The most metal-poor stars (e.g., [Fe/H] ≤ –2.5) are the ancient fossils from the early assembly epoch of our Galaxy. They very likely formed before the the thick disk. Recent studies have shown that a non-negligible fraction of them have prograde planar orbits, which means that their origin is a puzzle. It has been suggested that a later-formed rotating bar could have driven these old stars from the inner Galaxy outward and transformed their orbits so that they became more dominated by rotation. However, it is unclear whether this mechanism can explain these stars as observed in the solar neighborhood. We explore whether this scenario is feasible by tracing these stars backward in an axisymmetric Milky Way potential with a bar as perturber. We integrated their orbits backward for 6 Gyr under two bar models: one model with a constant pattern speed, and the other with a decelerating speed. Our experiments show that for the constantly rotating bar model, the stars of interest are little affected by the bar and cannot have been driven from a spheroidal inner Milky Way to their current orbits. In the extreme case of a decelerating bar, some of the very metal-poor stars on planar and prograde orbits can be brought from the inner Milky Way, but ∼90% of them were nevertheless already dominated by rotation (Jϕ ≥ 1000 km s−1 kpc) 6 Gyr ago. The chance that these stars started with spheroid-like orbits with low rotation (Jϕ ≲ 600 km s−1 kpc) is very low (< 3%). We therefore conclude that within the solar neighborhood, the bar is unlikely to have shepherded a significant fraction of spheroid stars in the inner Galaxy to produce the overdensity of stars on prograde planar orbits that is observed today. We use resolved spectroscopy from MaNGA to investigate the significance of both local and global properties of galaxies to the cessation of star formation at kpc scales. Quenched regions are identified from a sample of isolated disk galaxies by a single-parameter criterion D n (4000) - log EW(H α) > 1.6 − log 2 = 1.3 , and are divided into gas-rich quenched regions (GRQRs) and gas-poor quenched regions according to the surface density of cold gas (Σgas). Both types of quenched regions tend to be hosted by non-AGN galaxies with relatively high mass (M * ≳ 1010 M ⊙) and red colors (NUV − r ≳ 3), as well as low star formation rate and high central density at fixed mass. They span wide ranges in other properties including structural parameters that are similar to the parent sample, indicating that the conditions responsible for quenching in gas-rich regions are largely independent of the global properties of galaxies. We train random forest classifiers and regressors for predicting quenching in our sample with 15 local/global properties. Σ* is the most important property for quenching, especially for GRQRs. These results strongly indicate the important roles of low-mass hot evolved stars, which are numerous and long-lived in quenched regions and can provide substantial radiation pressure to support the surrounding gas against gravitational collapse. Ongoing deep integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) observations of disc galaxies provide opportunities for comparison with the Milky Way (MW) to understand galaxy evolution. However, such comparisons are marred by many challenges such as selection effects, differences in observations and methodology, and proper validation of full-spectrum fitting methods. In this study, we present a novel code GalCraft to address these challenges by generating mock IFS data cubes of the MW using simple stellar population models and a mock MW stellar catalogue derived from E-galaxia. We use the widely adopted full-spectrum fitting code ppxf to investigate the ability to recover kinematics and stellar populations for an edge-on mock MW IFS observation. We confirm that differences in kinematics, mean age, |$[\mathrm{M/H}]$|⁠ , and |$[\mathrm{\alpha /Fe}]$| between thin and thick discs can be distinguished. However, the age distribution is overestimated in the ranges between |$2{-}4$| and |$12{-}14$|  Gyr compared to the expected values. This is likely due to the age spacing and degeneracy of SSP templates. We find systematic offsets in the recovered kinematics due to insufficient spectral resolution and the variation of line-of-sight velocity distribution with age and |$[\mathrm{M/H}]$|⁠. With future higher resolution and multi- |$[\mathrm{\alpha /Fe}]$| simple stellar population templates, GalCraft will be useful to validate key signatures such as |$[\mathrm{\alpha /Fe}]$| – |$[\mathrm{M/H}]$| distribution at different R and |$|z|$| and potentially infer radial migration and kinematic heating efficiency to study detailed chemodynamical evolution of MW-like galaxies. Stellar halos of galaxies retain crucial clues to their mass assembly history. It is in these galactic components that the remains of cannibalised galactic building blocks are deposited. For the case of the Milky Way, the opportunity to analyse the stellar halo's structure on a star-by-star basis in a multi-faceted approach provides a basis from which to infer its past and assembly history in unrivalled detail. Moreover, the insights that can be gained about the formation of the Galaxy not only help constrain the evolution of our Milky Way, but may also help place constraints on the formation of other disc galaxies in the Universe. This paper includes a summary of work undertaken during a PhD thesis aiming to make progress toward answering the most fundamental question in the field of Galactic archaeology: "How did the Milky Way form?" Through the effort to answer this question, we summarise new insights into aspects of the history of assembly and evolution of our Galaxy and measurements of the structure of various of its Galactic components. Context. Recent evidence from spectroscopic surveys points towards the presence of a metal-poor, young stellar population in the low- α, chemically thin disk. In this context, the investigation of the spatial distribution and time evolution of precise, unbiased abundances is fundamental to disentangle the scenarios of formation and evolution of the Galaxy. Aims. We study the evolution of abundance gradients in the Milky Way by taking advantage of a large sample of open star clusters, which are among the best tracers for this purpose. In particular, we used data from the last release of the Gaia-ESO survey. Methods. We performed a careful selection of open cluster member stars, excluding those members that may be affected by biases in spectral analysis. We compared the cleaned open cluster sample with detailed chemical evolution models for the Milky Way, using well-tested stellar yields and prescription for radial migration. We tested different scenarios of Galaxy evolution to explain the data, namely, the two-infall and the three-infall frameworks, which suggest the chemical thin disk is formed by one or two subsequent gas accretion episodes, respectively. Results. With the performed selection in cluster member stars, we still find a metallicity decrease between intermediate-age (1 < Age/Gyr < 3) and young (Age < 1 Gyr) open clusters. This decrease cannot be explained in the context of the two-infall scenario, even by accounting for the effect of migration and yield prescriptions. The three-infall framework, with its late gas accretion in the last 3 Gyr, is able to explain the low metallic content in young clusters. However, we have invoked a milder metal dilution for this gas infall episode relative to previous findings. Conclusions. To explain the observed low metallic content in young clusters, we propose that a late gas accretion episode triggering a metal dilution would have taken place, extending the framework of the three-infall model for the first time to the entire Galactic disk. Context. The Milky Way's history of recent disturbances is vividly demonstrated by a structure in the vertical phase-space distribution known as the Gaia phase spiral. A one-armed phase spiral has been seen widely across the Milky Way disc, while a two-armed one has only been observed in the solar neighbourhood. Aims. This study aims to determine the properties of the two-armed phase spiral and to put it in a Galactic context, with the ultimate goal of understanding the structure and history of the Milky Way disc. Methods. The Gaia DR3 data were used to trace and characterise the two-armed phase spiral. Special focus was put on the phase spiral's spatial distribution, rotational behaviour, and chemical characteristics. To quantify the properties of the phase spiral, we used a model that fits a spiral pattern to the phase space distribution of the stars. Results. We found that the two-armed phase spiral is detectable only within a narrow range of galactocentric distances and angular momenta in the solar neighbourhood, R = 8 ± 0.5 kpc, LZ = 1450 ± 50 kpc km s−1. Outside this region, the phase spiral is one-armed. The two-armed phase spiral rotates with the phase angle, in a similar way to the one-armed phase spiral, and changes axis ratio with phase angle. Additionally, stars within the phase-space overdensity caused by the two-armed phase spiral pattern have slightly higher mean metallicity than stars in the underdense regions of the pattern at equivalent galactocentric distances, angular momenta, and vertical orbit extents. Conclusions. The two-armed phase spiral rotates with phase angle and its effect can be seen in metallicity, in a similar way to the one-armed phase spiral. However, the limited range over which it can be found, and its variation in shape are quite different from the one-armed version, suggesting it is a much more localised phenomenon in