In this study, we explore the impact of the galactic interaction/mergers on the central oxygen abundance. We analyse 234 star-forming galaxies included in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey with integrated molecular gas observations from the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment millimeter telescope and the CARMA interferometer. This database has the most optical integral field spectroscopy data with CO data for yet, with integrated measurements within |$\sim 1~{R_{\rm{eff}}}$|⁠. Our sample includes 125 isolated galaxies (control sample) and 109 galaxies in different merging stages. We find that despite whether the merging galaxies show an increase or decrease in their molecular gas fraction, the oxygen abundance does not vary significantly, in comparison to our control sample. Therefore, the enhancement and suppression of oxygen abundance are similar in both isolated galaxies and interacting/merging galaxies. On the contrary, regardless of the merger stage (including isolated sample), galaxies that present an increase in their specific star formation rate present a metallicity dilution. Using spatially resolved fossil record analysis on a large sample of 'red and dead' elliptical galaxies (classical ellipticals, CLEs) from the MaNGA/SDSS-IV DR15 survey, we reconstruct the archaeological evolution of their radial gradients in mass-to-luminosity ratio (M / L), g − r colour, and specific star formation (SF) rate. We also calculate other metrics that quantify the inside-out SF quenching and external mass growth processes. The M / L gradients, ∇Υ⋆, are approximately flat at high look-back times (t lb), but then they become negative and steeper until an epoch, when this trend reverses. These trends are shifted to later epochs the less massive the galaxies are. Colour gradients follow qualitatively similar trends. We find that these trends are mainly driven by strong inside-out quenching, without significant outer growth or structural changes overall. Our results suggest a scenario where the main progenitors of local CLE galaxies evolved quasi-passively after an early dissipative phase, but underwent radial photometric changes due to the inside-out quenching that led to the systematic decrease of ∇Υ⋆ and to an increase of the light-weighted radius. The late reversing of ∇Υ⋆, t lb≈2 − 4 Gyr, roughly coincides with the global quenching of the CLE galaxies. We have pushed archaeological inferences to the limit, but thanks to the large number of objects and an understanding of how the caveats and assumptions affect our results, we conclude that they offer an average description of evolutionary behaviours of CLE progenitors that is valid at least qualitatively. We present here the exploration of the physical properties of the sample of H  ii regions and aggregations of the last H  ii regions catalogue of the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. This sample comprises the optical spectroscopic properties of more than ∼26 000 ionized regions corresponding to 924 galaxies from the Integral Field Spectroscopy data, including the flux intensity and equivalent widths and the properties of their underlying stellar population. In the current study, we derive a set of physical quantities for all these regions based on those properties, including (i) the fraction of young stars; (ii) the ionization strength (using six different estimations); (iii) the oxygen abundance (using 25 different calibrators); (iv) the nitrogen and nitrogen-to-oxygen abundance; (v) the dust extinction; and (vi) the electron density. Using this data set, we explore how the loci in the classical diagnostic diagrams are connected with those quantities, the radial distributions of these parameters, and the interrelations between themselves and with the properties of the underlying stellar populations. We conclude that many properties of the H  ii regions are tightly related to the galactic stellar evolution at the location where those regions are observed. Those properties are modulated only as a second-order effect by the properties of the ionizing stars and the ionized nebulae that do not depend on the astrophysical context in which they are formed. Our results highlight the importance of H  ii regions to explore the chemical evolution in galaxies, clarifying which of their properties can be used as proxies of that evolution. We apply stellar population synthesis analysis to obtain spatially resolved archaeological inferences for a large sample of 'red and dead' Elliptical galaxies (Classical Ellipticals, CLEs) from the MaNGA/SDSS-IV DR15 survey. From their 2D stellar light and mass maps, we explore the differences between the radial mass and light distributions in the rest-frame bands g ,  r , and i as functions of look-back time, t lb, or redshift, z. We characterize these differences through the ratios between the following mass- and light-derived global properties: sizes, concentrations, and effective surface densities. We find that the mass-to-light ratios of these properties change with t lb, more the more massive the galaxies are. The CLE galaxy archaeological progenitors are, on average, less compact, concentrated, and dense in light than in mass as z decreases. However, at later times, when also the evolution of the progenitors becomes passive at all radii, there is an upturn in these trends and the differences between mass and light in compactness/concentration decrease towards z ∼ 0. The trends in the ratios of mass-to-light sizes agree qualitatively with results from direct observations in galaxy surveys at different redshifts. We discuss the caveats and interpretations of our results, and speculate that the strong structural evolution found in some previous studies for early-type galaxies could be explained partially by photometric changes rather than by intrinsic structural changes. We present a new characterization of the relations between star-formation rate, stellar mass, and molecular gas mass surface densities at different spatial scales across galaxies (from galaxy-wide to kpc scales). To do so, we make use of the largest sample combining spatially resolved spectroscopic information with CO observations, provided by the Extragalactic Database for Galaxy