Asteroseismic modelling will be part of the pipeline of the PLATO mission and will play a key role in the mission precision requirements on stellar mass, radius and age. It is therefore crucial to compare how current modelling strategies perform, and discuss the limitations and remaining challenges for PLATO, such as the so-called surface effects, the choice of physical ingredients, and stellar activity. In this context, we carried out a systematic study of the impact of surface effects on the estimation of stellar parameters. In this work, we demonstrated how combining a mean density inversion with a fit of frequencies separation ratios can efficiently damp the surface effects and achieve precise and accurate stellar parameters for ten Kepler LEGACY targets, well within the PLATO mission requirements. We applied and compared two modelling approaches, directly fitting the individual frequencies, or coupling a mean density inversion with a fit of the ratios, to six synthetic targets with a patched 3D atmosphere from Sonoi et al. (2015) and ten actual targets from the LEGACY sample. The fit of the individual frequencies is unsurprisingly very sensitive to surface effects and the stellar parameters tend to be biased, which constitutes a fundamental limit to both accuracy and precision. In contrast, coupling a mean density inversion and a fit of the ratios efficiently damps the surface effects, and allows us to get both precise and accurate stellar parameters. The average statistical precision of our selection of LEGACY targets with this second strategy is 1.9% for the mass, 0.7% for the radius, and 4.1% for the age, well within the PLATO requirements. Using the mean density in the constraints significantly improves the precision of the mass, radius and age determinations, on average by 20%, 33%, and 16%, respectively., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Betelgeuse is a well known bright red supergiant that shows semi-regular variations with four approximate periods of 2200, 420, 230, and 185 days. While the longest period was customarily regarded as LSP (long secondary period) of unknown origin, we identify the ~2200-d period as the radial fundamental mode, and the three shorter periods as the radial first, second, and third overtones. From a nonadiabatic pulsation analysis including the pulsation/convection coupling, we have found that these radial pulsation modes are all excited in the envelope of a model in a late stage of the core-carbon burning. Models with similar pulsation property have masses around 11M_\odot (19M_\odot at ZAMS) with luminosities (log L/L_\odot =5.27~5.28) and effective temperatures (log T_{eff}\approx 3.53) that are consistent with the range of the observational determinations. We also find that a synthetic light curve obtained by adding the fundamental and the first-overtone mode qualitatively agrees with the light curve of Betelgeuse up to the Great Dimming. Efforts to understand the origin and growth of massive black holes observed in the early Universe have spurred a strong interest in the evolution and fate of rapidly-accreting primordial (metal-free) stars. Here, we investigate the evolution of such Population III stars under variable accretion rates, focusing on the thermal response and stellar structure, the impact of the luminosity wave encountered early in the pre-main sequence phase, and the influence of accretion on their subsequent evolution. We employ the Geneva stellar evolution code and simulate ten models with varying accretion histories, covering a final mass range from 491 M$_{\odot}$ to 6127 M$_{\odot}$. Our findings indicate that the critical accretion rate delineating the red and blue supergiant regimes during the pre-main sequence evolution is approximately $2.5\times10^{-2} $M$_{\odot}$/yr. Once core hydrogen burning commences, the value of this critical accretion rate drops to $7.0\times10^{-3}$M$_{\odot}$/yr. Moreover, we also confirm that the Kelvin-Helmholtz timescale in the outer surface layers is the more relevant timescale for determining the transition between red and blue phases. Regarding the luminosity wave, we find that it affects only the early pre-main sequence phase of evolution and does not directly influence the transition between red and blue phases, which primarily depends on the accretion rate. Finally, we demonstrate that variable accretion rates significantly impact the lifetimes, surface enrichment, final mass and time spent in the red phase. Stars strongly impact their environment, and shape structures on all scales throughout the universe, in a process known as ``feedback''. Due to the complexity of both stellar evolution and the physics of larger astrophysical structures, there remain many unanswered questions about how feedback operates, and what we can learn about stars by studying their imprint on the wider universe. A vital condition for life on Earth is the steady supply of radiative heat by the Sun. Like all other stars, the Sun generates its emitted energy in its central regions where densities and temperatures are high enough for nuclear fusion processes to take place. Because stellar cores are usually covered by an opaque envelope, most of our knowledge about them and their life-giving nuclear processes comes from theoretical modelling or from indirect observations such as the detection of solar neutrinos and the study of stellar pulsations, respectively. Only in very rare cases, stars may expose their cores, e.g., when a tiny fraction of them evolves into Wolf-Rayet or helium