We present linear polarimetry for seven hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I). For SN 2017gci, for which we present two epochs of spectropolarimetry at +3 d and +29 d post-peak in rest frame, accompanied by four epochs of imaging polarimetry up to +108 d. The spectropolarimetry at +3 d shows increasing polarisation degree P towards the redder wavelengths and exhibits signs of axial symmetry, but at +29 d P=0 throughout the spectrum implying that the photosphere of SN 2017gci evolved from a slightly aspherical configuration to a more spherical one in the first month post-peak. However, an increase of P to 0.5% at +55 d accompanied by a different orientation of the axial symmetry compared to +3 d implies the presence of additional sources of polarisation at this phase. The increase in polarisation is possibly caused by interaction with circumstellar matter as already suggested by a knee in the light curve and a possible detection of broad Ha emission. We also analysed the sample of all 16 SLSNe-I with polarimetry to date. The data taken during the early spectroscopic phase show consistently low P indicating spherical photospheres. No clear relation between the polarimetry and spectral phase was seen when the spectra resemble Type Ic SNe during the photospheric and nebular phases. The light curve decline rate also shows no clear relation with the polarisation properties. While only slow-evolving SLSNe-I have shown non-zero P, the fast-evolving ones have not been observed at sufficiently late times to conclude that none of them exhibit changing P. However, the four SLSNe-I with increasing polarisation degree also have irregular light curve declines. For up to half of them, the photometric, spectroscopic and polarimetric properties are affected by CSM interaction. A major scientific goal of JWST is to probe the epoch of re-ionization of the Universe at z above 6, and up to 20 and beyond. At these redshifts, galaxies are just beginning to form and the observable objects are early black holes, supernovae, and cosmic infrared background. The JWST has the necessary sensitivity to observe these targets individually, but a public deep and wide science enabling survey in the wavelength range from 2-5 $\mu$m is needed to discover these black holes and supernovae and to cover the area large enough for cosmic infrared background to be reliably studied. This enabling survey will also discover a large number of other transients and enable sciences such as supernova cosmology up to z $\sim$ 5, star formation history at high redshift through supernova explosions, faint stellar objects in the Milky Way, and galaxy evolution up to z approaching 10. JWST was conceived and built to answer one of the most fundamental questions that humans can address empirically: "How did the Universe make its first stars?". Our First Lights At REionization (FLARE) project transforms the quest for the epoch of reionization from the static to the time domain. It targets the complementary question: "What happened to those first stars?". It will be answered by observations of the most luminous events: supernovae and accretion on to black holes formed by direct collapse from the primordial gas clouds. These transients provide direct constraints on star-formation rates (SFRs) and the truly initial Initial Mass Function (IMF), and they may identify possible stellar seeds of supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Furthermore, our knowledge of the physics of these events at ultra-low metallicity will be much expanded. JWST's unique capabilities will detect these most luminous and earliest cosmic messengers easily in fairly shallow observations. However, these events are very rare at the dawn of cosmic structure formation and so require large area coverage. Time domain astronomy can be advanced to an unprecedented depth by means of a shallow field of JWST reaching 27 mag AB in 2 and 4.4 microns over a field as large as 0.1 square degree visited multiple times each year. Such a survey may set strong constraints or detect massive Pop III SNe at redshifts beyond 10, pinpointing the redshift of the first stars, or at least their death. Based on our current knowledge of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe), such a survey will find one or more SLSNe at redshifts above 6 in five years and possibly several direct collapse black holes. Although JWST is not designed as a wide field survey telescope, we show that such a wide field survey is possible with JWST and is critical in addressing several of its key scientific goals.