Evolution (EDGE)–Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey, together with new single-dish CO observations obtained by the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX). We show that these relations are the same at the different scales explored, sharing the same distributions for the explored data, with similar slope, intercept, and scatter (when characterized by a simple power law). From this analysis, we propose that these relations are the projection of a single relation between the three properties that follows a distribution described well by a line in three-dimensional parameter space. Finally, we show that observed secondary relations between the residuals and the parameters considered are explained fully by the correlation between the uncertainties, and therefore have no physical origin. We present a novel method to retrieve the chemical structure of galaxies using integral field spectroscopy data through the stellar Metallicity Distribution Function (MDF). This is the probability distribution of observing stellar populations having a metallicity Z. We apply this method to a set of 550 galaxies from the CALIFA survey. We present the behaviour of the MDF as a function of the morphology, the stellar mass, and the radial distance. We use the stellar metallicity radial profiles retrieved as the first moment of the MDF, as an internal test for our method. The gradients in these radial profiles are consistent with the known trends: they are negative in massive early-type galaxies and tend to positive values in less massive late-type ones. We find that these radial profiles may not convey the complex chemical structure of some galaxy types. Overall, low mass galaxies (log  M ⋆/M⊙ ≤ 10) have broad MDFs (⁠|$\sigma _Z\sim 1.0\,$|  dex), with unclear dependence on their morphology. However this result is likely affected by under-represented bins in our sample. On the other hand, massive galaxies (log  M ⋆/M⊙ ≥ 11) have systematically narrower MDFs (⁠|$\sigma _Z\le 0.2\,$|  dex). We find a clear trend whereby the MDFs at rk / Re > 1.5 have large variance. This result is consistent with sparse SFHs in medium/low stellar density regions. We further find there are multimodal MDFs in the outskirts (⁠|$\sim 18\,$|  per cent) and the central regions (⁠|$\sim 40\,$|  per cent) of galaxies. This behaviour is linked to a fast chemical enrichment during early stages of the SFH, along with the posterior formation of a metal-poor stellar population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. We study the spatially resolved properties of 343 elliptical galaxies with the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at the Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. Aims. Our goal is to understand the fundamental processes of formation and quenching of elliptical galaxies. Methods. We used the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys for accurate morphological classification. Based on integrated spectroscopic properties and colors, we classified seven classes of elliptical galaxies. We inferred the stellar age and metallicity gradients out to a 1.5 effective radius (Reff) of classical "red and dead", recently quenched, and blue star-forming ellipticals (CLEs, RQEs, and BSFs), corresponding to 73%, 10%, and 4% of the sample, respectively. Additionally, we reconstructed their global and radial histories of star formation and mass growth. Results. The mass- and luminosity-weighted age gradients of CLEs are nearly flat or mildly negative, with small differences between both ages. The respective metallicity gradients are negative (∇log[Zmw] = −0.11−0.08+0.07 dex/Reff and ∇log[Zlw] = −0.11−0.07+0.06 dex/Reff, respectively), being flatter as the mass is smaller. The more massive CLEs formed stars earlier and quenched faster than the less massive ones. The CLEs show a weak inside-out growth and a clear inside-out quenching. They finished their quenching globally 3.8  ±  1.2 Gyr ago on average, with quenching time-scales of 3.4  ±  0.8 Gyr. At M⋆ < 1011 M⊙, the age and Z gradients of the RQEs and BSFs are flatter than those of the CLEs, but with larger scatters. They show very weak inside-out growth and quenching, which is slow and not even completed at z ∼ 0 for the BSFs. Instead, the massive RQEs show an outside-in quenching and positive gradients in the luminosity-weighted age and stellar metallicities. The RQEs of all masses quenched 1.2 ± 0.9 Gyr ago on average. Conclusions. Our results for the CLEs are consistent with a two-phase scenario where their inner parts formed by an early and coeval dissipative collapse with a consequent burst of star formation and further quenching, whereas the outer parts continued their assembly, likely by dry mergers. We use the stellar kinematics for 2458 galaxies from the MaNGA survey to explore a universal fundamental plane (UFP) described by the equation , defined by the logarithms of effective radius, Re; the surface brightness within Re, Ie; the dynamical mass-to-light ratio within Re, Ye; and the total velocity parameter at Re, , where is the rotation velocity and is the velocity dispersion. The surface brightness is within Re, Ie, and the dynamical mass-to-light ratio is within Re, ϒe. We use sophisticated Schwarzschild dynamical models for a subsample of 300 galaxies from the CALIFA survey to calibrate the universal fundamental plane. This calibration allows us to propose both (i) a parameterization to estimate the difficult-to-measure averaged dynamical mass-to-light ratio within Re, , once the internal kinematics, surface brightness, and effective radius are known; and (ii) a new, more robust dynamical mass proxy consistent with dynamical models within 0.09 dex. We reproduce the relation between the dynamical mass and the stellar mass in the inner regions of galaxies with lower scatter. We use the estimated from our analysis to explore the UFP with the MaNGA data set. We find that all galaxies, from spheroids to disks, follow the UFP with a scatter significantly smaller (0.05 dex) than the one reported for the fundamental plane (∼0.09 dex) and comparable with Tully–Fisher studies (∼0.05 dex), but for a wider range of galaxy types. We also confirm that spheroidal and spiral galaxies follow the same M⋆–S0.5 