We present fluxes and light curves for a population of asteroids at millimeter (mm) wavelengths, detected by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) over 18, 000 deg2 of the sky using data from 2017 to 2021. We utilize high cadence maps, which can be used in searching for moving objects such as asteroids and trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs), as well as for studying transients. We detect 160 asteroids with a signal-to-noise of at least 5 in at least one of the ACT observing bands, which are centered near 90, 150, and 220 GHz. For each asteroid, we compare the ACT measured flux to predicted fluxes from the Near Earth Asteroid Thermal Model (NEATM) fit to WISE data. We confirm previous results that detected a deficit of flux at millimeter wavelengths. Moreover, we report a spectral characteristic to this deficit, such that the flux is relatively lower at 150 and 220 GHz than at 90 GHz. Large-scale asymmetries (i.e. lopsidedness) are a common feature in the stellar density distribution of nearby disk galaxies both in low- and high-density environments. In this work, we characterize the present-day lopsidedness in a sample of 1435 disk-like galaxies selected from the TNG50 simulation. We find that the percentage of lopsided galaxies (10%-30%) is in good agreement with observations if we use similar radial ranges to the observations. However, the percentage (58%) significantly increases if we extend our measurement to larger radii. We find a mild or lack of correlation between lopsidedness amplitude and environment at z=0 and a strong correlation between lopsidedness and galaxy morphology regardless of the environment. Present-day galaxies with more extended disks, flatter inner galactic regions and lower central stellar mass density (i.e. late-type disk galaxies) are typically more lopsided than galaxies with smaller disks, rounder inner galactic regions and higher central stellar mass density (i.e. early-type disk galaxies). Interestingly, we find that lopsided galaxies have, on average, a very distinct star formation history within the last 10 Gyr, with respect to their symmetric counterparts. Symmetric galaxies have typically assembled at early times (~8-6 Gyr ago) with relatively short and intense bursts of central star formation, while lopsided galaxies have assembled on longer timescales and with milder initial bursts of star formation, continuing building up their mass until z=0. Overall, these results indicate that lopsidedness in present-day disk galaxies is connected to the specific evolutionary histories of the galaxies that shaped their distinct internal properties., Submitted to MNRAS, 23 pages (including the Appendix), 23 figures

We conduct a systematic search for transients in three years of data (2017-2019) from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). ACT covers 40 percent of the sky at three bands spanning from 77 GHz to 277 GHz. Analysis of 3-day mean-subtracted sky maps, which were match-filtered for point sources, yielded 29 transients detections. Eight of these transients are due to known asteroids, and three others were previously published. Four of these events occur in areas of with poor noise models and thus we cannot be confident they are real transients. We are left with 14 new transient events occurring at 11 unique locations. All of these events are associated with either rotationally variable stars or cool stars. Ten events have flat or falling spectra indicating radiation from synchrotron emission. One event has a rising spectrum indicating a different engine for the flare.