hot subdwarf stars. However, for the vast majority of stars, namely unevolved stars that burn hydrogen to helium in their centres, direct observational clues on the cores are still missing. Based on a comprehensive spectroscopic and asteroseismic analysis, we show here that the bright B-type star $γ$ Columbae is the stripped pulsating core (with a mass of $4$-$5\,M_\odot$, where $M_\odot$ is the mass of the Sun) of a previously much more massive star of roughly $12\,M_\odot$ that just finished central hydrogen fusion. The star's inferred parameters indicate that it is still in a short-lived post-stripping structural readjustment phase, making it an extremely rare object. The discovery of this unique star paves the way to obtain invaluable insights into the physics of both single and binary stars with respect to nuclear astrophysics and common-envelope evolution. The $��$ Cephei pulsators are massive main-sequence stars, presenting low radial-order modes. These modes probe in particular the chemical gradient at the edge of the convective core. They hence give constraints on macroscopic processes, such as hydrodynamic or magnetic instabilities. Yet, it is not clear to what extent the seismic inferences depend on the physics employed for the stellar modelling or on the observational dataset. We investigate the observational constraints which are necessary to provide accurate constraints on the mixing processes in $��$ Cephei stars. We explore the importance of the identification of the angular degree of modes. Depending on the quality of the seismic dataset and the classical constraints, we estimate the precision achievable with asteroseismology. We propose a method extending the forward approach classically used to model $��$ Cephei stars The probability distributions of the asteroseismic-derived stellar parameters are obtained. With these distributions, we provide a systemic way to estimate the errors of the modelling. A particular effort is made to also include the theoretical uncertainties of the models. We then estimate the accuracy and precision of asteroseismology for $��$ Cephei stars in a series of hare and hound exercises. The exercises show that a set of four to five oscillation frequencies with an identified angular degree already leads to accurate inferences on the stellar parameters. Without the identification of the modes, the addition of other classical observational constraints allow to succeed the seismic modelling. When the micro-physics of the star and stellar models used for the modelling differ, the constraints derived on the internal structure remain valid if expressed in terms of acoustic variables. A large fraction of massive stars evolve in interacting binary systems, which dramatically modifies the outcome of stellar evolution. We investigated the properties of blue supergiants in binary systems and whether they are suitable for extragalactic distance determinations using the flux-weighted gravity luminosity relationship (FGLR). This is a relationship between the absolute bolometric magnitude $M_{\rm bol}$ and the spectroscopically determined flux-weighted gravity $g_{\rm F} = g/T^4_{\rm eff}$. We computed a grid of binary stellar evolution models with MESA and use the v2.1 BPASS models to examine whether they are compatible with the relatively small scatter shown by the observed relationship. Our models have initial primary masses of 9 - 30 $M_\odot$, initial orbital periods of 10 - 2511 days, mass ratio $q$ = 0.9, and metallicity $Z$ = 0.02. We find that the majority of primary stars that produce blue supergiant stages are consistent with the observed FGLR, with a small offset towards brighter bolometric magnitudes. In between 1\% - 24\% of cases, binary evolution may produce blue supergiants after a mass transfer episode, that lie below the observed FGLR. A small number of such stars have been found in extragalactic FGLR studies, suggesting that they may have evolved through binary interaction. Some models with shorter periods could resemble blue hypergiants and LBVs. We used CMFGEN radiative transfer models to investigate the effects of unresolved secondaries on diagnostics for $T_{\rm eff}$ and $g$, and the biases on the determination of interstellar reddening and $M_{\rm bol}$. We find that the effects are small and within the observed scatter, but could lead to a small overestimate of the luminosity, of $T_{\rm eff}$ and of $g$ for extreme cases. We explore the initial conditions that lead to detached binary evolution of massive pre-MS binaries and ask how large a fraction of the observed binary systems may have been initially formed as low-mass protobinaries and later undergone a significant accretion phase while remaining detached. We develop a family of analytic models to describe the orbital separation, $a$, and mass ratio, $q$, evolution. For a given mass accretion rate onto the binary system, we define a recipe for distributing this mass between the two components. For this we introduce a parameter $\eta$, such that $\frac{\dot{M}_2}{\dot{M}_1}=q^\eta$ at any time, to determine the binary mass ratio evolution. Depending on the choice of $\eta$, any type of mass ratio evolution is possible. Furthermore, we use MESA, a detailed stellar structure code, to calculate an extensive grid of binary sequences where a protobinary undergoes accretion, and we identify the initial conditions that separates detached from non-detached pre-MS binary evolution. A value of $\eta$ around 2 allows accretion growth in detached systems to form close massive