Atualmente, um tema bastante abordado na área da saúde é sobre a humanização do ambiente hospitalar, que trata não somente das questões relacionadas ao acolhimento do paciente, mas também de questões relacionadas à qualidade do ambiente físico e seus impactos no bem-estar de seus usuários. Diversos trabalhos científicos observaram que estes espaços podem se tornar estressantes e inadequados em razão da falta de alguns elementos que podem impactar de forma direta na qualidade destes locais. Neste sentido, áreas verdes, quando tratadas de maneira adequada, podem proporcionar grande melhoria na qualidade do ambiente hospitalar, exercendo ainda influência positiva no conforto ambiental ao proporcionar melhorias no microclima. Diante do exposto, a questão norteadora desta pesquisa é: áreas verdes interferem na qualidade ambiental e no bem-estar das pessoas que vivenciam ambientes hospitalares? Assim sendo, o presente estudo parte da hipótese de que áreas verdes hospitalares contribuem para o bem-estar de seus usuários, tendo como objetivo principal, a verificação da interferência da presença de áreas verdes na qualidade ambiental de uma unidade hospitalar. Para tanto, foi feita uma análise da configuração e das características físicas das áreas verdes existentes entre as alas de internação da Irmandade Santa Casa de Valinhos/SP-Brasil. Para a avaliação do microclima, variáveis climáticas (temperatura, umidade relativa do ar e velocidade do vento) foram aferidas a fim de comparar as áreas analisadas. Verificou-se que a temperatura e umidade relativa do ar apresentaram variações devido à presença ou não de vegetação, fato que pode impactar de forma direta no conforto térmico e, consequentemente, interferir no bem-estar de todos que vivenciam nesses espaços. Pode-se concluir, portanto, que áreas verdes podem interferir de forma positiva no bem-estar de seus usuários, seja físico ou psicológico, uma vez que o verde também transmite um desejável sentimento de empatia e agradabilidade, indicando que maior atenção deva ser dispensada a estas áreas ao se projetar unidades hospitalares.

ResumoO ensino adaptativo surge como uma das estratégias da Era Digital para a otimização do processo de aprendizagem, amparando os alunos na elaboração de percursos de aprendizagem por meio de recursos tecnológicos. Ao mesmo tempo, ele permite reconhecer o que, onde, como e quando cada um dos alunos aprende com mais facilidade, apropriando-se disto para promover um ensino voltado às habilidades específicas desse estudante. Neste artigo o objetivo é apresentar um mapeamento de perfis de aprendizagens em alunos da pós-graduação da Universidade Franciscana – UFN. A metodologia é de caráter exploratória e descritiva, seguindo como matriz a teoria de Gardner (1995) sobre as Inteligências Múltiplas e buscando a compreensão dos alunos em relação às suas aprendizagens. Foi possível inferir que a multiplicidade intelectual é uma caraterística atemporal do ensino para todo o corpo discente e deve ser compreendida e incorporada pelo docente na educação, assim aproveitando as habilidades individuais dos alunos desenvolvendo com eles, bilateralmente, suas áreas de conhecimento e a apropriação tecnológica da Era Digital. In this article the objective is to present a mapping of learning profiles in graduate students at the Franciscana University - UFN. The methodology is exploratory and descriptive, following the theory of Gardner (1995) on Multiple Intelligences as a matrix and seeking the understanding of students in relation to their learning. It was possible to infer that intellectual multiplicity is a timeless characteristic of teaching for the entire student body and should be understood and incorporated by the teacher in education, thus taking advantage of the individual skills of students, developing with them, bilaterally, their areas of knowledge and technological appropriation of the Digital Age. The suicide attempt evidences the non-consummation of the act of taking one's own life, giving the attempt and the suicide a different symptomatic place. The objective of this study was to discuss suicide attempt in adolescents in contemporary times and its direct relationship with culture, through psychoanalysis. The exploratory bibliographic research was conducted in the SciELO, Google Scholar and PePSIC-BVS platforms, and five articles dated 2017-2021 were selected, as well as books contained in the literature and data available on Brazilian government websites and primers. The descriptors used for the search were: Adolescent, Suicide, and Psychoanalysis. The content analysis carried out was based on the psychoanalytic context as a theoretical and methodological reference, besides the understanding of the social impacts generated by the theme. The sociocultural influence directly interferes in the suicide theme, due to the taboo of talking about death and suicide as a symptom of a social illness and the difficulties of listening spaces for adolescents and public policies for adolescent care. Finally, it is necessary to understand and articulate actions, within the scope of public policies, as well as psychoanalytic clinics, which are willing to act and respond to the social and cultural realities involving suicide attempts and completed suicides - a broad understanding of the realities experienced and the integrality (biopsychosocial, cultural, and spiritual) of the subjects.

Introduction: Due to Brazilian population aging, prevalence of aortic stenosis, and limited number of scores in literature, it is essential to develop risk scores adapted to our reality and created in the specific context of this disease. Methods: This is an observational historical cohort study with analysis of 802 aortic stenosis patients who underwent valve replacement at Hospital São Lucas, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, from 1996 to 2018. With the aid of logistic regression, a weighted risk score was constructed based on the magnitude of the coeficients β of the logistic equation. Two performance statistics were obtained: area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and the chi-square (χ2) of Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit with Pearson’s correlation coeficient between the observed events and predicted as a model calibration estimate. Results: The risk predictors that composed the score were valve replacement surgery combined with coronary artery bypass grafting, prior renal failure, New York Heart Association class III/IV heart failure, age > 70 years, and ejection fraction < 50%. The receiver operating characteristic curve area was 0.77 (95% confidence interval: 0.72-0.82); regarding the model calibration estimated between observed/predicted mortality, Hosmer-Lemeshow test χ2 = 3,70 (P=0.594) and Pearson’s coeficient r = 0.98 (P

O artigo reflete o atual estágio de uma pesquisa em andamento. O texto procura, a partir do repertório da filosofia afroperspectivista, indicar elementos de uma pedagogia popular do uso de tecnologias da informação e comunicação para a produção de narrativas. Esse esforço, de ordem conceitual e metodológico, evoca signos e personagens das histórias e culturas afro-brasileiras e africanas, em particular do Candomblé Nagô praticado no Brasil. O recurso a uma matriz simbólica afro-brasileira também se presta à desmistificação das tecnologias, na medida em que o uso de computadores, redes e outros dispositivos pode ser associado à mesma vivência cotidiana dedicada ao culto de Orixás.