the Galactic disc. Context. Analysis of several spectroscopic surveys indicates the presence of a bimodality between the disc stars in the abundance ratio space of [α/Fe] versus [Fe/H]. The two stellar groups are commonly referred to as the high-α and low-α sequences. Some models capable of reproducing such a bimodality invoke the presence of a hiatus in the star formation history in our Galaxy, whereas other models explain the two sequences by means of stellar migration. Aims. Our aim is to show that the existence of the gap in the star formation rate between high-α and low-α is evident in the stars of APOGEE DR17, if one plots [Fe/α] versus [α/H], confirming previous suggestions. We then try to interpret the data by means of detailed chemical models. Methods. We compare the APOGEE DR17 red giant stars with the predictions of a detailed chemical evolution model based on the two-infall paradigm, taking into account also the possible accretion of dwarf satellites. Results. The APOGEE DR17 abundance ratios [Fe/α] versus [α/H] exhibit a sharp increase in [Fe/α] at a nearly constant [α/H] (where α elements considered are Mg, Si, O) during the transition between the two disc phases. This observation strongly supports the hypothesis that a hiatus in star formation occurred during this evolutionary phase. Notably, the most pronounced growth in the [Fe/α] versus [α/H] relation is observed for oxygen, as this element is exclusively synthesised in core-collapse supernovae. The revised version of the two-infall chemical evolution model proposed in this study reproduces the APOGEE DR17 abundance ratios better than before. Particularly noteworthy is the model's ability to predict the hiatus in the star formation between the two infalls of gas, which form the thick and thin disc, respectively, and thus generate abundance ratios compatible with APOGEE DR17 data. Conclusions. We show that the signature of a hiatus in the star formation is imprinted in the APOGEE DR17 abundance ratios. A chemical model predicting a pause in the star formation of a duration of roughly 3.5 Gyr, and in which the high-α disc starts forming from pre-enriched gas by a previous encounter with a dwarf galaxy, could well explain the observations [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Recent works use a linear birth metallicity gradient to estimate the evolution of the [Fe/H] profile in the Galactic disk over time, and infer stellar birth radii (Rbirth) from [Fe/H] and age measurements. These estimates rely on the evolution of [Fe/H] at the Galactic center ([Fe/H](0, τ)) and the birth metallicity gradient (∇[Fe/H](τ)) over time – quantities that are unknown and inferred under key assumptions. Aims. In this work, we use the sample of Milky Way and Andromeda analogues from the TNG50 simulation to investigate the ability to recover [Fe/H](R, τ) in a variety of galaxies. Methods. Using stellar disk particles, we tested the assumptions required in estimating Rbirth, [Fe/H](0, τ), and ∇[Fe/H](τ) using recently proposed methods to understand when they are valid. Results. We show that ∇[Fe/H](τ) can be recovered in most galaxies to within 26% from the range in [Fe/H] across age, with better accuracy for more massive and stronger barred galaxies. We also find that the true central metallicity is unrepresentative of the genuine disk [Fe/H] profile; thus we propose to use a projected central metallicity instead. About half of the galaxies in our sample do not have a continuously enriching projected central metallicity, with a dilution in [Fe/H] correlating with mergers. Most importantly, galaxy-specific [Fe/H](R, τ) can be constrained and confirmed by requiring the Rbirth distributions of mono-age, solar neighborhood populations to follow inside-out formation. Conclusions. We conclude that examining trends with Rbirth is valid for the Milky Way disk and similarly structured galaxies, where we expect Rbirth can be recovered to within 20% assuming today's measurement uncertainties in TNG50. We derived the metallicity profile of the Milky Way low-α disc population from 2 to 20 kpc from the Galactic centre in 1 Gyr age bins using the astroNN catalogue, and we show that it is highly structured, with a plateau between 4 and 7 kpc and a break at 10–12 kpc. We argue that these features result from the two main bar resonances, the corotation and the outer Lindblad resonance (OLR), respectively. We show that the break in the metallicity profile is most visible in stars having 7–8 Gyr, reaching an amplitude of about 0.4 dex, and it is the signpost of the position of the bar OLR. The bar formation was accompanied by an episode of radial migration triggered by it slowing down and it is responsible for spreading old metal-rich stars up to the OLR. The data show that the slowdown of the bar ended 6–7 Gyr ago. Based on numerical simulations that reproduce well the characteristic break observed in the metallicity profile, we argue that this implies that the bar formed in our Galaxy 8–10 Gyr ago. Analysis of the metallicity distribution as a function of radius shows no evidence of significant systematic outward radial migration after this first episode. We argue that the variation of the metallicity dispersion as a function of the guiding radius is dominated by the migration triggered by the bar, but also that the libration of orbits around the bar resonances induces a mixing that may have a significant impact on the observed metallicity dispersion. In contrast, the absence of a break in the metallicity profile of populations younger than ∼6 Gyr and the flattening of the gradient at younger ages is interpreted as evidence that the strength of the bar has decreased, loosening its barrier effect and allowing the gas and metals on both sides of the OLR to mix, erasing the break. Beyond the OLR, stars younger than 7 Gyr show very small metallicity dispersion, suggesting that no or limited mixing induced by the spiral arms has occurred in the outer disc. We investigate how the stellar rotational support changes as a function of spatially resolved stellar population age (⁠|$D_n4000$|⁠) and relative central stellar surface density (⁠|$\Delta \Sigma _1$|⁠) for MaNGA isolated/central disc galaxies. We find that the galaxy rotational support indicator |$\lambda _{R_\mathrm{e}}$| varies smoothly as a function of |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| and |$D_n4000$|⁠. |$D_n4000$| versus |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| follows a 'J-shape', with |$\lambda _{R_\mathrm{e}}$| contributing to the scatters. In this 'J-shaped' pattern rotational support increases with central |$D_n4000$| when |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| is low but decreases with |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| when |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| is high. Restricting attention to low- |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| (i.e. large-radius) galaxies, we suggest that the trend of increasing rotational support with |$D_n4000$| for these objects is produced by a mix of two different processes, a primary trend characterized by growth in |$\lambda _{R_\mathrm{e}}$| along with mass through gas accretion, on top of which disturbance episodes are overlaid, which reduce rotational support and trigger increased star formation. An additional finding is that star-forming galaxies with low |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| have relatively larger radii than galaxies with higher |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| at fixed stellar mass. Assuming that these relative radii rankings are preserved while galaxies are star forming then implies clear evolutionary paths in central |$D_n4000$| versus |$\Delta \Sigma _1$|⁠. The paper closes with comments on the implications that these paths have for the evolution of pseudo-bulges versus classical bulges. The utility of using |$\rm D_n4000$| – |$\Delta \Sigma _1$| to study |$\lambda _{R_\mathrm{e}}$| reinforces the notion that galaxy kinematics correlate both with structure and with stellar-population state, and indicates the importance of a multidimensional description for understanding bulge and galaxy evolution. The North–South asymmetry in the number density and bulk velocity of stars in the Solar neighbourhood provides valuable insights into the formation and evolution of the Milky Way disc. Our objective is to investigate the wave-like disc oscillations of mono-age stellar populations in the Solar neighbourhood using data from Gaia Data Release 3. We have selected a comprehensive sample of main-sequence turn-off stars. The ages of these stars can be accurately determined using isochrone fitting methods. Our findings indicate that the North–South density and mean vertical velocity asymmetries remain consistent across all age groups. The uniformity of perturbations across all subsamples suggests that all populations are responding to the same external influence, which likely affects them irrespective of their age. Moreover, the fact that these perturbations appear consistently implies they could be either ongoing or recent. The question of whether the Milky Way's disc extends to low metallicity has been the subject of debate for many years. We aim to address the question by employing a large sample of giant stars with radial velocities and homogeneous metallicities based on the Gaia Data Release 3 BP/RP(XP) spectra. We study the 3D velocity distribution of stars in various metallicity ranges, including the very metal-poor (VMP) regime (⁠|$\mathrm{[M/H]} < -2.0$|⁠). We find that a clear, stand-alone disc population, i.e. that with a ratio of rotational velocity to velocity dispersion |$v/\sigma > 1$|⁠ , starts to emerge only around |$\mathrm{[M/H]} \sim -1.3$|⁠ , and is not visible for |$\mathrm{[M/H]} < -1.6$|⁠. Using Gaussian mixture modelling, we show that there are two halo populations in the VMP regime: one stationary and one with a net prograde rotation of |$\sim\!