Squeezed light are optical beams with variance below the Shot Noise Level. They are a key resource for quantum technologies based on photons, they can be used to achieve better precision measurements, improve security in quantum key distribution channels and as a fundamental resource for quantum computation. To date, the majority of experiments based on squeezed light have been based on non-linear crystals and discrete optical components, as the integration of quadrature squeezed states of light in a nanofabrication-friendly material is a challenging technological task. Here we measure 0.45 dB of GHz-broad quadrature squeezing produced by a ring resonator integrated on a Silicon Nitride photonic chip that we fabricated with CMOS compatible steps. The result corrected for the off-chip losses is estimated to be 1 dB below the Shot Noise Level. We identify and verify that the current results are limited by excess noise produced in the chip, and propose ways to reduce it. Calculations suggest that an improvement in the optical properties of the chip achievable with existing technology can develop scalable quantum technologies based on light., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Solid state quantum emitters are between the most promising candidates for single photon generation in quantum technologies. However, they suffer from decoherence effects which limit their efficiency and indistinguishability. For instance, the radiation emitted in the zero phonon line (ZPL) of most color centers is on the order of a few percent (e.g. $NV^-$ centers in Diamond, $V_{Si}V_{C}$ in SiC) limiting the emission rate of single photons as well as the efficiency. At the same time, reliable interfacing with photons in an integrated manner still remains a challenge on both diamond and SiC technology. Here we develop photonic crystal cavities with Q factors in the order of 7,100 in 3C SiC. We discuss how this high confinement cavity can significantly enhance the fraction of photons emitted in the ZPL and improve their characteristics. Following the recent observation of localized phonon polaritons in user-defined silicon carbide nanoresonators, here we demonstrate strong and coherent coupling between those localized modes and propagating phonon polaritons bound to the surface of the nanoresonator’s substrate. In order to obtain phase matching, the nanoresonators have been fabricated to serve the double function of hosting the localized modes, while also acting as a grating for the propagating ones. The coherent coupling between long lived, optically accessible localized modes, and low-loss propagative ones, opens the way to the design and realization of phonon-polariton based coherent circuits.

Multi-photon quantum walks in integrated optics are an attractive controlled quantum system, that can mimic less readily accessible quantum systems and exhibit behavior that cannot in general be accurately replicated by classical light without an exponential overhead in resources. The ability to observe time evolution of such systems is important for characterising multi-particle quantum dynamics---notably this includes the effects of boundary conditions for walks in spaces of finite size. Here we demonstrate the coherent evolution of quantum walks of two indistinguishable photons using planar arrays of 21 evanescently coupled waveguides fabricated in silicon oxynitride technology. We compare three time evolutions, that follow closely a model assuming unitary evolution, corresponding to three different lengths of the array---in each case we observe quantum interference features that violate classical predictions. In contrast to classical physics, quantum mechanics divides particles into two classes-bosons and fermions-whose exchange statistics dictate the dynamics of systems at a fundamental level. In two dimensions quasi-particles known as 'anyons' exhibit fractional exchange statistics intermediate between these two classes. The ability to simulate and observe behaviour associated to fundamentally different quantum particles is important for simulating complex quantum systems. Here we use the symmetry and quantum correlations of entangled photons subjected to multiple copies of a quantum process to directly simulate quantum interference of fermions, bosons and a continuum of fractional behaviour exhibited by anyons. We observe an average similarity of 93.6\pm0.2% between an ideal model and experimental observation. The approach generalises to an arbitrary number of particles and is independent of the statistics of the particles used, indicating application with other quantum systems and large scale application., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Generating quantum entanglement is not only an important scientific endeavor, but will be essential to realizing quantum-enhanced technologies, in particular, quantum-enhanced measurements with precision beyond classical limits. We investigate the heralded generation of multiphoton entanglement for quantum metrology using a reconfigurable integrated waveguide device in which projective measurement of auxiliary photons heralds the generation of path-entangled states. We use four and six-photon inputs, to analyze the heralding process of two- and four-photon NOON states-a superposition of N photons in two paths, capable of enabling phase supersensitive measurements at the Heisenberg limit. Realistic devices will include imperfections; as part of the heralded state preparation, we demonstrate phase superresolution within our chip with a state that is more robust to photon loss.
