Migration or the movement of people from one region to another has been going on for centuries. At the same time, educational migration is a relatively new form of migration, whose roots go back to the time when the countries of Asia and Africa were under colonial rule. A limited number of young people were selected to study in the higher educational institutions of the cities of the Empire, with the aim of their further work in the administrative centers of the colonies. Often, studying abroad is seen as a step towards migration in the future. International students, especially from developing countries, often stay in the host country after graduation. A foreign degree is often seen as an investment in finding a job after graduation, either in the host country or at home. Many host countries are interested in hiring talented foreign young people who have graduated from their universities. The article examines the dynamics of educational migration of Chinese students and the impact of the threat of the spread of the "coronavirus" on student migration from China. China is one of the leading countries that send students to study abroad. By the end of the last decade, the number of Chinese students abroad had become the largest group of international students in the world. The coronavirus outbreak has had a major impact on the mobility of international students. Australia, New Zealand, the US and Singapore were among the countries that have banned foreigners from leaving China since early February 2020, while thousands of Chinese students have returned to China.

Russia-China relations are a major research focus in international relations, yet few studies have so far addressed the issue of how the two nations view each other. This study seeks to contribute to closing this gap by focusing on how college-age millennials perceive the counterpart country. We have selected students who have had experience studying abroad, namely Chinese students who have studied in Russia and Russian students who have studied in China. Our findings are based on the analysis of 150 in-depth qualitative narrative interviews conducted with Chinese and Russian students (75 in each group). The study demonstrates that ethnocentric stereotypes prevail and both groups engage in cultural ‘othering’. Meanwhile, students from both countries perceive Russian President Vladimir Putin as a central determining factor in shaping Russia-China relations.

This constructivist grounded theory study unpacks how Chinese youth in Canada navigate and negotiate their cultural identities. Participants aged 16 to 24 years ( N = 22) were invited to provide a biographic account of where they were born and raised, the social contexts they interacted with, and how they grappled with their cultural identities growing up. Despite noting the differences between Chinese and Canadian cultures, participants found the concepts of culture elusive and questioned the categorical notion of culture. They indicated their cultural identity as being “in-between,” and their identity development as an ongoing, nonlinear process, involving a constant exchange between them and their environments. Study results highlight the fluid and nonstatic nature of cultural identity development in the context of immigration.

This article analyzes the issues of identity and social integration of Chinese youth in the Marche region. The focus on these two themes arises from the recent increase in the number of Chinese students in schools in this region. This change points to a need to study an unexplored phenomenon. In this regard, the intention of this contribution is, on the one hand, to observe the dynamics related to social integration of these young people and to understand how they navigate their multiple identities, and, on the other hand, to provide guidance for future research as well as useful tools to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for them to live in. Following a review of the literature, this article analyzes research results regarding data collected from 198 young people and 21 teachers, and concludes with insights into the identity and social integration problems confronting Chinese youth in the region.

This is a sociological analysis of empirical data regarding the alleged rising nationalism in contemporary China. Different from most of the studies of Chinese nationalism with a focus on the official and elite alike, as well as eye-catching nationalistic scenes, such as, pro-China demonstrations, this study adopts a micro-sociological approach and looks into how the forefront of China’s rising nationalism, the Chinese youth, engages with notions of nation and nationalism, and when, if at all, such notions become salient to them. Through this investigation, this article finds that the nation is not something students self-consciously engage themselves with between times of overt ‘hot’ nationalism display. So far from being fervent nationalists as has been suggested by some based on eye-catching nationalistic scenes, the forefront of China’s rising nationalism, the Chinese youth, neither actively (self-consciously) engages with nation and nationalism nor do they advance these to the highest political value as fervent nationalists do. Therefore, it is the contention of this article that the usual portrayal of a rising Chinese nationalism based on eye-catching nationalistic scenes overly exaggerates the degree to which the nation and nationalism are seriously and actively engaged by the Chinese people, especially the young Chinese who are supposed to be the most active social segment of the rising nationalism.

There are no cognitive studies of love conducted in an Asian culture. Our study is the first to probe the cognitive qualities that urban Chinese youth associate with what it means to be in love. To this end, we build on de Munck et al.’s pioneering studies in two European cultures (Russia, Lithuanian) and in the United States. Expanding on their study, we used a similar questionnaire that also includes additional questions designed to probe the youth of urban China’s perception and understanding of romantic love as an emotional and psychological force. We found that Chinese youths’ responses are similar to the Euro-American five core findings that all individuals, regardless of gender, experience when “in love.” These core attributes are as follows: “I will do anything for the person I love” (or altruism), “I constantly think about the person I am in love with” (or intrusive thinking), “romantic love is the supreme happiness of life” (or self-actualization), my “love makes my partner stronger and a better person,” (or emotional fulfillment), and “sexual attraction is necessary for love” (biology).