Polarimetric studies of light transmitted through interstellar clouds may give constraints on the properties of the interstellar dust grains. Traditionally, broadband linear polarisation (BBLP) measurements have been considered an important diagnostic tool for the study of the interstellar dust, while comparatively less attention has been paid to spectropolarimetric measurements. However, spectropolarimetry may offer stronger constraints than BBLP, for example by revealing narrowband features, and by allowing us to distinguish the contribution of dust from the contribution of interstellar gas. Therefore, we have decided to carry out a Large Interstellar Polarisation Survey (LIPS) using spectropolarimetric facilities in both hemispheres. Here we present the results obtained in the Southern Hemisphere with the FORS2 instrument of the ESO Very Large Telescope. Our spectra cover the wavelength range 380--950\,nm at a spectral resolving power of about 880. We have produced a publicly available catalogue of 127 linear polarisation spectra of 101 targets. We also provide the Serkowski-curve parameters, as well as the wavelength gradient of the polarisation position angle for the interstellar polarisation along 76 different lines of sight. In agreement with previous literature, we found that the best-fit parameters of the Serkowski-curve are not independent of each other. Aims: Recurrent nova systems like RS Oph have been proposed as a possible channel to Type Ia Supernova explosions, based on the high mass of the accreting white dwarf. Additional support to this hypothesis has been recently provided by the detection of circumstellar material around SN2006X and SN2007le, showing a structure compatible with that expected for recurrent nova outbursts.In this paper we investigate the circumstellar environment of RS Oph and its structure, with the aim of establishing a firmer and independent link between this class of objects and Type Ia SN progenitors. Methods: We study the time evolution of CaII, NaI and KI absorption features in RS Oph, before, during, and after the last outburst, using multi-epoch, high-resolution spectroscopy, and applying the same method adopted for SN2006X and SN2007le. Results: A number of components, blue-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity of RS Oph, are detected. In particular, one feature strongly weakens in the first two weeks after the outburst, simultaneously with the disappearance of very narrow P-Cyg profiles overimposed on the much wider nova emission lines of H, He, FeII and other elements. Conclusions: We interpret these facts as the signature of density enhancements in the circumstellar material, suggesting that the recurrent eruptions might indeed create complex structures within the material lost by the donor star. This establishes a strong link between RS Oph and the progenitor system of the Type Ia SN2006X, for which similar features have been detected., 8 pages, 10 figures. We present comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic observations of the faint transient SN 2008S discovered in NGC 6946. SN 2008S exhibited slow photometric evolution and almost no spectral variability during the first nine months, implying a high density CS medium. The light curve is similar in shape to that of SN 1998S and SN 1979C, although significantly fainter at maximum light. Our quasi-bolometric lightcurve extends to 300 days and shows a tail phase decay rate consistent with that of ^{56}Co. We propose that this is evidence for an explosion and formation of ^{56}Ni (0.0015 +/- 0.0004 M_Sun). The large MIR flux detected shortly after explosion can be explained by a light echo from pre-exisiting dust. The late NIR flux excess is plausibly due to a combination of warm newly-formed ejecta dust together with shock-heated dust in the CS environment. We reassess the progenitor object detected previously in Spitzer archive images, supplementing this discussion with a model of the MIR spectral energy distribution. This supports the idea of a dusty, optically thick shell around SN 2008S with an inner radius of nearly 90AU and outer radius of 450AU, and an inferred heating source of 3000 K and luminosity of L ~ 10^{4.6} L_Sun. The combination of our monitoring data and the evidence from the progenitor analysis leads us to support the scenario of a weak electron capture supernova explosion in a super-AGB progenitor star (of initial mass 6-8 M_sun) embedded within a thick CS gaseous envelope. We suggest that all of main properties of the electron capture SN phenomenon are observed in SN 2008S and future observations may allow a definitive answer., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS (2009 May 7)