\! 80\ \mathrm{km\, s}^{-1}$|⁠. In this low-metallicity range, we are able to place constraints on the contribution of a rotation-supported thick disc sub-population to a maximum of |$\sim\!\! 3$| per cent in our sample. The study presents a theoretical framework for understanding the role of dark matter on the stability of the galactic disc. We model the galaxy as a two-component system consisting of stars and gas in equilibrium with an external dark matter halo. We derive the equations governing the growth of perturbations and obtain a stability criterion that connects the potential of the dark matter halo and the gas fraction with the stability levels of the galaxy. We find that a two-component disc is more susceptible to the growth of gravitational instabilities than individual components, particularly as gas fractions increase. However, the external field, due to the dark matter halo, acts as a stabilizing agent and increases the net stability levels even in the presence of a cold gas component. We apply the stability criterion to models of the Milky Way, low surface brightness galaxies, and baryon-dominated cold rotating disc galaxies observed in the early universe. Our results show that the potential due to the dark matter halo plays a significant role in stabilizing nearby galaxies, such as the Milky Way, and low surface brightness galaxies, which would otherwise be prone to local gravitational instabilities. However, we find that the baryon-dominated cold disc galaxies observed in the early universe remain susceptible to the growth of local gravitational instabilities despite the stabilizing effect of the dark matter halo. Gaseous, disc–halo interfaces are shaped by processes that are critical to galaxy evolution, including gas accretion and outflows. Extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (eDIG) layers are characterized by scale heights that largely exceed those predicted by their temperature, suggesting the presence of turbulent energy injection from star-formation feedback. However, the origin of this large-scale height remains uncertain. To explore the connection between eDIG and star-forming discs, we present a spatially resolved case study of a nearby pair of sub- |$L_*$|⁠ , intermediately inclined disc galaxies NGC 3511/3513. We decompose optical nebular lines observed using long-slit spectroscopy into narrow and broad velocity components. In NGC 3511, the broad component has three distinctive characteristics in comparison to the narrow component: (1) significantly higher velocity dispersions (a median |$\langle \sigma \rangle _{\text{Broad}} = 24$|  km s |$^{-1}$| compared to |$\langle \sigma \rangle _{\text{Narrow}} = 13$|  km s |$^{-1}$|⁠), (2) elevated [N  ii ] |$\lambda$| 6583/H |$\alpha$| and [S  ii ] |$\lambda$| 6716/H |$\alpha$| line ratios, and (3) a rotational velocity lag. These characteristics support the origin of the broad component in an extraplanar, gaseous disc. In NGC 3513, the broad component reveals disc–halo circulation via localized outflows at radius |$\lesssim 1$|  kpc. For NGC 3511, we test a vertical hydrostatic equilibrium model with pressure support supplied by thermal and turbulent motions. Under this assumption, the eDIG velocity dispersion corresponds to a scale height |$h_{z} \gtrsim 0.2 - 0.4$|  kpc at |$R = 3 - 5$|  kpc, a factor of a few above the thermal scale height (⁠|$h_{z} \lesssim 0.1$|  kpc). Context. Stellar bars are common morphological structures in the local Universe; according to optical and NIR surveys, they are present in about two-thirds of disc galaxies. These elongated structures are also believed to play a crucial role in secular evolutionary processes, because they are able to efficiently redistribute gas, stars, and angular momentum within their hosts, although it remains unclear as to whether they enhance or suppress star formation. A useful tool to investigate this ambiguity is the main sequence (MS) relation, which tightly links stellar mass (M⋆) and star formation rate (SFR). Aims. The main goal of this work is to explore star-formation processes in barred galaxies in order to assess the relevance of bars in star-formation quenching and whether or not they affect the typical log-linear trend of the resolved MS. Methods. To this purpose, we carried out a spatially resolved analysis on subkiloparsec (subkpc) scales for a sample of six nearby barred galaxies. We collected multi-wavelength photometric data from far-ultraviolet (FUV) to far-infrared (FIR) from the DustPedia database and applied a panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting procedure on square apertures of fixed angular size (8″ × 8″) using the magphys code. Results. For each galaxy, we obtain the distributions of stellar mass and SFR surface density and relate them in the log Σ⋆ − log ΣSFR plane, deriving the spatially resolved MS relation. Although significant galaxy-to-galaxy variations are in place, we infer the presence of a common anti-correlation track in correspondence with the bar-hosting region, which shows systematically lower SFRs. This central quiescent signature can be interpreted as the result of a bar-driven depletion of gas reservoirs and a consequent halting of star formation. Past studies have long emphasised the key role played by galactic stellar bars in the context of disc secular evolution, via the redistribution of gas and stars, the triggering of star formation, and the formation of prominent structures such as rings and central mass concentrations. However, the exact physical processes acting on those structures, as well as the timescales associated with the building and consumption of central gas reservoirs are still not well understood. We are building a suite of hydro-dynamical RAMSES simulations of isolated, low-redshift galaxies that mimic the properties of the PHANGS sample. The initial conditions of the models reproduce the observed stellar mass, disc scale length, or gas fraction, and this paper presents a first subset of these models. Most of our simulated galaxies develop a prominent bar structure, which itself triggers central gas fuelling and the building of an over-density with a typical scale of 100−1000 pc. We confirm that if the host galaxy features an ellipsoidal component, the formation of the bar and gas fuelling are delayed. We show that most of our simulations follow a common time evolution, when accounting for mass scaling and the bar formation time. In our simulations, the stellar mass of 1010 M⊙ seems to mark a change in the phases describing the time evolution of the bar and its impact on the interstellar medium. In massive discs (M⋆ ≥ 1010 M⊙), we observe the formation of a central gas reservoir with star formation mostly occurring within a restricted starburst region, leading to a gas depletion phase. Lower-mass systems (M⋆ < 1010 M⊙) do not exhibit such a depletion phase, and show a more homogeneous spread of star-forming regions along the bar structure, and do not appear to host inner bar-driven discs or rings. Our results seem to be supported by observations, and we briefly discuss how this new suite of simulations can help our understanding of the secular evolution of main sequence disc galaxies. Context. Open clusters provide valuable information on stellar nucleosynthesis and the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk, as their age and distances can be measured more precisely with photometry than in the case of field stars. Aims. Our aim is to study the chemical distribution of the Galactic disk using open clusters by analyzing the existence of gradients with Galactocentric distance, azimuth, or height from the plane and dependency with age. Methods. We used the high-resolution spectra (R > 60 000) of 194 stars belonging to 36 open clusters to determine the atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances with two independent methods: equivalent widths and spectral synthesis. The sample was complemented with 63 clusters with high-resolution spectroscopy from literature. Results. We measured LTE abundances for 21 elements: α (Mg, Si, Ca, and Ti), odd-Z (Na and Al), Fe-peak (Fe, Sc, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn), and neutron-capture (Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, and Nd). We also provide non-local thermodynamic equilibrium abundances for elements when corrections are available. We find inner disk young clusters enhanced in [Mg/Fe] and [Si/Fe] compared to other clusters of their age. For [Ba/Fe], we report an age trend flattening for older clusters (age < 2.5 Ga). The studied elements follow the expected radial gradients as a function of their nucleosynthesis groups, which are significantly steeper for the oldest systems. Edge-on galaxies act as the best laboratories to understand the origin of thin and thick discs in galaxies. Measurement of spatially resolved stellar population properties in such galaxies, particularly age, metallicity, and [α/Fe], are crucial to understanding the formation and evolution of disc galaxies. Such measurements are made possible from stellar population model fits to deep integral field spectroscopic (IFU) observations of resolved galaxies. We utilize archival MUSE IFU observations of the edge-on galaxy ESO 544-27 to uncover the formation history of its thin and thick discs through its stellar populations. We find the thin disc of the galaxy is