Search

Millisecond pulsars are very likely the main source of gamma-ray emission from globular clusters. However, the relative contributions of two separate emission processes--curvature radiation from millisecond pulsar magnetospheres vs. inverse Compton emission from relativistic pairs launched into the globular cluster environment by millisecond pulsars--have long been unclear. To address this, we search for evidence of inverse Compton emission in 8-year $\textit{Fermi}$-LAT data from the directions of 157 Milky Way globular clusters. We find a mildly statistically significant (3.8$\sigma$) correlation between the measured globular cluster gamma-ray luminosities and their photon field energy densities. However, this may also be explained by a hidden correlation between the photon field densities and the stellar encounter rates of globular clusters. Analysed $\textit{in toto}$, we demonstrate that the gamma-ray emission of globular clusters can be resolved spectrally into two components: i) an exponentially cut-off power law and ii) a pure power law. The latter component--which we uncover at a significance of 8.2$\sigma$--has a power index of 2.79 $\pm$ 0.25. It is most naturally interpreted as inverse Compton emission by cosmic-ray electrons and positrons injected by millisecond pulsars. We find the luminosity of this power-law component is comparable to, or slightly smaller than, the luminosity of the curved component, suggesting the fraction of millisecond pulsar spin-down luminosity into relativistic leptons is similar to the fraction of the spin-down luminosity into prompt magnetospheric radiation., Comment: 16+9 pages, 13+4 figures, 4+1 tables. match the published version in MNRAS

Accreting white dwarfs are often found in close binary systems with orbital periods ranging from tens of minutes to several hours. In most cases, the accretion process is relatively steady, with significant modulations only occurring on time-scales of ~days or longer. Here, we report the discovery of abrupt drops in the optical luminosity of the accreting white dwarf binary system TW Pictoris by factors up to 3.5 on time-scales as short as 30 minutes. The optical light curve of this binary system obtained by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) clearly displays fast switches between two distinct intensity modes that likely track the changing mass accretion rate onto the white dwarf. In the low mode, the system also displays magnetically-gated accretion bursts, which implies that a weak magnetic field of the white dwarf truncates the inner disk at the co-rotation radius in this mode. The properties of the mode switching observed in TW Pictoris appear analogous to those observed in transitional millisecond pulsars, where similar transitions occur, although on timescales of ~tens of seconds. Extremely low-mass white dwarfs (ELM WDs) are the result of binary evolution in which a low-mass donor star is stripped by its companion leaving behind a helium-core white dwarf. We explore the formation of ELM WDs in binary systems considering the Convection And Rotation Boosted magnetic braking treatment. Our evolutionary sequences were calculated using the MESA code, with initial masses of 1.0 and 1.2 Msun (donor), and 1.4 (accretor), compatible with low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) systems. We obtain ELM models in the range 0.15 to 0.27 Msun from a broad range of initial orbital periods, 1 to 25 d. The bifurcation period, where the initial period is equal to the final period, ranges from 20 to 25 days. In addition to LMXBs, we show that ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXB) and wide-orbit binary millisecond pulsars can also be formed. The relation between mass and orbital period obtained is compatible with the observational data from He white dwarf companions to pulsars., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures. Transitional millisecond pulsars are millisecond pulsars that switch between a rotation-powered millisecond pulsar state and an accretion-powered X-ray binary state, and are thought to be an evolutionary stage between neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries and millisecond pulsars. So far, only three confirmed systems have been identified in addition to a handful of candidates. We present the results of a multi-wavelength study of the low-mass X-ray binary NGC 6652B in the globular cluster NGC 6652, including simultaneous radio and X-ray observations taken by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and optical spectroscopy and photometry. This source is the second brightest X-ray source in NGC 6652 ($L_{\textrm{X}}\sim1.8\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and is known to be variable. We observe several X-ray flares over the duration of our X-ray observations, in addition to persistent radio emission and occasional radio flares. Simultaneous radio and X-ray data show no clear evidence of anti-correlated variability. Optical spectra of NGC 6652B indicate variable, broad H $\alpha$ emission which transitions from double-peaked emission to absorption over a time-scale of hours. We consider a variety of possible explanations for the source behaviour, and conclude that based on the radio and X-ray luminosities, short time-scale variability and X-ray flaring, and optical spectra, NGC 6652B is best explained as a transitional millisecond pulsar candidate that displays prolonged X-ray flaring behaviour. The rotation of a magnetised accreting neutron star (NS) in a binary system is described by its spin period and two angles: spin inclination $\alpha$ with respect to the orbital momentum and magnetic angle $\chi$ between the spin and the magnetic moment. Magnetospheric accretion spins the NS up and adjusts its rotation axis, decreasing $\alpha$ to nearly perfect alignment. Its effect upon the magnetic angle is more subtle and relatively unstudied. In this work, we model the magnetic angle evolution of a rigid spherical accreting NS. We find that the torque spinning the NS up may affect the magnetic angle while both $\alpha$ and $\chi$ significantly deviate from zero, and the spin-up torque varies with the phase of the spin period. As the rotation axis of the NS is being aligned with the spin-up torque, the magnetic axis becomes misaligned with the rotation axis. Under favourable conditions, magnetic angle may increase by $\Delta \chi \sim 15^\circ-20^\circ$. This orthogonalisation may be an important factor in the evolution of millisecond pulsars, as it partially compensates the $\chi$ decrease potentially caused by pulsar torques. If the direction of the spin-up torque changes randomly with time, as in wind-fed high-mass X-ray binaries, both the rotation axis of the NS and its magnetic axis become involved in a non-linear random-walk evolution. We analyse 55 ks of Chandra X-ray observations of the Galactic globular cluster M13. Using the latest radio timing positions of six known millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in M13 from Wang et al. (2020), we detect confident X-ray counterparts to five of the six MSPs at X-ray luminosities of $L_X$(0.3-8 keV)$\sim 3 \times 10^{30} - 10^{31}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$, including the newly discovered PSR J1641+3627F. There are limited X-ray counts at the position of PSR J1641+3627A, for which we obtain an upper limit $L_X, 9 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Neutron stars receive velocity kicks at birth in supernovae. Those formed in electron-capture supernovae from super asymptotic giant branch stars -- the lowest mass stars to end their lives in supernovae -- may receive significantly lower kicks than typical neutron stars. Given that many massive stars are members of wide binaries, this suggests the existence of a population of low-mass ($1.25 < M_\mathrm{psr} / $M$_\odot < 1.3$), wide ($P_\mathrm{orb} \gtrsim 10^{4}$\,day), eccentric ($e \sim 0.7$), unrecycled ($P_\mathrm{spin} \sim 1$\,s) binary pulsars. The formation rate of such binaries is sensitive to the mass range of (effectively) single stars leading to electron capture supernovae, the amount of mass lost prior to the supernova, and the magnitude of any natal kick imparted on the neutron star. We estimate that one such binary pulsar should be observable in the Milky Way for every 10,000 isolated pulsars, assuming that the width of the mass range of single stars leading to electron-capture supernovae is $\lesssim 0.2$\,M$_\odot$, and that neutron stars formed in electron-capture supernovae receive typical kicks less than 10\,km s$^{-1}$. We have searched the catalog of observed binary pulsars, but find no convincing candidates that could be formed through this channel, consistent with this low predicted rate. Future observations with the Square Kilometre Array may detect this rare sub-class of binary pulsar and provide strong constraints on the properties of electron-capture supernovae and their progenitors., Accepted to MNRAS. 7 pages, 2 figures