Spectrophotometry of SN 1996al carried out throughout 15 years is presented. The early photometry suggests that SN 1996al is a Linear type-II supernova, with an absolute peak of Mv ~ -18.2 mag. Early spectra present broad, asymmetric Balmer emissions, with super-imposed narrow lines with P-Cygni profile, and He I features with asymmetric, broad emission components. The analysis of the line profiles shows that the H and He broad components form in the same region of the ejecta. By day +142, the Halpha profile dramatically changes: the narrow P-Cygni profile disappears, and the Halpha is fitted by three emission components, that will be detected over the remaining 15 yrs of the SN monitoring campaign. Instead, the He I emissions become progressively narrower and symmetric. A sudden increase in flux of all He I lines is observed between 300 and 600 days. Models show that the supernova luminosity is sustained by the interaction of low mass (~1.15 Msun) ejecta, expelled in a low kinetic energy (~ 1.6 x 10^50 erg) explosion, with highly asymmetric circumstellar medium. The detection of Halpha emission in pre-explosion archive images suggests that the progenitor was most likely a massive star (~25 Msun ZAMS) that had lost a large fraction of its hydrogen envelope before explosion, and was hence embedded in a H-rich cocoon. The low-mass ejecta and modest kinetic energy of the explosion are explained with massive fallback of material into the compact remnant, a 7-8 Msun black hole., Comment: 27 pages, 23 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Extensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the type IIb supernova 2008ax are presented, covering the first year after the explosion. The light curve is mostly similar in shape to that of the prototypical type IIb SN 1993J, but shows a slightly faster decline rate at late phases and lacks the prominent narrow early-time peak of SN 1993J. From the bolometric light curve and ejecta expansion velocities, we estimate that about 0.07-0.15 solar masses of 56Ni were produced during the explosion and that the total ejecta mass was between 2 and 5 solar masses, with a kinetic energy of at least 10^51 erg. The spectral evolution of SN 2008ax is similar to that of the type Ib SN 2007Y, exhibiting high-velocity Ca II features at early phases and signs of ejecta-wind interaction from H-alpha observations at late times. NIR spectra show strong He I lines similar to the type Ib SN 1999ex, and a large number of emission features at late times. Particularly interesting are the strong, double-peaked He I lines in late NIR spectra, which - together with double-peaked [O I] emission in late optical spectra - provide clues for asymmetry and large-scale Ni mixing in the ejecta., 19 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Extensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the type Ib supernova 1999dn are presented, covering the first year after explosion. These new data turn this object, already considered a prototypical SNIb, into one of the best observed objects of its class. The light curve of SN 1999dn is mostly similar in shape to that of other SNeIb but with a moderately faint peak M_V=-17.2 mag). From the bolometric light curve and ejecta expansion velocities, we estimate that about 0.11 Msun of 56Ni were produced during the explosion and that the total ejecta mass was 4-6 Msun with a kinetic energy of at least 5x10^{51} erg. The spectra of SN 1999dn at various epochs are similar to those of other Stripped Envelope (SE) SNe showing clear presence of H at early epochs. The high explosion energy and ejected mass, along with the small flux ratio [CaII]/[OI] measured in the nebular spectrum, together with the lack of signatures of dust formation and the relatively high-metallicity environment point toward a single massive progenitor (M_ZAMS>=23-25 Msun) for SN 1999dn., 15 pages, 11 figures. Using a parametric approach, we determine the configuration of super-AGB stars at the explosion as a function of the initial mass and metallicity, in order to verify if the EC-SN scenario involving a super-AGB star is compatible with the observations regarding SN2008ha and SN2008S. The results show that both the SNe can be explained in terms of EC-SNe from super-AGB progenitors having a different configuration at the collapse. The impact of these results on the interpretation of other sub-luminous SNe is also discussed., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

As part of the European Supernova Collaboration we obtained extensive photometry and spectroscopy of the type Ia SN 2002dj covering epochs from 11 days before to nearly two years after maximum. Detailed optical and near-infrared observations show that this object belongs to the class of the high-velocity gradient events as indicated by Si, S and Ca lines. The light curve shape and velocity evolution of SN 2002dj appear to be nearly identical to SN 2002bo. The only significant difference is observed in the optical to near-IR colours and a reduced spectral emission beyond 6500 A. For high-velocity gradient Type Ia supernovae, we tentatively identify a faster rise to maximum, a more pronounced inflection in the V and R light curves after maximum and a brighter, slower declining late-time B light curve as common photometric properties of this class of objects. They also seem to be characterized by a different colour and colour evolution with respect to ``normal'' SNe Ia. The usual