scaling relation, with lower scatter than the and ones, which is in agreement with previous studies found in the literature. We study the global star formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass (M *) correlation, and the spatially resolved SFR surface density (ΣSFR) versus stellar mass surface density (Σ*) correlation, in a sample of ∼2000 galaxies from the MaNGA MPL-5 survey. We classify galaxies and spatially resolved areas into star forming and retired according to their ionization processes. We confirm the existence of a star-forming main sequence (SFMS) for galaxies and spatially resolved areas, and show that they have the same nature, with the global as a consequence of the local one. The latter presents a bend below a limit Σ* value, ≈3 × 107 M |$\odot$|  kpc−2, which is not physical. Using only star-forming areas (SFAs) above this limit, a slope and a scatter of ≈1 and ≈0.27 dex are determined. The retired galaxies/areas strongly segregate from their respective SFMSs, by ∼−1.5 dex on average. We explore how the global/local SFMSs depend on galaxy morphology, finding that for star-forming galaxies and SFAs, there is a trend to lower values of star formation activity with earlier morphological types, which is more pronounced for the local SFMS. The morphology not only affects the global SFR due to the diminish of SFAs with earlier types, but also affects the local SF process. Our results suggest that the local SF at all radii is established by some universal mechanism partially modulated by morphology. Morphology seems to be connected to the slow aging and sharp decline of the SF process, and on its own it may depend on other properties as the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The star formation main sequence (SFMS) is a tight relation between the galaxy star formation rate (SFR) and its total stellar mass (M ⋆). Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are often considered as low-SFR outliers of this relation. We study, for the first time, the separated distribution in the SFR versus M ⋆ of bulges and discs of 49 ETGs from the CALIFA survey. This is achieved using c2d , a new code to perform spectrophotometric decompositions of integral field spectroscopy data cubes. Our results reflect that: (i) star formation always occurs in the disc component and not in bulges; (ii) star-forming discs in our ETGs are compatible with the SFMS defined by star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 0; (iii) the star formation is not confined to the outskirts of discs, but it is present at all radii (even where the bulge dominates the light); (iv) for a given mass, bulges exhibit lower sSFR than discs at all radii; and (v) we do not find a deficit of molecular gas in bulges with respect to discs for a given mass in our ETGs. We present optical photometry and spectroscopy of the Type II supernova ASASSN-14jb, together with Very Large Telescope (VLT) Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) integral field observations of its host galaxy and a nebular-phase spectrum. This supernova, in the nearby galaxy ESO 467-G051 (z = 0.006), was discovered and followed-up by the all-sky automated survey for supernovae (ASAS-SN). We obtained well-sampled las cumbres network (LCOGTN) BVgri and Swiftw2m1w1ubv optical, near-UV/optical light curves, and several optical spectra in the early photospheric phases. The transient ASASSN-14jb exploded ∼2 kpc above the star-forming disk of ESO 467-G051, an edge-on disk galaxy. The large projected distance from the disk of the supernova position and the non-detection of any H II region in a 1.4 kpc radius in projection are in conflict with the standard environment of core-collapse supernova progenitors and suggests the possible scenario that the progenitor received a kick in a binary interaction. We present analysis of the optical light curves and spectra, from which we derived a distance of 25 ± 2 Mpc using state-of-the-art empirical methods for Type II SNe, physical properties of the SN explosion (56Ni mass, explosion energy, and ejected mass), and properties of the progenitor; namely the progenitor radius, mass, and metallicity. Our analysis yields a 56Ni mass of 0.0210  ±  0.0025 M⊙, an explosion energy of ≈0.25 × 1051 ergs, and an ejected mass of ≈6 M⊙. We also constrained the progenitor radius to be R* = 580  ±  28 R⊙ which seems to be consistent with the sub-Solar metallicity of 0.3  ±  0.1 Z⊙ derived from the supernova Fe II λ5018 line. The nebular spectrum constrains strongly the progenitor mass to be in the range 10–12 M⊙. From the Spitzer data archive we detect ASASSN-14jb ≈330 days past explosion and we derived a total dust mass of 10−4 M⊙ from the 3.6 μm and 4.5 μm photometry. Using the FUV, NUV, BVgri,Ks, 3.6 μm, and 4.5 μm total magnitudes for the host galaxy, we fit stellar population synthesis models, which give an estimate of M* ≈ 1 × 109 M⊙, an age of 3.2 Gyr, and a SFR ≈0.07 M⊙ yr−1. We also discuss the low oxygen abundance of the host galaxy derived from the MUSE data, having an average of 12 + log(O/H) = 8.27+0.16−0.20 12 + log (O / H) = 8. 27 − 0.20 + 0.16 $ 12+\log\mathrm{(O/H)} = 8.27^{+0.16}_{-0.20} $ using the O3N2 diagnostic with strong line methods. We compared it with the supernova spectra, which is also consistent with a sub-Solar metallicity progenitor. Following recent observations of extraplanar H II regions in nearby edge-on galaxies, we derived the metallicity offset from the disk, being positive, but consistent with zero at 2σ, suggesting enrichment from disk outflows. We finally discuss the possible scenarios for the unusual environment for ASASSN-14jb and conclude that either the in-situ star formation or runaway scenario would imply a low-mass progenitor, agreeing with our estimate from the supernova nebular spectrum. Regardless of the true origin of ASASSN-14jb, we show that the detailed study of the environment roughly agree with the stronger constraints from the observation of the transient. We present a pilot study aimed to identify large-scale galaxy properties that could play a role in activating a quiescent nucleus. To do so, we compare the properties of two isolated nearby active galaxies and their non-active twins selected from