We present the first multifrequency analysis of the candidate ultrasteep spectrum radio halo in the galaxy cluster PLCKESZ G171.94−40.65, using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio telescope (400 MHz), and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (1–2 GHz) observations. Our radio data have been complemented with archival Chandra X-ray observations to provide a crucial insight into the complex intracluster medium physics, happening at large scales. We detect the radio halo emission to the extent of ∼1.5 Mpc at 400 MHz, significantly larger than previously reported, along with five tailed galaxies in the central region. We also report the discovery of an unknown diffuse source "U," at the cluster periphery, with an extent of 300 kpc. Using the available observations, we have found that the radio spectrum of the halo is well-fitted with a single power law, having a spectral index of −1.36 ± 0.05, indicating that it is not an ultrasteep spectrum radio halo. Our low-resolution (25″) resolved spectral map shows an overall uniform spectral index, with some patches of fluctuations. The X-ray and radio surface brightness are morphologically cospatial, with a slight extension along the northwest–southeast direction, seen in both maps. The radio and X-ray surface brightness indicates strong positive correlations, with sublinear correlation slopes (∼0.71). Aims. The clusters Abell 2061 and Abell 2067 in the Corona Borealis supercluster have been studied at different radio frequencies and are both known to host diffuse radio emission. The aim of this work is to investigate the radio emission between them, whose presence is suggested by low-resolution observations. Methods. We analysed deep LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) High Band Antenna (HBA) observations at 144 MHz to follow up on the possible inter-cluster filament suggested by previous 1.4 GHz observations. We investigated the radial profiles and the point-to-point surface-brightness correlation of the emission in Abell 2061 with radio and X-ray observations to describe the nature of the diffuse emission. Results. We report the detection of diffuse radio emission on an 800 kpc scale, which is more extended than previously known, reaching beyond the radio halo in Abell 2061 towards Abell 2067 and over the separation outside the two clusters R500 radii. We confirm the presence of a radio halo in A2061, while we do not find evidence of diffuse emission in Abell 2067. The surface-brightness profile from the centre of A2061 shows an excess of emission with respect to the azimuthally averaged radio halo profile and X-ray background. We explored three different dynamical scenarios to explain the nature of the diffuse emission. Additionally, we analysed a trail of emission of ∼760 kpc between the radio halo and radio relic in Abell 2061. Conclusions. This dynamically interacting, pre-merger system closely resembles the two other cluster pairs where radio bridges connecting the radio halos on Megaparsecs scales have been detected. The diffuse emission extends beyond each cluster R500 radius, but in this unique case the absence of the radio halo in Abell 2067 is likely the reason for the observed 'gap' between the two systems. However, the point-to-point correlation results are challenging to explain. The classification of the emission remains unclear, and detailed spectral analysis and further X-ray observations are required to understand the origin of the diffuse emission. Context. X-shaped radio galaxies (XRGs) are characterised by two pairs of misaligned lobes: active lobes hosting radio jets and the wings. None of the formation mechanisms proposed thus far are able to exhaustively reproduce the diverse features observed among XRGs. Emerging evidence has proposed the existence of sub-populations of XRGs forming via different processes. Aims. The brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in Abell 3670 (A3670) is a dumbbell system hosting the XRG MRC 2011-298. The morphological and spectral properties of this interesting XRG were first characterised based on Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) data at 1–10 GHz. In the present work, we follow up on MRC 2011-298 with the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) at 120–800 MHz to further constrain its properties and origin. Methods. We carried out a detailed spectral analysis sampling different spatial scales. Integrated radio spectra, spectral index maps, radio colour-colour diagrams, and radiative age maps of both the active lobes and prominent wings were employed to test the origin of the source. Results. We confirm a progressive spectral steepening from the lobes to the wings. The maximum radiative age of the source is ~80 Myr, with the wings being older than the lobes by ≳30 Myr in their outermost regions. Conclusions. The observed properties are in line with an abrupt reorientation of the jets by ~90 deg from the direction of the wings to their present position. This formation mechanism is further supported by the comparison with numerical simulations in the literature, which additionally highlight the role of hydrodynamic processes in the evolution of large wings such as those of MRC 2011-298. It is plausible that the coalescence of supermassive black holes could have triggered the spin-flip of the jets. Context. Abell 754 is a rich galaxy cluster at z = 0.0543 and is considered the prototype of a major cluster merger. As many dynamically unrelaxed systems, it hosts diffuse radio emission on megaparsec-scales. Extended synchrotron sources in the intra-cluster medium (ICM) are commonly interpreted as evidence that