We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs ($R = \lambda/\Delta\lambda \sim 6500$), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph ($R \sim 20\,000$). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger. The 4MOST instrument is a multi-object spectrograph that will address Galactic and extragalactic science cases simultaneously by observing targets from a large number of different surveys within each science exposure. This parallel mode of operation and the survey nature of 4MOST require some distinct 4MOST-specific operational features within the overall operations model of ESO. The main feature is that the 4MOST Consortium will deliver, not only the instrument, but also contractual services to the user community, which is why 4MOST is also described as a facility. We have performed a new abundance analysis of Carina Red Giant (RG) stars from spectroscopic data collected with UVES (high resolution) and FLAMES/GIRAFFE (high and medium resolution) at ESO/VLT. The former sample includes 44 RGs, while the latter consists of 65 (high) and ~800 (medium resolution) RGs, covering a significant fraction of the galaxy's RG branch (RGB), and red clump stars. To improve the abundance analysis at the faint magnitude limit, the FLAMES/GIRAFFE data were divided into ten surface gravity and effective temperature bins. The spectra of the stars belonging to the same gravity/temperature bin were stacked. This approach allowed us to increase by at least a factor of five the signal-to-noise ratio in the faint limit (V>20.5mag). We took advantage of the new photometry index cU,B,I introduced by Monelli et al. (2014), as an age and probably a metallicity indicator, to split stars along the RGB. These two stellar populations display distinct [Fe/H] and [Mg/H] distributions: their mean Fe abundances are -2.15$\pm$0.06dex (sig=0.28), and -1.75$\pm$0.03dex (sig=0.21), respectively. The two iron distributions differ at the 75% level. This supports preliminary results by Lemasle et al. (2012) and by Monelli et al. (2014). Moreover, we found that the old and intermediate-age stellar populations have mean [Mg/H] abundances of -1.91$\pm$0.05dex (sig=0.22) and -1.35$\pm$0.03dex (sig=0.22); these differ at the 83% level. Carina's ��-element abundances agree, within 1sigma, with similar abundances for field Halo stars and for cluster (Galactic, Magellanic) stars. The same outcome applies to nearby dwarf spheroidals and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies, in the iron range covered by Carina stars. Finally, we found evidence of a clear correlation between Na and O abundances, thus suggesting that Carina's chemical enrichment history is quite different than in the globular clusters., 21 pages, 19 figures, 11 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Data from complex modern astronomical instruments often consist of a large number of different science and calibration files, and their reduction requires a variety of software tools. The execution chain of the tools represents a complex workflow that needs to be tuned and supervised, often by individual researchers that are not necessarily experts for any specific instrument. The efficiency of data reduction can be improved by using automatic workflows to organise data and execute the sequence of data reduction steps. To realize such efficiency gains, we designed a system that allows intuitive representation, execution and modification of the data reduction workflow, and has facilities for inspection and interaction with the data. The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has developed Reflex, an environment to automate data reduction workflows. Reflex is implemented as a package of customized components for the Kepler workflow engine. Kepler provides the graphical user interface to create an executable flowchart-like representation of the data reduction process. Key features of Reflex are a rule-based data organiser, infrastructure to re-use results, thorough book-keeping, data progeny tracking, interactive user interfaces, and a novel concept to exploit information created during data organisation for the workflow execution. Reflex includes novel concepts to increase the efficiency of astronomical data processing. While Reflex is a specific implementation of astronomical scientific workflows within the Kepler workflow engine, the overall design choices and methods can also be applied to other environments for running automated science workflows., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We introduce a new parameter {\Delta}{\xi} - the difference in magnitude between the red giant branch (RGB) bump and a point on the main sequence (MS) at the same color as the bump, the "benchmark" - to estimate the helium content in old stellar systems. Its sensitivity to helium is linear over the entire metallicity range, it is minimally affected by age, uncertainties in the photometric zero-point, reddening or the effects of evolution on the horizontal branch. The two main drawbacks are the need for precise and large photometric data sets, and a strong dependence of the {\Delta}Y/{\Delta}{\xi} slope on metallicity. To test the {\Delta}{\xi} parameter we selected 22 Galactic Globular Clusters (GGCs) with low foreground reddening, a broad range of iron abundance and precise, relatively deep, and homogeneous multi-band (B,V,I) photometry. We found that the observed {\Delta}{\xi} and those predicted from {\alpha}-enhanced models agree quite well if we assume Y=0.20. Comparison with canonical primordial helium content models (Y=0.245, {\Delta}Y/{\Delta}Z=1.4) indicates that the observed {\Delta}{\xi} values are systematically smaller than predicted. The outcome is the same if predicted parameters are based on models that take into account also CNO enhancements and becomes even larger if we consider He-enhanced models. These findings suggest that current stellar evolutionary models overestimate the luminosity of the RGB bump. We also found that including envelope overshooting can eliminate the discrepancy, as originally suggested by Alongi et al. (1993, aaps, 97, 851). The {\Delta}{\xi} parameter of GGCs, in spite of the possible limitations concerning the input physics of current evolutionary models, provides an independent detection of pre-stellar helium at least at the 5{\sigma} level.