binaries on the Zero Age Main-Sequence with minimum orbital periods down to about 1.2 days for $M_{\rm 1, ZAMS}=20-30M_{\odot}$ twin-binaries. $\eta=2$ can also reproduce the observed population of binary systems with primary stars above $6M_{\odot}$. The whole observed range of massive close binaries can form via accretion growth in detached systems, making the binary formation channel of accretion growth a strong contender to explain the formation of massive close binaries, including progenitors of coalescing binary black holes., Comment: 27 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables, submitted to A&A. The present paper discusses the main physical effects produced by stellar rotation on presupernovae, as well as observations which confirm these effects and their consequences for presupernova models. Rotation critically influences the mass of the exploding cores, the mass and chemical composition of the envelopes and the types of supernovae, as well as the properties of the remnants and the chemical yields. In the formation of gamma-ray bursts, rotation and the properties of rotating stars appear as the key factor. In binaries, the interaction between axial rotation and tidal effects often leads to interesting and unexpected results. Rotation plays a key role in shaping the evolution and nucleosynthesis in massive stars with very low metallicities (metallicity below about the Small Magellanic Cloud metallicity down to Population III stars). At solar and higher metallicities, the effects of rotation compete with those of stellar winds. In close binaries, the synchronisation process can lock the star at a high rotation rate despite strong mass loss and thus both effects, rotation and stellar winds, have a strong impact. In conclusion, rotation is a key physical ingredient of the stellar models and of presupernova stages, and the evolution both of single stars and close binaries. Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars, as they are advanced stages of the life of massive stars, provide a good test for various physical processes involved in the modelling of massive stars, such as rotation and mass loss. In this paper, we show the outputs of the latest grids of single massive stars computed with the Geneva stellar evolution code, and compare them with some observations. The material used to form the CEMP-no stars presents signatures of material processed by the CNO cycle and by He-burning from a previous stellar generation called the source stars. In order to reproduce the relative abundance ratios like for instance C/N or $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C, some mixing between the two burning regions must have occured in the source stars and only the outer layers of the stars, with modest amount coming from the CO core, must have been expelled either through stellar winds or at the time of the (faint) supernova event. If a massive star has lost significant mass during its red-supergiant stage, it would return to blue region in the HR diagram and spend a part of the core-He burning stage as a blue supergiant having a luminosity to mass ratio (L/M) considerably larger than about 10^4 (in solar units); the duration depends on the degree of internal mixing and on the metallicity. Then, various stellar pulsations are excited by enhanced \kappa-mechanism and strange mode instability. Assuming these pulsations to be responsible for (at least some of) the quasi-periodic light and radial-velocity variations in \alpha Cygni variables including luminous blue variables (LBVs; or S Dor variables), we can predict masses and surface compositions for these variables, and compare them with observed ones to constrain the evolutionary models. We discuss radial pulsations excited in evolutionary models of an initial mass of 40 M_\odot with solar metallicity of Z=0.014, and compare them to micro-variations in the two Galactic LBVs, HR Car and HD 160529. The rotation of stars has many interesting and important consequences for the photometric and chemical evolution of galaxies. Many of the predictions of models of stellar rotation are now compared with observations of surface abundances and velocities, with interferometric studies of fast rotating stars, with internal rotation profiles as they can be deduced by asteroseismology, to cite just a few observational constraints. In this paper, we investigate how the outputs of models depend on the prescriptions used for the diffusion coefficients included in the shellular rotating models. After recalling the various prescriptions found in the literature, we discuss their impacts on the evolutionary tracks and lifetimes of the Main-Sequence (MS) phase, the changes of the surface composition and velocities during the MS phase, the distribution of the core helium lifetime in the blue and the red part of the HR diagram, the extensions of the blue loops, the evolution of the angular momentum of the core, and the synthesis of primary nitrogen in fast-rotating metal-poor massive stars. While some of these outputs depend only slightly on the prescriptions used (for instance, the evolution of the surface velocities), most of them show a significant dependence. A massive star can enter the blue supergiant region either evolving directly from the main-sequence, or evolving from a previous red supergiant stage. The fractions of the blue supergiants having different histories depend on the internal mixing and mass-loss during the red supergiant stage. We study the possibility to use diagnostics based on stellar pulsation