a fraction of the gravitational energy released during cluster mergers is dissipated into nonthermal components. Aims. Here, we aim to use new MeerKAT UHF- and L-band observations to study nonthermal phenomena in Abell 754. These data are complemented with archival XMM-Newton observations to investigate the resolved spectral properties of both the radio and X-ray cluster emission. Methods. For the first time, we employed the pipeline originally developed to calibrate LOFAR data to MeerKAT observations. This allowed us to perform a direction-dependent calibration and obtain highly sensitive radio images in UHF and L bands that capture the extended emission with unprecedented detail. By using a large XMM-Newton mosaic, we produced thermodynamic maps of the ICM. Results. Our analysis reveals that the radio halo in the cluster center is bounded by the well-known shock in the eastern direction. Furthermore, in the southwest periphery, we discover an extended radio source that we classify as a radio relic that is possibly tracing a shock driven by the squeezed gas compressed by the merger, outflowing in perpendicular directions. The low-luminosity of this relic appears compatible with direct acceleration of thermal pool electrons. We interpret the observed radio and X-ray features in the context of a major cluster merger with a nonzero impact parameter. Conclusions. Abell 754 is a remarkable galaxy cluster showcasing exceptional features associated with the ongoing merger event. The high quality of the new MeerKAT data motivates further work on this system. We study the radio continuum emission of four galaxies experiencing ram-pressure stripping in four clusters of the Shapley Supercluster at redshift |$z\sim 0.05$|⁠. Multiband (235–1367 MHz) radio data, complemented by integral-field spectroscopy, allow us to detect and analyse in detail the non-thermal component both in the galaxy discs and the radio continuum tails. Three galaxies present radio continuum tails that are tens of kiloparsecs long. By deriving the radio spectral index in the inner and outer tails and comparing our findings with the distribution of the extraplanar ionized gas and the results of N -body/hydrodynamical simulations, we demonstrate that these tails are caused by the ram pressure, which, together with the ionized gas, sweeps the magnetic field from the galaxy discs. We suggest that the radio continuum emission in these tails can be differently powered by (i) in situ star formation, (ii) relativistic electrons stripped from the disc, and (iii) shock excitation or a combination of them. All the ram-pressure-stripped galaxies are found in environments where cluster–cluster interactions occurred and/or are ongoing, thus strongly supporting the thesis that cluster and group collisions and mergers may locally increase the ram pressure and trigger hydrodynamical interactions between the intracluster medium and the interstellar medium of galaxies. Aims. Recent X-ray and Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) observations have detected thermal emission between early-stage merging galaxy clusters. The main purpose of this work is to investigate the properties of the non-thermal emission in the interacting cluster pairs Abell 0399-Abell 0401 and Abell 21-PSZ2 G114.9. Methods. These two unique cluster pairs have been found in an interacting state. In both cases, their connection along a filament is supported by an SZ effect detected by the Planck satellite and, in the special case of Abell 0399-Abell 0401, the presence of a radio bridge has been already confirmed by LOFAR observations at 140 MHz. Here, we analyse new high-sensitivity, wideband (250–500 MHz) uGMRT data of these two systems and describe an injection procedure to place limits on the spectrum of Abell 0399-Abell 0401 and on the radio emission between Abell 21-PSZ2 G114.9. Results. In both cases, the low-surface-brightness diffuse emission is not detected in Band 3 (250–500 MHz). For the A399-A401 pair, we are able to constrain the steep spectral index of the bridge emission to be α > 2.2 with a 95% confidence level between 140 MHz and 400 MHz. We also detect a small patch of the bridge with a flatter spectral index, which may suggest a variable spectral index distribution across the bridge area. For the A21-PSZ2 G114.9 pair, we are able to place an upper limit on the flux density of the bridge emission with two different methods, finding at the central frequency of 383 MHz a conservative value of fu1 < 260 mJy at a 95% confidence level, and a lower value of fu2 < 125 mJy at an 80% confidence level, based on visual inspection and a morphological criterion. Conclusions. Our work provides a constraint on the spectrum in the bridge A399-A401 that disfavours shock acceleration as the main mechanism for the radio emission. The methods that we propose for the limits on the radio emission in the A21-PSZ2 G114.9 system represent a first step towards a systematic study of these sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Main galaxy cluster in the Abell 781 system is undergoing a significant merger and accretion process with peripheral emission to the north and south-eastern flanks of the merging structure. Here we present a full polarimetric study of this field, using radio interferometric data taken at 21 and 92 cm with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), to a sensitivity better than any 21 cm (L band) observation to date. We detect evidence of extended low-level emission of 1.9 mJy associated with the Main cluster at 21 cm, although this detection necessitates further follow-up by modern instruments due to the limited resolution of the