This study aimed at outlining the epidemiological profile of the notifications of sexual violence in the capitals of the Northeast of Brazil. It is a descriptive, analytical, and ecological study, made with the information about sexual violence recorded at SINAN (the Information System of Health Problem Notifications). The nine capital cities of the Northeast of the country were selected, and data from them was analyzed from 2012 to 2014. The depending variables were notifications of sexual violence and rape. Independent variables included sex, age group, educational level, and race. For a statistical analysis, the Chi-squared and Fisher's exact tests were used when the expected frequencies were below 5. The statistical treatment of variables was done using the R software. Regarding the results, 6811 sexual violence cases were notified in the capitals. Most of them took place in Recife (31.2%), Teresina (16.5%), and Aracaju (13.3%). In most cases, the victims were females, children or adolescents, and brown. Most victims had less than eight years of study. The city with the most notifications of rape was Recife. The results show the association between socioeconomic factors and sexual violence, outlining a profile of the victims of this type of violence in the capitals of the Brazilian Northeast. A high prevalence of sexual violence was found in the investigated cities. more...

Abstract Background The homicide, besides being a public health problem, also reveals a complex context of social inequality that prevails in capitals and larges cities of Brazil. Objective The objective of this study was to analyze the socio-spatial context of intentional homicide victims in a capital of Brazilian Northeast. Method An ecological and documentary based study with a quantitative approach was carried out in João Pessoa, state of Paraíba, Brazil, in 2015, which considered 369 victims of homicide. Data analysis was carried out in light of descriptive statistics and spatial analysis. Results Victims of malice murder were predominantly male, young adults, non-white, singles, and less than seven years of studies. In addition, there was overlap, to a large extent of the areas where the victims of malice murder resided, with the map of the areas with the worst socioeconomic conditions. Conclusion Homicide has a substantial repercussion on the epidemiological context, in addition to its lethal characteristic. The issues surrounding them, in which important complex social issues appear, are broad and difficult to change in the short term. more...

The aim of the present study is to present an experience report related to changes imposed by COVID19 on the dynamics of a supervised internship in a public institution of the state of Paraíba, Brazil. In the period before the pandemic, the determinations proposed in the Pedagogical Project established in 2016 were still being implemented, which established a new paradigm for defining curricular activities, especially those related to supervised internship. Of the 480 hours allocated to activities carried out in extramural environments, 37.5% should take place within the scope of Primary Health Care (PHC). Thus, for the “Internship in the Family Health Strategy II” curricular component, the resumption of the remote form was established for the 2021.1 semester. The "Ambulatório Virtual Conexão Odonto" was created, which is a virtual space for the sharing of clinical cases, representing fictitious situations, but elaborated from the clinical experience of the faculty and consistent with real situations experienced in the scope of PHC. Twelve clinical situations, which involved different levels of complexity and presented conditions that affected users of different ages and living conditions, were addressed. It was found that the experience, although challenging, was successful, as emergency remote education was able to awaken in each of those involved the need to overcome this new teaching model. The flow of changes promoted the inclusion of digital tools that contributed to the expansion and/or reconstruction of knowledge, all this, without distancing from the practice of encouraging critical thinking and student autonomy O objetivo do presente estudo é apresentar um relato de experiência relacionado às mudanças impostas pela COVID-19 na dinâmica de funcionamento de um estágio supervisionado em uma instituição pública do estado da Paraíba.

BACKGROUND Road traffic accidents are a significant public health problem and a major cause of economic loss globally. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to describe the epidemiological profile of child victims of traffic accidents and the prevalence of craniofacial trauma in a municipality in the northeastern region of Brazil. MATERIAL AND METHODS A documentary study was carried out through the analysis of the medical records of the traffic accident victims hospitalized in emergency wards in the municipality of Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil, from January to December 2016. A total of 1,884 medical records were evaluated, among which 85 (4.5%) referred to children aged 0-12 years. The information related to the sociodemographic profile of the victims, traffic accidents and clinical variables was collected. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, and a 5% level of significance was adopted. RESULTS The victims were predominantly males (64.7%) and 9-12-year-old children (43.5%). Most accidents were recorded in the evening (48.2%) and on the weekend (32.9%). Among the victims, 37.6% were involved in motorcycle accidents. Craniofacial injuries were found in 44.7% of the children. Most victims were not admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) (80.0%). Craniofacial trauma was significantly associated with motorcycle (p = 0.043) and automobile accidents (p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that motorcycles are the vehicles most frequently involved in traffic accidents, which predominantly affect males and children aged 9-12 years, and result in a high prevalence of craniofacial trauma. more...