to discriminate blue supergiants having different evolution histories. For this purpose we have studied the pulsation property of massive star models calculated with the Geneva stellar evolution code for initial masses ranging from 8 to 50 M$_\odot$ with a solar metallicity of $Z=0.014$. We have found that radial pulsations are excited in the blue-supergiant region only in the models that had been red-supergiants before. This would provide us with a useful mean to diagnose the history of evolution of each blue-supergiant. At a given effective temperature, much more nonradial pulsations are excited in the model after the red-supergiant stage than in the model evolving towards the red-supergiant. The properties of radial and nonradial pulsations in blue supergiants are discussed. Predicted periods are compared with period ranges observed in some ��-Cygni variables in the Galaxy and NGC 300. We have found that blue supergiant models after the red-supergiant stage roughly agree with observed period ranges in most cases. However, we are left with the puzzle that the predicted surface N/C and N/O ratios seem to be too high compared with those of Deneb and Rigel., 13 pages, 8 figures; to be published in MNRAS

B-type stars are known to rotate at various velocities, including very fast rotators near the critical velocity as the Be stars. In this paper, we provide stellar models covering the mass range between 1.7 to 15 Msun, which includes the typical mass of known Be stars, at Z = 0.014, 0.006, and 0.002 and for an extended range of initial velocities on the zero-age main sequence. We used the Geneva stellar-evolution code, including the effects of shellular rotation, with a numerical treatment that has been improved so the code can precisely track the variation in the angular momentum content of the star as it changes under the influence of radiative winds and/or mechanical mass loss. We discuss the impact of the initial rotation rate on the tracks in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, the main-sequence (MS) lifetimes, the evolution of the surface rotation and abundances, as well as on the ejected masses of various isotopes. Among the new results obtained from the present grid we find that 1) fast-rotating stars with initial masses around 1.7 Msun present at the beginning of the core hydrogen-burning phase quite small convective cores with respect to their slowly rotating counterparts. This fact may be interesting to keep in mind in the framework of the asteroseismic studies of such stars. 2) The contrast between the core and surface angular velocity is higher in slower rotating stars. The values presently obtained are in agreement with the very few values obtained for B-type stars from asteroseismology. 3) At Z = 0.002, the stars in the mass range of 1.7 to 3 Msun with a mean velocity on the MS of the order of 150 km/s show N/H enhancement superior to 0.2 dex at mid-MS, and superior to 0.4 dex at the end of the MS phase. (shortened) We provide a grid of single star models covering a mass range from 0.8 to 120 Msun with an initial metallicity Z = 0.002 with and without rotation. We discuss the impact of a change in the metallicity by comparing the current tracks with models computed with exactly the same physical ingredients but with a metallicity Z = 0.014 (solar). We show that the width of the main-sequence (MS) band in the upper part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD), for luminosity above log(L/Lsun) > 5.5, is very sensitive to rotational mixing. Strong mixing significantly reduces the MS width. We confirm, but here for the first time on the whole mass range, that surface enrichments are stronger at low metallicity provided that comparisons are made for equivalent initial mass, rotation and evolutionary stage. We show that the enhancement factor due to a lowering of the metallicity (all other factors kept constant) increases when the initial mass decreases. Present models predict an upper luminosity for the red supergiants (RSG) of log (L/Lsun) around 5.5 at Z = 0.002 in agreement with the observed upper limit of RSG in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We show that models using shear diffusion coefficient calibrated to reproduce the surface enrichments observed for MS B-type stars at Z = 0.014 can also reproduce the stronger enrichments observed at low metallicity. In the framework of the present models, we discuss the factors governing the timescale of the first crossing of the Hertzsprung gap after the MS phase. We show that any process favouring a deep localisation of the H-burning shell (steep gradient at the border of the H-burning convective core, low CNO content) and/or the low opacity of the H-rich envelope favour a blue position in the HRD for the whole or at least a significant fraction of the core He-burning phase., 17 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. Recent stellar evolution computations show that the blue supergiant (BSG) stars could come from two distinct populations: a first group arising from massive stars that just left the main sequence (MS) and are crossing the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD) towards the red supergiant (RSG) branch, and a second group coming from stars that have lost considerable amount of mass during the RSG stage and are crossing the HRD for a second time towards the blue region. Due to very different luminosity-to- mass ratio, only stars from the second group are expected to have excited pulsations observable at the surface. In a