We use data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) DR4 to search for the presence of neutrino self-interaction in the cosmic microwave background. Consistent with prior works, the posterior distributions we find are bimodal, with one mode consistent with $\Lambda$CDM and one where neutrinos strongly self-interact. By combining ACT data with large-scale information from WMAP, we find that a delayed onset of neutrino free streaming caused by significantly strong neutrino self-interaction is compatible with these data at the $2-3\sigma$ level. As seen in the past, the preference shifts to $\Lambda$CDM with the inclusion of Planck data. We determine that the preference for strong neutrino self-interaction is largely driven by angular scales corresponding to $700 \lesssim \ell \lesssim 1000$ in the ACT E-mode polarization data. We use KiDS weak lensing data to measure variations in mean halo mass as a function of several key galaxy properties (namely: stellar colour, specific star formation rate, Sersic index, and effective radius) for a volume-limited sample of GAMA galaxies in a narrow stellar mass range ($M_* \sim 2$--$5 \times 10^{10}$ Msol). This mass range is particularly interesting, inasmuch as it is where bimodalities in galaxy properties are most pronounced, and near to the break in both the galaxy stellar mass function and the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR). In this narrow mass range, we find that both size and Sersic index are better predictors of halo mass than either colour or SSFR, with the data showing a slight preference for Sersic index. In other words, we find that mean halo mass is more tightly correlated with galaxy structure than either past star formation history or current star formation rate. Our results lead to an approximate lower bound on the dispersion in halo masses among $\log M_* \approx {10.5}$ galaxies: we find that the dispersion is $\gtrsim 0.3$ dex. This would imply either that offsets from the mean SHMR are closely coupled to size/structure, or that the dispersion in the SHMR is larger than past results have suggested. We assess the dark matter halo masses of luminous AGNs over the redshift range 0.2 to 1.2 using galaxy-galaxy lensing based on imaging data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). We measure the weak lensing signal of a sample of 8882 AGNs constructed using HSC and WISE photometry. The lensing detection around AGNs has a signal-to-noise ratio of 15. As expected, we find that the lensing mass profile is consistent with that of massive galaxies ($M_{*}\sim 10.8~M_\odot$). Surprisingly, the lensing signal remains unchanged when the AGN sample is split into low and high stellar mass hosts. Specifically, we find that the excess surface density (ESD) of AGNs, residing in galaxies with high stellar masses, significantly differs from that of the control sample. We further fit a halo occupation distribution model to the data to infer the posterior distribution of parameters including the average halo mass. We find that the characteristic halo mass of the full AGN population lies near the knee ($\rm log(M_h/h^{-1}M_{\odot})=12.0$) of the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR). Illustrative of the results given above, the halo masses of AGNs residing in host galaxies with high stellar masses (i.e., above the knee of the SHMR) falls below the calibrated SHMR while the halo mass of the low stellar mass sample is more consistent with the established SHMR. The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect introduces a specific distortion of the blackbody spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation when it scatters off hot gas in clusters of galaxies. The frequency dependence of the distortion is only independent of the cluster redshift when the evolution of the CMB radiation is adiabatic. Using 370 clusters within the redshift range $0.07\lesssim z\lesssim1.4$ from the largest SZ-selected cluster sample to date from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, we provide new constraints on the deviation of CMB temperature evolution from the standard model $\alpha=0.017^{+0.029}_{-0.032}$, where $T(z)=T_0(1+z)^{1-\alpha}$. This result is consistent with no deviation from the standard adiabatic model. Combining it with previous, independent datasets we obtain a joint constraint of $\alpha=-0.001\pm0.012$. Attributing deviation from adiabaticity to the decay of dark energy, this result constrains its effective equation of state $w_\mathrm{eff}=-0.998^{+0.008}_{-0.010}$.

Using a sample of 98 galaxy clusters recently imaged in the near infra-red with the ESO NTT, WIYN and WHT telescopes, supplemented with 33 clusters from the ESO archive, we measure how the stellar mass of the most massive galaxies in the universe, namely Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG), increases with time. We measure the cross-correlation of Atacama Cosmology Telescope CMB lensing convergence maps with quasar maps made from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR8 SDSS-XDQSO photometric catalog. The CMB lensing-quasar cross-power spectrum is detected for the first time at a significance of 3.8 sigma, which directly confirms that the quasar distribution traces the mass distribution at high redshifts z>1. Our detection passes a number of null tests and systematic checks. Using this cross-power spectrum, we measure the amplitude of the linear quasar bias assuming a template for its redshift dependence, and find the amplitude to be consistent with an earlier measurement from clustering; at redshift z ~ 1.4, the peak of the distribution of quasars in our maps, our measurement corresponds to a bias of b = 2.5 +/- 0.6. With the signal-to-noise ratio on CMB lensing measurements likely to improve by an order of magnitude over the next few years, our results demonstrate the potential of CMB lensing cross-correlations to probe astrophysics at high redshifts., 7 pages, 5 figures; replaced with version accepted by Phys. The Simons Observatory (SO) is a ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment sited on Cerro Toco in the Atacama Desert in Chile that promises to provide breakthrough discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, and astrophysics. Supported by the Simons Foundation, the Heising-Simons Foundation, and with contributions from collaborating institutions, SO will see first light in 2021 and start a five year survey in 2022. SO has 287 collaborators from 12 countries and 53 institutions, including 85 students and 90 postdocs. The SO experiment in its currently funded form ('SO-Nominal') consists of three 0.4 m Small Aperture Telescopes (SATs) and one 6 m Large Aperture Telescope (LAT). Optimized for minimizing systematic errors in polarization measurements at large angular scales, the SATs will perform a deep, degree-scale survey of 10% of the sky to search for the signature of primordial gravitational waves. The LAT will survey 40% of the sky with arc-minute resolution. These observations will measure (or limit) the sum of neutrino masses, search for light relics, measure the early behavior of Dark Energy, and refine our understanding of the intergalactic medium, clusters and the role of feedback in galaxy formation. With up to ten times the sensitivity and five times the angular resolution of the Planck satellite, and roughly an order of magnitude increase in mapping speed over currently operating ("Stage 3") experiments, SO will measure the CMB temperature and polarization fluctuations to exquisite precision in six frequency bands from 27 to 280 GHz.