While the majority of massive stars have a stellar companion, most pulsars appear to be isolated. Taken at face value, this suggests that most massive binaries break apart due to strong natal kicks received in supernova explosions. However, the observed binary fraction can still be subject to strong selection effects, as monitoring of newly discovered pulsars is rarely carried out for long enough to conclusively rule out multiplicity. Here, we use the second Gaia Data Release (DR2) to search for companions to 1534 rotation-powered pulsars with positions known to better than 0.5 arcseconds. We find 22 matches to known pulsars, including one not reported elsewhere, and 8 new possible companions to young pulsars. We examine the photometric and kinematic properties of these systems and provide empirical relations for identifying Gaia sources with potential millisecond pulsar companions. Our results confirm that the observed multiplicity fraction is small. However, we show that the number of binaries below the sensitivity of Gaia and radio timing in our sample could still be significantly higher. We constrain the binary fraction of young pulsars to be $f_{\rm young}^{\rm true}\leq 5.3(8.3)\%$ under realistic(conservative) assumptions for the binary properties and current sensitivity thresholds. For massive stars ($\geq 10$ M$_{\odot}$) in particular, we find $f_{\rm OB}^{\rm true}\leq 3.7\%$ which sets a firm independent upper limit on the galactic neutron-star merger rate, $\leq 7.2\times 10^{-4}$ yr$^{-1}$. The SUrvey for Pulsars and Extragalactic Radio Bursts ran from 2014 April to 2019 August, covering a large fraction of the southern hemisphere at mid- to high-galactic latitudes, and consisting of 9-minute pointings taken with the 20-cm multibeam receiver on the Parkes Radio Telescope. Data up to 2017 September 21 have been searched using standard Fourier techniques, single-pulse searches, and Fast Folding Algorithm searches. We present 19 new discoveries, bringing the total to 27 discoveries in the programme, and we report the results of follow-up timing observations at Parkes for 26 of these pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar PSR J1421-4409; the faint, highly-modulated, slow pulsar PSR J1646-1910; and the nulling pulsar PSR J1337-4441. In this paper, we consider triple systems composed of main-sequence (MS) stars, and their internal evolution due to stellar and binary evolution. Our focus is on triples that produce white dwarfs (WDs), where Roche lobe overflow of an evolving tertiary triggers accretion onto the inner binary via a circumbinary disk (CBD) driving it toward a mass ratio of unity. We present a combination of analytic- and population synthesis-based calculations performed using the \texttt{SeBa} code to constrain the expected frequency of such systems, given a realistic initial population of MS triples, and provide the predicted distributions of orbital periods. We identify the parameter space for triples that can accommodate a CBD, to inform future numerical simulations of suitable initial conditions. We find that $\lesssim$ 10\% of all MS triples should be able to accommodate a CBD around the inner binary, and compute lower limits for the production rates. This scenario broadly predicts mergers of near equal-mass binaries, producing blue stragglers (BSs), Type Ia supernovae, gamma ray bursts and gravitational wave-induced mergers, along with the presence of an outer WD tertiary companion. We compare our predicted distributions to a sample of field BS binaries, and argue that our proposed mechanism explains the observed range of orbital periods. Finally, the mechanism considered here could produce hypervelocity MS stars, WDs and even millisecond pulsars with masses close to the Chandrasekhar mass limit, and be used to constrain the maximum remnant masses at the time of any supernova explosion., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Recent observational studies of $\gamma$-ray emission from massive globular clusters (GCs) have revealed possible evidence of dark matter (DM) annihilation within GCs. It is, however, still controversial whether the emission comes from DM or from milli-second pulsars. We here present the new results of numerical simulations, which demonstrate that GCs with DM can originate from nucleated dwarfs orbiting the ancient MW. The simulated stripped nuclei (i.e., GCs) have the central DM densities ranging from 0.1 to several ${\rm M_\odot pc^{-3}}$, depending on the orbits and the masses of the host dwarf galaxies. However, GCs born outside the central regions of their hosts can have no/little DM after their hosts are destroyed and the GCs become the Galactic halo GCs. These results suggest that only GCs originating from stellar nuclei of dwarfs can possibly have DM. We further calculate the expected $\gamma$-ray emission from these simulated GCs and compare them to observations of $\omega$ Cen. Given the large range of DM densities in the simulated GCs, we suggest that the recent possible detection of DM annihilation from GCs should be more carefully interpreted., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in MNRAS

Binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) provide several opportunities for research of fundamental physics. However, finding them can be challenging. Several subdwarf B (sdB) binary systems with possible neutron star companions have been identified, allowing us to perform a targeted search for MSPs within these systems. Six sdBs with companions in the neutron star mass range, as determined from their optical light curves, were observed with the Green Bank and Westerbork radio telescopes. The data were searched for periodic signals as well as single pulses. No radio pulsations from sdB systems were detected, down to an average sensitivity limit of 0.11 mJy. We did, however, discover a pulsar in the field of sdB HE0532-4503. Follow-up observations with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope showed that this pulsar, J0533-4524, is not spatially coincident with the sdB system. The pulsar has a relatively low magnetic field but still emits giant pulses. We place an upper limit of three to the number of radio pulsars in the six sdB systems. The non-detections may be explained by a combination of the MSP beaming fraction, luminosity, and a recycling fraction, 12 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Young isolated neutron stars (INS) most commonly manifest themselves as rotationally powered pulsars (RPPs) which involve conventional radio pulsars as well as gamma-ray pulsars (GRPs) and rotating radio transients (RRATs). Some other young INS families manifest themselves as anomalous X-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) which are commonly accepted as magnetars, i.e. magnetically powered neutron stars with decaying superstrong fields. Yet some other young INS are identified as central compact objects (CCOs) and X-ray dim isolated neutron stars (XDINSs) which are cooling objects powered by their thermal energy. Older pulsars, as a result of a previous long episode of accretion from a companion, manifest themselves as millisecond pulsars and more commonly appear in binary systems. We use Dirichlet process Gaussian mixture model (DPGMM), an unsupervised machine learning algorithm, for analyzing the distribution of these pulsar families in the parameter space of period and period derivative. We compare the average