previous work, we have shown that our models were able to reproduce the pulsational properties of BSGs. However, these models failed to reproduce the surface chemical composition of stars evolving back from a RSG phase. In this paper, we show how the use of the Ledoux criterion instead of the Schwarzschild one for convection allows to significantly improve the agreement with the observed chemical composition, while keeping the agreement with the pulsation periods. We examine some properties of stars evolving close to the classical Eddington limit for electron-scattering opacity, when these stars maintain a chemically homogeneous structure as a result of mixing and/or mass loss. We consider analytical relations and models computed with the Geneva code. Homologous, chemically homogeneous stars evolving with a constant Eddington factor obey a relation of the form mu^2 M = const. This applies, for example, to Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars in stages without hydrogen. The value of the constant may depend on the metallicity, initial mass, evolutionary stage, and physical processes included in the considered homologous evolutionary sequence. This article first reviews the basic physics of rotating stars and their evolution. We examine in particular the changes of the mechanical and thermal equilibrium of rotating stars. An important (predicted and observed) effect is that rotating stars are hotter at the poles and cooler at the equator. We briefly discuss the mass loss by stellar winds, which are influenced by the anisotropic temperature distribution. These anisotropies in the interior are also driving circulation currents, which transports the chemical elements and the angular momentum in stars. Internal differential rotation, if present, creates instabilities and mixing, in particular the shear mixing, the horizontal turbulence and their interactions. A major check of the model predictions concerns the changes of the surface abundances, which are modified by mass loss in the very massive stars and by rotational mixing in O- and B-type stars. We show that the observations confirm the existence of rotational mixing, with much larger effects at lower metallicities. We discuss the predictions of stellar models concerning the evolution of the surface velocities, the evolutionary tracks in the HR diagram and lifetimes, the populations of blue, red supergiants and Wolf-Rayet stars, and the progenitors of type Ibc supernovae. We show, that in many aspects, rotating models provide a much better fit than non-rotating ones. Using the same physical ingredients as those which fit the best the observations of stars at near solar metallicities, we explore the consequences of rotating models for the status of Be stars, the progenitors of Gamma Ray Bursts, the evolution of Pop III stars and of very metal poor stars, the early chemical evolution of galaxies, the origin of the C-enhanced Metal Poor stars (CEMP) and of the chemical anomalies in globular clusters., 55 pages, 33 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Review of Modern Physics

Massive stars are "cosmic engines" (cf the title of the IAU Symposium 250). They drive the photometric and chemical evolution of galaxies, inject energy and momentum through stellar winds and supernova explosions, they modify in this way the physical state of the interstellar gas and have an impact on star formation. The evolution of massive stars depends sensitively on the metallicity which has an impact on the intensity of the line driven stellar winds and on rotational mixing. We can distinguish four metallicity regimes: 1.- the Pop III regime $0 \le Z < \sim 10^{-10}$; 2.- The low metallicity regime $10^{-10} \le Z < 0.001$; 3.- The near solar metallicity regime $0.001 \le Z < 0.020$; 4.- The high metallicity regime $0.020 \le Z$. In each of these metallicity ranges, some specific physical processes occur. In this review we shall discuss these physical processes and their consequences for nucleosynthesis and the massive star populations in galaxies. We study the impact of the capture and annihilation of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) on the evolution of Pop III stars. With a suitable modification of the Geneva stellar evolution code, we study the evolution of 20 and 200 M$_\odot$ stars in Dark Matter Haloes with densities between 10$^{8}$ and $10^{11}$ GeV/cm$^3$ during the core H-burning phase, and, for selected cases, until the end of the core He-burning phase. We find that for WIMP densities higher than 5.3 $10^{10}(\sigma^{SD}_p/10^{-38} {cm}^2)^{-1}$ GeV cm$^{-3}$ the core H-burning lifetime of $20 M_{\odot}$ and $200 M_{\odot}$ stars exceeds the age of the Universe, and stars are sustained only by WIMP annihilations. We determine the observational properties of these `frozen` objects and show that they can be searched for in the local Universe thanks to their anomalous mass-radius relation, which should allow unambiguous discrimination from normal stars., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Globular clusters as $\omega$ Cen and NGC 2808 appear to have a population of very He-rich stars. From a theoretical point of view, one expects the presence of He-rich stars in all globular clusters showing an oxygen-sodium (O-Na) anticorrelation. In this paper, we briefly recall how fast rotating massive stars could be the main source of the material from which He-rich stars have formed. We speculate that the UV-upturn phenomenon observed in all elliptical galaxies might be due to He-rich