light curve shape parameters do not distinguish these events. Stronger, more blueshifted absorption features of intermediate-mass elements and lower temperatures are the most prominent spectroscopic features of Type Ia supernovae displaying high velocity gradients. It appears that these events burn more intermediate-mass elements in the outer layers. (Original) Recent high-resolution spectra of the Type Ia SN 2006X have revealed the presence of time-variable and blueshifted Na I D features, interpreted by Patat et al. as originating in circumstellar material within the progenitor system. The variation seen in SN 2006X induces relatively large changes in the total Na I D equivalent width ($\Delta\rm{EW}\approx 0.5 \unicode{x212B}$ in just over two weeks), that would be detectable at lower resolutions. We have used a large data set comprising 2400 low-resolution spectra of 450 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) obtained by the CfA Supernova Program to search for variable Na I D features. Out of the 31 SNe Ia (including SN 2006X) in which we could have detected similar EW variations, only one other (SN 1999cl) shows variable Na I D features, with an even larger change over a similar ~10-day timescale ($\Delta\rm{EW} = 1.66 \pm 0.21 \unicode{x212B}$). Interestingly, both SN 1999cl and SN 2006X are the two most highly-reddened objects in our sample, raising the possibility that the variability is connected to dusty environments. (Erratum) The large variation in the Na I D equivalent width observed in SN 1999cl results in fact from a measurement error. Our new measurements show that the EW variation is significantly lower, at $0.43 \pm 0.14 \unicode{x212B}$. While the EW variation remains statistically significant (3.1$\sigma$ different from zero), it is now below the detection threshold of 0.5 $\unicode{x212B}$ derived from the Monte Carlo simulations published in the original paper. As a result, SN 1999cl should no longer be considered as an object displaying variable Na I D lines in our study. The fraction of SNe Ia in our sample displaying Na I D lines thus goes from $\sim$6% (2/31) in the original study to $\sim$3% (1/31) in the revised analysis, SN 2006X being the only SN Ia in our sample with variable Na I D lines., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures (original paper); 6 pages, 6 figures (Erratum). The results of a world-wide coordinated observational campaign on the broad-lined Type Ic SN 2003jd are presented. In total, 74 photometric data points and 26 spectra were collected using 11 different telescopes. SN 2003jd is one of the most luminous SN Ic ever observed. A comparison with other Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic) confirms that SN 2003jd represents an intermediate case between broad-line events (2002ap, 2006aj), and highly energetic SNe (1997ef, 1998bw, 2003dh, 2003lw), with an ejected mass of M_{ej} = 3.0 +/- 1 Mo and a kinetic energy of E_{k}(tot) = 7_{-2}^{+3} 10^{51} erg. SN 2003jd is similar to SN 1998bw in terms of overall luminosity, but it is closer to SNe 2006aj and 2002ap in terms of light-curve shape and spectral evolution. The comparison with other SNe Ic, suggests that the V-band light curves of SNe Ic can be partially homogenized by introducing a time stretch factor. Finally, due to the similarity of SN 2003jd to the SN 2006aj/XRF 060218 event, we discuss the possible connection of SN 2003jd with a GRB., 19 pages, 19 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of the Type Ia SN 2003cg, which exploded in the nearby galaxy NGC 3169. The observations cover a period between -8.5 and +414 days post-maximum. SN 2003cg is a normal but highly-reddened Type Ia event. Its B magnitude at maximum B_max = 15.94+/-0.04 and Delta m_15(B)_obs = 1.12+/-0.04 (Delta m_15(B)_intrinsic = 1.25+/-0.05). Allowing R_v to become a free parameter within the Cardelli et al. (1989) extinction law, simultaneous matches to a range of colour curves of normal SNe Ia yielded E(B-V) = 1.33+/-0.11, and R_v = 1.80+/-0.19. While the value obtained for R_v is small, such values have been invoked in the past, and may imply a grain size which is small compared with the average value for the local ISM., 28 pages, 21 figures. In this paper we present and discuss the effects of scattered light echoes (LE) on the luminosity and spectral appearance of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe). After introducing the basic concepts of LE spectral synthesis, by means of LE models and real observations we investigate the deviations from pure SN spectra, light and colour curves, the signatures that witness the presence of a LE and the possible inferences on the extinction law. The effects on the photometric parameters and spectral features are also discussed. In particular, for the case of circumstellar dust, LEs are found to introduce an apparent relation between the post-maximum decline rate and the absolute luminosity which is most likely going to affect the well known Pskowski-Phillips relation., 15 pages, 14 figures, submitted to MNRAS. Evidence of high-velocity