This chapter adopts a generational angle to explore the changing identity of Chinese youth towards love and intimacy by looking at a group of participants from the parents’ generation. As a historical construct, the identity of Chinese youth on one hand is linked with the previous generations, who are likely to influence the younger generation with traditional values. On the other hand, the fast-changing socio-economic environment in the post-reform era has greatly influenced Chinese youth born in the early period of the economic reform era, who hold a very different identity compared to members of their parents’ generation.

Objective - This study considers Chinese youth cinema as a historical object that represents the gamut of social practices and styles of production. Methodology/Technique - The authors examine the historical development of young people for tracing how different social and historical contexts interpret the Chinese young people's world. Findings - The youth films produced in the major Chinese regions—Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong—illustrate how much social practices dominated the film content and style. For instance, youth genre in Hong Kong, once prevalent in the Cantonese cinema of the mid and late 1960s, blended musical and melodrama by dormant with the rise of martial art films. Novelty - This study attempts to elaborate some films featuring young people in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and to review the histories of youth cinema in these Chinese regions. The Chinese youth film outlines how, in Chinese communities, the category of youth historically functions as a significant site of ideological inscription that displays its struggles towards an idealized future. Tracing the rise and demise of Goethe’s Werther as an icon of the New Culture Movement, Hoefle for the first time analyzes the Chinese “Werther fever” of the 1920s through the lens of gender. She argues that Werther’s uncontrolled emotionality dangerously trespassed both traditional Chinese concepts of masculinity, wen (cultural attainment) and wu (martial valor), and thus represented a liberating counter-image that needed to be contained. First replaced by female Werther figures, Chinese writers of the 1930s harshly parodied the sentimental man. Re-reading two of the most influential modern Chinese novels, Mao Dun’s Midnight (Ziye) and Ba Jin’s Family (Jia), Hoefle concludes that their repression of Werther’s masculinity sheds light on a more complex and even paradox process of negotiating gender roles at a historical crossroads.

The children of Chinese immigrants in the U.S. have been held up as exemplars for their academic prowess and their high levels of educational attainment. Although recent U.S.-based studies have attempted to debunk the model minority hypothesis, showing that the actual educational trajectories of Chinese youths vary tremendously by family SES, in terms of group-level outcomes, the Chinese still fare better than other ethno-national groups net of SES characteristics (e.g. Kasinitz et al. 2008; Kao 1995; Louie 2004; Portes and Rumbaut 2001). Regardless of actual educational outcomes, the ambition for higher education among Chinese immigrant parents, which are subsequently transmitted to the youths themselves, appear to remain strong. In this way, researchers have commented on how the Chinese represent an ?exceptional? case: even among children whose parents have minimal education (i.e. less than a high school diploma), the pressure to excel at school is nearly universal. Whether or not they actually do well in school and make good grades, they are expected to graduate from high school and to enter some form of post-secondary institution, even if it is not a prestigious four-year university. By comparison, their counterparts from other national origin groups, who come from families of comparable or even higher SES backgrounds, tend not to be as academically-fixated in their future life plans.

This chapter argues that the reform and opening-up policies implemented since the late 1970s have facilitated a shift in how love and intimacy are experienced. It explores the changing meanings of heterosexual relationships by focusing on a group of young Chinese men living in Beijing. As a popular genre fused with a neoliberal reasoning as well as traditional matchmaking principles, young Chinese men’s interpretations of the most popular Chinese reality dating programme is connected to dating and relationship practices in everyday lives. An individualized relationship pattern drawing upon a market principle and consumerist mentality, as well as traditional collective values, is observed. This tends to suggest the emergence of a post-socialist romantic subjectivity, embodying a complex power dynamic between tradition and modernity.

This article explores why apparent political indifference coincides with nationalist passion in Chinese cyberspace. Drawing on interviews with university students and the notion of ‘new politics’, this article argues that online nationalism constitutes an important extension of the political being in the Chinese context, or a form of ‘new politics’ among contemporary youth in certain societies. The ‘dual’ political identity emerging from Chinese youth’s uses of the internet is reflective of, and reinforces, their offline self. Both their apparent lack of interest in engaging with the government and their strong nationalism are products of the same changing subjectivities in post-Mao China.