WSRT. Galaxy clusters are assembled via merging of smaller structures, in a process that generates shocks and turbulence in the intra cluster medium and produces radio diffuse emission in the form of halos and relics. The cluster pair A 399–A 401 represents a special case: both clusters host a radio halo. Recent Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) observations at 140 MHz revealed the presence of a radio bridge connecting the two clusters along with two relic candidates. These relics include one South of A 399 and the other in between the two clusters, in proximity of a shock front detected in X-ray observations. In this paper we present observations of the A 399–A 401 cluster pair at 1.7, 1.4, 1.2 GHz, and 346 MHz from the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). We detect the radio halo in the A 399 cluster at 346 MHz, extending up to ∼650 kpc and with a 125 ± 6 mJy flux density. Its spectral index between 140 MHz and 346 MHz is α = 1.75 ± 0.14. The two candidate relics are also seen at 346 MHz and we determine their spectral indices to be α = 1.10 ± 0.14 and α = 1.46 ± 0.14. The low surface brightness bridge connecting the two clusters is below the noise level at 346 MHz therefore we constrain the bridge average spectral index to be steep, i.e. α > 1.5 at 95 per cent confidence level. This result favours the scenario where dynamically-induced turbulence is a viable mechanism to reaccelerate a population of mildly relativistic particles and amplify magnetic fields on scales of a few Mpcs. We aim to carry out a radio study of the SoUthern Cluster sCale Extended Source Survey (SUCCESS) sample consisting of 20 massive (M500 > 5 × 1014 M⊙), nearby (redshift <0.3) and southern (−50° < δ < −30°) galaxy clusters detected by the Planck satellite and the South Pole Telescope. Here, we report targeted GMRT observations (325/610 MHz) for a subsample of nine clusters. We also use the first data release of MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey (1283 MHz) for five of these nine clusters. The properties of the mini-halo in RXC J0528.9-3927, a candidate mini-halo in A3322, the radio halo and candidate double relics in A3399, and the radio halo in RXC J0232.2-4420 are presented. We also report a detection of candidate radio relics at distances 1 and 1.9 Mpc from the centre of RXC J0232.2-4420. The southeast relic of A3399 is consistent with the radio power–mass scaling relation for radio relics, while the candidate relics around RXC J0232.2-4420 are outliers. This indicates an origin of the candidate relics near RXC J0232.2-4420 to be independent of this cluster and a cluster merger-shock origin for the relic in A3399. In this subsample of clusters, 1/9 hosts a radio halo and double relics, 1/9 hosts a radio halo and 2/9 host mini-haloes. The dynamical states based on X-ray morphology show that A3399 is a disturbed cluster; however, the radio halo cluster RXC J0232.2-4420 is relaxed, and the mini-halo clusters have intermediate morphologies, adding to the cases of the less commonly found associations. In this paper, we present results from a radio–optical study of the galaxy populations of the galaxy clusters Abell 1300 and MACS J1931.8−2634, a merger and a relaxed system respectively both located at z ∼ 0.3, aimed at finding evidence of merger-induced radio emission. Radio observations are taken at 1.28 GHz with the MeerKAT interferometer during its early-stage commissioning phase, and combined with archive optical data. We generated catalogues containing 107 and 162 radio sources in the A 1300 and MACS J1931.8−2634 cluster fields, respectively, above a 0.2 mJy threshold and within a 30 arcmin radius from the cluster centre (corresponding to 8.1 and 8.8 Mpc, respectively). By cross-correlating the radio and optical catalogues, and including spectroscopic information, nine and six sources were found to be cluster members and used to construct the radio luminosity functions, respectively, for both clusters. The comparison of the radio source catalogues between the two cluster fields leads to a marginal difference, with a 2σ statistical significance. We derived the radio luminosity function at 1.28 GHz in both clusters, in the power range of |$22.81 \lt \rm {log~\mathit{ P}_{1.28~GHz}~(W\,Hz^{-1})} \lt 25.95$|⁠ , and obtained that in A 1300 the radio luminosity function averaged over the full radio power interval is only 3.3 ± 1.9 times higher than the MACS J1931.8−2634 one, suggesting no statistical difference in their probability to host nuclear radio emission. We conclude that, at least for the two clusters studied here, the role of cluster mergers in affecting the statistical properties of the radio galaxy population is negligible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Giant radio galaxies (GRGs), with extended structures reaching hundreds of kpc, are among the most spectacular examples of ejection of relativistic plasma from supermassive black holes. In this work, third of a series, we present Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) images at 144 MHz, collected in the framework of the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2), for nine sources extracted from our sample of hard X-ray-selected GRGs (HXGRGs, i.e. from INTEGRAL /Imager on-Board the INTEGRAL Satellite and Swift /Burst Alert Telescope catalogues at >20 keV). Thanks to the resolution and sensitivity of LoTSS, we could probe the complex morphology of these GRGs, unveiling cases with diffuse (Mpc-scale) remnant emission, presence of faint off-axis wings, or a misaligned inner jet. In particular, for one source (B2 1144+35B), we could clearly detect a ∼300 kpc wide