values of the characteristic age, magnetic dipole field strength, surface temperature and transverse velocity of all discovered clusters. We verify that DPGMM is robust and provides hints for inferring relations between different classes of pulsars. Binaries harbouring millisecond pulsars enable a unique path to determine neutron star masses: radio pulsations reveal the motion of the neutron star, while that of the companion can be characterised through studies in the optical range. PSR J1012+5307 is a millisecond pulsar in a 14.5-h orbit with a helium-core white dwarf companion. In this work we present the analysis of an optical spectroscopic campaign, where the companion star absorption features reveal one of the lightest known white dwarfs. We determine a white dwarf radial velocity semi-amplitude of K_2 = 218.9 +- 2.2 km/s, which combined with that of the pulsar derived from the precise radio timing, yields a mass ratio of q=10.44+- 0.11. We also attempt to infer the white dwarf mass from observational constraints using new binary evolution models for extremely low-mass white dwarfs, but find that they cannot reproduce all observed parameters simultaneously. In particular, we cannot reconcile the radius predicted from binary evolution with the measurement from the photometric analysis (R_WD=0.047+-0.003 Rsun). Our limited understanding of extremely low-mass white dwarf evolution, which results from binary interaction, therefore comes as the main factor limiting the precision with which we can measure the mass of the white dwarf in this system. Our conservative white dwarf mass estimate of M_WD = 0.165 +- 0.015 Msun, along with the mass ratio enables us to infer a pulsar mass of M_NS = 1.72 +- 0.16 Msun. This value is clearly above the canonical 1.4 Msun, therefore adding PSR J1012+5307 to the growing list of massive millisecond pulsars., 13 pages, 7 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The 559 Hz black-widow pulsar PSR J1555-2908, originally discovered in radio, is also a bright gamma-ray pulsar. Timing its pulsations using 12 yr of Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data reveals long-term variations in its spin frequency that are much larger than is observed from other millisecond pulsars. While this variability in the pulsar rotation rate could be intrinsic "timing noise", here we consider an alternative explanation: the variations arise from the presence of a very-low-mass third object in a wide multi-year orbit around the neutron star and its low-mass companion. With current data, this hierarchical-triple-system model describes the pulsar's rotation slightly more accurately than the best-fitting timing-noise model. We report the discovery of two Black Widow millisecond pulsars in the globular cluster M28 with the MeerKAT telescope. PSR J1824$-$2452M (M28M) is a 4.78-ms pulsar in a $5.82\,$hour orbit and PSR J1824$-$2452N (M28N) is a 3.35-ms pulsar in a $4.76\,$hour orbit. Both pulsars have dispersion measures near $119.30\,$pc$\,$cm$^{-3}$ and have low mass companion stars ($\sim$$0.01-0.03\,$M$_\odot$), which do not cause strong radio eclipses or orbital variations. Including these systems, there are now five known black widow pulsars in M28. The pulsar searches were conducted as a part of an initial phase of MeerKAT's globular cluster census (within the TRAPUM Large Survey Project). We present a pulse timing analysis of NICER observations of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4$-$3658 during the outburst that started on 2022 August 19. Similar to previous outbursts, after decaying from a peak luminosity of $\simeq 1\times10^{36} \, \mathrm{erg \, s^{-1}}$ in about a week, the pulsar entered in a $\sim 1$ month-long reflaring stage. Comparison of the average pulsar spin frequency during the outburst with those previously measured confirmed the long-term spin derivative of $\dot{\nu}_{\textrm{SD}}=-(1.15\pm0.06)\times 10^{-15} \, \mathrm{Hz\,s^{-1}}$, compatible with the spin-down torque of a $\approx 10^{26} \, \mathrm{G \, cm^3}$ rotating magnetic dipole. For the first time in the last twenty years, the orbital phase evolution shows evidence for a decrease of the orbital period. The long-term behaviour of the orbit is dominated by a $\sim 11 \, \mathrm{s}$ modulation of the orbital phase epoch consistent with a $\sim 21 \, \mathrm{yr}$ period. We discuss the observed evolution in terms of a coupling between the orbit and variations in the mass quadrupole of the companion star., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 1 table. The electric field accelerating electrons in the Timokhin-Arons polar-cap model as applied to millisecond pulsars is so high that the electron Lorentz factors are limited either by radiation reaction or by the Breit-Wheeler process. In the former case, it is possible to obtain an upper limit for curvature radiation momentum components perpendicular to the local magnetic field which is independent of the flux-line radius of curvature. The threshold value for single-photon conversion to pairs is high but is possibly reached in J0030+0451. However, owing to the high polar-cap temperature reported, direct pair production by the Breit-Wheeler process is probably more important. If the existence of coherent radio emission in millisecond pulsars is assumed to need a high-multiplicity pair plasma, then it follows that the primary electrons also produce gamma-rays in the Fermi-LAT energy band for which the magnetosphere is completely transparent. The absence of these, in phase with the radio emission, would be an immediate indication that ultra-high energy electrons and an active Timokhin-Arons polar cap are not present in J0030+0451., Comment: 4 pages; to be published in MNRAS Letters

4FGL J0935.5+0901, a $\gamma$-ray source recently identified as a candidate redback-type millisecond pulsar binary (MSP), shows an interesting feature of having double-peaked emission lines in its optical spectrum. The feature would further suggest the source as a transitional MSP system in the sub-luminous disk state. We have observed the source with \xmm\ and Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) at X-ray and radio frequencies respectivelyfor further studies. From the X-ray observation, a bimodal count-rate distribution, which is a distinctive feature of the transitional MSP systems, is not detected, while the properties of X-ray variability and power-law spectrum are determined for the source. These results help establish the consistency of it being a redback in the radio pulsar state. However no radio pulsation signals are found in the FAST observation, resulting an upper limit on the flux density of $\sim 4\,\mu$Jy. We present the results of simultaneous observations of the transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) candidate CXOU J110926.4-650224 with the XMM-Newton satellite and the MeerKAT telescope. The source was found at an average X-ray luminosity of $L_{\rm X}\simeq7\times10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$ over the 0.3-10 keV band (assuming a distance of 4 kpc) and displayed a peculiar variability pattern in the X-ray emission, switching between high, low and flaring modes on timescales of tens of seconds. A radio counterpart was detected at a significance of 7.9$\sigma$ with an average flux density of $\simeq$33$\mu$Jy at 1.28 GHz. It showed variability over the course of hours and emitted a $\simeq$10-min long flare just a few minutes after a brief sequence of multiple X-ray flares. No clear evidence for a significant correlated or anticorrelated variability pattern was found between the X-ray and radio emissions over timescales of tens of minutes and longer. CXOU J110926.4-650224 was undetected at higher radio frequencies in subsequent observations performed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, when the source was still in the same X-ray sub-luminous state observed before, down to a flux density upper limit of 15$\mu$Jy at 7.25 GHz (at 3$\sigma$). We compare the radio emission properties of CXOU J110926.4-650224 with those observed in known and candidate tMSPs and discuss physical scenarios that may account for its persistent and flaring radio emissions., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. The origins of the diffuse flux of cosmogenic PeV neutrinos detected in the IceCube experiment during 2010 - 2017 remain unidentified. A population of extragalactic newly born fast spinning pulsars are investigated as possible candidates for generating the PeV energy scale neutrinos. A two-step mechanism of particle acceleration is adopted for transferring energy from star rotation to high energy electrons. Electrons might be boosted up to $\approx 0.01$ EeV energies and above, and produce ultra-high-energy (UHE) neutrinos and gamma rays when these electrons interact with low energy positrons and soft radiations in the acceleration zone. The theoretically derived extragalactic diffuse muon neutrino flux in the energy range [1-10] PeV is found consistent with the IceCube level if only a fraction ($\eta_{k} \approx 0.31\%$) of the total bolometric luminosity of pulsars are transferred to power the PeV neutrinos. Using the above value of the cosmic ray electron loading parameter $\eta_{k}$, the diffuse gamma ray flux from inverse Compton scattering off UHE electrons in the soft radiation field might be predicted from the model., Comment: 10 pages, 0 figures