We present new FLAMES@VLT spectroscopic observations of 30 stars in the field of the LMC stellar cluster NGC 1866. NGC 1866 is one of the few young and massive globular cluster that is close enough so that its stars can be individually studied in detail. Radial velocities have been used to separate stars belonging to the cluster and to the LMC field and the same spectra have been used to derive chemical abundances for a variety of elements, from [Fe/H] to the light (i.e. Na, O, Mg...) to the heavy ones. The average iron abundance of NGC 1866 turns out to be [Fe/H]= -0.43+-0.01 dex (with a dispersion of 0.04 dex), from the analysis of 14 cluster-member stars. Within our uncertainties, the cluster stars are homogeneous, as far as chemical composition is concerned, independent of the evolutionary status. The observed cluster stars do not show any sign of the light elements 'anti-correlation' present in all the Galactic globular clusters so far studied, and also found in the old LMC stellar clusters. A similar lack of anti-correlations has been detected in the massive intermediate-age LMC clusters, indicating a different formation/evolution scenario for the LMC massive clusters younger than ~3 Gyr with respect to the old ones. Also opposite to the Galactic globulars, the chemical composition of the older RGB field stars and of the young post-MS cluster stars show robust homogeneity suggesting a quite similar process of chemical evolution. The field and cluster abundances are in agreement with recent chemical analysis of LMC stars, which show a distinctive chemical pattern for this galaxy with respect to the Milky Way. We present new empirical estimates of the Delta V_HB_bump parameter for 15 Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) using accurate and homogeneous ground-based optical data. Together with similar evaluations available in the literature, we ended up with a sample of 62 GGCs covering a very broad range in metal content (-2.160), might be systematically smaller than predicted.

We present new deep and accurate space (Advanced Camera for Surveys -- Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 at the Hubble Space Telescope) and ground-based (Suprime-Cam at Subaru Telescope, Mega-Cam at Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope) photometric and astrometric data for the Local Group dwarf irregular IC10. We confirm the significant decrease of the young stellar population when moving from the center toward the outermost regions. We find that the tidal radius of IC10 is significantly larger than previous estimates of $r_t \lesssim$ 10\min. By using the $I$,\vmi\ Color Magnitude Diagram based on the Suprime-Cam data we detect sizable samples of red giant (RG) stars up to radial distances of 18-23$'$ from the galactic center. The ratio between observed star counts (Mega-Cam data) across the tip of the RG branch and star counts predicted by Galactic models indicate a star count excess at least at a 3$\sigma$ level up to 34-42\min\ from the center. This finding supports the hypothesis that the huge H{\size{I}} cloud covering more than one degree across the galaxy is associated with IC10 \citep{huchtmeier79,cohen79}. We also provide new estimates of the total luminosity ($L_V\sim9\times$$10^7$ $L_\odot$, $M_V$$\sim$-15.1 mag) that agrees with similar estimates available in the literature. If we restrict to the regions where rotational velocity measurements are available (r$\approx13'$), we find a mass-to-light ratio ($\sim$10 $M_\odot$ $L_\odot$) that is at least one order of magnitude larger than previous estimates. We present deep and accurate Near-Infrared (NIR) photometry of the Galactic Globular Cluster (GC) Omega Cen. Data were collected using the Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator (MAD) on VLT (ESO). The unprecedented quality of the images provided the opportunity to perform accurate photometry in the central crowded regions. We present iron abundance measurements, based on high resolution spectroscopy, and accurate distance determinations, based on near infrared photometry, for 34 Galactic Cepheids. The new data are used to constrain the Galactic iron abundance gradient in the outer disk, namely from 10 to 14 kpc. We confirm the flattening of the gradient toward the outer disk. In this region we also found an increase in the metallicity dispersion. We performed a new calibration of the Stroemgren metallicity index m1 based on the b-y color of cluster red giant stars. The current Metallicity-Index-Color relation is not linear in the color range 0.40 < b-y < 1.0, but provides iron abundances of cluster and field red giants with an accuracy of ~ 0.25 dex., 3 pages, 2 figures; to appear in Mem. We present new empirical and theoretical calibrations of two photometric metallicity indices based on Walraven photometry. The empirical calibration relies on a sample of 48 Cepheids for which iron abundances based on high resolution spectra are available in the literature. They cover a broad range in metal abundance (-0.5 < [Fe/H] < +0.5) and the intrinsic accuracy of the Metallicity Index