The treatment of ingestion of caustic agents is controversial in the literature. Surgical therapy has been shown to be the best way to proceed, but the surgical methodology has been varied according to the patient's involvement. This study aims to expose the experience of a single institution in relation to the methodology used for the surgical treatment of esophageal stenosis by ingestion of a caustic substance. A retrospective study was carried out in which data were collected from 27 patients who underwent a surgical procedure for the treatment of esophageal stenosis due to alkali ingestion at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo between 2010 and 2019 and their subsequent comparison between the conduits used in the surgical intervention. Fisher's test was performed to compare the groups regarding cervical leakage and post-surgical symptoms with a significance level of 5%. Of the 27 surgical procedures for esophageal stenosis due to alkali ingestion, 12 performed gastric conduits and 15 colon conduits. When comparing the groups regarding cervical leaks, no statistically significant difference was noted (p = 0.7060). There were also no statistically significant differences regarding the presence of symptoms in the postoperative period (p > 0.99...) Introduction: Stroke is a complication that causes considerable morbidity and mortality during the heart surgery postoperative period (incidence: 1.3 to 5%; mortality: 13 to 41%). Models for assessing the risk of stroke after heart surgery have been proposed, but most of them do not evaluate postoperative morbidity. The aim of this study was to develop a risk score for postoperative stroke in patients who undergo heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Methods: A cohort study was conducted with data from 4,862 patients who underwent surgery from 1996 to 2016. Logistic regression was used to assess relationships between risk factors and stroke. Data from 3,258 patients were used to construct the model. The model’s performance was then validated using data from the remainder of the patients (n=1,604). The model’s accuracy was tested using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: The prevalence of stroke during the postoperative period was 3% (n=149); 59% of the patients who exhibited this outcome were male, 51% were aged ≥ 66 years, and 31.5% of the patients died. The variables that remained as independent predictors of the outcome after multivariate analysis were advanced age, urgent/emergency surgery, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, history of cerebrovascular disease, and cardiopulmonary bypass time ≥ 110 minutes. The area under the ROC curve was 0.71 (95% confidence interval 0.66 - 0.75). Conclusion: We were able to develop a risk score for stroke after heart surgery. This score classifies patients as low, medium, high, or very high risk of a surgery-related stroke.

O presente trabalho a inserção dos meios de comunicação no cotidiano dos docentes e discentes, especialmente dos canais comunicativos que são decorrentes do avanço da tecnologia, sendo muitas vezes utilizados como ferramentas estratégicas de incentivo às boas práticas de ensino que valorizem a construção do saber pelas duas instâncias. Sobre as plataformas mobile utilizadas na educação, disponibilizadas gratuitamente na web, o uso de Quizzes – para abordagens de conteúdos – e de Ambientes Virtuais – para estabelecer a comunicação discente-docente destacou-se das outras possibilidades. Desse modo, nosso objetivo geral foi observar como se dá o conhecimento dos docentes da UFN sobre as plataformas citadas, especificamente sobre suas preferências de uso, sugestões de exemplos, opiniões sobre suas dinâmicas ou divergências nas práticas.Um questionário via Google Forms foi elaborado e enviado aos 407 docentes da instituição, para se quantificar os dados. Os resultados estão apresentados em infográfico e discutidos neste trabalho.

Bone tissue-derive biomaterials have become of great interest to treat diseases of the skeletal system. Biological scaffolds of demineralized and decellularized extracellular matrices (ECM) have been developed and one of these options are ECM hydrogels derived from bovine bone. Nanomaterials may be able to regulate stem cell differentiation due to their unique physical-chemical properties. The present work aimed to evaluate the osteoinductive effects of ECM hydrogels associated with barium titanate nanoparticles (BTNP) on dental pulp cells derived from exfoliated teeth. The addition of BTNP in the ECM derived hydrogel did not affect cell proliferation and the formation of bone nodules. Furthermore, it increased the expression of bone alkaline phosphatase. The results demonstrated that the nanobiocomposites were able to promote the osteogenic differentiation, even in the absence of chemical inducing factors for osteogenic differentiation. In conclusion, bovine bone ECM hydrogel combined with BTNP presented and increased expression of markers of osteogenic differentiation in the absence of chemical inducing factors.

O processo de planejamento do ambiente construído exige uma série de procedimentos investigativos, entre eles conhecer a percepção ambiental de seus usuários. O artigo apresenta um estudo de caso voltado à avaliação da adequabilidade de um ambiente de trabalho adotando a metodologia denominada de “atributos induzidos” também conhecida pela ferramenta “constelação de atributos”, oriunda de estudos da psicologia ambiental. O artigo trabalha questões comportamentais geradas a partir de aspectos físicos e sensoriais estimulados pela organização do ambiente construído e levantadas pela ferramenta investigativa. Este estudo, realizado no setor administrativo de uma empresa do ramo farmacêutico, situada na região de Campinas-SP, realizou entrevistas com funcionários visando estimular a percepção cognitiva destes com base em perguntas-chave endereçadas pelos investigadores gerando, assim, dados que alimentam o programa computacional que identificará e qualificará atributos ambientais envolvidos na percepção. Os resultados obtidos revelam o nível de ajuste psicológico pessoa-ambiente, permitindo tecer informações valiosas aos investigadores para ajustamento do ambiente às necessidades de seus usuários e, consequentemente, propiciar bem-estar e incremento da produtividade. Lung diseases have a strong relationship with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It has been previously demonstrated that conditions such as tracheal stenosis, asthma and even lung transplantation may worsen with reflux and these patients have few symptoms of GERD. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people who needed mechanical ventilation and tracheostomy increased. Our objective was to demonstrate the prevalence of gastro-oesophageal reflux in patients with tracheostomy and describe its characteristics. Methods Esophageal manometry and 24 h pH-metry was performed in 137 consecutive patients with a tracheostomy already in a chronic phase, independent of symptoms. Inquire on respiratory and digestive symptoms was also carried out at the time of the examination. Prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux was identified in this population and description of the groups with reflux and without it, as well as comparison between them. Results Of the 137 patients, 49 were male, the average age was 40.94 ± 17.3 and the body mass index was 26.3 ± 4.85. The prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux was 45.2%. Baseline characteristics were similar between the groups with and without reflux. In the reflux group, the mean DeMeester score was 36.5 ± 20.8 and the presence of lower sphincter hypotonia was found in only 31% of the patients and was not correlated with reflux between the groups (p = 0.285). Regarding the symptoms, 48% had heartburn symptoms and only 30% had a combination of typical symptoms (heartburn + regurgitation). Conclusion The presence of tracheostomy is related to an increased prevalence of reflux, even without typical symptoms most of the time. The mechanism for this is still unknown, perhaps the altered respiratory dynamics has a role. These patients should be investigated with functional exams if they develop any condition that may be affected by reflux.

Este artigo pretende analisar as conexões entre religião e poder na Roma Antiga. Alguns rituais religiosos foram apropriados pela retórica política no Principado de Augusto para a sua legitimação. Assim, as atitudes augustanas de valorização da tradição e restauração da ordem social estão relacionadas com a construção da sua auctoritas. Dessa forma, ressaltamos que o culto à deusa Pax e as suas representações demarcavam nitidamente as fronteiras simbólicas de um período de transição, que vai das guerras civis para a estabilidade desse novo sistema político. Tais elementos podem ser observados tanto na literatura da época quanto na sua cultura material. Sendo assim, abordaremos esse tópico retórico através do estudo das moedas e da literatura augustana.

Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of death worldwide. The heart has limited capacity of regeneration, therefore, transplantation is the only solution in some cases despite presenting many disadvantages. Tissue engineering has been considered the ideal strategy for regenerative medicine in cardiology. It is an interdisciplinary field combining many techniques that aim to maintain, regenerate or replace a tissue or organ. The main approach of cardiac tissue engineering is to create cardiac grafts, either whole heart substitutes or tissues that can be efficiently implanted in the organism, regenerating the tissue and giving rise to a fully functional heart, without causing side effects, such as immunogenicity. In this review, we systematically present and compare the techniques that have drawn the most attention in this field and that generally have focused on four important issues: the scaffold material selection, the scaffold material production, cellular selection and in vitro cell culture. Many studies used several techniques that are herein presented, including biopolymers, decellularization and bioreactors, and made significant advances, either seeking a graft or an entire bioartificial heart. However, much work remains to better understand and improve existing techniques, to develop robust, efficient and efficacious methods.

O presente artigo busca iluminar um estudo de caso de um remanescente da arquitetura modernista paulistana, hoje quase despercebido no centro da cidade de Jacareí, estado de São Paulo, atualmente em processo contínuo de descaracterização, já querendo desaparecer da memória da cidade. O prédio do Fórum de Jacareí do alto de seus quase 60 anos de existência nos conta uma história de prestígio e valor que seu estilo arquitetônico já deteve identificado com o momento de ascensão das estruturas urbanas do estado e do país e a aura de progresso que a obra modernista emprestava. Nessa perspectiva, o artigo traz à luz a emergência da necessidade de preservarmos nosso passado de forma a resguardarmos nossa história, e por assim dizer, a própria identidade da cidade. O estado crítico dessa notável obra é testemunho relevante de um patrimônio modernista do estado que clama por apoio em meio à expectativa sombria que se desenha em torno de seu uso e apropriação por quem deveria em tese resguardá-la

Nuestro argumento central es que este objeto era un mecanismo incorporado para consolidar la imagen de Otavio Augusto, preservando asi su memoria como un buen gobernante para las generaciones posteriores y las regiones alejadas del imperio. In this context, we will analyze the space of epigraphic inscriptions in the Roman Empire in order to understand the insertion of the RGDA and its visibility and circulation. Thus, the article establishes analysis processes concerning documentary typology and takes into account the historical context and form and content characteristics. O presente artigo tem por objetivo central fazer uma breve reflexão sobre a mercadorização da terra, sobretudo a indígena, a qual tem sua posse regulada pela Constituição Federal. Para tanto, o viés teórico-metodológico adotado é o marxismo, pensando o processo de mercadorização da terra, inicialmente no caso inglês e chagando ao Brasil e finalizando na terra indígena como um resultado da luta de classes. Tem-se como questão norteadora a seguinte: qual a relação entre a mercadorização da terra e o direito indígena à terra? E, para isso, autores como Marx (1982), Polanyi (2012), Poulantzas (1986) e outros autores são utilizados para a discussão. Portanto, os conflitos decorrentes do processo de mercadorização das terras indígenas nada mais são do que apenas a ponto do iceberg.

Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation. Background : The most common location of malignant tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath in the spinal cord is the intradural-extramedullary region, and is rare in the spinal nerve roots in the lumbar region. They mainly affect large female dogs over six years of age. Imaging tests assist in the presumptive diagnosis, but confirmation requires histopathological and immunohistochemical examination. The prognosis is guarded. Diagnostic imaging, anatomopathological and immunohistochemical findings of a malignant tumor of the intradural-extramedullary peripheral nerve sheath with medullary infiltration in the lumbar region in a young dog are reported. Case : A body of a 6-year-old Poodle dog was donated for necropsy and diagnostic clarification. In the history, there was a suspicion of lumbar intramedullary neoplasia, detected by computed tomography (CT), with a 4 years progressive chronic evolution. Additionally, the dog had hidden spina bifida (L7 to S3), as detected by radiography and CT. On post mortem radiographic examination (X-ray), there was an enlargement of the vertebral canal (T10 to S2), intense osteolysis (L1 to S2), spinous processes (L5 to L7), and ankylosis (L3 to L7). Necropsy revealed ankylosis (L3 to L7) and intradural-extramedullary mass (9.5 × 2.6 × 2.3 cm) (L2 to L6). No metastases were identified. On microscopy, there was neoplastic proliferation of cells with intense pleomorphism, arranged in bundles interlaced in palisades and sometimes solid mantles. The mitotic index was high, ranging from 10 to 12 mitoses per field. There was also necrosis, hemorrhage, edema, and focal axonal demyelination of the adjacent white matter in the spinal cord. Masson Trichrome staining highlighted an intense diffuse conjunctive stroma. There was a suspicion of a malignant tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath and an immunohistochemical panel was performed for confirmation. There was strong and diffuse positivity for vimentin and S-100 and partial positivity for neuron-specific enolase (NSE), negative for anti-factor VIII, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), α-actin for smooth muscle, cytokeratin, neurofilament, and desmin. Thus, the diagnosis of malignant neoplasm of the peripheral nerve sheath was confirmed. Discussion : Peripheral nerve sheath tumors are classified as benign or malignant. In dogs, they are frequent in elderly, females, and large breeds. In this case report, the animal was young, female, and small breed. The location of the spinal nerve roots is uncommon, and is more commonly found in the brachial plexus. In the animal reported, the tumor was observed as lumbar swelling. Clinical signs vary with the affected region, however, neurogenic claudication and muscle atrophy are more frequent, as observed in this report. Imaging examinations such as X-rays and CT assist in the presumptive diagnosis. In this case report, spina bifida was identified on radiography, and CT suggested the presence of intramedullary neoplasia and allowed to monitor tumor growth. Post mortem X-ray imaging revealed intense osteolysis and ankylosis, which were confirmed at necropsy, which also elucidated its intradural-extramedullary location with infiltration into the spinal cord. The confirmation of the neoplasm was made by histopathological and immunohistochemical examination; the latter should be made a panel, not restricted to the use of antibodies S-100 and vimentin only. The prognosis of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) of the spinal cord is poor, and although there are palliative methods, there is no curative treatment, as complications can interfere with the quality of life of the animal. MPNST should be included in the differential diagnosis of spinal disorders, even in young dogs and small breeds. CT helps in early diagnosis to make decisions aimed at the animal's well-being.

