Non-point source pollution is a severe environmental problem in emerging countries (e.g., China). Many studies have examined farmers' ecological production behaviors (EPBs) concerning land protection, agricultural transformation, and environmental development. Despite a growing emphasis on shaping livelihood capitals to improve farmers' EPBs, it remains unclear how different combinations of livelihood capitals contribute to farmers' EPBs. To bridge this knowledge gap, we explore the effects of different configurations of five livelihood capitals on farmers' EPBs based on the sustainable livelihood framework. After collecting farmer survey data in Hubei province (a major grain-producing region in Central China), we evaluated the ecological production effect of different livelihood capital configurations using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). The results show that three combinations of livelihood capitals predict high EPBs of farmers. Specifically, the high adoption of EPBs is expected for farmers with a negation of natural capital but sufficient social capital (configuration 1: social capital dominant-driven configuration), good human and financial capital combined with the negation of natural and physical capital (configuration 2: human–financial capital integrated-driven configuration), and human, physical, and social capital combined with the negation of financial capital (configuration 3: human–physical–social capital combined-driven configuration). We examined how livelihood capital configurations affect ecological production by adopting a theoretical and empirical approach in sustainable land use. Consequently, tailored policy recommendations should be implemented to enhance sustainable socio-economic development in rural areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Despite the global development of social enterprises (SEs) over the past three decades, how to improve sustainability remains a challenging issue for most SEs. Although SE ecosystems have been recognized as crucial determinants of SE sustainability performance in the current literature, no empirical study has comprehensively examined the relationships among them. Additionally, prior studies have demonstrated that sustainability performance might vary among SEs of different revenue structures or across different contexts, suggesting that more attention should be devoted to the complexity of the causal mechanisms determining SE sustainability performance. To address these gaps in the current literature, this paper examines the complex, divergent, and asymmetric causal links among SE ecosystems, revenue structures, and the sustainability performance of SEs in China by conducting fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) of 274 typical cases of SEs. The results revealed alternative configurations for high and low levels of sustainability performance among SEs of different revenue structures. First, the fsQCA results indicated that SE sustainability performance was not determined by the impacts of single components of SE ecosystems but rather by the combined effects of multiple elements. Second, for SEs of divergent revenue structures, causal paths leading to high or low levels of sustainability performance showed notable discrepancies in terms of both number and composition. Specifically, commercial SEs receiving income mainly from market-based earned income were more likely to achieve higher levels of social and financial sustainability because of greater adaptability to SE ecosystems and less environmental dependence. Third, the impacts of different components of SE ecosystems on sustainable performance also varied with SE revenue structures. Three categories of components—policy environment, sociocultural setting, and industrial infrastructure—made more important contributions to SE sustainability performance in both the social and financial dimensions. This paper offers step-by-step guidance and best practices for using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA) in entrepreneurship research. We analyzed publications in which FsQCA was utilized as the primary methodological choice, focusing our scope on 10 top entrepreneurship journals. Our review reveals that inconsistencies exist regarding how to use the method, what processes to follow, and how to interpret results. Specifically, there is a need for an improved understanding regarding (a) considerations for performing direct calibration, (b) performing (necessity) analysis for both the outcome of interest and its negation, and (c) assessing the sensitivity of the resulting configurations to the selected threshold and cutoff values. To illustrate best practices, we conclude by analyzing GEM data from 43 countries to demonstrate how to best use the method, what to consider, and how the findings change if best practices are not followed. - Abstract
This study analyses the inclusion of globalisation as an innovation enabler in a national systems of innovation (NSI) framework and perceives differences between more and less competitive countries. Based on the NSI approach, we argue that globalisation should be considered in NSI frameworks. Moreover, besides revealing innovation configurations leading to higher innovation outputs, this study establishes a link between innovation configurations and country competitiveness. Analyses were performed through fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) with a sample of 127 countries. Our results indicate that the addition of globalisation does increase the strength of the relationship between the solutions obtained and innovation outputs. When comparing two different innovation outputs, paths leading to higher creative outputs were in greater numbers than those leading to higher knowledge and technology outputs, particularly when considering competitiveness levels. High competitiveness countries showed more paths leading to higher innovation outputs. This study contributes to the literature on NSI