index when included both 1997 and 1998 data. On the other hand, we show that this relation, and also the detailed spectral variations, differ from flare to flare within the 1998 campaign. We suggest that the observed features are consistent with the idea that flares are due to a appearance of a new spectral component. With the availability of the simultaneous TeV data, we also show that there exists a clear correlation between the synchrotron peak flux and the TeV flux., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, to appear in ApJ

We report the variable X-ray emission from BL Lacertae detected in the ASCA ToO observation conducted during the EGRET and RXTE pointings, coincident with the 1997 July outburst. The source showed a historically high state of X-ray, optical, and gamma-ray emission, with its 2-10 keV flux peaking at ~3.3 E-11 erg/cm2/s. This is more than 3 times higher than the value measured by ASCA in 1995. We detected two rapid flares which occured only in the soft X-ray band, while the hard X-ray flux also increased, but decayed with a much longer time scale. Together with the requirement of a very steep and varying power law dominating the soft X-ray band in addition to the hard power law, we suggest that both the high energy end of the synchrotron spectrum and the hard inverse Compton spectrum were visible in this source during the outburst. We discuss the possible origins of the observed variability time scales, and interpret the short time scales of the soft X-ray variability as reflecting the size of the emission region., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

This paper summarizes the observations which provide the best evidence for the presence of black holes in active galactic nuclei. This includes: X-ray variability; kinematical studies using optical emission lines as well as the distribution of megamaser spots; and the shape of the Fe K$\alpha$ X-ray emission line. The recent long look X-ray observations of TeV blazars have revealed many important new features concerning their time variability. In this paper, we suggest a physical interpretation for those features based on the framework of the internal and external shock scenarios. We present a simplified model applicable to TeV blazars, and investigate through simulations how each of the model parameters would affect to the observed light curve or spectrum. In particular, we show that the internal shock scenario naturally leads to all the observed variability properties including the structure function, but for it to be applicable, the fractional fluctuation of the initial bulk Lorentz factors must be small, with sigma_gamma / gamma_average < 0.01. This implies very low dynamical efficiency of the internal shock scenario. We also suggest that several observational quantities -- such as the characteristic time scale, the relative amplitude of flares as compared to the steady (``offset'') component, and the slope of the structure function -- can be used to probe the inner jet. The results are applied to the TeV blazar Mrk421, and this, within the context of the model, leads to the determination of several physical parameters: the ejection of a shell with average thickness of ~1E13 cm occurs on average every 10 minutes, and the shells collide ~1E17 cm away from the central source., 12 pages, 13 figures, to appear in ApJ

We present a broadband (~0.5-79 keV) spectral and temporal analysis of multiple NuSTAR observations combined with archival Suzaku and Chandra data of NGC4945, the brightest extragalactic source at 100 keV. We observe hard X-ray (> 10 keV) flux and spectral variability, with flux variations of a factor 2 on timescales of 20 ksec. A variable primary continuum dominates the high energy spectrum (>10 keV) in all the states, while the reflected/scattered flux which dominates at E< 10 keV stays approximately constant. From modelling the complex reflection/transmission spectrum we derive a Compton depth along the line of sight of tau_Thomson ~ 2.9, and a global covering factor for the circumnuclear gas of ~ 0.15. This agrees with the constraints derived from the high energy variability, which implies that most of the high energy flux is transmitted, rather that Compton-scattered. This demonstrates the effectiveness of spectral analysis in constraining the geometric properties of the circumnuclear gas, and validates similar methods used for analyzing the spectra of other bright, Compton-thick AGN. The lower limits on the e-folding energy are between 200-300 keV, consistent with previous BeppoSAX, Suzaku and Swift BAT observations. The accretion rate, estimated from the X-ray luminosity and assuming a bolometric correction typical of type 2 AGN, is in the range ~0.1-0.3 lambda_Edd depending on the flux state. The substantial observed X-ray luminosity variability of NGC4945 implies that large errors can arise from using single-epoch X-ray data to derive L/L_Edd values for obscured AGNs., Accepted for publication in ApJ