We report the results of a deep search for faint Chandra X-ray sources, radio sources, and optical counterparts in the nearby, core-collapsed globular cluster, NGC 6752. We combined new and archival Chandra imaging to detect 51 X-ray sources (12 of which are new) within the 1.9 arcmin half-light radius. Three radio sources in deep ATCA 5 and 9 GHz radio images match with Chandra sources. We have searched for optical identifications for the expanded Chandra source list using deep Hubble Space Telescope photometry in B, R, H-alpha, UV, and U. Among the entire sample of 51 Chandra sources, we identify 18 cataclysmic variables (CVs), 9 chromospherically active binaries (ABs), 3 red giants (RGs), 3 galaxies (GLXs), and 6 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Three of the sources are associated with millisecond pulsars (MSPs). As in our previous study of NGC 6752, we find that the brightest CVs appear to be more centrally concentrated than are the faintest CVs, although the effect is no longer statistically significant as a consequence of the inclusion in the faint group of two intermediate brightness CVs. This possible difference in the radial distributions of the bright and faint CV groups appears to indicate that mass segregation has separated them. We note that photometric incompleteness in the crowded central region of the cluster may also play a role. Both groups of CVs have an inferred mass above that of the main-sequence turnoff stars. The Variables and Slow Transients Survey (VAST) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is designed to detect highly variable and transient radio sources on timescales from 5 s to$\sim\!5$yr. In this paper, we present the survey description, observation strategy and initial results from the VAST Phase I Pilot Survey. This pilot survey consists of$\sim\!162$h of observations conducted at a central frequency of 888 MHz between 2019 August and 2020 August, with a typical rms sensitivity of$0.24\ \mathrm{mJy\ beam}^{-1}$and angular resolution of$12-20$arcseconds. There are 113 fields, each of which was observed for 12 min integration time, with between 5 and 13 repeats, with cadences between 1 day and 8 months. The total area of the pilot survey footprint is 5 131 square degrees, covering six distinct regions of the sky. An initial search of two of these regions, totalling 1 646 square degrees, revealed 28 highly variable and/or transient sources. Seven of these are known pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar J2039–5617. Another seven are stars, four of which have no previously reported radio detection (SCR J0533–4257, LEHPM 2-783, UCAC3 89–412162 and 2MASS J22414436–6119311). Of the remaining 14 sources, two are active galactic nuclei, six are associated with galaxies and the other six have no multi-wavelength counterparts and are yet to be identified.

High sensitivity radio searches of unassociated $\gamma$-ray sources have proven to be an effective way of finding new pulsars. Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) during its commissioning phase, we have carried out a number of targeted deep searches of \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT) $\gamma$-ray sources. On Feb. 27$^{th}$, 2018 we discovered an isolated millisecond pulsar (MSP), PSR J0318+0253, coincident with the unassociated $\gamma$-ray source 3FGL J0318.1+0252. PSR J0318+0253 has a spin period of $5.19$ milliseconds, a dispersion measure (DM) of $26$ pc cm$^{-3}$ corresponding to a DM distance of about $1.3$ kpc, and a period-averaged flux density of $\sim$11 $\pm$ 2 $\mu$Jy at L-band (1.05-1.45 GHz). Among all high energy MSPs, PSR J0318+0253 is the faintest ever detected in radio bands, by a factor of at least $\sim$4 in terms of L-band fluxes. With the aid of the radio ephemeris, an analysis of 9.6 years of \textit{Fermi}-LAT data revealed that PSR J0318+0253 also displays strong $\gamma$-ray pulsations. Follow-up observations carried out by both Arecibo and FAST suggest a likely spectral turn-over around 350 MHz. This is the first result from the collaboration between FAST and the \textit{Fermi}-LAT teams as well as the first confirmed new MSP discovery by FAST, raising hopes for the detection of many more MSPs. Detecting continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) generated by individual close binaries of supermassive black holes (CB-SMBHs) is one of the primary objectives of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The detection sensitivity is slated to increase significantly as the number of well-timed millisecond pulsars will increase by more than an order of magnitude with the advent of next-generation radio telescopes. Currently, the Bayesian analysis pipeline using parallel tempering Markov chain Monte Carlo has been applied in multiple studies for CB-SMBH searches, but it may be challenged by the high dimensionality of the parameter space for future large-scale PTAs. One solution is to reduce the dimensionality by maximizing or marginalizing over uninformative parameters semi-analytically, but it is not clear whether this approach can be extended to more complex signal models without making overly simplified assumptions. Recently, the method of diffusive nested (DNest) sampling shown the capability of coping with high dimensionality and multimodality effectively in Bayesian analysis. In this paper, we apply DNest to search for continuous GWs in simulated pulsar timing residuals and find that it performs well in terms of accuracy, robustness, and efficiency for a PTA including $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ pulsars. DNest also allows a simultaneous search of multiple sources elegantly, which demonstrates its scalability and general applicability. We report observed and derived timing parameters for three millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from observations collected with the Parkes 64-m telescope, Murriyang. The pulsars were found during re-processing of archival survey data by Mickaliger et al. One of the new pulsars (PSR J1546-5925) has a spin period $P=7.8$ ms and is isolated. The other two (PSR J0921-5202 with $P=9.7$ ms and PSR J1146-6610 with $P=3.7$ ms) are in binary systems around low-mass ($>0.2 M_{\odot}$) companions. Their respective orbital periods are $38$.2 d and $62.8$ d. While PSR J0921-5202 has a low orbital eccentricity $e=1.3 \times 10^{-5}$, in keeping with many other Galactic MSPs, PSR J1146-6610 has a significantly larger eccentricity, $e = 7.4 \times 10^{-3}$. This makes it a likely member of a group of eccentric MSP-He white dwarf binary systems in the Galactic disk whose formation is poorly understood. Two of the pulsars are co-located with previously unidentified point sources discovered with the Fermi satellite's Large Area Telescope, but no $\gamma$-ray pulsations have been detected, likely due to their low spin-down powers. Pulsar winds interacting with sources of external pressure are well-established as efficient and prolific TeV accelerators in our Galaxy. Yet, enabled