off-axis emission, in addition to an inner jet whose orientation is not aligned with the lobes axis. For another source (J1153.9+5848), a structure consistent with jet precession was revealed, appearing as an X-shaped morphology with relic lobes having an extension larger than the present ones, and with a different axis orientation. From an environment analysis, we found two sources showing an overdensity of cosmological neighbours, and a correspondent association with a galaxy cluster from catalogues. Finally, a comparison with radio-selected GRGs from LoTSS DR1 suggested that, on average, HXGRGs can grow to larger extents. These results highlight the importance of deep low-frequency observations to probe the evolution of radio galaxies, and ultimately estimate the duty cycle of their jets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio haloes and radio relics are diffuse synchrotron sources that extend over Mpc-scales and are found in a number of merger galaxy clusters. They are believed to form as a consequence of the energy that is dissipated by turbulence and shocks in the intracluster medium (ICM). However, the precise physical processes that generate these steep synchrotron spectrum sources are still poorly constrained. We present a new LOFAR observation of the double galaxy cluster Abell 1758. This system is composed of A1758N, a massive cluster hosting a known giant radio halo, and A1758S, which is a less massive cluster whose diffuse radio emission is confirmed here for the first time. Our observations have revealed a radio halo and a candidate radio relic in A1758S, and a suggestion of emission along the bridge connecting the two systems which deserves confirmation. We combined the LOFAR data with archival VLA and GMRT observations to constrain the spectral properties of the diffuse emission. We also analysed a deep archival Chandra observation and used this to provide evidence that A1758N and A1758S are in a pre-merger phase. The ICM temperature across the bridge that connects the two systems shows a jump which might indicate the presence of a transversal shock generated in the initial stage of the merger. Aims. The aim of this work is to analyse the radio properties of the massive and dynamically disturbed clusters Abell 1451 and Zwcl 0634.1+4750, especially focusing on the possible presence of di use emission. Methods. We present new Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) 320 MHz and Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) 1.5 GHz observations of these two clusters. Results. We found that both Abell 1451 and Zwcl 0634.1+4750 host a radio halo with a typical spectrum (α ~ 1-1:3). Similarly to a few other cases reported in the recent literature, these radio halos are significantly fainter in radio luminosity with respect to the current radio power-mass correlations and they are smaller than classical giant radio halos. These underluminous sources might contribute to elucidating the complex mechanisms of formation and evolution of radio halos. Furthermore, we detected a candidate radio relic at large distance from the cluster centre in Abell 1451 and a peculiar head-tail (HT) radio galaxy in Zwcl 0634.1+4750, which might be interacting with a shock front. In the local Universe, the growth of massive galaxy clusters mainly operates through the continuous accretion of group-scale systems. The infalling group in Abell 2142 is the poster child of such an accreting group, and as such, it is an ideal target to study the astrophysical processes induced by structure formation. We present the results of a deep (200 ks) observation of this structure with Chandra that highlights the complexity of this system in exquisite detail. In the core of the group, the spatial resolution of Chandra reveals a leading edge and complex AGN-induced activity. The morphology of the stripped gas tail appears straight in the innermost 250 kpc, suggesting that magnetic draping efficiently shields the gas from its surroundings. However, beyond ~300 kpc from the core, the tail flares and the morphology becomes strongly irregular, which could be explained by a breaking of the drape, for example, caused by turbulent motions. The power spectrum of surface-brightness fluctuations is relatively flat (P2D ∝ k-2.3), which indicates that thermal conduction is strongly inhibited even beyond the region where magnetic draping is effective. The amplitude of density fluctuations in the tail is consistent with a mild level of turbulence with a Mach number M3D ~ 0.1 - 0.25. Overall, our results show that the processes leading to the thermalization and mixing of the infalling gas are slow and relatively inefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The presence of megaparsec-scale radio haloes in galaxy clusters has already been established by many observations over the last two decades. The emerging explanation for the formation of these giant sources of diffuse synchrotron radio emission is that they trace turbulent regions in the intracluster medium, where particles are trapped and accelerated during cluster mergers. Our current observational knowledge is, however, mainly limited to massive systems. Here we present observations of a sample of 14 mass-selected galaxy clusters, i.e. M500 > 4×1014 M⊙, in the Southern hemisphere, aimed to study the occurrence of radio haloes in low-mass clusters and test the correlation between the radio halo power at 1.4 GHz P1.4 and the cluster mass M500. Our observations were performed with the 7-element Karoo Array Telescope at 1.86 GHz. We found three candidates to host diffuse cluster-scale emission and derived upper limits at the level of 0.6-1.9×1024 