Barrett’ s esophagus (BE) is a complication of severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The major concern aspect is its association to dysplasia and esophageal adenocarcinoma. The endoscopic treatment of the epithelium, as well as the follow-up (FU) period, should be guided according to the diagnosis and the worst degree of dysplasia found in the last endoscopies. However, we are aware of the great difficulty and variation among pathologists in diagnosing and grading dysplasia in BE. Methods Aim: Review new diagnoses of low- and high-grade dysplasia (LGD and HGD) in BE with specialized pathologists during long-term FU in clinical or surgical treatment for GERD From January 1980 to July 2019, 738 patients with BE were FU (average of 98 months), with routine endoscopic examination each 2 years with multiple biopsies, in patients with BE without dysplasia. 48 patients were diagnosed with any grade of dysplasia on FU endoscopic biopsies. The biopsies were reviewed by specialized pathologists and evaluated epidemiologic data, clinical or surgical treatment for the GERD and about the confirmation, downgrade or upgrade of dysplasia degree. Results 48 patients were reviewed, 32 males. The medium age was 61,9 YO (29 -93). Only 18 patients were in follow-up after surgical treatment for GERD. 9 patients had first diagnosis of in situ Adenocarcinoma, after review 8 were confirmed and treated and 1 were downgrade to HGD. 8 patients had first HGD and after review, 2 were upgrade to Adenocarcinoma, 4 were confirmed as HGD (endoscopic treatment) and 2 downgraded to no dysplasia BE. 31 patients had first LGD. 2 had upgrade to HGD/Adeno, 8 are in FU annually and 21 were downgrade to non dysplastic BE. Conclusion The diagnosis of dysplasia in BE remains a challenge. 23 of 48 (47%) of our patients once marked with any grade of dysplasia, were downgrade after pathological review and FU to non dysplasic BE. These difficulty of appropriate dysplasia degree diagnosis could make some mistakes in BE treatment and surveilance.

Systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) is frequently associated with both gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and simultaneous esophageal dysmotility (ED). Antireflux surgery have to considerate the individual esophageal dysmotility degree of each patient. They need GERD treatment as a priority to help control worsening lung function, in patients developing pulmonary fibrosis or in lung transplantation patients. Another issue is the possibility that fundoplications in this patients can cause esophageal stasis, an event that can also disrupt lung function. Methods 113 patients were referred for surgical treatment of GERD, related with pulmonary impairment. SS patients are the most critical, once the ED may be an obstacle to fundoplication. We divided this patients in three groups regarding the esophageal function. A- Partial fundoplication—without important affection of ED, checked by manometry, confirmed with a complete emptying of esophagus in barium swallow test. B- Laparoscopic gastric bypass for treatment of GERD (RYGBP)—aperistalsis or atonic esophageal body, with normal esophageal empty at barium test. C- Esophagectomy—Atonic esophageal body with important delayed emptying of esophagus in barium swallow test. Results We could follow up 4 patients in group A, 3 patients in group B and 2 patients in group C. Median follow-up was 75, 30 and 18 months for Groups A,B and C respectively. All 3 patients in the RYGB group resolved all the symptoms including heartburn and regurgitation, with a sensitive improve in lung function. Only 1 patients in the fundoplication group reported symptom improvement or resolution. The Patients at Group C have no complain of Dysphagia but referred regurgitation and difficulty feedingtill first year. Conclusion Laparoscopic RYGB as an anti-reflux procedure is safe and may provide an alternative to fundoplication in the treatment of GERD for systemic sclerosis patients with esophageal dysmotility. Both reflux control and dysphagia rates were improved in the RYGBP group compared with fundoplication and esophagectomy.. This finding suggests that RYGBP may be an option for the primary manage- ment of scleroderma-associated gastroesophageal reflux in patients without importnat impairing of esophageal emptying.

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients have a higher prevalence of airway symptoms, such as chronic cough, wheezing, and hoarseness. The therapeutic management of patients with these symptoms is controversial. Therefore, this study aims to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the efficacy of anti-reflux surgery for controlling respiratory symptoms related to GERD. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed. Extraction of the data concerning proportions of participants who were not free of respiratory symptoms related to GERD (cough, wheezing, hoarseness) or not substantially improved at follow-ups (failure to cure) was performed. Results Of the screened articles, 61 were included for meta-analysis, with a cumulative sample size of 3,869 patients. Of all the included patients, after anti-reflux surgery, the general symptoms improvement was 80% (95% CI 75.2–84%). The numbers needed to harm (NNH) and the numbers needed to treat (NNT) were 15.21 and 1.23, respectively. Of the included patients, 83.4% (95% CI 78.3–87.5%) patients reported improvement in cough symptoms after surgery. For the wheezing symptom, 71.5% (95% CI 62.9–78.8%) reported improvement after surgery. Moreover, surgery presented better results in improving respiratory symptoms than medical therapy (risk difference: -0.46; 95% CI -0.77, −0.16). Conclusion Physicians should strongly consider surgical anti-reflux procedures for controlling respiratory symptoms in GERD patients after proper patient selection. Anti-reflux surgery has shown high efficacy in improving respiratory symptoms related to GERD, even when compared to medical therapy.

Corrosive ingestion is a significant challenge for healthcare support. Limited data is available regarding the best treatment, and there is still a lack of consensus about the optimal surgical approach and its outcomes. This study aims to show a single-institution experience of surgical treatment of esophageal stenosis due to corrosive substance ingestion and review the current literature. Methods A retrospective review, including demographics, psychiatric profile, surgical procedures, and outcomes, is described. A systematic review of the literature was performed in PubMed. Results In total, 27 surgical procedures for esophageal stenosis due to corrosive substances ingestion were performed from 2010 to 2019. Depression and drug abuse were diagnosed in 30% and 22% of the included patients, respectively. The incidence rate of cancer in patients with corrosive esophageal stenosis is 701.7–874.1 per 1,000,000 person-years, and the cancer latency between corrosion ingestion to carcinoma is 10–58 years. Esophagectomy and esophageal bypass were performed in 13 and 14 patients, respectively. No 30-day mortality was recorded. Conclusion The surgical intervention either by esophagectomy or esophageal bypass seems to show a high success rate. However, the outcomes depend on a high-quality multidisciplinary network of esophageal and thoracic surgeons, intensivists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and nutritional teams.