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) in schoolchildren and its association with dental caries experience. This was a cross-sectional study with a sample of 471 children aged 8 to 10 years. Data were collected via a sociodemographic questionnaire. Intra-oral clinical examination was done to identify and diagnose MIH (EAPD Criteria) as well as dental caries (ICDAS Index). Statistical analyses were performed with Person’s Chi-square, Fisher’s exact, and Mann-Whitney tests, and Poisson regression models were built. Statistical significance was set at an alpha-level of 0.05. The prevalence of MIH in our participants was 9.8%, with lesions being mostly of the mild form (65.2%) and affecting the first permanent molars but not the incisors in 54.2% of the children. Dental caries was observed in 88.1% of subjects. We observed a significant association between dental caries and the following variables: presence of MIH (p < 0.01; PR = 1.13), dental visit (p < 0.02; PR=0.92), and parents or legal guardians’ education level (p < 0.05; PR = 1.07). A MIH diagnosis was also significantly associated with family income (p < 0.05; PR = 4.09). Children with MIH had more caries lesions on molar surfaces (p < 0.01; PR = 4.05). The prevalence of MIH was found to be moderate, based on previous studies, and the presence of enamel defect was associated with dental caries. The teeth most affected by MIH lesions were the first permanent molars. more...

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic (COVID-19) has brought great public health challenges into our lives. To date, there has been no specific therapeutic protocol for this disease, which requires a study with high-quality evidence. Objectives: To analyze clinical trials on COVID-19 in Brazil. Methods: Documentary research was conducted on the clinical trial registration platform. For the search strategy, the “COVID-19” keyword was established in the “condition or disease” section and “Brazil” in the “country” section. No limit on the search period was considered. Data were analyzed and presented using descriptive statistics. Results: Of the 81 registered clinical trials, 48 met the eligibility criteria. The sample size ranged from 10 to 3,000 individuals. Most studies recruited individuals aged 18 - 64 years (48.5%) and > 65 years (48.5%). Regarding the study design, randomized (91.6%), parallel (89.5%), quadruple-blind (39.6%), and therapeutic (97.9%) types were more frequent. Most studies used standard two-arm trial (70.8%), used drugs (79.2%), placebo (58.3%), and were sponsored by pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies and universities with 33.3% and 29.2%, respectively. Conclusions: Clinical trials under development in Brazil on COVID-19 are mostly carried out with adult and elderly participants, and regarding the study design, have a predominance of randomized allocation, parallel model, quadruple-blind masking with a therapeutic purpose. Most studies use antithrombotic agents or combinations of antithrombotic agents. more...

Data regarding gender, age group, day of week and time of occurrence, type of roadtraffic accident, soft tissue injury, multiple lesions, head and face injury, occurrence of fracture and type of bone involved, occurrence of cranial-encephalic trauma and death were collected during the period January-December 2011. Data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square test), with asignificance level set at 5%. Results: Victims were mostly males (74.4%), aged 60-69 years (61.5%). The majority of accidents occurred during weekdays (68.4%), at night (38.5%) and involved pedestrians (45.3%). There was a statistically significant association between gender and road traffic accident (p = 0.004). Soft tissue lesions accounted for 76.9% of victims and 39.3% had multiple lesions. The incidence of head and face injuries was 17.9% for each region. Fractures in the skull affected 6% of victims, while fractures in the maxilla represented 4.3% of cases. The occurrence of death was 9.4%. The bivariate analysis showed a statistically significant association between presence of trauma in the face and the occurrence of cranial-encephalictrauma (p = 0.034). Conclusion: Road traffic accidents affect male pedestrians in the age range of 60-69 years, at night and cause multiple lesions. Victims present injuries in the regions of head and face, with high occurrence of bone fracture. Statistically significant association was observed between presence of trauma inthe face and occurrence of traumatic brain injury. According to the World Health Organization, the prevalence of obesity in the world characterizes one global epidemic. It is a complex nutritional problem with serious social and psychological dimensions which affect individuals in all ages and all socio-economic groups. Besides presenting risk factors for Non-Transmissible Chronic Diseases (NTCD), it can interfere in one’s quality of life, especially at old age. In this context, this bibliographical review was motivated by the need to have more in-depth knowledge about problems related to old population and the occurrence of obesity, based on its crescent prevalence in this age - and the importance of adequate eating habits - as a central factor to their health. This leads to the conclusion that changes in lifestyle, such as the adoption of healthy eating habits, associated with frequent workout, can be beneficial in the quality of life of these people, especially in the prevention and control of obesity. more...