by considering globalisation as an antecedent condition for higher innovation outputs. Furthermore, the diversity of paths taken by more and less competitive countries highlights the need for the latter to diversify their national systems of innovation in order to catch-up. The traditional symmetrical methods may not be sufficient for effectively examining the asymmetries that are evident in the real‐world complex consumption context in the form of pandemic, and other technological, sociocultural, environmental, and geo‐political factors. As a result, the use of innovative and asymmetrical methods such as fuzzy‐set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA), which draws from the complexity theory could help better predict and explain consumer decisions in the age of disruptions. Through a comprehensive method‐based systematic literature review of 129 research articles published in the consumer behavior research literature, this study helps to identify the key trends, leading publication sources and contributors, and the current knowledge structure of consumer research using fsQCA. In doing so, this review also sheds light on the state of diversity within this particular area of research. The findings help identify the key future avenues for utilizing fsQCA within consumer research. This review is a useful resource for practitioners to gain a direct access to key consumer research scholars for identifying the constructs (e.g., antecedents, mediators, moderators, enablers, inhibitors) shaping consumer behaviors to inform strategic decisions. Domestic tourism is a crucial socioeconomic factor for destinations, regions, and local communities. Its peculiarity creates unique opportunities, as well as challenges and complexities, in the formulation of the tourist experience. Two studies examine the complexity of the factors involved in formulating the tourist experience in the context of domestic tourism. A fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of data derived from 394 respondents emphasizes first the nexus of quality and social aspects, then the triad of hygiene, cultural, and price issues, and finally the nexus of quality and novelty aspects. The social element, which embraces social interactions with others and quality time with friends, predominates in forming a positive overall domestic experience, according to an additional qualitative study that delves deeper into the investigated phenomenon by analyzing the responses of forty informants. The findings contribute to the academic milieu of the tourist experience and have direct managerial implications for domestic tourism stakeholders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exploring the joint effects factors affecting high-technology industries' performance is crucial to enhancing the country's overall strength. However, maintaining high industry performance levels has always been a complex issue. The literature mainly focuses on the net effects of single factors. In that case, the authors put forward a configurational framework that is the performance of high-tech industries, and does not depend on a single condition. Based on a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis of high-tech industry performance across Chinese provinces, the authors identify eight conditions affecting industry performance under four latitudes – economic environment, scientific research, technological progress, and government support. The results show that high and non-high levels of performance can be achieved through the different configurations of antecedents. Both economic development and science and technology inputs play an irreplaceable role in industrial performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Constantly evolving economic demands caused by phenomena such as digital transformation necessitate businesses and their underlying models to adapt. One possible solution for enhancing innovation potential and increasing revenue is implementing an innovation capability maturity model. This research replicates an existing maturity model development approach, which accounts for the unique characteristics of a class of companies based on their size and sector. Thus, by using a data-driven method, we provide an innovation capability maturity model for small industrial companies. We identified 21 combinations of factors that can affect innovation capability maturity, grouped into a knowledge and organizational dimension. Using a set-theoretic approach, we identified configurations of these factors that lead to low, medium, and high levels of innovation capability maturity. Based on these findings, we support an empirically driven, set-theoretic approach for developing a maturity model that can be used for higher applicability and representativity in individual classes of companies. An important limitation of regression-based analysis stems from the assumption of symmetric relationships between variables, which is often violated. To overcome this limitation within IS research, we propose the use of the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (FsQCA) method. The paper elaborates on the rationale for applying this approach to IS behavioural research and how to tailor FsQCA for this purpose. A systematic interpretation of the technique covering its mathematical properties and advanced features is provided. Drawing from an illustrative study of mobile government services adoption by residents of rural areas, the paper demonstrates FsQCA's potential to supplement regression-based IS behavioural research, by (i) examining asymmetric relationships between a set of antecedents and the IS phenomenon of interest, (ii) providing nuanced coverage of necessary and sufficient conditions for emergence of an IS behavioural outcome, and (iii) identifying various configurations of conditions in association with users' demographic characteristics. © 2015 Blackwell Publishing Ltd [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although numerous studies show that cooperation relates strongly to obtaining benefits in business innovation, few researchers have considered the role of competition in this relationship. Nevertheless, it is expected that firms can boost their innovation if they cooperate with competitors and with intermediaries. The aim of this study was to observe whether coopeting firms achieve high degrees of innovation. To accomplish this aim, we used a sample of innovative firms from the region of Valencia (Spain). The chosen region has specific structural characteristics, which are discussed later. Although the sampled firms compete with one another, they also collaborate with each other and with intermediaries (i.e., technology centres and local universities). Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) tested propositions established in the conceptual framework. Results show that when competing firms collaborate (i.e., when they 'coopete'), they are able to increase their degree of innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 affected the normal working conditions of many companies, with the retail sector being one of the most affected. Due to this impact on companies and in consumers in general there was an increase in electronic sales. From the perspective of company’s survival, it has been proposed that companies with a strong and diverse resource base of dynamic capabilities have greater financial resilience. The present study thus intends to answer the following questions: “What are the configurations of dynamic capabilities of e-commerce and organizational ambidexterity that contribute to a high financial resilience of retail companies? Have the configurations of dynamic capabilities of e-commerce and organizational ambidexterity that contribute to high financial resilience changed with the pandemic?”. To answers these questions, a configurational approach was applied using fsQCA to analyse data from 231 Portuguese companies in the retail sector for the Information, Transaction and Customization capabilities associated with e-commerce, Exploitation and Exploration capabilities associated with organizational ambidexterity and, also, the size of the companies under study. The results have shown the existence of 3 sufficient configurations for the pre- pandemic period which contribute to the high financial resilience of the companies under analysis. All these results are in line with the existent literature. Additionally, it was found that the 4 configurations related to 2020 (pandemic period) data revealed some differences that may be directly or indirectly associated with the impact of COVID-19. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

[EN] This thesis investigates the type of domestic network strength and type of decisionmaking logic as causal conditions for achieving accelerated internationalisation in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) located in context of institutional voids. Furthermore, this dissertation explore the micro-mechanisms that connect the impact institutional voids, effectual networking and networks strength on the accelerated internationalisation of SMEs from Latin America. The existing literature shows discrepancies among researchers about the individual effect of networks strength, decision-making logic and institutional voids on accelerated internationalisation. Moreover, scholars argue that accelerated internationalization is a complex phenomenon that should be studied by identifying the complex relations among variables. However, it seems that no studies have explore this complex interaction and the connection among these factors. Consequently, researchers advise to increase the investigation about the effects of these variables on the accelerated internationalisation of SMEs. They have also suggest to incorporate effectuation and institutional voids to clarify these discrepancies. On this matter, researches warn that research on effectuation and internationalization is an emerging scientific field that lacks conceptual clarity. Recent studies also advice to move beyond foreign networks to explore the role of domestic networks on accelerated internationalization. Finally, there have been calls to advance research on Latin America that usually has been neglected in the existing literature. Therefore, this thesis aims to provide an approach based on three different methodologies: First, a bibliometric analysis to contribute to classify the literature of effectuation and internationalization, and identify its structure and key trends. Second, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to investigates which causal conditions contribute to accelerated internationalization among 33 contrarian cases (21 from Colombia and 12 from Peru) of SMEs from context with institutional voids. Results show that the combination of weak domestic ties and effectuation logic accelerated the internationalization of SMEs with fewer resource constraints. In contrast, strong domestic ties and causation behaviour lead to accelerated internationalization of SMEs with greater resource constraints. Based on these findings, an integrative model that linked the causal configurations to reach accelerated internationalization is developed. Finally, an ordered logistic regression of 2.987 SMEs from Argentina, Colombia and Peru, to examine the micro-mechanisms that connect institutional voids, effectual networking, networks strength and location on the accelerated internationalisation of SMEs from Latin America. Results show that (1) rural cities, instead of first- and second-tier cities, accelerated the internationalization process of the firm. (2) Institutional voids, effectual networks and strong local ties increase the likelihood of accelerated internationalization. Finally, (3) we found a robust and high interaction effect between effectual networking, significant institutional voids, strong local ties, size of the firm and rural cities location on accelerated internationalization.