stars. After a review of the many effects of metallicity on the evolution of rotating and non-rotating stars, we discuss the consequences of a high metallicity on massive star populations and on stellar nucleosynthesis. The most striking effect of high metallicity is to enhance the amount of mass lost by stellar winds. Typically at a metallicity $Z=0.001$ only 9% of the total mass returned by non-rotating massive stars is ejected by winds (91% by supernovae explosion), while at solar metallicity this fraction may amount to more than 40%. High metallicity favors the formation of Wolf-Rayet stars and of type Ib supernovae. It however disfavors the occurrence of type Ic supernovae. We estimate empirical yields of carbon based on the observed population of WC stars in the solar neighborhood, and obtain that WC stars eject between 0.2 and 0.4% of the mass initially locked into stars under the form of new synthesized carbon. Models give values well in agreement with these empirical yields. Big Bang nucleosynthesis produces only light elements and the very first generation stars are thus formed from metal-free clouds. They start the production of heavy elements during their life, and enrich the interstellar medium through their explosive death. Stellar evolution models show that the treatment of rotation has important effects on the evolution of those metal-free stars: for example, rotating models produce up to five orders of magnitude more primary nitrogen than non rotating models, due to internal mixing. This will have an impact in the composition of the second generation stars, some of which may now be observed in the Galactic halo. In the case Population III stars were very massive and would end up as direct black holes, rotation again have an interesting effect of enhancing mass loss through centrifugal force and surface enrichment. The blue Main Sequence (bMS) of $��$ Cen implies a ratio of helium to metal enrichment $��Y/��Z \approx 70$, which is a major enigma. We show that rotating models of low metallicity stars, which account for the anomalous abundance ratios of extremely metal poor stars, are also useful for understanding the very high $��Y/��Z$ ratio in $��$ Cen. Models of massive stars with moderate initial rotation velocities produce stellar winds with large He-- and N--excesses, but without the large C-- (and O--) excesses made by very fast rotation, in agreement with the observed chemical abundance ratios in $��$ Cen. It is still uncertain whether the abundance peculiarities of $��$ Cen result from the fact that the high velocity contributions of supernovae escaped the globular cluster, usually considered as a tidally stripped core of a dwarf galaxy. Another possibility is a general dominance of wind ejecta at very low $Z$, due to the formation of black holes. Some abundance and isotopic ratios like $Mg/Al$, $Na/Mg$, $Ne/N$, $^{12}C/^{13}C$, $^{16}O/^{18}O$ and $^{17}O/^{18}O$ may allow us to further discriminate between these scenarios and between the AGB and massive star contributions., 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The main instabilities induced by rotation in stellar interiors are described. We derive from first principles the general equation describing the transport of the angular momentum. The case of the transport of the chemical species is also discussed. As long as the mass loss rates are not too important, meridional currents, by advecting angular momentum from the inner regions to the outer layers, accelerate the stellar surface during the Main Sequence phase. A 9 M$_\odot$ stellar model at solar metallicity with an equatorial velocity at the beginning of the core H--burning phase equal to 340 km s$^{-1}$ reaches the break--up limit during the MS phase. The model with an initial velocity of 290 km s$^{-1}$ approaches this limit without reaching it. Stellar rotation produces an internal mixing of the elements due to shear instability and meridional circulation. This leads to observable $N/C$ enhancements in massive stars above about 7--9 $M_{\odot}$. Rotation also favours mass loss by stellar winds. Mass loss effects dominate for masses above 30 $M_{\odot}$, while mixing dominates below that limit. The effects of mixing are also much larger at lower metallicity $Z$, because the internal $\Omega$--gradients are steeper. This appears to be in agreement with observations in the SMC. At very low $Z$ and Z=0, mixing between the He--burning core and the H--burning shell leads to the production of primary N in intermediate mass stars. Such enrichments increase the metallicity of the rotating star, also massive Z=0 stars with moderate initial velocities currently reach break--up velocity during a fraction of the MS phase. We show that rotation strongly affects the nature of the supernova progenitor (blue/red supergiant or Wolf--Rayet star), and thus the supernova types. In particular our models well reproduce the variations of the number ratio SNIb/Ic to SNII with metallicity. Rotation also produces envelope enrichments of the N/C ratio, and increases the size of the CO cores. We show the evolution of the specific angular momentum up to the preSN stage and make comparison with neutron stars. We discuss the physics of the $\Omega \Gamma$-- Limit, i.e. when the star is unbound as a result of {\emph{both}} rotation and radiation pressure. We suggest that the $\Omega \Gamma$-- Limit is what makes the Humphreys--Davidson Limit. We study the impacts on the yields of a change of initial mass, metallicity and initial rotation velocity. We also consider