Watt Hz-1 for ~ 50 per cent of the clusters in the sample, significantly increasing the number of clusters with radio halo information in the considered mass range. Context. Giant radio halos (RH) are di use Mpc-scale synchrotron sources detected in some massive and merging galaxy clusters. An unbiased study of the statistical properties of RHs is crucial to constraining their origin and evolution. Aims. We investigate the occurrence of RHs and its dependence on the cluster mass in a Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ)-selected sample of galaxy clusters, which is nearly a mass-selected sample. Moreover, we analyse the connection between RHs and merging clusters. Methods. We selected from the Planck SZ catalogue clusters with M⩾6×1014Mat z = 0:08-0:33 and we searched for the presence of RHs using the NVSS for z < 0:2 and the GMRT RH survey (GRHS) and its extension (EGRHS) for 0:2 < z < 0:33. We used archival Chandra X-ray data to derive information on the dynamical status of the clusters. Results. We confirm that RH clusters are merging systems while the majority of clusters without RH are relaxed, thus supporting the idea that mergers play a fundamental role in the generation of RHs. We find evidence for an increase in the fraction of clusters with RHs with the cluster mass and this is in line with expectations derived on the basis of the turbulence re-acceleration scenario. The intra-cluster medium contains cosmic rays and magnetic fields that are manifested through the large scale synchrotron sources, termed radio haloes, relics, and mini-haloes. The Extended Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) Radio Halo Survey (EGRHS) is an extension of the GMRT Radio Halo Survey (GRHS) designed to search for radio haloes using GMRT 610/235 MHz observations. The GRHS and EGRHS consists of 64 clusters in the redshift range 0.2-0.4 that have an X-ray luminosity larger than 5 × 1044 erg s-1 in the 0.1-2.4 keV band and declination, δ > -31° in the REFLEX and eBCS X-ray cluster catalogues. In this second paper in the series, GMRT 610/235 MHz data on the last batch of 11 galaxy clusters and the statistical analysis of the full sample are presented. A new mini-halo in RXJ2129.6+0005 and candidate diffuse sources in Z5247, A2552, and Z1953 have been discovered. A unique feature of this survey are the upper limits on the detections of 1 Mpc sized radio haloes; 4 new are presented here, making a total of 31 in the survey. Of the sample, 58 clusters with adequately sensitive radio information were used to obtain the most accurate occurrence fractions so far. The occurrence fractions of radio haloes, mini-haloes and relics in our sample are ∼22%, ∼16% and ∼5%, respectively. The P1.4 GHz - LX diagrams for the radio haloes and mini-haloes are presented. The morphological estimators - centroid shift (w), concentration parameter (c), and power ratios (P3/P0) derived from the Chandra X-ray images - are used as proxies for the dynamical states of the GRHS and EGRHS clusters. The clusters with radio haloes and mini-haloes occupy distinct quadrants in the c-w, c-P3/P0 and w-P3/P0 planes, corresponding to the more and less morphological disturbance, respectively. We report the discovery of large-scale diffuse radio emission south-east of the galaxy cluster MACS J0520.7-1328, detected through high-sensitivity Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope 323 MHz observations. This emission is dominated by an elongated diffuse radio source and surrounded by other features of lower surface brightness. Patches of these faint sources are marginally detected in a 1.4 GHz image obtained through a re-analysis of archival NVSS data. Interestingly, the elongated radio source coincides with a previously unclassified extended X-ray source. We perform a multi-wavelength analysis based on archival infrared, optical, and X-ray Chandra data. We find that this source is a low-temperature (~3.6 keV) cluster of galaxies, with indications of a disturbed dynamical state, located at a redshift that is consistent with the one of the main galaxy cluster MACS J0520.7-132 (z = 0:336). We suggest that the diffuse radio emission is associated to non-thermal components in the intracluster and intergalactic medium in and around the newly detected cluster.We are planning deeper multi-wavelength and multi-frequency radio observations to accurately investigate the dynamical scenario of the two clusters and to address the nature of the complex radio emission more precisely. Many galaxy clusters host megaparsec-scale radio halos, generated by ultrarelativistic electrons in the magnetized intracluster medium. Correlations between the synchrotron power of radio halos and the thermal properties of the hosting clusters were established in the last decade, including the connection between the presence of a halo and cluster mergers. The X-ray luminosity and redshift-limited Extended GMRT Radio Halo Survey provides a rich and unique dataset for statistical studies of the halos. We uniformly analyze the radio and X-ray data for the GMRT cluster sample, and use the new Planck Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) catalog to revisit the correlations between the power of radio halos and the thermal properties of galaxy clusters. We find that the radio power at 1.4 GHz scales with the cluster X-ray (0.1-2.4 keV) luminosity computed within R500 as . Our bigger and more homogenous sample confirms that the X-ray luminous (L500 > 5 × 1044 erg s–1) clusters branch into two populations—radio halos lie on the correlation, while clusters without radio halos have their radio upper limits well below that correlation. This