Color (MIC) relations is better than 0.2 dex. The theoretical calibration relies on a homogeneous set of scaled-solar evolutionary tracks for intermediate-mass stars and on pulsation predictions concerning the topology of the instability strip. The metal content of the adopted evolutionary tracks ranges from Z=0.001 to Z=0.03 and the intrinsic accuracy of the MIC relations is better than 0.1 dex., 6 pages, 5 figures; to appear in Mem. Soc. ESO's two FOcal Reducer and low dispersion Spectrographs (FORS) are the primary imaging cameras for the VLT. Since they are not direct-imaging cameras, the accuracy of photometry which can routinely be obtained is limited by significant sky concentration and other effects. Photometric standard observations are routinely obtained by ESO, and nightly zero points are computed mainly for the purpose of monitoring the instrument performance. The accuracy of these zero points is about 10%. Recently, we have started a program to investigate, if and how percent-level absolute photometric accuracy with FORS can be achieved. The main results of this project are presented in this paper. We first discuss the quality of the flatfields and how it can be improved. We then use data with improved flat-fielding to investigate the usefulness of Stetson standard fields for FORS calibration and the accuracy which can be achieved. The main findings of the FORS Absolute Photometry Project program are as follows. There are significant differences between the sky flats and the true photometric response of the instrument which partially depend on the rotator angle. A second order correction to the sky flat significantly improves the relative photometry within the field. Percent level photometric accuracy can be achieved with FORS1. The advent of the new class 8 meters telescopes allows for the first time the detailed study of numerous stars of galaxies other than our own. The Large Magellanic Cloud is one of the most interesting targets due to its proximity and its relatively face-on disk, permitting to separate populations pertaining to the different structures of the galaxy. We have used FLAMES (the Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph) at the VLT-UT2 telescope to obtain spectra of a large sample of stars from the Inner Disk of the LMC, $\sim$2 kpc from the center of the galaxy. We investigate the chemical abundances of iron-peak elements, heavy and light $s$-process elements, Cu, Na, Sc and $\alpha$-elements for a sample of red giant stars. Metallicities for the sample stars range from [Fe/H] = $-$1.76 to $-$0.02. LMC inner disk stars show a definitely different chemical pattern when compared to galactic stars of the same metallicity., Comment: 54 pages, 21 figures

We have measured the elemental abundances of 68 Galactic and Magellanic Cepheids from FEROS and UVES high-resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra in order to establish the influence of the chemical composition on the properties of these stars (see Romaniello et al. 2005). Here we describe the robust analytical procedure we have developed to accurately determine them. The resulting iron abundances span a range between ~ -0.80 dex for stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud and ~ +0.20 dex for the most metal-rich ones in the Galaxy. While the average values for each galaxy are in good agreement with non-pulsating stars of similar age, Cepheids display a significant spread. We investigate the final fate of metal deficient (MD) H burning Red Giants under various assumptions about the amount of mass loss. Adopting a metallicity Z= 10^(-8), we follow the evolution of 0.8 Mo models from the Main Sequence phase till the onset of the He flash or the final cooling as a He White Dwarf, according to the amount of mass loss. We show that MD Red Giants require peculiarly large H-rich envelopes to support the H-shell burning and to allow the final ignition of He, thus favouring the occurrence of He degenerate dwarfs either as the result of single star evolution or in MD binary systems. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury Program on the Orion Nebula Cluster has used 104 orbits of HST time to image the Great Orion Nebula region with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), the Wide-Field/Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi Object Spectrograph (NICMOS) instruments in 11 filters ranging from the U-band to the H-band equivalent of HST. The program has been intended to perform the definitive study of the stellar component of the ONC at visible wavelengths, addressing key questions like the cluster IMF, age spread, mass accretion, binarity and cirumstellar disk evolution. The scanning pattern allowed to cover a contiguous field of approximately 600 square arcminutes with both ACS and WFPC2, with a typical exposure time of approximately 11 minutes per ACS filter, corresponding to a point source depth AB(F435W) = 25.8 and AB(F775W)=25.2 with 0.2 magnitudes of photometric error. We describe the observations, data reduction and data products, including images, source catalogs and