by observations from Fermi-LAT, a growing class of non-accreting pulsars in binaries has emerged and these are likely to become apparent as TeV emitters in the CTA era. This class consists of the black widows and redbacks, binaries in which a millisecond pulsar interacts with its low-mass companion. In such systems, an intrabinary shock can form as a site of particle acceleration and associated nonthermal emission. We motivate why these sources are particularly interesting for understanding pulsar winds. We also describe our new multizone code which models the X-ray and gamma-ray synchrotron and inverse Compton spectral components for select spider binaries, including diffusion, convection, and radiative energy losses in an axially symmetric, steady-state approach. This new multizone code simultaneously yields energy-dependent light curves and orbital-phase-resolved spectra. It also better constrains the multiplicity of electron/positron pairs that have been accelerated up to TeV energies and are necessary to power orbitally-modulated synchrotron emission components between the X-rays and MeV/GeV bands potentially observed in some systems. This affords a more robust prediction of the expected high-energy and VHE gamma-ray flux. Nearby MSPs with hot or flaring companions may be promising targets for CTA, and it is possible that spider binaries could contribute to the observed AMS-02 energetic positron excess., Comment: Presented at the 37th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2021)

If the mysterious Fermi-LAT GeV gamma-ray excess is due to an unresolved population of millisecond pulsars (MSP) in the Galactic bulge, one expects this very same population to shine in X rays. For the first time, we address the question of what is the sensitivity of current X-ray telescopes to an MSP population in the Galactic bulge. To this end, we create a synthetic population of Galactic MSPs, building on an empirical connection between gamma- and X-ray MSP emission based on observed source properties. We compare our model with compact sources in the latest Chandra source catalog, applying selections based on spectral observables and optical astrometry with Gaia. We find a significant number of Chandra sources in the region of interest to be consistent with being bulge MSPs that are as yet unidentified. This motivates dedicated multi-wavelength searches for bulge MSPs: Some promising directions are briefly discussed., 14 pages, 7 figures. Matches version published in PRD

A nanohertz-frequency stochastic gravitational-wave background can potentially be detected through the precise timing of an array of millisecond pulsars. This background produces low-frequency noise in the pulse arrival times that would have a characteristic spectrum common to all pulsars and a well-defined spatial correlation. Recently the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves collaboration (NANOGrav) found evidence for the common-spectrum component in their 12.5-year data set. Here we report on a search for the background using the second data release of the Parkes Pulsar Timing Array. If we are forced to choose between the two NANOGrav models $\unicode{x2014}$ one with a common-spectrum process and one without $\unicode{x2014}$ we find strong support for the common-spectrum process. However, in this paper, we consider the possibility that the analysis suffers from model misspecification. In particular, we present simulated data sets that contain noise with distinctive spectra but show strong evidence for a common-spectrum process under the standard assumptions. The Parkes data show no significant evidence for, or against, the spatially correlated Hellings-Downs signature of the gravitational-wave background. Assuming we did observe the process underlying the spatially uncorrelated component of the background, we infer its amplitude to be $A = 2.2^{+0.4}_{-0.3} \times 10^{-15}$ in units of gravitational-wave strain at a frequency of $1\, \text{yr}^{-1}$. Extensions and combinations of existing and new data sets will improve the prospects of identifying spatial correlations that are necessary to claim a detection of the gravitational-wave background., 10 pages, 5 figures

The repeating fast radio burst (FRB) localized to a globular cluster in M81 challenges our understanding of FRB models. In this Letter, we explore dynamical formation scenarios for objects in old globular clusters that may plausibly power FRBs. Using N-body simulations, we demonstrate that young neutron stars may form in globular clusters at a rate of up to $\sim50\,\rm{Gpc}^{-3}\,\rm{yr}^{-1}$ through a combination of binary white dwarf mergers, white dwarf--neutron star mergers, binary neutron star mergers, and accretion induced collapse of massive white dwarfs in binary systems. We consider two FRB emission mechanisms: First, we show that a magnetically-powered source (e.g., a magnetar with field strength $\gtrsim10^{14}\,$G) is viable for radio emission efficiencies $\gtrsim10^{-4}$. This would require magnetic activity lifetimes longer than the associated spin-down timescales and longer than empirically-constrained lifetimes of Galactic magnetars. Alternatively, if these dynamical formation channels produce young rotation-powered neutron stars with spin periods of $\sim10\,$ms and magnetic fields of $\sim10^{11}\,$G (corresponding to spin-down lifetimes of $\gtrsim10^5\,$yr), the inferred event rate and energetics can be reasonably reproduced for order unity duty cycles. Additionally, we show that recycled millisecond pulsars or low-mass X-ray binaries similar to those well-observed in Galactic globular clusters may also be plausible channels, but only if their duty cycle for producing bursts similar to the M81 FRB is small., 11 pages, 2 tables, 1 figure. A numerical rotating neutron star solver is used to study the temporal evolution of accreting neutron stars using a multi-polytrope model for the nuclear equation of state named ACB5. The solver is based on a quadrupole expansion of the metric, but confirms the results of previous works, revealing the possibility of an abrupt transition of a neutron star from a purely hadronic branch to a third-family branch of stable hybrid stars, passing through an unstable intermediate branch. The accretion is described through a sequence of stationary rotating {stellar} configurations which lose angular momentum through magnetic dipole emission while, at the same time, gaining angular momentum through mass accretion. The model has several free parameters which are inferred from observations. The mass accretion scenario is studied in dependence on the effectiveness of angular momentum transfer which determines at which spin frequency the neutron star will become unstable against gravitational collapse to the corresponding hybrid star on the stable third-family branch. It is conceivable that the neutrino burst which accompanies the deconfinement transition may trigger a pulsar kick which results in the eccentric orbit. We investigate the spin dynamics of a millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a tightly bounded orbit around a massive black hole. These binaries are progenitors of the extreme-mass-ratio-inspirals (EMRIs) and intermediate-mass-ratio-inspirals (IMRIs) gravitational wave events. The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) formulation is used to determine the orbital motion and spin modulation and evolution. We show that the MSP will not be confined in a planar Keplerian orbit and its spin will exhibit precession and nutation induced by spin-orbit coupling and spin-curvature interaction. These spin and orbital behaviours will manifest observationally in the temporal variations in the MSP's pulsed emission and, with certain geometries, in the self-occultation of the pulsar's emitting poles. Radio pulsar timing observations will be able to detect such signatures. These extreme-mass-ratio binaries (EMRBs) and intermediate-mass-ratio binaries (IMRBs) are also strong gravitational wave sources. Combining radio pulsar timing and gravitational wave observations will allow us to determine the dynamics of these systems in high precision and hence the subtle behaviours of spinning masses in strong gravity.