bimodality remains if we excise cool cores from the X-ray luminosities. We also find that P1.4 scales with the cluster integrated SZ signal within R500, measured by Planck, as , in line with previous findings. However, contrary to previous studies that were limited by incompleteness and small sample size, we find that “SZ-luminous” Y500 > 6 × 10–5 Mpc2 clusters show a bimodal behavior for the presence of radio halos, similar to that in the radio-X-ray diagram. Bimodality of both correlations can be traced to clusters dynamics, with radio halos found exclusively in merging clusters. These results confirm the key role of mergers for the origin of giant radio halos, suggesting that they trigger the relativistic particle acceleration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. We study the interplay between the radio emission associated with the dominant galaxy in clusters and the properties of the surrounding intracluster medium on the basis of its X-ray emission. Aims. Previous radio observations of the galaxy cluster A3560, located in the Shapley Concentration core, revealed complex radio emission associated with the brightest cluster member. To understand the origin of this radio emission we performed a detailed multiwavelength study with high-quality proprietary data in the radio and X-ray bands and by means of optical data available in the literature. Methods. We observed the cluster with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, the Very Large Array, and the Australia Telescope Compact array at 240 and 610 MHz, 1.28, 1.4, 2.3, 4.8, and 8.4 GHz, and performed a detailed morphological and spectral study of the radio emission associated with the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG). Furthermore, we observed the cluster with the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories to derive the properties of the intracluster gas. Finally, we made use of literature data to obtain the bidimensional distribution of the galaxies in the cluster. Results. The radio emission, associated with the north-eastern nucleus of the dumb-bell BCG, is the result of two components: an active radio galaxy, with jets and lobes, plus aged diffuse emission, which is not refurbished with new electrons at present. Our Chandra data show that the radio active nucleus of the BCG has extended X-ray emission, which we classify as a low-luminosity corona. A residual image of the XMM-Newton brightness distribution shows a spiral-like feature, which we interpret as the signature of gas sloshing. A sub-group is clearly visible in the surface brightness residual map, and this is also supported by the XMM-Newton temperature analysis. The optical bidimensional analysis shows substructure in A3560. A galaxy clump was detected at the location of the X-ray sub-group, and another group is present south of the cluster core, in the region where the spiral-like feature was detected. The aged part of the radio emission closely follows the spiral pattern of the X-ray residual brightness distribution, while the two active radio lobes are bent in a completely different direction. We conclude that the complex radio emission associated with the cluster BCG is the result of a minor merger event in A3560. The aged diffuse emission is strongly affected by the sloshing motion in the intracluster gas and most likely bears information on the trajectory of the cluster BCG during the dynamical evolution of the cluster. On the other hand, the bent jets and lobes of the current radio AGN activity may reflect a complex gas velocity field in the innermost cluster regions and/or sloshing-induced oscillations in the motion of the cD galaxy. Context. A fraction of galaxy clusters host diffuse radio sources called radio halos, radio relics and mini-halos. These are associated with the relativistic electrons and magnetic fields present on ~Mpc scales in the intra-cluster medium. Aims. We aim to carry out a systematic radio survey of all luminous galaxy clusters selected from the REFLEX and eBCS X-ray catalogues with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, to understand the statistical properties of the diffuse radio emission in galaxy clusters. Methods. We present the sample and first results from the Extended GMRT Radio Halo Survey (EGRHS), which is an extension of the GMRT Radio Halo Survey (GRHS, Venturi et al. 2007, 2008). Analysis of radio data at 610/ 235/ 325MHz on 12 galaxy clusters are presented. Results. We report the detection of a newly discovered mini-halo in the cluster RXJ1532.9+3021 at 610 MHz. The presence of a small-scale relic (~200 kpc) is suspected in the cluster Z348. We do not detect cluster-scale diffuse emission in 11 clusters. Robust upper limits on the detection of radio halo of size of 1 Mpc are determined. We also present upper limits on the detections of minihalos in a sub-sample of cool-core clusters. The upper limits for radio halos and mini-halos are plotted in the radio power- X-ray luminosity plane and the correlations are discussed. Diffuse extended emission that is not related to the target clusters, but detected as by-products in the sensitive images of two of the cluster fields (A689 and RXJ0439.0+0715) is also reported. Conclusions. Based on the information about the presence of radio halos (or upper limits), available on 48 clusters out of the total sample of 67 clusters (EGRHS+GRHS), we find that 23±7% of the clusters host radio halos. The radio halo fraction rises to 31±11%, when only the clusters with X-ray luminosities >8 × 1044 erg s-1 are considered. Mini-halos are found in ~50% of cool-core clusters. A qualitative examination of the X-ray images of the clusters