Gastric tube fistula is a rare event, but very feared, as it invariably progresses with associated mediastinitis and can be fatal. We present a case in which this fistula occurred together with all diagnostic investigation of etiology and treatment, in addition to a brief review of this complication. Methods A 45-year-old patient underwent minimaly invasive esophagectomy due to end-stage achalasia. After 6 days, she presented acute multivisceral migration to the chest and needed to reintervation by open surgery and hiatoplasty. The patient evolved with outflow of bile through the chest drain. Conservative treatment was attempted. However, after 4 days, she underwent thoracotomy and suture of the orifice, and a nasal tube was maintained to drain the gastric tube. There was no suture dehiscence and in control a seriogram evidenced pyloric stenosis. After 2 months, she was submitted to GPOEM with improvement of gastric emptying and normal return to feeding. Results The risk factors for gastric tube fistula are the same as those for cervical or intrathoracic anastomosis fistula after esophagectomy. Some authors attribute the vascularization of the stomach and malnutrition. However, as shown in this case, impairment of gastric emptying is an important factor to increased pressure and consequent fistula. The patient experienced acute migration through the hiatus, which obstructed the tube for a few hours. And after the defect was corrected, he maintained an increased pressure due to pyloric achalasia, which was initially treated by depressurizing the tube by nasogastric tube and then GPOEM. Conclusion Gastric tube fistula can be avoided when we can establish a good gastric tube emptying condition.

We aimed at verifying whether resveratrol can decrease cell proliferation and change osteogenic differentiation of cells obtained from patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1). Deciduous dental pulp derived stem cells were isolated from NF1 patient and healthy volunteer. These cells were subjected to increasing concentrations of resveratrol and evaluated for proliferation and mineralization of osteogenic differentiation. The results showed that resveratrol reduced the difference in proliferation between CNT and NF1 cells in a dose-dependent manner and this property was more prominent in affected cells than in healthy cells. Resveratrol showed no statistically significant changes in mineralization in osteogenic differentiation of NF1 cells, at low doses tested. In conclusion, in a dose-dependent manner, resveratrol displays interesting properties that could be applied in a possible treatment aimed at decreasing cellular proliferation in neurofibromatosis. Furthermore, it is selective concerning healthy cells and not affecting cell differentiation. Further research to cell selectivity, differentiation to other tissue types, and cell cytotoxicity are needed.

Sugarcane is a crop of great importance for human consumption, either for the production of sucrose or for the production of ethanol fuel. The objective of this work was to evaluate the phytotoxicity caused by the herbicides, the agronomic components in two sugarcane cultivars, at five evaluation times, during the 12-month and 18-month cultivation periods. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replicates, in a 10 x 2 factorial scheme, with nine herbicides (tembotrione, mesotrione, clomazone, saflufenacil, 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic, fluroxypyr + picloram, metribuzin, isoxaflutole, sulfentrazone), two sugarcane cultivars (RB006995 and RB036153), and five evaluation times (7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days after application – DAA). The most phytotoxic herbicides for the 12-month cultivation period in the cultivars RB036153 and RB006995 were clomazone and sulfentrazone. For 18-month cultivation period, the herbicides isoxaflutole, clomazone and sulfentrazone were the most phytotoxic, mainly for the cultivar RB006995. For most herbicides, phytotoxicity decreased along the days after application. The most selective herbicides for both cultivars and cultivation periods were tembotrione, mesotrione and fluroxypyr + picloram. RESUMO A cana-de-açúcar é uma cultura de grande importância para alimentação humana, tanto para a produção de sacarose quanto para a produção de combustível etanol. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a fitotoxidade causada pelos herbicidas, nos períodos de cultivo de cana de ano e cana de ano-e-meio durante o estádio de brotação e perfilhamento de dois cultivares de cana-de-açúcar. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, em um esquema fatorial 10 x 2, sendo os fatores compostos por nove herbicidas (tembotriona, mesotriona, clomazona, saflufenacil, 2,4 diclorofenoxiacético, fluroxipir + picloram, metribuzin, isoxaflutol, sulfentrazona) mais uma testemunha, dois cultivares de cana-de-açúcar (RB006995, RB036153) e cinco épocas de avaliação (7, 14, 21, 28 e 35 DAA). Os herbicidas mais fitotóxicos para a cana de ano nos cultivares RB036153 e RB006995 foram clomazona e sulfentrazona. Para a cana de ano-e-meio, os herbicidas isoxaflutol, clomazona e sulfentrazona foram os mais fitotóxicos, principalmente no cultivar RB006995. Para a maioria dos herbicidas houve decréscimo da fitotoxidez com o passar dos dias após a aplicação. Os herbicidas mais seletivos para ambos os cultivares e períodos de cultivo foram tembotriona, mesotriona e fluroxipir + picloram.

A floresta amazônica apresenta elevadas temperaturas e grandes quantidades de precipitações anuais, embora ocorram grandes variações interanuais desses elementos meteorológicos. A temperatura do ar (Tar) e a umidade relativa do ar (UR) dentro e acima de uma floresta são resultado de complexas trocas energéticas através dos processos de reflexão, transmissão e absorção da energia solar. Esse estudo foi realizado na Floresta Nacional de Caxiuanã, Pará, Brasil, e teve como objetivo principal avaliar a variabilidade sazonal da temperatura e umidade do ar a partir de uma análise de perfil vertical no interior da floresta, com medidas alturas de 2 m, 16 m, 28 m e 42 m, com registros a cada 30 minutos, durante o período de 2012 a 2016. Os resultados indicaram grande sazonalidade nestes elementos meteorológicos, e as maiores temperaturas ocorreram no nível do dossel (28 m), e as menores foram observadas próximo à superfície (2 m), devido a atenuação da radiação solar no interior da floresta. Os maiores valores da UR foram observados próximo à superfície (2 m), e os menores ocorreram acima do dossel, devido as maiores velocidades do vento neste nível. Estes resultados indicam grande variabilidade espaço-temporal destes elementos meteorológicos, o que influencia no comportamento dos organismos vivos que habitam aquele ambiente florestal.

Florestas tropicais são reguladoras do clima e o padrão de variabilidade dos elementos meteorológicos representa fisicamente interdependência entre os fluxos térmicos e hídricos para a floresta e a atmosfera. A presente investigação analisa uma série de dados (precipitação, temperatura do ar, umidade relativa do ar, radiação solar global, velocidade e direção do vento) na Floresta Nacional de Caxiuanã, Pará. O estudo ocorreu entre 2005 e 2013, usando-se uma classificação sazonal, definida da seguinte forma: dezembro a junho, como chuvoso, e julho a novembro, como menos chuvoso. In order to test the effect of the lower availability of water for vegetation in a tropical Amazonian forest, a long-term research project was created in 2001 called Projeto Seca Floresta (ESECAFLOR). The main objective of the project is to determine how a significant reduction of the available water in the soil, in the long term, can affect the biota. The ESECAFLOR consists of two 1-hectare plots, the experimental plot is covered with 6,000 plastic panels reducing precipitation by 50%. The objective of this work is to compare the floristic and plant structure (< 2 meters high) between the experimental and control of ESECAFLOR plots. There was a significant reduction in species richness and diversity, plant density and height, and a significant change in species composition between experimental plot compared to control. The plant community clearly responded to the reduction of soil moisture in the experimental plot, corroborating the results of some climate models that say rainfall reduction in the Amazon will negatively affect the plant community.