dominated by an old (>9 Gyr) low [α/Fe] metal-rich stellar population. Its outer thick disc is dominated by an old (>9 Gyr) high [α/Fe] metal-rich component that should have formed with higher star formation efficiency than the Milky Way thick disc. We thus find [α/Fe] dichotomy in ESO 544-27 with its thin and thick discs dominated by low and high [α/Fe] stellar populations, respectively. However, we also find a metal-rich younger (<2 Gyr old) stellar population in ESO 544-27. The galaxy was nearly quenched until its star formation was reignited recently first in the outer and inner thick disc (∼1 Gyr ago) and then in the thin disc (∼600 Myr ago). We thus find that both the low [α/Fe] thin and high [α/Fe] thick discs of ESO 544-27 are inhabited primarily by similarly old metal-rich stellar populations, a contrast to that of other galaxies with known thin and thick disc stellar population properties. We analyse a sample of massive disc galaxies selected from the fourth-generation Sloan Digital Sky Survey/Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey to investigate how the evolution of these galaxies depends on their stellar and halo masses. We applied a semi-analytic spectral fitting approach to the data from different regions in the galaxies to derive several of their key physical properties. From the best-fitting model results, together with direct observables such as morphology, colour, and the Mg b /〈Fe〉 index ratio measured within 1 R e, we find that for central galaxies both their stellar and halo masses have a significant influence in their evolution. For a given halo mass, galaxies with higher stellar mass accumulate their stellar mass and become chemically enriched earlier than those with smaller stellar mass. Furthermore, at a given stellar mass, galaxies living in more massive haloes have longer star formation time-scales and are delayed in becoming chemically enriched. In contrast, the evolution of massive satellite galaxies is mostly determined by their stellar mass. The results indicate that both the assembled halo mass and the halo assembly history impact the evolution of central galaxies. Our spatially resolved analysis indicates that only the galaxy properties in the central region (0.0–0.5 R e) show the dependencies described above. This fact supports a halo-driven formation scenario since the galaxies' central regions are more likely to contain old stars formed along with the halo itself, keeping a memory of the halo formation process. Empirical studies of the relationship between baryonic matter in galaxies and the gravitational potential of their host haloes are important to constrain our theoretical framework for galaxy formation and evolution. One such relation, between the atomic hydrogen (H  i) mass of central galaxies (M H  i ,c) and the total mass of their host haloes (M halo), has attracted significant interest in the last few years. In this work, we use the extended GALEX Arecibo SDSS Survey to examine the scatter of the H  i– halo mass relation for a representative sample of central galaxies. Our findings reveal a flat median relation at |$\mathrm{ log}_{10}(M_{\rm {H\,{\small I},c}}/\rm {M}_{\odot }) \approx 9.40$|⁠ , across |$11.1 \lt \mathrm{ log}_{10}(M_{\rm {halo}}/{{\rm M}_{\odot }}) \lt 14.1$|⁠. This flat relation stems from the statistical dominance of star-forming, disc galaxies at low M halo in combination with the increasing prevalence of passive, high stellar concentration systems at higher M halo. The scatter of this relation and the stellar specific angular momentum of centrals have a strong link (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient ≥0.5). Comparisons with simulations suggest that the kinematic state of host haloes may be primarily driving this scatter. Our findings highlight that the H  i –halo mass parameter space is too complex to be completely represented by simple median or average relations and we show that tensions with previous works are most likely due to selection biases. We recommend that future observational studies, and their comparisons with theoretical models, bin central galaxies also by their secondary properties to enable a statistically robust understanding of the processes regulating the cold gas content within central galaxies of dark matter haloes. The presence of a stellar bar in a disc galaxy indicates that the galaxy hosts in its main part a dynamically settled disc and that bar-driven processes are taking place in shaping its evolution. Studying the cosmic evolution of the bar fraction in disc galaxies is therefore essential to understand galaxy evolution in general. Previous studies have found, using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), that the bar fraction significantly declines from the local Universe to redshifts near one. Using the first four pointings from the JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey and the initial public observations for the Public Release Imaging for Extragalactic Research, we extend the studies of the bar fraction in disc galaxies to redshifts 1 ≤ |$z$| ≤ 3, that is, for the first time beyond redshift two. We only use galaxies that are also present in the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey on the Extended Groth Strip and Ultra Deep Survey HST observations. An optimized sample of 368 close-to-face-on galaxies is visually classified to find the fraction of bars in disc galaxies in two redshift bins: 1 ≤ |$z$| ≤ 2 and 2 < |$z$| ≤ 3. The bar fraction decreases from |$\approx 17.8^{+ 5.1}_{- 4.8}$|  per cent to |$\approx 13.8^{+ 6.5}_{- 5.8}$|  per cent (from the lower to the higher redshift bin), but is about twice the bar fraction found using bluer HST filters. Our results show that bar-driven evolution might commence at early cosmic times and that dynamically settled discs are already present at a lookback time of ∼11 Gyr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is well established that stellar discs are destabilized by sharp features in their phase space, driving recurrent spiral modes. We explore the extent to which surface-density breaks in disc galaxies – which represent sharp changes in the gradient of the disc density – drive new spiral modes. We employ linear perturbation theory to investigate how disc breaks alter the eigenmode spectrum of an otherwise pure exponential disc. We find that the presence of a density break gives rise to a set of new, vigorously growing, modes. For a given multiplicity, these edge modes occur in pairs, with closely separated resonances between each pair. The growth rate of edge modes decreases when the break is weakened or moved outward to lower-density regions of the disc. Both down- and up-bending profiles excite edge modes, whose origin can be best understood via the gravitational torques they exert on the underlying disc. When the profile is down-bending (Type II) the faster growing mode is the inner one while in the up-bending (Type III) case the outer mode is faster growing. In both cases, the faster growing mode has a corotation almost coincident with the break. We show that the torques of the edge modes tend to smoothen the break. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present N -body simulations of the process of bulge formation in disc galaxies due to inward migration of massive stellar clumps. The process is accompanied by dark halo heating, with a quasi-isothermal core replacing the initial central density cusp, transforming an initially dark matter dominated central region into a baryon dominated one. The characteristics of the clumps are chosen to be compatible with low redshift observations of stellar clumps in DYNAMO-HST galaxies, which may be relatively long lived in terms of being robust against internal starburst-instigated disruption. We thus test for disruption due to tidal stripping using different clump internal radial profiles; Plummer, Hernquist, and Jaffe, in ascending order of see per central density profile. Our calculations predict that in order for clump migration to be effective in building galactic bulges and dark halo cores, steeply increasing central clump profiles, or a less massive or less concentrated haloes, are preferred. The dependence on such factors may contribute to the diversity in observed total mass distributions and resulting rotation curves in galaxies. We investigate the relationship between the baryonic angular momentum and mass for a sample of 36 isolated disc galaxies with resolved neutral hydrogen (H  i) kinematics and infrared Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer photometry drawn from – and representative in terms of morphologies, stellar masses, and H  i -to-star fraction of – the carefully constructed Analysis of the interstellar Medium in Isolated GAlaxies (AMIGA) sample of isolated galaxies. Similarly to previous studies performed on non-isolated galaxies, we find that the relation is well described by a power law |$j_{\rm bar} \propto M_{\rm bar}^\alpha$|⁠. We also find a slope of α = 0.54 ± 0.08 for the AMIGA galaxies, in line with previous studies in the literature; however, we find that the specific angular momenta of the AMIGA galaxies are on average higher than those of non-isolated galaxies in the literature. This is consistent with theories stipulating that environmental processes involving galaxy–galaxy interaction are able to impact the angular momentum content of galaxies. However, no correlation was found between the angular momentum and the degree of isolation, suggesting that there may exist a threshold local number density beyond which the effects of the environment on the angular momentum become important. The co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes (SMBHs) underpins our understanding of galaxy evolution, but different methods to measure SMBH masses have only infrequently been cross-checked. We attempt to identify targets to cross-check two of the most accurate methods, megamaser, and cold molecular gas dynamics. Three promising galaxies are selected from all those with existing megamaser SMBH mass measurements. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) 12CO (2–1) and 230-GHz continuum observations with angular resolutions of ≈0 |${_{.}^{\prime\prime}}$| 5. Every galaxy has an extended rotating molecular gas disc and 230-GHz continuum source(s), but all also have irregularities and/or non-axisymmetric features: NGC 1194 is highly inclined and has disturbed and lopsided central 12CO (2–1) emission; NGC 3393 has a nuclear disc with fairly regular but patchy 12CO (2–1) emission with little gas near the kinematic major axis, faint emission in the very centre, and two brighter structures reminiscent of a nuclear ring and/or spiral; NGC 5765B has a strong bar and very bright 12CO (2–1) emission concentrated along two bisymmetric offset dust lanes and two bisymmetric nuclear spiral arms. 12CO (2–1) and 12CO (3–2) observations with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope are compared with the ALMA observations. Because of the disturbed gas kinematics and the impractically long integration times required for higher angular resolution observations, none of the three galaxies is suitable for a future SMBH mass measurement. None the less, increasing the number of molecular gas observations of megamaser galaxies is valuable, and the ubiquitous disturbances suggest a link between large-scale gas properties and the existence of megamasers. Star formation has been observed to occur at globally low yet locally varying efficiencies. As such, accurate capture of star formation in numerical simulations requires mechanisms that can replicate both its smaller scale variations and larger scale properties. Magnetic fields are thought to play an essential role within the turbulent interstellar medium (ISM) and affect molecular cloud collapse. However, it remains to be fully explored how a magnetized model of star formation might influence galaxy evolution. We present a new model for a sub-grid star formation recipe that depends on the magnetic field. We run isolated disc galaxy simulations to assess its impact on the regulation of star formation using the code ramses. Building upon existing numerical methods, our model derives the star formation efficiency from local properties of the sub-grid magnetized ISM turbulence, assuming a constant Alfvén speed at sub-parsec scales. Compared to its non-magnetized counterpart, our star formation model suppresses the initial starburst by a factor of 2 while regulating star formation later on to a nearly constant rate of ∼1 M⊙ yr−1. Differences also arise in the local Schmidt law with a shallower power-law index for the magnetized star formation model. Our results encourage further examination into the notion that magnetic fields are likely to play a non-trivial role in our understanding of star and galaxy formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent discovery of barred spiral galaxies in the early Universe (z > 2) poses questions of how these structures form and how they influence galaxy evolution in the early Universe. In this study, we investigate the morphology and kinematics of the far-infrared (FIR) continuum and [C  ii ] emission in BRI1335-0417 at z ≈ 4.4 from ALMA observations. The variations in position angle and ellipticity of the isophotes show the characteristic signature of a barred galaxy. The bar, |$3.3^{+0.2}_{-0.2}$| kpc long in radius and bridging the previously identified two-armed spiral, is evident in both [C  ii ] and FIR images, driving the galaxy's rapid evolution by channelling gas towards the nucleus. Fourier analysis of the [C  ii ] velocity field reveals an unambiguous kinematic m  = 2 mode with a line-of-sight velocity amplitude of up to ∼30–40 km s−1; a plausible explanation is the disc's vertical bending mode triggered by external perturbation, which presumably induced the high star formation rate and the bar/spiral structure. The bar identified in [C  ii ] and FIR images of the gas-rich disc galaxy (≳ 70 per cent of the total mass within radius R ≈ 2.2 disc scale lengths) suggests a new perspective of early bar formation in high redshift gas-rich galaxies – a gravitationally unstable gas-rich disc creating a star-forming gaseous bar, rather than a stellar bar emerging from a pre-existing stellar disc. This may explain the prevalent bar-like structures seen in FIR images of high-redshift submillimeter galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We analyzed the deconvolved surface brightness profiles of 247 massive and angularly large disk galaxies at 1 ≤ z ≤ 3 to study high-redshift disk breaks, using F356W-band images from the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey (CEERS). We found that 12.6% of these galaxies exhibit type I (exponential) profiles, 56.7% exhibit type II (down-bending) profiles, and 34.8% exhibit type III (up-bending) profiles. Moreover, we showed that galaxies that are more massive, centrally concentrated, or redder, tend to show fewer type II and more type III breaks. These fractions and the detected dependencies on galaxy properties are in good agreement with those observed in the Local Universe. In particular, the ratio of the type II disk break radius to the bar radius in barred galaxies typically peaks at a value of 2.25, perhaps due to bar-induced radial migration. However, the timescale for secular evolution may be too lengthy to explain the observed breaks at such high redshifts. Instead, violent disk instabilities may be responsible, where spiral arms and clumps torque fling out the material, leading to the formation of outer exponential disks. Our understanding of how the size of galaxies has evolved over cosmic time is based on the use of the half-light (effective) radius as a size indicator. Although the half-light radius has many advantages for structurally parameterising galaxies, it does not provide a measure of the global extent of the objects, but only an indication of the size of the region containing the innermost 50% of the galaxy's light. Therefore, the observed mild evolution of the effective radius of disc galaxies with cosmic time is conditioned by the evolution of the central part of the galaxies rather than by the evolutionary properties of the whole structure. Expanding on recent works, we studied the size evolution of disc galaxies using the radial location of the gas density threshold for star formation as a size indicator. As a proxy to evaluate this quantity, we used the radial position of the truncation (edge) in the stellar surface mass density profiles of galaxies. To conduct this task, we selected 1048 disc galaxies with Mstellar > 1010 M⊙ and spectroscopic redshifts up to z = 1 within the HST CANDELS fields. We derived their surface brightness, colour and stellar mass density profiles. Using the new size indicator, the observed scatter of the size–mass relation (∼0.1 dex) decreases by a factor of ∼2 compared to that using the effective radius. At a fixed stellar mass, Milky Way-like (MW-like; Mstellar ∼ 5 × 1010 M⊙) disc galaxies have, on average, increased their sizes by a factor of two in the last 8 Gyr, while the surface stellar mass density at the edge position (Σedge) has decreased by more than an order of magnitude from ∼13 M⊙ pc−2 (z = 1) to ∼1 M⊙ pc−2 (z = 0). These results reflect a dramatic evolution of the outer part of MW-like disc galaxies, with an average radial growth rate of its discs of about 1.5 kpc Gyr−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of energetic outflows from galactic nuclei in shaping galaxy formation and evolution is still shrouded in uncertainty. In this study, we shed light on this complex phenomenon by presenting evidence for a large-scale bipolar radio/X-ray-emitting bubble-like structure emanating from the central region of the nearby disc galaxy M106 (NGC 4258). Our findings, based on Low-Frequency Array survey data and Chandra observations, provide a glimpse into the underlying physical processes driving this enigmatic structure. Similar to the eROSITA / Fermi bubbles in our own Galaxy, the M106 bubbles enclose diffuse hot plasma and are partially bounded by prominent radio/X-ray-emitting edges. We constrain the magnetic field and cosmic-ray properties of the structure. The analysis of the X-ray data gives an estimate of the thermal energy of the bubbles as ∼8 × 1056 erg. This energy can be supplied by the jets and perhaps by the wind from the accretion flow of the galaxy's low-luminosity AGN, which most likely has been much more powerful in the recent past, with an average mechanical energy release rate of ∼4 × 1042 erg s−1 over the last ∼8 × 106 yr – the estimated age of the structure. We also show evidence for diffuse X-ray emission on larger scales, indicating the presence of a hot galactic corona. Our results provide a clear manifestation of galactic nuclear feedback regulating the gas content and energetics of the circumgalactic medium of disc galaxies similar to our own. The role of magnetic fields in galaxy evolution is still an unsolved question in astrophysics. We have previously shown that magnetic fields play a crucial role in major mergers between disc galaxies; in hydrodynamic simulations of such mergers, the Auriga model produces compact remnants with a distinctive bar and ring morphology. In contrast, in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, remnants