tools for quick look preview. In particular, we provide ACS photometry for 3399 stars, most of them detected at multiple epochs, WFPC2 photometry for 1643 stars, 1021 of them detected in the U-band, and NICMOS JH photometry for 2116 stars. We summarize the early science results that have been presented in a number of papers. We present new estimates of the relative distance of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) by using NIR and Optical-NIR Cepheid Period Wesenheit (PW) relations. The relative distances are independent of uncertainties affecting the zero-point of the PW relations, but do depend on the adopted pivot periods. We estimated the pivot periods for fundamental (FU) and first overtone (FO) Cepheids on the basis of their period distributions. We found that log P=0.5 (FU) and log P=0.3 (FO) are solid choices, since they trace a main peak and a shoulder in LMC and SMC period distributions. By using the above pivot periods and ten PW relations, we found MC relative distances of 0.53$\pm$0.06 (FU) and 0.53$\pm$0.07 (FO) mag. Moreover, we investigated the possibility to use mixed-mode (FU/FO, FO/SO) Cepheids as distance indicators and we found that they follow quite well the PW relations defined by single mode MC Cepheids, with deviations typically smaller than 0.3{\sigma}., Comment: Proceeding of the conference: EWASS 2012 - Stellar Populations: 55 years after the Vatican conference

We present deep and accurate photometry (F435W, F625W, F658N) of the Galactic Globular Cluster Omega Cen collected with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We identified ~ 6,500 white dwarf (WD)candidates and compared their radial distribution with that of Main Sequence (MS) stars. We found a mild evidence that young WDs (0.1 < t < 0.6 Gyr) are less centrally concentrated when compared to MS stars in the magnitude range 25 < F435W < 26.5., 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Mem. We found the first direct evidence that the Cepheid class namesake, delta Cephei, is currently losing mass. These observations are based on data obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the infrared, and with the Very Large Array in the radio. We found that delta Cephei is associated with a vast circumstellar structure, reminiscent of a bow shock. This structure is created as the wind from the star interacts with the local interstellar medium. We measure an outflow velocity of ~35.5 km/s and a mass loss rate of ~1E-7 - 1E-6 Mo/yr. We present the first spectroscopic abundance determination of iron, alpha-elements (Si, Ca and Ti) and sodium for the Mira variable V1 in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 5927. We use high-resolution (R~ 28,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (~200) spectra collected with WINERED, a near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph covering simultaneously the wavelength range 0.91--1.35 micron. The effective temperature and the surface gravity at the pulsation phase of the spectroscopic observation were estimated using both optical (V) and NIR time-series photometric data. We found that the Mira is metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.55 \pm 0.15) and moderately alpha-enhanced ([alpha/Fe]=0.15 \pm 0.01, sigma=0.2). These values agree quite well with the mean cluster abundances based on high-resolution optical spectra of several cluster red giants available in the literature ([Fe/H]=-0.47 \pm 0.06, [alpha/Fe]=+0.24 \pm 0.05). We also found a Na abundance of +0.35 \pm 0.20 that is higher than the mean cluster abundance based on optical spectra (+0.18 \pm 0.13). However, the lack of similar spectra for cluster red giants and that of corrections for departures from local-thermodynamical equilibrium prevents us from establishing whether the difference is intrinsic or connected with multiple populations. These findings indicate a strong similarity between optical and NIR metallicity scales in spite of the difference in the experimental equipment, data analysis and in the adopted spectroscopic diagnostics., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, 9 pages, 3 figures

We report on high resolution spectroscopy of four giant stars in the Galactic old open clusters Berkeley~29 and Saurer~1 obtained with HIRES at the Keck telescope. These two clusters possess the largest galactocentric distances insofar known for open star clusters, and therefore are crucial objects to probe the chemical pattern and evolution of the outskirts of the Galactic disk. We find that $[Fe/H]=-0.38\pm0.14$ and $[Fe/H]=-0.44\pm0.18$ for Saurer 1 and Berkeley~29, respectively. Based on these data, we first revise the fundamental parameters of the clusters, and then discuss them in the context of the Galactic disk radial abundance gradients. Both clusters seem to significantly deviate from the general trend, suggesting that the outer part of the Galactic disk underwent a completely different evolution compared to the inner disk. In particular Berkeley~29 is clearly associated with the Monoceros stream, while Saurer~1 exhibits very different properties.