Despite its economic importance, there are few QTL associated with age at puberty described in the literature. In this study, a weighted single-step genome-wide association study was performed to detect genomic regions and putative candidate genes related to age at puberty in young Nelore bulls. Several protein-coding genes related to spermatogenesis functions were identified within the genomic regions that explain more than 0.5% of the additive genetic variance for age at puberty in Nelore bulls, such as ADAM11, BRCA1, CSNK2A, CREBBP, MEIOC, NDRG2, NECTIN3, PARP2, PARP9, PRSS21, RAD51C, RNASE4, SLX4, SPA17, TEX14, TIMP2 and TRIP13 gene. Enrichment analysis by DAVID also revealed several GO terms related to spermatogenesis such as DNA replication (GO:0006260), male meiosis I (GO:0007141), double-strand break repair (GO:0006302), base excision repair (GO:0006284), apoptotic process (GO:0006915), cell–cell adhesion (GO: 0098609) and focal adhesion (GO:0005925). The heritability for age at puberty shows that this trait can be improved based on traditional EBV selection. Adding genomic information to the system helps to elucidate genes and molecular mechanisms controlling the sexual precocity and could help to predict sexual precocity in Nelore bulls with greater accuracy at younger age, which would speed up the breeding programme for this breed. Probably one of the most important roles played by minerals in the origin of life on Earth was to pre-concentrate biomolecules from the prebiotic seas. There are other ways to pre concentrate biomolecules such as wetting/drying cycles and freezing/sublimation. However, adsorption is most important. If the pre-concentration did not occur—because of degradation of the minerals—other roles played by them such as protection against degradation, formation of polymers, or even as primitive cell walls would be seriously compromised. We studied the interaction of two artificial seawaters with kaolinite, bentonite, montmorillonite, goethite, ferrihydrite and quartz. One seawater has a major cation and anion composition similar to that of the oceans of the Earth 4.0 billion years ago (ASW 4.0 Ga). In the other, the major cations and anions are an average of the compositions of the seawaters of today (ASWT). When ASWT, which is rich in Na+ and Cl−, interacted with bentonite and montmorrilonite structural collapse occurred on the 001 plane. However, ASW 4.0 Ga, which is rich in Mg2+ and SO4 2−, did not induce this behavior. When ASW 4.0 Ga was reacted with the minerals for 24 h at room temperature and 80 °C, the release of Si and Al to the fluid was below 1 % of the amount in the minerals—meaning that dissolution of the minerals did not occur. In general, minerals adsorbed Mg2+ and K+ from the ASW 4.0 Ga and these cations could be used for the formation of polymers. Also, when the minerals were mixed with ASW 4.0 Ga at 80 °C and ASWT at room temperature or 80 °C it caused the precipitation of CaSO4∙2H2O and halite, respectively. Finally, further experiments (adsorption, formation of polymers, protection of molecules against degradation, primitive cell wall formation) performed under the conditions described in this paper will probably be more representative of what happened on the prebiotic Earth.

Iphimeis dives (Germar, 1824) is a species of beetle from Chrysomelidae family, commonly found in fruit trees, and it is known as a vine defoliator beetle or Green Beetle. In this study, I. dives occurrence in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is registered in the cities of Assis Chateaubriand and Palotina, western region of Parana State. This is the first recorded I. dives attack in Brazil’s bean crops. The insects were collected when plants were between the phenological development stages V4 /R5. Although commonly found in fruit trees and some vegetables, this record in bean crop suggests greater attention to this insect because of the damage it may cause in this culture. Bel?m, PA, Brazil Acai seed was used herein as an Amazon biomass waste for the synthesis of activated and modified carbon in order to find a possible use for the large volume of residues generated during the processing of this fruit and to add value to this residue. Activated carbon materials were used to remove Pb2+, Fe2+, and Mg2+ metal ions from water. The efficiency of removal of these ions by the acai seed activated carbon was compared with that by commercial activated carbon. Activated carbon materials were prepared by carbonization and chemical activation using two KOH impregnation ratios, namely 1:1 (ACK1) and 5:1 (ACK5), by mass. These samples were modified by treatment with nitric acid under microwave heating (ACK1-M) and (ACK5-M), respectively. The result of the elemental analysis indicated that this biomass has carbon and sulfur contents of 43.29% and 0.10% wt, respectively. The textural parameters showed that the obtained activated carbon samples presented high surface areas between 1462 and 2774 m2 g?1. Raman analysis revealed the different degrees of graphitization of the activated carbon materials. Boehm titration identified the presence of phenolic, carboxylic, and lactonic groups in samples that were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In the metal adsorption tests, ACK5-M showed better removal efficiency, reaching 86% removal for Pb2+, 69% for Fe2+, and 8% for Mg2+in 1 h of contact time; these results were superior to those obtained for commercial carbon. The results indicated that acai seed can be used for the production of activated carbon and can also be used for metal removal.

As espécies vegetais existentes na Caatinga constituem um importante potencial madeireiro e econômico regional. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer como acontece a extração e utilização de madeira da Caatinga no município de Aurora – estado do Ceará, bem como as concepções de agricultores, marceneiros, escultores, luthier e proprietários de pizzaria e padaria quanto à origem e os impactos ambientais causados pela exploração desse recurso. A metodologia constou de aplicação de questionário semiestruturado para obtenção de informações como a origem e formas de utilização da madeira e sistematização dos dados. Os dados obtidos mostraram que os entrevistados retiram a madeira da Caatinga de forma predatória mesmo reconhecendo os riscos da extração, sendo esta usada para diversos fins, como a fabricação de móveis, portas, esculturas, instrumentos, cercas, além de ser utilizada como combustível para atividades cotidianas e para alimentar padarias e pizzarias. As espécies mais citadas foram: Mimosa tenuiflora (jurema-preta), Croton sonderianus (marmeleiro), Mimosa caesalpiniifolia (sabiá), Amburana cearensis (cumaru), Combretum leprosum (mufumbo), Myracrodruon urundeuva (aroeira) e Handroanthus impetiginosus (pau-d’arco). Os resultados obtidos apontam para a necessidade da implantação de ações voltadas para a fiscalização e controle da exploração da vegetação da Caatinga como também de orientações de manejos adequados desse importante recurso natural.Palavras chave: Etnobotânica, recursos vegetais, produtos madeireiros, Semiárido.

CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico PROEX/UFPA A disseminação da infecção pelo vírus linfotrópico-T humano (HTLV) em famílias da área metropolitana de Belém, Pará, Brasil, e a ausência de estudos na população em geral requisitam investigações que esclareçam melhor a sua prevalência na região. Metodologia: Foi realizada pesquisa de anticorpos antiHTLV-1/HTLV-2 em indivíduos adultos transeuntes de logradouros públicos de Belém, entre novembro de 2014 e novembro de 2015. A infecção foi confirmada por pesquisa de DNA proviral e foi realizada avaliação clínica e investigação intrafamiliar dos infectados. Resultados: Dos 1.059 indivíduos investigados, 21 (2,0%) apresentaram amostras sororeagentes, 15 (1,4%) confirmados para HTLV-1, 5 (0,5%) para HTLV-2 e o DNA proviral foi indetectável em 1 caso. A média de idade dos infectados (57,2) foi maior que a dos não infectados (46,2) (p = 0,0010). A infecção aumentou com a idade e se destacou nos indivíduos com renda familiar menor ou igual a um salário mínimo. A transmissão intrafamiliar parece ter ocorrido em todas as famílias investigadas. Dentre os portadores de HTLV-1, 30% (3/10) já apresentavam algum sintoma relacionado à infecção. Discussão: O aumento da infecção de acordo com a idade pode ocorrer por soroconversão tardia de infecção pré-adquirida ou pelo risco cumulativo de novas infecções, sobretudo em mulheres. Conclusão: A infecção por HTLV demonstrou moderada prevalência na população estudada, com predomínio do HTLV-1. Essa mostrou-se associada à baixa renda e ao aumento da idade das mulheres. Também apresentou disseminação intrafamiliar e negligência no diagnóstico das doenças associadas. The spread of the HTLV infection in families living in the metropolitan area of Belém, Pará, Brazil, and the lack of studies in the general population requires studies to better understand its prevalence in the region. Methods: An anti-HTLV-1/HTLV-2 antibodies test was carried out on random adults in public places in Belém between November 2014 and November 2015. A proviral DNA test detected if the person was infected, and then a clinical evaluation and an intrafamilial investigation were carried out. Results: Of the 1059 individuals being investigated, 21 (2.0%) had seroreagent samples, 15 (1.4%) had HTLV-1, 5 (0.5%) had HTLV-2, and proviral DNA was undetectable in one case. The mean age of the infected people (57.2) was higher than that of those that were uninfected (46.2) (p = 0.0010). The prevalence of infection increased with age, especially in individuals with a family income equal to or less than a minimum wage. Intrafamilial transmission seems to have occurred in all of the families being studied. Among the patients with HTLV-1, 30% (3/10) already had some symptom related to the infection. Discussion: The increase in prevalence rates according to age may be due to late seroconversion of a previously acquired infection, or the cumulative risk of new infections, especially in women. Conclusion: There was a moderate prevalence of the HTLV infection among adult individuals from the metropolitan area of Belém, with a predominance of HTLV-1. Introduction:Disturbances of the cardiac conduction system are frequent in the postoperative period of coronary artery bypass surgery. They are mostly reversible and associated with some injury of the conduction tissue, caused by the ischemic heart disease itself or by perioperative factors.Objective:Primary: investigate the association between perioperative factors and the emergence of atrioventricular block in the postoperative period of coronary artery bypass surgery. Secondary: determine the need for temporary pacing and of a permanent pacemaker in the postoperative period of coronary artery bypass surgery and the impact on hospital stay and hospital mortality.Methods:Analysis of a retrospective cohort of patients submitted to coronary artery bypass surgery from the database of the Postoperative Heart Surgery Unit of the Sao Lucas Hospital of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, using the logistic regression method.Results:In the period from January 1996 to December 2012, 3532 coronary artery bypass surgery were carried out. Two hundred and eighty-eight (8.15% of the total sample) patients had atrioventricular block during the postoperative period of coronary artery bypass surgery, requiring temporary pacing. Eight of those who had atrioventricular block progressed to implantation of a permanent pacemaker (0.23% of the total sample). There are currently few mechanisms that can explain how nucleic acid bases were synthesized, concentrated from dilute solutions, and/or protected against degradation by UV radiation or hydrolysis on the prebiotic Earth. A natural zeolite exhibited the potential to adsorb adenine, cytosine, thymine, and uracil over a range of pH, with greater adsorption of adenine and cytosine at acidic pH. Adsorption of all nucleic acid bases was decreased in artificial seawater compared to water, likely due to cation complexation. Furthermore, adsorption of adenine appeared to protect natural zeolite from thermal degradation. The C=O groups from thymine, cytosine and uracil appeared to assist the dissolution of the mineral while the NH2 group from adenine had no effect. As shown by FT-IR spectroscopy, adenine interacted with a natural zeolite through the NH2 group, and cytosine through the C=O group. A pseudo-second-order model best described the kinetics of adenine adsorption, which occurred faster in artificial seawaters.

Achalasia of the cardia is associated with an increased risk of esophageal carcinoma. The real burden of achalasia at the malignancy genesis is still a controversial issue. Therefore, there are no generally accepted recommendations on follow-up evaluation for achalasia patients. This study aims to estimate the risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma in achalasia patients. We searched for association between carcinoma and esophageal achalasia in databases up to January 2017 to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis. A total of 1,046 studies were identified from search strategy, of which 40 were selected for meta-analysis. A cumulative number of 11,978 esophageal achalasia patients were evaluated. The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma was 312.4 (StDev 429.16) cases per 100,000 patient-years at risk. The incidence of adenocarcinoma was 21.23 (StDev 31.6) cases per 100,000 patient-years at risk. The prevalence for esophageal carcinoma was 28 carcinoma cases in 1,000 esophageal achalasia patients (CI 95% 2, 39). The prevalence for squamous cell carcinoma was 26 cases in 1,000 achalasia patients (CI 95% 18, 39) and for adenocarcinoma was 4 cases in 1,000 achalasia patients (CI 95% 3, 6).The absolute risk increase for squamous cell carcinoma was 308.1 and for adenocarcinoma was 18.03 cases per 100,000 patients per year. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis estimating the burden of achalasia as an esophageal cancer risk factor. The high increased risk rate for cancer in achalasia patients points to a strict endoscopic surveillance for these patients. Also, the increased risk for developing adenocarcinoma in achalasia patients suggests fundoplication after myotomy, to avoid esophageal reflux and Barret esophagus, a known risk factor for adenocarcinoma.

Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) have great therapeutic potential and here, by the first time, we evaluated their immunomodulatory effect on experimental model of autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Specifically, we investigated the effect of SHED administration on clinical signs and cellular patterns in EAE model using Foxp3 GFP + transgenic mice (C57Bl/6-Foxp3GFP). The results showed that SHED infusion ameliorated EAE clinical score with reduced number of infiltrating IFN-γ+CD8+, IL-4+CD8+, IFN-γ+CD4+ and IL-4+CD4+ T cells into the central nervous system (CNS). In addition, we observed that SHED promoted a significant increase in CD4+FOXP3+ T cells population in the spleen of EAE-affected animals. Taken together, our results provide strong evidence that SHED can modulate peripherally the CD4+ T cell responses suggesting that SHED would be explored as part of cellular therapy in autoimmune diseases associated with CNS.