the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey. This pilot sample includes two barred and two unbarred galaxies. We characterize the stellar and ionized gas kinematics and also their stellar content. We obtain simple kinematic models by fitting the full stellar and ionized gas velocity fields and just the approaching or receding sides. We find that the analysed active galaxies present lopsided discs and higher values of the global stellar angular momentum (λ R ) than their non-active twins. This could be indicating that the stellar discs of the AGN gained angular momentum from the inflowing gas that triggered the nuclear activity. The inflow of gas could have been produced by a twisted disc instability in the case of the unbarred AGN, and by the bar in the case of the barred AGN. In addition, we find that the central regions of the studied active galaxies show older stellar populations than their non-active twins. The next step is to statistically explore these galaxy properties in a larger sample of twin galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a study of the integrated properties of the 835 galaxies in the Calar-Alto Legacy Integral Field spectroscopy Area survey. To derive the main physical parameters of the galaxies we have fitted their UV-to-IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with sets of theoretical models using cigale. We perform a comparison of the integrated galaxy parameters derived from multiband SED fitting with those obtained from modelling the Integral Field Unit spectra and show the clear advantage of using the SED-derived star formation rates (SFRs). A detailed analysis of galaxies in the SFR/Mstar plane as a function of their properties reveals that quenching of star formation is caused by a combination of gas deficiency and the inefficiency of the existing gas to form new stars. Exploring the plausible mechanisms that could produce this effect, we find a strong correlation with galaxy morphology and the build-up of central bulge. On the other hand, the presence of Active Galactic Nucleus and/or a stellar bar, as well as the local environment have only temporal effects on the current star formation, a result also consistent with their model-derived star formation histories. We investigated the mass-to-light vs. color relations (MLCRs) derived from the spatially resolved star formation history of a sample of 452 galaxies observed with integral field spectroscopy in the CALIFA survey. We derived the stellar mass (M⋆) and the stellar mass surface density (Σ⋆) from the combination of full spectral fitting (using different sets of stellar population models) with observed and synthetic colors in optical broad bands. This method allows obtaining the radial structure of the mass-to-light ratio (M/L) at several wavelengths and studying the spatially resolved MLCRs. Our sample covers a wide range of Hubble types from Sc to E, with stellar masses ranging from M⋆ ∼ 108.4 to 1012 M⊙. The scatter in the MLCRs was studied as a function of morphology, stellar extinction, and emission line contribution to the colors. The effects of the initial mass function (IMF) and stellar population models in the MLCRs were also explored. Our main results are that (a) the M/L ratio has a negative radial gradient that is steeper within the central 1 half-light-radius (HLR). It is steeper in Sb-Sbc than in early-type galaxies. (b) The MLCRs between M/L and optical colors were derived with a scatter of ∼0.1 dex. The smallest dispersion was found for the combinations (i, g − r) and (R, B − R). Extinction and emission line contributions do not affect the scatter of these relations. Morphology does not produce a significant effect, except if the general relation is used for galaxies redder than (u − i) > 4 or bluer than (u − i)< 0. (c) The IMF has a large effect on MLCRs, as expected. The change from a Chabrier to a Salpeter IMF produces a median shift of ∼0.29 dex when mass loss from stellar evolution is also taken into account. Context. According to numerical simulations, stars are not always kept at their birth galactocentric distances but they have a tendency to migrate. The importance of this radial migration in shaping galactic light distributions is still unclear. However, if radial migration is indeed important, galaxies with different surface brightness (SB) profiles must display differences in their stellar population properties. Aims. We investigate the role of radial migration in the light distribution and radial stellar content by comparing the inner colour, age, and metallicity gradients for galaxies with different SB profiles. We define these inner parts, avoiding the bulge and bar regions and up to around three disc scale lengths (type I, pure exponential) or the break radius (type II, downbending; type III, upbending). Methods. We analysed 214 spiral galaxies from the CALIFA survey covering different SB profiles. We made use of GASP2D and SDSS data to characterise the light distribution and obtain colour profiles of these spiral galaxies. The stellar age and metallicity profiles were computed using a methodology based on full-spectrum fitting techniques (pPXF, GANDALF, and STECKMAP) to the Integral Field Spectroscopic CALIFA data. Results. The distributions of the colour, stellar age, and stellar metallicity gradients in the inner parts for galaxies displaying different SB profiles are unalike as suggested by Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling tests. We find a trend in which type II galaxies show the steepest profiles of all, type III show the shallowest, and type I display an intermediate behaviour. Conclusions. These results are consistent with a scenario in which radial migration is more efficient for type III galaxies than for type I systems, where type II galaxies present the lowest radial migration efficiency. In such a scenario, radial migration mixes the stellar content, thereby flattening the radial stellar properties and shaping different SB profiles. However, in light of these results we cannot further quantify the importance of radial migration in shaping spiral galaxies, and other processes, such as recent star formation or satellite accretion, might play a role. In this Paper, we describe how we use stellar dynamics information