the effects of a change of mass loss rates during the Wolf-Rayet phase. We show that for surface rotation velocities during the core H-burning phase matching to the observed ones, the quantity of 26Al ejected by a star of a given initial mass and metallicity is roughly doubled when the effects of rotation are taken into account. The metallicity dependence of the yield is, on the other hand, very similar to that obtained from non-rotating models. We estimate that at least about 20% to 50% (e.g. ∼0.6-1.4 M_O) of the live 26Al detected in the Milky-Way originates from Wolf-Rayet stellar winds. We show the importance of a good knowledge of the present metallicity gradient and star formation rate in our galaxy for modeling both the variation of the 26Al surface density with the galactocentric distance and the global contribution of the Wolf-Rayet stellar winds to the present galactic mass of 26Al., A. Rotation deeply affects the evolution of very metal poor massive stars. Indeed, even moderately rotating stars reach the break--up limit during the Main--Sequence (MS) phase, they evolve rapidly to the red after the core H--burning phase and important surface enrichment in CNO elements occurs at the supergiant stage. High rotation and the self enrichment in heavy elements $Z$ tend to enhance the quantity of mass lost by stellar winds. As a numerical example, we obtain that a 60 M$_\odot$ at $Z=0.00001$, with an initial rotation corresponding to 0.7 of the critical velocity, loses half of its initial mass during its lifetime. For $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O, rotating models predict in general enhanced yields. At high metallicity, the carbon and oxygen yields from the very high mass stars, which go through a WR phase, are little affected by rotation. For $^{14}$N, rotation allows the production of important amounts of primary nitrogen in {\it intermediate mass stars} at very low metallicity. The process invoked for this production is different, from the classically accepted scenario {\it i.e.} the Hot Bottom Burning (HBB) in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. The Geneva evolutionary code has been modified to study the advanced stages (Ne, O, Si burnings) of rotating massive stars. Here we present the results of four 20 solar mass stars at solar metallicity with initial rotational velocities of 0, 100, 200 and 300 km/s in order to show the crucial role of rotation in stellar evolution. As already known, rotation increases mass loss and core masses (Meynet and Maeder 2000). A fast rotating 20 solar mass star has the same central evolution as a non-rotating 26 solar mass star. Rotation also increases strongly net total metal yields. Furthermore, rotation changes the SN type so that more SNIb are predicted (see Meynet and Maeder 2003 and N. Prantzos and S. Boissier 2003). Several properties of massive stars with large effects of rotation and radiation are studied. We show that there are 2 roots for the equation giving the rotational velocities at break-up: 1) The usual solution, which is shown to apply when the Eddington ratio $\Gamma$ of the star is smaller than formally 0.639. 2) Above this value of $\Gamma$, there is a second root, inferior to the first one, for the break-up velocity. This second solution tends to zero, when $\Gamma$ tends towards 1. This second root results from the interplay of radiation and rotation, and in particular from the reduction by rotation of the effective mass in the local Eddington factor. The analysis made here should hopefully clarify a recent debate between Langer (\cite{La97,La98}) and Glatzel (\cite{Gla98}). The expression for the global mass loss-rates is a function of both $\Omega$ and $\Gamma$, and this may give raise to extreme mass loss-rates ($\Omega \Gamma $-limit). In particular, for O-type stars, LBV stars, supergiants and Wolf-Rayet stars, even slow rotation may dramatically enhance the mass loss rates. We describe the main-sequence evolution of a rotating 9 $M_\odot$ star. Its interior rotation profile is determined by the redistribution of angular momentum through the meridian circulation and through the shear turbulence generated by the differential rotation; the possible effect of internal waves is neglected. We examine the mixing of chemicals produced by the same internal motions. Our modelization is based on the set of equations established by Zahn (1992) and completed in Matias, Talon & Zahn (1996). Our calculations show that the amount of mixing associated with a typical rotation velocity of $\sim 100 km/s$ yields stellar models whose global parameters are very similar to those obtained with the moderate overshooting ($d/H_P \simeq 0.2$) which has been invoked until now to fit the observations. Fast rotation ($\sim 300 km/s$) leads to significant changes of the C/N and O/N surface ratios, but the abundance of He is barely increased. We show that the peculiar surface abundance patterns of Carbon Enhanced Metal Poor (CEMP) stars has been inherited from material having been processed by H- and He-burning phases in a previous generation of stars (hereafter called the ``Source Stars''). In this previous generation, some mixing must have occurred between the He- and the H-burning regions in order to explain the high observed abundances of nitrogen. In addition, it is necessary to postulate that a very small fraction of the carbon-oxygen core has been expelled (either by winds or by the supernova explosion). Therefore only the most outer layers should have been released by the Source