Key Clinical Message The survival of multiple myeloma patients has improved very significantly over the last decade. Still median overall survival is inferior to 5 years. A small proportion of patients survive longer than 10 years. In this paper we discuss four cases illustrating the nonhomogeneous clinical presentation and evolution of this subset of patients. Surprisingly, these long survivors do not always have deep responses and some require frequent treatments, which include autologous stem cell transplantation and novel drugs. The authors discuss several aspects of these clinical histories, including treatment options, raising hypothesis on their relation with long survivorship which may be important to have in consideration when studying this subject.

Objective: To determine the risk factors related to the development of stroke in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods: A historical cohort study. We included 4626 patients aged > 18 years who underwent coronary artery bypass surgery, heart valve replacement surgery alone or heart valve surgery combined with coronary artery bypass grafting between January 1996 and December 2011. The relationship between risk predictors and stroke was assessed by logistic regression model with a significance level of 0.05. Results: The incidence of stroke was 3% in the overall sample. After logistic regression, the following risk predictors for stroke were found: age 50-65 years (OR=2.11 - 95% CI 1.05-4.23 - P=0.036) and age >66 years (OR=3.22 - 95% CI 1.6-6.47 - P=0.001), urgent and emergency surgery (OR=2.03 - 95% CI 1.20-3.45 - P=0.008), aortic valve disease (OR=2.32 - 95% CI 1.18-4.56 - P=0.014), history of atrial fibrillation (OR=1.88 - 95% CI 1.05-3.34 - P=0.032), peripheral artery disease (OR=1.81 - 95% CI 1.13-2.92 - P=0.014), history of cerebrovascular disease (OR=3.42 - 95% CI 2.19-5.35 - P 110 minutes (OR=1.71 - 95% CI 1.16-2.53 - P=0.007). Mortality was 31.9% in the stroke group and 8.5% in the control group (OR=5.06 - 95% CI 3.5-7.33 - P 110 minutes. OBJETIVOS: Determinar os preditores de risco relacionados ao desenvolvimento de acidente vascular cerebral em pacientes que realizaram cirurgia cardíaca. Métodos: Estudo de coorte histórico. Incluímos 4626 pacientes com idade > 18 anos submetidos à cirurgia de revascularização do miocárdio, cirurgia cardíaca valvar isolada ou cirurgia valvar associada com revascularização do miocárdio, de janeiro de 1996 e dezembro de 2011. A relação entre os preditores de risco e o acidente vascular cerebral foi avaliada por modelo de regressão logística com nível de significância de 0,05. Resultados: A incidência de acidente vascular cerebral foi 3% na amostra total. A análise multivariada identificou como preditores de risco para o acidente vascular cerebral: idade 50-65 anos (OR=2,11 - 95% IC 1,05-4,23 - P=0,036) e idade > 66 anos (OR=3,22 - 95% IC 1,6-6,47 - P=0,001), cirurgia de urgência/emergência (OR=2,03 - 95% IC 1,20-3,45 - P=0,008), valvulopatia aórtica (OR=2,32 - 95% IC 1,18-4,56 - P=0,014), fibrilação atrial (OR=1,88 - 95% IC 1,05-3,34 - P=0,032), doença arterial obstrutiva periférica (OR=1,81 - 95% IC 1,13-2,92 - P=0,014), história de doença cerebrovascular (OR=3,42 - 95% IC 2,19-5,35 - P110 minutos (OR=1,71 - 95% IC 1,16-2,53 - P=0,007). A mortalidade foi 31,9% nos pacientes que sofreram AVC e 8,5% nos sem AVC (OR=5,06 - 95% IC 3,5-7,33 - P 110 minutos foram preditores independentes para o desenvolvimento de AVC intra-hospitalar, em pacientes submetidos à cirurgia cardíaca.

Cryopreservation injuries involve nuclear DNA damage. A protocol for cryopreserving and isolating adipocyte nuclei is proposed. Adipose tissue samples were directly analyzed (NoCRYO-0h), or stored at -196°C for 7 days without 10% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (CRYO-WO-DMSO) or with DMSO (CRYO-W-DMSO). To determine the effect of DMSO on cryopreservation treatment, adipose tissue samples were stored at 4°C for 24 h with 10% DMSO (NoCRYO-W-DMSO-24h) and without (NoCRYO-WO-DMSO-24h). Samples were processed in isolation buffer, and nuclear integrity was measured by flow cytometry. The coefficient of variation, forward scatter, side scatter, and number of nuclei analyzed were evaluated. Pea (Pisum sativum) was used to measure the amount of DNA. All groups contained similar amounts of DNA to previously reported values and a satisfactory number of nuclei were analyzed. CRYO-W-DMSO presented a higher coefficient of variation (3.19 ± 0.09) compared to NoCRYO-0h (1.85 ± 0.09) and CRYO-WO-DMSO (2.02 ± 0.02). The coefficient of variation was increased in NoCRYO-W-DMSO-24h (3.80 ± 0.01) compared to NoCRYO-WO-DMSO-24h (2.46 ± 0.03). These results relate DMSO presence to DNA damage independently of the cryopreservation process. CRYO-W-DMSO showed increased side scatter (93.46 ± 5.03) compared to NoCRYO-0h (41.13 ± 3.19) and CRYO-WO-DMSO (48.01 ± 2.28), indicating that cryopreservation with DMSO caused chromatin condensation and/or nuclear fragmentation. CRYO-W-DMSO and CRYO-WO-DMSO presented lower forward scatter (186.33 ± 9.33 and 196.89 ± 26.86, respectively) compared to NoCRYO-0h (322.80 ± 3.36), indicating that cryopreservation reduced nuclei size. Thus, a simple method for cryopreservation and isolation of adipocyte nuclei causing less damage to DNA integrity was proposed.

This study evaluated the potential of Kappaphycus alvarezii as feedstock for ethanol production, i.e. ethanol 3G. First, aquatic biomass was subjected to a diluted acid pretreatment. This acid pretreatment generated two streams--a galactose-containing liquid fraction and a cellulose-containing solid fraction, which were investigated to determine their fermentability with the following strategies: a single-stream process (simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation (SSCF) of both fractions altogether), which achieved 64.3 g L(-1) of ethanol, and a two-stream process (fractions were fermented separately), which resulted in 38 g L(-1) of ethanol from the liquid fraction and 53.0 g L(-1) from the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of the solid fraction. Based on the average fermentable carbohydrate concentration, it was possible to obtain 105 L of ethanol per ton of dry seaweed. These preliminaries results indicate that the use of the macro-algae K. alvarezii has a good potential feedstock for bioethanol production.

O presente artigo analisa, em uma perspectiva multicausal, a atual crise migratória na Europa, considerando o contexto nos países emissores e receptores, os fatores intervenientes e o arranjo normativo na União Europeia, indicando no conflito entre soberania e direito comunitário um traço fundamental da crise.