to constrain the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) in a sample of 27 early-type galaxies from the CALIFA survey.We obtain dynamical and stellar mass-to-light ratios, ♈dyn and ♈*, over a homogenous aperture of 0.5 Re.We use the constraint♈dyn ♈* to test two IMF shapes within the framework of the extended MILES stellar population models. We rule out a single power-law IMF shape for 75 per cent of the galaxies in our sample. Conversely, we find that a double power-law IMF shape with a varying high-mass end slope is compatible (within 1σ) with 95 per cent of the galaxies. We also show that dynamical and stellar IMF mismatch factors give consistent results for the systematic variation of the IMF in these galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a study of the H II regions in the galaxy NGC 6754 from a two pointing mosaic comprising 197 637 individual spectra, using integral field spectroscopy recently acquired with the MUSE instrument during its Science Verification program. The data cover the entire galaxy out to ~2 effective radii (re), sampling its morphological structures with unprecedented spatial resolution for a wide-field Integral Field Unit. A complete census of the Hii regions limited by the atmospheric seeing conditions was derived, comprising 396 individual ionized sources. This is one of the largest and most complete catalogues of Hii regions with spectroscopic information in a single galaxy. We use this catalogue to derive the radial abundance gradient in this SBb galaxy, finding a negative gradient with a slope consistent with the characteristic value for disk galaxies recently reported. The large number of Hii regions allows us to estimate the typical mixing scale length (rmix ~ 0.4 re), which sets strong constraints on the proposed mechanisms for metal mixing in disk galaxies, like radial movements associated with bars and spiral arms. We found evidence of an azimuthal variation in the oxygen abundance that may be connected with the radial migration. These results illustrate the unique capabilities of MUSE for the study of the enrichment mechanisms in Local Universe galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Ionized gas kinematics provide important clues to the dynamical structure of galaxies and hold constraints to the processes driving their evolution. Aims. The motivation of this work is to provide an overall characterization of the kinematic behavior of the ionized gas of the galaxies included in the Calar Alto Legacy Integral field Area (CALIFA), offering kinematic clues to potential users of the CALIFA survey for including kinematical criteria in their selection of targets for specific studies. From the first 200 galaxies observed by CALIFA survey in its two configurations, we present the two-dimensional kinematic view of the 177 galaxies satisfaying a gas content/detection threshold. Methods. After removing the stellar contribution, we used the cross-correlation technique to obtain the radial velocity of the dominant gaseous component for each spectrum in the CALIFA data cubes for different emission lines (namely, [O ii] λλ3726, 3729, [OIII] λλ4959, 5007, Hα+[N II] λλ6548, 6584, and [SII]λλ6716, 6730). The main kinematic parameters measured on the plane of the sky were directly derived from the radial velocities with no assumptions on the internal prevailing motions. Evidence of the presence of several gaseous components with different kinematics were detected by using [OIII] λλ4959, 5007 emission line profiles. Results. At the velocity resolution of CALIFA, most objects in the sample show regular velocity fields, although the ionized-gas kinematics are rarely consistent with simple coplanar circular motions. Thirty-five percent of the objects present evidence of a displacement between the photometric and kinematic centers larger than the original spaxel radii. Only 17% of the objects in the sample exhibit kinematic lopsidedness when comparing receding and approaching sides of the velocity fields, but most of them are interacting galaxies exhibiting nuclear activity (AGN or LINER). Early-type (E+S0) galaxies in the sample present clear photometric-kinematic misaligments. There is evidence of asymmetries in the emission line profiles in 117 out of the 177 analyzed galaxies, suggesting the presence of kinematically distinct gaseous components located at different distances from the optical nucleus. The kinematic decoupling between the dominant and secondary component/s suggested by the observed asymmetries in the profiles can be characterized by a limited set of parameters. Conclusions. This work constitutes the first determination of the ionized gas kinematics of the galaxies observed in the CALIFA survey. The derived velocity fields, the reported kinematic distortions/peculiarities and the identification of the presence of several gaseous components in different regions of the objects might be used as additional criteria for selecting galaxies for specific studies. Aims. In a companion paper we have presented many products derived from the application of the spectral synthesis code starlight to datacubes from the CALIFA survey, including 2D maps of stellar population properties (such as mean ages, mass, and extinction) and 1D averages in the temporal and spatial dimensions. Our goal here is to assess the uncertainties in these products. Methods. Uncertainties associated to noise and spectral shape calibration errors in the data and to the synthesis method were investigated by means of a suite of simulations, perturbing spectra and processing them through our analysis pipelines. The simulations used 1638 CALIFA spectra for NGC 2916, with perturbation amplitudes gauged in terms of the expected errors. A separate study was conducted to assess uncertainties related to the choice of evolutionary synthesis models, the key ingredient in the translation of spectroscopic information into stellar population properties. We compare the results obtained with three different sets of models: the traditional Bruzual & Charlot models, a preliminary update of them, and a combination of spectra derived from the Granada and MILES models. About 105 spectra from over 100 CALIFA galaxies were used in this comparison. Results. Noise and