with no diffuse radio emission indicates that a majority of these clusters do not show extreme dynamical disturbances and supports the idea that mergers play an important role in generating radio halos and relics. Aims. We present new high-sensitivity 153 MHz Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope follow-up observations of the diffuse steepspectrum cluster radio sources in the galaxy clusters Abell 521, Abell 697, and Abell 1682. Abell 521 hosts a relic, and together with Abell 697 it also hosts a giant very steep-spectrum radio halo. Abell 1682 is a more complex system with candidate steep spectrum diffuse emission. Methods. We imaged the di use radio emission in these clusters at 153 MHz, and provided flux density measurements of all sources at this frequency. Our new flux density measurements, coupled with the existing data at higher frequencies, allowed us to study the total spectrum of the halos and relic over at least one order of magnitude in frequency. Results. Our images confirm the very steep "diffuse component" in Abell 1682. We found that the spectrum of the relic in Abell 521 can be fitted by a single power-law with α = 1:45 ± 0:02 from 153 MHz to 5 GHz. Moreover, we confirm that the halos in Abell 521 and Abell 697 have a very steep spectrum , with α = 1:8-1:9 and α = 1:52 ± 0:05, respectively. Even including of the 153 MHz flux density information, it is impossible to distinguish between power-law and curved spectra, as derived from homogeneous turbulent re-acceleration. The latter are favoured on the basis of simple energetic arguments, and we expect that LOFAR will finally unveil the spectral shape of radio halos below 100 MHz, thus providing clues on their origin. Aims. To gain insight into the origin of diffuse radio sources in galaxy clusters and their connection with cluster merger processes, we performed GMRT low frequency observations of the radio haloes, relics and new candidates belonging to the GMRT radio Halo cluster sample first observed at 610 MHz. Our main aim was to investigate their observational properties and integrated spectra at frequencies below 610 MHz. Methods. High sensitivity imaging was performed using the GMRT at 325 MHz and 240 MHz. The properties of the diffuse emission in each cluster were compared to our 610 MHz images and/or literature information available at other frequencies, in order to derive the integrated spectra over a wide frequency range. Results. Cluster radio haloes form a composite class in terms of spectral properties. Beyond the classical radio haloes, whose spectral index α is in the range ∼1.2 ÷ 1.3 (S ∝ v-α), we found sources with α ∼ 1.6 ÷ 1.9. This result supports the idea that the spectra of the radiating particles in radio haloes is not universal and that inefficient mechanisms of particle acceleration are responsible for their origin. We also found a variety of brightness distributions, i.e. both centrally peaked and clumpy haloes. Even though the thermal and relativistic plasma tend to occupy the same cluster volume, in some cases a positional shift between the radio and X-ray peaks of emission is evident. Our observations also revealed diffuse cluster sources that cannot be easily classified as either haloes or relics. New candidate relics were found in A1300 and in A1682, and in some clusters "bridges" of radio emission have been detected, connecting the relic and radio halo emission. Finally, by combining our new data with information in the literature, we derived the Log Lx - Log P325 MHz correlation for radio haloes, and investigated the possible correlation of the spectral index of radio haloes with the temperature of the intracluster medium. High sensitivity observations of radio halos in galaxy clusters at frequencies ν ≤ 330 MHz are still relatively rare, and very little is known compared to the classical 1.4 GHz images. The few radio halos imaged down to 150-240 MHz show a considerable spread in size, morphology and spectral properties. All clusters belonging to the GMRT Radio Halo Survey with detected or candidate cluster-scale diffuse emission have been imaged at 325 MHz with the GMRT. Few of them were also observed with the GMRT at 240 MHz and 150 MHz. For A 1682, imaging is particularly challenging due to the presence of strong and extended radio galaxies at the center. Our data analysis suggests that thew radio galaxies are superposed to very low surface brightness radio emission extended on the cluster scale, which we present here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We discuss the statistical properties of the radio halo population in galaxy clusters. Radio bi-modality is observed in galaxy clusters: a fraction of clusters host giant radio halos while a majority of clusters do not show evidence of diffuse cluster-scale radio emission. The radio bi-modality has a correspondence in terms of dynamical state of the hosting clusters showing that merging clusters host radio halos and follow the well-known radio-X-ray correlation, while more relaxed clusters do not host radio halos and populate a region well separated from that correlation. These evidences can be understood in the framework of a scenario where merger-driven turbulence re-accelerate the radio emitting electrons. Clusters of galaxies are the largest gravitationally bound objects in the Universe, containing about 1015 solar masses of hot (108 K) gas, galaxies and dark matter in a typical volume of 10 Mpc3. Magnetic fields and relativistic particles are mixed with the gas as revealed by giant ‘radio haloes’, which arise from diffuse, megaparsec-scale synchrotron radiation at cluster centre. Radio haloes require that the emitting