features such as those seen in the near-maximum spectra of some Type Ia Supernovae (eg SN 2000cx) has been searched for in the available SNIa spectra observed earlier than one week before B maximum. Recent observational efforts have doubled the number of SNeIa with very early spectra. Remarkably, all SNeIa with early data (7 in our RTN sample and 10 from other programmes) show signs of such features, to a greater or lesser degree, in CaII IR, and some also in SiII 6255A line. High-velocity features may be interpreted as abundance or density enhancements. Abundance enhancements would imply an outer region dominated by Si and Ca. Density enhancements may result from the sweeping up of circumstellar material by the highest velocity SN ejecta. In this scenario, the high incidence of HVFs suggests that a thick disc and/or a high-density companion wind surrounds the exploding white dwarf, as may be the case in Single Degenerate systems. Large-scale angular fluctuations in the radial density and abundance distribution may also be responsible: this could originate in the explosion, and would suggest a deflagration as the more likely explosion mechanism. CSM-interaction and surface fluctuations may coexist, possibly leaving different signatures on the spectrum. We report the first result of a supernova search program designed to measure the evolution of the supernova rate with redshift. To make the comparison with local rates more significant we copied, as much as possible, the same computation recepies as for the measurements of local rates. Moreover, we exploited the multicolor images and the photometric redshift technique to characterize the galaxy sample and accurately estimate the detection efficiency. Combining our data with the recently published meaurements of the SN Ia rate at different redshifts, we derived the first, direct measurement of the core collapse supernova rate at z = 0.26 as r_cc = 1.45^{+0.55}{-0.45} h^2 SNu [h=H_0/75]. This is a factor three {+/- 50%)} larger than the local estimate. The increase for a look back time of "only" 2.8 Gyr is more rapid than predicted by most of the published models of the SN rate evolution. Core-collapse SN rates measure the death rate of massive star and, because of the short time scale of evolution, can be translated in a measurement of the ongoing SFR. Assuming a Salpeter IMF and the standard scenario for core-collapse progenitors we derived to an estimate of the star formation rate at redshift 3.1^{+1.1}{-1.0} 10^-2 h^3 M_sun yr^-1 Mpc^{-3} which compare very well with a recent estimate based on the measurement of the Halpha luminosity density at the same redshift., Comment: Revised following referee's comments. Detailed optical and near-IR observations of SN 1999E have confirmed early suggestions that this supernova was indeed a twin of the peculiar type II SN 1997cy: it was exceptionally luminous and had evolved slowly, and the line profiles had narrow peaks and broad wings, indicating interaction with the circumstellar material. Nevertheless, the most intriguing characteristic was that, in analogy to SN 1997cy, it exploded at a position consistent in time and location with a BATSE event (GRB980910). The "a posteriori" probability that the only two SNe with such an optical appearance are associated with two different BATSE GRB is only 0.2%. This raises the possibility that some GRB are associated with H--rich SNe., accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the reduction and archiving tools developed for our search for supernovae at intermediate redshifts at ESO as well as the efficiency tests performed. The data reduction recipes developed for the SN candidates selection are described. All the variable sources detected are stored using a MySQL database which enables the identification of previously detected variable sources during past observational runs. Finally, experiments performed with artificial stars have shown that seeing plays a crucial role for the limiting magnitude of detection. We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the type IIn SN 1995G in NGC 1643, on the basis of 4 years of optical and infrared observations. This supernova shows very flat optical light curves similar to SN 1988Z, with a slow decline rate at all times. The spectra are characterized by strong Balmer lines with multiple components in emission and with a P-Cygni absorption component blueshifted by only 700 km/s. This feature indicates the presence of a slowly expanding shell above the SN ejecta as in the case of SNe 1994aj and 1996L. As in other SNe IIn the slow luminosity decline cannot be explained only with a radioactive energy input and an additional source of energy is required, most likely that produced by the interaction between supernova ejecta and a pre--existent circumstellar medium. It was estimated that the shell material has a density n(H) >> 10^8 cm^-3, consistent with the absence of forbidden lines in the spectra. About 2 years after the burst the low velocity shell is largely overtaken by the SN ejecta and the luminosity drops at a faster rate., 14 pages, including 11 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

