Context. The inner Galaxy is a complex environment, and the relative contributions of different formation scenarios to its observed morphology and stellar properties are still debated. The different components are expected to have different spatial, kinematic, and metallicity distributions, and a combination of photometric, spectroscopic, and astrometric large-scale surveys is needed to study the formation and evolution of the Galactic bulge. Aims. The Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS) provides near-ultraviolet to near-infrared photometry for approximately 250 million unique stars over more than 200 square degrees of the southern Galactic bulge. By combining BDBS photometry with the latest Gaia astrometry, we aim to characterize the chemodynamics of red clump stars across the BDBS footprint using an unprecedented sample size and sky coverage. Methods. Our field of view of interest is |ℓ| ≤ 10°, −10° ≤b ≤ −3°. We constructed a sample of approximately 2.3 million red clump giants in the bulge with photometric metallicities, BDBS photometric distances, and proper motions. Photometric metallicities are derived from a (u − i)0 versus [Fe/H] relation; astrometry, including precise proper motions, is from the third data release (DR3) of the ESA satellite Gaia. We studied the kinematics of the red clump stars as a function of sky position and metallicity by investigating proper-motion rotation curves, velocity dispersions, and proper-motion correlations across the southern Galactic bulge. Results. By binning our sample into eight metallicity bins in the range of −1.5 dex < [Fe/H] < +1 dex, we find that metal-poor red clump stars exhibit lower rotation amplitudes, at ∼29 km s−1 kpc−1. The peak of the angular velocity is ∼39 km s−1 kpc−1 for [Fe/H] ∼ −0.2 dex, exhibiting declining rotation at higher [Fe/H]. The velocity dispersion is higher for metal-poor stars, while metal-rich stars show a steeper gradient with Galactic latitude, with a maximum dispersion at low latitudes along the bulge minor axis. Only metal-rich stars ([Fe/H] ≳ −0.5 dex) show clear signatures of the bar in their kinematics, while the metal-poor population exhibits isotropic motions with an axisymmetric pattern around Galactic longitude ℓ = 0. Conclusions. This work describes the largest sample of bulge stars with distance, metallicity, and astrometry reported to date, and shows clear kinematic differences with metallicity. The global kinematics over the bulge agrees with earlier studies. However, we see striking changes with increasing metallicity, and, for the first time, kinematic differences for stars with [Fe/H]>  − 0.5, suggesting that the bar itself may have kinematics that depends on metallicity. This is the third paper in a series that attempts to observe a clear signature of the Galactic bar/bulge using kinematic observations of the bulge stellar populations in low foreground extinction windows. We report on the detection of ∼100 000 new proper motions in four fields covering the far side of the Galactic bar/bulge, at negative longitudes. Our proper motions have been obtained using observations from the Advance Camera for Surveys (ACS), on board of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), with a time-baseline of 8–9 years, which has produced accuracies better than 0.5 mas yr−1 for a significant fraction of the stellar populations with F 814 W < 23 mag. Interestingly, as shown in previous works, the Hess diagrams show a strikingly similar proper motion distribution to fields closer to the Galactic center and consistent with an old stellar population. The observed kinematics point to a significant bulge rotation, which seems to predominate even in fields as far as l ≃ −8°, and is also reflected in the changes of the velocity ellipsoid in the l, b plane as a function of distance. We present photometric metallicity measurements for a sample of 2.6 million bulge red clump stars extracted from the Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS). Similar to previous studies, we find that the bulge exhibits a strong vertical metallicity gradient, and that at least two peaks in the metallicity distribution functions appear at b < −5°. We can discern a metal-poor ([Fe/H] ∼ −0.3) and metal-rich ([Fe/H] ∼ +0.2) abundance distribution that each show clear systematic trends with latitude, and may be best understood by changes in the bulge's star formation/enrichment processes. Both groups exhibit asymmetric tails, and as a result we argue that the proximity of a star to either peak in [Fe/H] space is not necessarily an affirmation of group membership. The metal-poor peak shifts to lower [Fe/H] values at larger distances from the plane while the metal-rich tail truncates. Close to the plane, the metal-rich tail appears broader along the minor axis than in off-axis fields. We also posit that the bulge has two metal-poor populations – one that belongs to the metal-poor tail of the low latitude and predominantly metal-rich group, and another belonging to the metal-poor group that dominates in the outer bulge. We detect the X-shape structure in fields with |Z| > 0.7 kpc and for stars with [Fe/H] > −0.5. Stars with [Fe/H] < −0.5 may form a spheroidal or 'thick bar' distribution while those with [Fe/H] |$\gtrsim$| −0.1 are strongly concentrated near the plane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Blanco DECam Bulge Survey (BDBS) imaged more than 200 sq deg of the Southern Galactic bulge using the ugrizY filters of the Dark Energy Camera, and produced point spread function photometry of approximately 250 million unique sources. In this paper, we present details regarding the construction and collation of survey catalogues, and also discuss the adopted calibration and dereddening procedures. Early science results are presented with a particular emphasis on the bulge metallicity distribution function and globular clusters. A key result is the strong correlation (σ ∼ 0.2 dex) between (u − i) o and [Fe/H] for bulge red clump giants. We utilized this relation to find that interior bulge fields may be well described by simple closed box enrichment models, but fields exterior to b ∼ −6° seem to require a secondary metal-poor component. Applying