We study the dynamics and evolution of the Milky Way nuclear star cluster performing a high resolution direct one-million-body simulation. Focusing on the interactions between such stellar system and the central supermassive black hole, we find that different stellar components adapt their overall distribution differently. After 5 Gyr, stellar mass black holes are characterized by a spatial distribution with power-slope $-1.75$, fully consistent with the prediction of Bahcall-Wolf pioneering work. Using the vast amount of data available, we infer the rate for tidal disruption events, being $4 \times 10^{-6}$ per yr, and estimate the number of objects that emit gravitational waves during the phases preceding the accretion onto the super-massive black hole, $\sim 270$ per Gyr. We show that some of these sources could form extreme mass-ratio inspirals. We follow the evolution of binary stars population, showing that the initial binary fraction of $5\%$ drops down to $2.5\%$ inside the inner parsec. We report the discovery of a new low-mass X-ray binary near the center of the unassociated Fermi GeV gamma-ray source 4FGL J0540.0-7552. The source shows the persistent presence of an optical accretion disk and exhibits extreme X-ray and optical variability. It also has an X-ray spectrum well-fit by a hard power law with a Gamma = 1.8 and a high ratio of X-ray to gamma-ray flux. Together, these properties are consistent with the classification of the binary as a transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) in the sub-luminous disk state. Uniquely among the candidate tMSPs, 4FGL J0540.0-7552 shows consistent optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray evidence for having undergone a state change, becoming substantially brighter in the optical and X-rays and fainter in GeV gamma-rays sometime in mid-2013. In its current sub-luminous disk state, and like one other candidate tMSP in the Galactic field, 4FGL J0540.0-7552 appears to always be in an X-ray "flare mode", indicating that this could be common phenomenology for tMSPs., ApJ in press

We investigate the possible presence of dark matter (DM) in massive and rotating neutron stars (NSs). For the purpose we extend our previous work [1] to introduce a light new physics vector mediator besides a scalar one in order to ensure feeble interaction between fermionic DM and $\beta$ stable hadronic matter in NSs. The masses of DM fermion, the mediators and the couplings are chosen consistent with the self-interaction constraint from Bullet cluster and from present day relic abundance. Assuming that both the scalar and vector mediators contribute equally to the relic abundance, we compute the equation of state (EoS) of the DM admixed NSs to find that the present consideration of the vector new physics mediator do not bring any significant change to the EoS and static NS properties of DM admixed NSs compared to the case where only the scalar mediator was considered [1]. However, the obtained structural properties in static conditions are in good agreement with the various constraints on them from massive pulsars like PSR J0348+0432 and PSR J0740+6620, the gravitational wave (GW170817) data and the recently obtained results of NICER experiments for PSR J0030+0451 and PSR J0740+6620. We also extended our work to compute the rotational properties of DM admixed NSs rotating at different angular velocities. The present results in this regard suggest that the secondary component of GW190814 may be a rapidly rotating massive DM admixed NS. The constraints on rotational frequency from pulsars like PSR B1937+21 and PSR J1748-2446ad are also satisfied by our present results. Also, the constraints on moment of inertia are satisfied considering slow rotation. Discovery of pulsars is one of the main goals for large radio telescopes. The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), that incorporates an L-band 19-beam receiver with a system temperature of about 20~K, is the most sensitive radio telescope utilized for discovering pulsars. We designed the {\it snapshot} observation mode for a FAST key science project, the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey, in which every four nearby pointings can observe {\it a cover} of a sky patch of 0.1575 square degrees through beam-switching of the L-band 19-beam receiver. The integration time for each pointing is 300 seconds so that the GPPS observations for a cover can be made in 21 minutes. The goal of the GPPS survey is to discover pulsars within the Galactic latitude of $\pm10^{\circ}$ from the Galactic plane, and the highest priority is given to the inner Galaxy within $\pm5^{\circ}$. Up to now, the GPPS survey has discovered 201 pulsars, including currently the faintest pulsars which cannot be detected by other telescopes, pulsars with extremely high dispersion measures (DMs) which challenge the currently widely used models for the Galactic electron density distribution, pulsars coincident with supernova remnants, 40 millisecond pulsars, 16 binary pulsars, some nulling and mode-changing pulsars and rotating radio transients (RRATs). The follow-up observations for confirmation of new pulsars have polarization-signals recorded for polarization profiles of the pulsars. Re-detection of previously known pulsars in the survey data also leads to significant improvements in parameters for 64 pulsars. PSR J0740$+$6620 has a gravitational mass of $2.08\pm 0.07~M_\odot$, which is the highest reliably determined mass of any neutron star. As a result, a measurement of its radius will provide unique insight into the properties of neutron star core matter at high densities. Here we report a radius measurement based on fits of rotating hot spot patterns to Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM-Newton) X-ray observations. We find that the equatorial circumferential radius of PSR J0740$+$6620 is $13.7^{+2.6}_{-1.5}$ km (68%). We apply our measurement, combined with the previous NICER mass and radius measurement of PSR J0030$+$0451, the masses of two other $\sim 2~M_\odot$ pulsars, and the tidal deformability constraints from two gravitational wave events, to three different frameworks for equation of state modeling, and find consistent results at $\sim 1.5-3$ times nuclear saturation density. For a given framework, when all measurements are included the radius of a $1.4~M_\odot$ neutron star is known to $\pm 4$% (68% credibility) and the radius of a $2.08~M_\odot$ neutron star is known to $\pm 5$%. The full radius range that spans the $\pm 1\sigma$ credible intervals of all the radius estimates in the three frameworks is $12.45\pm 0.65$ km for a $1.4~M_\odot$ neutron star and $12.35\pm 0.75$ km for a $2.08~M_\odot$ neutron star., Comment: 49 pages, 16 figures, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Close-orbit low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), radio binary millisecond pulsars (BMSPs) with extremely low-mass helium WDs (ELM He~WDs) and ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) are all part of the same evolutionary sequence. It is therefore of uttermost importance to understand how these populations evolve from one specie to another. Moreover, UCXBs are important gravitational wave (GW) sources and can be detected by future space-borne GW observatories. However, the formation and evolutionary link between these three different populations of neutron star (NS) binaries are not fully understood. In particular, a peculiar fine-tuning problem has previously been demonstrated for the formation of these systems. In this investigation, we test a newly suggested magnetic braking prescription and model the formation and evolution of LMXBs. We compute a grid of binary evolution models and present the initial parameter space of the progenitor binaries which successfully evolve all the way to produce UCXBs. We find that the initial orbital period range of LMXBs, which evolve into detached NS+ELM~He~WD binaries and later UCXBs, becomes significantly wider compared to evolution with a standard magnetic braking prescription, and thus helps to relieve