About 500d after explosion the light curve of the Type Ia SN1998bu suddenly flattened and at the same time the spectrum changed from the typical nebular emission to a blue continuum with broad absorption and emission features reminiscent of the SN spectrum at early phases. We show that in analogy to SN1991Tbu (Schmidt et al. 1994), this can be explained by the emergence of a light echo from a foreground dust cloud. Based on a simple model we argue that the amount of dust required can consistently explain the extinction which has been estimated by completely independent methods. Because of the similar echo luminosity but much higher optical depth of the dust in SN1998bu compared with SN1991T, we expect that the echo ring size of SN1998bu grows faster than in SN1991T. Aspherical explosion models for the hypernova (hyper-energetic supernova) SN 1998bw are presented. Nucleosynthesis in aspherical explosions is examined with a two-dimensional hydrodynamical code and a detailed nuclear reaction network. Aspherical explosions lead to a strong $\alpha$-rich freezeout, thus enhancing the abundance ratios [$^{44}$Ca, $^{48}$Ti, and $^{64}$Zn / Fe] in the ejecta. The nebular line profiles of the Fe-dominated blend near 5200 \AA and of [\OI] 6300,6363 \AA are calculated and compared with the observed late time spectra of SN 1998bw. Compared with the spherical model, the unusual features of the observed nebular spectra can be better explained if SN 1998bw is a strongly aspherical explosion with a kinetic energy of $\sim 10^{52}$ ergs viewed from near the jet direction., Comment: 14 pages, including 7 eps figures. We discuss the properties of the hyper-energetic Type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic) 1998bw and 1997ef and Type IIn supernova (SN IIn) 1997cy. SNe Ic 1998bw and 1997ef are characterized by their large luminosity and the very broad spectral features. Their observed properties can be explained if they are very energetic SN explosions with the kinetic energy of $E_{\rm K} \gsim 1\times10^{52}$ erg, originating probably from the core collapse of the bare C+O cores of massive stars ($\sim 30-40$M$_\odot$). At late times, both the light curves and the spectra suggest that the explosions may have been asymmetric; this may help us understand the claimed connection with GRB's. The Type IIn SN 1997cy is even more luminous than SN 1998bw and the light curve declines more slowly than $^{56}$Co decay. We model such a light curve with circumstellar interaction, which requires the explosion energy of $\sim 5 \times 10^{52}$ erg. Because these kinetic energies of explosion are much larger than in normal core-collapse SNe, we call objects like these SNe "hypernovae". We present a new set of spectroscopic and photometric data extending the observations of SN 1997D to over 400 days after the explosion. These observations confirm the peculiar properties of SN 1997D, such as the very low abundance of 56Co (0.002 Msolar) and the low expansion velocity of the ejecta (~1000 km/s). We discuss the implications of these observations for the character of the progenitor and the nature of the remnant showing that a Crab-like pulsar or an accreting neutron star formed in the explosion of a low mass progenitor should already have produced a detectable luminosity at this epoch, in contrast with photometric data. On the other hand, the explosion of a high mass progenitor with the formation of a black hole is consistent with the available observations. The consequences of this conclusion regarding the nature of the explosion and the prospects of directly identifying the black hole are also addressed., 9 pages, 5 figures. Direct I and V-band imaging of Aql X-1 in quiescence and during outburst maximum shows that the true optical counterpart is the interloper located 0.48" West of the previously known star. We find for the new counterpart V = 21.6 and V-I = 2.2 in quiescence, when its contribution to the total light was 12% in V and 22% in I. Analysis of this photometry and of low-resolution spectra of the sum of both stars, also taken during quiescence, shows that the likely spectral types for the previously known star and the optical counterpart are late G and late K, respectively, reddened by E(B-V) = 0.5 $\pm$0.1., Comment: 4 pages + 4 figures, uses aa.cls, accepted by A&Ap (Letters). The discovery of the peculiar supernova (SN) 1998bw and its possible association with the gamma-ray burst (GRB) 980425$^{1,2,3}$ provide new clues to the understanding of the explosion mechanism of very massive stars and to the origin of some classes of gamma-ray bursts. Its spectra indicate that SN~1998bw is a type Ic supernova$^{3,4}$, but its peak luminosity is unusually high compared with typical type Ic supernovae$^3$. Here we report our findings that the optical spectra and the light curve of SN 1998bw can be well reproduced by an extremely energetic explosion of a massive carbon+oxygen (C+O) star. The kinetic energy is as large as $\sim 2-5 \times 10^{52}$ ergs, more than ten times the previously known energy of supernovae. For this reason, the explosion may be called a `hypernova'. Such a C+O star is the stripped core of a very massive star that has lost its H and He envelopes. The extremely large energy, suggesting the existence of a new mechanism of massive star explosion, can cause a relativistic shock that may be linked to the gamma-ray burst., Comment: to appear in Nature(accepted July 27; submitted June 11, 1998)

