The article assumes that the philosophers known as “pre-Socratics” should be understood for analyzing their fragments and for a critical analysis of the testimonies about them that have come to us. The Aristotelian reading prevailed, but today we are able to understand the Ionian philosophy in its particularity, each of its philosophers and the ideas common to them. We approach these philosophers together as members of a historical tradition, as this undoubtedly seems unavoidable for their proper understanding, and we pay attention to the fundamental notions of necessity, evolution and freedom, a kind of backbone of Anaximander's thought to that of Lucretius. Especially in contrast to the idea of final cause (basilar for Aristotle, but also for Plato), we consider that the Ionians followed the opposite path to the Aristotelian and that the Epicureans are their main heirs, hence the expression “Ionian-Epicurean philosophy”, for us created to designate what we believe to have been a long and legitimate philosophical tradition. O artigo parte do princípio de que os filósofos chamados “pré-socráticos” devem ser conhecidos pela análise de seus fragmentos e por uma análise crítica dos testemunhos que sobre eles nos chegaram. A leitura aristotélica prevaleceu, porém hoje temos condições de entender a filosofia jônica em sua particularidade, cada um dos filósofos e o que é comum a eles. Abordamos esses filósofos em seu conjunto como membros de uma tradição histórica, pois isto sem dúvida nos parece incontornável para a sua adequada compreensão, e nos ativemos às noções fundamentais de necessidade, evolução e liberdade, uma espécie de espinha dorsal do pensamento de Anaximandro ao de Lucrécio. Especialmente em contraste com a ideia de finalidade (basilar para Aristóteles, mas também para Platão), consideramos que os jônicos seguiram o caminho oposto ao aristotélico e que os epicuristas são seus principais herdeiros, daí a expressão “filosofia jônico-epicurista”, por nós cunhada para se referir ao que acreditamos ter sido uma longa e legítima tradição filosófica.

Spinoza apresenta em sua Ética uma ontologia em virtude da qual o homem é apenas um modo determinado por outros modos. Por isso, nós nos deparamos com uma concepção da natureza do homem que tem sido tradicionalmente considerada determinista. Conforme denunciado por alguns autores como Jacobi ou Tschirnhaus, dessa concepção segundo a qual toda ação humana é necessária e determinada de antemão, seguiria a ausência de responsabilidade moral. Agora, longe de nos abandonar num mundo amoral, a proposta de Spinoza não só apresenta uma certa concepção de liberdade, mas também uma concepção normativa de ética. Consequentemente, este artigo mostrará o caminho seguido pelo autor da Ética para chegar à conclusão de que liberdade e necessidade são conceitos compatíveis. Isso será possível depois de abordar consecutivamente a concepção antropológica, ontológica e ética de Spinoziana. Nos encontramos, así pues, con una concepción de la naturaleza del hombre que ha sido considerada tradicionalmente como determinista. Tal y como denunciaron algunos autores como Jacobi o Tschirnhaus, de esta concepción según la cual toda acción humana es necesaria y está determinada de antemano, se seguiría la ausencia de la responsabilidad moral. Ahora bien, lejos de abandonarnos en un mundo amoral, en la propuesta de Spinoza no sólo está presente una determinada concepción de la libertad, sino también una concepción normativa de la ética. En consecuencia, en el presente trabajo se mostrará la senda seguida por el autor de la Ética para llegar a la conclusión de que libertad y necesidad son conceptos compatibles. Esto será posible tras abordar consecutivamente la concepción antropológica, ontológica y ética spinoziana. Spinoza presents in his Ethics an ontology by virtue of which man is nothing more than a mode determined by others. Therefore, we find ourselves with a conception of man’s nature that has traditionally been considered deterministic. As some authors have denounced, such as Jacobi or Tschirnhaus, this conception, according to which all human action is necessary and is determined in advance, the absence of moral responsibility would follow. However, far from abandoning us to an amoral world, in Spinoza’s proposal there is present not only a certain conception of freedom, but also a normative conception of ethics. Consequently, this paper will show the path followed by the author of the Ethics to reach the conclusion that freedom and necessity are compatible concepts. This will be possible after addressing consecutively the anthropology, ontology and ethics conception of Spinoza.

Resumo Tencionamos, nestas reflexões, analisar os conceitos spinozianos de Deus, do homem e da razão, para, a partir do caráter necessário que os permeia, interrogarmos se existiria também a possibilidade de uma liberdade humana no pensamento do autor da Ética. Se tal liberdade existe, ela estaria situada no próprio plano racional, o que, por sua vez, levantaria ingentes problemas. A mesma questão - a da possibilidade de uma liberdade, em Freud - estaria colocada na margem de ação que, até certo ponto, ele assinala ao eu, por intermédio de sua nova divisão do aparelho psíquico, em Além do princípio de prazer (1920) e O eu e o isso (1923). Avancemos desde já que, se a ênfase de Spinoza, no que diz respeito à liberdade, recai sobre a razão, em Freud o acento é colocado sobretudo na simbolização e na significação que a tensão do desejo pode acarretar. Portanto, o nosso objetivo não é o de mostrar, ou provar, qualquer vínculo de dependência de Freud vis-à-vis de Spinoza. A nossa intenção é, antes, fazer ressaltar as diferenças que os separam, no que concerne à questão da necessidade e da liberdade. Abstract This article begins with an analysis of the Spinozian concepts of God, man, and reason, as well as the necessary character that permeates them. Based on that, we will ask if there exists the possibility of human freedom in the thought of the author of Ethics. If such a freedom does really exist, it would be situated on the rational level, which would raise huge problems. The same question in Freud - that of the possibility of freedom - would be related to the action that, to a certain extent, he attributes to the ego in the context of his new division of the psychical apparatus in Beyond the Pleasure Principle (1920) and The Ego and the Id (1923). But if Spinoza’s emphasis with respect to freedom is placed upon reason, in Freud the emphasis is placed principally on the symbolization and signification that desire can bring about. Our goal is not to show that there is any dependence of Freud on Spinoza. We rather intend to underscore the differences that separate them with reference to the question of necessity and freedom.