scaled versions of the closed box model to the outer bulge fields is shown to significantly reduce the strengths of any additional metal-poor components when compared to Gaussian mixture models. Additional results include: a confirmation that the u band splits the subgiant branch in M22 as a function of metallicity, the detection of possible extratidal stars along the orbits of M 22 and FSR 1758, and additional evidence that NGC 6569 may have a small but discrete He spread, as evidenced by red clump luminosity variations in the reddest bands. The Blanco Dark Energy Camera (DECam) Bulge survey is a Vera Rubin Observatory (LSST) pathfinder imaging survey, spanning ∼200 deg2 of the Southern Galactic bulge, −2° < b < −13° and −11° < l < +11°. We have employed the CTIO-4 m telescope and the DECam to image a contiguous ∼200 deg2 region of the relatively less reddened Southern Galactic bulge, in SDSS u  + Pan-STARRS grizy. Optical photometry with its large colour baseline will be used to investigate the age and metallicity distributions of the major structures of the bulge. Included in the survey footprint are 26 globular clusters imaged in all passbands. Over much of the bulge, we have Gaia DR2 matching astrometry to i ∼ 18, deep enough to reach the faint end of the red clump. This paper provides the background, scientific case, and description of the survey. We present an array of new reddening-corrected colour–magnitude diagrams that span the extent of Southern Galactic bulge. We argue that a population of massive stars in the blue loop evolutionary phase, proposed to lie in the bulge, are instead at ∼2 kpc from the Sun and likely red clump giants in the old disc. A bright red clump near (l, b) = (+ 8°, −4°) may be a feature in the foreground disc, or related to the long bar reported in earlier work. We also report the first map of the blue horizontal branch population spanning the Blanco DECam Bulge Survey field of regard, and our data do not confirm the reality of a number of proposed globular clusters in the bulge. We present radial velocities and chemical abundance ratios of [Fe/H], [O/Fe], [Si/Fe], and [Ca/Fe] for 264 red giant branch stars in three Galactic bulge off-axis fields located near (l, b) = (-5.5, -7), (-4, -9), and (+8.5, +9). The results are based on equivalent width and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution (R ≈ 18,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N~75-300 pixel-1) spectra obtained with the Hydra spectrographs on the Blanco 4m and WIYN 3.5 m telescopes. The targets were selected from the blue side of the giant branch to avoid cool stars that would be strongly affected by CN and TiO; however, a comparison of the color-metallicity distribution in literature samples suggests that our selection of bluer targets should not present a significant bias against metal-rich stars. We find a full range in metallicity that spans [Fe/H] ≈ -1.5 to +0.5, and that, in accordance with the previously observed minor-axis vertical metallicity gradient, the median [Fe/H] also declines with increasing Galactic latitude in off-axis fields. The off-axis vertical [Fe/H] gradient in the southern bulge is estimated to be ~0.4 dex kpc-1; however, comparison with the minor-axis data suggests that a strong radial gradient does not exist. The (+8.5, +9) field exhibits a higher than expected metallicity, with a median [Fe/H]=-0.23, that might be related to a stronger presence of the X-shaped bulge structure along that line-of-sight. This could also be the cause of an anomalous increase in the median radial velocity for intermediate metallicity stars in the (+8.5, +9) field. However, the overall radial velocity and dispersion for each field are in good agreement with recent surveys and bulge models. All fields exhibit an identical, strong decrease in velocity dispersion with increasing metallicity that is consistent with observations in similar minor-axis outer bulge fields. Additionally, the [O/Fe], [Si/Fe], and [Ca/Fe] versus [Fe/H] trends are identical among our three fields, and are in good agreement with past bulge studies. We find that stars with [Fe/H] ≲ -0.5 are α-enhanced, and that the [α/Fe] ratios decline at higher metallicity. At [Fe/H] ≲ 0, the α-element trends are indistinguishable from the halo and thick disk, and the variations in the behavior of individual α-elements are consistent with production in massive stars and a rapid bulge formation timescale. We report chemical abundances of Na, Al, Zr, La, Nd, and Eu for 39 red giant branch (RGB) stars and 23 potential inner disk red clump stars located in Plaut's low-extinction window. We also measure lithium for a super Li-rich RGB star. The abundances were determined by spectrum synthesis of high-resolution (R ≈ 25,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N ~ 50-100 pixel-1) spectra obtained with the Blanco 4 m telescope and Hydra multifiber spectrograph. For the bulge RGB stars, we find a general increase in the [Na/Fe] and [Na/Al] ratios with increasing metallicity, and a similar decrease in [La/Fe] and [Nd/Fe]. Additionally, the [Al/Fe] and [Eu/Fe] abundance trends almost identically follow those of the α-elements, and the [Zr/Fe] ratios exhibit relatively little change with [Fe/H]. The consistently low [La/Eu] ratios of the RGB stars indicate that at least a majority of bulge stars formed rapidly (≾ 1 Gyr) and before the main s-process could become a significant pollution source. In contrast, we find that the potential inner disk clump stars exhibit abundance patterns more similar to those of the thin and thick disks. Comparisons between the abundance trends at different bulge locations suggest that the inner and outer bulges formed on similar timescales. However, we find evidence of some abundance differences between the most metal-poor and metal-rich stars in various bulge fields. The data also indicate that the halo may have had a more significant impact on the outer bulge initial composition than the inner bulge composition. The [Na/Fe], and to a lesser extent [La/Fe], abundances further indicate that the metal-poor bulge, at least at ~1 kpc from the Galactic center, and thick disk may not share an identical chemistry.
