Nearly 8,000 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico are void of all marine life, posing a detrimental situation for fishermen and the regional ecology. Causes of the barren water are discussed, such as overgrowth of algae and nitrogen carried down the Mississippi River from northern farmers as well as recommendations to remedy the situation, which include cutting back the use of nitrogen fertilizers and returning 5 mil acres of farmland to wetlands.

Pork prices in the US have fallen as a result of overproduction. Experts believe the supply of is greater than demand, driving prices as low as 10 cents per pound. They also believe it is as a result of the slaughterhouses that closed in early 1998 because of low supply.
