Understanding the electrokinetic conversion efficiency in a nanochannel is vital for designing energy storage and conversion devices. In this paper, an analytical electrokinetic energy conversion efficiency in a nanochannel is obtained based on the linear electrokinetic response. The analytical result shows that the conversion efficiency has a maximum with the increasing of the nanochannel pore radius. Numerical solutions based on the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) and Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are used to confirm the analytical expressions. Besides, the influences of the pore radius and surface roughness on the conversion efficiency in nanochannels are also studied by the numerical calculations. In particular, the influences of the surface roughness on the fluid flow, streaming current and streaming potential are examined. The results show that the large bumps and grooves representing the roughness can hinder the fluid flows and ion transports in the nanochannels. The maximum efficiency in a smooth nanochannel is higher than that in a rough channel. However, the small bumps and grooves can increase the surface area of the channel, which is beneficial to improving the conversion efficiency in some cases. This research can provide theoretical guidance to design electrokinetic energy conversion devices.

The highly efficient and stable electrolysis needs the rational control of the catalytically active interface during the reactions. Here we report a new operando surface restructuring pathway activated by pairing catalyst and electrolyte ions. Using SrCoO3-δ-based perovskites as model catalysts, we unveil the critical role of matching the catalyst properties with the electrolyte conditions in modulating catalyst ion leaching and steering surface restructuring processes toward efficient oxygen evolution reaction catalysis in both pH-neutral and alkaline electrolytes. Our results regarding multiple perovskites show that the catalyst ion leaching is controlled by catalyst ion solubility and anions of the electrolyte. Only when the electrolyte cations are smaller than catalyst's leaching cations, the formation of an outer amorphous shell can be triggered via backfilling electrolyte cations into the cationic vacancy at the catalyst surface under electrochemical polarization. Consequently, the current density of reconstructed SrCoO3-δ is increased by 21 folds compared to the pristine SrCoO3-δ at 1.75 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode and outperforms the benchmark IrO2 by 2.1 folds and most state-of-the-art electrocatalysts in the pH-neutral electrolyte. Our work could be a starting point to rationally control the electrocatalyst surface restructuring via matching the compositional chemistry of the catalyst with the electrolyte properties.

MoS2 coating is an effective way to suppress the growth of lithium dendrites, but the study of the layer spacing effect is still lacking. In this work, the diffusion and adsorption of lithium ions on the MoS2 were studied by multiscale simulations. The transport of lithium ions on the MoS2 was investigated by a continuum method, which shows that the smaller layer spacing of 1 nm can enhance the ion diffusion. The QDFT method was used to study the lithium ions transport on 1T- and 2H- MoS2 with layer spacing of 0.65 nm - 1.15 nm. Results indicate that lithium dendrites are more difficult to grow on 2H- MoS2. For both types of MoS2, enlarged layer spacing can reduce lithium dendrites growth and 0.75 nm is the most suitable interlayer distance for MoS2 expanding. We hope our results can provide guidance to the synthesis of dendrite-free lithium metal batteries.

The ion transport in nanoscale pores/channels are totally different to that in the macroscopic level. Here, a combined method based on the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) and Navier–Stokes (NS) equations is applied to study the ion transport in graphene oxide membranes (GOMs) with different interlayer spacing distributions by controlling the offset angle of the middle nanosheet of the model. The layered membrane with suitable interlayer spacing distribution has strong electrical double layer (EDL) overlapping and relatively weak spatial confinement, which improves the ion selectivity and water permeation. This phenomenon can be further understood by analyzing microscopic properties including the local density and flux profiles with considering the effects of surface charge and bulk concentration. This work could provide macroscopic insights into the ionic flow in laminar GOMs at a different angle and possible improvement of the GOMs performances.