form radially extended discs with prominent spiral arm structure. In this paper, we analyse a series of cosmological 'zoom-in' simulations of major mergers and identify exactly how magnetic fields are able to alter the outcome of the merger. We find that magnetic fields modify the transport of angular momentum, systematically hastening the merger progress. The impact of this altered transport depends on the orientation of the field, with a predominantly non-azimuthal (azimuthal) orientation increasing the central baryonic concentration (providing support against collapse). Both effects act to suppress an otherwise existent bar-instability, which in turn leads to a fundamentally different morphology and manifestation of feedback. We note, in particular, that stellar feedback is substantially less influential in MHD simulations, which allows for the later accretion of higher angular momentum gas and the subsequent rapid radial growth of the remnant disc. A corollary of the increased baryonic concentration in MHD simulations is that black holes are able to grow twice as large, although this turns out to have little impact on the remnant's development. Large-scale asymmetries (i.e. lopsidedness) are a common feature in the stellar density distribution of nearby disc galaxies both in low- and high-density environments. In this work, we characterize the present-day lopsidedness in a sample of 1435 disc-like galaxies selected from the TNG50 simulation. We find that the percentage of lopsided galaxies (10  per cent–30  per cent) is in good agreement with observations if we use similar radial ranges to the observations. However, the percentage (58  per cent) significantly increases if we extend our measurement to larger radii. We find a mild or lack of correlation between lopsidedness amplitude and environment at z  = 0 and a strong correlation between lopsidedness and galaxy morphology regardless of the environment. Present-day galaxies with more extended discs, flatter inner galactic regions, and lower central stellar mass density (i.e. late-type disc galaxies) are typically more lopsided than galaxies with smaller discs, rounder inner galactic regions, and higher central stellar mass density (i.e. early-type disc galaxies). Interestingly, we find that lopsided galaxies have, on average, a very distinct star formation history within the last |$10\, \mathrm{Gyr}$|⁠ , with respect to their symmetric counterparts. Symmetric galaxies have typically assembled at early times (∼8– |$6\, \mathrm{Gyr}$| ago) with relatively short and intense bursts of central star formation, while lopsided galaxies have assembled on longer time-scales and with milder initial bursts of star formation, continuing building up their mass until z  = 0. Overall, these results indicate that lopsidedness in present-day disc galaxies is connected to the specific evolutionary histories of the galaxies that shaped their distinct internal properties. A significant part of barred disc galaxies exhibits boxy/peanut-shaped structures (B/PS bulges) at high inclinations. Another structure also associated with the bar is a barlens, often observed in galaxies in a position close to face-on. At this viewing angle, special kinematic tests are required to detect a 3D extension of the bars in the vertical direction (B/PS bulges). We use four pure N -body models of galaxies with B/PS bulges, which have different bar morphology from bars with barlenses to the so-called face-on peanut bars. We analyse the kinematics of our models to establish how the structural features of B/PS bulges manifest themselves in the kinematics for galaxies at intermediate inclinations and whether these features are related to the barlenses. We apply the dissection of the bar into different orbital groups to determine which of them are responsible for the features of the LOSVD (line-of-sight velocity distribution), i.e. for the deep minima of the h 4 parameter along the major axis of the bar. As a result, we claim that for our models at the face-on position, the kinematic signatures of a 'peanut' indeed track the vertical density distribution features. We conclude that orbits responsible for such kinematic signatures differ from model to model. We pay special attention to the barlens model. We show that orbits assembled into barlens are not responsible for the kinematic signatures of B/PS bulges. The bar structure in disc galaxies models is formed by different families of orbits; however, it is not clear how these families of orbits support the bar throughout its secular evolution. Here, we analyse the orbital structure on three stellar disc N -body models embedded in a live dark matter halo. During the evolution of the models, discs naturally form a bar that buckles out of the galactic plane at different ages of the galaxy evolution generating boxy, X, peanut, and/or elongated shapes. To understand how the orbit families hold the bar structure, we evaluate the orbital evolution using the frequency analysis on phase space coordinates for all disc particles at different time intervals. We analyse the density maps morphology of the 2:1 family as the bar potential evolves. We showed that the families of orbits providing bar support exhibit variations during different stages of its evolutionary process, specifically prior to and subsequent to the buckling phase, likewise in the secular evolution of the bar. The disc-dominated model develops an internal boxy structure after the first Gyr. Afterwards, the outer part of the disc evolves into a peanut-shape, which lasts till the end of the simulation. The intermediary model develops the boxy structure only after 2 Gyr of evolution. The peanut shape appears 2 Gyr later and evolves slowly. The halo-dominated model develops the boxy structure much later, around 3 Gyr, and the peanut morphology is just incipient at the end of the simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a key driver of the secular evolution of disc galaxies, bar formation is potentially linked to the surrounding tidal field. We systematically investigate the dependence of bars on both the small (⁠|${\lt }2\, \mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$|⁠) and large (⁠|${\gt }5\, \mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$|⁠) scale tidal fields using galaxies observed in the range 0.01 < z < 0.11 by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We characterize bar strength using the ellipticity of the isophote that corresponds to each bar, e bar, derived from its galaxy image after subtracting the 2D disc component. We demonstrate the efficacy of our bar detection method by performing an extensive comparison with the visual identifications from SDSS and the DESI Legacy Surveys. Using the Yang et al. SDSS group catalogue, we confirm the results from a recent study that the average e bar of galaxies within interacting clusters is higher than that within isolated ones at 0.01 < z < 0.06, but this small-scale tidal enhancement of bars disappears after we increase the cluster sample by a factor of 5 to z  = 0.11. On large scales, we explore the dependence of e bar on α5, the tidal anisotropy of the density field defined over |$5\, \mathrm{Mpc}\,h^{-1}$|⁠. We do not detect any such dependence for 98  per cent of the galaxies with α5 < 10. Intriguingly, among the 2  per cent with α5 ≥ 10, we detect some hint of a boost in bar strength in the underdense regions and a suppression in the overdense regions. Combining our results on both scales, we conclude that there is little evidence for the tidal dependence of bar formation in the local Universe, except for the extremely anisotropic environments. We present results on the morphological and structural evolution of a total of 3956 galaxies observed with JWST at 1.5 < z < 6.5 in the JWST CEERS observations that overlap with the CANDELS EGS field. This is the biggest visually classified sample observed with JWST yet, ∼20 times larger than previous studies, and allows us to examine in detail how galaxy structure has changed over this critical epoch. All sources were classified by six individual classifiers using a simple classification scheme aimed at producing disk/spheroid/peculiar classifications, whereby we determine how the relative number of these morphologies has evolved since the Universe's first billion years. Additionally, we explore structural and quantitative morphology measurements using Morfometryka, and show that galaxies with M * > 109 M ⊙ at z > 3 are not dominated by irregular and peculiar structures, either visually or quantitatively, as previously thought. We find a strong dominance of morphologically selected disk galaxies up to z = 6 in this mass range. We also find that the stellar mass and star formation rate densities are dominated by disk galaxies up to z ∼ 6, demonstrating that most stars in the Universe were likely formed in a disk galaxy. We compare our results to theory to show that the fraction of types we find is predicted by cosmological simulations, and that the Hubble Sequence was already in place as early as one billion years after the Big Bang. Galactic halos accrete material from the intergalactic medium (IGM) and part of this accretion is expected to be in the form of cool (T ∼ 104 K) gas. A signature of this process could reside in the detection of numerous clouds in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). However, whether this material is able to accrete onto the galaxies and feed their star formation or, instead, evaporates into the CGM hot phase (corona, T ∼ 106 K), is not yet understood. Here, we investigate the evolution of cool CGM clouds accreted from the IGM and falling through the hot corona of low-redshift disc galaxies, using 3D high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations. We include the effects of gravity due to the dark matter halo, isotropic thermal conduction, radiative cooling, and an ionizing UV background. We explored different values of parameters such as the halo mass, coronal mass, initial cloud velocity and strength of the thermal conduction. We find that the clouds lose the vast majority of their mass at distances larger than half of the galaxy virial radius and are completely dissolved in the corona before reaching the central galaxy. Resolving the Field length with at least 5–7 cells is crucial to correctly capture the evolution of the infalling cool gas. Our results indicate that cool IGM accretion can not feed star formation in z ∼ 0 star-forming galaxies in halos with masses of 1011.9 M⊙ or above. This suggests that present-day massive star-forming galaxies can sustain their star formation only via the spontaneous or induced cooling of their hot corona. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many disc galaxies host galactic bars, which exert time-dependent, non-axisymmetric forces that can alter the orbits of stars. There should be both angle and radius dependences in the resulting radial rearrangement of stars ('radial mixing') due to a bar; we present here novel results and trends through analysis of the joint impact of these factors. We use an N -body simulation to investigate the changes in the radial locations of star particles in a disc after a bar forms by quantifying the change in orbital radii in a series of annuli at different times post bar formation. We find that the bar induces both azimuth angle- and radius-dependent trends in the median distance that stars have travelled to enter a given annulus. Angle-dependent trends are present at all radii we consider, and the radius-dependent trends roughly divide the disc into three 'zones'. In the inner zone, stars generally originated at larger radii and their orbits evolved inwards. Stars in the outer zone likely originated at smaller radii and their orbits evolved outwards. In the intermediate zone, there is no net inwards or outwards evolution of orbits. We adopt a simple toy model of a radius-dependent initial metallicity gradient and discuss recent observational evidence for angle-dependent stellar metallicity variations in the Milky Way in the context of this model. We briefly comment on the possibility of using observed angle-dependent metallicity trends to learn about the initial metallicity gradient(s) and the radial rearrangement that occurred in the disc. Aims. At intermediate redshift, galaxy groups and clusters are thought to impact galaxy properties such as their angular momentum. We investigate whether the environment has an impact on the galaxies' stellar angular momentum and identify underlying driving physical mechanisms. Methods. We derived robust estimates of the stellar angular momentum using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images combined with spatially resolved ionised gas kinematics from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) for a sample of ∼200 galaxies in groups and in the field at z ∼ 0.7 drawn from the MAGIC survey. Using various environmental tracers, we study the position of the galaxies in the angular momentum–stellar mass (Fall) relation as a function of environment. Results. We measured a 0.12 dex (2σ significant) depletion of stellar angular momentum for low-mass galaxies (M⋆ < 1010M⊙) located in groups with respect to the field. Massive galaxies located in dense environments have less angular momentum than expected from the low-mass Fall relation but, without a comparable field sample, we cannot infer whether this effect is mass or environmentally driven. Furthermore, these massive galaxies are found in the central parts of the structures and have low systemic velocities. The observed depletion of angular momentum at low stellar mass does not appear linked with the strength of the over-density around the galaxies but it is strongly correlated with (i) the systemic velocity of the galaxies normalised by the dispersion of their host group and (ii) their ionised gas velocity dispersion. Conclusions. Galaxies in groups appear depleted in angular momentum, especially at low stellar mass. Our results suggest that this depletion might be induced by physical mechanisms that scale with the systemic velocity of the galaxies (e.g., stripping or merging) and that such a mechanism might be responsible for enhancing the velocity dispersion of the gas as galaxies lose angular momentum. Feeding with gas in streams is well established to be an important galaxy growth mechanism. Using an idealized set-up of an isolated galaxy, we study the impact of stream feeding (with 107 M⊙ Myr−1 rate) on the star formation and outflows of disc galaxies with ∼1011 M⊙ baryonic mass. The magnetohydrodynamical simulations are carried out with the piernik code and include star formation, feedback from supernova, and cosmic ray advection and diffusion, on a uniform grid with 195 pc spatial resolution. We find that the introduction of a cold gas stream accreted by the disc enhances galactic star formation. Lower angular momentum streams result in more compact discs, higher star formation rates and stronger outflows. In agreement with previous studies, models including cosmic rays launch stronger outflows travelling much further into the galactic halo. Cosmic ray supported outflows are also cooler than supernova only driven outflows. With cosmic rays, the star formation is suppressed and the thermal pressure is reduced. We find evidence for two distinct outflow phases. The warm outflows have high angular momentum and stay close to the galactic disc, while the hot outflow phase has low angular momentum and escapes from the centre deep into the halo. Cosmic rays can therefore have a strong impact on galaxy evolution by removing low angular momentum, possibly metal enriched gas from the disc and injecting it into the circumgalactic medium. The formation and evolution of galaxies have proved sensitive to the inclusion of stellar feedback, which is therefore crucial to any successful galaxy model. We present INFERNO, a new model for hydrodynamic simulations of galaxies, which incorporates resolved stellar objects with star-by-star calculations of when and where the injection of enriched material, momentum, and energy takes place. INFERNO treats early stellar kinematics to include phenomena such as walkaway and runaway stars. We employ this innovative model on simulations of a dwarf galaxy and demonstrate that our physically motivated stellar feedback model can drive vigorous galactic winds. This is quantified by mass and metal loading factors in the range of 10–100, and an energy loading factor close to unity. Outflows are established close to the disc, are highly multiphase, spanning almost 8 orders of magnitude in temperature, and with a clear dichotomy between mass ejected in cold, slow-moving (T ≲ 5 × 104 K, v < 100 km s−1) gas and energy ejected in hot, fast-moving (T > 106 K, v > 100 km s−1) gas. In contrast to massive disc galaxies, we find a surprisingly weak impact of the early stellar kinematics, with runaway stars having little to no effect on our results, despite exploding in diffuse gas outside the dense star-forming gas, as well as outside the galactic disc entirely. We demonstrate that this weak impact in dwarf galaxies stems from a combination of strong feedback and a porous interstellar medium, which obscure any unique signatures that runaway stars provide. Galaxy evolution can be dramatically affected by the environment, especially by the dense environment of a galaxy cluster. Recent observational studies show that massive galaxies undergoing strong ram-pressure stripping (RPS) have an enhanced frequency of nuclear activity. We investigate this topic using a suite of wind-tunnel hydrodynamical simulations of a massive M star = 1011 M ⊙ disk galaxy with 39 pc resolution and including star formation and stellar feedback. We find that RPS increases the inflow of gas to the galaxy center regardless of the wind impact angle. This increase is driven by the mixing of interstellar and nonrotating intracluster media at all wind angles, and by increased torque on the inner disk gas, mainly from local pressure gradients when the intracluster medium (ICM) wind has an edge-on component. In turn, the strong pressure torques are driven by rising ram pressure. We estimate the black hole (BH) accretion using Bondi–Hoyle and torque models, and compare it with the mass flux in the central 140 pc region. We find that the torque model predicts much less accretion onto the BH of a RPS galaxy than the Bondi–Hoyle estimator. We argue that both models are incomplete: the commonly used torque model does not account for torques caused by the gas distribution or local pressure gradients, while the Bondi–Hoyle estimator depends on the sound speed of the hot gas, which includes the ICM in stripped galaxies. The epoch in which galactic discs settle is a major benchmark for testing models of galaxy formation and evolution but remains largely unknown. Once discs settle and become sufficiently self-gravitating, stellar bars are able to form; therefore, determining the ages of bars can shed light on the epoch of disc settling, and on the onset of secular evolution. Nevertheless, timing when the bar formed has proven challenging. In this work we present a new methodology for obtaining the bar age, using the star formation history of nuclear discs. Nuclear discs are rotation-supported structures, built by gas pushed to the centre via bar-induced torques, and their formation is thus coincident with bar formation. In particular, we used integral field spectroscopic data from the TIMER survey to disentangle the star formation history of the nuclear disc from that of the underlying main disc, which enables us to more accurately determine when the nuclear disc formed. We demonstrate the methodology on the galaxy NGC 1433 – which we find to host an old bar that is 7.5−1.1+1.6(sys)−0.5+0.2(stat) 7. 