the fine-tuning problem. However, we also find that formation of wide-orbit BMSPs is prohibited for strong versions of this new magnetic braking prescription, which therefore calls for a revision of the prescription. We present radio observation of a millisecond pulsar PSR J0621+1002 using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The pulsar shows periodic pulse intensity modulations for both the first and the third pulse components. The fluctuation spectrum of the first pulse component has one peak of 3.0$\pm$0.1 pulse periods, while that of the third pulse component has two diffused peaks of 3.0$\pm$0.1 and 200$\pm$1 pulse periods. The single pulse timing analysis is carried out for this pulsar and the single pulses can be divided into two classes based on the post-fit timing residuals. We examined the achievable timing precision using only the pulses in one class or bright pulses. Binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are detached binary systems consisting of a MSP and a He white dwarf. If the initial orbital periods of binary MSPs are less than 0.3 day, they would evolve toward ultra-compact binary pulsars due to the rapid orbital shrinkage by the gravitational wave (GW) radiation. During the orbital decay, the MSP with an ellipticity would spin down by the GW radiation and the magnetic dipole radiation. Our calculations indicate that the angular momentum loss is dominated by the GW radiation when the ellipticities of the neutron stars (NSs) are in the range of $(1-50)\times 10^{-7}$, and the frequencies of high-frequency GW signals from the rotating NSs are $10-100$ Hz when the binary pulsars can be visible as low-frequency GW sources. These high-frequency GW signals are possible to be detected by the aLIGO and the third-generation GW detectors such as Einstein Telescope, depending on the frequencies and the distances. Therefore, some ultra-compact binary pulsars have an opportunity to become intriguing dual-line GW sources. By detecting the low-frequency GW signals, the NS mass can be accurately derived. A dual-line detection of two band GW signals could provide a constraint on the moment of inertia and the ellipticity of the NS. The accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar Swift J1756.9$-$2508 went into outburst in April 2018 and June 2019, 8.7 yr after the previous activity period. We investigated the temporal, timing and spectral properties of these two outbursts using data from NICER, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, Swift and Insight-HXMT. The two outbursts exhibited similar broad-band spectra and X-ray pulse profiles. For the first time, we report the detection of the pulsed emission up to $\sim100$ keV observed by Insight-HXMT during the 2018 outburst. We also found the pulsation up to $\sim60$ keV observed by NICER and NuSTAR during the 2019 outburst. We performed a coherent timing analysis combining the data from two outbursts. The binary system is well described by a constant orbital period over a time span of $\sim12$ years. The time-averaged broad-band spectra are well fitted by an absorbed thermal Comptonization model in a slab geometry with the electron temperature $kT_{\rm e}=40$-50 keV, Thomson optical depth $\tau\sim 1.3$, blackbody seed photon temperature $kT_{\rm bb,seed}\sim $0.7-0.8 keV and hydrogen column density of $N_{\rm H}\sim 4.2\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. We searched the available data for type-I (thermonuclear) X-ray bursts, but found none, which is unsurprising given the estimated low peak accretion rate ($\approx0.05$ of the Eddington rate) and generally low expected burst rates for hydrogen-poor fuel. Based on the history of four outbursts to date, we estimate the long-term average accretion rate at roughly $5\times10^{-12}\ M_\odot\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ for an assumed distance of 8 kpc. The expected mass transfer rate driven by gravitational radiation in the binary implies the source can be no closer than 4 kpc., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The Argentine Institute of Radio astronomy (IAR) is equipped with two single-dish 30-m radio antennas capable of performing daily observations of pulsars and radio transients in the southern hemisphere at 1.4 GHz. We aim to contribute to pulsar timing studies related to short time-scale interstellar scintillation and searches for sources of continuous gravitational waves. We performed high-cadence (almost daily) and long-duration observations of the bright millisecond pulsar J0437$-$4715 for over a year, gathering more than 700 hours of good-quality data with timing precision better than 1~$\mu$s. We characterize the white and red timing noise in IAR's observations of J0437$-$4715. We quantify the effects of scintillation in this data set and perform single pulsar searches of continuous gravitational waves, setting constraints in the nHz--$\mu$Hz frequency range. We demonstrate IAR's potential for performing pulsar monitoring in the 1.4 GHz radio band for long periods of time with a daily cadence. A new population of neutron stars has emerged during the last decade: compact binary millisecond pulsars (CBMSPs). Because these pulsars and their companion stars are in tight orbits with typical separations of $10^{11}$ cm, their winds interact strongly forming an intrabinary shock. Electron-positron pairs reaccelerated at the shock can reach energies of about 10 TeV, which makes this new population a potential source of GeV-TeV cosmic ray positrons. We present an analytical model for the fluxes and spectra of positrons from intrabinary shocks of CBMSPs. We find that the minimum energy $E_{\min}$ of the pairs that enter the shock is critical to quantify the energy spectrum with which positrons are injected into the interstellar medium. We measure for the first time the Galactic scale height of CBMSPs, $z_e=0.4\pm0.1$ kpc, after correcting for an observational bias against finding them close to the Galactic plane. From this, we estimate a local density of 5-9 kpc$^{-3}$ and an extrapolated total of 2-7 thousand CBMSPs in the Galaxy. We then propagate the pairs in the isotropic diffusion approximation and find that the positron flux from the total population is about two times higher than that from the 52 currently known systems. For $E_{\min}$ between 1 and 50 GeV, our model predicts only a minor contribution from CBMSPs to the diffuse positron flux at 100 GeV observed at Earth. We also quantify the effects of anisotropic transport due to the ordered Galactic magnetic field, which can change the diffuse flux from nearby sources drastically. Finally, we find that a single "hidden" CBMSP close to the Galactic plane can yield a positron flux comparable to the AMS-02 measurements at 600 GeV if its line-of-sight to Earth is along the ordered Galactic field lines, while its combined electron and positron flux at higher energies would be close to the measurements of CALET, DAMPE and Fermi-LAT., Matches version published in JCAP, after minor corrections. Using the state-of-the-art SKA precursor, the MeerKAT radio telescope, we explore the limits to precision pulsar timing of millisecond pulsars achievable due to pulse stochasticity (jitter). We report new jitter measurements in 15 of the 29 pulsars in our sample and find that the levels of jitter can vary dramatically between them. For some, like the 2.2~ms pulsar PSR J2241--5236, we measure an implied jitter of just $\sim$ 4~ns/hr, while others like the 3.9~ms PSR J0636--3044 are limited to $\sim$ 100 ns/hr. While it is well known that jitter plays a central role to limiting the precision measurements of arrival times for high signal-to-noise ratio observations, its role in the measurement of dispersion measure (DM) has not been reported, particularly in broad-band observations. Using the exceptional sensitivity of MeerKAT, we explored this on the bright millisecond pulsar PSR J0437--4715 by exploring the DM of literally every pulse. We found that the derived single pulse DMs vary by typically 0.0085 cm$^{-3}$ pc from the mean, and that the