shape-related errors at the level expected for CALIFA propagate to uncertainties of 0.10-0.15 dex in stellar masses, mean ages, and metallicities. Uncertainties in AV increase from 0.06 mag for random noise to 0.16 mag for spectral shape errors. Higher-order products such as star formation histories are more uncertain than global properties, but still relatively stable. Owing to the large number statistics of datacubes, spatial averaging reduces uncertainties while preserving information on the history and structure of stellar populations. Radial profiles of global properties, and star formation histories averaged over different regions are much more stable than those obtained for individual spaxels. Uncertainties related to the choice of base models are larger than those associated with data and method. Except for metallicities, which come out very diIerent when fits are performed with the Bruzual & Charlot models, diferences in mean age, mass, and metallicity are of the order of 0.15 to 0.25 dex, and 0.1 mag for AV . Spectral residuals are of the order of 1% on average, but with systematic features of up to 4% amplitude. Context. Over the past decade, 3D optical spectroscopy has become the preferred tool for understanding the properties of galaxies and is now increasingly used to carry out galaxy surveys. Low redshift surveys include SAURON, DiskMass, ATLAS3D, PINGS, and VENGA. At redshifts above 0.7, surveys such as MASSIV, SINS, GLACE, and IMAGES have targeted the most luminous galaxies to study mainly their kinematic properties. The on-going CALIFA survey (z ~ 0.02) is the first of a series of upcoming integral field spectroscopy (IFS) surveys with large samples representative of the entire population of galaxies. Others include SAMI and MaNGA at lower redshift and the upcoming KMOS surveys at higher redshift. Given the importance of spatial scales in IFS surveys, the study of the effects of spatial resolution on the recovered parameters becomes important. Aims. We explore the capability of the CALIFA survey and a hypothetical higher redshift survey to reproduce the properties of a sample of objects observed with better spatial resolution at lower redshift. Methods. Using a sample of PINGS galaxies, we simulated observations at different redshifts. We then studied the behaviour of different parameters as the spatial resolution degrades with increasing redshift. Results. We show that at the CALIFA resolution, we are able to measure and map common observables in a galaxy study: the number and distribution of Hii regions (Ha flux structure), the gas metallicity (using the O3N2 method), the gas ionization properties (through the [Nii]/Ha and [O iii]/Hß line ratios), and the age of the underlying stellar population (using the D4000 index). This supports the aim of the survey to characterise the observable properties of galaxies in the Local Universe. Our analysis of simulated IFS data cubes at higher redshifts highlights the importance of the projected spatial scale per spaxel as the most important figure of merit in the design of an integral field survey. Aims. Fossil record methods based on spectral synthesis techniques have matured during the past decade, and their application to integrated galaxy spectra has fostered substantial advances in the understanding of galaxies and their evolution. Yet, because of the lack of spatial resolution, these studies are limited to a global view, providing no information about the internal physics of galaxies. Methods. Motivated by the CALIFA survey, which is gathering integral field spectroscopy (IFS) over the full optical extent of 600 galaxies, we have developed an end-to-end pipeline that: (i) partitions the observed datacube into Voronoi zones in order to, when necessary and taking due account of correlated errors, increase the signal-to-noise ratio; (ii) extracts rest-framed spectra, including propagated errors and bad-pixel flags; (iii) feeds the spectra into the starlight spectral synthesis code; (iv) packs the results for all galaxy zones into a single FITS or HDF5 file; (v) performs a series of post-processing operations, including zone-topixel image reconstruction and unpacking the spectral and stellar population properties derived by starlight into multidimensional time, metallicity, and spatial coordinates. This paper provides an illustrated description of the whole pipeline and its many products. Using data for the nearby spiral NGC 2916 as a showcase, we go through each of the steps involved and present a series of ways of visualizing and analyzing this manifold. These include 2D maps of properties such as the velocity field, stellar extinction, mean ages and metallicities, mass surface densities, and star formation rates on different time scales and normalized in different ways, as well as 1D averages in the temporal and spatial dimensions, which lead to evolutionary curves and radial profiles of physical properties. Projections of the stellar light and mass growth onto radius-age diagrams are introduced as a means of visualizing galaxy evolution in time and space simultaneously, something which can also be achieved in 3D with snapshot cuts through the (x, y, t) cubes. Results. The results vividly illustrate the richness both of the combination of IFS data with spectral synthesis and of the insights on galaxy physics provided by the variety of diagnostics and semi-empirical constraints obtained. Context. The study of nebulae around Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars gives us clues about the mass-loss history of massive stars, as well as about the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium (ISM). Aims. This work aims to search for the observational footprints of the interactions between the ISM and stellar winds in the WR nebula NGC6888 in order to understand its ionization structure, chemical composition, and kinematics. Methods. We have collected a set of integral field spectroscopy observations across NGC6888, obtained with PPAK in the optical range performing both 2D and 1D analyses. Attending to the 2D analysis in the northeast part of NGC 6888, we have generated maps of the extinction structure and electron density. We produced statistical frequency distributions of the radial velocity and