5 − 1.1 + 1.6 (sys) − 0.5 + 0.2 (stat) $ 7.5^{+1.6}_{-1.1}\rm{(sys)}^{+0.2}_{-0.5}\rm{(stat)} $ Gyr old – and describe a number of tests carried out on both the observational data and numerical simulations. In addition, we present evidence that the nuclear disc of NGC 1433 grows in accordance with an inside-out formation scenario. This methodology is applicable to high-resolution integral field spectroscopic data of barred galaxies with nuclear discs, making it ideally suited for the TIMER survey sample. Chemical abundance variations in the interstellar medium provide important information about the galactic evolution, star-formation, and enrichment histories. Recent observations of disk galaxies suggest that if large-scale azimuthal metallicity variations appear in the ISM, they are linked to the spiral arms. In this work, using a set of chemodynamical simulations of the Milky Way-like spiral galaxies, we quantify the impact of gas radial motions (migration) in the presence of a pre-existing radial metallicity gradient and the local ISM enrichment on both global and local variations of the mean ISM metallicity in the vicinity of the spiral arms. In all the models, we find the scatter of the gas metallicity of ≈0.04 − 0.06 dex at a given galactocentric distance. On large scales, we observe the presence of spiral-like metallicity patterns in the ISM which are more prominent in models with the radial metallicity gradient. However, in our simulations, the morphology of the large-scale ISM metallicity distributions significantly differs from the spiral arm structure in stellar and gas components resulting in both positive and negative residual (after subtraction of the radial gradient) metallicity trends along spiral arms. We discuss the correlations of the residual ISM metallicity values with the star formation rate, gas kinematics and offset to the spiral arms, concluding that the presence of a radial metallicity gradient is essential for the azimuthal variations of metallicity. We use a dynamical model of galactic fountain to study the neutral extraplanar gas (EPG) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403. We have modelled the EPG as a combination of material ejected from the disc by stellar feedback (i.e. galactic fountain) and gas accreting from the inner circumgalactic medium (CGM). This accretion is expected to occur because of cooling/condensation of the hot CGM (corona) triggered by the fountain. Our dynamical model reproduces the distribution and kinematics of the EPG H  i emission in NGC 2403 remarkably well and suggests a total EPG mass of |$4.7^{+1.2}_{-0.9}\times 10^8\, \mathrm{M_\odot }$|⁠ , with a typical scale height of around 1 kpc and a vertical gradient of the rotation velocity of |$-10.0\pm 2.7\, \mathrm{km\, s^{-1}\, kpc^{-1}}$|⁠. The best-fitting model requires a characteristic outflow velocity of |$50\pm 10\, \mathrm{km\, s^{-1}}$|⁠. The outflowing gas starts out mostly ionized and only becomes neutral later in the trajectory. The accretion rate from the condensation of the inner hot CGM inferred by the model is 0.8  |$\mathrm{M}_\odot \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$|⁠ , approximately equal to the star-formation rate in this galaxy (0.6  |$\mathrm{M}_\odot \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$|⁠). We show that the accretion profile, which peaks at a radius of about 4.5 kpc, predicts a disc growth rate compatible with the observed value. Our results indicate that fountain-driven corona condensation is a likely mechanism to sustain star formation, as well as the disc inside-out growth in local disc galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent observations and simulations indicate substantial evolution in the properties of galaxies with time, wherein rotationally supported and steady thin discs (like those frequently observed in the local Universe) emerge from galaxies that are clumpy, irregular, and have bursty star formation rates (SFRs). To better understand the progenitors of local disc galaxies, we carry out an analysis of three FIRE-2 simulated galaxies with a mass similar to the Milky Way at redshift z  = 0. We show that all three galaxies transition from bursty to steady SFRs at a redshift between z  = 0.5 and z  = 0.8, and that this transition coincides with the rapid (≲1 Gyr) emergence of a rotationally supported interstellar medium (ISM). In the late phase with steady SFR, the rotational energy comprises |${\gtrsim }90{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the total kinetic + thermal energy in the ISM, and is roughly half the gravitational energy. By contrast, during the early bursty phase, the ISM initially has a quasi-spheroidal morphology and its energetics are dominated by quasi-isotropic in- and outflows out of virial equilibrium. The subdominance of rotational support and out-of-equilibrium conditions at early times challenge the application of standard equilibrium disc models to high-redshift progenitors of Milky Way-like galaxies. We further find that the formation of a rotationally-supported ISM coincides with the onset of a thermal pressure supported inner circumgalactic medium (CGM). Warps are observed in a large fraction of disc galaxies, and can be due to a large number of different processes. Some of these processes might also cause vertical heating and flaring. Using a sample of galaxies simulated in their cosmological context, we study the connection between warping and disc heating. We analyse the vertical stellar density structure within warped stellar discs, and monitor the evolution of the scale heights of the mono-age populations and the geometrical thin and thick disc during the warp's lifetime. We also compare the overall thickness and the vertical velocity dispersion in the disc before and after the warp. We find that for warps made of pre-existing stellar particles shifted off-plane, the scale heights do not change within the disc's warped region: discs bend rigidly. For warps made of off-plane new stellar material (either born in situ or accreted), the warped region of the disc is not well described by a double sech2 density profile. Yet, once the warp is gone, the thin and thick disc structure is recovered, with their scale heights following the same trends as in the region that was never warped. Finally, we find that the overall thickness and vertical velocity dispersion do not increase during a warp, regardless of the warp's origin. This holds even for warps triggered by interactions with satellites, which cause disc heating but before the warp forms. The specific angular momenta (j ≡ J / M) of stars (j ⋆), gas (j gas), baryons as a whole (j b) and dark matter haloes (j h) contain clues of vital importance about how galaxies form and evolve. Using one of the largest samples of disc galaxies (S0–BCD) with high-quality rotation curves and near-infrared surface photometry, we perform a detailed comparative analysis of j that stretches across a variety of galaxy properties. Our analysis imposes tight constraints on the 'retained' fractions of specific angular momentum (j ⋆/ j h, j H  i / j h, and j b/ j h), as well as on their systematic trends with mass fraction and galaxy morphology, thus on how well specific angular momentum is conserved in the process of disc galaxy formation and evolution. In particular, one of the most innovative results of our analysis is the finding that galaxies with larger baryon fractions have also retained larger fractions of their specific angular momentum. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates how challenging it is to characterize barred galaxies from a gravitational instability point of view. This is true not only for the popular Efstathiou, Lake & Negroponte bar instability criterion, which fails to separate barred from non-barred galaxies in about 55 per cent of the cases, but also for the mass-weighted Toomre parameter of atomic gas, 〈 Q H  i 〉, which succeeds in separating barred from non-barred galaxies, but only in a statistical sense. Stellar orbits and the evolution of galaxies are intertwined processes that have long-term implications on each other. This paper studies how stellar orbits at the galaxy's central region are disturbed by an asymmetric dark matter halo potential. Evidence from the observations and simulations in the Milky Way type galaxy suggests that the center of the dark matter halo could be off-centered by a few parsecs concerning the center of the core. The equations of motion of stars in the core of galaxies are expressed in terms of three-dimensional perturbed potential arising from the offset halo. The central region's azimuthal variation in the effective potential is obtained and the first-order epicyclic theory is used to solve for the orbits. The magnitude of this perturbation potential grows at small radii and exhibits m = 1 azimuthal fluctuations. In the central region, within 3 kpc radius, even a small halo offset of 300 pc can cause a surprisingly strong spatial and kinematical lopsidedness. A planar orbit, initially assumed to be in disc plane, tends to leave the plane giving rise to non-planar configuration. Furthermore, as long as the halo offset persists, the central region will stay lopsided.