best DM estimate is limited by the differential pulse jitter across the band. We postulate that all millisecond pulsars will have their own limit on DM precision which can only be overcome with longer integrations. Using high-time resolution filterbank data of 9 $\mu$s, we also present a statistical analysis of single pulse phenomenology. Finally, we discuss optimization strategies for the MeerKAT pulsar timing program and its role in the context of the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA)., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) are massive star explosions too luminous to be powered by traditional energy sources, such as radioactive 56Ni. These transients may instead be powered by a central engine, such as a millisecond pulsar or magnetar, whose relativistic wind inflates a nebula of high energy particles and radiation behind the expanding ejecta. We present 3D Monte Carlo radiative transfer calculations which follow the production and thermalization of high energy radiation from the nebula into optical radiation and, conversely, determine the gamma-ray emission that escapes the ejecta without thermalizing. We track the evolution of photons and matter in a coupled two-zone ("wind/nebula" and "ejecta") model, accounting for the range of radiative processes. We identify a novel mechanism by which gamma-gamma pair creation in the upstream pulsar wind regulates the mean energy of particles entering the nebula over the first several years after the explosion, rendering our results on this timescale insensitive to the (uncertain) intrinsic wind pair multiplicity. To explain the observed late-time steepening of SLSNe optical light curves as being the result of gamma-ray leakage, the nebular magnetization must be very low, epsB ~ 1 yr, inconsistent with observations. For magnetars to remain viable contenders for powering SLSNe, we conclude that either magnetic dissipation in the wind/nebula is extremely efficient, or that the spin-down luminosity decays significantly faster than the canonical dipole rate ~1/t^2 in a way that coincidentally mimicks gamma-ray escape., Comment: 25 pages plus appendices, 13 figures, submitted to ApJ

Recent observations of gamma-rays with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in the direction of the inner Galaxy revealed a mysterious GeV excess. Its intensity is significantly above predictions of the standard model of cosmic rays (CRs) generation and propagation with a peak in the spectrum around a few GeV. Popular interpretations of this excess are due to either spherically distributed annihilating dark matter (DM) or abnormal population of millisecond pulsars. We suggested an alternative explanation of the excess through the CR interactions with molecular clouds in the Galactic Center (GC) region. We assumed that the excess could be imitated by the emission of molecular clouds with depleted density of CRs with energies below ~ 10 GeV inside. A novelty of our work is in detailed elaboration of the depletion mechanism of CRs with the mentioned energies through the "barrier" near the cloud edge formed by the self-excited MHD turbulence. Such depletion of CRs inside the clouds may be a reason of deficit of gamma rays from the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) at energies below few GeV. This in turn changes the ratio between various emission components at those energies, and may potentially absorb the GeV excess by simple renormalization of key components., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure. We report on Bayesian estimation of the radius, mass, and hot surface regions of the massive millisecond pulsar PSR J0740$+$6620, conditional on pulse-profile modeling of Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer X-ray Timing Instrument (NICER XTI) event data. We condition on informative pulsar mass, distance, and orbital inclination priors derived from the joint NANOGrav and CHIME/Pulsar wideband radio timing measurements of arXiv:2104.00880. We use XMM European Photon Imaging Camera spectroscopic event data to inform our X-ray likelihood function. The prior support of the pulsar radius is truncated at 16 km to ensure coverage of current dense matter models. We assume conservative priors on instrument calibration uncertainty. We constrain the equatorial radius and mass of PSR J0740$+$6620 to be $12.39_{-0.98}^{+1.30}$ km and $2.072_{-0.066}^{+0.067}$ M$_{\odot}$ respectively, each reported as the posterior credible interval bounded by the 16% and 84% quantiles, conditional on surface hot regions that are non-overlapping spherical caps of fully-ionized hydrogen atmosphere with uniform effective temperature; a posteriori, the temperature is $\log_{10}(T$ [K]$)=5.99_{-0.06}^{+0.05}$ for each hot region. All software for the X-ray modeling framework is open-source and all data, model, and sample information is publicly available, including analysis notebooks and model modules in the Python language. We have discovered a new candidate redback millisecond pulsar binary near the center of the error ellipse of the bright unassociated Fermi-LAT $\gamma$-ray source 4FGL J0940.3-7610. The candidate counterpart is a variable optical source that also shows faint X-ray emission. Optical photometric and spectroscopic monitoring with the SOAR telescope indicates the companion is a low-mass star in a 6.5-hr orbit around an invisible primary, showing both ellipsoidal variations and irradiation and consistent with the properties of known redback millisecond pulsar binaries. Given the orbital parameters, preliminary modeling of the optical light curves suggests an edge-on inclination and a low-mass ($\sim 1.2$ - $1.4\,M_{\odot}$) neutron star, along with a secondary mass somewhat more massive than typical $\gtrsim 0.4\,M_{\odot}$. This combination of inclination and secondary properties could make radio eclipses more likely for this system, explaining its previous non-discovery in radio pulsation searches. Hence 4FGL J0940.3-7610 may be a strong candidate for a focused search for $\gamma$-ray pulsations to enable the future detection of a millisecond pulsar., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; Accepted to ApJ

We report the detection of X-ray pulsations from the rotation-powered millisecond-period pulsars PSR J0740+6620 and PSR J1614-2230, two of the most massive neutron stars known, using observations with the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). We also analyze X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton) data for both pulsars to obtain their time-averaged fluxes and study their respective X-ray fields. PSR J0740+6620 exhibits a broad double-peaked profile with a separation of ~0.4 in phase. PSR J1614-2230, on the other hand, has a broad single-peak profile. The broad modulations with soft X-ray spectra of both pulsars are indicative of thermal radiation from one or more small regions of the stellar surface. We show the NICER detections of X-ray pulsations for both pulsars and also discuss the phase relationship to their radio pulsations. It is an open challenge to estimate systematically the physical parameters of neutron star interiors from pulsar timing data while separating spin wandering intrinsic to the pulsar (achromatic timing noise) from measurement noise and chromatic timing noise (due to propagation effects). In this paper we formulate the classic two-component, crust-superfluid model of neutron star interiors as a noise-driven, linear dynamical system and use a state-space-based expectation-maximization method to estimate the system parameters using gravitational-wave and electromagnetic timing data. Monte Carlo simulations show that we can accurately estimate all six parameters of the two-component model provided that electromagnetic measurements of the crust angular velocity, and gravitational-wave measurements of the core angular velocity, are both available. When only electromagnetic data are available we can recover the overall relaxation time-scale, the ensemble-averaged spin-down rate, and the strength of the white-noise torque on the crust.