diagnostic diagrams. Furthermore, we performed a thorough study of integrated spectra in nine regions over the whole nebula. Results. The 2D study has revealed two main behaviours. We have found that the spectra of a localized region to the southwest of this pointing can be represented well by shock models assuming n = 1000 cm-3, twice solar abundances, and shock velocities from 250 to 400 km s-1.With the 1D analysis we derived electron densities ranging from <100 to 360 cm-3. The electron temperature varies from ∼7700 K to ∼10 200 K. A strong variation of up to a factor 10 between different regions in the nitrogen abundance has been found: N/H appears lower than the solar abundance in those positions observed at the edges and very enhanced in the observed inner parts. Oxygen appears slightly underabundant with respect to solar value, whereas the helium abundance is found to be above it.We propose a scenario for the evolution of NGC6888 to explain the features observed. This scheme consists of a structure of multiple shells: i) an inner and broken shell with material from the interaction between the supergiant and WR shells, presenting an overabundance in N/H and a slight underabundance in O/H; ii) an outer shell very intense in [OIII]λ5007 Å corresponding to the main sequence bubble broken up as a consequence of the collision between supergiant and WR shells. Nitrogen and oxygen do not appear enhanced here, but helium appears enriched; iii) and finally it includes an external and faint shell that surrounds the whole nebula like a thin skin representing the early interaction between the winds from the main sequence star with the ISM for which typical circumstellar abundances are derived. Context. We carry out a detailed 2-D study of the ionised gas in the local universe galaxy UGC 9837. In nearby galaxies, like the galaxy in question here, the spatial distribution of the physical properties can be studied in detail, providing benchmarks for galaxy formation models. Aims. Our aim is to derive detailed and spatially resolved physical properties of the ionised gas of UGC 9837. In addition, we derive an integrated spectrum of the galaxy and study how varying spatial coverage affects the derived integrated properties. We also study how the same properties would be seen if the galaxy was placed at a higher redshift and observed as part of one of the high-z surveys. Methods. UGC 9837 was observed using the PMAS PPAK integral-field unit. The spectra were reduced and calibrated and the stellar and ionised components separated. Using strong emission line ratios of the ionised gas, the source of ionisation, the dust extinction, the star formation rate, the electron density, and the oxygen abundance derived from a total integrated spectrum, central integrated spectrum, and individual fibre spectra are studied. Finally, the same properties are studied in a spectrum whose spatial resolution is degraded to simulate high-z observations. Results. The spatial distribution of the ionised gas properties is consistent with inside-out growing scenario of galaxies. We also find that lack of spatial coverage would bias the results derived from the integrated spectrum leading, e.g., to an underestimation of ionisation and overestimation of metallicity, if only the centre of the galaxy was covered by the spectrum. Our simulation of high-z observations shows that part of the spatial information, such as dust and SFR distribution would be lost, while shallower gradients in metallicity and ionisation strength would be detected. We present a wide-field Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) survey on the nearby face-on Sbc galaxy NGC 628, comprising 11094 individual spectra, covering a nearly circular field-of-view of ∼6 arcmin in diameter, with a sampling of ∼2.7 arcsec per spectrum in the optical wavelength range (3700-7000 Å). This galaxy is part of the PPAK IFS Nearby Galaxies Survey (PINGS). To our knowledge, this is the widest spectroscopic survey ever made in a single nearby galaxy. A detailed flux calibration was applied, granting a spectrophotometric accuracy of ∼0.2 mag. The spectroscopic data were analysed both as a single integrated spectrum that characterizes the global properties of the galaxy and using each individual spectrum to determine the spatial variation of the stellar and ionized gas components. The spatial distribution of the luminosity-weighted ages and metallicities of the stellar populations was analysed. Using typical strong emission-line ratios we derived the integrated and 2D spatial distribution of the ionized gas, the dust content, star formation rate (SFR) and oxygen abundance. The age of the stellar populations shows a negative gradient from the inner (older) to the outer (younger) regions. We found an inversion of this gradient in the central ∼1 kpc region, where a somewhat younger stellar population is present within a ring at this radius. This structure is associated with a circumnuclear star-forming region at ∼500 pc, also found in similar spiral galaxies. From the study of the integrated and spatially resolved ionized gas, we found a moderate SFR of . The oxygen abundance shows a clear gradient of higher metallicity values from the inner part to the outer part of the galaxy, with a mean value of 12 + log(O/H) ∼ 8.7. At some specific regions of the galaxy, the spatially resolved distribution of the physical properties shows some level of structure, suggesting real point-to-point variations within an individual H region. Our results are consistent with an inside-out growth scheme, with stronger star formation at the outer regions, and with evolved stellar populations in the inner ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present and analyse integral-field observations of six type II QSOs with , selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Two of our sample are found to be surrounded by a nebula of warm ionized gas, with the largest nebula extending across 8 arcsec (40 kpc). Some regions of the extended nebulae show kinematics that are consistent with gravitational motion, while other regions show relatively perturbed kinematics: velocity shifts and linewidths too large to be readily explained by gravitational motion. We propose that a