This text aims at examining the concept of revolution present in Hannah Arendt’s book On Revolution (1963). It is purported to address more specifically the failure of the revolutionary spirit. The hypothesis presented here is the following: the understanding of the relations between necessity and freedom outlined by Arendt in On Revolution shows that the failure of the western revolutionary spirit is rooted in the fact that it favored economy and necessity on the one hand and juridical formalism on the other, but to the detriment of freedom. Arendt saw this happening both in French and American revolutions. O texto examina o conceito arendtiano de revolução presente na obra Sobre a Revolução (1963), focalizando, especialmente, a questão do malogro do espírito revolucionário. Nossa leitura guia-se pela hipótese de que a relação entre a necessidade e a liberdade atravessa a obra da autora e ilumina a compreensão arendtiana de revolução. A opção pela necessidade, pelo econômico, por um lado, e pela formalidade jurídica, por outro, em detrimento da liberdade, está na origem, segundo Hannah Arendt, do malogro do espírito revolucionário no mundo ocidental, particularmente nas suas grandes revoluções: a francesa e a americana.

Uma das principais discussões na correspondência Leibniz-Clarke tem que ver com o melhor modo de conceber a liberdade da vontade. A relação entre a vontade e os motivos é semelhante à que se verifica entre a balança e os pesos? A vontade tem a capacidade de contrariar a inclinação mais forte? A noção de motivos que inclinam sem necessitar basta para defender a liberdade? Estas e outras perguntas constituem o campo de batalha em que duas diferentes perspectivas acerca da liberdade humana e divina se enfrentam. O nosso artigo foca a posição de Leibniz a respeito deste tema, tal como se desenha nas cartas tro­cadas com Clarke. Nele, sublinhamos as preocupações fundamentais de Leibniz na tarefa de conceptualização da vontade livre, oferecemos um brevíssimo resumo da sua argumentação e partilhamos algumas dificuldades relativas à interpretação das teses apresentadas pelo filósofo alemão. One of the main arguments in the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence is about the best way of conceiving freedom of will. Is the relationship between the will and the motives equal to the one between the balance and the weights? Can the will counter its strongest inclination? Is the notion of motives that incline without necessitating enough to defend freedom? These questions, among others, compose the battlefield where two different perspectives on human and divine freedom face each other. This article focuses on Leibniz’s stance regard­ing this topic, as expressed in the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence. By underlining Leibniz’s fundamental concerns in the conceptualization of free will, and presenting a short synthesis of his argumentation, this article exposes some difficulties regarding the interpretation of this German philosopher’s thesis.

Com freqüência opõe-se a constatação crescente, norteada pelas ciências naturais, do determinismo que rege o funcionamento dos organismos vivos a um humanismo de fundamentação kantiana: está em questão a real condição da autonomia humana que repercute naquela de sua responsabilidade individual e social. Com base na filosofia espinosista, Henri Atlan endossa os postulados deterministas das investigações científicas, conciliando com eles, entretanto, a afirmação da plena liberdade e responsabilidade do ser humano. Num primeiro momento, tendo como pano de fundo estratégico distinções nas concepções de "natureza humana", revisaremos as diferentes abordagens da ética e da ciência às teses da autonomia e do determinismo. A seguir, focalizaremos a discussão do dilema por Atlan, em seu ensaio de 2002, La Science est-elle inhumaine? Essai sur la libre nécessité. Concluímos ressignificando "humanismo" nos termos das novas exigências conceituais do século 21.The growing ascertainment, guided by the natural sciences, of the determinism that rules how living organisms work is often contrasted with a humanism of Kantian foundation. At issue here is the actual condition of human autonomy, reverberating on that of human responsibility both at the social and at the individual levels. Based on Spinozist philosophy, Atlan endorses the deterministic postulates of scientific investigations, though he reconciles them to the statement of the human being’s full freedom and responsibility. Initially, with the strategic background of distinctions in conceptions of human nature, we will review the different approaches of autonomy and determinism on the part of ethics and science. We will then concentrate on the discussion of the dilemma by Atlan, in his essay of 2002, La Science est-elle Inhumaine: essai sur la libre nécessité. Our conclusion redefines the meaning of "humanism" pursuant to the new conceptual demands of the 21st century.

This paper begins by stating the personal contacts between Spinoza and Leibniz in letters XLV and XLVI, followed by Leibniz’s further comments on Spinoza’s work. By the analysis of different leibnizian texts we contrast both paradigms, namely in what concerns the concept of the possible, denied by Spinoza but absolutely necessary in Leibniz. O ensaio confronta o relacionamento entre Espinosa e Leibniz a partir de alguns textos (cartas trocadas e comentários leibnizianos à obra de Espinosa). Pela análise destes elaboramos um contraste entre os dois sistemas, nomeadamente no que concerne ao conceito de possível, negado por Espinosa e relevado por Leibniz.