Objective: To verify how health condition of imprisoned women has been approached over the past five years. Material and Methods: This was an integrative review on the health status of women deprived of freedom over the last five years. This study was based on a basic protocol with three steps performed by two researchers and one examiner. Bibliographical searches of full articles were carried out in the databases SciELO, PubMed and LILACS. Results: A total of two articles were found in LILACS, 0 in Scielo, and 38 in PubMed. In the final step, eight articles addressing the health conditions of women in closed prisons were fully analyzed. All articles were indexed in the Medline database. The studies have addressed the health conditions of imprisoned women and characterized their profile. Both health condition and health issues were approached by the authors. Conclusion: Similar results were found in the studies concerning the health condition of imprisoned women. We observed that women deprived of freedom are more affected by health issues than the general female population and have less access to care, which is frequently provided in an improper way. Mental health diseases are evident, and biopsychosocial conditions prior to imprisonment influence the overall health condition of prisoners. DESCRIPTORS Women's Health. Prisons. Prisoners. more...

General Medicine - Abstract
Descritores: Erosão Dentária; Esmalte Dentário; Caseínas; Fluoreto de Sódio. more...

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether there is an association between risk behavior for eating disorders (EDs) and dental erosion and caries. A controlled cross-sectional study was conducted in Brazil, involving 850 randomly selected female adolescents. After evaluating risk behavior for eating disorders through the Bulimic Investigatory Test of Edinburgh, 12 adolescents were identified with severe risk behavior for EDs and matched to 48 adolescents without such risk. Dental examinations, anthropometric measurements, and eating habits and oral hygiene were performed. Adolescents with high severity eating disorder condition were not more likely to show dental caries (p=0.329; OR = 2.2, 95% CI: 0.35–13.72) or dental erosion (p=0.590; OR = 2.33; 95% CI: 0.56–9.70). Adolescents with high body mass index (BMI) were five times more likely to have high severity eating disorder condition (p=0.031; OR = 5.1; 95% CI: 1.61–23.07). Therefore, high severity risk behavior for EDs was not significantly associated with dental caries and dental erosion. However, high BMI was a risk factor for developing eating disorders and should be an alert for individuals with this condition. more...

Background. Victims of motor vehicle accidents may suffer multiple lesions, including maxillofacial injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with head, facial, and maxillofacial injuries in child and adolescent victims of automobile accidents. A cross-sectional study was carried out with analysis of forensic medical reports from the Legal Medical Institute of Campina Grande, Brazil, between January 2008 and December 2011. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was conducted using the chi-square test (α = 0.05). From 1613 medical reports analyzed, the sample is composed 232 (14.4%) reports referring to child and adolescent victims of automobile accidents aged 0–19 years of both sexes. Victims were mostly adolescents aged from 15 to 19 years (64.2%), males (73.7%), and motorcyclists (51.3%). More than half of the victims had single lesions (54.3%) located in the head (20.7%) and face (21.6%). Head injuries occurred more frequently in children aged 0–4 years (53.8%, PR = 5.065, 95% CI = 1.617–5.870) and pedestrians (30.4%, PR = 2.039, 95% CI = 1.024–4.061), while facial and maxillofacial injuries occurred in higher proportion among females (31.1%, PR = 0.489, 95% CI = 0.251–0.954). Our findings suggest that accidents involving motorcyclists are the most prevalent, affecting male adolescents aged from 15 to 19 years, resulting in a high frequency of injuries in the head and face regions. more...