outflow is present in one of the galaxies. Possible mechanisms for triggering the outflow are discussed. In this object, we also find evidence for ionization both by shocks and by the radiation field of the AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the PPAK Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) Nearby Galaxies Survey (PINGS), a two-dimensional spectroscopic mosaicking of 17 nearby disc galaxies in the optical wavelength range. This project represents the first attempt to obtain continuous coverage spectra of the whole surface of a galaxy in the nearby Universe. The final data set comprises more than 50 000 individual spectra, covering in total an observed area of nearly 80 arcmin . The observations will be supplemented with broad-band and narrow-band imaging for those objects without publicly available images in order to maximize the scientific and archival values of the data set. In this paper we describe the main astrophysical issues to be addressed by the PINGS project, present the galaxy sample and explain the observing strategy, the data reduction process and all uncertainties involved. Additionally, we give some scientific highlights extracted from the first analysis of the PINGS sample. We present a study of the stellar populations and morphologies of galaxies in the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218. Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) observations were performed using PMAS in the PPAK mode covering a field of view of centred on the core of the cluster, in order to obtain spectroscopy of an unbiased flux-limited sample of cluster galaxies. 43 objects were detected in the IFS data, 31 of them with enough signal-to-noise ratio to derive the redshift, all of them brighter than . 28 are at the redshift of the cluster (17 with previously unknown redshift). Individual spectra of the cluster members were extracted and compared with single stellar population models to derive the luminosity-weighted ages and metallicities. In addition, deep Hubble Space Telescope ( HST)/ACS F475W-, F555W-, F625W- and F850LP-band images centred on the cluster core were obtained from the HST archive . A detailed morphological analysis of all the galaxies within the field of view of these images down to was performed classifying them as late-type, intermediate and early-type, on the basis of their Sérsic indices. The literature was scanned to look for spectroscopically confirmed cluster members located within the field of view of the ACS image. The final sample of 59 galaxies comprises our reported sample of 28 galaxies in the core, and 31 additional galaxies in the outer regions. In addition, multiband broad-band photometry was extracted from the literature for all objects. The morphologically segregated colour–magnitude diagram shows that the early-type galaxies cover the range of brighter and redder colours (the so-called ‘red sequence’). A large fraction of spiral galaxies (∼50 per cent) is found, most of them fainter than the limit of previous studies. They cover a wide range in colours, from blue colours typical of Butcher–Oemler galaxies to red colours similar to those of early-type galaxies. This result indicates that early-type galaxies are more massive and have older stellar populations, while late-type galaxies are less massive and have a wider range of stellar populations. The distribution of luminosity-weighted ages as a function of metallicities and luminosity-weighted masses, and the distribution of Sérsic indices as a function of the luminosity-weighted masses confirm these results. They in fact agree with a proposed two-step scenario for the evolution of galaxies in clusters, where the star formation is quenched first in the infalling spirals, after which a morphological transformation follows that requires larger time-scales. This scenario naturally explains the population faint late-type galaxies with old stellar populations observed in this cluster. In addition, an extremely blue merging galaxy system is found at the core, with the nominal redshift of the cluster. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CALIFA (Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area) is a 3D spectroscopic survey of 600 nearby galaxies that we are obtaining with PPaK@3.5m at Calar Alto (Sánchez et al. 2012; Husemann et al. 2012). This pioneer survey is providing valuable clues on how the mass and metallicity grow in the different galactic spatial sub-components (“bulge” and “disk”). Processed through spectral synthesis techniques, CALIFA datacubes allow us to, for the first time, spatially resolve the star formation history of galaxies (Cid Fernandes et al. 2012). The richness of this approach is already evident from the results obtained for the first ~ 100 galaxies of the sample (Pérez et al. 2012). We have found that galaxies grow inside-out, and that the growth rate depends on a galaxy's mass. Here, we present the radial variations of physical properties sorting galaxies by their morphological type (Figure 1). We have found a good correlation between the stellar mass surface density, stellar ages and metallicities and the Hubble type, but being the the early type spirals (Sa-Sbc) the galaxies with strong negative age and metallicity gradient from the bulge to the disk. We present: (i) a kinematic and morphological study of the giant Lyα nebula associated with the radio galaxy based on integral field spectroscopic Visible Multiobject Spectrograph (VIMOS) data from the Very Large Telescope (VLT), and (ii) a photometric study of the host (proto?) galaxy based on Spitzer Space Telescope data. The galaxy appears to be embedded in a giant (≳120 kpc) gas reservoir that surrounds it completely. The kinematic properties of the nebula suggest that it is a rotating structure, which would imply a lower limit to the dynamical mass of . An alternate scenario is that the gas is infalling. Such a process would be able to initiate and sustain significant central starburst activity, although it is likely to contribute with less than 10 per cent of the total stellar mass. The near- to mid-infrared spectral energy distribution of the radio galaxy suggests the existence of a reddened, , evolved stellar population of age ≳1.8 Gyr and mass .