Stars. Some of the CEMP stars may be He-rich if the matter from the Source Star is not too much diluted with the InterStellar Medium (ISM). We discuss, in the context of the single star scenario, the nature of the progenitors of Red Supergiants (RSG), of Luminous Blue Variables (LBV) and of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. These three different populations correspond to evolved phases of Main Sequence (MS) OB stars. Axial rotation and mass loss have a great influence on massive star evolution in general and more specifically on the durations of these different phases. Moderate rotation and mass loss, during the MS phase, favor the evolution towards the RSG stage. Fast rotation and strong mass loss during the MS phase, in contrast, prevent the star from becoming a RSG and allow the star to pass directly from the OB star phase into the WR phase. Mass loss during the RSG stage may make the star evolve back in the blue part of the HR diagram. We argue that such an evolution may be more common than presently accounted for in stellar models. This might be the reason for the lack of type IIP SNe with RSG progenitors having initial masses between 18 and 30 M$_\odot$. The LBVs do appear as a possible transition phase between O and WR stars or between WNL and WNE stars. Fast rotation and/or strong mass loss during the Main-Sequence phase prevent the formation of LBV stars. The mechanisms driving the very strong ejections shown by LBV stars are still unknown. We have endeavoured to understand the formation and evolution of the black hole (BH) X-ray binary LMC X-3. We estimate the properties of the system at 4 evolutionary stages: 1) at the Zero Age Main Sequence (ZAMS), 2) just prior to the supernova (SN) explosion of the primary, 3) just after the SN, and 4) at the moment of RLO onset.We use a hybrid approach, combining detailed stellar structure and binary evolution calculations with approximate population synthesis models. This allows us to estimate potential natal kicks and the evolution of the BH spin. In the whole analysis we incorporate as model constraints the most up-to-date observational information, encompassing the binary's orbital properties, the companion star mass, effective temperature, surface gravity and radius, as well as the black hole's mass and spin. We find that LMC X-3 began as a ZAMS system with the mass of the primary star in the range $M_{\rm{1,ZAMS}}$ = 22-31 $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ and a secondary star of $M_{\rm{2,ZAMS}} = 5.0-8.3M_{\odot}$, in a wide ($P_{ZAMS} \gtrsim 2.000\, \rm days$) and eccentric ($e_{\rm{ZAMS}} \gtrsim 0.23$) orbit. Just prior to the SN, the primary has a mass of $M_{\mathrm{1,preSN}} = 11.1-18.0\,\rm M_{\odot}$, with the secondary star largely unaffected. The orbital period decreases to $0.6-1.7\, \rm days$, and is still eccentric $0 \leq e_{\rm{preSN}} \leq 0.44$. We find that a symmetric SN explosion with no or small natal kicks (a few tens of $\rm km\, s^{-1}$) imparted on the BH cannot be formally excluded, however, large natal kicks in excess of $\gtrsim 120 \,\rm km\, s^{-1}$ increase the estimated formation rate by an order of magnitude. Following the SN, the system has a BH $M_{\mathrm{BH,postSN}} = 6.4-8.2\,\rm M_{\odot}$ and is put into an eccentric orbit. Gamma-ray astronomy explores the most energetic photons in nature to address some of the most pressing puzzles in contemporary astrophysics. It encompasses a wide range of objects and phenomena: stars, supernovae, novae, neutron stars, stellar-mass black holes, nucleosynthesis, the interstellar medium, cosmic rays and relativistic-particle acceleration, and the evolution of galaxies. MeV gamma-rays provide a unique probe of nuclear processes in astronomy, directly measuring radioactive decay, nuclear de-excitation, and positron annihilation. The substantial information carried by gamma-ray photons allows us to see deeper into these objects, the bulk of the power is often emitted at gamma-ray energies, and radioactivity provides a natural physical clock that adds unique information. New science will be driven by time-domain population studies at gamma-ray energies. This science is enabled by next-generation gamma-ray instruments with one to two orders of magnitude better sensitivity, larger sky coverage, and faster cadence than all previous gamma-ray instruments. This transformative capability permits: (a) the accurate identification of the gamma-ray emitting objects and correlations with observations taken at other wavelengths and with other messengers; (b) construction of new gamma-ray maps of the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies where extended regions are distinguished from point sources; and (c) considerable serendipitous science of scarce events -- nearby neutron star mergers, for example. The study of the long-dead early generations of massive stars is crucial in order to obtain a complete picture of the chemical evolution of the Universe, hence the origin of the elements. The nature of these stars can be inferred indirectly by investigating the origin of low-mass metal-poor stars observed in our Galaxy, some of which are almost as old as the Universe. The peculiar extremely iron-poor Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars, whose precise origin is still debated, are thought to have formed with the material ejected by only one or very few previous massive stars. The main aim of this thesis is to explore the physics and the nucleosynthesis of the early generations of massive stars.