Supernumerary teeth are those present in addition to the normal set of teeth. These teeth are found in both the primary and the permanent dentitions, and are most frequently seen in the maxillary anterior and molar regions. Supernumerary molars are divided into two types, depending on their location: distomolars and paramolars. Distomolars usually occur in the form of a fourth molar distal to the third molar, while paramolars are rudimentary supernumerary teeth that might develop buccally or lingually to the molar series. The management of a supernumerary tooth should be part of a comprehensive treatment plan. This paper reports a rare case of a male patient with bilateral maxillary and mandibular fourth molars, and reviews the literature on supernumerary teeth. more...

General Medicine - Abstract

Background Limitations of antifungal agents used in the treatment of oral candidiasis, as the development of resistant strains, are known by the scientific community. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of thymol against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis and Candida krusei strains and to determine its mode of action and synergistic effect when combined with the synthetic antifungal nystatin. Methods The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using a microdilution technique, and the minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) was determined via subculture sowing. The mode of action of thymol was established by verifying fungal growth in the presence of sorbitol or ergosterol. The fractional inhibitory concentration index (FIC) was determined using the checkerboard method. Results Thymol presented an antifungal effect, with MICs of 39 μg/mL for C. albicans and C. krusei and 78 μg/mL for C. tropicalis. The results of the antifungal test remained unchanged in the presence of sorbitol; however, the MIC value of thymol against C. albicans increased eight times (from 39.0 to 312.5 μg/mL) in presence of exogenous ergosterol. The combination of thymol and nystatin reduced the MIC values of both products by 87.4 %, generating an FIC index of 0.25. Conclusions Thymol was found to have a fungicidal effect on Candida species and a synergistic effect when combined with nystatin. more...

We evaluated in vitro the cariogenic and erosive potential of antitussive liquid oral medications for paediatric use. Fifteen paediatric liquid antitussives were sampled. The endogenous pH was evaluated by potentiometry, titratable acidity was measured according to the method adopted by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, total soluble solids content (TSSC) readings were performed by Brix refractometry using the Abbe refractometer, and the total sugar content was determined according to the Fehling methodology. The experiments were performed in triplicate and the obtained data were entered in the Excel software, analyzed and presented by descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations). Endogenous pH values ranged from 2.49 ± 0.09 (Iodetox®) to 6.75 ± 0.005 (Carbocysteine®) and twelve medications showed pHs below the critical value of 5.5 for enamel demineralization. Iodetox® (0.021 ± 0.01) presented the lowest titratable acidity and Aerofrin® (1.171 ± 0.01) presented the highest titratable acidity. Celergin® presented the highest TSSC (62.26 ± 0.40) and Acetyleysteine® (100 mg granules bags) presented the lowest TSSC (3.25 ± 0.43). Only 5 medications contained sugar, with total sugar content ranging from 35.93% ± 6.65 (Iodetox®) to 59.60% DP ± 6.66 (Celergin®). The paediatric antitussive medications showed low endogenous pH, some of them even below the critical value for enamel dissolution (pH more...

Background. Prisoners, in general, exhibit unsatisfactory oral conditions, especially with regard to the large number of missing teeth and with untreated caries. The aim of this study was to assess tooth loss, use of and need for prosthetic rehabilitation, and use of dental services among inmates. A cross-sectional study involving 65 inmates was developed at the Regional Women’s Prison of Campina Grande, Brazil. Data regarding sociodemographic and sentencing profile, use of dental services, dental morbidity, and self-perceived oral health impacts were investigated. Chi-square, Pearson, and Kruskal-Wallis (P<0.05) statistical tests were used. The mean tooth loss was 11.3 teeth. Significant association between tooth loss and oral health satisfaction (P=0.049), self-perceived need for dental prosthesis (P<0.001), uncomfortable teeth brushing (P=0.005), difficult speaking (P=0.002), and difficulty in performing routine tasks (P=0.025) was observed. It was observed that 29.2% of inmates were using some type of prosthesis, all deemed unsuitable for use, and 78.5% of inmates needed prosthetic rehabilitation. The oral health condition of the population studied was found to be poor, and prisoners showed significant tooth loss and need for dentures, with the aggravation of having tooth extraction as the major reason for seeking dental care. more...