electrons are accelerated in situ (by turbulence), or are injected (as secondary particles) by proton collisions into the intergalactic medium. They are found only in a fraction of massive clusters that have complex dynamics, which suggests a connection between these mechanisms and cluster mergers. Here we report a radio halo at low frequencies associated with the merging cluster Abell 521. This halo has an extremely steep radio spectrum, which implies a high frequency cut-off; this makes the halo difficult to detect with observations at 1.4 GHz (the frequency at which all other known radio haloes have been best studied). The spectrum of the halo is inconsistent with a secondary origin of the relativistic electrons, but instead supports turbulent acceleration, which suggests that many radio haloes in the Universe should emit mainly at low frequencies. Abstract: We present high sensitivity radio observations of the merging cluster A 521, at a mean redshift z =0.247. The observations were carried out with the GMRT at 610MHz and cover a region of ∼1 square degree, with a sensitivity limit of 1σ =35μJyb−1. The most relevant result of these observations is the presence of a radio relic at the cluster periphery, at the edge of a region where group infalling into the main cluster is taking place. Thanks to the wealth of information available in the literature in the optical and X-ray bands, a multi-band study of the relic and its surroundings was performed. Our analysis is suggestive of a connection between this source and the complex ongoing merger in the A 521 region. The relic might be “revived’ fossil radio plasma through adiabatic compression of the magnetic field or shock re-acceleration due to the merger events. We also briefly discussed the possibility that this source is the result of induced ram pressure stripping of radio lobes associated with the nearby cluster radio galaxy J0454–1016a. Allowing for the large uncertainties due to the small statistics, the number of radio emitting early-type galaxies found in A 521 is consistent with the expectations from the standard radio luminosity function for local (z ⩽0.09) cluster ellipticals. We report and discuss the results of a 22-cm radio survey carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) covering the A3528 complex, a chain formed by the merging ACO clusters A3528–A3530–A3532, located in the central region of the Shapley Concentration. Simultaneous 13-cm observations are also presented. Our final catalogue includes a total of 106 radio sources above the flux density limit of 0.8 mJy. By cross-correlation with optical and spectroscopic catalogues we found 32 optical counterparts, nine of them belonging to the A3528 complex. We explored the effects of cluster mergers on the radio emission properties of radio galaxies by means of the radio luminosity function (RLF) and radio source counts. We found that the radio source counts are consistent with the background counts, as already found for the A3558 complex. The RLF for this complex is consistent, in both shape and normalization, with the general cluster luminosity function for early-type galaxies derived by Ledlow & Owen. This result is different from the one we obtained for the A3558 merging complex, the RLF of which is significantly lower than that derived by Ledlow & Owen. We propose that the different stage of the merger is responsible for the different RLFs in the two cluster complexes in the core of the Shapley Concentration. The early stage of merger for the A3528 complex, proposed by many authors, may not yet have affected the radio properties of cluster galaxies, while in the more much advanced merger in the A3558 region we actually see the effects of this process on the radio emission. We present the results of a 22-cm radio survey carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) covering the A3558 complex, a chain formed by the merging ACO clusters A3556–A3558–A3562 and the two groups SC 1327-312 and SC 1323-313, located in the central region of the Shapley Concentration. The purpose of our survey is to study the effects of cluster mergers on the statistical properties of radio galaxies and to investigate the connection between mergers and the presence of radio haloes and relic sources. We found that the radio source counts in the A3558 complex are consistent with the background source counts. The much higher optical density compared with the background is not reflected as a higher density of radio sources. Furthermore, we found that no correlation exists between the local density and the radio source power, and that steep-spectrum radio galaxies are not segregated in denser optical regions. The radio luminosity function for elliptical and S0 galaxies is significantly lower than for cluster early-type galaxies and for those not selected to be in clusters at radio powers log P[sub 1.4]&gsim;22.5, implying that the probability of a galaxy becoming a radio source above this power limit is lower in the Shapley Concentration compared with any other environment. Possible explanations will be presented. The detection of a head–tail source in the centre of A3562, coupled with careful inspection of the 20-cm NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and of 36-cm MOST observations, allowed us to spot two extended sources in the region between A3562 and SC 1329-313, i.e. a candidate radio halo at the centre of A3562 and low brightness extended emission around a 14.96-mag Shapley galaxy. The relation between these two extended galaxies and the ongoing group merger in this region of the Shapley Concentration are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