This article explores the construction of Chinese American identities through fashion. Although Chinese clothing styles served as a symbol of Chinese identity, American-born Chinese youth often preferred Western styles as a means of disassociating themselves from Chinatown and refashioning their identities as Americans. This article documents the brief history of cyber marriage on the Chinese Internet and shows how in-game marriage, with its game codes and marriage regulations, turns out to be the most visualized, institutionalized, and heteronormative form of cyber marriage, by exploring the game players’ gender performativity, especially the gender swapping of male gamers. This study sheds light on Chinese youth subculture under the influence of new media and the consumer digital network in postsocialist China.

The fact that intense competition has become a central issue in Chinese education is rather intriguing. Traditional Chinese culture emphasizes interpersonal harmony and encourages restraining personal desires to address the needs and interests of others. This emphasis was still reflected in empirical studies of Chinese youth in the early 1990s. Research during that period consistently found that Chinese children and adolescents displayed more cooperative and compliant behaviors than their Western counterparts (Domino & Hannah, 1987; Domino, 1992; Orlick, Zhou, & Partington, 1990). How have individualistic competitive values taken root in a society that has a long tradition of emphasizing the virtue of practicing self-restraint and a recent history of encouraging self-sacrifice for the greater good? In this chapter, I examine the discourse of competition among Chinese educators in the last three decades, aiming to provide a historical and cultural background for my discussions in the following chapters of this book.

Heath-Carter anthropometric somatotypes were calculated for 7,710 Chinese youths (4,434 boys and 3,276 girls), 7-18 years of age in the context of sex and age differences in distributions during adolescence. Age-specific trends are characterized by a consistent increase in endomorphy in girls and generally stable mesomorphy in boys. Somatotypes are consistently dominant in mesomorphy in boys and in endomorphy in girls across all ages. Somatotype distributions in the 13 somatotype categories of Heath-Carter somatochart appear to be broader in girls than in boys, and is more influenced by age in girls than in boys. Comparisons with other Asian samples and with Canadian youth suggest racial/ethnic variation in somatotype. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Last year I was invited to take part in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Yale-in-China.

This chapter presents the history of Chinese youth literature within the dynamic sociopolitical and cultural context of modern China. Broadly defined as non-curriculum reading materials published for and read by children and young adults, youth literature is an important type of home literacy resource for young learners, even though it is still uncommon for Chinese school system to integrate the medium into formal teaching practices. The author discusses characteristics of youth literature during five periods of Chinese history beginning with the May Fourth Movement through contemporary times. Examples of typical works for children and young adults in each period are also provided. Close examination of notable titles shows that Chinese youth literature has been both a medium for children’s literacy acquisition and an end in itself by being made a distinct bearer of changing ideas, values, and ideologies to be instilled in young minds. The intricate relationship between youth literature and China’s education system is also highlighted.

To judge from historical records, the history of the Chinese youth movement dates back eighty to ninety years. Over the decades, the movement has bequeathed us significant amounts of historical data as well as knowledge of practical experience. The organizations of the CCP and the Youth League have made many scientific summations of the youth movement; our revolutionary leaders have also made many profound pronouncements on the subject. But to approach the youth movement as a field of systematic research is a new development of the last few years. The history of the youth movement is a new displine, and many theoretical issues await further inquiry.

When China's sociopolitical and cultural order began disintegrating in the wake of the 1911 revolution, the Chinese intelligensia attempted to probe the nature of the crisis. Efforts were made in the early part of the century to reestablish the order, but increasing ideological and intellectual discord among the intelligensia interrupted the process of reconstruction.

All the beauty contestants had performed their roles brilliantly— parading gracefully across the stage several times, modeling their national1 dresses and variations of traditional Chinese gowns, and performing their respective national dances. They had introduced themselves in Spanish, and sometimes Cantonese and/or Mandarin. Finally, they had offered their eloquent responses to the questions asked by the master of ceremonies. The audience of diasporic Chinese from Central America and Panama anxiously waited to hear the final decision of the judges.

This study discussed the differences between Chinese youth film and American teen film through the perspective on cultural foundation. The authors argue that Confucianism was an alternative that greatly affects the depiction of young characters and the causal relationship of morality and fate of the characters in films. The objective of such a comparison was not to advocate for either Chinese or American youth cinema in portraying young people, but to promote a better understanding of the strengths and impacts of youth cinema and youth genre. In addition, this study examined cinematic depictions of young characters portrayed in Chinese youth films and American teen films. It was argued that Chinese youth films and American youth films differ in depictions of school settings and even their purposes.
