Satellite galaxies can be used to indicate the dynamic mass of galaxy groups and clusters. In this study, we apply the axisymmetric Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) modeling to satellite galaxies in 28 galaxy clusters selected from the TNG300-1 simulation with halo masses of log 10 M 200 / M ⊙ > 14.3 . If using true bound satellites as tracers, the best constrained total mass within the half-mass radius of satellites, M (< r half), and the virial mass, M 200, have average biases of −0.01 and 0.03 dex, with average scatters of 0.11 dex and 0.15 dex. If selecting companions in the redshift space with a line-of-sight depth of 2000 km s−1, the biases are −0.06 and 0.01 dex, while the scatters are 0.12 and 0.18 dex for M (< r half) and M 200. By comparing the best-fitting and actual density profiles, we find that ∼29% of the best-fitting density profiles show very good agreement with the truth, ∼32% display over/underestimates at most of the radial range with biased M (< r half), and 39% show under/overestimates in central regions and over/underestimates in the outskirts, with good constraints on M (< r half); yet most of the best constraints are still consistent with the true profiles within 1 σ statistical uncertainties for the three circumstances. Using a mock DESI Bright Galaxy Survey catalog with the effect of fiber incompleteness, we find DESI fiber assignments and the choice of flux limits barely modify the velocity dispersion profiles and are thus unlikely to affect the dynamical modeling outcomes. Our results show that with current and future deep spectroscopic surveys, JAM can be a powerful tool to constrain the underlying density profiles of individual massive galaxy clusters. Based on independent shear measurements using the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey/DR8 imaging data, we measure the weak lensing signals around isolated central galaxies (ICGs) from Sloan Digital Sky Survey/DR7 at z ∼ 0.1. The projected stellar mass density profiles of satellite galaxies are further deduced, using photometric sources from the Hyper Suprime-cam survey. The signals of ICGs + their extended stellar halos are taken from Wang et al. All measurements are compared with predictions by the IllustrisTNG300-1 simulation. We find, overall, a good agreement between observation and TNG300. In particular, a correction to the stellar mass of massive observed ICGs is applied based on the calibration of He et al., which brings a much better agreement with TNG300 predicted lensing signals at log 10 M * / M ⊙ > 11.1. In real observation, red ICGs are hosted by more massive dark matter halos and have more satellites and more extended stellar halos than blue ICGs at fixed stellar mass. However, in TNG300 there are more satellites around blue ICGs at fixed stellar mass, and the outer stellar halos of red and blue ICGs are similar. The stellar halos of TNG galaxies are more extended compared with real observed galaxies, especially for blue ICGs with log 10 M * / M ⊙ > 10.8. We find the same trend for TNG100 galaxies and for true halo central galaxies. The tensions between TNG and real galaxies indicate that satellite disruptions are stronger in TNG. In both TNG300 and observation, satellites approximately trace the underlying dark matter distribution beyond 0.1 R 200, but the fraction of total stellar mass in TNG300 does not show the same radial distribution as real galaxies. We propose a random forest (RF) machine learning approach to determine the accreted stellar mass fractions (f acc) of central galaxies, based on various dark matter halo and galaxy features. The RF is trained and tested using 2710 galaxies with stellar mass log10 M */M⊙ > 10.16 from the TNG100 simulation. Galaxy size is the most important individual feature when calculated in 3-dimensions, which becomes less important after accounting for observational effects. For smaller galaxies, the rankings for features related to merger histories increase. When an entire set of halo and galaxy features are used, the prediction is almost unbiased, with root-mean-square error (RMSE) of ∼0.068. A combination of up to three features with different types (galaxy size, merger history, and morphology) already saturates the power of prediction. If using observable features, the RMSE increases to ∼0.104, and a combined usage of stellar mass, galaxy size plus galaxy concentration achieves similar predictions. Lastly, when using galaxy density, velocity, and velocity dispersion profiles as features, which approximately represent the maximum amount of information extracted from galaxy images and velocity maps, the prediction is not improved much. Hence, the limiting precision of predicting f acc is ∼0.1 with observables, and the multicomponent decomposition of galaxy images should have similar or larger uncertainties. If the central black hole mass and the spin parameter of galaxies can be accurately measured in future observations, the RMSE is promising to be further decreased by ∼20 per cent. Using photometrically selected galaxies from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey, we measure the stellar-mass density profiles for satellite galaxies around isolated central galaxies (ICGs) from SDSS/DR7 at z ∼ 0.1. By stacking HSC images, we also measure the projected stellar-mass density profiles for ICGs and their stellar halos. The total mass distributions are further measured from HSC weak-lensing signals. ICGs dominate within ∼0.15 times the halo virial radius (0.15 R200). The stellar mass versus total mass fractions drop with the increase in projected distance up to ∼0.15 R200, beyond which they are less than 1% while staying almost constant. The integrated stellar mass in satellites is proportional to the virial mass of the host halo, M200, for ICGs more massive than 1010.5M⊙, i.e., M*,sat ∝ M200, whereas the relation between the stellar mass of ICGs + stellar halos and M200 is close to. Below 1010.5M⊙, the change in M200 is much slower with the decrease in M*,ICG+diffuse. At fixed stellar mass, red ICGs are hosted by more massive dark matter halos and have more satellites. At M200 ∼ 1012.7M⊙, both M*,sat and the fraction of stellar mass in satellites versus total stellar mass, fsat, tend to be marginally higher around blue ICGs. fsat increases with the increase in both M*,ICG+diffuse and M200, and scales more linearly with M200. We provide best-fitting relations to M200 versus M*,ICG+diffuse, M*,sat or M*,ICG+diffuse + M*,sat, and to fsat versus M200 or M*,ICG+diffuse, for red and blue ICGs separately. Using hydrodynamical simulations, we study how well the underlying gravitational potential of a galaxy cluster can be modelled dynamically with different types of tracers. In order to segregate different systematics and the effects of varying estimator