The absolute V light curves of 5 SNe Ia, selected to represent the known range of absolute luminosities at maximum for this class of objects, are presented. Comparison of the long term luminosity evolution shows that the differences seen at maximum persist, and actually increase with time, einforcing the notion that intrinsic differences do exist among SNe Ia. Since such differences are not accounted for in the standard progenitor scenario, it becomes important to derive constraints for the models directly from the observations. In order to investigate the influence of the two most important parameters, that is the masses of the synthesized radioactive material and of the ejecta, a simple MC light curve model was used to simulate the luminosity evolution from the explosion to very late epochs (~1000 days). It was found that the observations require a range of a factor 10 in the masses of the radioactive material synthesized in the explosion (Mni= 0.1-1.1 Msun,) and a factor 2 in the total mass of the ejecta (Mej = 0.7-1.4 Msun). Differences of a factor 2 in Mni seem to be present even among `normal' SNe Ia. Some evidence was also found that the deposition of the positrons from Co decay varies from object to object, and with time. Following recent claims regarding possible errors in the photometry of SNe carried out at Asiago observatory during the 70's, which produced very blue $(B-V)$ color at maximum for some objects, we present the result of new CCD photometry of the sequences around 16 type Ia supernovae. Except for a few cases, e.g. SN1970J and SN1972J for which a large zero point error has been found, the new data show that the old Asiago observations have been carried out properly and that their accuracy was comparable to that expected for a photometry based on photographic transfers. This result is also substantiated by comparison with the re-calibration of some Asiago sequences made photo-electrically by Tsvetkov. New light curves of the SNe have been determined and B magnitudes and (B-V) colors at light peak derived. With the new data the color distribution of the SNe studied here becomes narrower and moves to the red by only 0.06 mag, showing no more very blue objects except for one, still uncertain, case. Observations of the recent SN 1991bg in the elliptical galaxy NGC 5490 show that this objects closely resembles, both photometrically and spectroscopically, the faint SNIa 1991bg. The two objects have similar light curves, which do not show secondary maxima in the near IR as normal type Ia supernovae. The host galaxy, NGC5490, lies in the Hubble flow. Adopting for SN1997cn a reddening E(B-V)=0, the absolute magnitude is faint: MV = -17.98 using Ho=65 and MV = -17.40 using Ho=85 km/(s Mpc). The latter value is in close agreement with the absolute magnitude of SN 1991bg on the SBF--PNLF--TF distance scale. The photospheric spectra of the two SNe show the same peculiarities, the deep TiII trough between 4000 and 4500A, the strong CaII IR triplet, the narrow absorption at about 5700A and the slow expansion velocity. In analogy to SN 1991bg the observed spectrum of SN1997cn has been successfully modeled by scaling down the W7 model by a factor of 2, assuming a rise time to B maximum of 18 days, a photospheric velocity and an effective temperature low compared to normal SNIa. The influence of the distance scale adopted on the input parameters of the best fit model is also discussed. These data demonstrate that peculiar SNIa like SN 1991bg are not once--in--a--lifetime events and that deep SN searches can be contaminated by underluminous SN Ia in a fairly large volume., Comment: accepted for Astron.; J. 6 figures

We report on high resolution spectroscopy of four giant stars in the Galactic old open clusters Berkeley~29 and Saurer~1 obtained with HIRES at the Keck telescope. These two clusters possess the largest galactocentric distances insofar known for open star clusters, and therefore are crucial objects to probe the chemical pattern and evolution of the outskirts of the Galactic disk. We find that $[Fe/H]=-0.38\pm0.14$ and $[Fe/H]=-0.44\pm0.18$ for Saurer 1 and Berkeley~29, respectively. Based on these data, we first revise the fundamental parameters of the clusters, and then discuss them in the context of the Galactic disk radial abundance gradients. Both clusters seem to significantly deviate from the general trend, suggesting that the outer part of the Galactic disk underwent a completely different evolution compared to the inner disk. In particular Berkeley~29 is clearly associated with the Monoceros stream, while Saurer~1 exhibits very different properties.