performances, we first focus on applying a generic minimal assumption method (oPDF) to model the simulated haloes using the full 6D phase-space information. We show that the halo mass and concentration can be recovered in an ensemble unbiased way, with a stochastic bias that varies from halo to halo, mostly reflecting deviations from steady state in the tracer distribution. The typical systematic uncertainty is ∼0.17 dex in the virial mass and ∼0.17 dex in the concentration as well when dark matter (DM) particles are used as tracers. The dynamical state of satellite galaxies are close to that of DM particles, while intracluster stars are less in a steady state, resulting in an ∼0.26-dex systematic uncertainty in mass. Compared with galactic haloes hosting Milky-Way-like galaxies, cluster haloes show a larger stochastic bias in the recovered mass profiles. We also test the accuracy of using intracluster gas as a dynamical tracer modelled through a generalized hydrostatic equilibrium equation, and find a comparable systematic uncertainty in the estimated mass to that using DM. Lastly, we demonstrate that our conclusions are largely applicable to other steady-state dynamical models including the spherical Jeans equation, by quantitatively segregating their statistical efficiencies and robustness to systematics. We estimate the Milky Way (MW) halo properties using satellite kinematic data including the latest measurements from Gaia DR2. With a simulation-based 6D phase-space distribution function (DF) of satellite kinematics, we can infer halo properties efficiently and without bias, and handle the selection function and measurement errors rigorously in the Bayesian framework. Applying our DF from the EAGLE simulation to 28 satellites, we obtain an MW halo mass of and a concentration of with the prior based on the M–c relation. The inferred mass profile is consistent with previous measurements but with better precision and reliability due to the improved methodology and data. Potential improvement is illustrated by combining satellite data and stellar rotation curves. Using our EAGLE DF and best-fit MW potential, we provide much more precise estimates of the kinematics for those satellites with uncertain measurements. Compared to the EAGLE DF, which matches the observed satellite kinematics very well, the DF from the semi-analytical model based on the dark-matter-only simulation Millennium II (SAM-MII) over-represents satellites with small radii and velocities. We attribute this difference to less disruption of satellites with small pericenter distances in the SAM-MII simulation. By varying the disruption rate of such satellites in this simulation, we estimate a ∼5% scatter in the inferred MW halo mass among hydrodynamics-based simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a versatile and accurate method to estimate the halo mass and concentration from the kinematics of satellite galaxies. We construct the 6D phase-space distribution function of satellites from a cosmological simulation based on the similarity of internal dynamics for different halos. Within the Bayesian statistical framework, not only can we efficiently infer the halo mass and concentration, we can also treat various observational effects, including the selection function, incomplete data, and measurement errors, in a rigorous and straightforward manner. Through tests with mock samples, we show that our method is valid and accurate, as well as more precise than pure steady-state methods. It can constrain the halo mass to within ∼20% using only 20 tracers and has a small intrinsic uncertainty of ∼10%. We study the faint stellar halo of isolated central galaxies, by stacking galaxy images in the HSC survey and accounting for the residual sky background sampled with random points. The surface brightness profiles in HSC r band are measured for a wide range of galaxy stellar masses (9.2 < log10 M ∗/M⊙ < 11.4) and out to 120 kpc. Failing to account for the stellar halo below the noise level of individual images will lead to underestimates of the total luminosity by ≤15%. Splitting galaxies according to the concentration parameter of their light distributions, we find that the surface brightness profiles of low-concentration galaxies drop faster between 20 and 100 kpc than those of high-concentration galaxies. Albeit the large galaxy-to-galaxy scatter, we find a strong self-similarity of the stellar halo profiles. They show unified forms once the projected distance is scaled by the halo virial radius. The colour of galaxies is redder in the centre and bluer outside, with high-concentration galaxies having redder and more flattened colour profiles. There are indications of a colour minimum, beyond which the colour of the outer stellar halo turns red again. This colour minimum, however, is very sensitive to the completeness in masking satellite galaxies. We also examine the effect of the extended PSF in the measurement of the stellar halo, which is particularly important for low-mass or low-concentration galaxies. The PSF-corrected surface brightness profile can be measured down to ∼31  |$\mathrm{mag}\, \mathrm{arcsec}^{-2}$| at 3σ significance. PSF also slightly flattens the measured colour profiles. We use the Eighth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS/DR8) galaxy sample to study the radial distribution of satellite galaxies around isolated primaries, comparing to semi-analytic models of galaxy formation based on the Millennium and Millennium-II simulations. SDSS satellites behave differently around high- and low-mass primaries: those orbiting objects with M* > 1011 M⊙ are mostly red and are less concentrated towards their host than the inferred dark matter halo, an effect that is very pronounced for the few blue satellites. On the other hand, less massive primaries have steeper satellite profiles that agree quite well with the expected dark matter distribution and are dominated by blue satellites, even in the inner regions where strong environmental effects are expected. In fact, such effects appear to be strong only for primaries with M* > 1011 M⊙. This behaviour is not reproduced by current semi-analytic simulations, where satellite profiles always parallel those of the dark matter and satellite populations are predominantly red for primaries of all masses. The disagreement with SDSS suggests that environmental effects are too efficient in the models. Modifying the treatment of environmental and star formation processes can substantially increase the fraction of blue satellites, but their radial distribution remains significantly shallower than observed. It seems that most satellites of low-mass primaries can continue to form stars even after orbiting within their joint halo for 5 Gyr or more. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
